750,325
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Mainly Peaky Blinders, House of the Dragon and Masters of the Air, have written for the Inuyasha Fandom, one fic for Black Panther, game of thrones/a song of ice and fire, the Avatar cartoon series, wrote a one shot series for republic commando before i found out the writer is the jk rowling of star wars, tried a batman fanfic one time, did a one shot for pride and prejudice, did a saltburn crackfic and removed from hiatus a Silmarillion and Rings of Power fic
4. Top 5 fics by kudos
Someone will remember us :1261
Between the shadow and the soul: 623
All is bliss (in the court of aemma the great):368
You read me poetry while i wash the dishes: 229
Nothing more difficult than love: 222
5. Do you respond to comments?
Yes, will take between 5 seconds or 5 days lol
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
The Knife, a one shot/epilogue for Incantatrice where Eva plans her and Luca's murder suicide after the events of the fic
7. What’s a fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Completed on ao3, Misao of the Fire Nation where Misao and Iroh just elope instead of having the wedding their families wanted. Happiest because the fic itself was pretty low stakes
Between the shadow and the soul is a close second because it ends with Eva arriving in Veracruz with her exile finally over and the series as well. And its a good pay off after a lifetime of drama
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Yep
9. Do you write smut?
When the stars and planets align

16. What are your writing strengths?
Character building!
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Grammer! Descriptions!
18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
Depends. Like i have written a fic where the dialogue is entirely in spanish and then made a seperate fic with it English because i was not gonna put translations in the og fic.
I think if it doesn't detract from the story, it should be fine, and your story should be fine if the readers skip it.(i do when its a language i can't speak or read)
19. First fandom you wrote in?
*sophia petrillo voice*: picture this, a bored eighth grader discovers quotev in keyboarding class after reading the outsiders and seen Patrick Swayze as Darry Curtis. It was actually a Sodapop Curtis x oc fic for a friend because they thought he was the hotter brother.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
Shock and Delight, the hotd bridgerton inspired aemma x aemond fic

Note
To my knowledge the first time Pietro and Monet met was in Xfactor investigations post Son of M where Monet was an adult and had at various points relationships with Jamie Madrox, Darwin and Guildo and much later on post this series she has a relationship with Sabertooth infamously. All men older than Pietro, who might probably be the partner closest to her age since she dated Synch (and maybe sunspot as I saw a tweet saying that was briefly a thing but haven't been able to find anything else on it). Those relationships rarely if ever get brought up when it comes into age gap discourse.
Looking at her relationships with those other men, there is a lot to be said about the way the story framed those relationships and how that was problematic. However, I don't really think the age differences with those partners was the primary problem as she was an adult and those men were not taking advantage over her or had power over her the way Magneto did Rouge or Warren did Paige for example. The former pairing definitely doesn't get the same level of scrutiny or "age gap discourse" as Pietro/Monet does despite Pietro and Monet actually being within the same peer group in modern comics. The way Xfactor framed Monet, the one person of colour in the group as a sexual being and how Guildo felt entitled to her and how she's considered "more mature and experienced" then say Theresa who I'm sure is older than her is problematic because it speaks to the sexualisation of women of colour (a treatment many WoC including Wanda) have been subjected too. Monet definitely hasn't had the best treatment in the past but from what I've seen of the modern day depictions of the female characters it's gotten a lot better. But people being upset at these past depictions and maybe taking them out on the relationship between Monet and Pietro is maybe somewhat understandable but considering it's never brought up by those fans I think that's just me making assumptions.
A problem with this age gap discourse as well is that it's definitely somewhat infantalising the female character and undermining their sexual agency.
With the sliding scale, where do we draw the line with comics in particular - Jericho seems to be a couple of years older than Wanda, should that not have happened? Are people not allowed to ship Pietro or Namor who he did meet as a teenager under the context that Daddy Mags was trying to pimp out Wanda to Namor? Similarly is WandaVision problematic because vision is technically much younger than Wanda (despite mentally being an adult) lol
People bring up Pietro having Luna around the same time Monet was introduced as a teenager, ignoring that Luna was a baby and a toddler and still to this day doesn't look like she's hit puberty with the sliding timescale. Cannonically around the time Pietro and Monet met Luna was six and Pietro cannonically married and had child very young so they both would have been in their twenties when they met for the first time. The Monet we were introduced to in Gen X was also 16 because she was a fusion of her two little sisters (8 at the time) who also confusiny don't seem to have aged beyond their early teens despite their sister being aged up.
Ultimately they're both adults, who met as adults and are on equal terms. It's fine not to like it cause it's not your thing or you feel the character should be with other people. You don't need a moral reason not to like it and focusing on an age gap when the sliding timescale as confusing as it is, somewhat of a moot point.
Honestly I'm surprised marvel are actually trying to develop a couple beyond it's initial run. I think it's a fun dynamic and has a lot of story potential but that's just me haha. Let things cook basically.
To go on a tangent I've really appriciated how a lot of the recent comics I've read, especially the scarlet witch ones are from the female gaze. Wanda is beautiful and stunning but always viewed with respect. Darcy makes comments expressing attraction to Quicksilver and Joseph and it's not blinked at. Sex isnt really implied until Pietro/Monet show up and in those scenes Monet is fully dressed or more dressed than Pietro and framed differently to him. The scene from the last issue when Darcy is dropped in their room, Monet is fully clothed and looking radiant while Pietro seems to be by all accounts naked unless hes got very low resting boxers on under that sheet. None of it is particularly vulger or glorified it's just an amusingly pleasant subversion to have that dynamic flipped. Women being drawn respectfully and still being beautiful and alluring is always a plus.
Ive been loving the fact Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch show that Monet and Pietro are still together (and potentially living together) however, there is a small vocal part of the Xfandom arguing the paring is wrong because of an "age gap" between the two. Is that... actually a thing? Especially with the sliding timescale?
Yeah, I've been seeing that online, and if I'm being honest, I don't think it hold water-- especially not since SOME of those people are still pulling for Pietro/Namor. Now, that's an age gap.
Pietro is about the same age as all of the original X-Men. Within the context of X-Men comics, you can assume that Monet is notably younger than the original team because she was introduced as part of the third generation of mutant students.
However, because of the sliding timescale, a lot of the student characters from the 80s and 90s have all fallen into the same twenty-something age group. And now, a lot the 2000s students are young adults too, and specifically, can drink. So if we assume that those kids are all, like, twenty-one, Monet's probably in her early to mid-twenties
In the timeline that was established in HoxPoX, it's only been ten years since the original team was founded, so none of these people are older than thirty. I think that timeline was a little too condensed, but at max, they're not older than thirty-five.
So, no matter how you slice it, they're both adults, and they're not more than ten years apart, and Monet is not, like, college a girl or anything. But comic ages aren't real-- it's all relative. It would be different if they had known each other when Monet was still a teenager, or if Pietro had ever been positioned against Gen X cast as their elder, but I don't think either of those things is true. So, relatively, their age gap doesn't feel significant. It's the same with Wanda and Jericho-- know, logically, that he's older than her, but not in any way that feels material or relevant.

like a lazy ocean hugs the shore (darcy x namor)
A/N: this is a remix/redux of far beyond a star/near beyond the moon. This is for (and because of) @phoenix-173.
Darcy wasn’t really sure how she felt about moving to New York, specifically to Stark Tower. It wasn’t that she didn’t like cities, she loved them. It wasn’t even the proximity to Avengers and their related mayhem. She’d long since grown used to dealing with super-powered beings and their equally super-powered egos. No, the issue was the proximity to the ocean.
It didn’t make the dreams worse, but it did make them more frequent.
London was bad enough, but she had known London would be nothing more than a pit stop, a temporary stay. Darcy had hoped thought that Jane’s next posting would be somewhere more like New Mexico. Landlocked. She needed the break from the dreams and the never-ending call that echoed through them. The call that was made of ocean waves and a man’s voice, inextricably linked.
