Magische Linten (Magic Ribbons)
Contains: Dutch expressions (as a fandom, we forgot too fast that Kerch is a fantasy Dutch and that Kaz used dutch words in the books, like "ja". We should remember it). I used the translator for this, so if there are any mistakes, please let me know. Mentions of the Wandering Isle's culture about Grisha, which includes blood and questionable medical practices. Use some ocs. Saskia is a real character in the books, if you read them, you know who she is. I simply created an oc based on her.
(This follows the plot of the first book, Six of Crows, and not the show Shadow and Bone, althought it will contain references to it because I loved it too)
"There's no way"
"Seriously, I'm not lying"
"It cannot be true"
"Yes, it is. I can vanish anything in my hands and make it appear again somewhere else"
"ÂżAre you a Grisha?"
"Natuurlijk niet!* It's only a magic trick. I learnt it by watching one of those men with colorful clothes in the street. I think it's called 'illusionism' or something like that"
Saskia frowned. She knew what men he was referring to, but she never heard that word before. It sounded suspicious in her ears.
"ÂżAren't what Grisha do basically magic tricks too?"
"Well, technically yes, but it's not the same. Anyone can do this if they learn and practice enough, but not everyone can do what a Grisha can, no matter how much they learn"
"I'm not sure. That trick you said sounded very Grisha-like to me"
"Fine! If you don't believe me, let me show you. I swear it has nothing to do with Grisha."
Saskia didn't quite buy it. It wasn't like she was worried that the boy would hurt her, but what he said sounded very weird. Where she came from, it was said that Grisha were dangerous and the only good thing they had was their blood, which could cure sickness. She remembered briefly when a doctor took some blood out of her when she had fever, and she cried the whole process. She couldn't understand how Grisha were capable of going through that so often, and voluntarily at that. They weren't normal.
But if he said he wasn't a Grisha, Saskia chose to believe him. Her "father" told her these boys were innocent, simple-minded. Her new friend had no reason to lie.
"Oké*, but make it fast. And if you hurt me, I'll hit you"
"I barely have to touch you, I just need something small. A pencil, or a button"
While they looked around them, Saskia brushed some strands from her eyes. She hated how her "mother" styled her hair, with ridiculous ties and curls. That's when she felt one of the ribbons she wore, and had an idea.
"Here", she took one of them off and gave it to him, "Use this"
He blinked at her, surprised.
"ÂżAre you sure? I don't-"
"You say you can make it appear again, ja? Besides, I have many more like this, so I don't mind if you lose this one"
He stared down at the red ribbon in his hand, his cheeks blushing in a expression akin to flusterment. Like he was holding 100 kruge in his palm instead of a simple piece of silk. When his eyes met Saskia's again, there was no sign of that expression. She was silently impressed with his quick facial control.
"Oké, now let us start!"
He smiled with confidence, and Saskia couldn't help but smile in return at his enthusiasm.
The boy proceeded to turn the ribbon around in his hands, twisting it with before her eyes, until suddenly...it dissapeared. Just like that, she was seeing it clearly one moment and the next she didn't anymore. No noise or twitch that signaled where it went. Saskia's mouth was wide open.
"What the-how did you do that?! You had it in your hand, I was seeing it! How is this possible? It just...vanished"
Instead of answering, the boy chuckled at her. He extended his hands towards her wrist, slowly, and stopped right where his fingers brushed her pulse point. He became still for a moment, worrying Saskia a bit with his lack of movement. Then, with a graceful twist of his hand, he started to move his hand away, and Saskia felt something soft sliding down her wrist.
It was the red ribbon.
She couldn't hide her fascination.
"Dat is geweldig!* How did you do it? I didn't feel it getting under my sleeve, nor I noticed it was there. How can it be?", she narrowed her eyes in suspicion at him, "ÂżAre you sure you're not a Grisha?"
When her eyes focused on him, she saw something weird. His cheeks were blushing, which didn't make sense because it wasn't that cold in the room. They had been mostly near the functioning chimney since they arrived. ÂżWas he getting sick?
"Hey, Âżare you alright? Your face is getting red"
"Ah, uhm, I...it's nothing. I was just nervous that...it didn't work out. Yup, that's it", the boy shook his head, like he just broke out of a trance, and scratched his neck as he turned his eyes away. "And ja, I'm sure I'm not a Grisha. Like I said, anyone can do this"
"Oh, oké then", she had the feeling there was something else, but she got distracted quickly. "Well, I can't do it, and I'm very smart"
He chuckled softly.
"It has nothing to do if you're smart or not. You can't do it because you never practiced. If you tried, I bet you'll do it better than me", his cheeks reddened again, and Saskia thought he looked very cute like that, "You're the most talented person I know. You'll be probably good at everything."
"Well, I wouldn't say that either," now it was her turn to blush, "I read a lot of books, and my brot-my parents teach me many things, so that's why I know some stuff."
There was a pause between them, a comfortable silence that felt unusual in them. Whenever they were together, they talked nonstop and they didn't know how to stay still. Which was good for Saskia, because she couldn't stand silences. They made her nervous and uneasy, and she couldn't afford that. Not with him.
"Can I tell you something, Saskia?"
His voice sounded low out of sudden, and his eyes were fixed on her.
"Natuurlijk*, why do you ask?"
"It's just...I really like being with you and I don't want to bother you."
"I don't think you can do anything to bother me, dummy. Go on, what is it?"
He looked at her straight in her eyes, smiling shyly, but with a firm determination sparkling in his orbs.
"You're beau-"
The door was slammed open, showing Saskia's "father" and another boy with him.
"Here you are, ducklings", the man's deep voice captured the children's attention, "I'm sorry, boy, we lost track of time. Saskia, say goodbye to your friend, they're leaving."
"But pappa*, we still haven't-" she stopped herself when the man gave her a significant look. She bit her lip and nodded. "Oké"
They stood up, with Saskia brushing off her skirt and the boy fixing up his jacket. They walked side by side towards the exit, with Saskia's father and the older boy in front of them.
Just when the brothers were about to leave, her friend turned back to her abruptly.
"Wait! Saskia, take your ribbon. I forgot I had it", he extended his hand towards her, with the red silk still in his fingers, but the girl shook her head.
"Don't bother, you can keep it", she pushed his hand back gently. "It's a gift."
He stared at her perplexed.
"What are you saying? Are you sure?"
"Ja. Consider it a thanks for showing me that amazing trick. I loved it", she showed him a genuine smile, and he looked away again. "And if your hairs grows, you can use it to tie it back."
He scoffed playfully, glancing back at her with another smile.
"Yeah, sure, keep dreaming. No way I'm wearing that", his face softened. "See you tomorrow, I guess."
Something warm twisted in Saskia's chest. She pushed it back where it came from.
"Ja, see you tomorrow. And I hope you bring some new tricks. Now I want to see more of them."
He chuckled. Saskia was starting to find the sound very pleasant. She thought she wouldn't mind hearing it more often, and a sense of dread assaulted her. She shouldn't be having these thoughts.
"Ik beloof het*"
And after that exchange, they bid their goodbyes, both still smiling as the distance between them grew. She felt the firm hand of her "vader*" squeezing her shoulder almost painfully. A silent reminder.
A warning.
"Didn't you hear? The Black Tips are dust now. That idioot Geels emptied the vaults to get on the Dregs' bad side, and the Brekker demon sent them all packing with their tails between the legs."
"Ja, they even came up with a song for it. 'The Durstraat is on fire and the Dregs don't have no water'. I heard it when I passed by their nest."
"Cocky klootzakken*. But I guess we can thank them for riding us from those rats. One less headache to deal with."
Those were the first sentences that Diantha heard as soon as she set a foot in the Emerald Palace. She twirled her way through the gaming tables towards the bar, expertly avoiding the waving hands and listening their talks about the latest news. The fall from grace of the Black Tips.
It didn't catch her by surprise at all. She already heard what happened on her way to the Palace, and haven't she been busy with her last minute assignment at First Harbor, she would've likely gone to witness the whole mess in front row from one of the rooftops. However, she didn't feel dissapointed for having missed it, considering the interesting events that transcurred in First Harbor and that she got to see by herself.
In the bar counter, she found Jesse rearranging some bottles and greeting her with a nod.
"Welcome back, Krett. I take it that it was a successful inspection."
"What makes you think that?"
"Your clothes are still intact and you don't have an ounce of dirt on your face, so I assume there were no fights or accidents. Plus, you have that spark in your eyes from when you got your hands on something valuable and can't wait to show it."
She grinned. She didn't expect less from the Emerald Palace's head bartender. After so many years working behind the counter, Jesse learnt to be particularly observant with people, which allowed him to charm them into a false sense of trust as he filled their cups and pried secrets from their loose mouths. Also, he had known Diantha since she was a kid, freshly initiated into the Dime Lions after her brother, so it wasn't surprising he could read her so easily.
"Well, the boss may feel conflicted with the news, but I think it'll distract him enough from the last fiasco."
"I hope so. I'm afraid he's going to be in a sour mood for the following hours, and it'll be nice to keep his attention away from us."
"Is he really that pissed about the Black Tips?"
"I guess it has more to do with the Brekker boy twerfing his plans once again rather than loosing those oafs."
Diantha felt her body tense, just like everytime someone mentioned him.
Kaz Brekker, the Dregs' lieutenant, and Pekka Rollins' biggest headache. His long story of crimes and blood stained hands, all in the name of profit, gave him the nickname Dirtyhands. Because there was no line he wasn't willing to cross to get what he wanted. People whispered his name in fear and cowered at the sound of his lethal cane tapping the ground as he walked. Not even the Dime Lions were immune to his terrifying presence, but they knew better than to show it when Rollins was near.
She would never admit it, but Diantha was also a bit intimidated by him. Their paths had crossed only a handful times, but when they did, it always ended with painful reminders carved in each other's skins. Some of them permanent and impossible to conceal, just as the one she carried on her left hand, or the one that made him rely on his cane to move. But that wasn't what made her feel so wary of him, no.
It was his eyes. There was just something in them when he looked at her that made her very...uneasy. Like he was about to lunge at her at any moment, but she couldn't figure out when. It unnerved her, not being able to predict his movements. He looked at her like that even since before the "incident", so she assumed it was due to her being a Dime Lion. They were enemies after all, and he was clearly set on ruining Rollins' empire, so it made sense he despised her. The "incident" just gave him another reason to do so.
She shook her head to expel any thoughts about him. It wasn't the time to divagate about whether the Bastard of the Barrel had personal reasons to hate her or not. Plus, trying to figure out the mind of someone like him would only drain her own sanity in the process.
Right now, she had crucial information to report to her already angry boss, and Saints knew how he could get if she made him wait.
Kaz Brekker had no power over her, but Pekka Rollins very much did and would gladly use it. And that was enough to push Dirtyhands out of her head at once.
"Really? You think it's wise leaving it like that, with the Black Tips still fuming and crawling around?"
"It's the right course of action. By the way, go call Jesper and Muzzen. I want them here at sunrise. And have Wylan wait for me at the Crow Club tomorrow night."
"Wylan? If you say the job is so important..."
"Just do it."
Inej crossed her arms, glaring at him with the same sharpness as her precious knives. He was sure she was considering murdering him right there.
"Are you going to give me any details, Kaz?"
"Once we're all reunited", he put on a clean shirt and buttoned it up as he walked to his dresser. "This isn't an order, Inej. It's another job, which you're free to accept or deny."
He finished with the buttons, throwing on next a grey vest with little pockets sewn discreetly underneath, perfect to keep tools he didn't want others to find out. Just when Inej opened her mouth, probably to ask something again, someone knocked at the door.
"Kom binnen*" he answered, barely looking at who entered.
It was Rotty, with a solemn expression that clashed vastly from his previous cheeriness.
"Hallo*, sir. We just received news from the Shu's cargment of gold that arrived this morning", he spoke in a rush. "The Merchant Council plan on keeping the ship docked at the port, under the stadswacht's surveillance, until further notice."
"Well, it was to be expected. That stunt Shu Han pulled made their plans a bit more complicated for the future. They'll refrain from touching the gold until they're completely sure of it", he hummed. "But why are you telling me this? That cargment of Shu gold isn't a priority now."
"Sir", Rotty stuttered, avoiding Kaz's dark eyes. "Pekka Rollins knows"
The temperature in the room went down drastically. Kaz freezed in the spot, under Inej's attentive gaze.
"And...?"
He had a feeling of where this was going. Rotty never stuttered before when he mentioned Rollins to him, unless...
"He sent one of the Krett siblings to cover First Harbor, sir."
There it was.
He felt that familiar fire at his stomach, like everytime he heard that name. He could feel the burning climb up his throat, setting his insides on an inferno.
He let out a raspy, humourless chuckle. He should have expected it. Pekka Rollins wouldn't have turn away from such a delicious, tempting treasure, not when he was still trying to plant his roots inside the Merchant Council's core. And of course, he would have sent his favourite puppet to follow the whole operation.
He knew one of the Kretts was out of the Barrel at the moment, so that only left one for the job. Her.
"Thank you for telling me, Rotty. This definitely supposes a change in our plans", he pulled out a new set of gloves and fastened the buttons around his wrists, rather hastly. "We should reconsider First Harbor's importance for us. You can leave now."
Rotty nodded and left the room almost running. Inej eyed him warily. She knew too what that information meant to him. What the infamous lioness caused.
"What do you have in mind now, Kaz?"
He didn't answer inmediately. His gloved fingers went inside the drawer again, brushing against a worn out piece of red silk he kept hidden in there, only for his eyes to see. A trinklet from a painful dream, a reminder of what his goals were.
He closed it again with a loud thump, before walking out of the room without a single word, leaving the ribbon hidden underneath the documents once again.
(One day, she'll be hidden too, where only he could see her and grasp her)
A/N: Inspired by my discussions with @stayconnecteed about her awesome aus for six of crows and my own silly headcanons. She also happens to be the one who came up with that beautiful cover, so all credit to her. And @mrsmiroir, because we both wanted to see more of Saskia so my mind created this.

EVERYTHING
Kaz Brekker x Reader
Summary - Kaz Brekker doesn't make any senseâand trying to understand him is getting to be exhausting.
Warnings - fem!reader, reader worked at a brothel, subtle hints at past abuse, some major dog / master symbolism idfk, mentions of blood/weapons, close proximity, could deviate some from canon, based more on book!kaz than show, NOT EDITED SO IF THERE'S A TYPO IDK
Word Count - 3.8k
!MINORS DNI!
// masterlist // send me your thoughts // comments & reblogs appreciated! //
âTouch me.âÂ
Youâve only just slipped inside Kaz Brekkerâs room at the Slat, and youâre convinced youâve misheard him. The doorâs still cracked, after allâand the mindless clamor of those playing cards down in the foyer is loud enough to play tricks on anyoneâs ears.Â
You push the door shut, habit making you click the lock into place before spinning around to face him. âPardon?âÂ
The lanterns burn low, dim light chasing shadows across the spacious attic. Kaz stands over by his desk, leaning his weight against the edge in lieu of his cane. Heâs dragging a gloved hand through his hair, looking uncharacteristically flustered.Â
âDonât act like you didnât hear me,â he snaps.Â
Your laugh comes out breathy and awkward. âWe both know Iâm a shit actor, Brekker.âÂ
Itâs why youâre never picked when the Dregâs need a decoyâsome girl to saddle up next to a sleazy merchant or another hapless mark, distracting them with batted lashes and a well-timed hand on their thigh. In Jesperâs words, youâre so socially inept that youâd probably blow the operation before it even got started.
