I'm putting together something about a certain character from the show while I work on the rewrite (with my good buddy @full-moon-phoenix who I'm sorry to tag-n-drag into this), and I need your help getting to the bottom of a mystery that might just help us all make sense of why the last season of the show was... you know... like that.

According to this bullet point from SVTFOE's What Could Have Been page on TV Tropes, the Season 3 finale was originally planned by Daron Nefcy and the team to be the series finale before the finale season was even green lit!

However--as you may notice when checking the page yourself--unlike some of the other details on the page, this one had no citation or link to trace back to the original interview for evidence. (Typical TV Tropes.)

I'm going to try and find the interview myself but with all the things I have to juggle, and search engines being as crappy as they are now, there's no guarantee I'll actually find the damn thing.

honestly i guess my sona could just straight up be a lantern mouse.. but i do like slugcats. current idea is that they shapeshift during hibernation according to cycles/food. so if they know they need to stay in an area but theyve eaten all the fruits or if they know a threat is gonna return they turn into a lantern mouse or something like that

it feels kinda wrong to be a lantern mouse walking on two legs and throwing spears lol. i guess thats why i cant envision my sona being one.. theres two workshop cosmetic mods that aren't exactly true to their form but it did confirm this fear to me kind of

Ya boi going back to school and this year is gonna look a little different, which is both good and bad, but I think I’m ready to jump in. I’m ready to leave this year behind me.

Daron Nefcy actually addressed this at a panel at CalArts during Season 3. Marco was intended to be cis male character with feminine interests. While the crew were happy trans people could see themselves in Marco, it was never the intention for the character to be trans. They did however say they’d be careful not to disprove the theory.

The panel above is from the Season 4 episode “Ransomgram”, it is the official submitted panel. The episode was directed by Sabrina Cotugno, who did on occasion interact with the trans Marco theory on Tumblr. It was likely the storyboard artists throwing the trans Marco theory fans a little something.

I will note though, it has since been revealed that Disney did have a company wide ban on LGBT+ rep within Disney TV Animation during the airing of SVTFOE. So who knows what could have happened if they didn’t. Maybe Daron would have decided to go with the fan theory if she knew she could get Disney on board. But the fact remains, based on what has officially been said Marco was not intended to be trans.

Reminders as The Owl House ends

1. Don’t beg Dana Terrace for more episodes and a fourth season. The ending of The Owl House was out of Dana’s control and she should not be blamed for this decision. Unfortunately, many Star vs the Forces of Evil fans still beg for creator, Daron Nefcy, to make a fifth season, which is annoying for the creator, and will give false hope. 

2. Support Dana through her future endeavours. After The Owl House, Dana will likely move onto other projects and shows, similarly to many other creators. 

3. Be thankful for The Owl House. Dana and the crew put their blood, sweat and tears to create this amazing show. The ending may have been rushed or unsatisfying, but three seasons is still a lot compared to other cartoons.

4. The Owl House may return in other mediums. Likely, Disney may publish comics or chapter books to continue the story and lore. For Gravity Falls, Star vs the Forces of Evil, and Amphibia, there are tie-in books to expand the lore and continue the story of these shows.