He’d spoken to her in dreams since her sixteenth birthday. Some kids got cars, Darcy got Namor, the King of Atlantis.
Her mother had sat her down three days prior, all fluttering hands and shifting eyes, unable to even look at her child when she laid out the bad news. Great-grandma Dorma had been Atlantean royalty, betrothed to marry the prince of the waters. There had been a civil war, years of fighting, during which she had explored further and further afield until she came upon humans and, like in all the best fairytales, Dorma fell in love.
“I’ve seen this movie,” teenage Darcy had snarked. “I liked it better with the singing crab.”
Delilah rolled her eyes extravagantly and huffed. “Honestly, Darcy, life isn’t all about men. Dorma fell in love with human culture. She loved our music and our dances, our food and our cities. She didn’t want to be a queen, she wanted to live. So she went to a sea witch.”
Darcy mimed a yawn.
Delilah’s eyes flashed. “Fine,” she said, “be a pest. The worse you are the easier it’ll be for you to convinced Him to give up on you.”
“What are you talking about?”
“The betrothal contract was signed in blood and magic, because of that Dorma couldn’t entirely get rid of it, it had to be fulfilled somehow. The King of Atlantis is owed a wife. She took the parts of her that were most strongly tied to that debt and left them in the magic’s keeping. They can only be claimed by one of her daughters, of daughters’ daughters - and so on. Your grandmother was already seeing your grandfather when she turned sixteen, she only had the dreams for a few days. I had them for two years.”
“Dreams?”
Her mother sighed and leaned back in her chair, looking up to stare at the ceiling. Her fingers set up a restless tapping, accompanied by the tinkle of her bangles shifting on her wrist. “His name is Namor,” she said after a moment. “He will tell you... all sorts of things.” She looked down again at Darcy, lips pursed. “I don’t know whether it’s better to warn you more or let it ride. Don’t agree to anything he offers. He’s tricky.”
“Mom, you can’t be serious,” she said.
“You’ll see,” Delilah said grimly. She shook her head, looking frustrated with herself, “Grandma explained it better. I tried.”
You didn’t try very hard, Darcy thought.
That night, she dreamt of drifting, a fathomless amount of time spent hanging in a formless space. It wasn’t pitch-black, but an ever-shifting cloud of darkness with just enough variation that she could track motion. Time passed, and eventually she felt something push up against her, closer than whatever force kept her afloat in this void. It wrapped around her like a blanket and then it made a sound sort of like a contented sigh.
Daughter of Dorma, a voice sighed. I have been waiting.
It was strange, as the voice spoke it went from a sense to actual words, from meaning she felt to sounds she heard. The man, the voice sounded male, had a warm tenor, the kind that resonated a little. It was a smooth, controlled voice, and the way he spoke was very deliberate, as if his words were chosen carefully and for maximum impact.
“My mother’s name is Delilah,” she said after a moment.
“Darcy, daughter of Delilah, daughter of Diana, daughter of Dorma. You are part of an unbroken chain, a lineage of women who forsook their duty.”
It was just insulting enough to make her grit her teeth. She bit back her first (colorful) response and instead remained silent, waiting.
He made a a soft sound of interest. “You are not what I expected from a daughter of Delilah,” he said after a moment.
Darcy smirked at the darkness around her because subverting expectations was her raison d’etre and that little trait had been inherited on both sides. “So, is this the part where you ask me to marry you and pull a reverse Little Mermaid?” she asked, her tone making it explicitly clear what she thought of that.
“No, this is the part where you wake up.”
He had woken her forty minutes before her alarm was due to go off. She wasn’t sure if it was deliberate or not, but - “He seems like an asshole,” was the first thing she said to her mother that morning.
Delilah looked relieved. “Well, if we’re lucky, you’ll only have to deal with him for a few years. Just... be careful.”
“King, huh? We elect our officials.”
“And how does that work out for you?”
“You know I’m not legally an adult, right?”
“If you were representative of the adults of humankind, I would consider waging war on the surface for their own good.”
“...go bite a fish.”
“So this ‘prom’ is a celebratory ball?”
“Kind of but not really.”
“A rite of passage?”
“Kind of?”
“Does it involve a feat of bravery? Test of skills?”
“...eh, close enough.”
“So you have visited the surface!”
“It has been decades, but yes.”
“Do anything interesting? Meet anyone famous?”
“There was a man, he was called ‘Captain America.’ I believe he achieved some notoriety among your kind. He was... a friend.”
“Shut up.”
“Excuse me?”
“Shut up, you did not meet Captain America!”
“Met and fought with, on multiple occasions.”
“Wow. Also, god, you’re old.”
“Who pissed in your Cheerios?”
“...you choose these idioms merely to vex me.”
“Yeah, and you’re dodging the question.”
“I have a counsellor who may be planning a coup.”
“Yikes, that sounds bad.”
“It will be. For him.”
“He was not worthy of you.”
“Yeah. I get that. Still sucks.”
“...if he finds his way to the waters, it will not go well for him.”
“I appreciate the thought but please don’t drown my ex-boyfriend.”
“Hmph.”
“Namor.”
“As a favor to you, he may keep his wretched hide intact.”
“You’re a gentleman and a scholar.” Darcy made a mental note to avoid complaining about any other romantic entanglements. For their sake.
“So... I turn eighteen tomorrow.”
“As it is a birthday of some significance to your people, I wish you well.”
“Yeah, thanks. I was wondering... are you going to go away?”
“Your pardon?”
“You stopped bugging my mom when she turned eighteen, isn’t that the cut-off? The make-or-break day?”
“You thought-” soft laughter emanated from the darkness and Darcy got the vague sense of being hugged combined with gentle amusement. “Your mother had proven she was ill-suited for rule within a few months of our introduction. I continued to speak with her at the behest of my council. We have been many years without an heir, and at that time we were experiencing a period of unrest.”
“In other words-”
“No, I do not intend to sever our connection."
Her mother relaxed after her birthday. There was a weight that Darcy hadn’t noticed that seemed to disappear. She didn’t have the heart to tell her mother that the dreams - that Namor - never went away. The dreams remained as they always had: inconsistent, coming and going on a schedule she never fully understood. They were, at the same time, one of the only constants in her life.
“My dad died a week ago.” There was silence and a vague impression of waiting. Darcy’s words stuttered as if her breathing was ragged, though she’d long since given up trying to understand how speech worked in this dream space: “I didn’t really know him that well, so it’s not that I’m sad about actually losing someone close to me. I think - I think I’m sad about losing the idea of him.”
“A loss is a loss, whether you mourn the man or the father he might have been, you still mourn.”
“Yeah, I guess. Have you...? Sorry, stupid question, I know you’ve seen war.”
This time the pause was different, almost hesitant, though Darcy was reluctant to use that word to describe any aspect of Namor. “Your foremother...,” he said after a moment, “when she left for the surface I was... angry. I knew her as a friend and I...perhaps took her presence for granted. Once I was over my anger I found I did not miss her, I missed the reassurance she brought.”
“You missed the future queen, not the woman who was supposed to be queen.”
“Yes.”
“Dude, you realize that’s probably part of the reason she left, right?”
“I had, yes. Do not call me ‘dude.’”
“The salmon was... okay.”
“What else did you try?”
“Tuna and something called ‘white fish.’”
“Your thoughts?”
“It was good. I’d eat it again.” He didn’t say anything, but he emanated ‘I told you so’ so strongly that if she could have, she would have kicked him. “Someday you have to try a burger, fair is fair.”
“We shall see.”
“I’m changing my major again.” She got an impression of vague curiosity and interest. “To political science.” The interest sharpened. “Don’t get all weird about it, there’re some really good professors here and I want to take advantage. I’m going to keep the religious studies as a minor.”
“To go with your philosophy minor.”
“...and the culture studies minor. The system maxes at three.” There was a strong impression of satisfaction that made Darcy bristle. “Stop that,” she said. “I told you not to get all weird about it! I’m just studying what interests me.”
