Album Review: Yasmin Williams - Acadia

Yasmin Williams steps outside of her comfort zone both effectively and awkwardly on Acadia.

Williams’ third long-player finds the guitarist abandoning the mostly solo format of her previously releases and surrounding herself with guests; sometimes there’s one, as when Dom Flemons adds bones on the opening “Cliffwalk,” a highlight and the closest thing to Williams in her element. Other times, Williams plants herself amid a band and ends up with smooth jazz landing somewhere between the South American sizzle of Spryra Gyra and the North American commerciality of Kenny G.

All of which makes Acadia a switchback of aural travel from the bluegrass-leaning instrumental “Hummingbird” wirh Allison de Groot on banjo and Tatiana Hargreaves on fiddle; to new-agey synths of “Virga” with Darlingside on vocals; to “Dawning,” which finds Aoife O’Donovan singing wordlessly over acoustic guitar and percussion.

Acadia is a fine, if challenging, record, but the folks drawn to Williams via Unwind and/or Urban Driftwood wouldn’t have necessarily become fans based on this music. How Williams follows this album - is it a detour or a new direction? - is likely to be the real determinant of her fan base in the longer term.

Grade card: Yasmin Williams - Acadia - C+

The album is nine original, mostly instrumental tracks written and produced by Williams, and features her on various guitars, banjo, calabash drum, tap shoes, and kora. She's joined by an eclectic cast of collaborators—including Immanuel Wilkins, Dom Flemons, Aoife O’Donovan, William Tyler, Darlingside, and others—creating a folk music that reflects the wide range of musical influences that have inspired her throughout her life. Songlines calls her “an original, a genuine trailblazer, one of those rare musicians who challenges your preconceptions about the possible.” Stereogum says: "That her spellbinding fretwork is catching such widespread attention is only a consequence of timeless prowess."

except they're all for my favorite band Darlingside because this is a niche self-indulgent post.

Do I think Trent would listen to a smallish indie folk rock band from New England? I have absolutely no idea. Do I think he would look good in these shirts? Yes. And let's be real, it would make more sense for him to have shirts for a random band than shirts for random Christian schools. so. here we go.

I just think this art is so fucking cool. And it's a unique shade of orange which I think he would vibe with.

SUNFLOWERS. okay they aren't actually sunflowers but they kind of look like them and I mean come on!

I'm not actually sold on either of these designs for him but I wanted everyone to just take a second to contemplate the concept of Trent in a tank top. Also the fishtank joke is something Ted would say.

I don't know why they decided to make a salamander shirt, but it's cute and it's Trent's favorite colors :)

He couldn't have actually worn this in the show because it's a new release but I would have DIED to see him wear it after the Amsterdam episode.

I LOVE this album art and we know Trent appreciates a piratey look so he could realistically pick it up, and can you imagine the fandom meltdown if he'd had a conversation with Ted with a SHIP on his CHEST the whole time?!
