Spy Kids (2001)
Tumblr media
For children and the adults who accompany them, there’s a lot to like in the Robert Rodriguez passion project Spy Kids. Visually, it’s so creative that in no time, it wins you over. There’s a lot of great humor too. Combined with good performances from both the seasoned and junior actors and a plot that holds its audience in high regard, you’ve got a family adventure destined to endure.
Unbeknownst to 12-year-old Carmen (Alexa Vega) and 9-year-old Juni (Daryl Sabara), their parents used to be rival spies who fell in love. When Gregorio (Antonio Banderas) and Ingrid (Carla Gugino) decide to get back into the field, they're captured by television host Fegan Floop (Alan Cumming) and his bizarre robots. Now it’s up to the “spy kids” to save the day.
The villain makes this picture. Fegan Floop is unlike any bad guy you’ve seen in a spy movie because he’s kind of… nice? Yes, he’s building an army of robotic children to infiltrate every powerful family in the world and any agent he catches on his island – which doubles as the set for his television series – is mutated into a freakish creature he'll feature on his show but he’s not really interested in world domination. He’s doing all of these evil things because he’s being pushed around by his employers and his second-in-command, Minion (Tony Shalhoub). You get the feeling he could be reasoned with. He’s certainly doing the TV show host thing well. It’s weird and loopy but that’s precisely what makes it appealing and the sets/his lair? They’re so cool the film has a post-credit scene that does nothing but walk you through a couple of the corridors so you can take in all of those colours and patterns.
Perhaps I misspoke. There is more to this story than the bad guy. The titular spy kids, for one. They’re terrific. You can tell Juni is fed up with her brother most of the time but that she loves and feels protective towards him. Timid Juni might be a wimp but just give him some time and you know he’ll prove himself. With the wild array of gadgets they’ve received, they certainly feel like the spies we need to fulfill this mission. The actors play off each other flawlessly and carry their own against all of the adults.
From the first scene, the movie tells you it's going to be special by hooking you with a sweet love story between the parents. There’s a lot of love in Spy Kids, both between the characters and between the movie and the people who put it together. The writing is smart and full of great, memorable jokes that’ll have everyone in the audience laughing. Sometimes they come in so quickly that you’ll miss a couple. It means you’ll be able to comfortably revisit the film with your kids as they grow up. If you saw the picture back in 2001, you’ll see that it’s aged well. Some of the special effects might not have (though we’re not talking Adventures of Sharkboy and Lava Girl kinda bad) but the film uses a lot of practical effects and those easily stand the test of time. The action scenes are great; so creative and so well thought-out. So many children’s films settle for dumbing down material adults have seen before. Not Spy Kids.
Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids has a great message about the importance of family, the score by John Debney and Danny Elfman (among others) is memorable. The picture is sweet, fun and entertaining. It offers plenty in the visual department. You'll be excited regardless of how old you may be but for those under 12, in particular, it’s a sure winner. (April 17, 2020)

Maybe Emily doesn't know all of the details??
@boofy777:
I know over the years TD has wondered about EK’s game face, etc, and how she seems awkward in interviews  whenever TD or a return of Beth is mentioned.  Maybe she really doesn’t know???
I am bringing this up because there is a precedent for this in the Fast and Furious Franchise, which is a huge blockbuster with many followers.  In the 4th film, the character of Letty Ortiz, a main character and the romantic partner of Dominic Turetto, also a bad boy sort like Daryl, is killed in a fiery explosion.  We even see a funeral service and a grave for Letty.
Michelle Rodriguez, the actress who plays Letty, found out of Letty’s impending return from the dead WHEN SHE WENT TO THE MOVIES TO WATCH THE 5TH INSTALLMANT AND SAW HER IMAGE IN A CODA SCENE AFTER THE CREDITS ROLLED.  In true soap opera fashion, Letty had been whisked away to work for another international crime syndicate, secretly hospitalized, and also awoke later with amnesia.