“What interests you interests me,” he all but purred. Then, before she could retort, “Will this extend the duration of your studies further?”
“Yeah, another year. My dad left enough money that I can swing it, barely.”
“If that becomes an issue, know that what treasures I have are at your disposal. Your education is important.”
“...thanks. That offer sounds like a fish with a hook in it.”
“Another idiom? How quaint.”
“You know, I realized, you’re probably my best friend.”
“Good.”
“Really?”
“Yes, this pleases me.”
“Am I your best friend?”
“You are my closest confidant.”
“You’re being cagey.”
“’Friend’ is, perhaps, not the word I would choose, no.”
“What would you-” she woke up scowling. Cagey bastard.
“It just seems a little... extreme?”
“You would have me be lenient.”
“Well, yes. It sounds like it was a first offense and the evidence you’ve described is mainly hearsay. I mean, obviously I don’t know anywhere near as much as you do about the parties involved, but as an impartial-”
“You have made your point.”
“And the guard who oversaw the trade? What’s going to happen to him?”
“I had not decided, you have thoughts?”
“Do I ever... Um. Is this helpful? You were just venting, I didn’t mean to derail you, I just wanted to be a shoulder.”
“Idioms,” he sighed. “You have a different perspective. I may not always agree, but I benefit from your words, if only as another view of the problem. You have, as you have said, no horse in the race. It is...refreshing.”
“Aw, now who’s using idioms?”
“It’s been almost a month.”
“I know.”
“It’s - we’ve never gone that long without-”
“I know,” he said tersely.
“Did something... happen?”
“You are too far.”
“I didn’t know that was even possible.”
“Neither did I.”
“...I’ve missed you,” she admitted.
“And I, you,” he said, and she felt warmth blossom from without and within.
“Something has happened.”
“Understatement.”
“What happened, Darcy?”
She gathered herself, anticipating his reaction. “So,” she started cheerfully, “you remember that internship?”
“Yes. You are still in the desert,” he said, words clipped.
“I... yeah. You can tell?”
“Yes.”
“Anyways... I met a god? His name was Thor. He fell from the sky and the whole town nearly got destroyed and my boss’s work was stolen and there were government agents everywhere - it was nuts!”
“You were in danger, why?”
“Well, I mean, everyone was in danger, not just me specifically.”
“You did not go on the battlefield?”
“...Technically-”
“How much longer?”
“What?”
“Your internship, its duration and the fulfillment of your degree requirements. How much longer?”
“The internship runs through the end of May, then I’m all done.”
“And what do you intend to do at that time?”
“I’m not... I might stay on with Jane,” she said in a rush.
“Why?”
“Well... her work is interesting. I’m - I feel useful here.” She snorted. “Plus, it’s not like I’ve gotten any better offers, so-” Her words cut off there as she felt something. It was like pressure hitting peak and then suddenly she was being inundated with feelings.
“No better offers?” Namor inquired silkily, but behind his words was a wealth of incredulity and anger and regret and other feelings, less clear, muddied by the overwhelming frustration that was at the forefront.
Darcy was left reeling. “I-”
“You would be queen,” he said softly but intensely. The emotions she’d been sensing cut off with all of the suddenness of a switch being flipped. It was a relief, his words alone were drenched in so much feeling she was dizzy with it. “You could never be bored, not with all the oceans to explore, all the many peoples you would find, the new things to learn. You would be eminently useful, as a council member, ruling at my side. You are the partner I was promised. This offer has been waiting for you for years, you have not been ready to take it.”
“But that’s - I’m not-” She felt shaky, jittery, too much going through her mind but too little sticking around long enough to develop into coherent thought. “Queen and wife,” she said at last, quietly. “I don’t know - do you even care for me, I mean, in that way?”
There was a crystal clear moment of such perfect shock and disbelief that she started to try and wake herself up to avoid potential embarrassment. She felt him reach out to her retreating consciousness and grab hold, keeping her cradled in the warm and dark of their private dream space. Then he opened the floodgates and Darcy could feel every single thing he felt for her: pride so strong it made her blush, fondness saturating every action and word, a strain of tenderness kept well-hidden, though not so well as the desire and abject want that had her shivering in reaction.
“Such confessions as you ask of me are best delivered in person, where more than our minds can meet. I would have you, as wife and queen, as the daughter of Dorma and a promise fulfilled, but more importantly as your self. I cherish you, and my only regret in our interactions is that I have not made that more clear.”
He released his hold on her then and let her flee to wakefulness with his words resounding in her mind and heart like a bell struck. From that moment, everything changed. From that moment, it wasn’t a question of if, but when.
“Are you scared of the ocean?” Jane asked her once, just after the move to New York. “You always stare at the water but you never go near it.”
“Not scared, exactly,” Darcy hedged. “I just have a healthy respect for the water and all its creatures. It’d be way too easy to get pulled under, and there are all sorts of currents we can’t see. I’ll steer clear.
It was the middle of the day, but she could have sworn she heard the echo of masculine laughter.
“Remember that conversation, all those months ago, about the ocean and how I don’t mess with it?” Darcy asked, eyes shut as she tried to ignore the sway of the sinking boat beneath her feet.
“Uh-huh,” Jane said. "I would like to take this moment to say that your concerns about currents was valid and I am now equally concerned.”
“Probably not equally,” she muttered. “This is such bullshit, though. I mean, what are the odds that the baddie of the week with a mad-on for Thor would live in a freaking houseboat?”
“Slim to none.”
“But the whole water thing. God, he’s never going to let me live this down,” Darcy said, now edging up onto a cot as best she could considering her arms were shackled to the wall. “I’ve been bleeding into the water for at least a minute or two. Since whenever the water reached us. Not enough that I’m worried about sharks, but enough.”
“Enough for what?” Jane asked cautiously.
As if on queue, there was a loud crunching noise and then a man burst through one side of the room, bringing with him a deluge of water.
“Hi, honey,” Darcy called with a quavering sort of bravado. He was here, in the waking world and not in her dream. The reality of him, the intensity of his presence, the intelligence in his face, the physicality on display, was overwhelming. “You miss me?”
“You are in danger, again,” he snarled, taking the room in at a glance before stalking over to Darcy and unceremoniously ripping her chains off the wall. He reached out and gently ran his fingers over her skull, scowling when he reached the bleeding bump on her head, before cupping her cheek.
She shivered under his touch and was momentarily grateful that her pupils were already dilated from the dim interior. The chill would camouflage any other obvious reactions to his presence. He was both familiar and un, every part of his person matched up with the voice that had lived in her head for over a decade. There were new things to catalogue, though: physical tells she hadn’t had access to in the dream space, reactions he could no longer hide.
“I would have waited for you to come to me,” he said.
“I know.”
“But now-”
“I know,” she said. “And we can talk about it in a minute, but first can you get Janie and me out of here?”
Namor turned to Jane, eyes narrowed. “This is the scientist.”
“Glare later, help now,” she said firmly, barely restraining the urge to lean against him and borrow some of his equilibrium.
He pursed his lips, frowning and gently guided Darcy along beside him until he reached Jane and could rip her chains off the wall as well. He removed the manacles at her wrists, tearing the metal away as if it was tissue paper. Once freed, he wrapped an arm around each woman, Darcy nearly plastered to his side while Jane was held much less close, and pulled them towards the hole he’d made in the hull.
“Deep breath, Janie!” Darcy shouted just before they hit the water.
They reached the beach in mere moments, nowhere near long enough for Darcy, who had never been in the ocean before. Darcy, who had never even been swimming before. Darcy, who had not realized that the peaceful drifting she had experienced in the dream space was the barest echo of the true wonder of being cradled and kept by the ocean.
Jane staggered onto the sand and flopped down, gasping for air, while Darcy stood knee-deep in the waves. Part of her, a large part, wanted to dive back in head first. The rest of her remembered things like friends, family, responsibilities, and not becoming a statistic. It helped that Namor’s arm was still wrapped around her waist, supporting her and providing, ironically enough, a grounding presence. Being in his arms now was strikingly similar to the feel of the dream space, but more immediate, their contact set off sparks enough that she wondered if her hair would stand on end if it was dry.
