It shouldn’t make me laugh as hard as it does that Albrecht’s first or second line in the comic is freeze.
While in the movie 90% of the time Eric is making fun of him for it. Something happened and I want to know what because he is not catching a break lmao

Albrecht knew them when they were alive
I’ve seen this theory vaguely thrown around before when looking through posts and anything I can find(there’s sadly not much for this movie). The more I think about it the more I think the theory has ground/is true.. the level of connection and recognition between the two goes beyond “I saw your corpse a year ago.” Not to mention Eric seems to have a fragmented memory (post for a later date) but recognizes Albrecht almost instantly. So I’m going to go over the points I believe support that they at least knew each other on a casual basis if not friends. They could have just known him as they’re on his circuit and would talk with him occasionally.
Recognizing him-
Tumblr media
Eric’s memory is a bit fragmented, he remembers who he was, who Shelly was. The bits and pieces of his life he collects around the apartment, city and people he meets/touches. Yet he knows Albrecht without any of this. He knows him by name, and enough to be hurt by not being recognized. This cannot be excused as Him knowing Darryl as the responding officer to their murders. As he specifically later asked him what happened.
Now Eric is one to tease but with Albrecht it was way more casual/playful then the threatening/playful he is with most anyone else. More of a ‘I tell this joke all the time and I’m not going to stop now’ way. This and him genuinely looking hurt lead me to believe they we’re definitely friends. Not the extent to hang out but to know/be happy to talk to when you see them.
Friendly face/beyond the case-
After he figures it all out Albrecht is way more comfortable with Eric before (comfortable being a relative term as this is a dead man standing in front of him.) going enough to call him ‘man’ and speak like you would having a drink with your friend. There is that separation/not knowing much about each other(Darryl not enough to be shocked by death, Eric not knowing about Annie or the divorce) but their is recognition there.
Tumblr media
The level of comfort and trust between the two is beyond someone just on your murder case. Now that I mention it the line “I saw you die.” Sticks out to me particularly. Why he was able to respond so quickly/was meddling. I think he was the major witnesses. Seeing Eric take the “seven story swan dive” spurred him into action enough to be- what his superiors deem as a meddler. ‘Sticking his nose where it didn’t belong’ which in a way isn’t two different from Eric and Shelly themselves. It’s just another layer of hurt/dedication. He knew them and he saw, part of, what happened. He’s personally connected.