To your dismay, Kaz doesnât repeat himself. With his gaze carefully pinned to the tops of his black boots, he demands, âWhy are you here?âÂ
Your brow quirks. âAt the Slat?âÂ
âIn my room.âÂ
The answer eludes you. Why did you come up here? Itâs not like tonight was the first time Dirtyhands has ever skipped out on playing Blackjack with the rest of the group, and yet heâd caught your attention when he slipped from the foyer and went limping up the stairs.Â
Then again, thatâs not so surprising. Kaz always catches your eye, doesnât he?Â
In the year since you joined the Dregs, youâd earned an unfortunate nickname for yourself around the Barrel: The Bastardâs Pet. Wherever Kaz Brekker goes, youâre sure to be hot on his heels, following after him like a dog, loyal and clingy.Â
You tell yourself itâs because thatâs your jobâto keep Kaz safe, to watch his six. But the devilâs got eyes in the back of his head, and you know Kaz Brekker doesnât really need protection.Â
So, it begs the question: Why are you here? In his room, at the Slat, as a member of the Dregs? Why does he keep you around?Â
Unsure of the answer, you simply avoid giving one.Â
âYou should play games with them sometimes,â you tell him, giving a subtle nod over your shoulder. Their voices are muffled now, but you can still hear everyone downstairs exchanging jeers as they shuffle another round. âIt makes you look like a recluse, always sneaking off to be by yourself.âÂ
Kaz drums one finger against the desk. Itâs an erratic beat, following no set rhythm. âI am a recluse,â he grinds out.Â
You almost snort. Clearly.Â
Itâs not like anyone joins a gang with the hopes of making friendsâand none of the Dregs are dumb enough to think theyâll find a buddy in the infamous Dirtyhands, anyway. Still, you donât think itâd kill him to try being a little more sociable.Â
The others would like having him around.Â
You like having him around.Â
âIâll ask one more time.â Dark eyes flick up, heavy as stones when they land on yours. Suddenly, the large attic feels awfully claustrophobic. âWhy are you here?âÂ
A lie comes easily enough, slipping right through your teeth.Â
âI got bored playing,â you tell him. âAnd Jesperâs cheating, anyway.âÂ
âTheyâre all cheating,â Kaz points out.Â
âBut Jesperâs bad at it,â you argue. Lifting a shoulder, you add, âIt ruins the fun.âÂ
His finger falls still against the desk, ceasing its rhythmless beat. Warm light flickers all around him, dark shadows dancing over the harsh angles of his face. You watch his jaw tick, note the subtle curl of his upper lip. Youâre overcome with the distinct feeling that youâre staring down the barrel of a loaded gun.Â
Probably because you are.Â
Youâve seen this face before. Been the one to clean the bloody mess left behind by whoever was unfortunate enough to find themselves on the receiving end of it. Now, as the one standing in the line of fire, you feel your stomach start to twist.Â
You tell yourself itâs dread. Anxiety for whatâs to come.Â
âFrom where I was standing,â Kaz grinds out, his stare unflinching, âyou looked to be having plenty ofâŠâ A sharp breath, his tongue gliding over pearly teeth. âFun.âÂ
Thereâs something hidden in the word. A meaning that goes well beyond its dictionary definition. Is it a challenge? A dare, maybe? Orâperhaps the most unlikely of the optionsâsome sort of plea?Â
âAnd what is that supposed to mean?â you ask, finally daring a step closer, slowly drifting from the closed door.Â
Kaz shakes his head. âIt means what it means.âÂ
As you draw closer, he moves around the desk and takes a seat. He stretches his bad leg out in front of him, mindlessly rubbing a hand down toward his knee. Itâs always bothering him by this point in the night.Â
âGo back downstairs.â An orderânot a suggestion.Â
Across from him now, you place both palms on his desk. The smooth wood is cool against your skin, though the rest of you feels impossibly warm. Itâs a side effect of standing too close to him, you think. The flushed cheeks and the vice around your lungs, always leaving your mind fuzzy and your pulse erratic.Â
You hate him for it, sometimes. For the effect he has on you.Â
âWhy?â you ask, riding out your little bold streak. âSo you have a reason to gripe some more about me having fun?âÂ
âIâm not griping,â Kaz shoots back, very evidently griping.Â
âGriping, carping, quibbling, or complainingâdoesnât matter how you word it, all of 'em fit you to a T right now, Brekker.âÂ
Heâs not looking at you anymore, focused instead on the swirling patterns of the wood grain or the neat stack of papers or anything else that gives him an excuse to keep his head low. A month or so after you joined the Dregs, Kaz told you that you had a talent for getting under his skin. Maybe thatâs why you donât need to be able to see his face to know just how annoyed he looks.Â
âGo downstairs.âÂ
âI will,â you vow. âAfter you explain what you meant.âÂ
Frustrated, he insists, âThereâs nothing to explain.âÂ
âWhat did you say when I came in?âÂ
âGo downstairs.âÂ
You throw your hands up. âIf you wonât tell me what you said, then at least explain why âfunâ is such a problem!âÂ
âGo. Down. Stairs.âÂ
âMake me.âÂ
Wood screeches, the chair flying back as he shoots to his feet. The stiffness in his leg makes the movement a little clumsy, and you donât miss the subtlest flash of a wince before he leans against the desk.Â
âDo you know why I brought you in?âÂ
For a moment, itâs all you can do to blink at him. Because, noâyou donât know why Kaz offered you a place with the Dregs.Â
Youâre not a sharpshooter like Jesper or a trained Grisha like Nina, not as smart as Wylan or as silent as Inej. Youâre decent when it comes to sleight-of-hand and slightly above average with a blade, but even those skills are ones youâve only learned since joining the gang.Â
Back when you first met Kaz, you were nothing and no one. An unlucky girl roped into an indenture with Pekka Rollins, forced to work out of the Sweet Shopâthe nastiest, most dangerous brothel in all of Ketterdam.Â
âBecause youâre secretly a big softie with a heart of gold?â You hope your sarcasm is enough to mask the twinge of shame brought on by your past.Â
But Kaz is too good for that. Nothing gets past himâevident by the tiny wrinkle of concern that forms between his dark brows, instantly picking up on the faint dip in your tone.Â
Fortunately for you, being observant doesnât equate to being consoling, and so he doesnât mention it.Â
âBecause you didnât make me sick,â he answers, low and even. Youâre not so sure if itâs an insult or compliment, and before you get a chance to ask, Kaz continues, âIt was late. And raining. Iâd just finished teaching a Razorgull lackey what happens when you breach parley. He was a real bleederâmade a mess of my suit. I ended up leaving him for Jesper to deal with. Thought Iâd avoid eyes by sticking to the shadows, walking in the alleys behind the brothels.â Your eyes must be betraying you, because you almost think thatâs a smile twitching at the corner of his lips. âImagine my surprise when a runaway harlot nearly knocked a helpless cripple like me off his feet.âÂ
You bite your cheek, still deciding if you want to slap him for calling you a harlot or laugh in his face. In spite of his limp and cane, Kaz Brekker is far from what youâd consider helpless.Â
âSo, what? You had me join the Dregs because I nearly bulldozed you in an alley?â That whole night was spotty for you, the panic youâd felt having rendered your memory foggy and incomplete.Â
âInej had told me about you,â Kaz says. âThat Pekka Rollins got a new girlâan escape artist, always trying her luck at running away.âÂ
You didnât know that, but maybe you should have. Inej isnât the best spider in the Barrel without reason. She knows everythingâand all she knows is reported directly to Kaz. Even so, youâre not sure youâre catching his point with all this.Â
As if he can see you trying to mentally connect the dots, Kaz says, âMaybe I had another purpose in walking behind those brothels. Maybe I wanted to see just how quick on her feet Pekka Rollinsâ escape artist was.â His head tilts slightly. âOr maybe I just didnât want anyone to see me when I wasnât looking my best. Either way, I left that alley knowing youâd be a part of my crew.âÂ
Your memory of that night may be spotty, but the one after is still crystal clear. A Suli spider had crawled through your window at the Sweet Shop, told you that Per Haskell was willing to pay a very hefty sum to buyout your indenture if you agreed to work for the Dregs. To this day, youâre still unsure of how Kaz managed to convince him you were worth itâor why he bothered.Â
âYouâre not making any sense, Brekker,â you admit, rubbing at your temple. A headache burrows there, seeming to grow worse with every minute. âIs that why you wanted me for the Dregs, then? Cause Iâm⊠fast?âÂ
It sounds stupid. It is stupid.Â
Youâre no faster than anyone elseâand you certainly hadnât been fast enough to outrun Pekka Rollinsâ goons. Everytime you made a run from the Sweet Shop, they dragged you right back, kicking and screaming the whole way.Â
âNo.â Kaz sighs. Drags a hand through his hair, tugging at the dark locks. âI wanted you-â
Kaz doesnât finish that thought.Â
A violent CRASH! steals your attention. Both of your heads snap toward the closed door, listening intently for any sign of danger.
Instead, you hear Jesperâs boisterous cackle chime. Wylan starts shouting about something indiscernibleâvase, shattered, and moron among the words you catch.
A smile sneaks up on you.Â
But, when you turn back to Kaz, itâs promptly wiped away.Â
He looks like heâs had a lemon rind forced into his mouth, scowling at the door. âWhatâs going on with you and Van Eck?âÂ
You blink. âWhat?âÂ
âYou heard me.âÂ
You didâbut hearing him is a far stretch from understanding him, and itâs seemed like Kaz has been talking in circles since you came in. Whatâs Wylan have to do with any of this?Â
âI donât get what youâre asking.âÂ
âStop making me repeat myself.âÂ
âThen stop being so confusing, Brekker!â you huff, crossing your arms. âI donât understand-â
Kaz cuts you off with a look. Cold as death, he grinds out, âAre you fucking him?âÂ
Shock. Confusion.Â
They course through you in equal measure, coupled with slight amusement. The latter must show on your face, because Kazâs scowl deepens before he looks down at his desk, pretending to fiddle with something.Â
âI have work to do,â he says stiffly. âGo downstairs.âÂ
Your feet stay firmly planted, the deskâs width all that separates the two of you. âWhy would you think that?âÂ
Of all the assholes and degenerates in the Dregs, Wylanâs probably the closest you have to a real friend. It came with the territoryâboth of you having become newbies around the same time, trying to learn the ropes and fit in.Â
Youâre not fucking him, though.Â
Kaz sinks back into his chair. His usually-squared shoulders curve slightly, as if some weight is pressing down on them. âGo downstairs.âÂ
âI thought you didnât like repeating yourself?â you ask, almost taunting.Â
âGo.â The word strains between his teeth. âNow.âÂ
For no good reason, you make a stand. Stare down the barrel of the gun, unafraid and unrelenting. How strange, you think. The tightness in your chest has never once been apprehension.Â
It was excitement. Anticipation.Â
Youâve always liked getting under his skin. Finding out what makes him tick, figuring out which words earn the sharpest glares. You want him to pull the trigger, if only because it means you have his attentionâand like a dog waiting at its masterâs feet, you could care less if it comes with an open hand or a closed fist.Â
So long as it comes. So long as he notices you.Â
âWhat did you say when I came in?â You uncross your arms, make yourself stand up tall. âTell me.âÂ
Dark eyes shoot up. Kaz almost looks shocked, the dull echo of emotion creasing the lines of his face, parting his lips. You wait, but no sound comes out.Â
Dirtyhands is used to giving orders. Not taking them.Â
âYouâve heard what they say about me.â You wave a dismissive hand toward the shoddy window overlooking the Barrel. âBrekkerâs Pet. Always with you, always following you around! Ask any sod in Ketterdam and theyâll say the sameâthe only way Iâd have time to fuck someone is if you were in the room!â And even then, it wouldnât be Wylan.Â
A steel rod takes the place of Kazâs spine, turning your words over in his head. âFine. Maybe you havenât,â he relents. âBut you want to.âÂ
Itâs a gamble. An unusually shitty one, at that.Â
You blow out an exasperated breath. This whole thing is getting old. âSaints, Kaz. Whatâs your deal?âÂ
He opens his mouth. Shuts it. Then opens it again.Â
âI saw you downstairs,â he says. âTouching Van Eck.âÂ
Your brows lift, fists clenching. You donât know what you expected from him, but it certainly hadnât been a bold-faced lie!Â
But then you start thinking of the moments before you saw Kaz head upstairs, laughing and playing Blackjack before you folded your hand to follow after him. Youâd been sitting cross-legged on the threadbare rug, wedged between Wylan and Raske, when you noticedâShit.Â
Kaz is right, and that makes you want to scream. Why is Kaz always right?Â
It was after you noticed Jesper was cheating, that heâd poorly marked the deck with daub; a sticky, ash-colored substance. Youâd leaned in close to point it out to Wylanâyour hand against his forearm, your lips dangerously close to the Merchlingâs ear. After he noticed the marks, you both exchanged quiet giggles over just how bad Jesper was at swindling.Â
Still, there had been nothing sexual about it. Nothing between you and Wylan.Â
But, even if there was, why would Kaz care?Â
I saw youâtouching Van Eck. His words race through your mind, pulsing in time with the dull ache in your temple. Touch me, touch me, touch me.Â
All of a sudden, the fog begins to clear. Something in your memory clicks.Â
That night behind the brothelsâwhen you were running from the Sweet Shop, when Kaz had been drenched in the blood of some Razorgull. Barefoot and frantic, you really had almost knocked him off his feet. Gloved hands had held your arms tight, keeping you still. His hair had been messy and your mind a blurâand when youâd seen the crimson smeared across his cheek, you hadnât thought twice before wiping it away.Â
Youâd done what so few have. You had touched Kaz Brekker, skin-on-skin.Â
Because you didnât make me sick.Â
When you donât speak, Kaz shifts in his chair. Straightens an already-neat stacks of papers. âYou wonât try and deny it?â he asks.Â
Maybe you imagine the quaver in his voice. Or maybe you donât.Â
Either way, you start around his desk. Your every step is slowâcautious.Â
You stop beside him, and Kaz shifts again. Youâre standing closer than youâd usually dare to get, so close that you can hear it when he swallows.Â
âYou should go downstairs,â he tells you, lower than before.Â
Your head tilts, hair shifting over one shoulder. âIs that what you want?âÂ
His answer hides in silence so thick itâs a tangible presence. It curls around you, makes gooseflesh prickle along your skin. Your mouth feels dry, your stomach like itâs tied in knots.Â
Suddenly, you donât need him to repeat what heâd said.Â
As always, Kaz was rightâyou'd heard him the first time.Â
âAsk me again.â The words drip from your tongue, an order and a plea. âAsk me and Iâll do it.âÂ
Kaz gives you a look, one youâve never seen before. Dark eyes rove over you, brimming with worry and stress andâand Saints, a sense of desire so strong it makes your toes curl in your boots, a feeling like lightning coursing up your spine.Â
In a voice like stone on stone, raspy and urgent, Kaz breathes out, âTouch me.âÂ
So you do.Â
You cup his face, graze your thumb over his cheekbone. Kaz stiffens, swallowing once moreâbut he doesnât flinch. Doesnât try to pull away.Â
âYou know, to be such a bastard,â you start, a note of teasing in your voice, âyouâre awfully pretty, Brekker.âÂ
Heat blooms against your palm, a deep blush crawling over his pale cheeks.Â
âShut up,â Kaz grumbles.Â
You grin. âWant me to go downstairs?âÂ
A gasp rips from your throat as a gloved hand clamps around your wrist, Kaz pulling you down toward him. Anxiety still tightens his features, but beneath it he looks all too pleased with himself when you stumble clumsily into his lap.Â
For the sake of comfort, you adjust your legsâcareful for his bad oneâand settle your arms over his shoulders. Then, when it fully settles that youâre straddling Kaz-fucking-Brekker, it gets a lot harder to breathe.Â
âShould I take that as a no?â It sounds like a pant, your lungs constricting.Â
He lifts the hem of your shirt, the feel of leather cool against your skin as Kaz jabs a finger into your side. âDo I always have to repeat myself around you?â he asks. Dark eyes dip past your jaw, his tongue gliding over his lips. You donât think he actually cares to hear your answer, which is goodâbecause youâre pretty sure you just forgot how to speak.Â
Kaz drags his finger up the curve of your waist, his touch tentative and featherlight. It feels a lot like being studiedâthe way his dark brows knit together, staring at you as if youâre a magic trick heâs yet to master, a puzzle he hasnât quite figured out.Â
âItâs not because youâre fast,â he says, somewhat distracted. It takes a minute for you to realize that heâs referring to your earlier questionâIs that why you wanted me for the Dregs, then?Â
âGood,â you manage. âBecause Iâm not.âÂ
The slightest twitch of a smile. âNo.â He takes his time tracing over every divet in your ribs, slowly trailing up, up, up. âYouâre not.âÂ
âBut I didnât make you sick.â Youâre not prepared for the wave of sickness that comes with the reminder, stomach roiling.Â
The Bastardâs Pet. Is that truly all you are? All youâre worth to the Dregs? Useless at saddling up next to sleazy merchants, but good enough to curl up at Kaz Brekkerâs feet.Â
As if he can read your mind, Kazâs hand goes still against your side. âWipe that sour look off your face, would you? If I only wanted you to touch me, I wouldâve just come to the Sweet Shop instead of getting my ass chewed by Haskell.â
You wiggle just enough to knock one knee into his hip, glaring at him. Both of you pretend not to notice the catch in his breathâor the growing hardness straining against his trousers, pressed against your core.Â
Gruff, Kaz continues, âYou were in an alley and saw a man dripping with blood, and your first thought was to reach out and clean his cheek.â His head shakes, a strand of coal-black hair swaying near his temple. âIt was ignorant,â he tells you. âAnd⊠decent. Innocent.âÂ
You almost laugh. Innocent. Thatâs hardly a word youâd use to describe yourself. Especially right now, your every muscle straining in an attempt to keep your hips perfectly still, hands folded at the base of his neck.Â
âI didnât know innocence like that could survive in the Barrel.â His hand starts again, tracing little shapes against your side. âEven if you never touched me again, I wasnât gonna let Pekka Rollinâs crush someone like you between his grimy little fingers.âÂ
âSo thatâs the answer?â you ask, nibbling on your lip. âIâm in the Dregs cause Iâm innocent?â What a reason to have someone join a gang. Hey, you seem pure! Wanna get corrupted?Â
âYouâre in the Dregs because you know how to persevere,â Kaz answers, holding your gaze. âHow to get up and try again, no matter how many times youâre knocked down.â The sensation of smooth leather drifts higher. âBecause youâre a survivor.â Your eyelids flutter, sucking in a breath as he palms the plump curve of your breast. âBecause youâre loyal,â he starts, and itâs almost reverent the way he almost whispers, âmy perfect little pet.âÂ
The world grinds to a halt.Â
Outside of this roomâthis momentânothing exists.Â
Too quiet, you ask, âWhat do you want from me, Kaz?âÂ
You want him to feel in control, to be the one that decides how this is gonna go. But your self-restraint is a fraying cord, mere seconds from snapping in half.Â
If it were up to you, how far would you go? How much of Kaz Brekker would you explore? As far as I could, you think, desperate. As much as heâd let me.Â
Thatâs the trouble with dogs. Theyâre loyal and clingy, forgiving and insistent. They want for everything and take whatever theyâre given. Theyâll spend hours begging at your feet. Lick scraps from the floor until their tongues begin to bleed.Â
When it comes to Kaz Brekker, youâll take whatever he has to give.Â
And youâll never stop begging for more, more, more.Â
âEverything.â His breath is warm against your lips, the leather cool on your breast. âI want everything.â

The Confrontation
Pairing - Kaz Brekker x reader!
Summary - three times where the Crows find you two in suspicious situations leading them to conspire and the fourth time when they learn the truth.
Warnings - Assault, Harrassment
1. Nina
"You ready?" Nina Zenik questioned, quickly giving the surroundings a scan before pinning her eyes on you. "The minute Kaz joins us, you have to leave".
You exhaled and nodded, trying your best not to wince at the obnoxiously tight corset and trying to breathe properly. "Was this the only available option?"
"Thr most suitable option," she corrected and smirked after looking at you.
"Stop checking me out when I'm literally struggling to breathe, Zenik. Remind me why is it not you instead of me? Saints know you're better at this," you grumbled and shivered as the cold hair brushed against your off shoulder gown.
"Because unfortunately I'm the Heartrender here, aren't I?" She grinned and you glared, understanding that this was quite amusing. "Ah! There's your ticket," she nodded towards Kaz who was stumbling his way towards you, slightly out of breath.
"Here it goes," you sighed, smoothing your outfit. Somehow this simply seemed a much difficult job that gutting someone in the right place. Using a knife was just easier.
Kaz, now much closer gave you a nod, his eyes glinting as he gripped his cane tightly and you understood. You merely smiled softly before shooting Nina a wink and entered the club, your eyes immediately narrowing down on the target.
