Lead changes do not come to Marley naturally, so I’ve been incorporating the figure 8 pattern at the canter into our rides. We’re making slow and steady progress. While practicing this pattern I am teaching Marley to slow down at the center point of the pattern so she can then gather herself up to pick up the next lead. Some sessions go better than others, but overall she’s showing improvement. Another challenge while doing this is getting her to slow down for the center point, she has the tendency to want to speed up her trot, lean into the bit, and run away with us. But that’s when I bring her back down to a collected state before asking to canter again. I do not want her to rush herself into the canter! Rode with my new barrel reins yesterday and they were very nice, but still on the long side. So I shortened them up a lot more after the ride and hope for better results with today’s ride!
