Say Yes to the Perfect Wedding Dress in Florida: Affordable Options for Every Bride
Florida, the Sunshine State, is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and stunning wedding destinations. It's no wonder that many couples choose to tie the knot in this picturesque state. And one of the most important aspects of any wedding is the bride's dress. Finding the perfect wedding dress can be a daunting task, but in Florida, you can find your dream dress at an affordable price. Let's explore some of the best options for wedding dresses in Florida with the best prices.
1. Bridal Boutiques in Miami
Miami, the cultural hub of Florida, is home to some of the best bridal boutiques in the state. These boutiques offer a wide range of designer wedding dresses at competitive prices. From classic and elegant to modern and trendy, you can find a variety of styles to choose from. Some popular bridal boutiques in Miami are Chic Parisien, J. del Olmo Bridal Gallery, and La Vie en Blanc.
2. Sample Sales in Orlando
Orlando, the theme park capital of the world, is also a great place for finding affordable wedding dresses. Many bridal boutiques in Orlando hold sample sales where you can find designer dresses at discounted prices. These sample sales are a great way to snag a high-end wedding dress without breaking the bank. Some popular bridal boutiques in Orlando that offer sample sales are Kleinfeld Bridal, Calvet Couture Bridal, and Something New Bridal Boutique.
3. Online Retailers
With the rise of online shopping, brides can now find their dream wedding dress at the click of a button. Online retailers like Azazie, BHLDN, and David's Bridal offer a wide range of wedding dresses at affordable prices. These retailers also offer customization options, so you can get a dress that fits you perfectly. Plus, most online retailers have a try-at-home option, where you can order a few dresses to try on in the comfort of your own home.
4. Consignment Shops
Consignment shops are a treasure trove for budget-conscious brides. These shops offer gently used wedding dresses at a fraction of the original price. You can find designer dresses that have only been worn once, and some shops even offer alterations to ensure a perfect fit. Some popular consignment shops in Florida are The White Magnolia Bridal Collection, A Bridal Boutique, and The Dressing Room.
5. Department Stores
If you're on a tight budget, don't overlook department stores when searching for your wedding dress. Stores like Nordstrom, Macy's, and Bloomingdale's have a bridal section where you can find affordable wedding dresses. These dresses may not be designer, but they are still beautiful and can be a great option for brides on a budget. Plus, these stores often have sales and promotions that can help you save even more.
6. Trunk Shows
Trunk shows are events where a designer showcases their latest collection at a bridal boutique. These shows offer brides the opportunity to try on and purchase dresses from the designer's newest collection. Trunk shows often offer discounts and promotions, making it a great way to get a designer dress at a lower price. Many bridal boutiques in Florida host trunk shows throughout the year, so keep an eye out for upcoming events.
7. Rental Services
Renting a wedding dress is a great option for brides who don't want to spend a fortune on a dress they will only wear once. Renting a dress can save you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. Plus, you don't have to worry about storing or preserving the dress after the wedding. Some popular rental services in Florida are Rent the Runway, Vow'd, and Borrowing Magnolia.
In conclusion, finding the perfect wedding dress in Florida doesn't have to break the bank. With the options mentioned above, you can find a beautiful dress at an affordable price. Whether you choose to shop at a boutique, online, or rent a dress, there are plenty of options for every budget. Remember, the most important thing is to find a dress that makes you feel confident and beautiful on your special day. Happy shopping, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

Networks for Movement
Nestled deep within the brain is the basal ganglia, a cluster of neurons that controls various behaviours including how we move our limbs. Damage to these neurons and their networks can lead to conditions that affect our ability to make controlled movements, such as Parkinsonâs disease. To better understand how information travels from the basal ganglia to the various brain regions involved in movement and behaviour, scientists created a precise map in mice of the networks originating from an area of the basal ganglia called the substantia nigra. They tracked electrical signals leaving from substantia nigra neurons as they travelled along pathways called axons (in green) to the rest of the brain by forming connections (in red) with other neurons. The detailed networks this map revealed could be used by other researchers to understand what type of information is carried along each connection and, ultimately, how animals move.

I WOULD LOVE A DAVE FIC !!!
Excellent. Hereâs for you and @dudewhereismy-tardis
I am putting most of it under the cut because it is LONG
Dave (Daredevil copycat from Inimitable Verse) POV. Reminder that Dave is not his real name, but one given to him disdainfully by Wade in this verse.
Title: rises in the east
------------
âDad.â
What?
âDad.â
What time was it?
