These three books are my top three favourite books with Born of Legend and Styxx holding joint 1st.
All three books have amazing character development and relationship building and I have read them more times then I can remember. I've read them to the point where I've had to buy additional copies because my original copies started to fall apart.
All three of them are technically romances but they are more then that. They are tales of being hurt and misunderstood, and feature outright physical, sexual and mental abuse but all three characters show us that we can't let our pasts define us.
I reread these books at least once a year and use them as examples of how strong someone can be even with a horrible past.

My thoughts on Sabotage (Shadows of Fire 1)
After months since it was released, I finally read it!! (hence my return to this side blog after virtually abandoning it for years 😅) But before I did, I reread all the chronicles of Nick books because it had been soooooooo long since last time I read those that I was sure there were details I'd forgotten. Oh boy! How right I was about that!
Anyway, back to Sabotage. I love it so much. It felt good to be back with the whole gang. I've missed them. The book is a nice set-up for the next chunk of the overall story, but it was too short for my liking! It was over just when it was getting interesting 😞 But after waiting so long for it, I take what I can get!
❗ spoilers ahead ❗
One thing I'm grateful is that we finally had Kody's original name spelled out for us. I know it's silly and Sherri had confirmed it a while ago, but it's the biggest pet peeve I had with CoN. I drove me crazy, absolutely insane, that her name kept changing basically with every new book that was released. I know it's a me thing, and most people couldn't care less about it. I know!! Don't @ me.
My baby Styxx was in it!!!! And for what I can guess he'll continue to be in the series for a bit. i have no words for how happy that makes me!!! But I resent that we didn't see a father-daughter hug!! We had uncle-niece's reunion, but not daddy-kid's?! How's that fair? 😣
And I cannot believe Cyprian's entitlement! OMG! Seriously dude! I mean, I get that as Malachai, he's an angry guy and craves to be loved the way Nick is loved, but like take it with your mother who was the one who sexually assaulted your father in a dream and then she hid you from him. and treated you like garbage. You shouldn't take with the guy that never knew of your existence until like half an hour before you killed him. just saying!
And yes, everyone should be smothered with love as Nick is, but you can't demand it. It sucks when the ones who should love and cherish you don't (i can't even imagine how bad bc I've been lucky enough to have a loving family), but you can't throw a 4-year-old-like tantrum, so massive that transcends time.
"If I don't have it, he can't either... I have to kill him" like what?!! 🤨
My question is, Was Cyprian conceived before or after the curse was broken? Because if was before, it could explain his attitude somewhat, but if it was after, dude! you have no excuse!!!
And now *sighs* I get back to the waiting for the next book.

My review/thoughts on The Last Wish by Andrezj Sapkowski! (I bought this book in October 2019 from a used book store for $5; little did I know it would drastically change my opinion on books/reading forever.)
Star & Spice Rating: ⭐️ 5/5, 🌶️ 1/5
(Don't go into this series expecting really romantic sex scenes, monogamy, or anything like that. 90% of the Witcher sex scenes feel like “old school” fantasy. Think Conan the Barbarian. Geralt takes many lovers throughout these books.)
TWs: (See each chapter below for individual trigger warnings.)
Judging a Book By It’s Cover: I feel like the books with their red spines and video game art covers have become pretty iconic. I’m a big fan of the game character design, so I really like them, but just be warned that the covers really don’t have anything to do with what happens in the book other than “oh look! There’s a Witcher doing Witcher activities!”
✨📖 Review 📖✨
Let me start off by saying: This is the book that started it all for me; the book that made me obsessed with reading. I could NOT stop thinking about this book when I would put it down, and it was the first thing on my mind when I woke up the next morning. I just had to know what Geralt was going to do next. He’s a badass, genetically modified man, made for killing monsters… and he talks to his horse. He says he doesn’t care, but spoiler, he actually does. My most unexpected, and first as an adult, book boyfriend.
The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski is a collection of short stories where the chapters fluctuate between present time to various past events/Witcher contracts that help depict what the life of a Witcher is like and also help introduce some of the characters that are a frequent part of Geralt’s life. (This book series is actually the foundation of what spawned both the video game series and the Netflix show; they’re not an expansion.)
If you’re interested in reading The Witcher, I would highly recommend starting with this one and then reading Sword of Destiny, though it’s not “required” to do so. It’s a great way to get used to the world, which is a dark, medieval fantasy setting that contains witches & wizards, elves, dwarves, monsters/ mythology and more. The short stories of The Last Wish & Sword of Destiny  focus more on monster slaying and breaking curses, while the novels veer more towards politics, war, and scheming. Both have heavy themes tied to morals/social justice and making choices. Geralt is a morally grey character with a dry sense of humor that tries to mind his own business, unless hired to do otherwise, but somehow always finds himself getting involved in things that Witchers aren’t supposed to care about. No matter what choice he makes, there’s always a consequence.
Here’s a brief summary of each of the short stories you’ll find in this particular book:
The Voice of Reason: These are the “present day” chapters, set at a Temple of Melitele while Geralt is healing from an injury. You’ll find The Voice of Reason chapters in between every short story. There’s a lot of philosophizing and remembering to be had in these.  (TWs: One of these chapters features nudity and sex. Though the sex is short and not in great detail. There are some suggestive jokes, some misogyny, some fighting/blood, and one of the priestesses has a seizure.)
The Witcher: The King of Temeria’s daughter was cursed at birth, causing her to be born as a creature known as a striga. The King is offering a reward for anyone who can lift the curse, killing her being the last resort. Geralt takes on the contract, locking himself in and spending the night in the old palace that the striga lives in. (TWs: Incest, dying during child birth, blood/gore.)