Your brain was replaying all of the tricks that your dear friend had so graciously shown. You weren't dumb of course, you knew the basics but she had a degree in flirting.
And so you braced yourself and appeared in front of the man, trying to hide a cringe when his gaze instantly swept over your physique shamelessly. A small flame of anger burned internally and you would be sure to use your favorite dagger very soon.
Meanwhile Kaz and Nina were sneakily observing from the window while also keeping an eye on the environment.
"She seems to be getting the required information," Nina exclaimed but her smile soon fell upon seeing the scene. "Oh Saints no," she whispered and Kaz, who had his back to the window whipped around.
His dark, dangerous stare found you with ease and his body tensed at your uncomfortable face that you were trying so desperately to hide.
He saw the way that man pulled you closer with every passing second until you were pressed flat against him, his foul breath staining your bare shoulders as your body shook with contained fury.
His fingers skimmed your skin while his lips brushed against your cheek and all Kaz wanted to do in that moment was to stride inside and take you out of his grasp.
But he was still talking, his lips moved and so did yours. You were still trying to wrangle every little piece of information you could possibly get while also trying to keep yourself safe.
"Kaz," Nina said urgently upon seeing the malicious smile on the stranger's face. "That's enough she needs to come out".
"I can't do anything," he said bitterly. "It'll just give out our position and put everybody in danger and I cannot have that," he finished, hating every part of himself.
"I like you, sweetheart," your target whispered, his face inches away. His breath fanning you, reeking of alcohol. "I wish to see you again. Please?" He asked, his voice manipulative and he dragged his lips from your shoulder to your neck.
"Of course," you murmured back, your tone deadly which he didn't seem to notice. "You'll see me soon. Very soon indeed".
"Perfect," he grinned against your cheek before kissing the skin and you stepped back with a smile, not breaking eye contact until you exited the door.
And immediately your flirty facade shattered and your were consumed by a dark energy as you rounded the corner, your pace increasing with every step.
"Oh Saints," Nina said as soon as you reached the meeting spot. "Are you alright?"
"Of course I am," you teased, a wicked smile but Kaz wasn't fooled, not at all.
He looked at you, trying to pick up every noticeable change and he sae many. The twitch of your eyebrow, the small frown appearing on your lips which was quickly replaced with a grin and the slight shudder of your shoulders.
He didn't think of anything at all as he removed his coat. "Here," he offered, his dark brown eyes burning into yours.
"It's okay, Kaz, I'm alright-"
"-Take it," he said firmly and when you didn't move, he put it over your shoulders and you almost sighed at the warmth. His touch was so gentle, so secure, a constrast to the emotions plaguing you moments before. "Are you okay?" He asked again.
"I want to go home," was all you could reply as you looked longingly at him, hoping that your eyes were enough to convey all of your feelings. "Please".
Kaz nodded, looking down as pain struck his chest. He could handle numerous difficult situations, but when it concerned you, he was always vulnerable.
"I'm sorry," he said lowly, his voice barely heard as he scanned your face, having an intense urge to place his palm on your cheek but the mere thought made him flinch. However he remained rooted to the spot, not backing away because he knew that you needed him at the present, and he wasn't leaving you.
Someone cleared her throat and that was what made him pull away.
"Extremely sorry but we have to move," she said softly and he nodded, his jaw clenching as he gave you one last, tender look before walking away.
The two of you followed and you clutched the coat around you tightly, a small smile threatening to break out on your face as you replayed the interaction with your dearest.
Meanwhile the Grisha was observing her friends quite eagerly, her eyes switching from one to the other. She had her suspicions from the minute she saw Kaz's panic-stricken face, and then the said person lending his coat confirmed it.
She saw his face contorting in sadness upon seeing your highly uneasy figure back at the club, saw the way his fingers fidgeted constantly because he felt helpless. In conclusion, she saw him lose control.
Kaz Brekker never lost control.
She should feel guilty for using her abilities on her boss, but how could she not? When a particular heart was thudding unbelievably as soon as his eyes fell onto someone else's. The beating had only seemed to intensify when he had put his coat around your shoulders.
The trip to the Crow Club was spent in silence. Everyone's mind being occupied by very different thoughts.
"There you are!" Jesper's cheery voice snapped them from their daydream. He slowly jogged over to you, excitement evident on his features. "Want to play a round of cards?"
All you gave him was a small, forced smile. He just looked so happy and you didn't want to be that person, "Let's go then".
"You don't have to," Kaz suddenly spoke making everyone stare in surprise.
"It's fine," you replied but he still gave you that look. The one where his eyes were just a tiny bit wide, eyebrows slightly raised to wordlessly ask if you were sure.
You nodded offering him a twitch of your lips before joining Jesper, Wylan and Inej at the table, helping yourself to some bread.
Nina had of course watched this soundless interaction quite seriously, and now she had some very interesting points that would definitely be shared with the other Crows; minus you two obviously.
"Now this seems fun," she said to herself, smirking at the way Dirtyhands had his eyes glued to you the entire time.
===============================
2. Wylan & Matthias
Having a lazy day at the barrel was something that happened once in a blue moon, because Mr Brekker made sure to always keep everyone on their toes. Today was one of those rarest days that the Crows actually had no job and so naturally they were lazing around in the club.
Jesper and Nina were gossiping, holding a small muffin in their hands as they whispered amongst themselves, probably sharing the headlines of all that had happened in the Barrel.
"You're sure? Our Kaz? Kaz Brekker losing control like that?" Jesper asked, double checking to make sure they were talking about the same person.
"Yes Jesper!" Nina sighed. "His heartbeat seemed to skyrocket the minute his eyes fell on her. I wss actually worried that he might have a cardiac arrest or something.
"Djel help me," Matthias muttered. "She's too good for him to ever say yes".
"Oh come on," Nina insisted, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "They're made for each other!"
"I don't know about that but they do make quite a pair," Inej added, her face screwed up in concentration.
"There's definitely something going on," Wylan whispered, putting on his scheming face as he analysed his thoughts.
Meanwhile Nina was now feeding another round of conversation to her gossip partner who was enjoying it very much indeed.
"No way he went over to the Dime Lions!" Jesper exclaimed mid-bite, his mouth opening as he registered the statement.
"He did indeed Jes," you walked down the stairs interrupting their conversation. "Rumour had it that he was paid handsomely as well".
"Of course he was," the gunslinger snorted before shaking his head.
"Where were you?" Nina asked, her eyebrow raised in question and all four heads turned to hear your answer.
"Kaz's office," you said and sat down on one of the couch, not noticing the small smirks painted on everybody's faces.
"What's he doing in there anyway?" Inej asked, having sharpened her knives and taking yours making you shoot her a highly grateful look.
But before you could reply, the said person called from from above, "Love! Have you seen that Kerch document that I had shown you? Where did you keep it?"
Silence. Complete and utter silence followed his statement as the Crows glanced at each other, their expressions the epitome of flabbergasted.
"Check in your bottom right drawer!" You shouted unaware, standing right below the floor so your voice could be heard better. "I've kept it along with other related files".
The minute you went back to your previous seat, you felt eyes staring at every inch of your face making you suddenly look up. "What the hell?" You asked, being startled at seeing every gaze pinned towards you.
"Did he just-" Jesper began but Wylan elbowed him harshly.
"Nothing," he answered sweetly, ignoring the sharp glare thrown his way. "How about we go visit the marketplace? You said you'd show me some firing powders".
"Yeah let's go," you nodded, putting your gun in the holster and donning a black leather jacket over your shirt. "Anybody need anything? I'm not going to get you fruit loops, Jesper," you narrowed your eyes before the boy could even utter a word.
"But you told me that-"
"But you also happened to have eaten three packets yesterday. So no. Absolutely not".
Inej and Nina snickered at the banter which was surely an everyday occurence. Jesper always being the hopeless little kid and you unintentionally acting like his older sister.
The said boy was looking at you with wide eyes and a small pout and you groaned in exasperation. "Fine! I'll get you some stop looking at me like that!"
"I love you so much," he grinned and shot a wink your way.
"Whom do you love?" Kaz Brekker asked, walking down the stairs and towards him with a raised eyebrow. Everybody fell silent at his impeccable timing to arive during the most unwelcoming moments.
"Her of course!" Nina butted in, pointing towards you before Jesper could reply and Matthiss noticed the way the Demjin's face contorted and tightened.
Kaz shot the Zemeni a small glare, not knowing himself that he was actually doing it before turning to look at you and all of the other crows saw the way his gaze softened considerably.
"Should we leave then?" Wylan broke the silence and tugged at your sleeve and your attention snapped to him.
"Yes yes let's leave," you followed him, almost at the door when Kaz called your name and you halted. "What's wrong? You need anything?" You questioned softly as he walked closer.
"You forgot this," he merely said and handed you a necklace that you had forgotten on his desk. It was only Wylan who actually saw the pendant and his mouth hung open.
You took it from his hands, fingers gently brushing against his gloved ones and he instantly felt a small amount of warmth seep into his very soul.
You lit a spark with only your touch.
You ignited him.
"Thank you," you smiled and quickly clasped it around your neck, tucking it inside your shirt so it would be hidden from privy eyes. "See you later, yeah?"
He nodded, hands tightening on his cane as he watched you leave. He never got round to telling you that he had wanted to spend this day with you and you only. But unfortunately you had plans and so he remained silent. Not wanting to be a hindrance.
He couldn't even remember the last time he had spent some quality time with you. Being too busy finding new deals and searching for missions that he couldn't properly acknowledge the best thing in his life.
When did he last take you out somewhere except for sneaking around to gather valuable information? You loved having hot chocolate late at night, when had he ever bought it for you despite knowing that the drink was your favorite?
You deserved so much better, his mind kept telling him. He couldn't even bring himself to give you the comforting touches that he knew you longed for. You never said a word but he saw it in your eyes. Whenever a plan had gone too complicated and particularly difficult, all you needed was a good embrace. But he could only ever bring himself to hold your hand. Nothing more.
And he hated himself for it. Despised every inch of his self because of his inability to provide for you. It killed him inside.
You were lovely and brave and better than anything he deserved. And he was twisted, crooked, wrong but not so broken that he couldn't pull himself together into some semblance of a man for you.
He was so lost in his thoughts that his sharp instincts failed to notice the stares that were currently burning holes in his face. "What?" He snapped and was on his way back to his bedroom when they stopped him.
"Goodness Kaz you actually look sad," Nina concluded, fighting the smirk that was quick to spread on her face.
"I have no reason to be upset," he rolled his eyes and started climbing the stairs slowly, his leg throbbing with slight pain.
"Wylan's right," Matthias said lowly. "The demjin is infatuated".
Wylan on the other hand was busy geeking over the chemicals that were presented in front of him. "How did I never know about this!" He said in delight and you chucklef at the way his eyes lighted up. "These are so much cheaper too".
"Get whatever you want," you squeezed his shoulder and he nearly jumped in excitement. "I'll just quickly go and get something from that shop, yeah?"
He nodded and you crossed the street to enter the clothing shop, smiling to yourself upon seeing beautiful coats lining the walls.
"Can I see some black shirts and vests, please?" You requested the man who nodded and placed numerous boxes on the table. "I'll take these three," you smiled, selecting two dark grey shirts and a gorgeous black vest that you knew would suit your man well.
"Oh hey! Didn't see you coming in".
Wylan simply laughed and examined the clothes that were being folded neatly and transferred in a bag. "For you?"
"Oh no," you shook your head and paid the kruge, it was a little expensive but it's fine. You could give him a gift every now and then. "It's for Kaz".
His eyes widened in surprise just a tiny bit and his lips stretched wide as the two of you exited the store. But then he suddenly grabbed your hand and pulled you towards an artefacts shop.
"How would this look on Jesper?" He said and pointed at a hat which was exactly what the gunslinger preferred.
"Absolutely perfect".
"Hey take a look at this," he directed your attention towards a few bracelets kept neatly in a box, making sure to keep his trained on you to pick up on every little change.
Your hand instinctively flew towards a handmade one woven with black thread. It was quite simple but had an intricate design. You loved it immediately and wasted no time in purchasing the little present.
"Let's go?" You asked, almost forgetting for a moment that you weren't alone. While the boy had his arms crossed and a knowing smile on his face as he followed your lead. Having an intense conversation with himself in his head.
It was almost night when you entered the Slat again and two of the Crows were lounging in the basement itself with the exception of Inej and Nina.
"I'll be back in a few," you whispered to Matthias who nodded and you climbed up thr stairs, eagerly wanting to give Kaz the gifts you had brought.
He waited until the sound of a door closing was heard before looking at Wylan who had a cheeky grin on his face.

3. Inej & Jesper
"Look at his hand!" Matthias whispered under his breath and nudged Wylan whose eyes shot towards Kaz Brekker. And indeed, a black bracelet was clasped onto his left wrist. Not that noticeable but nowadays nothing could ever escape their sharp stare.
"I've never ever seen him wear anything synonymous to jewellery," Matthias muttered and passed the message to Nina who perked up with a bright grin, as though struck by an inspiration.
"Watch me," was all she said and the the two boys glanced ahead in apprehension as she neared your location and bumped into you quite harshly.
"Saints!" A small shout escaped your lips as you were thrown backwards onto Kaz who was right behind you.
"Goodness I'm so sorry," Nina immediately apologised, not being sorry in the least as she rather scanned the couple's reaction.
Your back was pressed against Kaz's chest while his gloved hand, the one wearing a bracelet was wrapped securely around your waist, holding you against him. You placed your palm on top of his in reassurance, and your heart started taking up its pace.
"You okay?" He murmured in your ear and helped you stand up straight as you nodded; and he shot a deathly glare towards the heartrender, who gave a grin and sashayed her way back to the boys.
"I'm fine, thank you for that," you whispered before returning to the documents that were scattered on the table.
"You saw that?" She joined the duo with an excited expression, her hands flapping in front of her. "He didn't even flinch at her touch! It was almost like-"
"Like he's used to it!" Wylan completed her sentence and she nodded enthusiastically.
"Usually he'll push the person off for even invading his personal space, much less someone actually falling on him," Matthias added and she agreed.
"Ghezen this is going much better than I expected. Fifty kruge that they're already together since the past few months".
"Oh yeah?" Jesper interrupted the conversation with the biggest smirk on his face as he sat down, joined by Inej who was shaking her head with a smile. "Hundred kruge says that they've been married already".
"You do know that you're horrible at betting, don't you?" Matthias asked, raising an eyebrow at the large sum.
"But I think Jes is right on this one," Inej supported him making the said person's grin widen if that was even possible.
"What's making you so sure?" Wylan asked, quite suspiciously.
"Let me ah- tell you a little something I saw," his brown eyes glinted as he recounted the miracle that he and Inej had seen.
Jesper was walking on his usual route that led him back to the Crow Club with the Wraith beside him. They had both finished their parts of the job and had met on their way home.
"You got some intel?" He asked, his eyes scanning the various treats that were covering the shelves of stalls.
"Nothing," she answered with a sigh. "It is the same. He comes in everyday sharp at 7 in the morning and leaves exactly at 5. There has been no change at all".
"I think I'm going insane," he suddenly whispered and stopped dead in his tracks making Inej tense up immediately as she looked around for any threat.
"What's wrong?"
"That- That's Kaz isn't it?" He questioned, unable to believe the words that were on their way through his mouth. "In a- a goddamn flower shop?"
"Don't be ridiculous," she scoffed lightly but her she too froze upon seeing a familiar figure standing merely a few metres away. "Saints that is Kaz!"
"Let's go," he nudged her and she hesitated, not really wanting to pry but curiosity certainly gets the better of everyone. They walked closer silently, hiding behind another store which gave them the perfect view.
And there he was, the bastard of the barrel holding a beautiful, red rose in his bare fingers. Yes, he did not have his gloves on. Something that was noticed by the two.
They saw as he paid the small amount of money and began trodding down the road, his cane held tightly in one hand and the rose was held in the other that was hidden behind his back.
"Breadcrumbs," Jesper smirked at her and she let out a laugh as the two followed their leader, becoming increasingly suspicious. They didn't have to wait for long as the person that they had expected arrived soon enough making the two Crows grin.
"Nina was right after all," Inej muttered as she watched you waving at Kaz to gain his attention and the spying people stepped closer, wanting to hear the conversation that would surely grant them something.
"Hey," they heard you whisper, sounding slightly breathless.
"Hi," Kaz replied and took a tiny step closer so that his shoes were touching yours making you bite your lip. "This is for you," he added and presented the rose, his eyes hungrily scanning yours for every little change that he itched to see.
And you rewarded him with the grin that he oh so loved. When your mouth fell open slightly in surprise before morphing slowly into a gorgeous and breathtaking smile.
"For me?" You asked despite yourself, gently taking the flower from his hand and twirling it in your fingers. "Are you sure?"
A small frown marked his face, "Of course I am. Why do you ask such a thing?"
"Is it not for someone else? Maybe a pretty girl that you're thinking of wooing to help you get whatever information that you need," you teased, your lips pressed together.
"Darling," was all he said. His voice low, deep as he stared intently into your eyes, tilting his head to look even deeper. "There is no one like you," he finished and let a small smile form on his hardened face.
Jesper who had been listening with every ounce of concentration had to slap his palm over his mouth to prevent a squeal from escaping his feeble clutches. It was only for Inej roughly smacking his arm and dragging him away that he managed to not give away their position.
"Hence proved," he concluded his story with his arms extended to the present crowd who were utterly and completely shocked.
"No way that actually happened," Matthias grumbled, muttering to himself while Nina looked like she'd just received all of the available waffles for free.
"I'm a genius," she laughed heartily and chugged down a shot of whiskey in celebration of her matchmaking skills.
"I'm so going to win that bet, Zenik".
"Don't count your pigeons before they're killed, Fahey. We can't be so sure that they're actually married".
"We have to ask them!" Wylan urged, sitting up straight and looking at them for their opinions.
"We will," Nina nodded firmly while the rest appeared unconvinced. "Tomorrow".
"Let's hope that we're not murdered in our beds later that night then," Jesper sighed but he too couldn't contain his excitement.

4. The Confrontation
"Kaz," Nina said in delight as soon as the man climbed down the last step.
"Never thought I'd live to see the day when you're actually looking happy to see me," he retorted making her roll her eyes.