“So, about that confession-”
He tangled his fingers in her wet hair and tilted her face up to his own, pressing his lips to hers. It was surprisingly gentle for the moment, sweet and soft and over far too quickly. Her eyes fluttered open afterwards to find his face inches from hers.
“You are each of the things I wanted and everything I never thought to ask for,” he murmured into the space between them. “If anything were to happen to you, I would take a consort out of necessity, but the throne I built for you would remain empty till the end of my reign. I love you, Darcy.”
And everything inside of Darcy said yes.
A second after that, her skin started to glow. It grew brighter and brighter until she shut her eyes and buried her face against Namor’s chest. The light was accompanied by a tingling coolness that started at her extremities and coursed to her center before echoing back to the bounds of her skin. This happened over and over till every part of her seemed to be ringing. Then it cut off so suddenly and jarringly that she might have fallen without Namor to hold her up.
Darcy blinked, the world seemed slightly... different. “What the fuck was that?”
“That was a promise fulfilled,” he said, half joyful and half triumphant.

Pairing: Darcy Lewis/Namor the Submariner For: @themusingofagothicsoul Prompt: Darcy is a diplomat for Atlantis and the US AU
Namor couldn't help but notice the profile she cut.
Darcy Lewis was one good looking woman.
She was standing in the window, facing out towards the ocean where Atlantis lay while clicking her pen repeatedly. He was starting to think she did this solely to annoy him. “So are you coming back with me to New York or not?” she asked, eyeing him suspiciously.
He smirked, because he was. But he definitely didn’t want to tell her that right now. The tempting thought of watching her dangle would be too much fun.

For the week of 15 July 2019
Quick Bits:
Age of X-Man: Omega #1 concludes the event with this finale one-shot from Zac Thompson, Lonnie Nadler, Simone Buonfantino, Tríona Farrell, and Clayton Cowles. It’s a confrontation between many of the groups within this world and X-Man as they discover the nature of the world and discuss some philosophical concepts of conflict and identity.
| Published by Marvel
Aquaman #50 begins “Amnesty” from Kelly Sue DeConnick, Robson Rocha, Eduardo Pansica, Daniel Henriques, Julio Ferreira, Sunny Gho, and Clayton Cowles. It’s damn good. Arthur returns home here and there’s a reintegration of old supporting cast members, Wonder Woman, and further information about what’s going on in Atlantis. Also the set up for an interesting story possibly further down the line. Great art from Rocha, Pansica, Henriques, Ferreira, and Gho.
| Published by DC Comics
Assassin Nation #5 is the end to what has been a fun and humorous action-packed series from Kyle Starks, Erica Henderson, and Deron Bennett. More great action with some surprises along the way.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Batman #75 begins “City of Bane” from Tom King, Tony S. Daniel, Mitch Gerads, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles. It sets up a new status quo in Gotham with Bane at the helm and a bizarre slotting of various villains into traditional roles.
| Published by DC Comics
Black Badge #12 concludes this series with one last mission from the combined forces of all of colour badges, showing us how a coordinated effort really should have taken place before the groups’ purpose was co-opted. This has been a great series from Matt Kindt, Tyler Jenkins, Hilary Jenkins, and Jim Campbell.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Black Science #41 sets up an interesting and somewhat surprising new reality after last issue. I kind of expect that we’ll see another big twist as we head towards the finale in the next two issues. Rick Remender, Matteo Scalera, Moreno Dinisio, and Rus Wooton give us an interesting look at “paradise” this issue.
| Published by Image / Giant Generator
Blade Runner 2019 #1 begins a new time period and introduces a new Blade Runner in this alt-present tale from Michael Green, Mike Johnson, Andres Guinaldo, Marco Lesko, and Jim Campbell. Ash is an interesting character and this interpretation of the mythos is wonderful. Also, the artwork from Guinaldo and Lesko perfectly fits this neon apocalypse world.
| Published by Titan
Bloodborne #13 begins the next arc, “The Veil, Torn Asunder”, as an unnamed veteran searches through the madness of Yarnham and beyond. Beautiful artwork from Piotr Kowalski and Brad Simpson, really bringing the existential horrors to life.
| Published by Titan
Daredevil #8 goes in a very interesting direction as Matt accepts a dinner invitation from the married bookseller he keeps flirting with, leading to an assassination attempt and captivating dinner conversation about rules and responsibility. Chip Zdarsky, Lalit Kumar Sharma, Jay Leisten, Java Tartaglia, and Clayton Cowles are really delivering an interesting story here.
| Published by Marvel
Excellence #3 delves into some of the details of how the Aegis deals with rogue magic users. Brandon Thomas, Khary Randolph, Emilio Lopez, and Deron Bennett are doing some very interesting world and character building here.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Fairlady #4 is another great issue. The humour that Brian Schirmer provides in the dialogue is wonderful. This one dives into the mystery of mystery novel missing its final page and there’s one hell of an ending.
| Published by Image
Ghost Tree #4 concludes this excellent series from Bobby Curnow, Simon Gane, Ian Herring, Becka Kinzie, and Chris Mowry. There are a lot of goodbyes in this issue, some pleasant, some not, and some heartrending choices and consequences. Very well done.
| Published by IDW
Gideon Falls #15 checks in with Father Fred’s nightmares. The different time periods and streams, and their crossings-over at this point, are fascinating, even as things become even more chaotic and horrifying. Gorgeous art from Andrea Sorrentino and Dave Stewart.
| Published by Image
Immortal Hulk #21 has gorgeous guest art from Ryan Bodenheim as we get a story filling in this past of Fortean and a dangerous change in the present. Al Ewing also brings forward some of the recurring subtext of form and substance through the Bible and Kabbalah to give a deeper understanding of some of the themes here.
| Published by Marvel
Infinite Dark #8 brings an end to the second arc, with a revelation of the nightmarish creatures trying to destroy the station and a choice for how to proceed with the potential survival or annihilation of the remaining human race. Wonderful work from Ryan Cady, Andrea Mutti, K. Michael Russel, and Troy Peteri.
| Published by Image / Top Cow
Invaders #7 begins a new arc, “Dead in the Water”, dealing with the fallout of Atlantis’ assault on the surface. There are some more hints of Namor’s problems, the return of another Invader, and hints at some nefarious things on the horizon. I love the introduction of Tony Stark into the mess in the present, adding another conflict to deal with. Chip Zdarsky, Carlos Magno, Butch Guice, Alex Guimarães, and Travis Lanham continue to deliver some solid storytelling here.
| Published by Marvel
Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Sirens #4 features an interpretation of the myth of Lorelei by Aud Koch (with letters from Jim Campbell). It’s wonderfully told, with beautiful, magical artwork.
| Published by Boom Entertainment / Archaia
Justice League #28 concludes “Apex Predator” from James Tynion IV, Javier Fernandez, Daniel Sampere, Juan Albarran, Hi-Fi, and Tom Napolitano. This one’s basically integral to the core “Year of the Villain” story as Lex gives his offer to J’onn.
| Published by DC Comics
The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #5 picks up some of the pieces for the remaining few of Toyo’s forces, as they try to make a plan for what’s to come next. It should be interesting to see what the next step is in the finale. Gorgeous artwork from CAFU, Kano, and Andrew Dalhouse.
| Published by Valiant
Little Bird #5 brings this ambitious and unique story from Darcy Van Poelgeest, Ian Bertram, Matt Hollingsworth, and Aditya Bidikar to an end. The personal nature of this story as Little Bird comes to terms with her family has been a very enthralling element in this fight for freedom, and the sacrifices that one makes. Stunning artwork from Bertram and Hollingsworth.