Grain of Truth: This story has bits of Beauty and the Beast in it. Geralt encounters two dead bodies while traveling, leading him to investigate the area and finding a manor nearby. While literally stopping to smell the roses, a large beast bursts from the manor in a (failed) attempt to scare Geralt away. The beast is now curious about Geralt; not immediately realizing he’s a Witcher, he invites him to dinner and discussion. (TWs: rape, blood, gore, nudity)
Lesser Evil: Geralt visits a mage known as Stregobor, who is being hunted by a woman named Renfri. Stregobor wants to enlist Geralt as his bodyguard to defend him from her. Geralt refuses, but eventually encounters Renfri and her gang in a tavern. When Geralt comes to realize that Renfri will stop at nothing to kill Stregobor, including killing innocent townspeople, Geralt is forced to pick a side. If you’ve heard the classic Witcher quote “Evil is evil,” this is where it comes from. (TWs: Sexual assault, blood/gore, autopsies. There is also a sex scene in this chapter, however it is “fade to black.”)
A Question of Price: The Queen of Cintra, Calanthe, is holding a banquet to give her daughter Pavetta away on her 15th birthday (as is custom.) Hoping to give her to Skellige to ensure their alliance and expecting a fight, Calanthe has hired Geralt as a bodyguard/mediator. Geralt engages in conversation with the Queen throughout the dinner & explains to her that that’s not what Witcher’s do, when suddenly a helmeted knight appears claiming that Pavetta was promised to him by Calanthe’s late husband 15 years prior, via the “law of surprise” (an ancient custom). A large fight breaks out which results in Geralt invoking his own “law of surprise.” (TWs: vomiting, drinking, violence, underage marriage/sex)
The Edge of the World: Dandelion is traveling with Geralt who is looking for work. All of the potential jobs are deadends, not “real” Witcher jobs, however on their way out of town, they encounter a man who claims a “devil” is causing trouble nearby; the man wants this “devil” to be dealt with, but doesn’t want the Witcher to kill it. Geralt agrees to investigate, leading to himself and Dandelion being attacked by the creature. During a second attempt to persuade the creature to leave, Geralt is knocked down (and out) by an unidentified rider. When he wakes, he finds himself bound and gagged. (TWs: Colonization, racism, violence)
The Last Wish: While fishing, Geralt and Dandelion have an encounter with a djinn that leaves Dandelion gravely injured. Geralt rushes Dandelion on horseback to the nearest city to find his only hope of saving his friend now lies with a mage who has recently taken up residency. This mage turns out to be the witch Yennefer of Vengerberg, who will save Dandelion, but at the cost of Geralt’s ego and at the chance of her capturing the djinn for her own gain. (TWs: magical coercion/manipulation, blood & gore, nudity, sex that isn’t described in great detail.)

What went wrong?
An October 2023 wrap-up I had a fantastic start to October, I’d discovered some great novels to read, my writing was powering along, I was finally catching up on the blog post schedule… and then the ‘cloud storage’ lost some of my documents again, along with my hard drive (and back-ups) crashing. So I lost a lot of material, which would mean I would be re-writing some of my content for the third…

Review: Her Soul To Take by Harley Laroux
4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
DELICIOUS.
Simply put, this is a story about a hot, dominant demon named Leon, who respects free will and consent. One day he takes interest in a human named Rae. Rae is newly back in town, after having lived in California for majority of her life. The why and how, you'll just have to read for yourself. 😅
Its been a while since I dabbled in dark romance. So I craved something like this, and I wasn't disappointed. There are many trigger warnings but to be honest it really was quite 'light' if you're a seasoned dark romance reader. It reminded me a lot of There Are No Saints by Sophie Lark (but replace demon with serial killer). So if you read that one and loved it then you should be okay with the TW in this one.
Overall, I ate this one up. It was dark, it was hot, it was paranormal & culty. What more can I ask for? 🔥☠💀

Return to Sanctuary (Anthology)
Tumblr media
Read time: 2 Days Rating: 5/5
Edited by Carol Shaughnessy Contains contributions by: Sherrilyn Kenyon/ McQueen, Nicki Nance, Lina Acevedo, Sabrina Diaz, Sheri-Lynn Marean, Cole Jackson, Hunter J Skye, Leigh Bulls, Alice Sable, Cynthia Agutun, Trinity Blaslo, Dawn Chartier, Eva Nela, Sarah Compton and C Stripes.
To me this is not as strong as Sanctuary. It at least doesn't feel as well organised, Love's Absolution is a strange way to start, too tightly tied to the previous book. Second Chance for a Forever Mate is a strange way to end at least to me, utilising arcadian wolves it rightfully uses their base forms in the mating process something that I've never been a fan of (not an uncommon opinion). I can see the choice to use Stripes' inclusion last could leave a bad taste in readers mouths. It could however have been a decent first entry with Nance's last.
What is improved in Return to Santuary is the variety of supernaturals used in the stories. I found Santuary focused heavily on Werehunters this one is more diverse most importantly including more Dark Hunters as ocs. There is an origin story for one of the more enigmatic couples in the Hunterverse, some surprising pantheon appearances and a story written in entirely in what I shall refer to as the Simi speak. It is clearly one for the fans for through. There will be a story for everyone and probably a story that will leaving them going "Ahhh... no not for me". To me at least this is what an anthology should be, diverse.
Love's Absolution by Nicki Nance
“I’m not a doctor, but I think it’s your species.” Dev sat down against the wall and put his elbows on his knees in anticipation of a long talk. Shem glared down at him. “What?” Dev pointed at him. “You, my friend, are human. Mistakes come with the territory. Hence the term ‘human error.’” — Dev Peltier and Shem
Love's Absolution is a continuation of Mourning Shadows Nicki Nance's story from Sanctuary. It's a firm addition to that world, though something tells me you may be able to pick it up and read it without knowing Mourning Shadows. It builds on the world that Nance created in that story. It feels like an alternative reality, our timeline but not. What we do find out that I appreciated is the inclusion of Shem's family, particularly his maternal line. Shem comes from a long line of very strong women... the Devereaux women. It is a story of family and forgiveness. There is an on-point Ash conversation that cannot be ignored.