"We need to talk," Jesper elaborated making him raise an eyebrow as he took in all of his Crows minus you and Inej sitting with their arms crossed and heads held high.
"Does it concern me?"
"Of course it does that's why we're asking!"
"Saints give me the strength," he muttered under his breath before looking at the lot. "Go on then I don't have all day".
That's when Inej entered the scene, dragging you along with her and making you stand next to Kaz. "What's going on?" You questioned, heavily confused and looking around for an answer.
"We need to ask you something," Wylan answered your request.
"I gathered just as much".
"Are you going to ask or not?" Kaz growled in annoyance, his patience running thin.
"We just wanted to know-"
"I've been wanting to ask-"
"We had a feeling that-"
They all began together but not one could complete their sentence until Jesper was the one to blurt it out.
"You're married?"
Kaz and you stood still, dumbstruck before visibly relaxing and you chuckled, "That was quicker than I expected".
"I don't think four years is quick, love," Kaz responded, his lips stretching just the slightest making the crowd explode.
"FOUR YEARS?!"
"YOU TWO ARE ACTUALLY MARRIED!"
"WHEN DID YOU EVEN START DATING?!"
"HOW ON EARTH DID YOU EVEN MANAGE TO PULL HER OUT OF ALL THE PEOPLE??"
"Ask him about it," was all you said and sat down on a chair with a very obvious smile adorning your pleased face. Everybody fell silent at once and you knew you had said the right thing. Nobody sensible would ever dare to question Kaz.
Jesper glanced nervously at him, "Can I atleast see your ring? Just to you know, have some confirmation?"
You laughed and pulled the necklace out from under your shirt, revealing a thin but elegant silver band encrusted with a small diamond at its center.
"K- Kaz?" Wylan asked, or rather pleaded.
To their surprise, he took off the glove of his right hand to reveal a similar ring resting beautifully against his pale fingers.
"Saints I win!" Jesper said in disbelief and stood up straight, slowly turning his head to look at Nina. "GIVE ME MY KRUGE!" And all watched as the girl slowly backed away, probably hatching an escape plan and ran swiftly with him hot on her heels.
"That was something huh?" You grinned and looked at your husband, slowly leaning over to intertwine your fingers with his.
"Quite," he huffed lightly but couldn't stay annoyed for long and alas, he too smiled. Not a particularly big one, rather a small, gentle twitch of his lips. One that was only ever displayed for you.
His eyes held the entire universe as he admired you from the side, looking at you as if you had hung those few stars that formed his constellation.

ALWAYS BEEN YOU - KAZ BREKKER
//follow-up to this (for context, really) but can be standalone// also @darker0moon221b asked for this//
Pairing: kaz brekker x reader
Word Count: 3,146
Summary: On the heels of a rough night and unbelievable confessions, Y/N still has to make sure Kaz is alright. What comes after is⊠shocking.
âI loved you first.â
âWhat?â Your head snapped up and your hands around the kit tightened till your knuckles were white. âYou donât mean that.â You laughed nervously.
Kaz didnât waiver in his eye contact, dark eyes boring into yours. You shifted slightly under his gaze but he didnât speak. Even when you rose to your feet, he didnât look away, didnât say a word. He just watched you intently, like if he looked away you would vanish.
Those four seemingly simple words bounced around your skull. You tried to imagine what his expression was when he said them, but you couldnât. There was no way for you to know what he was thinking. That cursed unreadable expression crossed his features and you wouldâve given anything for any of his other looks. That near smile that only you seemed to get or even his widely recognized scheming face.
âI loved you first.â
You had imagined it, right? He gave you nothing to think otherwise. Yes, thatâs all it was. A tired brain mixing with a yearning heart to play on your own foolish infatuation. Kaz Brekker was many horrible things and few wonderful. But he was not someone who confessed love. Maybe he didnât know love. Maybe he didnât want to. Either way, it wasnât about you. That much you could convince yourself.
âOkay.â You said finally. You had no idea how much time had passed while your thoughts ran rampant. âWell, make sure you eat and drink something to help with the blood loss. Iâd say something with some sugar. Oh! Nina was by earlier, brought some new pie. You might like it.â
âY/N?â He tried but you pretended not to hear him.
âIâll come check on it in the morning, if thatâs alright. Make sure no infection has set in and you still have your wits.â
âThatâs all?â
âIs there anything else?â You cringed slightly at the desperation in your voice.
âYou tell me.â
You swallowed the thoughts that threatened to embarrass you further and simply nodded, lips pressed tightly to a line. You moved to grab your fallen book but once your eyes went down, Kaz seemed to know your intention. Of course he did. You immediately stopped when you saw his movements, the stretch of his long yet muscle bound bare limbs.
You also realized he was still shirtless.
You turned on your heel instead and briskly walked out the room. You made sure the door was firmly shut behind you and then you practically ran to your own room. You all but slammed the door and dropped your kit to your desk. You yanked off the remaining glove and pushed your hands into your hair. You let out an uneven breath and tried once more to piece together the night.
You were reading in Kazâs office. He came in, covered in blood. You cleaned him up and he smiled at you. He said he loved you.
You laughed slightly and then put a hand to your mouth.
âOh Saints, Iâve gone mad.â You said to yourself. You shook your head and decided to sleep it off.
But your dreams were simply replays of that damn smile.
The next morning, you dragged your feet to get ready. You brushed your hair and teeth, then washed your face leisurely. You knew Kaz was likely already waiting for your promised arrival and heâd have some comment locked and loaded, just itching for an opportunity, but that only made you want to avoid it more. But the deal was the deal.
You tucked a pair of gloves into your pocket and cut a new bandage wrap from your fabric pile before you headed to see him. You greeted the few Dregs that were up at the early hour before you hesitated outside his office.
You tugged on the collar of your shirt, just so you didnât pat your pocket, and shifted on your feet. You hated the fact that you were dreading something you were good at, simply because you had gotten something you had only dreamed of. And for what? Because you couldnât believe it? Because you decided to want something so simple from the one person it always seemed so improbable from?
Then again, improbability wasnât impossibility.
âWhy are we staring?â Jesper whispered loudly and you jumped. âItâs just a door.â
âHa ha.â You said sarcastically and jammed your elbow into his ribs. âAnd itâs not that Iâm staring. Iâm stalling, itâs different.â
âOkay⊠Why are you stalling? Meeting with the boss you donât wanna deal with?â
âOf a sort.â You nodded. âDo you thinkâŠâ
âWylan would say no but I beg to differ.â He shrugged and glanced over with a wide grin. âWhatâs on your mind?â
You nodded towards Kazâs door.
âWhatâd he do this time?â Jesper sighed and his smile fell.
âWhen heâs come back after having the ever-loving shit kicked out of him, have you ever heard him say anything strange?â You tried to keep it vague. Telling Jesper was just as bad as screaming it across the Barrel. You loved your friend but he was a gossip.
He gasped dramatically, thus confirming your hesitation. âIs there news?â
âMaybe⊠Iâm hopeful, donât get me wrong, but I also canât convince myself it happened.â
âWell, what was it?â
âSo you can tell all of Ketterdam and get us both in trouble?â You laughed. âNo way.â
âOh, come on!â He tried.
You shook your head with a smile and knocked on the office door. After a second, you could hear the tapping of his cane coming closer. You looked back at Jesper, who was still staring with wide, pleading puppy-dog eyes. The door cracked open so you shot your friend a wink and ducked inside.
âYou took your time.â Kaz complained once you shut the door.
âGood morning to you too.â You rolled your eyes, both glad and disappointed to be back to your usual banter. You turned and found him sitting in your chair, cane resting against the arm while he rubbed out his bad leg. âHow do you feel?â
He shrugged. You couldâve been mistaken, but he seemed more irritated than usual.
You made a face to yourself and crossed the room. You stopped a few inches from him, not even letting your shoes touch, and leaned in quietly. His eyes went wide for a moment and it almost seemed like he had a forward lean of his own. Your eyes were on the cut of his forehead, checking the length of it once then twice then a third time just for the hell of it.
But even with your focus on the injury, you could see the movement of his own eyes. Darting between yours, following the shape of your jaw, your lips, trailing down your neck.
âThat one looks good.â You leaned away and nodded. âYou didn't feel any sort of dizziness or sickness after I left?â
He seemed to lose himself in his thoughts before he answered you. You knelt in front of him, nudging his knees apart. The jostle seemed to bring him back to the moment, which caused a new flash of surprise. You wondered for a second if it meant something in your favor or if he was feeling some sort of after effect from the fight.
âKaz?â You tried waving a hand in front of his face. âIs something wrong?â
He reached out and took your hand in his. You said nothing, but your expression betrayed you. Kaz let out a small chuckle and let himself smile again, smaller than the one that threw you last night but still genuine. Your eyes were wide and soft in awe at the simple contact but coming on the heels of the confessions last night, it had to have some weight.
âNothingâs wrong.â He said quietly. âTruthfully, Y/N, I worried I had misunderstood you.â
âWhat?â Your brows furrowed.
âDo you remember what you said last night?â
You winced. âIn painful detail, yes.â
He chuckled again and you lost the fight to hide a smile. âI thought about it all night.â
âReally?â
âI wondered if I had misheard you, if I had misread your cues.â
âHang on.â You cut in, snapping into focus as if you had been hit with cold water. âCues? I wasnât giving cues.â
âReally?â He challenged lightly. âShould I list them?â
âPlease do, but while you try and embarrass me, unbutton your shirt so I can check your side.â
âThose wide eyes that always find me in a room.â He pointed to your eyes before taking off his gloves to work the buttons. âYou ask something specific of me then change it to mean everyone. The way you curl up in this chair and face my desk, pretending to read but youâre looking over your book towards me. Hell, even the way you say my name.â
âThatâs⊠a good list.â You said carefully, admittedly embarrassed. You dropped your eyes and pulled the gloves from your pocket.Â
âDo you want to know what really convinced me?â
âNot particularly but Iâm sure youâll tell me anyway.â You confessed with a sigh. Once your gloves were fitted to your hands, you leaned an elbow on his knee and looked back at him.
He leaned in as if to tell you a secret, though it was likely just to free some space while he wriggled out of his shirt sleeves. You wanted to lean in and meet him, finally kiss him, but you knew better. Instead, you forced your eyes to stay on his side. You tried not to let your gaze wander across his muscle-bound, scar-riddled torso.
Focus, Y/N.
You shifted to sit up on your knees and reached in. Your rubber covered fingers met his skin carefully and you gently prodded and pulled on the injury.
âNothing to say anymore?â You asked lightly, hoping to break the now thick tension.
You dared a glance at his face and his eyes were closed, head leaning against the back of the chair. Your movements froze as you simply looked at him. He almost looked content, so much softer when his eyes were closed. It was small moments like that that made you forget he was the Bastard of the Barrel, Dirtyhands Brekker. He was someone to be feared. Men with any sense wouldnât dare to cross him. Women with any sense swooned and batted their lashes for his attention. Kids with any sense feared their closets because the monsters come from there.
But to you, especially in those fleeting vulnerable instances, he was just Kaz. And that was always enough for you.
You shook the thought and went back to your examination. You ran your fingers over the length of the wound and frowned when you realized one of the stitches were looser than it shouldâve been.
âWere you messing with these last night?â You accused quickly.
âWhat?â He finally spoke. âNo.â
âDammit.â You cursed and pulled your hands away. You dropped to sit on your heels and blew a sigh while you threw the gloves on the floor in annoyance. âItâs not as tight as Iâd like it to be. Mustâve been the gloves.â
âDo you need to fix it?â
You looked over at the discarded gloves and frowned. âMore practice is what I need.â You muttered before looking back at Kaz. âIt should be okay. Itâs clean so as long as you keep it covered, it wonât bleed through your clothes or anything⊠But itâll scar for sure now.â
He shrugged. âWhatâs one more?â
âYou never told me what tipped you off.â You said, looping back to the prior conversation.
You knew you shouldâve left, let the unspoken thing between you two stay unspoken, but you also knew you needed closure. You needed to know with certainty if your pining was obvious. If you needed to pack up and run from your embarrassment. Maybe Inej would let you join her crew next time she came to port.
He held his hand out to you and you went for it, then hesitated. You kept your hand just out of his reach before closing your fingers to create just a bit more space. The idea of putting your hand in his - his bare hand - was something you had only dreamed about. You heard him make a noise of impatience at your hesitation and he leaned forward again to take your hand in his.
âYouâre always careful of my space.â He began carefully. It was a list he knew, something he had drafted and gone over a million times in the past few weeks. Or maybe it was months. It couldâve been years for all Kaz could tell. Everything with you seemed to come together in the best and worst ways. âYouâre careful of contact.â
âBecause I know you donât like it.â You shrugged. âDoesnât everyone seem to avoid you for one reason or another?â
âWell, yes, but you do it to be considerate not because youâre afraid.â
âI know you wouldnât hurt me.â
Kaz took a deep breath and his eyes finally met yours. You could see the war raging behind his eyes. The contact of your hand in his mustâve been driving him insane. You could see his chest rising and falling with deep breaths, like he had to consciously force the air in and out of his lungs. His jaw was tense. Hell, his whole body was wound tight as elastic, ready to snap. To shove you away, to scream at you, to start a fight neither of you would hold back in. But he didnât. He willed himself to maintain the contact, even when you gave the slightest tug to free your hand.
âNo.â He finally spoke. âNever you.â
âWhat areâŠâ You tried, but the question wouldnât form. What was he thinking? Why wasnât he letting go? Why was he tormenting himself just to hold your hand?
âWhen I felt your gloves last night, it all made sense.â He explained and the grip on your hand seemed to tighten slightly. âI knew I hadnât been crazy.â
âI might be.â You said mindlessly and he chuckled.
âWe both might be.â He agreed. âBut still⊠You didnât have to use gloves, but you did, because you wanted to be able to help me. Right?â
âSomeone has to.â You tried to sound casual.
âThey donât.â He corrected. âBut you want to.â
âBecause I care about you, Kaz. Youâve been my friend for years. Iâd hate to lose you.â
âDo you love me, Y/N? Truly.â
You swallowed hard, licking your lips to stall. Your free hand twitched and knowing your pockets were empty, you tugged on your shirt to adjust the fabric. Suddenly, the room felt very warm.
âIâŠâ You began slowly. âYouâre still holding my hand.â
âYes.â
âWithout your gloves.â
He let out a shuddering breath. âYes.â
âAnd that doesnât make you want to run?â
âIt does.â He answered tightly. âBut I donât want to run from you.â
âYou donât have to do this.â You put your other hand on his knee. âLet go, Kaz.â
âNo.â
âWhy are you doing this to yourself?â
âBecause how can I be with the woman I love if I cannot bring myself to touch her?â He answered quickly and your eyes went wide. âIf I cannot hold her hand or touch her face, her lips⊠If I cannot bring myself to hold her, what kind of love is that?â
âIf she truly loves you, sheâll bear it.â You offered.Â
âYou shouldnât have to.â
âMe?â
âYes.â His expression shifted slightly to relief. âYes, you, Y/N. Itâs always been you.â
âSo I didnât imagine it last night? You said you loved me first.â
âTruthfully, I was worried I had imagined it all. But I couldnât stop thinking about those damned gloves and how I wanted to feel your touch without them⊠Just be honest with me, Y/N. Do you want this?â
âOf course I do.â You said without thinking. âBut I canât ask you to torture yourself just to be with me.â
âYouâre always so gentle.â He spoke softly, admiringly even, and it made you blush. âYou donât have to be so with me. I can take it.â
âAnd you shouldnât have to.â You managed to wiggle your hand free and you watched his chest rise and fall with a heavy sigh of relief. âI do love you, Kaz, in a way that scares me. But I wonât be the reason you force yourself to do something you canât.â
You stood and reached for the book you left the night before.
âNo one forces me, Y/N.â He stood in front of, one small step to block your reach. âI want to do this for you.â
âDonât make me move you.â
âYou wouldnât push a cripple without his cane, would you?â He feigned innocence.
âIâm serious, Brekker. Let me get my book so I can go and you can think this through.â
âIâve spent weeks thinking it through.â He shook his head. âI want to try. For you, yes, but also myself⊠I want to hold you and kiss you and touch you for myself.â
âIf I give in and if Iâm with you.â You said firmly, pointing your finger near his face. âWe need to be very open about limits. I wonât push and I expect you to stop when you need to.â
âYes, maâam.â He saluted sarcastically and you had to refrain from kicking him in the shin. âAnything else?â
âYou need to give me your word, Kaz.â
âDonât trust me?â He raised a brow.
âI trust you with my life you buffoon.â You rolled your eyes with a small smile. âBut I need to know youâll commit yourself to what Iâm asking.â
âY/N, darling. I give you my word, on any and all Saints you want to invoke, that I will take that time I need so long as youâll let me.â
âGood.â You nodded. You thought if there was anything else you could or should have him agree to. Your mind was blank so you shoved your hands into your pockets. âI suppose that means weâre together now.â
He grinned and you couldnât help but smile in return.
âFinally.â He said and you could tell he was truly happy. âCan I kiss you?âHe took a step closer.
You freed a hand and gingerly brushed your fingers along his temple, sneaking into his hair for a second. He gasped but you noticed he didnât flinch. Feather-light, your touch went along the angle of his jaw and danced down his neck, curved with his shoulder, and skimmed his arm until you reached his hand. He interlaced his fingers with yours and you felt his other hand under your chin, tilting your head back.
âIf youâre sure you can bear it.â You said quietly.

âthe set-up; kaz brekker.
Ê kaz brekker x reader | grishaverse | 1,8k words. Ê from this request. | three times the crows plan to set you and kaz up + the one time they find out you're married. Ê fluff; the crows are featured (incl. wesper & helnik ship); kaz's touch aversion isn't featured. Ê a/n this has been sitting in the drafts for a bit. ive been suffering down the leon brainrot hole (honestly an excellent one to fall into). kaz calls reader schatje (i have a fic where he does this. i chose schatje because ketterdam is loosely inspired from 1500s-1700s amsterdam!). i wrote this in a goofy way honestly.
one. he smiles.
Wylan fiddles with jars and tubes filled with an assortment of chemicalsâsome of them tend to explode, all of them horrible smelling. He's supposed to be on guard duty and he prefers it over running around guns blazing alongside Jesperâas much as he loves the sharpshooter, gunshots give him a lot of anxiety.