âYour phoneâs ringing,â Charlie said. âItâs the boss.â
Oh, for fuckâs sake.
âGive it here,â Dave rasped, throwing an arm over his eyes.
âMom said youâre gonna hurt your back sleepinâ on the couch,â Charlie reported as she shoved his phone into his palm.
âMy couch, my rules,â Dave said. He crammed the phone to his ear. âAnsel here,â he said.
Charlie wanted to stay home and if she was a year older, Dave would have let her. But alas. The last time heâd let her stay home, sheâd texted her friend Jesse who had become unspeakably jealous and had appealed to her own parents for such freedoms, and now the whole block thought that Dave recklessly abandoned his daughter when he went to the goddamn grocery store.
All that for a can of Sprite, man.
This neighborhood was off the fuckinâ charts sometimes.
Case in point: Dani standing in front of him in the lobby with her hands on her hips, telling him that he needed to wear a tighter t-shirt or to start flexing because they were losing business.
âDani, Iâm an instructor,â he reminded her. âIâm hired to do classes.â
âItâs two hours,â Dani said. âTake the damn fliers.â
But he didnât want to?
Dani blinked at him slowly from under her headband.
 --
Charlie was having a great time and Dave was glad for that because he was not. He was being stared at by every person in the street as if theyâd never seen a dude with muscles before.
It was the shirt.
He knew it was the shirt.
And possibly his nipples. Smashing the brochures high enough against his chest to cover them wasnât going well and the highlighter teal underarmor Dani had forced upon him left very little to the imagination here.
There wasnât anything else to do but let the poor things live their best lives.
âDad, gimme more,â Charlie said.
She tugged at the brochures covering what was left of his dignity.
Blessed child, who hurt you?
âWhere did the others go?â he asked her.
Charlie pointed across the road to a gaggle of ladies leaning out from their stoop, smiling.
Ah.
Yes.
Them.
âLetâs try for someone who looks more like a bro,â he told his offspring.
Charlie blinked up at him.
âWhy?â she asked.
Oh, baby.
âBecause theyâre an easy mark,â he said. âGo up and say âmy dad can take youâ and send âem my way, okay?â
Charlieâs face went from confused to ready to kill instantly.
This was her game face. This was her âIâm gonna wreck this goaleeâs teethâ face.
Dave shouldnât have been proud of her, really; her teachers said that she was becoming argumentative and obstinate in the classroom. But there was just something there in the fact that his kid sure as shit wasnât no sheep that made his chest feel big, wide, and full of hot air.
âIâm on it,â Charlie said.
He gave her three brochures and let her scramble off to the other side of the sidewalk and then turned to meet the eye of a family with a father with neat hair and the beginnings of triceps peeking out from under his sleeves.
âYou lookinâ for a gym, sir?â he asked.
The guy looked his way and eyed him up.
He took a flier on his way past.
 --
 âExcuse me?â
âOne second, man,â Dave said, doing the rock-shuffle to keep all the fliers on the table from blowing away.
âExcuse me.â
âHey, I said just a sec,â Dave snapped.
He turned back and found himself staring into the dark eyes of a bald man with olive skin and deep wrinkles in his forehead.
And Dave knew him.
Holy shit.
Dave knew him.
Fuck.
God.
Jesus, Lord.
âI am so sorry,â he started.
âDAD.â
ChâCharlie?
He looked down and sure enough, holding Rudolph âDiamondâ De Lucaâs massive bearpaw was his very own daughter. De Luca made her wiry, suntanned limbs seem like unbaked pretzels.
He was so much bigger than heâd seemed on TV all those years ago.
âThis your kid?â De Luca asked.
Jesus.
âShe is. Iâm so sorry,â Dave said, âDid sheâshe didnât bite you or anything, did she?â
âDad,â Charlie whined. âDonât tell âim that.â
âIâll pay for whatever damageââ Dave continued.
De Luca blinked at him impossibly slowly with long dark eye lashes. He turned his face slowly back down towards Charlie.
âYou sure this is your old man?â he asked.
Whâ
Wait.
What the hell did that mean?
âThatâs him,â Charlie moaned. âHeâs just beinâ dumb. Dad. Stop beinâ dumb. This dudeâs the real deal. Heâll fight you in a heartbeat.â
Dave grabbed his child before she could cause any more damage. She made a fuss, but let go of De Lucaâs mitt. Dave shoved her behind him, just in case this situation got any more tense than it needed to be.
De Luca lifted an eyebrow at that and then brought his face back up to Daveâs.
âWhoâs gym?â he asked.