| Published by Image
Loki #1 is an entertaining beginning to this new series spinning out of War of the Realms from Daniel Kibblesmith, Oscar Bazaldua, David Curiel, and Clayton Cowles. It dives in to Loki’s new role as King of Jotunheim and how he’s humorously approaching his duties. There’s a nice set-up for something coming that’s dismissed as a trick.
| Published by Marvel
Outpost Zero #11 reveals the discovery of life outside of the outpost, which leads to an unexpected reaction and sign of more conspiracies to keep the entire populace in the dark. Sean Kelly McKeever has been seeding little hints that something not right has been going on for a long time within the colony and there is more evidence of it here.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Pearl #11 sets us up for the end as Pearl returns to San Francisco to take care of the Endo Twins. Also, a game changer of a cliffhanger. Love the double page spreads from Michael Gaydos.
| Published by DC Comics / Jinxworld
Promethee 13:13 #1 is a digital-original prequel to Christophe Bec’s Promethee series from Andy Diggle, Shawn Martinbrough, Dave Stewart, and Simon Bowland. You don’t need to have read the original to follow this, but I still highly recommend it. This is an interesting starting point, with even more of a conspiratorial/espionage feel than the sci-fi of the main series. It’s good and I’m very interested to see where this goes.
| Published by Delcourt / Soleil
Ragnarok: The Breaking of Helheim #1 is a welcome return of Walter Simonson’s new take on Thor and Norse Mythology, pushing the story in new directions as Thor gains a vision of the end from his father and sets out for Hel. Simonson, Laura Martin, and John Workman work together as a seamless team here delivering a wonderful next chapter to the story. For those new to this series, there’s also a rather nice Q&A section that helps with some of the details.
| Published by IDW
Resonant #1 is an intriguing debut from David Andry, Alejandro Aragon, Jason Wordie, and Deron Bennett. This first issue sets up a different, very interesting post-apocalyptic world that we’re kind of uncertain of, but with the core of a single father trying to protect his children. The art from Aragon and Wordie is incredible.
| Published by Vault
Road of Bones #3 goes even harder into the brutal horror of three men trying to survive without any resources in a harsh landscape devoid of life. Rich Douek, Alex Cormack, and Justin Birch elevate the terror nicely this issue.
| Published by IDW
Rumble #14 unleashes the Last Knight of the Scourge Knights upon the world, bringing with him death through oblivion. John Arcudi, David Rubín, Dave Stewart, and Joe Sabino are definitely raising the stakes here, especially with Rathraq distracted by a personal conflict.
| Published by Image
Sera and the Royal Stars #1 is a fantastic debut of this fantasy series from Jon Tsuei, Audrey Mok, Raul Angulo, and Jim Campbell. It draws on Persian history and folklore as Sera is called upon by Mitra to fulfill a quest to prevent the end of everyone.
| Published by Vault
Silver Surfer: Black #2 continues to build the mythology around Knull. I love this blend of the seed from Venom with what’s been going on in the cosmic side from Guardians of the Galaxy, Donny Cates is doing a great job of reinforcing an evolving shared universe feel. Also, the art from Tradd Moore and Dave Stewart is phenomenal.
| Published by Marvel
Sonata #2 unveils some more mysteries about the planet, including some incredible monsters out to kill and eat everyone. The art from Brian Haberlin and Geirrod Van Dyke is very nice.
| Published by Image / Shadowline
Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #1 is a fun debut from Matt Fraction, Steve Lieber, Nathan Fairbairn, and Clayton Cowles that brings back a lot of the ridiculousness of the old Jimmy Olsen stories, seeing Jimmy in bizarre and humorous predicaments. There’s also an interesting exploration of Jimmy’s family’s history in Metropolis. And wonderful artwork from Lieber and Fairbairn.
| Published by DC Comics
Usagi Yojimbo #2 continues “Bunraku” as the investigation into the puppets continues. The supernatural aspect that Stan Sakai is bringing to this lead off arc for the new volume is engrossing and the colour from Tom Luth is growing on me.
| Published by IDW
Vampirella #1 is kind of a weird start (excepting the zero issue) to this new volume from Christopher Priest, Ergün Gündüz, and Willie Schubert. It’s framed as Vampirella seeking help from a psychiatrist following the trauma of the plane that she was on in the zero issue crashing, a disbelieving psychiatrist, and it’s certainly different.
| Published by Dynamite
X-Force #10 concludes “The Counterfeit King” and with it the series (at least for now). Ed Brisson, Dylan Burnett, Jesus Aburtov, and Cory Petit go out with a bang as X-Force have a final confrontation with Stryfe and his remaining forces. Also, wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff.
| Published by Marvel

Change Your Mind, Change Your Life
Chapter 7
She wasn’t surprised to see Natasha leaning against the wall outside her office at five o’clock that afternoon, half-smirking with worried eyes. “Kotyonok.”
“Tante.” That drew the smirk into a small smile as Natasha walked with her to the private elevator, both staying silent until the doors closed before them. Then ‘Tash slid her hand into Darcy’s, interlocking their fingers. “He called,” Darcy said quietly. “At like, five this morning. To tell me what was going on. That he had to leave.”
“That was good of him.”
“Yeah.” Darcy bit her lip. “It sucks.”
“Yes.” The elevator stopped, and Natasha stepped out first, her grip firm, leading Darcy to the apartment she shared with Clint rather than going to Darcy’s. Clint met them at the door with Natasha’s vodka and iced glasses, taking Darcy’s bag and shoving her gently toward the couch.
“So,” Natasha began after all the glasses had emptied once. “The date went well?”
“Yeah,” Darcy sighed, holding her glass out for ‘Tasha to refill. “Really well. We…shit, I’ve got the party at --“
“Nope. Secretary of State canceled it, due to the new developments,” Clint interrupted. “Keep going.”
“We talked about getting together again later this week,” Darcy said after a second. “We had fun, it was a good time, I mean…I think he likes me. I think he really likes me.”
“Who could not?” Natasha purred. “You were lovely.”
“He held my hand,” Darcy added, blushing. “Took his glove off for the second --“ Clint choked, vodka dribbling out over his lower lip, and both Darcy and Natasha looked at him, waiting for him to breathe.
“Wait,” he said between coughs. “Wait, what?”
“He took his glove off and held my hand?”
“You’ve touched --“ Clint coughed again. “-- Victor Von Doom? You’ve touched his skin? He has skin?”
“Oh for God’s sake, Clint, he’s not Darth Vader,” Darcy sighed, but when she looked at Natasha, she saw how carefully blank her expression was. “What?”
“Doom doesn’t do that,” Natasha said quietly. “Doom never takes off his armor in public. Any part of it. I have known of him, I have watched him, I have studied him, at various times, for various employers, looking for weaknesses, for slips. Darcy. He never, never, removes any piece of the armor at any time. Not even in his castle. Perhaps in his bedroom, he is human, he must sleep, but…no.”
“Well, we held hands during the first act, and it was okay. Kind of weird, because his glove is…it’s metal, but it’s really super flexible. Not uncomfortable, it didn’t bother me or anything. Then I went to the bathroom at intermission with Jennifer, we came back, we all had some wine, we settled in for the second act…yeah. Yeah, he had his glove off through the whole second act. But it was dark, and pretty private.” Both the spies were looking at her now as if she’d grown another head.
“Well,” Clint recovered first. “So you guys went out last night and then…”
“Yeah.” Darcy nodded, slumping backwards against the couch. “Then I got a call at five this morning saying he had to go, that the New Soviet were pushing their luck.”
“And you didn’t come tell us,” Natasha said. “You just got up and went to work.”
“I asked if he wanted me to get Tony or Steve, he said no. That the Avengers showing up could make the situation even worse,” she sighed. “My hands were, they are, tied. There’s nothing the Avengers can do. There’s nothing I can do. It’s up to the Kremlin now.”
Natasha filled her glass again, raised an eyebrow at Clint when he pushed his glass closer. “You choked.”
“I was surprised,” he retorted. Natasha snorted, but refilled his glass. “Thank you.”