He peers into the room where most of the work is happening.
You are poring over stacks of documents, eyes scanning quickly top-to-bottom to find relevant information. Kaz has his ear pressed against the front of a safe, gloved hand twisting the lock. You move around him in the cramped office space with relative ease, grabbing more files to read on the desk.
It doesn't take long for the safe to swing open.
âNo safe is safe from Kaz Brekker, the safe-cracker, huh?â you comment. A light, teasing smile decorates your lips.
âPlease never say that sentence again.â
To Wylan's surprise, the ever-frowning Dirtyhands smiles. Not the half-hearted hospitable smile he occasionally gives out, or the scary half-sneer half-smirk that is so intimidating it scares even Wylan sometimes. No, a genuine, amused smile. It is so unnatural that he has to look away, a hand clasped over his mouth in shock.
When he tells Jesper, the taller man mirrors his reaction, dark eyes blown wide and jaw unhinged.
âHe smiled?â Jesper gives an incredulous stare as if Wylan has just told him that he is a member of the Council of Tideâwhich is impossible with Wylan's lack of Grisha ability, let alone tidemaking. âHe smiled over that?â
Wylan nods enthusiastically.
âWe are talking about the same Kaz?â
âAre there any other Kaz that we know?â Wylan sighs.
âWell, noââ
âI think we have to proceed with the plan,â Wylan ponders. Jesper blinks widely.
âThe plan?â
âNina's plan!â Wylan looks at Jesper as if he's just gotten a strike of inspiration, hand in the air, pointing at nothing in particular. âOperation Kaz and ____. Remember?â
Jesper remembers. It was so ridiculous that it remains impossible to remove from his memory to this day, even though it was mentioned in passing.
Nina, flushed red from too many drinks, suddenly shoots her hand up, flailing it limply. The founder of the idea seems to have a plan ready to set in motion.
âWe are the gods of love!â She drunkenly declares, free hand moves to tap Wylan's cheeks repeatedly. âAnd as the benevolent gods that we are, our first mission is them.â
Nina pushes Wylan's face towards you and Kaz, sat at the bar, deep in conversation. The rest of the Crows followed suit, realising Nina's suggestion. She stumbles over drunkenly and with little-to-no care on making it look as natural or accidental as she can, "trips" over her foot and falls forward.
You take the brunt of the force, being pushed forward that you fall onto Kaz. The latter glares at Nina, hand coming to your shoulder to steady you.
âMy bad.... It seems I've lost my balance,â she slurs. âOh! Would you look at that? The two of you would make quite a pair, don't you think so, Matthias?â
Matthias raises an eyebrow, already hauling Nina with him to get back to their table.
âPoor Helvar,â says Kaz simply, nudging you to get back on the barstool.
âHe doesn't seem to mind,â you retort, noting Matthias' loving gaze as he escorts Nina.
It doesn't take long before the chaos settles, leaving you and Kaz, still engaging in conversation as the last patrons leave the Crow Club.
âWe would make a good pair, huh?â You tease, reaching over to brush your hand against his, leather soft under your palm. âYou think so?â
Kaz looks at you pointedly, tugging your left hand towards him, fingers pressing on the small diamond adorning your ring finger. âWould I have given you this, if I didn't?â
Smooth with his words without even trying. A trait you find both annoying and endearing after all the years you've been together.
âI mean you have a lot of diamonds lying aroundââ
âSchatje.â
âYes?â All train of thought immediately halts on its tracks. The petname has a hold over you that he oh-so-often uses as leverage. You pout. âStop distracting me.â
He smilesâsoft and uncharacteristic, contradictory to the harsh rasp of his voice and the rough scars on his skin. He smiles a smile he reserves only for your eyes, and you're falling for it, a hundred times over.
two. the demjin.
You don't like when Kaz gets like thisâall wrung up over a waivable matter. It reminds you a lot of what he had to be before, the things he had to do and what Dirtyhands actually stood for. Not at all akin to the Kaz Brekker you knowâthe one who immediately comes whenever one of your crew is threatened, the one who stays up with you as you wait for the rest of your little heist crew to return, the one who goes out of his way to collect little trinkets to bring home to you.
You are hurt, shallow cuts all over your body from a little dagger scuffle with a mercenary, but you're a member of the Dregsâthis, you can take. A little Heartrender magic and some bandages, you will recover in no time.
âYou're back.â
Kaz stops and you look over him to find his knuckles bloodied, hair stuck out of place and clothes disheveled.
âYou're alright, schatje?â
His room at the Slat isn't big contrary to popular belief. He sinks into his chair with a huge sigh. You're watching him three steps away from the edge of his bed.
âWhat did you do?â
He shrugs, tugging his coat off. âBusiness.â
âYou went after them.â
âIt was one part of the business.â He pulls at his gloves, shedding them into the trashâtoo bloodied for him to bother cleaning. âAre you sure you're alright?â
You tuck your hands into your elbows, displeasure visible across your features. âAre you?â
âWhy wouldn't I be?â
âKaz.â
âThey deserved it,â he stubbornly says. âI had to make sure they know not to involve themselves with us. You understand. Besides, I'm alright.â
âI do understand,â you relent. It is business. The Barrell doesn't stop for poets or musicians or lovers, no, it thrives off of the back of violence, taking an eye for an eye. âI just wish that you were here when I woke up.â
His shoulders loosen and he is your Kaz again. Not the one molded by Ketterdam, birthed at its harbour. He's the man so in love that he will dry the seas for you if you say the word. Kaz takes your hands. They are warm on his skin and his heart swells.
âI am sorry, schatje.â
You kneel in front of him, leaning your elbows on his thighs to press a brief kiss on his lips. âLet's stay off business for a while.â
âKaz?â A sound outside the door, followed by three raps. âAre you in there?â
âHe is, Jesper. Give us a moment,â you reply.
You hear hushed whispersâboth low voices, so you assume it's Wylan. Your suspicion is confirmed when the second voice sounds from behind the door.
âNo, weâno, Jesâdon't have anything urgent. We simply wanted to know if he is well. Take your time. We'll be going now.â
âGood night, Wylan,â you reply, immediately hearing fading footsteps soon after.
âFifty kruge says they're already together,â says Jesper, out of your earshot.
Wylan rolls her eyes. âFifty on them not dating yet.â
Jesper immediately clasps Wylan's hand with a loud âDeal!â
iii. the marketplace.
âBusybodies,â Kaz complained, walking a step behind you as you're treading through the Ketterdam food market. âThey are not even hiding. In broad daylight. How have they never gotten caught before?â
âKaz, my love.â You are trying not to laugh as you're picking and choosing fruits. âThey usually do a better job on actual missions.â
They refer to your five lovely friends who have decided to tail you as you're coming down to the market. Kaz is the first to take noticeâblurry figures moving erratically ten steps behind you.
âI should assign them something to do instead of... whatever it is they're currently doing.â
âThey're curious.â You shrug, handing over a few slips of Kruge to the seller and leaving with your bag five apples heavier. âWe've been acting suspicious lately. They'll find out soon enough.â
âI'll bet Inej finds out first.â Kaz nudges your fingers with his, taking the bag from you as he matches his step with yours. âThe Wraith does a better job at spying.â
âMy bet is Matthias.â An unlikely one. He's probably the least nosy out of the five.
Suddenly, you're pulled into a small nook, squuezed between buildings and he presses a kiss on your lips. One turns to two and you're smiling like a lovesick fool when he pulls away.
âWe're being followed and you pull this?â
âSchatje, our pursuers are horrendously bad at this.â He shrugs, pulling away. You resume your trek through the market. âLook. They've lost us.â
iv. the marriage certificate.
âFake IDs,â Kaz says, pointing at the towering Fjerdan. âYou'll be collecting them from Anika.â
Matthias doesn't mind running errands, although he does think that he'll be better suited for physical fights other than fetching papers, but he doesn't argue. It seems he is doing more than simply fetching papers though.
âThat is real?â He asks Anika, pointing at a marriage certificate she has on her desk. Marriage certificates are mundane enough not to warrant this type of reaction, but it is the name that shocks even him to the core. Kaz Brekker and you, married?
âAs real as can be around here.â Anika scrambles to hide it away. âHere are your IDs. Don't tell anyone about it.â
In Matthias' defense, he doesn't end up telling just anyone. He tells Nina and Nina is the one telling everyone else. Within a week, every member of the Crows have known about it.
Wylan hands Jesper slips of fifty kruge, grumbling that this is unfair. Nina looks like spring has just arrived. Inej is probably the least reactiveâbut that is because she's already found out long before the others. She's the Wraith after all. Matthias is anxious. For all everyone knows, he is the one responsible for the news.
You strut into the dining room, seeing everyone gathered and raise an eyebrow.
âWhy are you all here?â
âWe want to askââ
Before Nina can finish her sentence, Jesper blurts out. âYou're married?â
You chuckle, shrugging. âYou found out.â
âHow long?â
âKaz? Really?â
âHow did that happen?â
A series of questions that you don't actually answer. You stand there, leaning on the back of one of the wooden chairs situated in the roomâremorseless to your very core.
âAsk him about it.â
That ends the discussion. None of them will actually ask him about it and even if any of them actually finds the courage to, the likelihood of Kaz answering anything that's not a sarcastic remark or a threat is close to none.
âHow did you find out anyway?â
Everyone points towards Matthias and to the Fjerdan's horror, Nina's pointer finger finds him, too.
You only smile, silently planning to brag to your spouse that you've won your bet.

"That's my wife."
pairing: kaz brekker x wife!reader
genre: fluff
el's thoughts: requested by @jahayla-parker i realized i had this written ages ago and never posted it so here you go hahaha
~*~
âJust a cup of water please.â Y/N sat at the bar in the Crow Club, observing all the people playing at the tables.
Jesper sitting with Wylan by his side, Nina and Matthias sat farther down at the bar talking with Inej. Her eyes scanned over the laughing faces until they met a familiar pair of dark brown eyes. She smirked into her glass as she saw Rotty come up to Kaz with a small piece of paper.
âWhatâs a pretty girl like you doing all by yourself?â
She wrinkled her nose at the strong scent of alcohol as she turned around to face a young man around her age. She tried her best to smile politely, âIâm just waiting for some friends.â
She wasnât lying. Kaz told her to wait until one of the other crows were ready to walk back to the Slat.
âWell then, mind if I keep you company?â
Y/N racked her mind trying to think of some way to turn him down without making a scene. Footsteps and the clicking of a cane were heard behind her.
âI mind.â Kazâs raspy voice spoke over her shoulder.
The young man stood up taller, âSo what? Youâre saying this girl is your girlfriend?â
By now, Jesper, Wylan, Nina, Matthias and Inej had slowly made their way over, standing behind Y/N. Kaz stepped forward and placed both hands on his cane, leaning ever-so-slightly towards the man.
âNo. What Iâm saying is that this girl is my wife.â
A small gasp was heard from both Nina and Inej. Y/N turned and looked at them shyly, âSurpriseâŠ?â
She turned back around to look at Kaz and the young man, only to see him making a beeline to the door. She looked up at Kaz as he stood right beside her, âWell, catâs out of the bag now.â
He shrugged, âItâs about time they knew anyway.â
Jesper made silent hand gestures between the couple, âSo you two have been married this whole time?!â
Y/N chuckled, âNot the whole time⊠Just about a year.â
He stood there, eyes flickering between the two as the rest of the crows tried to wrap their minds around the news.
âWhen were you gonna tell us?!â

âž YANDERE KAZ BREKKER HEADCANNONS
âź content warning â ê° stalking ; kidnapping ; murder ; drugging ; mentions of death ; mentions of heists & thievery ; brief strong language ; no pronouns for reader ; etc. based off this request. ê±
ââ ( navigation ) ( masterlist ) ( request )
When Kaz realizes his feelings for you, at first, he wants nothing more than to bury them far below the ground and to forget about them. After all, he's Dirtyhands â Bastard of the Barrel and the closest thing there'd ever to be its king. He doesn't have the luxury of exploring how much further these feeling for you go â not when his entire focus is on getting revenge from Pekka Rollins and making enough kruge to swim in.
So he keeps his feelings hidden, buried deep within the most obscure crevices of his heart. And this works, for a time. Kaz is no stranger to ignoring his emotions, and focusing on his wealth and his revenge has never been a foreign concept to him.
That is, until you get hurt â which, in a place such as Ketterdam, is inevitable.
From there on out, Kaz realizes how important you truly are to him. And, although he'd rather pull his eye out than admit his true feelings, he learns to accept them.
You're a weakness, but one he can't afford to lose.
He remembers how distraught he'd been over Jordie's death vividly, remembers it all too well. He didn't intend on you being a repeat of his brother, even if Jordie's death was only a result of the boy's own naivety.
Kaz begins to slowly remove you from the more dangerous tasks, instead opting hire other members of the Dregs to take your place on most expeditions and heists. He doesn't want you to know of his plans â not yet, and he was no stranger to waiting.
He starts to have some members of the Dregs keep track of you and tell him of your daily activities. It was necessary, he'd argue, to ensure that you remain safe if he wasn't there to protect you, and in Ketterdam, the more eyes he had on you, the better.
Kaz also begins to watch you whenever he can. Some would call it deranged, and maybe it is, but he couldn't care less. All that matters is that he knows where you are at all times, whether you yourself know it or not.
Anyone who he deems a threat, Kaz kills in cold blood, whatever the reason may be. Someone who so much as looks at you for too long may be put in peril, and he isn't past hurting, maiming, and blackmailing to get the message across that you're off limits.
If Kaz were to decide to kidnap you, it would be after much planning and careful consideration. He knows you'd be mad. He knows you'd be scared out of your mind â that you'd be scared of him. But you'd be safe; he'd make sure of that. And if you're safe, what else truly mattered?
Kaz is certain to make sure that you're unconscious when he takes you, but takes some chloroform in the case that you wake up. He isn't particularly keen on taking any chances, especially with you. If he sees you stir, he won't hesitate to place a rag over your mouth to keep you asleep. There wasn't any room for mistake in his plan.
When you awake, you find yourself in an unfamiliar room. For the most part, that is. Items of yours or those that bear an eerie likeness to your own items are scattered about the room, all in a very clean fashion. In fact, the more you stare, the more you find that the room looks almost like your own. The bedsheets are the same color as your own ones, the layout quite similar, too. Though you'd never had much of a say in how your last bedroom appeared, it chilled you down to your core to think of why this one seemed to be a recreation of yours.
When you first see Kaz, you almost want to laugh at the absurdity of it all, but the look he gives you makes you shudder instead. Whatever reason you had woken up in a bed that wasn't your own in a room that wasn't your own, wasn't good if he was involved.
If you're terrified of him, Kaz doesn't seem to care. In fact, he's so indifferent to your plight that sometimes you wonder if the real reason he took you was because he loved you, but you weren't in any position to ask.
Kaz isn't one for physical affection, so instead he prefers to spoil you with anything you want. His methods of getting certain items aren't always conventional, or legal, for that matter, but he's never been one for following the rules.
It's nearly impossible to escape wherever he brings you. Being the master of lock-picking, Kaz is sure to make every lock fool-proof, to reinforce every door. On top of this, he ensures that no one knows of the location to which he takes you, even if he has to bloody his hands to make sure that he's the only one with the knowledge. As it was said: Kaz doesn't like taking chances, especially with you.
Now, this being said, if you do manage to escape, Kaz will go into something of a manic frenzy. He'd done nearly everything to stop you from escaping, and yet you still managed to slip from his grasp.
From there on out he'd spend all of his time searching for you, the rest of his duties be damned. He'd made a promise to himself that he wouldn't lose you â not like he lost Jordie â and he wasn't planning on breaking it.
It wouldn't take long for him to find you. Whether you were still in the woods or whatever deserted land he'd situated the house in, or you'd managed to make it back to the city, rest assured, you'd be found.
"Try to leave again, and I'll break your fucking neck."
It wasn't true, of course. Kaz couldn't harm a hair on your head â not if he tried. But he wasn't above other measures that included hurting the people you loved and scaring you out of your wits, so it was best to simply let yourself believe his lie.
Overall, Kaz is most likely one of, if not the most dangerous person in all of Ketterdam to have an obsession with you. They say he'd do anything for money, but what he'd do just to have you couldn't even compare. He's not past killing everyone you've ever known just to make you compliant, and maybe he even finds some sick joy in it â your fear, your utter desperation. He revels in it.
But, at the very least he'll keep you safe, and at the end of the day, that's what everyone in Ketterdam wants, isn't it?
After all, he'd always told you he protects his investments.

Everything
Kaz Brekker x gn!healer!reader
Requests: âDonât make me say it. I canât say the words.â & âYou are everything. Everything.â Although I did change it to âYou are everything to me. Everything.â
Warnings: bruises, knives, guns, stabbing, blood, murder (feral Kaz)
A/N: Yeah, this is pretty dark guys. If youâve watched the show/read the books youâll be fine, but the crows plotlines are usually dark. I actually really like this one though! Italics are Kazâs thoughts.
Request a prompt with one of my characters!
Kaz Brekker was methodical. He planned everything he could down to the very minute. It was how he was able to become the leader of the Dregs, the Bastard of the Barrel. No one dared cross Kaz, in fear of losing their life.
His crew were nearly as untouchable as he was. Jesper, the sharpshooter. Inej, the wraith. Wylan, the demolitions expert. Nina, the heartrender. And Matthias, the druskelle. They, along with their leader, made up one of the most prominent gangs in Ketterdam.
Then there was you. You were the crow that Kaz kept tucked away from the rest of Ketterdam.
Nina had brought you to Kaz after finding you help a small child with a nasty scrape on his knee. She watched as you guided your hand over the scrape, and the cuts disappeared. She hadnât seen another Corporalnik in Ketterdam before, and knew that having a healer would help immensely when it came to heists.
Kaz was reluctant to take you in, only agreeing once heâd seen you heal a black eye Jesper had been sporting for a few days. He gave you a room at the Slat, gave you a few kruge, and introduced you to the other crows.
They were all easy to get along with. Nina helped you ease into this new life, often times joining you for meals, or taking walks through the markets with you. You had an obvious initial distaste for Mathias, often times choosing to stay away from the druskelle, but seeing him with Nina quickly put you at ease. Inej was incredibly kind to you, and graciously thanked you whenever you healed her. Wylan and Jesper were easy to get along with, often times too absorbed in each other to be aware of other things going on around them.
