something I'm noticing/appreciating/finding interesting in dark souls lately is how different builds, investing in different magics and stats, can serve to redistribute what (especially second-order) soul costs you pay for

like obviously a martial build is likely to spend more on leveling where a mage is going to buy spells. but then also, comparing my pyro/dex/sorcery character to my str/faith character - the latter spends plenty of souls also on routine gear repairs. the former has essentially negated that cost, because she has the Repair spell! but what she doesn't have access to, that my knight does, is the Homeward miracle - so for farming a resource, she needs to purchase a lot of (single-use) homeward bones instead.

there's also the way someone investing in int has easier access to non-consumable weapon buffs than others - the faith buff spells are single-copy-per-character and gated behind covenants, while the sorcery buffs land pretty much in your lap on each playthrough. so then for damage boosting, a non-int character has more motivation to spend on (single use) elemental resins.

anyway, point being I really like the design aspect of this in how it helps to avoid unbalancing different build choices you can make in the game as a whole

the way they're both protecting finlay's ashes??? even when everything's fucked and ruined???? help??? im crying?? i can't take this man it's too much

ok but i seriously adore how the haligtree faction's solidarity never seems to have been broken; even after everything fell apart, the Miquellan and Malenian knights never turned on each-other so far as we can see

in previous titles, New Londo was drowned to delay the Darkwraiths and the Abyss Watchers turned on one another at the slightest hint of corruption, but at the Haligtree that didn't happen--even as the thing rotted away and their messiah never showed up.

Like, we talk about how neat the Cleanrot Knights are for standing by Malenia even though they'd rot--and they are--, but the whole of Elphael did the same. the Haligtree itself is visibly rotting, with Malenia at the center of it, but everybody there still tries to stop the Tarnished from getting to her. they don't leave, or try to get rid of her while she sleeps; they stand stalwart over their dead dream, even as their bodies and comrades leave them.

that's so cool! and meaningful! they all knew that things were fucked but they still harbored Malenia, even after she returned from campaign comatose and without the army she left with. Whether Miquella was abducted before or during said campaign, either way, the Haligtree folk must have known that, by not turning on Finlay and Malenia, they effectively signed their own death warrant... but there doesn't appear to have been any disagreement. friends don't leave friends out in the cold, even if those friends are contaminated with terminal you're-fucked-and-fungused-disease and made a lot of enemies while they were out

Further Elaboration upon the Four

so recently, someone gave a damn near poetic response to my post asking if I should speak of my boys, and so I shall answer some of the questions about them that weren't super elaborated on in the original two posts.

Lysandre tends to wear the Elite Knight armor, due to his trying to pass himself off as an Astoran knight. He still uses his knife, but also has the Rapier of the Undead Prince Ricard in order to keep appearances. Patches would tell you the man was a schemer- a dishonest and opportunistic creature. Let not his words deceive you, for he still becomes cross with those who would agree. Lysandre cared a great deal for Rhea of Thorolund- to the point of murdering Petrus for what he did- and mourned her loss to the paledrake as though she were his whole world. Given how he learned all the miracles she knew despite having no aptitude for them, perhaps she was.

Mardus wore the armor of the Darkwraiths, as well as the Warlock's helm. Their darker nature appealed to him, made him feel more adept in his practices. Despite his inclination to darker magics, he held Lucatiel and Lenigrast close to his heart, as dear friends. Possibly more, in the Knightess' case, although he doesn't talk about it much. He was a boisterous man, even before his learning of Hexes, and was not very humble, even by the standards of sorcerers. After Lucatiel's death, however, he became much more subdued. It is said that in his travels after abandoning the Throne of Want, he wears the armor of a traveling Mirran knight and carries an odd mask with him. Despite clearly being a Gentleman's dueling mask, he says it belonged to someone named Lucatiel, imploring all who hear such things to remember her name.

Genguchi, being unabashedly blind in his faith in the ways of old. wears the gauntlets of the famed Dragonslayer Ornstein. His chestplate having belonged to the Holy Knight Hodrick, his greaves those of the great Paladin Alva. The only thing not belonging to a great holy warrior is his helmet, that of an unremarkable knight. His shield is not unlike those you would find in the sunless realms, and his sword one that despite appearances, carries a great deal of holy power. He cares greatly for all who he has met, but demonstrates a particular fondness for any who were once prisoners, namely the Witch Karla, the saintess Irina, and the thief Greirat.

Argus, for the most part, retains his loyalties and attitudes from the time before Tarnished were even a concept. His admiration for Radahn is seen in the fact that he wears the Demigod's Armor, or at least a very finely made replica. His respect for Godfrey is seen in the fact that every so often, one can find portraits of the former Elden Lord on the moonlit plateau, painted by a shaky hand and steadily getting closer and closer to the true likeness of the First Tarnished. Once in a while, those who dare to explore the Haligtree find bouquets of flowers in a secluded spot, near a body that seems to have been there for a relatively short amount of time. Letters of apology are always there, too, addressed from someone named "A" to the woman, calling her "The Daughter he Never had". And sometimes, at stormveil castle, cold gusts of wind will work their way to the throne room, reminding the Lady of the Castle of a great Warrior and the conquests in which they shared.

I'll talk more about them later as well, obviously, but this is like a part one of the extended lore

top 5 souls weapons!!

This list is gonna be heavily slanted toward Dex and casters <3 These are my favorites, not a thoughtful list of the best for anything.

Balder Side Sword - simple, classic, can carry you allllll the way. Has a gloriously long lunge to go with its sweeping attacks. Get you a Dex sword that can do it all. I picked up several while trying to get all the Balder armor and enchanted them all for different uses.

Nightrider Flail - Jingle jingle! It's a flail with three heads! You'll put your eye out! This is a completely absurd weapon. Also, it may be the only way my Tarnished has to crack heavy armor. I like it a lot for being a bludgeoning AND bleeding weapon, and for having an extremely satisfying overhead slam.

Black Knight Halberd - Legitimately my favorite moveset in DS1. <3 High requirements, but it's so worth it for the reach and power. Beats the graceful Silver Knight Spear by a hair.

Lizard Staff - IT IS A STAFF WITH A DRIED LIZARD ON IT. The lizard doesn't do anything. It cracks me up. I love it. Alas, I did not manage to get one for my hexer. DS2, you are so silly sometimes.

Darksword - on the list for aesthetics as well as my affection for Darkwraiths. This one isn't a Dex weapon, but shh.

Honorable mention to the Blades of Mercy, for their elegant design alone.

-similar skeletonized holes in darksword and spearsword!

-ribcage armor

-connections to Velka (her son/ murder cult from New Londo)

-rides a black crow-drake with horns/ wear armor likely forged in the abyss like the Ringed Knights

-omg both Faraam and the darkwraiths have much in common with the Ringed Knights!