What?
Oh.
âSpitfire,â Dave said. âWeâre, uh, just about there, on theââ
âI know where youâre about,â De Luca said.
Dave didnât know what to say. De Luca held his eye.
Oh, god.
This wasnât going well.
âHow old are you, son?â De Luca asked.
FFFFFFFFFFFffffffffffffuck.
â38,â Dave said.
âAnd your baby girl?â De Luca asked, gesturing with his chin down at Charlie.
âIâm 12,â Charlie told him brightly.
âHm,â De Luca said.
He shifted his weight back and wrapped a few fingers around his chin, surveying Daveâs whole body like he was the statue of David with a knee injury.
Dave became intimately aware of his nipples again.
âNot bad,â De Luca said.
Oh, thank god.
âThank you, sir,â Dave said. âIs there, uh, somethinâ I could help you with?â
âYou got an accent,â De Luca noted.
Uh?
âA good accent,â De Luca said. âWhereabouts did you grow up?â
Oh.
Well.
Dave could actually just point to it from here. The condo was still standing, despite all building codes and actual alien invasions. At this point, the only thing that was gonna take it down were the rampant, rapidly mutating, borderline feral gangs of chickens that roamed its halls.
Not that anyone spoke about them.
No, that was inviting trouble to your doorstep.
âThe chicken coop?â De Luca said.
The one and only.
âBless you, you poor fuck.â
Yeah, that tended to be the usual reaction.
De Luca laughed.
âYouâre a funny guy, uh,â he squinted at Daveâs nametag, âAnsel?â
How could a word sound so wrong in someoneâs mouth?
Where had Daveâs life gone wrong that his own name sounded so foreign and distant to his ears?
âActually,â he said, swallowing, âMy uh, my friends call me âDave.ââ
De Lucaâs head snapped right up and slowly, a grin spread across his face.
âOh, now, thatâs a good name for ya,â he said. âYou look like a Davy.â
Hng.
Diamond De Luca thought he looked like a âDavy.â
Diamond De Luca thought he looked like a âDavy.â
Welp.
Time to get that birth certificate changed.
âListen, Davy,â De Luca said casually, âYour baby girl there was tellinâ me that your boss has you out here like dancinâ monkey; is that true?â
Fffffffffff.
Technically yes?
âItâs even his day off,â Charlie whispered.
Dave wrapped a hand over her face.
âItâs fine,â he said. âIt happens. Folksâve been sick lately. I donât normally do this kinda thing.â
De Lucaâs face said that that was real cute. Real, real cute, honey.
âWell,â he said, âLetâs just say it like this. Where you work donât gotta be where you train.â
Oh.
Was he offering--?
âIf you decide to drop by, tell the guy at the desk Rudy sent you,â De Luca said. âYour kidâs real sweet, Davy. She can come too, lord knows the damn place is a daycare at this point.â
âThank? You?â Dave stuttered.
âDonât mention it,â De Luca said.
He left. Dave watched him waltz down the block and wave at the gals collected on the stoop at the end of it and felt a little lightheaded.
âDad?â
Not right now, champ.
âDad? Is he famous or somethinâ?â
HHHHHHHHHHNG.
 --
Back when Dave had been 14 and scraping the tips of his fingers into callouses on the old guitar heâd found tossed into a dumpster in the Upper West Side, heâd had to compete with the sound of the couple fighting in the apartment next door and with the radio the old man downstairs always had playing on his fire-escape window.
The old man downstairs was a real hard-ass. Always slammed a broom into the ceiling, scaring the shit out of Mom and Dad and sister and auntie. Dave had never seen him not smoking, nor had he ever seen him without suspenders.
The man was a retired plumber, apparently. And while Jim Beam was his main vice, his passion was boxing.
To the tune of chords picked out of an out-of-tune guitar, Dave had listened to tinny commentators oohing and awing over match after match, until finally, when sleep wouldnât come one night, Dave had snuck out of the room heâd shared with Flora. Heâd settled down on the living room couch, next to his old man splayed out in the recliner.
Dad had lifted his eyes slowly his way and told him that he should have been in bed.
Dave had told him that he couldnât sleep because the couple next door was makinâ up from their daily afternoon argument and Dad had just sighed.
Heâd let Dave stay up with him and the TV in the living room had fuzzed and rattled away, making sounds really familiar to Dave at that point.
Boxing was a sport that he had, up until that night, left to his father. But for the lack of anything else to talk about that wouldnât make his dad look at him with disappointment in his eyes for all that damn music-playinâ and eyeliner, heâd asked who the guy on the screen was.