Michelle Rodriguez also WAS NOT INFORMED OF ANY STORY LINES ETC UNTIL SHE ARRIVED ON SET FOR FILMING OF THE 6TH FILM.  She had no clue.
I have often wondered if this is the case with EMILY - she knows a return is very possible but no story lines or a time frame has been specifically shared.  It would make sense, because it would be difficult to keep things under wraps for so long. The fewer people that know and the less they do know, the better.
Anyway, thanks for reading and I just wanted to share this since I think after nearly ten years, anything is possible. :)
@twdmusicboxmystery:
I get why you would think that, and it’s a valid possibility.
But for me, I’ve just seen too much evidence that she knows and has known since at least the beginning of S5, as have most of the other major players.
It’s not something we can prove, of course. But we have evidence that Gimple told her before filming for S5 even began, when he talked to her about where they were going with her character.
Tumblr media
We also have evidence, based on what he said in interviews, that Andy (Andrew Lincoln) knew all about it and her return. He was careful not to actually SAY that, of course. But it was implied.
And we’ve proven beyond doubt that what happened at Grady was planned at least one season before in S4, so they didn’t just decide to kill her off at the last second, which is what she and the writers claimed. True, that doesn’t prove that Emily herself knew, but it proves that they are lying about things. So what else are they lying about? And taken together with everything else, it doesn’t seem likely to me that Emily doesn’t know.
Tumblr media
There’s also the fact that Emily hasn’t taken any major roles since leaving the show. The ones she’s done have all been tiny, minor rolls for ABC pilots. I have an entire list of posts about this HERE.
And we know that ABC and AMC are sort of “sister companies.” That’s really not the correct term, but it’s the easiest way to describe it. They share actors and those under contract to one can work for the other. We’ve seen multiple TWD actors go back and forth this way, many of them returning to work in the TWDU after working on ABC shows. (Lauren Cohen, Michael Cudlitz, Sydney Park, etc). Emily has done the first part where she’s done ABC pilots. We just haven’t seen her actual return to the TWDU yet.
Tumblr media
I could go on and on, but I’ll stop there. Like I said, taken as a whole, I just see too much evidence that Emily knows exactly what’s going on. The best we could say is that, especially if the timeline has been pushed back, which I’m sure it has (Covid, if nothing else) then she might not have known the exact dates for WHEN it would happen, but I think she always knew for sure that it eventually would. She was just waiting on a call from Gimple, and working on her music with a few small acting gigs on the side in the meantime.
I really hope when all is said and done, and she’s back, they just come out and explain exactly what happened, what was planned, how it changed, etc., so that we can know for sure. I’m not convinced they’ll do that, but a girl can hope, right?
Thanks so much for your thoughts, Dear! Xoxo!  🍁 🍂 💞

Spy kids 4d movie#
Spy kids 4d series#
Spy kids 4d movie#
The introduction of scent in the movie going experience adds to the outrageous fun by enhancing the action, adventure and comedy to take you where no film has gone before. This innovative and celebrated franchise will now be the first to introduce audiences to the new adventure of 4D where they will have 8 special opportunities throughout the movie to access the action interactively through smell. The film impressed and entertained audiences and went on to gross close to $200 million. After many years away from the cultural mindset Rodriguez brought back a whole new wave and rebirth of 3D into mainstream cinema in 2003 with SPY KIDS 3-D: GAME OVER. New York, NY, J– Dimension Films announced today that SPY KIDS: ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD is taking moviegoers to a whole new dimension in 4D with Aromascope.Ĭutting edge filmmaker and director of the highly popular SPY KIDS franchise, Robert Rodriguez, was one of the first to re-introduce audiences to 3D since its inception in the 1950s. SPY KIDS: ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD GOES 4D WITH AROMASCOPEĭIMENSION FILMS TAKES MOVIEGOERS TO A WHOLE NEW DIMENSION With a little help from a couple of very familiar Spy Kids, Carmen (Alexa Vega) and Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara), and some mind-blowing gadgets, they just may be able to save the world and possibly bring their family together while they’re at it.