dev camp 2024!
it's the most wonderful time of the year! they ran the same practice twice with two different groups this morning, which was nice because i only had to figure the drills out once. first group featured david goyette, tyson jugnauth, ty nelson, and eduard sale; second group featured berkly catton, jagger firkus, carson rehkopf, and lukas dragicevic. observations:
each group had three goalies but visa vedenpaa was in both, maybe because he is the best. his pads say CLIQUE really big which made me think of that photo from last year with all our blonde goalies.
ty nelson is clearly a leader in this group, he's talking to everyone and the coaches relied on him to go first in drills.
one advantage of the double practice is i got to focus on the defense group first when ty nelson was on the ice, and then the forwards in the second practice when berkly catton was there. they mysteriously put one forward with each defense group even though it was clearly a defense-specific drill (catch a puck up the wall, take two shots from the blueline, then switch and defend in front of the net). wonder if that means jakub fibigr and caden price are swiss army knives, or did they just draw the short straws this morning?
tyson jugnauth looked better than last year but i still don't think he has an nhl future. other standouts in the first group included goyette and lleyton roed.
we invited an enormous swedish d-man named VIKING GUSTAFFSON who plays at northern michigan. i love him already and i hope we get to keep him.
carson rehkopf hit the ice with the biggest smile on his face and it made me love him. he and jagger firkus looked good together.
jagger firkus filling the net up like it's a bucket. so many good shots.
new boy berkly catton was clearly very nervous to start. he messed up the first drill and lost a few pucks before he settled in. his skating is absolutely gorgeous to watch, great edges and cutbacks. he also had a couple very slick takeaways.
the forward-specific drill started with two players in the slot who had to race for a puck at the boards and try to pass it to a teammate down the wall, and it was such a great way to see who's got jump and who can win a board battle and who can make a pass under pressure. especially notable was berkly catton (5'11, 167, skill guy) decisively winning the board battle over our guy from everett julius miettinen (6'3, 201, netfront presence).
dragicevic seems kind of wild, in a fun way. there were a couple of times when he was more physical than the drills maybe called for. he's super fun to watch, and he also had the prettiest goal in the shootout.
after the second session, berkly catton and jagger firkus stayed out setting up tip shots for each other. i am theorizing that there's a little whl clique going on and jagger is the queen bee.
i am sad that we invited berkly's friend clarke caswell to camp but he did not skate!

The talking heads keep saying he's never going to make it in the NHL because he's little. Teeny tiny. Pocket size. And okay, at the beginning of last season, when he got in a preseason game, I did see a full-grown adult literally push him out of the board battle as if he weighed nothing more than a feather. But he's incredibly, incredibly skilled and he's got time to develop! He should be in Coachella Valley next year, where we'll have a lot more ability to see how he's doing against professionals who are way bigger than the 20-year-olds in the WHL.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried about how he'll do; the AHL is scrappy as hell and I do not want our precious Circus getting mauled. OTOH, the WHL is no small potatoes on scrappiness itself, and he's done okay so far. When he gets to Coachella Valley he'll have a team of big fighty guys around him who will not let anyone take a run at him (hoo boy the Firebirds do not let people just fuck around; they will ensure they Find Out), and he'll also be on a team with, I expect, Ty Nelson and David Goyette and Ryan Winterton and Jacob Melanson (Shane and Ryker, I hope, will be up with the Kraken full-time next year), so we'll really be seeing our draftees starting to shape the Firebirds' lineup and create the future! I can't wait.
Small lore from last year: Jagger comes from the same small town of Irma, Alberta, as our beloved Kraken legend Carson Soucy! Soucy has been best friends with Jagger's older brother forever, so they've known each other basically all Jagger's life. Soucy was the first person to reach out and congratulate Jagger on being drafted by the Kraken, and helped him feel welcome when Jagger was here for preseason. Alas, Soucy is now in Vancouver, and has spent much too long on IR this year (what are they DOING to you, bb?).
Oh my god who is this small ginger I love him firkus circus

BOOM! Studios Announces “All-New Firefly” Comic Book Series
Tumblr media
BOOM! Studios has announced a new ongoing Firefly comic book series. All-New Firefly hails from writer David M. Booher, artist Jordi Pérez, colorist Francesco Segala with color assistance by Gloria Martinelli, and letterer Jim Campbell.
All-New Firefly will feature a new Captain - Captain Kaylee Frye. “Captain Kaylee leads the crew on a heist that proves too much for their moral code, but when mercenaries steal the relics anyway, it turns into a recovery mission. Meanwhile, unexpected revelations about Jayne’s family and past further complicate things. But how will Jayne’s past collide with the crew’s desperate present, especially when it leads them to steal from… not the thieves den they had in mind…” (BOOM! Studios)
All-New Firefly #1, featuring a main cover by Mona Finden, a variant cover designed by Madison Goyette with art by Ethan Young, a variant cover with art by DANI and colors by Brad Simpson, a variant cover by Dan Mora, and a variant cover by Junggeun Yoon,  goes on sale on February 23, 2022.