Then there was Kaz. It was more difficult to have a working relationship with Kaz, anyone could tell you he usually kept to himself unless he was giving orders or collecting kruge. You tried not to take his indifference to you personally.
You do remember the day things changed between you and Kaz though. The group had all come back from a heist exhausted, some injured, some just tired, but you could see Kaz out of the corner of your eye walking to his room quicker than he usually does. You followed him upstairs, and softly knocked on the door.
âCome in.â He grunted.
Youâd never been in Kazâs room before, you donât think anyone other than Kaz actually has. Itâs dark, and honestly exactly what youâd expected. A bed in the corner, a desk against the wall cluttered with paper, and a wardrobe that he was currently riffing through.
âIs there a reason youâve decided to grace me with your presence Y/n?â He asks, his tone sharp.
âHow did you know it was me?â You shuffle forward, and close his door behind you.
âEveryone else knows not to bother me after a job.â He turned his head towards you slightly, allowing you to catch a glimpse of red on his cheek.
âYouâre hurt.â You take a step towards him. He steps back from you instantaneously.
âIâm fine.â He turns back to his wardrobe.
âSaints, why must you be so stubborn?â You sigh. He doesnât answer you. âI thought you hired me to heal you, so let me do my job.â
Itâs his turn to sigh this time. It would be nice to stop the stinging sensation on his face. He glances at you, then gestures you towards him. âFine.â He sits down in the chair at his desk, and watches you slowly step towards him.
You slowly move towards him, aware of the way his shoulder tense with every step you take. You donât know exactly whatâs happened to him, but you can easily tell heâs got some sort of touch aversion after watching him for a while. The black gloves that never come off his hands are used as another layer to keep others away.
Once youâre standing in front of him you take a look at the thin cut across his cheek. âI didnât know the bastard of the barrel could bleed.â You murmur.
You donât fail to miss the slight upward quirk of his lips at your comment. He holds his breath as your fingertips hover over him. He expected to feel the waters rise up in his chest, drowning him, instead heâs surprised to feel warmth from your hand. Youâre careful not to actually touch him, pulling away once heâs been healed.
âThat wasnât so bad, was it?â You ask, stepping away from him.
That was the moment you became more than just the Dregsâ healer. Whenever you went out anywhere Kaz would send Inej with you for protection. He knew how valuable a grisha was in Ketterdam, and he was not going to let someone else take you away. He called you into his office in the Crow Club or his room in the Slat more often. Sometimes heâd need you to heal a paper cut, other times heâd just want your company while he planned out heists. On nights where he came back banged up more than usual heâd bare more skin to you, allowing you to heal him and provide him the comfort a part of him so desperately needed.
Heâd never let it be known he was growing some kind of attachment to you. You were a weakness to him, and Kaz Brekker didnât have any weaknesses.
It didnât take long for the other crows to figure out something was different between the two of you. Kaz was a cold, corrupt gang leader, but they could see a shift in him when you were near.
Heâd give you his coat if you felt cold on the walk from the club back to the Slat. He kept your favorite drink in stock at the Crow Club. Heâd look to you for your opinion on plans for heists. He whispered comments to you while he thought the others werenât paying attention, a smug grin growing on his face as you laughed at what heâd said. Soft isnât the right word for what Kaz had become when you were near. He was gentle with you.
Jesper caught you sneaking out of Kazâs room early one morning still in the clothes youâd worn the previous day. He smirked at Kaz as he ate his breakfast for the day.
âHave a pleasant night boss?â He asked over his cup of coffee.
Kaz raises a brow at him, silently asking what he meant.
Jesper simply looks over at you, who is currently in conversation with Nina and Mathias on the other side of the room. His eyes travel back to Kaz, gleaming with mischief.
Kaz looks like heâs about to hit Jesper over the head with the crowâs head of his cane. He gets a stern talking to in Kazâs office later that day, and is informed that if anyone finds out about his meetings with you, his precious revolvers might end up on someoneâs table in the market.
No one mentions any changes theyâve seen in Kaz after that. Everything goes smoothly from then on, until one particular heist.
It was a lot like any other heist, sneak into a place, steal something that costs an exorbitant amount of money, then sell it for twice the price. The problem was Kaz needed someone to sneak into a crowded party, and at that point most of the barrel could pick out any of the crows in a crowd. They needed someone that could be inconspicuous.
It was the perfect job for you. Youâd always wanted to go on the crazy adventures your friend went on so often, and this was finally something you could swing.
When you volunteered to step in, Kaz immediately refused. There was a reason he kept you locked away in the Slat during jobs.
No amount of kruge is worth putting your life on the line.
He gives excuse after excuse as to why you canât be used. You havenât done this before. You donât know your way around the building. They need their healer ready to treat them afterwards.
I canât bear the thought of losing you.
âYou donât even know how to use a weapon.â Kaz sighed, barely looking up at you from the blueprints on his desk.
âInej can teach me, right?â You turn to the wraith with pleading eyes.
Inej stutters as she looks between you, and the icy stare coming from Kaz.
âBesides, you said that you wanted me to learn how to fight.â
No, I said you should learn to use a weapon. I figured Jesper would let you shoot a few bottles behind the Slat.
âWe need them boss. Y/n is our best bet.â Jesper shrugs as he becomes the receiving end of Kazâs glare.
Kaz looks back down at his blueprints. He knows itâs going to be a busy event, and the others will be spotted on sight. He briefly wonders if he can hire someone else to do the job, but then he looks back up at you. He trusts you, more than heâs trusted anyone in a long time. He knows this is something youâre perfectly capable of, but is it something heâs willing to risk?
âFine.â He grunts. âBut Jesper and Inej will teach you to use their weapons first.â
Your hearts swells up with pride. If you didnât know any better you wouldâve thrown yourself over his desk to hug him. âThank you Kaz. I promise you wonât regret this.â
If only you knew how wrong you had been.
You did train with Inej and Jesper prior to the heist. You even practiced fighting with Mathias a little bit, who was significantly holding back his punches in fear of actually hurting you.
Kaz had made sure to drill his instructions into everyoneâs heads, until they could repeat their schedules without thinking about it. Everything had gone to according to plan on the night of, until things took a drastic turn.
He kept an eye on you for as long as he could, until he was needed somewhere else, leaving you in the crowd of the large hall completely isolated from the rest of the group.
You were doing well on your own, slowly becoming more confident as you strolled around and made conversation. You managed to distract all of the merchants with conversation long enough for the crew to get what they needed. It was nearing the time Kaz told you to meet him outside when you were spotted by someone. You vaguely recognized the face, it was a man youâd seen in the Crow Club a few times.
He mustâve known about your affiliation with the crows, because next thing you know youâre being escorted the opposite direction you need to go. You try to stay calm, and remember what Jesper and Inej taught you about fighting, but you know with them holding onto your arms itâll be near impossible to reach for the knife you have hidden away.
You end up in a courtyard behind the building when they start to question you. Simple things like âwhy are you here?â and âwhere are your friends?â. They quickly become aggravated with your innocent act, and become more incessant.
All it took was for one of the men holding you to loosen his grip for you to swing your arm away, and hit him on the side of his face with your elbow. Chaos ensued immediately. You were able to grab your knife, and used it as best you could against the three men fighting you. You had taken a few hits, but were able to stand your ground fairly well, until you felt a sharp pain in your side.
You froze, partially from shock, but mostly from the searing pain you felt. You looked down to see a dagger lodged in your side, being held onto by one of the men. He had a wicked grin on his face as he twisted the knife inside of you. You wailed out as he pulled the knife from your body, and watched as you collapsed to the ground.
âBrekker wonât be able to save you from that, little bird.â He snikered, then ran back inside with the others.
You could feel the blood pooling at your side. You tried to press a hand to the now sticky fabric of your shirt, and put pressure on the wound. You were far too hurt to be able to concentrate your powers to one spot. Your vision started to get spotty when you heard voices above you. A girlâs voice, clearly in distress, and a boyâs voice, sharp and stern.
More hands pressed to your side, then something was wrapped tightly around your waist.
You couldnât hear what they were actually saying before you felt yourself being picked up, and held in someoneâs arms. You looked up to see the figure that was holding you. A bigger build, wide shoulders, blonde hair? Mathias. Had you been conscious enough to speak you wouldâve made a joke. Something about a druskelle carrying a grisha to safety. Heâd laugh, but retort, telling you about how many times heâs had to save Nina.
You let yourself fall into the darkness after a while, your head lolling against Mathiasâ chest. Itâs okay, you thought, you knew you werenât going to make it as soon as he pulled that knife out of you. You just wish you were able to see your friends one last time, to see Kaz one last time.
Kaz could feel his heart thundering in his chest. He tried to keep a calm composure, but anyone of the crows could see the anxiety building up in him. He was barking orders as soon as he saw you laying on the ground, a puddle of your own blood surrounding you. The waves start to build in his chest. He wants to reach out and touch you, to give you any semblance of comfort, because youâre not dead, thereâs no way heâs letting you die. Heâll destroy all of Kerch before he lets that happen.
He notices when your head lolls. âQuickly.â He urges the group, speeding his own pace back to the Slat.
Once everyones regrouped they all gather in your room, where Mathias has lain you down on your bed.
Kaz tosses a pouch of coins to Jesper. âGo get some medicine. I donât care how much it costs. Get the best you can find.â
Inej kneels down next to you, whispering prayers to her saints. Mathias leaves to gather supplies to help you. Nina keeps your heartbeat steady, her hands hovering above your chest.
The waters have reached his lungs now, pulling him down deeper into the ocean. Your blood coats the scarf Inej tied around you earlier, staining the blue material a dark, deep red.
âSaints! Kaz, your heartbeat is obscenely loud! Could you please go anywhere else?â Nina snaps at him.
Kaz doesnât move for a moment, then quickly leaves your room to go to his own. He attempts to slow his breathing, to calm himself down, but anytime he closes his eyes he sees you again. You and Jordie.
Itâs days before he talks to anyone. He only ever leaves his room to step into yours. Nina occupies a chair near your bed, dark circles under her eyes from lack of sleep.
âStill alive.â Is all she says to him. He nods, then retreats back to his room.
He scours any and all information he has about the party, until he finds what might give him some relief. He leaves the Slat early one morning, and doesnât return until late that evening. The gold crowâs head of his cane is now a bright crimson color. Blood is splattered on his neck, and one can assume his clothes as well, though the black hides it well from anyone giving him a second glance.
Jesper is surprised to see Kaz in such a state, knowing that he liked to keep up appearances.
âHey boss, youâve got a littleâŠâ he trails off, gesturing to his neck.
âItâs not mine.â He rushes passed Jesper, back to his room to start scrubbing the blood away.
You wake up about a week after the heist. Your throat is dry, and you feel incredibly hungry. Your limbs feel weak when move to sit up.
Nina sits next to you on a chair. Sheâs slouched over, soft snores falling from her lips. You softly nudge her, and let out a hoarse âNina.â
She grumbles to herself as she wakes up. âKaz, theyâre fine.â She slowly opens her eyes to see you staring back at her, and she gasps. âSaints! Youâre awake!â
You point to the cup that sits next to her, and gulp down the water when she hands it to you.
She stands up and looks towards the door to your room. âIâm going to go get Kaz.â
You grab her wrist before she can leave you. âPlease donât. I donât think I can deal with incessant âI told you soâs right now.â
Nina scoffs. âOh please, heâs been worried sick about you. I had to kick him out of here because his heartbeat was distracting me from yours.â
âReally?â
âYeah. He even paid for some pretty pricey medicine for you. Speaking of which, here, take these.â She holds out a few pills. âNow, Iâm going to go get Kaz, and maybe after this near-death experience you two will finally just tell each other that you love one another.â
âWhat? I donât-I donât know what youâre talking about.â You shake your head.
âItâs okay, heâs not very good at hiding it either.â She smirks at you before she leaves.
Sheâs only gone a few minutes before your door swings open with Kaz in your doorway.
âYouâre awake.â He says.
You shift so that youâre sitting up on your bed. Kaz closes your door behind him, then sits down in the chair Nina had been using, his eyes trained on the floor ahead.
âIâm sorry about the heist Kaz. But I promise I didnât tell them anything-â
âI know.â
You furrow your brows. âYou know?â
He looks up at you. When he does this, you realize just how close you are to him. You can see every detail in his face. The way his blue eyes sparkled in the dim candlelight of your room. You could brush your leg against his if you shifted. You start to move away from him, afraid of touching him, but stop when what sounds like a plea escapes him.
âStay.â
You let out the breath youâd been holding, and relax beside him.
âNina said you were worried about me.â You say softly.
He laughs a little, shaking his head. Itâs a sight heâs reserved for just you. âOf course she did.â
âWere you?â
He looks into your eyes as if heâs searching for something. âI was.â He takes a breath, then turns his body so heâs facing you. âYou scared me Y/n. I thought you had died, or were close to it. And IâŠâ His admission is quiet. âDonât make me say it. I canât say the words.â He hangs his head in shame. The bastard of the barrel canât admit how he feels.
âI understand.â You nod. âI feel so much love for you Kaz, you consume my every thought. You donât need to say anything. I understand.â
He looks up at you, surprised. Surprised that someone as pure as you, someone who was literally made to heal, could ever love someone whoâs caused so much pain as he has. He slowly removes his right glove, and drops the leather to the ground. He lifts his hand to your face, hovering near your cheek.
âYou donât have to.â You whisper, body frozen.
âI want to.â He takes a deep breath in an attempt to push the waves down, and slowly caresses your cheek. His throat tightens up, and for a moment it feels like heâs drowning again. But he focuses on your warmth, and his breathing slows down again. âYou are everything to me. Everything.â

Don't Go Dark - Kaz Brekker x Reader
Title: Don't Go Dark
Pairing: Kaz Brekker x Female!Reader
Summary: Kaz Brekker realizes that he has feelings for his healer.
Word Count: 4.7k
Warnings: What you could expect from Six of Crows
A/N: This is my first time writing for Kaz, so if it's out of character, I apologize. I kind of gave up and phoned it in at the end so if you can tell, I'm sorry. Very loosely inspired by the song Don't Go Dark by Bleachers.
For most of his life, Kaz Brekker called the Barrel homeâdespite the fact that there was really nothing homey about itâand there was one thing that he knew for certain about the dreadful place: that it always had a tendency to contort even the purest of things into something nasty. No one was good-natured for the sake of it. If someone was kind, it was usually a ploy, as he very well knew. That was one of his first lessons in survival. Love was a weakness that oftentimes had disastrous consequences. The only thing to come from the Barrel was carnage. The currency was blood, and heâd paid his share and then some with his own, and with others. Only the most ruthless and ungodly people prospered, and prosper he did.Â
Believe it or not, he did remember the short life he had before the Barrel. He remembered his father and their farm, and he remembered after his father died when Jordie sold the farm with the promise that they would find fortune in Ketterdam. That was when heâd learned the most valuable lesson that there was to learn. That the only person he could truly count on was himself. To love nothing and trust no one. If he loved nothing, then there was nothing to be used against him. Nothing that anyone could take from him. It got lonely, but it had kept him alive for this long, a feat not many accomplished, so that was how he lived.Â
She was different. She didnât live under the same guise of violence as the rest of Ketterdam. She didnât have the same mentality: that things can alwaysâand most likely willâget worse. She didnât hold grudges. Not like Kaz did. Kaz was fueled by vengeance and spite. He took whatever was thrown at him in stride with the knowledge that he would find vindication by dealing a much harsher punishment.Â
The winter chill bit to the bone, an unfortunate truth for Kaz especially, whose bones were already not in well-working order. His limp was more pronounced as he made his way to his office (formerly Haskellâs). The Dregs were still bustling about, doing Saints knows what, but none would bother him. It was late, the state of his face was less pristine than when heâd left, and his permanent scowl was even more noticeable than usual. No, they would leave him be.
The meeting with the Razorgulls had gone as well as heâd expected, which was not well at all. They werenât too happy to see him, still holding a grudge over Pekka Rollinsâ quite unfortunate downfall. Theyâd landed a couple of punches, but he always had the upper hand, and they were smart enough when it was over to abandon Fifth Harbor entirely.
His office door was slightly ajar, something that didnât bode well. He knew that the healer would be waiting for him, but she was never so careless to leave the door open, as there were quite a few documents and collectibles that he preferred to keep away from the other Dregs.Â
He pushed the rickety door open and immediately he could feel that something was off. She was sitting in the extra wooden chair that he kept there (mostly for her and Jesper since he rarely gave anyone else the privilege to stay in his office for long periods). He sat in his desk chair, his gloved fingers thumbing through the papers that heâd left. Nothing important, just something to keep him occupied.Â
Kaz Brekker noticed everything; meaning that Kaz Brekker noticed her trembling hands, though she tried to disguise it by keeping them folded in her lap. He noticed her red-rimmed eyes and puffy cheeks that sheâd tried to hide, and he noticed that she was jumpier than usual. Something had happened, that much was obvious, but he wouldnât push. If she wanted to talk, she would, otherwise, it was none of his concern. Though, he couldnât help but feel a twinge of anger at the mere idea of anything happening to her.
âAgain? Kaz, you really should be more careful.â It was no surprise that she was born a healer. It was quite literally in her nature to be caring. She was born to fix things.Â
âWhy? If I were to die tomorrow, all of Ketterdam would breathe a sigh of relief. Maybe even cheers to the occasion,â Kaz scoffed. It sounded grim, but it meant that he was good at what he did, so he saw it as an honor of sorts. He was in control.