And that was how heâd learned about Diamond De Luca.
About Kenny Varga. Bert âThe Albatrossâ Kleinfeld.
But there was one guy who Dad had mentioned was his favorite rookie and, now it felt both kind of silly and surreal that the name had been spoken so casually in Daveâs home growing up.
Dad had been puttinâ money on Battlinâ Jack Murdock back when Dave had been a little kid.
He told Dave, disappointedly, after a few weeks of Dave getting up at 12:30 to come out and watch boxing with him that heâd really thought that Murdock was gonna be the next big thing.
Guy was a wolf in sheepâs clothing, Dad had said, shaking his head. But wolves that got too wily got put down and Battlinâ Jack had been found in an alley, bled out in the arms of his reason for fighting.
Dad said it was a fuckinâ shame that Murdock had gone out with a slug in his head.
A fuckinâ shame, he said.
Dave didnât remember him every saying that Murdockâs reason for fighting was a blind ten-year-old, but the thought was now merged with that memory.
That, in itself, was merged with the memory of Daveâs phone ringing one night was Addieâs name on the Caller ID. Her voice was shaking when she told Dave that the Devil of Hellâs Kitchen had just called her from an unknown number.
He had their baby.
Heâd snatched her and Jesse out of the arms of two men looking for girls to be used in businesses Dave didnât want to think about.
Heâd saved them.
The devil had heard their screams when no one else had and heâd come flying out of the dark.
Heâd held the girls in the light of a bodega and heâd coached Charlie through typing Addieâs number into his phone and then heâd taken it from there.
Addie was too scared to go meet the devil on her own. Mason hadnât been around yet and so Dave had thrown on his shoes and had meet her on 46th.
The devil was on 48th, swinging his boots with both girls in his lap.
They were all singing. The devil had pretended like he didnât know the words to Britney Spearsâs âToxic.â
Matt Murdock was under that mask.
Knowing that this whole time, heâd been the one dragging a stick against the fences and bricks of Hellâs Kitchen was almost impossible to digest.
And Dave had worked with him now.
Heâd seen that smirk and that notorious jaw unwrapped from its red armor and that didnât make reconciling the murdered boxerâs son with the man whoâd saved his daughter any easier.
Charlie hadnât remembered him.
She thought that Matt Murdock was a weird fuckinâ dude, and granted, he was a weird fuckinâ dude, but Dave had to say: he was grateful.
Matt Murdock not only brought home his baby, but heâd given Dave purpose in a life that had become consumed by the daily grind.
Matt Murdock had smiled in his direction, never quite into his eyes, and heâd passed along the baton with next to no fight.
Dave wasnât him.
Dave would never be him.
Matt Murdock wasnât just some poor murdered boxerâs blind son. He was the product of some serious poverty. Some serious violence. A whole fuckinâ cult induction, if he was to be believed. And Dave wasnât so sure if he was always to be believed.
But he still appreciated Matt Murdock for what heâd done and what heâd made for this part of the city.
Heâd made Daredevil.
And he shared that with Dave.
Daveâs own dadâs approval hadnât felt like the honor that had come with Matt Murdockâs covered eyes and curled lip slowly relaxing as heâd lifted his face up from Daveâs knees.
He hadnât been inspecting.
Heâd been listening. Dipping his fingers into the blood in Daveâs heart and deciding if he was worth his salt.
Matt Murdock, son of Battlinâ Jack Murdock, was a product of Fogwellâs Gym in the Kitchen.
Diamond De Luca, retired heavyweight, was a product of Fogwellâs Gym.
The stars had aligned. And Dave had stood in their path.
And he wasnât wasting the chance that they offered him.
--
Charlie was stoked to be allowed to come to the gym with him. She usually went to Jesseâs house, where Rubes would look after both girls for a few hours.
But De Luca had said that it was okay for her to come along, and so he figured, why not?
Fogwellâs was an institution in the Kitchen. All kids deserved to know their own history.
âIâm gonna fight Fogwell himself,â Charlie announced halfway down the block.
âYou will not,â Dave told her. âBecause Iâm not tryinâ to get thrown out before we even get started here, alright?â
Charlie whined.
He ignored it.
 --
This wasnât the first time heâd been to the gym. Matt Murdock slipped in and out of it when he was in the city and heâd taken the whole team there once or twice. But it was different to be there in the presence of the daytime crew.
Dave felt very small in their presence.