Music and Storm by Lina Acevedo
The sensation of her body next to his when they escaped to dance in the rain, the smell of the rain, their feet buried in mud, the sound of thunder, their laughter and their hearts racing like a song. A kiss that she had wanted and had never happened. — Eliša
This is the story of Egyptian Dark Hunter Eliša and squire Basilius Nizar. And huh... I honestly did not see that ending coming. I'm not going to think too hard about the interplay of pantheons here. If one of the big six can be hiding out in a different pantheon we may as well use it. The ending kinda feels off to me. Are squires tied to a single hunter? If not why isn't Nizar made Eliša's squire? I know Queen of All Shadows plays with a squire Dark Hunter relationship (Brynna and Xander). Either way, it is a choice interpretation. Leaves them happy. Answers the whys of their history. And Eliša is a truly interesting Dark Hunter with her mix of power and perhaps damaged mind.
Follow the Thread by Sabrina Diaz
He was the most beautiful man she had ever seen. His blue eyes were even more intense in the light. His blond hair was cropped short in a way that suited his face. She noticed that he had burn scars on his face and arms. But that only made him more attractive to her. The scars proved he was a survivor. — Nyssa
This is different. It blends multiple well-known Greek myths but centres them around Sanctuary as a base and point of safety. Exactly as it is intended to be, as was I suspected the brief of the entries as well. Nyssa is a strong heroine well matched to the traumatised Ladon. I like the shades, the way Nyssa sees supernatural beings, showing, their most common presentations. It is so good to see Eris or a Devereaux woman in any piece. The Devereaux's are just a matriarchial tour de force and Eris is well Eris.
We All Got Beasts by Sheri-Lynn Marean
“You really think they guard treasure?” “It is, and maybe. At least I hope so,” Genna said. “A girl can’t have enough sparklies.” “Exactly,” —
Okay, let's be honest this is so hard to read. It's reading a whole story of Simi speak essentially, props to the author for that alone. Is just a cute little adventure kinda story. Genna is an acquired taste but her relationship with Thaniel is cute. Trying to make the gnomes come to life just to protect what is most precious is so sweet. like Nicki Nance's story, this is a pair to her piece in Sanctuary, though stands alone with more ease.
Saved by Stone by Cole Jackson
She was young enough to get carded for a drink and old enough to be served it. A girl her age would rarely come out alone at night and those that did would know to keep an eye over their shoulder. He watched her a moment more and realized that she wasn’t from around here. — Garin
There is a fantastic cyclic feeling to the ending. The hero, Garin has such a good voice. He's a gargoyle everything about him screams Victorian, his prestenation but more importantly his manner of speaking. The choice to give him that older voice is one of the best, it's like keeping the manner of speaking for a Dark Hunter after they made their deal with Artemis. I like that someone wrote a story using a protagonist who comes from a place of conflict with the Peltiers and the Sanctuary staff. Not everyone is on their good side, and bears have long memories. Aimee does her brilliant insightful female thing here too when it comes to Garin and Frankie's relationship.
Wendigo Weekend by Hunter J Skye
I hadn’t meant to select such an upscale hotel, but they’d had a cancellation and I was a lunatic with a credit card. — Ari
This is a very different take on self-discovery set before Bad Moon Rising. Wendigo protagonist Ari feels almost voiceless though. It almost seems like Hunter J Skye decided to use the Hunterverse and Return to Sanctuary as a way to introduce readers to a new mythological creature. One with a dark side. Also, it comes from Native American myth, not something we see a lot of in the Hunterverse. This is a story that does brilliant work with Lo. It shows a caring side of her we need to see more.
Bayou Honeymoon by Leigh Bulls
Jamison had come back from New York. She’d said she loved him, and her life wouldn’t be complete without him. He remembered their wedding day. When asked, she’d said, “We do” instead of the normal “I do.” It was her way of telling everyone she carried his child. — Rafe
This one is all mystery all the time. Leigh Bulls tells the story of a late honeymoon for werewolf, Rafe and Jamison his pregnant human wife. It features frequent appearances by Menyara freaking out the tourists, telling them their unborn child so is highly important. But you never get any real answers as to why Jamison's son is so important. You know, I like it as a piece of storytelling it is effective. If there is a third vol it will be curious to know if this one continues on.
Enter the Sanctuary by Alice Sable
“What the hell are you?” Acheron snorted. “I’m your best friend and your worst nightmare all wrapped up in tight leather pants.” “Mmm, sexy,” Tory whispered. Acheron grinned and kissed Tory’s forehead. “Later, baby.” — Logan, Acheron and Tory
I'm not sure that to make of this. Great use of the one demon army that is Simi. Tory being the big boss she is, one theme of the series all the men are cowed by their women. Fang being allergic to subtlety. I like the concept of the elementals but not so much how they were played out. The lore governing the elementals is effective, blood is an earth element. Alice sable does introduce an interesting play on the infamous sign "You entered the Sanctuary in peace, now go in peace.” (Acheron). Side not which book did we meet Psyche and Eros in? I remember it happening but not when.
In Another Place by Cynthia Agutun
There was darkness in him, but also light. He had a heart filled with love, fighting to keep the darkness at bay. My intuition told me that at some point he would meet someone who would tip the balance and add more light to his life. I gave him a smile. “Keep fighting. Never let the darkness overtake your heart. The light will come.” — Cassie
Cynthis Agutun uses a smartly heroine in her story. Commonly, especially in the Chronicles of Nick, we are introduced to characters that are born of dual and conflicting natures. This is exactly what Cassie is, the daughter of a demon and a guardian angel. She runs into the most iconic dual nature character in the entire Hunterverse... Nick Gautier. Agutun is the only person to use the canonical Nick, post the breakdown of the relationship with Ash. Cassie's quote was directed at him. The whole story is just clever
Sanctuary's Sheltered Heart by Trinity Blaslo
She is the tornado that flies by but notices everything not touching a thing Her heart is that of gold, yet no one dares goes digging to find it. Only a true one will be her king. — 🎼 Sanctuary 🎙
Look this is just weird. Not sure if that is good weird or bad weird. It more makes an unexpected twist that doesn't sit well with me. I did like Simi's absolute loyalty though and Sanctuary repaying it. But Lore's "his woman" language got old fast. That sort of pocessive linguistics without her knowledge or mutual agreement puts me on edge. Particularly given the background for this couple.