âI wouldnât.â She frowned. She moved to stand above him, getting leverage so she could properly heal his face. Her lips were pursed in concentration as her fingers hovered over a gash on his cheek. It was a strange feeling. It was like he could feel the skin stitching back together as she worked. It was like an itch. âI quite like having you around.â
âFlattery wonât get you anywhere.â Kaz raised his eyebrows, a ghost of a smile playing on his lips. âWhat are you getting at? A raise?âÂ
âOh please, why would I even bother trying to flatter you?â She rolled her eyes. âNot when I know all I have to do is compliment Jesperâs hat, give him a few kruge to gamble away, and heâll talk you into whatever I want.â
âAnd here I thought that you were too soft for the Barrel.â Kaz smirked.Â
âIâm serious, what are you going to do if Iâm not around to fix you up?âÂ
He thought about the statement carefully. The implication of the words. That was the confirmation he needed to push for further information. Sheâd opened the door. âAre you planning on going somewhere?â Maybe thatâs why she was acting so strange. She seemed like the type to get all weepy about leaving. He wasnât particularly fond of the idea himself. It would be harrowing work trying to find a new healer. Especially a trustworthy one, but he wouldnât stop her if thatâs what she wanted. He just wouldnât pretend to be happy about either.
âNo!â She exclaimed quickly. âNo, of course not.â Her quick response and furrowed brow were a relief. She wasnât planning on leaving him. Not yet, anyway.Â
âWell, if youâre not planning on leaving, then I suppose I donât have to worry about it then, do I?â Kaz spoke bluntly, though he supposed if she listened close enough, she would hear the twinge of satisfaction hidden beneath. It was selfish. Ketterdam was a grim place, but he didnât want her to leave. She made it a little less grim.Â
Her fingers moved eloquently, drifting over his broken nose, close enough that he could feel the warmth radiating from her palm. It did him well not to think about how close she was to him. It would probably send him into fight-or-flight mode if he did.Â
He winced as he felt the bone setting back into place. It was nothing that hadnât happened before, though he wasnât sure that he would ever get used to the damn itch that plagued the area as she was working her magic. That wasnât what bothered him, though. What bothered him was that she hadnât spoken again, something that was quite unlike her. Normally she would be scolding him or telling him all about whatever had happened at the Crow Club that afternoon. No, she hadnât spoken and she hadnât provided any elaboration to her previous statement.Â
âIs everything alright?â He pressed further. If it was anyone else, he wouldâve left it be. A problem for another day, but this wasnât anyone else.Â
âNo⊠I meanâŠâ She started and paused, turning to face the wall to her side as if avoiding looking at him. He was relieved that she wasnât planning on leaving the Dregs just yet, but there was something bothering her and he couldnât deny being slightly concerned about what it was. Had something happened at the club while he was gone? Surely one of the others downstairs would have mentioned something to him when he walked in if it had. But, there was no way to be sure.Â
She turned back to face him, taking a shaky breath as if trying to figure out what to say. âThis afternoon while I was on my way to the club, a man grabbed me. Put a knife to my throat and said that if I didnât give him all of my kruge, then he would slit my throat, watch me bleed out, and then take it all anyways. It wasnât even much, just seventeen, but he was willing to kill me for it.â He clenched his jaw as she recounted the story. He wouldnât interrupt, but heâd be lying if he said that he wasnât already plotting on what he would do when he found the bastard. She reached up to fiddle with the necklace chain that she always wore, but it was missing. Heâd taken her locket too.
âI was sure he would kill me even if I gave it to him, I saw his face for Saintsâ sake, but I just⊠It made me think about if something had happened to me, then who would be here to make sure that you didnât get yourself killed? I mean, youâve almost done it several times with me here and Iâm one of the best healers in Kerch, not to pat myself on the back or anythingâŠâ She was one of the best healers in Kerch. That was why heâd recruited her in the first place, and that was why she was under his protection. Though, he thought that she mightâve been exaggerating. He was pretty sure, he only almost died twice, and only once was his fault.Â
âWho was it?â Kaz said through gritted teeth. It was unlikely that it was anyone from a rival gang. It wasnât a secret that she was associated with the Dregs and they werenât stupid. Pulling a stunt like that would start a war, especially since it was in Fifth Harbor. That was his territory. No, the only one that bold would be the Dime Lions, but they wouldâve killed her to send a message. This was probably some random person off of the street if he had to guess. Looking for a quick buck, so they thought why not steal it? What they didnât know was that theyâd stolen it from the wrong woman.Â
âKaz-â
âWho was it?â He repeated.Â
âIt doesnât matter. The point is, that I might not be here next time you decide to go and get yourself all bloodied up, and what if itâs more serious next time?â He didnât like the way that she was talking so casually about the prospect of dying. Like it was inevitable, and she was making her final arrangements before she went.Â
âListen to me carefully. Nothingâs going to happen to you because I wonât let it.â It was a statement not a question. He would make sure to get the message across that not only was she associated with the Dregs, but she was under the protection of Dirtyhands himself, and he would make sure to send a very clear warning as to what would happen should anyone get the bright idea to lay a finger on his crew again.Â
âYouâre not always going to be there to protect me, Kaz. We all know itâs only a matter of time. People like me donât make it very long here. Iâm not strong, or smart, or resourceful enoughâŠâ Her eyes were glassy, trying to hold back the tears that were forming in her eyes. He was confused. None of those things could have been farther from the truth. She may have been soft, sure, but that didnât mean that she wasnât smart or strong. She had to be strong to have put up with him for so long. He wasnât known to be the most facile person in the world.Â
âNothing is going to happen to you.â Kazâs voice was gravelly. It was rough. In fact, heâd often heard it described as the voice of a demon, or the devil himself. There was nothing soothing about it, yet he saw her shoulders slump in what seemed to be relief. That even though the Saints had never looked out for her, he would.Â
She didnât say anything else. Neither did he. That was that. There was nothing left to be said. He didnât make promises that he didnât intend to keep. He lied, he stole, he killed, but he didnât break his promises. And there wasnât a promise that he ever intended to keep more than that one.Â
She silently worked on mending the split on his cheek. The Razorgulls had gotten a couple of good shots in. More than he thought, and he was starting to feel it, though he wouldnât for long.Â
âStay at the Slat tonight.â He finally broke the silence. She didnât live far, but clearly she wasnât safe and he couldnât have that.
âWhat?â She shot him a puzzled look. It was seemingly out of the blue, and he didnât exactly give much room for any discussion.Â
âI want you to stay at the Slat tonight. Itâs late, you shouldnât walk home in the dark.âÂ
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kaz perused the selection at Alwynnâs pawn shop. When heâd noticed that her necklace had been stolen, he knew that it had probably ended up in a pawn shop somewhere. No one stole jewelry off of ladies on the street to wear. No, clearly he needed money.Â
Heâd expected to have to go to more than one shop to find any relevant information, but no. It was almost too easy. Heâd spotted the necklace on a display in the front of the store. He recognized it immediately. The dainty gold chain couldâve easily been confused, but the locket that dangled from it, couldnât be.Â
âMr. Brekker, I didnât think of you as the jewelry type,â Alwynn gave a short laugh.Â
âWell, Alwynn, there are quite a few things you donât know about me.âÂ
âThat, Iâm sure of.â
âHow much did you buy it for?â Kaz inquired.
âBought it for twenty-five. Selling it for forty-two.â Kaz wasnât surprised. Alwynn had always been a crook.Â
âWho brought it in?âÂ
âIâm afraid I canât say. Merchant-client privilege, Iâm sure you understand.â Alwynn appeared nervous now. Good.
âIâll pay double the price.â
Alwynn thought for a moment. âHis nameâs Griffin. He came in yesterday afternoon. Heâs been staying in the alley beside Burkeâs.âÂ
âThank you, Alwynn. Itâs been a pleasure as always.â He was well aware that he probably couldâve stolen the necklace or threatened him without spending the kruge, but he decided to, for once, pick his battles. He slid over the proper amount of kruge before making his way to the door.
Kaz found Griffin exactly where Alwynn said he would be.Heâd clearly been staying there, the pile of rags on the ground and empty bottles were scattered beside them. He almost felt sorry for him. He almost felt sorry for him. Almost.
Kaz approached Griffin, making his presence known. The man, probably around twenty or so, must have been at least a little intelligent, because his expression was a mixture of fear and confusion.Â
âGood evening Griffin,â Kaz crooned. âYou know, I heard from a close source of mine that you met a lady around this area yesterday afternoon.âÂ
âI meet a lot of ladies around here.â Griffin scoffed.
âWell, this particular lady said that you threatened her. Stole her money and a necklace. Surely you would remember that. Unless, you make a habit out of stealing from women. Do you?â
âWhat?âÂ
âDo you only target women to pay for your alcohol addiction, or was this particular lady just a special case?âÂ
âI donât know what youâre talking about,â he sputtered.Â
âHow much did you take?â Kaz growled, ignoring the obvious lie that had escaped from his mouth. He didnât need an answer. He already knew. 17 kruge and her necklace (which heâd gotten thirty-five for at the shop), but he wanted to hear him admit it.Â
âI told you, I donât know what youâre talking about.â Even if Kaz didnât already know he was lying, it wouldnât have been hard to tell. The sweat beading at his forehead, the way his eyes darted, the fact that he had around fifty-two kruge worth of bottles at his feet. It was too easy.Â
âThis wouldnât happen to jog your memory would it?â Kaz held the chain out. Griffinâs face went pale. It was as if all of the color had simply vanished. âSo, Iâll ask again: how much did you take?âÂ
âNot a lot, just seventeen kruge, and Iâll-â
âYouâll pay it back. In fact, youâre going to pay back the seventeen that you stole, the eighty-four I had to pay to buy the necklace back from the crook you sold it to, and an extra thirty kruge for making me get out in this dreadful cold to track down you and this necklace.â Kaz felt it to be a fair trade. For him at least.Â
âI donât have that kind of money.â
âWell, I suggest that you find it before the week is out. Paid in full, and after that, I donât want to see you back in Fifth Harbor again, and if I do, Iâll make sure that you end up at the bottom of the Harbor.â He turned to walk back towards the street, but he turned back before he got there. He swung his cane, hard, at Griffinâs right handâhis dominant oneâearning a howl of pain. âNext time you decide to steal jewelry from a woman on the street, I would suggest selling it to a shop thatâs not only a few feet away from where youâre staying.âÂ
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
âWhatâs this?â She looked puzzled at the pouch of kruge that heâd dropped on the table in front of her. Kaz didnât answer, and realization flooded over her face. âKazâŠâ she gave him a stern look. âYou didnât kill him, did you? I would feel really guilty if you killed him.â
âRelax, I didnât kill him.â Kaz scowled. âBut, he wonât be bothering you or anyone else around Fifth Harbor anymore.â
âThat really makes it sound like you killed himâŠâ
âI did not kill him. I simply reminded him that itâs not very polite to threaten women.â Kaz rolled his eyes. âBesides, if Iâd killed him, I wouldnât have gotten this back, would I?â He draped the gold chain over his gloved fingers. It was beside the point that heâd found the necklace before heâd found Griffin, and that he couldâve easily gotten it back had he killed him. She didnât need to know that.Â
âYou got my locket back?â She gasped in disbelief. She took the chain, eyes wide. âHow? WaitâŠâ she paused. âNever mind, I donât want to know.â
âIâll have you know that youâre missing out on quite the lovely story, then,â Kaz teased.Â
âIâm sure. I think itâll be far lovelier if I never find out, though.â She chuckled. âBecause something tells me it involved some of your more extreme measures.â
âNot extreme enough if you ask me. He got to keep all of his fingers. You know if I didnât know any better, Iâd think that youâre making me soft.â
âThank you.â She offered him a gracious smile.Â
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kaz had never been one to fear others. He was fairly confident in his ability to fight his way out of a skirmish, should one come up, so why would he? Heâd fought off far more men than the three in front of him on his own. What could he have to fear?
He had never been afraid, but all it took was a few goddamn words and his blood turned to ice. âIt would be a shame if something were to happen to that healer of yours, wouldnât it?â A threat. A barely subtle attempt at one. In any other case, he probably wouldâve laughed it off. Come up with some witty response. He didnât have it in him. What if it wasnât a bluff?
âIf you touch her, I swear to you, Iâll gut you,â Kaz snarled. It wasnât the smartest move. Now, there was no doubt that he cared. That they could use her against him.Â
âThe Bastard of the Barrel does have a heart, eh?â Rowell sneered. His last encounter with the Razorgulls hadnât ended as smoothly as heâd hoped. Theyâd gone searching on him. Trying to findâwell he supposed they didâfind leverage. Theyâd finally found Kaz Brekkerâs weakness.Â
The words echoed through Kazâs head. âRowell, if you touch her, I can always pay a visit to Broad Street. I seem to recall thatâs where your wife and daughter are? If I find out any of your men touched my healer, Iâll put a bullet in their heads myself.â He was good for it. Rowell knew it. He had never been above killing, and that was when he didnât have something to lose.Â
Rowellâs face contorted in alarm. Kaz knew where his family was. Kaz had just as much leverage as he did. The only difference was Kaz was far more ruthless than Rowell ever imagined.Â
âYou may think youâve found my weakness, Rowell, and maybe you have, but you should know by now that I donât respond well to threats. If youâre going to do something, do it. Otherwise donât waste my time and your breath just telling me about it.â With that, Kaz began his trek back to the Slat. For the first time in quite a long time, he was scared. They could very well call his bluff. By this point, Rowell could have already gotten to her by now. Heâd spent so much of his time focusing on protecting her from the Barrel, that heâd forgotten that association with Kaz Brekker was the biggest threat of all.Â
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
It had been weeks since Rowellâs threat. He hadnât taken it lightly. He didnât think Rowell was brave enough to do anything, but if heâd noticed, it was only a matter of time before others would too, if they hadnât already.Â
Heâd decided to keep his distance. That was the only way he knew how to keep her safe. Kaz Brekker was the most feared man in the Barrel because he had nothing to lose. If it came out that he did in fact care for anything⊠well he had a lot of enemies that would waste no time doing everything in their power to take it from him.Â
Heâd been avoiding her altogether. She was hurt. He knew that. It was better for her to be hurt than dead.Â
He was making his way up the stairs to his study, ready to shut himself for the night to plan for the upcoming job heâd secured. It was nothing big, probably him, Jesper, and a couple of the newer recruits for the Dregs. Test their loyalty before anything major.Â
He saw her near the bar talking to Jesper, laughing at something heâd said. He swiftly turned away. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Xavier (ironically one of the new recruits he was planning to take) grab at her waist. He was quite intoxicated, slurring a remark that he couldnât hear, but was almost certainly derogatory. She politely pushed him aside, muttering a soft âno thank youâ, but Xavier wasnât taking no for an answer.Â
Kaz didnât even have time to think, really. He didnât have to think. It was instinct. He ignored the pain in his leg and crossed the room. Heâd never been the biggest fan of Xavier, so he didnât feel too guilty about the punch that landed on the boyâs jaw. His knuckles throbbed from the contact, but he ignored it. When Xavier offered to try and return the blow, Kaz dodged the jab and cracked his cane over his back.Â
âThis is a respectable establishment, and that means when a woman says ânoâ thatâs the end of the discussion.âÂ
Kaz avoided her gaze, and made his way up to his study, but he was followed.Â
âWhat was that?â
âWhat was what?â Kaz muttered, sitting in his chair, finally resting his leg.Â
âYouâve spent weeks acting like I donât exist, and now youâre getting in bar fights to defend me? And what? Youâre just going to go back to ignoring me?â She was hardly a confrontational person, so Kaz knew that she was angry by the sudden outburst. âI donât get it. What did I do to make you decide that you hate me?âÂ
Surely she didnât really believe that he hated her. âI donât hate you.â He still didnât look up.Â
âSo, what is it then?â She was blinking back tears. He felt guilty, a feeling that he didnât even know he was capable of.Â
âYou seriously donât get it?â
âNo, I donât get it!â She shouted.Â
âI care about you!â He blurted. âFar more than I should.â His confession earned a scoff. âYou donât believe me?â
She raised her eyebrows. âNo, I donât believe you. Why would I?â
âWhy? What would I possibly have to gain from lying to you about that?â
âI donât know, but I never know anything with you!âÂ
âFine, if you donât believe me, then go. If you think Iâm lying then why are you still here?â He didnât believe that she didnât believe him. She wasnât stupid. He knew she wasnât.Â
âI just want to know why! Why have you been avoiding me?â
âI already told you the truth, so what do you want from me?â Kaz suddenly felt defensive. âI care about you, and people noticed. Rowell threatened you straight to my face, and I realized that if people thought that you meant anything to me, then theyâd come after you. Theyâd kill you to get to me, and that canât happen.âÂ
âSo, it was that easy then? You got scared that someone was going to come after me so you decided to just stop caring? Thatâs the stupidest thing Iâve ever heard!â
âThat is not what I said. What I said was that if they thought that you were important to me, they would come for you. I never said that meant I stopped caring.â Kaz huffed. âThis is the only way that I can be sure youâre safe.â
âDid it ever occur to you that I have a stake in this too?â She was letting the tears fall freely now. âI donât care who comes after me.â
âI canât lose you.â Kaz shook his head.Â
âYou donât have to.âÂ
âI canât guarantee that people wonât come for you. Iâm not sure if you noticed, but I havenât exactly made a good reputation my priority.â Kaz attempted a joke, but really it served more as a warning. A glimpse into what being close to him would entail, which would mean always looking over your shoulder.Â
âBelieve it or not, I have actually caught on to that partâŠâ She let out a soft chuckle.Â
He reached up, brushing a stray piece of hair out of her face. He took the opportunity to rest his gloved hand on her cheek. He felt his body tense. His hand fell. Flashes of the nightmare that heâd endured. Jordieâs cold grey skin. The smell of waterlogged rotten flesh. It was as if he was back in the harbor. Surrounded by nothing but death and decay.Â
She seemed to notice his ordeal. Concern flashed through her eyes. âAre you feeling alright, Kaz?â Heâd never told her about his brother. Heâd never told anyone, really. As far as he was concerned, Kaz Rietveld had died in that harbor, but that wasnât all true. If it had, he wouldnât be damn near hyperventilating because heâd touched her. It was stupid. He was stupid. He couldnât imagine what she was thinking. She probably thought heâd lost his mind.
âI think you need to rest,â she suggested. âIâll run downstairs and grab you some water, Iâll be right-âÂ
âNo.â His voice came out hoarse.Â
âKaz, you look like youâre about to pass out, I think you should drink something.âÂ
âI want you to stay.â He sounded needy like a child and he hated it, but he also meant every word. âPlease stay.â He grabbed her hand. Only this time, it was easier. He wasnât thinking about death and despair. He wasnât thinking about Jordie. He was thinking about her.Â

The Lost Princess - Part 1
Kaz Brekker x fem!reader
Synopsis: The old Queen Mother of Kerch's former royal family is offering a hefty reward to whoever returns her rumored-to-be-alive granddaughter to her. Kaz being Kaz hears about the reward and hatches an elaborate plot involving a fake princess. Reader is a lowly amnesiac orphan and escaped indenture who flees to Ketterdam where she gets tangled in Kaz Brekker's plot.