“It is after midnight in Latveria now,” Natasha said, picking up her glass. “Have you heard from him since this morning?”
“No.” Darcy tried to keep her lip from trembling, and thought she’d done a fairly good job of it. “He’s probably way busy.”
“No news is good news,” Clint added. “No news means he’s not out there on the front lines, no news means nobody’s infiltrated Castle Doom. Because if the New Soviet were able to get an assassin in there, they’d be crowing about it.”
“Were you seen with him last night by anyone?” Natasha asked suddenly.
“We were at Hamilton, ‘Tash, it was crowded as hell.” The spies exchanged a look, and Darcy looked back and forth between them. “What?”
“Take it that you were, then,” Clint said. “Listen, you don’t leave the building without at least three security agents for a while, okay?”
“What? No, we had one date, we’ve never been seen together before --“
“Crimson Dynamos,” Clint said brusquely. “You and ‘Tasha approached him and Namor at the party. You went inside with him. You came back out with him. You’re a legit target, Darce. At least three agents, I’d feel better if you didn’t go out without an Avenger or an X-Man for a while, to be honest.”
“There were other observers besides the Dynamos,” Natasha added. “I know there were. And you had a nice long conversation with him outside, in clear view, while everyone else was busy. I am not scolding you; I am pointing this out. They know who you are. They know he has shown interest in you, and they know that you are a member of our support staff. You are likely a high priority target now for an extraction and kidnapping team.”
“Christ,” Darcy muttered, holding out her glass again. “Top me up.”
“He has likely thought of this now as well,” Natasha went on. “If things went as well as you think they did, it would not surprise me to wake up tomorrow morning to see the building flanked by Doombots.”
“Oh, surely not, he’s got to know what kind of fit Tony would throw over that,” Darcy argued. “You want to talk about a pissing contest, Christ, Doombots versus the Iron Legion, Tony’d go batshit.” Natasha shrugged, sipping her vodka.
“Perhaps he will not send them overtly,” she said. “But if you do not hear from the Latverian Embassy offering you extra security within, say, the next forty-eight hours? I will be very surprised indeed. And what do you think that security will be made of?”
“Doombots,” Darcy sighed, collapsing against the sofa. “God. Tony will be livid.”
“Well, if nothing else, you’ll be able to tell just how much he likes you,” Clint grinned. “What would you say, Tash? Three if he’s really into her?”
“I would feel better if he hired someone, but yes, at least three,” Natasha said, stone-faced. “Perhaps the best of both worlds; perhaps --“
“Not Wade. Just not Wade,” Clint said, looking up at the ceiling and pressing his hands together as if he were praying. “Oh please God not Wade.”
“You’re both horrible,” Darcy grinned. “First, again, one date, hello? Second, he’s got a little more on his mind than me right now. Third, hiring somebody? Like who?”
“Deadpool,” Natasha said frankly, and Clint dropped back against the couch, shaking his head violently.
“No, no, no, no, no, not Wade, just not Wade, I don’t care who else --“
“I have heard that Creed is available; who would you rather, then, Deadpool or Sabretooth?” Natasha asked, raising one eyebrow. “The worst thing about Wade is that he talks too much.”
“Too much? He never stops!” Clint exclaimed.
“And Sabretooth is apt to lose his humanity and try to kill everyone,” Natasha snapped back. “Wade will shut up if you are firm enough.”
“What about LeBeau? I’ll call him myself, you’d like Remy, Darce, he’s long and tall and made out of sex,” Clint offered.
“Yes, because her beau is going to hire someone who would try to charm his way into her pants,” Natasha pointed out. Darcy sat back with her vodka, pleasantly buzzed, waiting for the two spies to stop arguing.
“Guys. It doesn’t matter because he’s not going to do any such thing,” Darcy said quickly when both of them had paused. “One date, you guys, I’m not a princess, I’m not anybody important. He barely knows my name.”
“Would you care to place a wager?” Natasha offered, and Darcy considered. If Nat was sure enough that she was willing to bet on it…because Nat didn’t bet unless it was a sure thing.
“Okay, maybe, but at best it’ll be a single Doombot. I actually think it might be one or two of his Latverian Embassy heavies, if anything at all.”
“We will see,” Natasha said, winking. “Probably by morning.”
Intelligence briefings, meetings with his allies and their generals along with his own, working out a cohesive united defensive strategy that would save as many lives and materiel as possible, calculating with his military advisors how much ordnance and how many super tanks and operations teams to drive them could be spared, as well as how quickly the reinforcements would arrive at their destinations, all these things had filled his time from the moment he had arrived home.
Now, however, all that was left was the waiting and the hope that the New Soviet would realize what a mistake they were making; the EU had already issued a condemnatory statement against the aggressive movements and escalation in Ukraine, the UN were trying to open up diplomatic relations. Hopefully, this would all have been for naught. For now, all that was left was to wait and see. He gave orders that he was not to be disturbed save for an emergency, and went to his rooms. He had been awake for over 24 hours, and though he could remain conscious and coherent for up to four days, he preferred not to if it was not necessary, even if it was only late afternoon.
He took a shower, soaked for a bit, then went to bed, closing his eyes and breathing deeply and rhythmically in order to invite sleep. Then Darcy’s features passed behind his eyelids, and he sat up, cursing as he picked up the phone beside the bed. It took several minutes for the international call to go through, but eventually she answered.
“Avengers Initiative, this is Darcy Lewis.”
“Darcy.”
“Victor,” she said, and he could hear the relief in her voice. Damn.
“I hope this is not a bad time,” he began.
“No, no, I just sat down behind my desk. How are you? Is everything okay?”
“I am exhausted,” he admitted. “And once we hang up, I intend on sleeping until either a servant wakes me, or I wake on my own. But I am well, so far.”
“Good. Stay that way,” she said firmly, and he had to chuckle at the cheek of the young woman giving orders, even faux-orders, to him. “Seriously, though, I’m really glad you called.”
“As am I. How are you?”
“I’m okay. I’ve got a little tiny bit of a headache because I drank too much of Nat’s vodka last night, fair warning, don’t drink with the Black Widow, she can drink anybody but Steve and Thor under the table.”
“I will keep that in mind. You said there was a function you had to attend last night. Were you able to avoid it, then?”
“Nah, it got canceled. The Secretary of State was too busy with the UN because of what’s going on over there. It’s okay, I didn’t really want to meet the president’s kids anyway.” He snorted.
“Inform me if the sons are rude. The daughter is much better bred; she takes after her mother, the first wife.”
“Oh, I fully expect Junior and Nimrod to be douchecanoes,” she said airily. “I actually got a gown that covers all the assets just for them.” It took a moment for him to parse what she meant, and his free hand grasped his coverlet tightly at the thought of either of the president’s sons being ungentlemanly with her.
“As I said, inform me,” he repeated himself, carefully keeping his voice steady. “There are certain business dealings with Chernaya that I will gladly interfere in, should they need a reminder of how well connected you are.” And that reminded him. “You have not left Avengers Tower, have you?”
“Not since yesterday morning, no, but I’m going to have to eventually.”
“If it would not be too presumptuous, would you do me the kindness of informing the Embassy if you do? They will send a security detail for you. I have no fear for you within Avengers Tower itself; even if they are called away, Stark’s security team and his technology should be sufficient.” Too, he would call Stark, he decided. A subdermal tracker somewhere discreet would not go amiss, if she did not have one already. She was, after all, an intimate of Prince Thor, and obviously a favorite of the team.
“If it will make you feel better,” she said after a moment. “Guess I get to tell Nat she was right.”
“I’m sorry?”
“Natasha and Clint said last night they thought you’d want security for me. Clint doesn’t want me leaving without at least three members of security, or an Avenger. I told them I thought that was a little…” she paused. “I don’t know, we’ve had one date, I thought it was a little soon for something like that.”
“In any other time, I would agree. But this is a time of hostility, and the FSB do not play by the rules.”
“You know the Avengers would come for me, right?”