Awakwnwd by the Dark Hunter by Dawn Chartier
“I’d rather believe you’re a vigilante.” A deep laugh escaped him. Something he hadn’t done in a long time. He wasn’t sure what possessed him, but he reached up and cupped her chin. “I’m no dark hero, Alyssa Brooks.” — Alyssa and Cole
I quite like this. Cole is perfectly charming. Alyssa is sassy and nearly realistic given the pull that does exist. Also, she's a librarian. 😇 Dawn Chartier was aware of the word count limits and it made the right choices with their characters and the plot. It feels like the compressed early parts of a novel. You get just enough of a feel for what is going on, where they come from, what their hang-ups are but it is about them, their now and not their pasts. It's seemingly one of the few in this collection that goes explicit and it does that well.
How a Demon Made a Friend by Eva Nela
"You shouldn't be walking alone if you can't defend yourself properly." He growled aggressively. “But… Well, that also gave me a chance to meet you.” He smirked, flashing his sharp teeth. “I'm Xedrix.” — Xedrix
OMG 🤩 it was only when I looked up Xedricks that I realised what this is. This is the first meeting between Simi's older brother and owner of Club Charonte, Xedrix and his partner, Dimme demon Kerryna. I barely remember these two but I remember meeting them in Bad Moon Rising (how is it that book is a point of confluence for so much?). That said it did leave me so confused. Kerryna comes across as a moralistic demon. But what did surprise me was the main Peltier in play, Kyle. It's so nice to see a different cub. Eva Nela also honours Nicolette in the best possible way.
Plague of Pantheons by Sarah Compton
“Gwendolen is a grown woman. She should have the right to decide for herself what must be done. She doesn’t seem like the type to stand in the background.” — Aimee Peltier
This is a well thought out pairing. Gwain, Knight of the Round Table now a Dark Hunter and immortal Gwendolen. Though immortal Gwendolen is only 23, she is the daughter of Celtic goddess Cerridwen and Roman god Saturn. I call it well thought out because there is serious compatibility there culturally and personality-wise. This one certainly leaves the reader feeling like there is more to come. Gwendolen is not as strong as I would have liked but maybe it is more Saturn is super protective and she is wholly trapped. Not too many people could break that shield.
After I finished reading this I looked up what Cerridwen and Saturn functions were. Saturn was the God of time, wealth, agriculture, and liberation, Cerridwen is slightly more difficult but modern interpretation has her as the goddess of rebirth, transformation, and inspiration. There are other interpretations that have her as the Crone in the female cycle and as Underworld Goddess. They wouldn't necessarily be incompatible. But their daughter could be very interesting when she comes into her powers. Am I overthinking this? Yes but don't mix pantheons and expect me to not think about contexts.
Second Chance for a Forever Mate by C Stripes
“You should come to the bar. Show everyone you’re still alive.” “That’s the crux of the matter, isn’t it?” Beau locked gazes with Serre. “Am I still alive?” — Serre Peltier and Beau
Gosh when was the last time I saw Serre? I adore seeing thing the Peltier cubs. Katagarian wolf Beau's story is built from a sad base, the loss of a mate days after they claimed each other, so before they tied their life forces. The loss of his Cassie has as you would expect destroyed him to a degree and made him very reckless, yet he is still the pack alpha. For me, it is more about him and his growth than his relationship with Madigan St. Jules. he knows something about her is different. Nothing wrong with it and it is so good to have a second chance. I always struggle with Katagaria and the animal base forms. What that means for consummation. Really that is not my thing. Regardless of how much I like a plot.

'Vamily Spotlight': WoD Brand Team is Taking Art Without Permission
Recently, I was informed by a friend that some work of mine had shown up in the World of Darkness’ official ‘Vamily Spotlight’ section of their latest video. In this they talk about the gameplay reveal of Bloodlines 2 and generally drum up hype for it, which is largely what you expect from company channels when they’ve a new product out.
There’s a problem with this: I was never informed, or asked. No consent was given to use that work, or any others.
Through some excellent efforts by friends I also found that my work was in two other videos, with the earliest being well over a year ago-- totalling three, and they were up on both Twitch and YouTube.
Now, you’ll note that I’m a professional artist with two separate art degrees and well over a decade and a half of training. I’ve also a basic understanding of copyright and fair use.
The Vamily Spotlights are little to do with the review and news section of the video and therefore do not really have bearing on the main point of the video. To this end, I’d assume they’re there as a draw to viewers, maybe to see if their or their friends’ work has turned up in these official videos. And nominally that’s a valid tactic for engagement, if you have permission to use these pieces of work.
They do not however have permission, and certainly not from me.
As of writing, (5th of February 2024) I’ve issued a DMCA request for all three of the videos my work shows up in on both Twitch and YouTube, and takedowns are pending but I would urge people in the WoD tag here on Tumblr to check the available videos for themselves, if they are as concerned as I am. The screenshots of art in the videos they use to spotlight seem to come from Tumblr, as well as whole TikTok videos and other social media posts. If this makes the rounds elsewhere, do check your stuff wherever you are, WoD fans.
As the videos are also present on the Twitch VOD platform, this means they are actively charging money using our work without permission. I am unsure if their YouTube channel is monetised.
If they use your work for their spotlights, they are making advertisements and revenue off of your work without any reimbursement or prior consent.
I don’t know if other artists were asked, but I definitely wasn’t, and by now we all know the issues with ‘exposure’ and how that does not keep artists fed or housed.
And Paradox Interactive, having artists, they should know that you do not take for free from any of us-- at any level of influence or professionalism. The WoD community is not a free for all for companies to pick and choose free art to use like a bowl of cute little multicoloured sweets, it’s a bunch of creative, inspired and crafty people who come together across any edition of the many worlds in the setting to create as is our fair right to do so. Without being taken for granted, and without being cynically harvested for ‘content’. How vampiric.