Now that I've been able to fully assess all of Seattle's draft picks (I was working during the draft and spent most of my day yesterday on an ambulance working), I'm excited to see what the future holds for them. (And I'm digging all the "wright" puns. LOL). How do you think Seattle did at the draft?
i am mad at them for not drafting me an ntdp boy, and particularly for not using a single one of those goddamned second round picks on lane hutson, but i'm getting over it and embracing these dudes. jagger firkus looks like the winner of an ugliest dog competition and i love him to pieces already. (after the ntdp, my second favorite source of dumb boys is the whl.)
i can deal with the OHL. i'm sure it's going to be a good thing that we got shane wright, and all the commentary indicates that we got a steal with david goyette, and ty nelson won my heart with his silly hat. fortunately they also filled out the class with some bchl and ncaa boys, so all in all i can live with it, especially when sportswriters keep deeming the kraken a big winner of this draft.

Cottage on the Point in Lanaudière
25 Nov 2020
Cottage on the Point
Design: Paul Bernier Architecte
Location: Lanaudière, Montréal, Québec, Canada
The clients owned this log cabin which has been in the family for 40 years. It is anchored on a rocky point which juts out into the lake.
The Cottage on the Point project to be carried out was to completely renovate this cottage and expand it to make it an open, fluid, and bright space that takes advantage of the beautiful views overlooking the lake.
The proximity to the shore led the architects to plan the extension on top rather than on the sides. Only the screened porch was added at ground level so there was a challenge there. How to add a floor to this typical small log cabin with its sloping roof without denaturing it and losing its trace? The solution was not to pretend that this addition had always been there. The project had to allow the old and the new to be clearly visible.
Contrast and continuity This theme is important in the design of this house. It is the meeting of 2 eras: the original log cabin and the contemporary addition. The original cabin is rustic, made of stone and log with its sloping roof with wide overhangs. The addition is a clean and monolithic volume but whose material (wood) and color echo those of the original cottage. The various breaks in the roof slope of the addition also reflect those of the old cabin. There is also, even in the original cottage, a certain mix of styles, with modern elements, such as the slanted windows, characteristic of the period of the 1950s to 1970s.
Inside, this coexistence of styles and periods is also present. The beautiful old massive stone fireplace has been restored and is now visible on all sides, right in the center of the space. The new staircase is light and minimalistic.
It was also important to preserve the cathedral ceiling of the old cottage, even if a floor was to be added above. To do this, the old roof, which was frail, was completely removed and replaced by a Douglas fir structure replicating the slope and supporting the new floor. Outside, the old roof profile of the original cabin is still visible.
Light and views Adding a story had a significant benefit that the clients and the architect could see during the design process by climbing onto the roof of the old cottage. This promontory offered an exceptional view of the lake and an opening to the sky that did not exist on the ground floor. This observation post has been given to the master bedroom. From their bed, the owners have a breathtaking view of the point with these beautiful tall pines, as well as the lake and the starry night sky.
The addition on the roof also serves to illuminate the ground floor. Through a large vertical opening on the east side, upstairs, the morning light enters inside and filters down to the lower level through the walkway floor made of translucent glass. Thus, the heart of the cottage on the ground floor, which would normally be darker, is illuminated with natural light. A large window at the top of the stairs also acts as a skylight and offers a view of the sky as you go upstairs.
The new screened porch installed on the south side, and fitted with 2 skylights discreetly inserted into the structure, offers another place to enjoy the outdoors in a space bathed in the natural light that reflects on the water.
Materiality The old cabin is made of logs and sits on a stone foundation. This stone base, anchored on the rock cap from which the site is made, helps to integrate the cabin into its natural environment.
Stone and solid wood are also used in the interior, in tone on tone. The other surfaces are mainly white, thus maximizing the light and highlighting the colors of the surrounding nature.