Ĭheck out the images below and scroll down further to view more information about Aromascope that will be used on Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4d. With Armageddon quickly approaching, Rebecca and Cecil are thrust into action when they learn their boring stepmom was once a top agent and now the world’s most competitive ten year olds are forced to put their bickering aside and rely on their wits. Marissa’s world is turned upside down when the maniacal Timekeeper (Jeremy Piven) threatens to take over the planet and she’s called back into action by the head of OSS, home of the greatest spies and where the now-defunct Spy Kids division was created. Also, her husband, Wilbur (Joel McHale), wouldn’t know a spyif he lived with one which is exactly the case – Marissa’s a retired secret agent. But in reality, trying to mother Rebecca (Rowan Blanchard) and Cecil (Mason Cook), who clearly don’t want her around, is her toughest challenge yet. Synopsis: On the surface, Marissa Cortez Wilson (Jessica Alba) has it all…married to a famous spy hunting television reporter, a new baby and intelligent twin step kids. Spy Kids: All the Time in the World is directed by Robert Rodriguez and stars Jessica Alba, Joel McHale, Jeremy Piven, Ricky Gervais, Alexa Vega, Daryl Sabara, Rowan Blanchard, Mason Cook, Danny Trejo, Antonio Banderas and is set for release in the US and UK 19th August. What the heck is that I hear you cry?! Well, it would appear to be smellovision! I’ll let the official press release do the talking below the images but essentially it’s a new way to watch a movie where the smells from the film come out into the theatre! Nuts eh! Often, they seem to have had in mind other movies, as there are obvious echoes, for instance, of music for the James Bond series, notably in the cue called "Hammer Hands." This is music meant as anonymous accompaniment to the nonstop harmless action on the screen, but it doesn't show much originality or individual character on a soundtrack album.This is something that I’m pretty sure we won’t get to see in the UK but if you’re in the US, you should definitely give it a go!ĭimension Films have just sent over new information along with five new posters from their movie, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4d with ‘Aromascope’. They don't seem to have expended much money or time on the effort, however, sticking to synthesized sounds of a rock band and an orchestra to play serviceable adventure music. As with its predecessor, he also has composed the musical score himself, along with collaborator Carl Thiel. It can be hard to walk away from a commercially successful series, and Rodriguez returns to his franchise eight years later with Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D.
Spy kids 4d series#
Director Robert Rodriguez took an odd detour from his series of over the top action pictures (e.g., El Mariachi, From Dusk Till Dawn) in the early 2000s when he made a trio of special effects-laden children's movies, Spy Kids (2001), Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams (2002), and Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003).

Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003)
Tumblr media
I wasn’t able to track down any concrete proof that Robert Rodriguez reworked some unrelated, crappy script about kids going into a virtual world into an installment of the Spy Kids franchise but it wouldn't surprise me if he did. Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over has no spying in it whatsoever and barely features the characters from the previous films. Instead, it offers special effects so poor they’ll make you think you’re watching an unfinished version of the movie, awful performances, and a story that makes no sense. It’s so shockingly terrible the first time you see it, you won’t know what to say. If you’re brave enough to watch it more than once, you might find it hysterical.
Retired from the OSS and working as a private detective, Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara) is called back into the field when he learns his sister Carmen (Alexa Vega) has gone missing. She entered Game Over, a virtual reality-based video game created by “The Toymaker” (Sylvester Stallone). The highly anticipated game is about to be released and the OSS has just learned that anyone who reaches the unbeatable level 5 will be brainwashed. In the virtual space where anything can happen, Juni summons his grandfather (Ricardo Montalbán) to help, unaware he and the villain have a history.
I should be given an award for concisely and semi-coherently summarizing this plot. Even Spy Kids 3-D doesn’t know what’s going on. Juni's goal is to prevent The Toymaker from brainwashing all children and escaping from his digital prison... at first. Once the film “reveals” that Carmen has been captured while inside the game, everyone forgets the global threat. The mission is now to rescue her and escape the game. Despite this, the theme of family - so prevalent in the other adventures - is completely absent. Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino and Alexa Vega have little more than cameos as Juni navigates a virtual world created by someone who has obviously never held a controller in their entire life.