Additionally I would like to note that all of my World of Darkness fanworks are based on legacy books; Vampire 20th Anniversary Edition, Mage the Ascension 20th Anniversary Edition and Hunter: the Reckoning First Edition most often, though there are appearances from others. You’ll note that not one of these books is the territory of Paradox Interactive or their World of Darkness brand management team-- looks to me like they’ve simply trawled the tag without reading what they’re looking at, which means they certainly didn’t take the time to ask permission to use these works. Not only were these actions tantamount to theft, it was also not even their fanart to begin with. And once again, they’d have known this had they contacted me at all, which they did not. It’s a failure on their part on several levels and not only do I want the videos taken down, I think the community is sorely owed an apology for this frivolous theft of art under the banner of ‘community content’. I didn’t opt in to having my work taken, and it should not have been assumed that it was okay to take my work just because it’s using a tag they also use!
I want everyone to know I have had zero benefit from their use of my work-- no money, no notes and no dialogue. This does not help artists. This does not help the community.
I’m willing to talk about this should anyone want to ask, but this is a gross abuse of artists and creatives’ rights for the sole purpose of gain by the World of Darkness brand team, and I expected better. I know I personally deserve an apology for this at the very least, as well as the WoD team to commit to actually contacting artists and sourcing permission in future-- and to set up an opt-in or out system for whether people want to be featured. I know I don’t, and I never asked to be. My work’s lovely, and they’re right to have said so. But it’s not for Paradox, and it’s not for Outstar or any of the other Brand team.
It’s for me, and people here on Tumblr who like it.
I’m disappointed, in PDX and in the WoD Brand team, because they should know far better than this.

Please don't say goodbye...
Tumblr media
Zayne x reader
Warnings: heavy angst, mentions of death, very little comfort, not proof read
Summary: after receiving orders from the Hunters Association that you're being sent on a dangerous mission, one you might not return from, you have to break the news to your childhood friend and doctor, Zayne...
Word count: 2.8k (holy- Idk how that happened)
The beginning of this fic is written by anticyra as the intro for her Zayne chatbot on c.ai, full credits go to her!!!
Tumblr media
"Late for your checkup again, I see," Zayne said in his usual blunt manner, not even bothering to look up from his paperwork when you burst into his office.
If it were anybody else who decided to book an appointment right at the end of his shift, and then turn up half an hour late for it, Zayne wouldn't have bothered staying to wait. But since it was you... well, it wasn't like he had anything better to do that night anyway. Plus he was too distracted by all the other medical reports he had to review to really notice the time.
Setting his folder down, Zayne finally glanced at you, taking in your flushed and slightly disheveled appearance. It was clear you had been in a rush to get here and the thought made the ice of his gaze melt just a little.
Giving him a small, apologetic smile you make your way to the seat opposite him, a sigh of relief escaping your lips as you can finally relax for a moment.
"I'm really sorry, Zayne. I would've been here sooner but I was called into an urgent debriefing at the last minute.... I couldn't get away any faster" you explain quietly, just the thought of the meeting is enough to flood your mind with stress, though you try not to let it show.
Zayne sighs audibly at the mention of a 'debriefing' and decides to drop the matter of your tardiness immediately. Knowing you must've had important things to deal with, his annoyance dissipates. Folding his arms over his chest and leaning his weight back in his chair, his eyes noting the crease in your brow and the dark circles forming under your eyes. "And this was regarding a Wanderer attack, I'm guessing."
Heaving a tired sigh you nod your head in confirmation, running a hand through your slightly messy hair, "... there's been a sudden increase in attacks recently in the mountains. The Hunters Association is planning on sending a team to clear out the wanderers and investigate the source of their appearance..."
Zayne made a mental note of that. Wanderer attacks. Not exactly good news.
When the Hunter's Association made movements like this, that usually meant the situation had become dire or they'd received some alarming intel. Either way, a bit of extra caution wouldn't hurt right about now. Zayne shifted in his seat as he considered his next question.
"Are you going? To the mountains I mean," he asked, looking down at the file in front of him and flipping through your medical history.
Nodding your head in confirmation you let out a nervous exhale, the unusually serious expression on your face causing Zayne's apprehension to rise.
"....That's actually what I wanted to speak with you about..." Pausing for a moment, you consider the easiest way to break the news to him, deciding it's best to just get it over with, like ripping off a band-aid. "I'll be joining the team the Association is sending into the mountains.... There's no way to know how long the mission will take but....they say it will last at least 4 months..."
Zayne froze, although his expression remained calm and professional, his thoughts were anything but.
In the mountains...with wanderers...for up to FOUR MONTHS?!
Clearing his throat, he fought to keep his voice level, "so...I won't see you for four months then." It was all he could manage to get out, not trusting his voice to keep his true emotions concealed.
Swallowing nervously, you stare down at your lap, desperately wanting to avoid his piercing gaze, knowing he would see straight through the brave front you were putting up. "Well, four months is the minimum....it's likely I'll be there longer... And..." Your sentence trails off as you hesitate, reluctant to tell him the truth.
Zayne remains silent, waiting for your answer, but he could already guess the rest. You were going into the mountains, fighting wanderers. If you got injured or--he didn't even want to think about the possibilities.
Four months was already a ridiculous amount of time to spend on this kind of mission, but if something happened before that... he didn't want to entertain the idea.
"...And," he repeated, in a slightly harsher tone than he intended. His thoughts spiralling dangerously with every passing second.
Closing your eyes, you take a deep breath to steady yourself, gathering your courage before continuing in a soft voice, "...the situation in the mountains is pretty bad... The place has essentially become a warzone and we've already lost a lot of hunters.... There's a strong chance that... I won't make it back..."
Won't make it back...
Your words seemed to barely register for Zayne. Won't make it back. He felt like someone had reached inside his chest and squeezed his heart. It was as if time itself has slowed to a halt as this new reality finally sank in. Zayne froze. He was surprised to find his hands clenched into fists at his side and had to make a conscious effort to unclench them.
He stared straight at you with a blank expression as he forced himself to stay calm. He wouldn't-couldn't- let himself lose his composure. Not now, not in front of you. "I see.... Why are you telling me this?"
Finally you look up to meet his gaze, eyes softening as you take in all the small details of his face, wanting to commit them to memory. You struggle to keep your voice steady, not wanting to breakdown in front of Zayne. "I'm telling you because you're my friend. You're someone I care about and i-.... I felt I owed it to you to tell you this myself"
Your eyes held his for a moment longer than he was comfortable with and Zayne was sure you could see it as well. A tightness formed in his throat as he fought to keep his the thin string he was hanging on by from snapping.