“That is not the point. The point is that nothing untoward happen to you to begin with. You are a noncombatant civilian, but that will not stop certain agencies.”
“If it’ll put your mind at ease, sure,” she said lightly. “You’ve got enough to worry about right now without adding me into the mix.”
“Then I will make the arrangements momentarily. Thank you for understanding.”
“Oh, I don’t have any problem with being safe,” she laughed. “You’re welcome. And you should probably get some sleep, and I’ve got to earn my paycheck, so --“
“Of course. Was this a good time? May I call again?”
“Anytime, Victor. And especially if you have to go add a personal touch, okay?”
“I remember. Have a good day, Darcy.”
“Good night, Victor.” He hung up, called the New York embassy and gave the requisite orders for her security detail if requested, debated…it was still fairly early…and decided not to call Stark until later. Besides, if push came to shove, there were magical means of finding her. He was able, then, to lie back and eventually sleep.
The intelligence that came in overnight was not promising. The strengthening push into Ukraine, the troops now crossing Belarus, pointed toward the New Soviet’s determination to reconquer the smaller countries. Belarus could be forgiven; their position was unenviable, and while Victor knew they were playing both sides against the middle, he also knew that they could not possibly stand before the might of the troops currently passing through their country. He gave the orders for the immediate air transport of several brigades of Doombots to help defend Poland’s eastern border, with promises of more as soon as he knew more about the Ukrainian situation. He also gave the orders for the supertanks, already loaded onto the special express trains, and their operators to make the journey to Lublin and Bialystok for assignment. Those destined for Ukraine and Romania were already en route.
A teleconference with the generals, exhibiting the latest Doombot models and pointing out their strengths, took up a few hours, and then another teleconference with Chancellor Merkel, President Macron, and President Mattarella regarding the efforts the EU had made to convince Russia to stand down. He did not comment on the absence of Prime Minister May and President Trump; it was only to be expected, after the Brexit, and of course President Trump likely did not even know there were currently tensions. Nor, to be honest, did Victor think the man would care. Ukraine was far enough away that the U.S. could ignore it, though he had an idea that the First Lady was likely keeping a very close eye on the situation. She was from the region, after all.
Now he paced in his control center, waiting. He felt somewhat bound by his determination to change; were he the Doom of five years ago, he would have gone to the front and decimated the armies with a few spells, driven them forth from the soil of his allies and shown no mercy. He could feel the energy, taste the triumph…but no. “I am not that man any longer,” he growled to himself between gritted teeth. “I am better. I am stronger, I am more than I was.” But the words did nothing to curb his desire to see something destroyed by his hands.
He swallowed his irritation, and began reviewing the currently available freelance enhanced humans or mutants who might be acceptable to Darcy as a bodyguard. She could not be followed by a Doombot all the time, and while the embassy’s security was top notch, they were all human. He did not like their chances against more Crimson Dynamos or perhaps Black Widows.
Sabretooth was not an option, due to his instability. Certainly he was supposedly “cured,” but he had seen Victor Creed in his murderous frenzies, and he would not risk Darcy in that manner. Elektra was a possibility, save for the fact that she had a price of her own on her head, one that would never be called off. Deadpool was annoying, and too easily distracted.
He studied videos of the last current possibility for a long few minutes, the high angular cheekbones, the saucy grin, the insolent grace, the lean, muscular body. His upper lip lifted into a sneer, watching him attempt to charm every woman he met. Did he dare try to hire this one? What if Darcy found him attractive? What if, since he was unable to court her properly right now, she allowed that charm to disarm her? He pushed himself away from the control panel, paced the room again, glancing every so often at the loop of the man in action leaping to provide cover for a child, defending an elderly man, sweeping a handful of foes into unconsciousness with a few well placed blows. Finally, he stopped, folding his arms over his chest.
He was fond of Darcy. She seemed fond of him. They were not sworn to one another in any way, they had not even begun to scratch the surface of any type of relationship. Hiring someone to guard her was not for his benefit, it was for hers. Her association with him was what would place her in jeopardy; he was therefore honor bound to ensure her safety. Out of the available possibilities, this was the best option.
And besides, if she gave way to the flattering rogue’s charms, if she could not remember who had hired him and why to begin with, then it was simply not meant to be. He sighed, then picked up the phone.
The welding arc flashed blue, hotly hypnotic, as the Clash screamed about knowing one’s rights, the thudding bass enough to feel it in his feet as he worked, mouthing the words along with the song. He had just finished the line of weld when the song cut off abruptly, and he cut off the welding torch, flipping up his helmet. “FRIDAY?”
“Sorry, sir, but you didn’t hear me the first eight times I called your name,” his AI said. “Lord Protector Von Doom is on the line for you.”
“Oh.” Tony wrenched the helmet off, wiped his forehead on his arm. “How long do I have before Pep wants me for the dinner thing?”
“Two and a half hours, sir.”
“Right, and my alarm is --“
“For an hour and a half from now. Shall I put Lord Doom through, sir?”
“Yeah. Yeah, patch him in.” He laid his tools to the side, got a bottle of water from the mini-fridge and downed it, waiting.
“Mr. Stark.” Doom’s voice boomed, even when he wasn’t meaning to. He’d have made a hell of a front for a metal band. Literally, Tony thought to himself, grinning.
“Vic! Good to hear from you. How’s Europe?”
“Holding together for the moment. May I have a word?”
“Sure. You need a hand out there? I don’t mind,” Tony offered. “I owe them a courtesy call after the other night, to be honest.”
“I promise you, Mr. Stark, you are first on the list should reinforcements be needed. I’m calling regarding Miss Lewis’ current security measures.” Tony blinked.
“She lives in Avengers Tower, man, we’re not going to let anything happen to her,” Tony began, a low growl of discontent rumbling in his belly. What, he didn’t think the Avengers could keep her safe?
“I’m well aware, but she does have to leave the tower from time to time, Mr. Stark, and while your security teams are top-notch, they are human,” Doom said. “Humans, unenhanced humans, well trained humans, are very well and good against most of the FSB or human extraction teams. I am more concerned for mutant and enhanced threats. I have a bodyguard candidate in mind for her. I am calling to ask if I might rent the gentleman a suite of rooms in the Tower, so that he is always at hand. This is only temporary,” he added. “Until the unpleasantness here is over, and the New Soviet come to their senses.”
“Who’ve you got in mind?” Tony asked, taking another swallow of his water.
“Remy LeBeau. Gambit.” Tony choked, coughed, had to catch his breath.
“I thought he was upstate? In Westchester?” He said when he could speak again.
“No. He has left Xavier’s team, and is currently working as a freelance operative in Quebec City.”
“Not New Orleans?”
“I believe he is persona non grata in the Crescent City at the moment. Something to do with the Assassin’s Guild.”
“Yeah. Yeah, um. Let me put you on hold for just a minute so I can check the availability, okay?”
“Certainly.” Tony made a cutting gesture over his throat at one of the cameras, and Billy Joel’s “Vienna” began to play, signaling that Doom was on hold. “FRIDAY? Do we have anything?”
“The guest floor below the Avengers’ floor is currently empty, sir,” came the lilting answer. “The current market value for one of the guest suites is approximately $15,000 per month, due to the space, the limited availability of rentals in New York, and the location.”
“Okay. Bring him back on.” The music cut again. “Vic, you there?”
“Yes, Mr. Stark,” came the irritated reply, and Tony grinned to himself.
“Yeah. I’ve got some room, I’ll cut you a deal because it’s for Artoo. Eight grand a month, it’s a two bedroom suite with a hell of a view, access to the Avengers’ workout area and communal areas if he wants it. Comes furnished, top of the line electronics, utilities, cable, and delivery service included.”
“Acceptable. I will call you back after I speak to Mr. LeBeau,” Doom said after a second. “I deeply appreciate your courtesy in this matter.”
“Yeah, no problem,” Tony said easily. “Let’s do doubles next time you’re in town, me and Pep, you and Darce, huh?” A long pause.