The whole place was full of people pounding bags and swearing and shouting at kids who were tumbling all over the rows of benches set off to the side of the bags.
It was not what Dave had been expecting.
He told the guy at the front that âRudyâ had recommended that he stop by and got a nod and a wave.
âHeâs probably upstairs,â the receptionist said. âGo pick a bag, Iâll give him a buzz.â
 --
Charlie refused to join the kids on the benches because apparently that was âonly for babies, Dad.â She wanted to hold the bag.
She was not, in one thousand years, holding the bag.
Dave wrapped her hands and let her go at it first to âsoften it upâ for him.
De Luca caught him adjusting the demon-childâs thumbs before they ended up at the hospital again and laughed.
âDavy-boy, you made it,â he said.
Dave snapped up straight to attention.
âI did,â he said.
De Luca laughed again.
âRelax, kid,â he said. âDamn, youâre tight wound. Donât worry, we wonât tell no one youâre sleepinâ with the enemy.â
Ahahahaha.
Please donât.
These people were jacked. Dave was but a kickboxing instructor.
âHere, bub, lemme see what your pops has got,â De Luca said, shooing Charlie out of the way.
And this was the moment of truth.
 --
De Luca seemed surprised when Dave finally laid off the bag. And Dave couldnât read his expression for a million bucks.
âUh?â he tried. âNot good?â
De Luca blinked himself back to earth.
âOh, no,â he said. âItâs just uh, you fight a little like someone I know.â
Please donât say a mobster.
Please donât say a mobster.
âKid used to live around here; nameâs Matt Murdock,â De Luca said. âYou know him?â
Didâ
Did he know him?
QUICK. Answer the question.
Youâre takinâ too long.
Heâs gonnaâ
âSâalright if you donât,â De Luca said. âI was just sayinâ. Kid was like one of my own.â
Heâ
What?
âYeah, boy fought like the devil like his daddy before âim,â De Luca said. âHeâs the only one Fogwell lets call him âGrandpa.â Heâs about your age, actually. God, Iâm old.â
AHAHAHAHAHA.
Please change the subject.
âYouâre not that old,â Dave said. âI think I might have heard the name.â
Charlie looked up at him, baffled at the hedging.
He pleaded with her with his eyes not to say a damn word.
âYeah, heâs somethinâ, left here for San Francisco. Didnât even say good-bye, the little shit,â De Luca sniffed. âCame back last year all âIâm gettinâ marriedâ and I swear to god, heâs picked up some kid. Just between you and me, pal, the old guard here have been talkinâ, and we think that someone missed out on the sex ed talk, if you know what Iâm sayinâ.â
Oh.
Poor Sam.
He wasnât even there to scream from the mountaintops that Red was a last resort for him at best.
âIâm just sayinâ,â De Luca said with a shrug that spoke far more of supreme irritation than nonchalance, âHe coulda just told us. Iâm just sayinâ.â
Any more âjust sayinâsâ and Diamond De Luca was gonna go find a wall to bury them in.
âDid you, uh, have any feedback?â Dave blurted out as the guy started mumbling.
âHm?â
âFeedback,â Dave repeated, waving a gloved hand at the bag.
âOh. Yeah, loads, kid. You got all the muscles and not a damn lick of memory, here, lemme show you.â
Crisis averted.
Thank god.

âOh darling the cut of that dress just looks divine on your figure.â
Jaskier watched as the bride scrutinized herself in the mirror. âI don't know about the lace,â she frowned, turning from side to side. She turned over her shoulder to look at her entourage. âWhat do you guys think?â
âI think it makes you look frumpy,â the maid of honor (Kelsi? Kristy? They all blended together after a while) pouted. âItâs not very wow.âÂ
âYeah I definitely donât think that it has that wow factor that you were looking for,â one of the bridesmaids chimed in.Â
Jaskier fought the urge to roll his eyes. Lace was in no way frumpy. Gorgeous, classy, understated? Yes. Frumpy? No. But that was something that the high class clients of Kleinfeldâs couldnât seem to wrap their head around. After five years of consulting he still couldnât wrap his head around the fact that all they seemed to associate lace with was their grandmotherâs wardrobe. Their grandma wished she had a dress like that.

Movie Review | Carlito's Way (De Palma, 1993)

This review contains spoilers for this film and Scarface.