"I see," he said, his voice flat. "You're going to the mountains to fight wanderers and there is a strong possibility that you'll not return." It hurt to even say the words. "Is there anything else?"
Your eyes widen at his matter-of-fact tone, not expecting his complete lack of concern. It hurt to see how stoic he was, to know that the news of your possible death didn't seem to affect him at all. You had so much more you wanted to tell him but his indifference made you second-guess whether to continue or just leave. After a short internal debate you decide to just tell him what you want to say, even if he didn't care at least you could leave here without any regrets.
"...I just wanted to say that I appreciate everything you've done for me.... And if this is the last time I get to see you, then I want you to know that the time I've spent with you has been the happiest time of my life...." Your voice trembles, breaking slightly as you try to hold back the tears threatening to fall.
Zayne felt his chest get tighter as your words sank in. A small amount of moisture built up in his eyes but he refused to let it fall, biting his lip as he looked down at the files on his desk, their words blurring as his vision became clouded with tears.
the... the happiest time of your life...
His brows furrowed together as a frown crossed his face.
...if nothing else... If something did happen... Was the time he spent with you... the happiest time for him as well?
Finally. His expression shifted as the dam broke and his control slipped.
"y/n..."
He stood up, taking a quick step and grabbing your hands before you could pull away. And then he pulled you towards him in a tight embrace, taking in your scent, feeling your heartbeat pounding against his chest.
"This is NOT the last time you will see me," he whispered, his voice filled with vulnerability and fear.
You freeze, caught off guard by his sudden embrace, mind racing at the raw emotion in his voice. You're quick to accept his comforting hold on you, melting into his touch and burying your face into his chest, your arms wrapping around him tightly, clinging to him like a lifeline. "...you can't guarantee that, Zayne.... Neither of us can..." Your words are whispered softly, carrying the weight of your sadness.
Zayne ran his hands down your spine, cupping the small of your back and pulling you closer to his chest. He didn't respond, just held you, trying to imprint this moment into his brain. This... This could be the last time he held you and he wanted to remember everything, from the feel of your skin to the scent of your combined body heat.
"I'm not trying to guarantee anything," he uttered, squeezing you tighter than he intended but he didn't care. The pain that he felt thinking about you dying... he couldn't put it into words.
"I'm saying that I won't lose you. I won't accept that!" Zayne leaned down and pressed his lips firmly against yours, the desire to keep his self-control intact long gone. If you were really going off to the mountain for months, he wanted to be able to feel you. He wanted you close so badly it hurt.
Leaning into his touch, you eagerly return the kiss with equal passion, hands tangling into his raven hair. A soft sigh escapes your lips, your heart fluttering as you lose yourself to the feeling of his lips on yours.
Zayne's hands wander down your body, gripping tight around your hips. His lips met yours again and again, every kiss taking him closer and closer to heaven. He could feel himself getting swept away in the moment and losing his inhibitions. The urge to hold you tight never left and only grew until he wanted to press you to the wall and refuse to let go. But he forced his emotions back under control, knowing that there were more important things to discuss.
He finally pulled away, letting it sink in that this could truly be the last time you would meet.
Your eyes flutter open, meeting the captivating green of his intense gaze. When you speak your voice is soft, barely above a whisper, but your tone is filled with a deep sadness. ".... Zayne.... I want you to know that whatever happens.... I love you"
His heart lurched at your words. He had always thought there was no way to make this situation any worse than it already was. But your confession made it so much harder.
He couldn't let his emotions get the best of him, not under these circumstances, but his voice remained soft when he finally spoke. "I have something I want you to know as well," he said, leaning down and pressing his forehead against yours. "Even if we don't get to meet again... know that I love you as well."
His confession causes your breath to hitch, heart fluttering as it swells with joy, knowing the feelings you've harboured for so long are reciprocated. You let out a soft sigh, breathing in his familiar, soothing scent, your hands gently stroke through his hair.
"....I wish I had told you how I felt sooner, we could've had more time together.... But at least now I know you feel the same way I do...." You try to keep your voice light, though the regret lacing your words is poignant, sending a wave of warmth through Zayne. Despite everything he could feel his own emotions starting to come back under control, some level of calm returning the longer this moment went on.
You were right, you could have had more time together... He had pushed you away so many times during your appointments and now he was being haunted by the possibility he had wasted too much time.
But at least now... he would know he had said the right thing in your last moments together.
"...We both feel the same way," he repeated, almost in disbelief.
A soft yet sad smile forms on your lips, the thoughts of what could have been weighing heavily in your mind, and the possibility of this being your last moment together causes your heart to ache. "....I swear that I'll do everything in my power to stay alive.... I don't want this to be the last time I see you.... But if I don't make it back, just know that I fought as hard as I could"
You promised to stay alive, but Zayne could hear the defeat in your tone, the fear and worry of the possibility of never seeing him again hanging in both of your minds like a dark cloud.
He squeezed your hands, not wanting to let go even though he knew he'd have to at some point. His eyes never left yours as he considered his response.
"I will do everything in my power to make sure this isn't the last time we see each other." He tightened his embrace, refusing to let go for even a second. "But if you don't come back..."
His voice broke for a moment as the pain threatened to overwhelm him. "Know that I will wait for you. Forever if I have to."
You swallow the lump in your throat, desperately trying to hold back the tears threatening to fall as the pain of having to leave him becomes almost suffocating. taking a deep shaky breath, you look into his eyes, seeing yourself reflected in the deep green.
"...I have to go.... The team are waiting for me..." Even though you whisper softly that you need to leave, your body makes no move to tear itself away from his warm embrace.
The reality of how little time you have left together hits Zayne like a freight train. His body freezes. He couldn't bear the thought of letting you go, as if his body would fall apart if he lost contact with yours even for a second.
"Please..." his voice was pleading now. He didn't care if he sounded weak, desperate even. "Just a few more moments, that's all I ask."
