Gaja is one of the stars of the world wine scene, a producer that is widely credited with transforming not just the image and international reputation of its native Piedmont region, but of Italy as a whole. It has had a significant impact on the way that Italian wine is grown, made, priced, distributed and marketed. Gaja is one of a handful of fine wine brands that can compete with and charge the same prices as the top names of Burgundy and Bordeaux.

Gaja celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2009 – it was founded with only two hectares (five acres) by Giovanni Gaja, whose ancestors originally came from Spain in the 17th Century – and is now run by Gaia Gaja, the fifth generation of the family to make wine in Barbaresco. Angelo Gaja – of whom more in a moment – is often credited with initiating the winery's modern success, but there were other important predecessors. Angelo points to the crucial influence of his grandmother, Clotilde Rey, after whom the winery's Chardonnay, Gaia & Rey, is named, as "the person who pushed my father and grandfather in the direction of quality.

Angelo traveled widely, particularly to France, in the early years. He also introduced sweeping changes in the vineyard and the cellar, especially after he took over full time in 1970, including higher density planting, green harvesting, lower yields, temperature-controlled vinifications, shorter macerations, new French oak barriques and longer corks. Angelo created the single vineyard Barbarescos (Sorì San Lorenzo in 1967, Sorì Tildìn in 1970 and Costa Russi in 1978). Just as importantly, he appointed the enologist Guido Rivella as his winemaker and collaborator, giving himself more freedom to concentrate on sales, marketing and vineyard acquisitions.Relations between father and son were not always easy. Giovanni opposed Angelo's use of new barriques, as well as the planting of French grapes. The name of Gaja's Cabernet Sauvignon-based red, Darmagi, first released in 1985, means "what a pity" in the Piedmont dialect, said to be Giovanni’s reaction to the arrival of Bordeaux varieties in Barbaresco.The bond between Angelo and his aptly named daughter, Gaia Gaja, is considerably more relaxed. The handover between generations has been smoother this time. As well as striking physical similarities, the two have a work ethic, a sense of humor, a love of fast cars, and a dedication to the family business in common. Angelo's other daughter, Rossana, shares the running of the company.

Nebbiolo is the grape variety behind the top-quality red wines of Piedmont, northwestern Italy, the most notable of which are Barolo and Barbaresco. Nebbiolo wines are distinguished by their strong tannins, high acidity and distinctive scent – often described as "tar and roses". A less obvious characteristic, visible only over time, is their tendency to lose color. Within just a few years of vintage, most Nebbiolo wines begin fading from deep, violet-tinged ruby to a beautiful brick orange.

코알라에게 주려고 산 1986년 빈티지. 안젤로 가야의 와이너리에서 만든 다르마지. 안젤로 가야는 바롤로와 가까운 지역에 위치했음에도 불구하고  귀족이 소유했던 바롤로와 달리 와인 산지로서 각광받지 못했던 바르바레스코를 바롤로와 어깨를 ���란히 하는 지역으로 만든 인물이다.

재미있는 건 이 와인은 카베르네소비뇽 100%. (물론 빈티지에 따라 메를로나 카베르네 프랑 같은 걸 아주 조금 섞는 듯)  바르바레스코면 바롤로와 바찬가지로 네비올로가 기본인데. 이 다르마지라는 단어의 뜻은 영어로 what a shame. 이게 왠 수치냐! 라는 뜻이라는데 젊은 시절 안젤로가 포도 밭에 아빠 몰래 카베르네 소비뇽 나무를 심었다 들켜서 아빠가 다르마지! 라고 했던 데서 유래됐다 한다. (아빠는 이탈리아 고유 품종만 인정하던 분) 근데 이 얘기를 한국인 랜덤 퍼슨이 얘기한 거라 믿을 수 없어서 구글 번역기 돌려 보니 그런 단어가 없는데 뭐 암튼 방언이거나 속어일 수도 있으니 넘어가자.

카베르네 소비뇽 100%이지만 바르바레스코 지역의 테루아가 잘 표현돼 미국이나 프랑스와인 같은 느낌은 전혀 없다고.

같은 와인이라도 빈티지에 따라 힘에 차이가 있고, 그래서 어느 정도 숙성을 버텨낼 수 있을지도 다 다른데 2001년 빈티지는 2003~2015년 사이에 마시라고 돼 있다. 이 와인을 파는 사이트에서는 마실 시기가 1990~1994년이라 써 있었고. 그런데 이건 86년이니 마실 시기가 지났을지도 모르겠지만 그래도 카베르네 소비뇽이니까. 그리고 마실 시기가 지난 와인도 그 나름의 이야기는 있으니까.

인터넷에도 이 와인의 이 빈티지에 대한 내용은 없다. 예전에 마셨던 루이 자도의 마지 샹베르탱 1989년 빈티지도 그랬었는데 공포에 떨며 마셨으나 너무 맛있어서. 여태 먹은 것 중 최고라서 지금은 페이스북 와인 사진 폴더의 표지가 그 와인 사진이다. 

이것도 뭔가 마셔보면 재미가 있겠지. 아직도 $135인데 설마...

ややピークを過ぎたように感じたダルマジ。 「なんてことを！」(How dare you)みたいな意味のピエモンテ語がワイン名。 ピエモンテ語は他にも特に美女を見たとき男性が発する言葉で「マブい」「ハクい」「イケてる」といった意味フェラーリの人気車「カウンタック」(現地発音的にはクンタッシュ)などが有名ですね。