If Martin Scorsese's The Irishman offers a corrective of sorts to audience misreadings of Goodfellas and Casino, Brian De Palma's Carlito's Way serves a similar function in relation to Scarface. The earlier film, with its decadent surfaces and fever pitch, was embraced or derided (depending on who you talk to) for endorsing the very excesses it was meant to indict. I happen to love that movie and think that it would be pretty useless satirically if it didn't go all the way in that respect. But here comes De Palma, reuniting with an older, wiser Al Pacino, clearing the air and assuring us that no, crime actually does not pay (a lesson which should have been clear to anyone who paid attention to the other movie's ending.) Pacino plays Carlito Brigante, a former drug dealer with a formidable reputation who vows to go straight after being released from prison five years into a thirty-year sentence. You see, he's got a plan to go to the Bahamas and manage a car rental business for a friend he met in prison. Problem is, nobody around him can believe it.
Had Scarface ended a little differently, you could argue this would have been Tony Montana a few years down the line. Tony burned too brightly and flamed out before he became capable of reflecting on his ways. Carlito is haunted by the spectre of past violence, suggesting that he was at one time was capable of similar savagery, and the movie offers John Leguizamo's upstart gangster ("Benny Blanco from the Bronx") as an avatar of his worst qualities. Yet when Tony managed to look himself in the mirror, he found that he was a lowlife to the core with nary any principles to speak of. Carlito in contrast seems a bit more grounded and human, which makes his inevitable downfall all the more tragic. Here's a man who can see all the mistakes he's making, and makes them anyway. Carlito's Way is a portrait of men trapped by a culture of machismo, forced into bad decisions and cycles of violence because they can't comprehend any other way. (A scene where Carlito spares Benny after being disrespected in his club leaves his henchmen baffled.)
Carlito stands by his lawyer friend David Kleinfeld, played by Sean Penn, even when Kleinfeld's visibly coke-addled decision making and penchant for treachery actively undoes him, and the movie highlights how a seemingly noble trait can become downright stupid under these circumstances. I've found Penn's reliance on tics distracting elsewhere, but saddled with makeup this unflattering, he's forced to actually get into character and provides the movie with one of its most memorable lowlifes. (Interestingly, at one point Marlon Brando was considered for the Penn role, which would have been, uh, interesting, considering Brando's career and stature at this time. Viewers of a certain generation will also recognize the character as the inspiration for the hero's sleazy, incompetent lawyer in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.) The other central relationship is between Carlito and Gail, his dancer girlfriend played by Penelope Ann Miller. Like the Michelle Pfeiffer character in Scarface, she's white, conspicuously WASP-coded, and the movie is astute about how she represents a certain respectability to the ethnic hero. It's also aware of how loyalties and conflicts will form almost arbitrarily along racial lines, and the exceptions of Carlito's relationships with Kleinfeld and Gail and his past dealings with Italian gangsters stand out as a result.
The production design here isn't much less meticulous than in Scarface, but the flashy period fashions and glamorous coke-fueled parties aren't quite as intoxicating here, as Carlito no longer feels their allure. (He's also seen frequently in dark colours, looking austere, almost monk-like, in contrast to the colourful suits worn by his cohorts.) Perhaps due to the period setting, the appeal of these things lacks the present tense urgency of the symbols of wealth in Scarface, and with Carlito's relative wisdom they rarely feel divorced from the realities of the street, whereas the earlier film got more and more insular as its protagonist ascended the criminal ladder. Where De Palma does dial up the flash is with the set pieces, with his fluid camera moves, dancerly sense of movement, acute spatial awareness and hair-trigger timing evident in a pool hall ambush, an ill-advised prison escape scheme and the climactic pursuit through a train station. The sequence is less bloody but just as suspenseful as I'd remembered from my initial viewing years ago (funny how your memory fills in the gaps). Compared to Scarface's gun battle climax, this scene feels like the other half of De Palma's take on a John Woo shootout. Scarface brings the body count and firepower, Carlito's Way has the balletic motion. (John Woo's classics, released between the two films, are similarly concerned with the gangster lifestyle but exist in different, if no less compelling, emotional landscapes.)
Now, with all the Scarface talk, it's worth pondering which is the better film, and I think it really comes down to personal preference. This is a slower, more contemplative film, closer to superficial notions of quality and respectability. Yet, perhaps by design, it can't match the brute force impact and lightning-in-a-bottle quality of the other film. But really, these are movies in completely different registers and it's nice that they're as good as they are in their own way.

1. IntitulĂ© Carlitoâs Way en version originale, LâImpasse aurait dĂ» en rĂ©alitĂ© sâappeler After Hours.

25. John Leguizamo a refusĂ© Ă quatre reprises dâinterprĂ©ter Benny Blanco.