So little thought has been poured into this film it’s embarrassing. Juni begins the game with nine lives. As he progresses through the levels, he loses them by getting hit by rivals and falling from great heights. In theory, the closer he gets to zero, the more worried about him the audience will get. Except the way he loses lives doesn’t make sense. Sometimes he loses them one at a time, sometimes he loses as many as three from one hit. If it’s that easy to die, how come the beta testers he meets have all of their lives? Because they’re that good? no. Juni runs circles around them with ease. Because they’ve found extra lives at some point? no. One of them tells us they’ve never seen an extra life pack in the game before. What are they doing in this beta anyway? Shouldn’t the testing be done if the game is released in 72 hours? Why even have testers if the true objective is to brainwash kids and the fifth level is unbeatable? That’s the tip of the iceberg. This script feels like it was written on a bunch of dirty napkins while Rodriguez was waiting for executives to walk into the pitch meeting.
There is so much wrong story and script-wise I could go on longer but it's time to address the special effects and the acting. You might argue the horrible CGI is appropriate for a video game but this movie was released in 2003. It looks WORSE than the original Spy Kids and the game within the movie looks so bad no kid could believably be excited to play it. We're talking an ad for a local grocery store with delusions of grandeur bad. It’s The Phantom Menace cranked to a thousand. Not only can you tell the actors aren’t interacting with anything, they also have no idea where they should be looking. While their feet are sliding all over the floors, goop drips off of CGI armor so unconvincingly no kid - no matter how young - would accept it.
The lack of sets, costumes and props do no favors to the young performers. Daryl Sabara was always the weaker actor between the Cortez children and he’s awful here but at least you can give him some slack. He’s still a kid. Sylvester Stallone? The man’s got no excuse. With some funny costumes that include a military uniform, a bald cap and long hippy-like hair (all of which look horrible) he starts off as bad, becomes “so bad he’s good” and then spirals back around to being bad. One can only conclude from this embarrassing display that there is indeed long-lost hardcore pornographic footage of The Party at Kitty and Stud’s and that Robert Rodriguez is using it for blackmail purposes.
It’s so easy to tear Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over apart that you can probably have fun with it with your friends but to get the full effect, you’d also need to know how much of a betrayal to the series this is. I doubt your friends will be on-board for that kind of research and if they are, the laughter will turn to bitter tears. The first film is flawed but full of charm. The second one is ok for kids. This is a travesty. I can’t comment on the 3-D except that it’s kind of fun in a distracting, obvious and gimmicky fashion but I suspect anyone who watches the film with those red and blue glasses will leave with a headache. If you’re that invested in this, might as well stick all the way to the end of the credits for a small bonus too. (2-D version, July 24, 2020)

Social Media Stuff From Norman
Some pics from Norman. Not super reading into all of them. They’re of France and his daughter. (I didn't include the ones of his daughter here.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m not sure who the woman in the last one is, but I’m guessing a director. He just looks so very Daryl in that pic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only one I’m really side eyeing is the Jethro Tull song. It’s all about a train. 🚂👀
This says the cadence is meant to mimic a train.
Tumblr media
Just kind of reminded me of the 1, 2, 3 song they used in S9.
@wdway:
I was just thinking recently how I wish that we could get some shots of Daryl from filming. This was not much but at least it's something. Very dirty Daryl. My first thought was he doesn't have his vest but that might be what he's holding in his hand. I wish it was full length picture because I'm anxious to see his leggings if they're there.
@galadrieljones:
Hey does look so very Daryl here!! I miss him. Also I looked up the lady. She’s Rosemary Rodriguez and she’s directed a ton of TV. She has directed three episodes of TWD, including 8.2 “The Damned.” Otherwise she directed 7.7 “Sing Me a Song” and 9.4 “The Obliged.”
@twdmusicboxmystery:
Good to know! Thanks for looking into her. I miss him too!