A/N: Hello friends!! Here is part one of a series I started writing a few years back but never published. It's inspired by the movie and musical Anastasia. I hope you all enjoy, and I hope it makes enough sense haha
Warnings: sickness, mentions of death, mentions of drowning, mentions of violence. pls let me know if I've missed anything
Word Count: 2056
..........
It was happening again.
You sat upright in the bed of your cheap lodgings, swinging your legs to the side and touching the floor. The threadbare rug was itchy against your toes as you took deep breaths, a desperate attempt at grounding yourself. Still, the dizziness did not subside. It came along every so often, never without the cryptic nightmares. There was always vertigo and memories of plunging into dark waters.
At least, you thought they must be memories. There was a significant gap in your mind from birth to the age of about ten, and the first thing you could remember was waking up on a fishing boat on the True Sea. The fishers handed you over to their boss, a wealthy merchant named Devisser, once you made port, and you were made to work for him in a fifteen-year indenture. You had worked as a scullery maid in that man's second home on the southern shores, but you managed to escape your indenture five years early, running off to Ketterdam.
Nowadays you were free to do whatever you pleased--if it was within budget, of course. You had precious little in your life, and you couldn't squander your money in the gambling dens of the city.Â
You had to be smart if you were to make it to Os Kervo. Another maid at the house had said that there was a better chance of smuggling yourself to Novyi Zem than to find a safe passage to Ravka, but you didn't let her sway you. You had to get to Os Kervo. It was difficult to explain, but you felt instinctively that someone was waiting there for you. In your dreams, the better and brighter ones where you could feel the warmth of arms around you, there was a voice that whispered, "I'll meet you there, my little tiger. We'll be together in Os Kervo."
The only trouble was how you could get there. You had no travel papers or identification, and it was difficult to obtain any--even fake ones--with such little money. It was a difficult position you were in.Â
So you went about your life, picking up odd jobs using fake names. Your name is already fake as it was. The surname, Vos, was given to you by one of the more kind fishers who pulled you from the water. He gathered a mound of blankets around you and sat with his arm around you, trying desperately to keep you warm. Sometimes you wondered about him, wondered whether he was still fishing for Devisser. Perhaps if the captain of that ship had not seen fit to hand you over to their boss the kind fisher would have taken you in. Life might have been better if you had been offered a chance at a family instead of an apron and a crushing daily workload.Â
Your feet carried you to the wardrobe in this shabby lodging room. You had to sweep a spider off your jacket before you slipped it on. The morning air was a nice reprieve against your warm face as you walked down the streets. Shops were opening, food vendors were starting the fire in their ovens; Ketterdam was waking up.
You meant to walk further than the Barrel, but you stopped as you saw the window of some sort of pawn shop. There was a dress in the window. It was the emerald green of a kind of fabric you had never owned but knew instinctively would be smooth to the touch, like a flat stone one might skip on the ocean. There was something so familiar about the short ruffles of the over-the-shoulder sleeves; perhaps you had seen a guest at the big house wearing something similar when you used to spy from the door to the servant's quarters.Â
There was no way you would be able to purchase such a beautiful gown, you barely had enough money to get by as it was, but you were drawn into the shop because of it. You had to spend some more time around it and the other beautiful items in the shop. You hadn't been around such lavish things since⊠well, never.
The bell above the shop door jangled, alerting a woman at the counter to your appearance. She smiled, but the sight struck you in the chest. As an amnesiac orphan, you learned early on that people saw you as weak, helpless, and naive. For your youth and lack of guidance, you were perceived as easy pickings, and people tried their tricks on you more often than you could count, especially here in Ketterdam. You'd learned to tell what was genuine and what was fake when you interacted with others, and the woman's smile was the first real smile you'd seen in a long time.Â
"A beautiful dress for a beautiful young lady," the woman said.
You shook your head with a pleasant enough smile. "I was just looking. I could never afford such a thing."
"And yet here you are in my shop." She followed your eyes to a case of assorted valuables. When she saw the dull music box you stared at she hummed. "Would you like to know a secret?" You turned to her "That music box is from the old palace. It belonged to the missing princess herself, I swear on Ghezen and the saints."
You pondered the validity of her words, keeping a level expression so as not to upset her with your doubt. Everything you heard about the dead royal family seemed like it happened a lifetime ago, and no amount of rumours about one of their daughters being alive somewhere would make it any less a ghost story.Â
Still, you smiled politely. Despite her pleasant expression, she was only trying to sell you something, something you would not need even if you could have it. It wasn't even the most eye-catching thing in the display, just a decrepit old music box of tarnished silver. The music probably didn't even play anymore.
"It's lovely," you lied, "though I don't believe I could afford it."
"I could give you a special deal. I like to think there's something in my shop for everyone. The music box deserves to go home with you."
"That's generous, but--truly--I cannot make a purchase."
She tilted her head at you. "What is it you want, my dear? You've come into my shop, looked around, and you have the nerve to refuse my generosity--what is holding you back?"
"I've already told you," you said, "I couldn't afford it."
"And if I gave something for free?"
You brushed her off. "That's a terrible business model."
"Perhaps. But I like you, little runaway that you are. You're a long way from home--you deserve something nice."
You felt your pulse quicken. She shouldn't have known that. You weren't on the list of runaway indentures, so the stadwatch wouldnât be looking for you. You breathed in before you could turn to her, balancing your composure with great care. Emotions were not useful in situations like this. "What brought you to that conclusion?"
"You keep your head down, which is normal in the Barrel, but you're not doing it out of habit, you're doing it out of fear. You must be hiding from something--from someone."
She was apt, you'd give her that. The trouble was figuring out the degree to which you could trust her. She could sell you back to Devisser in a second if she wanted to, but she could also be willing to help you. After all, she did say she liked you. You looked her in the eyes and then spoke.
"I'm trying to get to Ravka. The thing is, I don't have the money for travel papers, be they legal or illegal. I can't afford even that, and I could never afford anything in your shop." You straightened out, about to leave. "I'm sorry to have wasted your time--"
"Brekker can help you."
You stopped in your tracks.Â
âHe can get you to Ravka, no travel papers necessary.â
You faced her again, questioning, âWhere can I find this Brekker?â
âHe owns a club down the road from here. The sign has one of those annoying blackbirds on it.â
âA raven?â
âNo, a pesky crow.â She fiddled with a set of keys around her neck. âAnyways, he can help you on your way. I assure you.â
âHow much will this information cost me?â
âNothing, my dear. I hope you make it to Ravka.â
You thanked her, ducking your head as you left the shop. You kept a wary eye about you as you wove through the streets, finding your way back to your lodgings. There was little trust in such a wicked city as Ketterdam, specifically here in the barrel, and you were constantly looking out for any sign of danger. The shopkeeper wasnât dangerous, not from what you could tell, but you had to keep your wits. One false move and you could be sent back to Devisser.Â
You couldnât let that happen.
..........
Kaz stepped out from the back of the shop after the bell above the door rang out once more, signifying your departure. He was lucky to have been behind a particularly packed shelf furthest from the door, else you would have seen him and wouldnât have explained your plan to Eugenia, the shopkeeper. Eugenia, for her part, did well to nudge you in the direction of the Crow Club. Undoubtedly she would want some credit for that, he knew. And, just as he thought, she brought it up as soon as he reappeared.Â
"I've found your missing princess for you, Kaz," Eugenia smirked. "And how valuable she'll be for you."
"You didn't do anything for me, Eugenia. She'll be just as impossible as the others," he retorted.
He'd been auditioning young women to play the part of the missing princess for months now. Ever since he'd heard of a hefty reward posed by the old duchess and grandmother to the princess, he'd devised a plan, learning everything he could about the toppled royal family.
"I think she's the one. Do you know why?"
He kept his stare neutral, but the disapproval remained on his lips in permanence. Eugenia liked to speak as though she knew best, leading tourists and tramps into traps as she sold them tin under the guise that it was rare silver. Even wisdom offered by her would be false.
She continued. "She'll play the part--and she'll be damn good at it--because she's desperate. Desperation makes us do what we otherwise would not."
He tilted a brow at her. "What do you want?"
"Waive six months of my rent," she said. There was no way she thought that he would accept this deal. He didn't even have confirmation that you would find him or that you would be willing to go through with his masquerade. Eugenia was a fool.
"If she is a good fit for the princess, I will waive one month of your rent," he bargained.
"Hold on, she is going to make you a million Kruge--I deserve more than a month for that."
Kaz frowned at her, leaning into his cane. Who was she to make demands? "Firstly, there's no guarantee that she can do the job. Secondly, even if she is a good fit, I don't owe you anything. You decided to send her to me before you thought to broker a deal; I don't owe you a thing."Â
She thumbed at her ring of keys. Eugenia was upset with herself and with him, he could tell.Â
"If she can play the part," Kaz said, straightening out, "I am willing to waive three months of your rent on the condition that you supply me with whatever I might need from this shop free of cost."
"Whatever you need for the job, right? I can't just give you anything you want from now on."
He nodded. "Just for the job. Do we have a deal?"
"Deal."
Kaz left the shop without the rent that he'd initially come to collect, but with something much more valuable if he played his cards right. He'd only caught a glimpse of you, but he was inclined to believe what Eugenia said. Desperation makes us do what we otherwise would not, and you had sounded plenty desperate.

pairing: kaz brekker x fem!reader
summary: kaz is handsome. like, very handsome, and reader never realized its effect on her until nina pointed it out and jesper can't keep it a secret.
warnings: reader has a crush on kaz, kaz is in love with reader, they both don't acknowledge it until nina does for reader. it's all very awkward and it's not a happy ending, sorry, but hope y'all like it!!! Also this is more show-based, so sorry about that lovelies.
note: I saw this in a tiktok and had to write it down, excuse me.
Ketterdam was hot. The randomized rise in temperature was so common that the people of the city opted to not wear heavy clothing all year round, except for maybe the Bastard of the Barrel, for he loved dramatics.
Kaz Brekker was known for his dark heavy trench coat, dark vest, dark dress pants, and dark gloves. If there were any colors in his wore drop, it would only be silver and nothing else.
But that's okay because y/n liked him like this.
It was a busy day in the Crow Club. Customers were running in and out of the gambling shop all night, girls were running around serving tables and pouring drinks, and boys rounded up the dice tables and dragged the games for hours on end.
Jesper stood at the door, his beloved boyfriend keeping him company. He was supposed to keep watch, but he was talking to Wylan so that's a job undone. Inej wasn't anywhere in sight, and y/n knew that only meant that she was gathering information for their next heist. Nina was behind the bar, sugarcoating men into emptying their wallets at the deep cut of her dress and her charming grin.
Kaz had just made his first appearance for the night. His coat long gone, probably hung on the back of his office door. His black and silver vest tightly wrapped around his chest, one gloved hand holding onto his crow-headed cane while the other combs through his wet strands of matching black hair. He had just finished going through the paperwork of that day and decided to take a break to check on the pigeons on his tables, and his favorite Crow by the bar.
y/n sat and stared at him from the bar stool. She had the day off after getting injured during their last heist, but couldn't find anything useful to do at the Slat so she decided to head to the Crow Club and keep Nina company. She and Inej were the only good things that came with this place. And maybe the guy who runs the place. And maybe Jesper and his boyfriend.
He felt her eyes on him from the moment he stepped out of the shadows of the stairs leading to his office. He still couldn't understand how she could locate him so easily in a crowd, it was like the moment he steps into the same room as her, something shifts in the air and tells her that he was near, and she merely scans the place before landing on his dark figure. He'd be surprised at how easy it is to locate him.
She thought she should feel ashamed at how easily she gravitated toward him. How easy it was to find him and keep her eyes locked on him until he decided to disappear again. But as she downed another glass of gin or whiskey, she found that she truly couldn't care less.
A chuckle from across from her made her shift her gaze from Kaz to Nina, and she raised a questioning brow. "What?"
"You could at least try to be subtle."
Confused, y/n's brows furrowed as she crossed her arms together. "What do you mean?"
Nina rolled her blue orbs, then with the towel in hand pointed at their boss. "I mean Kaz. You could try to be subtle about ogling him like that."
Her jaw dropped, lips parted and her hand placed the glass on the table. "I don't ogle, wh- what? What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about the fact that your heart ran a hundred miles in a second, about the way your eyes lit up the moment you saw him, and how you bit your lip when he does that thing with his ridiculous hair." Nina shook her head, and y/n is left in shambles at this revelation.
Dumbfounded, she glanced back at Kaz Brekker in all of his glory. The white button-up with the sleeves rolled up only slightly, his gloves tightened around his wrists, and his black vest with silver etchings. He looked somewhat devilish in the golden light of the club but in a very good and delicious way.
"You're doing it again~," Nina said again, in a sing-song voice, and y/n's face turns completely red as she jerks away from him, as he's finally caught her staring, and glared harshly at the glass in her hands.
"Y/n!" Jesper's voice clashed into her mind as his hands grabbed onto the back of her shoulders, he plopped himself beside her while Wylan took the seat next to him. Jesper grinned at the girls and one of his legs came to rest on top of the other. "So, what are we talking about?"
Nina shrugged, and before y/n could attempt to send her a begging glance she parted her lips. "y/n's massively stupid crush on Kaz."
And y/n's face burns a deeper red.
"y/n has a crush on Kaz?" Inej jumped out of nowhere on the other side of y/n, making everyone at the table jump. "Saints! I hate it when you do that," Jesper whined as both he and Inej received shot glasses from Nina.
"I do not have a crush on Kaz!" y/n tried to claim, but Nina wriggled her brows at her. "Sure you do, and you have a crush on his hair most of all. She was frothing at the mouth when he ran a hand through it earlier."
"I was not!" y/n gasped as her friends laughed, Jesper cackled as both Inej and Wylan chuckled. Inej rested a hand on her friend's shoulder, "It's alright to like him, you know? He is the boss of the barrel."
"Shut up," y/n whined, trying very hard to bury her face in her cup. "I do not like him because he's the boss of the barrel. I do not like him at all."
"You don't like who?"
His voice reached them like the scratching of two stones against each other. It dawned on her like cold water on a hot day and it sent shivers down her spine. y/n's back shot up straight as she quickly downed the newest glass of booze down her throat in one gulp, and Nina grimaced because it was one of the stronger alcohols she was serving that night.
"Nothing. No one. Nada." y/n quickly muttered, whipping around to come face-to-face with the man of the hour. Somehow, he was a lot more handsome closer up. His defined cheekbones looked like the edges of a playing card, sharp enough to cut. His bitter coffee-brown eyes stared at her with wonder and curiosity, perfectly arched brows raised in question because he knows better than to believe her bullshit. And of course, she was bullshitting. His lips were set in a terminal scowl, but it seemed softer as he stared at her
For some reason, every sharp edge of him softened around her.
"Really?" He asked, still expecting an honest answer, but Jesper was trying so hard to not choke on his liquor, Inej's brows were nearly at her hairline, and Nina quickly excused herself with the excuse to serve more customers.
y/n was fucked.
He turned his head to his sharpshooter, and y/n sent him a quick glare. Jesper coughed a choke as he stared between Kaz and y/n, then sniffed. "Excuse me, I've got to go watch the door. Come on, Wylan." He tried to jump off his stool, but Kaz's cane shot up and forced him to a stop.
Kaz's brow was still up, and he tilted his head as he stared daggers into Jesper, because he knew he would crack, and y/n was going to be fucked.
Jesper stuttered, "I- Well- It's not really my place to say, now, is it?" For a split second, y/n thought he might let him go and question her instead, then she could make up whatever lie she's got and this can all be over, but Kas only smirked. "When was it ever your place to say anything about anything, Jesper? Fuss up."
The Zemini boy sighed, and he sent an apologetic glance to y/n, who was shaking her head at him aggressively. "You." He winced, "She said she didn't like you."
y/n knew that Kaz was good at masking his feelings. He could feel a hundred emotions at the same time and show absolutely nothing for it, but as her eyes locked on him, she could see that Jesper's words faltered him very slightly, then he was back to Dirtyhands.
He lowered his cane, and Jesper mouthed a 'sorry' to y/n, but only pressed her lips at him as he and Wylan left the scene.
"He doesn't mean that in an 'oh he's my boss and I don't like him so I'm going to go work for the Dime Lions' Way, believe me, he doesn't mean that." y/n tried to explain, then turned to face a grimacing Inej when she realized that she just dug herself a bigger hole.
Kaz rest both of his hands on the head of his cane, his posture completely relaxed, but he was screaming within his mind. "What does he mean then?" His voice came out harsher than he intended, but he wanted to know everything related to his y/n, and if she had her eyes set on someone, he'd like to know. To take out the competition of course.
y/n cringed at herself, "He meant it in a... romantic way? Like, 'I don't- have feelings... for you' way..." She tried, hanging on to every word like a lifeline, hoping beyond hope that he would see the underlying message, and for a moment she could swear there was a change in his expression, but then he was normal again and he hummed. "Good." He said, "That wouldn't be very professional of you, would it?"
Kaz wanted to burn down the world. And Jesper. And himself. Why did he insist on knowing? This was worse than knowing. Now he knew she doesn't have feelings for him, but she does? He wasn't a fool, but he was never really good at reading y/n.
She frowned, her shoulder slumped and a look of near relief washed over her. "Right. No, of course not."
y/n felt her heart sink, and she felt Inej's hand supporting her back, her thumb drawing comforting circles against the fabric of her clothes. She was disappointed that he missed her implied message, but also grateful because if he ever found out her feelings for him, this was not how she'd want him to know.
He sent her a single stiff nod, then his eyes shifted to Inej behind her. "What'd you find?"
And just like that, he was off with her. Inej murmurs the city's secrets to him and just eats it up. y/n turned back on her stool, coming face-to-face with Nina again, and held out her glass for another refill. Never aware of the way Kaz's gaze manages to find itself landing back on her all through the night.