Sighing softly you hold him tighter, you couldn't bring yourself to deny his request, especially when he sounded so broken and desperate to keep you close to him. You could feel your heart cracking at the realisation that once you let him go, you'd have to leave him behind.
"Okay...just a little longer..."
And so he held you, content to simply stay like this, breathing in your scent, running his fingers through your hair, feeling the softness of you against him. Just another minute or two, anything to delay the inevitable and keep you here, safe in his arms.
Unfortunately the moment is cut short by the beeping of your phone, a cruel reminder that your time together is over. You sigh in frustration, glaring at the offensive object as it continued to ring, signalling that you had to leave. Silencing the call, you turn back to Zayne, a sad smile on your face as you both share a silent understanding that this is it.
"I don't like this," he murmured, his voice low as his eyes met yours in a moment of shared disappointment. You had both spent too long not telling each other the truth and now you were forced to suffer the consequences. Even just another minute together would have made it so much easier to bear.
"I don't either..." You agree quietly, your trembling voice showing just how truly devastated you are to have to go "...I guess this is goodbye...."
"For now." He whispered firmly, hesitant to allow even the possibility that you wouldn't come back, and his words were as much for his own sake as yours. The seconds seemed to stretch out and fly by all too quickly, and Zayne didn't want to be the one to let go first, afraid of what would happen the second you parted.
"Come back to me, okay?" His voice was tight and strained, hand reaching up to gently brush a loose strand of hair out of your eyes. "Come back to me and keep that promise you made."
Leaning into his touch, your eyes flutter closed briefly, a stray tear rolling down your cheek. "...I will... I'll come back to you and I'll never leave again... I promise, this won't be the last time we see each other." Your voice is full of determination despite the way it trembles.
And Zayne believes you, with every fiber of his being wanting to believe you, wanting to trust that you would make it back. That he wouldn't lose you so cruelly to something neither of you had any control over.
"I'll wait, even if I have to wait forever."
His words were soft yet full of a quiet ferocity. He would wait for you, even if the world burned down around him. He wanted you to know that he would do whatever it took to make your promise come true, no matter how long it took.

Your frustration mounts as you click the permissions again to allow the camera and microphone access. It’s so annoying! It just keeps running you in circles. Great. This is off to a good start. Late for the interview. That’s always the best first impression.
When at last your firewall stops blocking the call, you flinch at the sight of yourself in the corner. You’re further jarred by the man staring back at you. Your mouth opens and for a moment, you’re frozen. You were so focused on troubleshooting, you forgot about what was waiting on the other end.
“Oh, hi,” you squeak. “Sorry, I--” you look around, glancing through the clear walls of the library study room. It’s the first time you’ve been to this branch but you didn’t think the clutter of your apartment would make a good backdrop. “I was having issues with my camera.”
“Quite alright,” he responds with a grin and a lilted accent. He sounds as professional as he looks.
He wears a grey jacket over a muted teal shirt that lights up his eyes, even over the screen. His short hair is combed back neatly and there’s not a speck of stubble on his jaw. Under the structure of his attire you can tell he’s well-built.
You resist the urge to look down at yourself. A white blouse. Boring but professional. It gets the job done. Hopefully.
You force a smile.
“Thank you for meeting with me,” he begins through your nervous silence. “I do appreciate your time and I would hate to waste it. So, we can hop right in.” He looks unflinchingly into the camera, “oh, let us not go so far past courtesy. I am James, we’ve been corresponding, yes?”
“Uh, yeah, I remember. James.” You gulp.
He says your name with a keen inclination. “This is rather not the position which requires those cliche questions so I won’t trouble you with asking what animal best reflects your personality.”
You cough out a humouring chuckle and fold your hands on the desk.
“Forgive if I should seem to the point. You see, it’s a very practical position. I think it’s best we go over what is expected before we go into the finer details; expenses, relocation, dates--”
“Mm,” you squeak and put a finger up, “s-sorry, um, I thought we were interviewing but it sound like you’ve made a decision?”
“Well, yes, I’ve reviewed your CV and your submitted profile and your answers to the questionnaire were acceptable. I didn’t think there was much else to consider,” he intones. You shift and try to hide your surprise.
“No, of course, that makes sense,” you say. “Thanks, I guess I was confused.”
“Not to worry. I find that written communication can often lack clarity so I thought it best we have a face-to-face in this circumstance,” he looks down as if he has a book or paper before him. “So, did you have any questions before I proceed?”
“No, no, really, I'm sure you’ll answer them all.” Your cheeks bloom in a half-smile. You were so nervous about getting the job but you’ve already got it.
“Right then,” he sits back and once more stares down the camera. “It is a very old property but the upkeep has been consistent. There should not be any glaring necessities for maintenance, this more of a custodial position. So, you would be the one to keep the place clean, make sure it is aired out, tend to the lawns but we do employ a grounds keeping service that comes fortnightly to trim.”
You nod. It’s intriguing. You were sent photos of the property but you’re not quite sure of its purpose. Judging by the clustered pines in the background, you would guess it’s remote. A getaway that could be a goldmine for those wanting a vacation from the urban jungle.
“You would have a roster, you see, of those you could contact for service so you will not require any specialisations. You are the day-to-day and would be expected to bring in the appropriate support for higher-touch difficulties.”
“Right,” you try not to show your anxiety.
“Albeit I should warn you that the reception in that location is not the greatest so if you cannot call out, you would need to keep trying. It will eventually catch but uh, not to mind, as long it is attended is what matters, not when,” he says.
“Mhm, that makes sense. Um, can I ask what the property is? Is it like a summer home or...”
“Ah, family inheritance,” he answers primly. “I’ve not much use for it past the sentimental value and I thought of leasing it for traveling parties but I’ve heard horror stories. Right now, I’m merely sitting on it until I figure out exactly what to do with it.”
“Oh, right. Wow. Quite the inheritance.”
“Hm, yes, my uncle did rather adore me. I was the only one named in his will but he was a bit of a curmudgeon.” He laughs. “Now, I must ask the most important question--”
Before he can, the door swings open and you jump in your seat. Your heart sinks. You signed the room out for ninety minutes. You thought it would be more than enough. Surely it hasn’t been that long.
Shoot. It’s him. How did he find you? You deliberately went out of your way so that he couldn’t.
“Jake,” you stand and turn to him, trying to block the computer. “What are you doing?”
“There you are,” he touches his chest as if he should be the one so afraid. “You didn’t come home--”
You growl and cross your arms.
“Jake, go away,” you grit out. “Not right now. Please.”
“I had to make sure you’re okay,” he steps into the room and you push yourself back against the table. “Who else is going to look after you?”
“I will scream, alright,” you warn. “Now leave me alone. I’m tired of telling you.”
He sighs and his jaw squares. “I don’t get you. You act like I’m such a bad guy and I haven’t done anything to you. I never hurt you but you hurt me. You just spit in my face--”
“Pardon,” the voice rises from the speaker at your back. “If I may, she is occupied and you are interrupting. I have a mind to contact emergency service should you persist.” Your mouth falls open and you turn to look at your laptop. James leans forward to glare at the lens, “Not sure who you are, fellow, but the lady has been clear.”
“Who-- who is he?” Jake sputters.
“Please, just go,” you plead. “Or I will call the police.”
Little good they will do, you think, but that doesn’t need to be said aloud.
He frowns and his eyes glint dangerously. You stare back at him, tense, fingers curling and uncurling nervously. That man on the screen won’t stop him and you don’t know if anyone would hear you from the desk.
“Fine, guess I’ll see ya around,” he relents and backs out.
You don’t move until he snaps the door shut. You hurry over and twist the lock on the inside. You don’t know why you didn’t do that before.
“Are you alright?” James asks, drawing you back to the desk.
You sit and look at the keyboard, “I’m very sorry. I...”
“He doesn’t sound like a friend,” James says. You shake your head. “Well, then, it does sound like you’re in need of a fresh start. I do hope this can be that for you.”
You look up and bat away the glimmer on the brims of your eyes. You’re not just afraid, you’re embarrassed. His kindness is as comforting as it is unexpected.
“Thanks, um, anyway...” you exhale, “you were going to ask something.”
“Yes, uh, yes, I was,” he reconfigures and puts another smile on. “When can you depart? I would of course arrange travel to be sure you get here safe and sound.”
“Oh, when... whenever is best. Not to be too desperate but as soon as possible,” you say.
“Wonderful,” he praises, “absolutely wonderful. Is tomorrow too soon? Pardon my own desperation.”
“Tomorrow?” You utter and shake your head. “Tomorrow. Yeah, tomorrow.”
It's sudden and scary but it’s good. The sooner you go, the less time Jake has to figure out what you’re doing. The less chance he can follow. It’s an escape. Not a perfect one but it’s all you have.
🩸
You spend all night packing. You parse down what you have to the essentials and put the rest in bags. You don’t care about the furniture. You say as much in your email to your landlord, telling him to use your deposit for the disposal.
You whittle your life down to three bags. A large suit case, a knapsack, and a single purse. You have it ready to go by the door.
You feel uneasy about it. You stare at your luggage, the lights off, windows closed. Your phone buzzes and you put it to silent, ignoring the messages from your personal pest. You’ll be done with him too. You wonder if you should just toss your cell.
You don’t sleep. You can’t. You still can’t believe you’re getting out. You hope you haven’t given the game away.
There’s a tap on the window. You nearly roll onto the floor. You look over and hear it again, a harder impact. Are you serious? He’s throwing stones. He could break the damn glass.
You shake your head. You won’t fall for it. Not again. You remember when he came to your door and cried until you opened up. He even smeared ketchup on his face to make you think he was hurt. It’s hard to tell the difference through a peephole.
Almost there. Almost out. You just need to make it a few more hours.
As you ignore the incessant tapping and the light of your phone glowing ever few minutes, your thoughts turn bitter. You should message everyone who turned their back on you and tell them exactly what they’ve put you through. Somehow, you think they’d care as much as they did before.
Sleep eludes you but a foggy daze comes over you as the windows soften with the early morning. There’s no more pebbles bouncing off the pane. Just you and the buzz of the sleeping city.
Your alarm chimes and you get up as your head pulses. You’re used to the constant fatigue. It will ease up and you’ll just feel a bit heavy. When it’s normal, you don’t notice as much.
You get ready and have an instant coffee by the door. James messages just before nine. Your car will be there in ten. Oh, early. You don’t mind about that.
You won’t go out and wait. You’ll stay here, where it’s safe.
When your phone goes off again, you expect it to be Jake. It’s James. Whew. You’re so close, you can’t believe it.
You grab your knapsack and purse, and drag your suitcase out behind you. You lock the door and throw the key through the mail slot. You hurry down the hall and take the stairs over the elevator.
You don’t look back or anyway but forward. You look at your cell. 'Black Jaguar’ followed by a plate number. Jaguar? Holy moly.
The tinted window rolls down and reveals the same face from the Zoom call. You didn’t know he was coming himself. You assumed he was sending a cab or something. You slow as you come out the door. He smiles and pops open the door.
Before you can come forward, another figure appears, blocking your way.
“Hey, I've been calling all night,” Jake says. You stop short and nearly yelp. Of course!
“Jake, move.”
“Where are you going?” He looks at your bags desperately. “Wait, you can’t--”
“Pardon me, sir, is there some issue?” James strides up behind him.
Jake turns to face him and stiffens, “and who are you—wait, you’re that guy from the computer.”
“I’m none of your business, as is her life,” James insists. “Now, seems you’re used to picking on those smaller than you but let’s see how you do against me?”
James steps closer. He’s a few inches taller than Jake. You can’t move as they stare each other down. You wait, expecting chaos.
“I was only talking,” Jake shows his palms and shrugs. “It’s whatever. She’s a bitch anyways.”
He turns and snarls over his shoulder at you. You back up. As Jake turns, he’s knocked off kilter as James hurls his fist into his jaw. The shorter man staggers and falls to one knee, catching himself in the grass.
“Well, that was a lovely chat,” James smirks and beckons to you, “shall we?”