“I have no objections. Thank you again.”
“Sure thing. Later.” He made the motion again, and the call cut off. “FRIDAY. Make sure one of the suites is deep cleaned,” he ordered. “I don’t know when he’ll show, so, let’s get on it.”
“Yes, sir. Shall I have groceries delivered as well?”
“No; wait on that until we know when. Work up an invoice for the Latverian Embassy at eight.”
“Yes, sir.” Tony hefted his helmet up, slid it back on his head, tightened the belt.
“How much longer do I have to play, FRIDAY?”
“Approximately one hour, eighteen minutes, sir.”
“Awesome. Bring back the tunes.”
“You have the right…to free speech…as long as you’re not dumb enough to actually TRY it!” The music picked back up right where it had left off. Tony grinned, flipping his hood down and re-lit the welding torch, bending back over his work.

reelin’ with the feelin’ (darcy/namor)
For @phoenix-173.
When Darcy was seven, she spent a summer on her bio-dad’s houseboat in the Florida Keys. The first thing out of her mouth when her mothers picked her up afterwards was, “I fell in the water and drowned for a while and it was awesome!” She did not spend any more summers with her bio-dad. Darcy wasn’t given to exaggeration or hyperbole, which is why her mothers demanded an accounting of the incident from Jack. His response, “She was swimming for a while and I napped, she was fine,” was enough to change the visitation rules. From Darcy’s 8th birthday on, they stuck to more easily regulated holidays, the ones he spent in the city and not on the sea.
She found other ways to the ocean. By hook or by crook, the waters were a part of her now because the thing of it was, Darcy hadn’t been exaggerating.
She did fall.
She did drown.
She just didn’t stay drowned.
There was a boy in the water. Darcy waved to him. He tilted his head, so she knew he’d seen her, but he didn’t wave back. She scooted on her tummy so that most of her torso was hanging off the edge of the boat, trying to get a better view. He wasn’t kicking his legs or moving his arms, he was just hanging there in the water, a few feet below the surface.
“Are you okay?” she asked, slowly and exaggeratedly.
He frowned at her.
“Are you okay?” she asked again, trying to use her arms to gesture and make her words clearer to the boy in the water. That was her downfall. Literally. She barely had time for her eyes to widen before she was tipping into the water, face first.
She flailed, arms and legs kicking, but all that did was level her out a little. Her momentum had pushed her a few feet below the surface and her clothes weighed her down more than her thrashing could buoy her up. She twisted and turned awkwardly in the water, her hair tangling around her head and neck till she could not tell up from down or left from right. Her lungs were hurting, her eyes burned from the salt and there was water in her nose.
Darcy opened her mouth -
A hand covered her lips, trapping the air about to escape. Another hand grasped her shoulder, holding firmly, a silent admonishment to stay still. Darcy froze, trembling and desperately trying to keep what little air she had left in her lungs. The hand left her shoulder and carefully pulled her hair away from her eyes, pushing it to drift behind her.
She hurt, she couldn’t focus, her chest was aching, she started to move and the hand over her mouth was suddenly gone - replaced by lips. Darcy stared at the boy as air was forced into her lungs straight from his. She gasped as she breathed deep, then something thicker than air was passing between them, something colder than ice that seemed to fill up her lungs, her chest, breaking out from between her ribs and expanding until it pushed against her skin all over.
The boy took his mouth from hers, grabbed her wrists and pulled her deeper under the water.
Darcy kicked and fought, holding onto that last breath he’d given her until her vision started to go blurry at the edges. She opened her mouth for a scream and water flooded in, down her throat and then through it.
The boy waited for her eyes to meet his before he smiled.
Darcy, overwhelmed by the magnitude of the last few minutes, frowned at him and said: “I don’t think I like you.”
...
In London, Jane watched Darcy watch the water with the same kind of naked longing that she knew she wore when she looked at the stars. “You could go swimming if you wanted,” she said. “I mean, it’s cold, but don’t they make suits for that kind of thing?”
“Nah,” Darcy said, shrugging and very deliberately turning her back on the ocean. “I don’t like to swim in public.” She gestured to her chest and made a face, “The structural capacity of most suits isn’t really enough to contain my personal flotation devices.”
“Oh,” Jane said. “You could wear a t-shirt?”
“Not the same, but thanks anyways.”
...
She was standing waist-deep in the water, skimming her fingers along the flat surface. There was a glint of gold flirting with the edge of her vision about ten feet further into the depths, just past where the sandbar ended.
Darcy rolled her eyes at the obvious ploy. “Not happening,” she murmured, deliberately turning her back on the glint in the water and the sun, still hanging low in the sky. Sunrise was past, the world was waking up, and she could only steal another half hour before she would have to head back.
Time and tide wait for no man, she thought to herself. There was a faint, deliberate splashing sound behind her. Except him, she corrected herself with a slight smile.
“What keeps you?” he demanded.
“It’s called a job, Namor.”
“You have a job,” he reminded her, coming to stand close enough she could feel the faint heat emanating from his skin. She leaned back a little so she was resting against him, the top of her head was level with his shoulder, kind of.
“I’m not ready to be any kind of queen or wife,” Darcy said, wrinkling her nose at the thought. “I’m seventeen.”
Namor grumbled, but didn’t truly object. “We do not have to wed for you to stay,” he said reluctantly. “But come. You take pieces of me with you where you go.”
Darcy grabbed at one of his hands and pulled it up so it rested flat over the top of her ribcage, cupping her heart. His hand was large enough that the heel rested over her breast, but she ignored that. “You could take it back,” she offered. “You were still pretty young-”
“No,” he said, so firmly and so quickly that she dropped it. She let him turn her around so they faced the depths and the sun and together they watched it fill the sky and glimmer off the waves until she absolutely, unequivocally, had to go.
“Next weekend,” she offered. “I’ll have to call and check in once or twice, but I can come out longer.”
“Someday I will not be satisfied with the dregs of your time,” Namor said, and it was as much an acceptance of her offer as it was a warning.
...
“Why were you there, in the water under the docks, that day?”
“There was a current where no current should be. I was curious.”
“A mystery?”
“I would call it ‘guidance.’”
...
After the elves but before New York, Darcy walked out into the waters of the North Atlantic sea and she let them swallow her whole. She did not fight when the water pulled her down, down, deep and far and fast. She let the cold ocean cradle her, shut her eyes and napped until she was woken by a much warmer, angrier embrace.
“Are you done?” he asked. “Will you come?”
“There are people who love me up there-”
Namor scowled, dark eyes seeming almost to glow. “There are people who love you down here,” he pointed out through grit teeth.
Darcy looked at him and she hurt, for herself and for him. But the truth was the truth, and it was this: “I can’t leave it all behind.”
“I cannot live in two places at once,” he said, pressing one hand over her heart.
“What does that-” mean for us, she wanted to say. “What do we do?” she asked instead.
He said nothing.
...
There was a moment, in New Mexico, where Darcy thought, If I die, he will tear this world in half to find the killers.
Well.
Better not die, then.
...
Darcy was not in New York when the man came out of the water. Darcy was on Asgard, with Jane, for the first and (she hoped) the last time. She’d now seen an ocean of stars, light drifting across land like waves lapping at the shore. She preferred an actual ocean: salt and sand and teeming with life.
She’d barely stepped off the Bifrost imprint before she was in his arms. “Namor?” she said, confused but still hugging him. He was dry, he was inside, she had absolutely no idea what was going on, but he was here.
“The merman said he was looking for his wife,” Tony drawled. “Wasn’t expecting that to be you, Lewis.”
“Technically I think we’re betrothed,” she said faintly, still staring at Namor. “Did something happen?”
He shrugged. “I will not be without you anymore.”
“I can’t just leave-”
“Then I will stay, for now.”
“But you have to-”
“And you can come with me. I believe you call it a ‘compromise.’”
Darcy stared at him for a moment. For a man who could embody the endlessly shifting ocean, he looked utterly implacable. “Okay,” she said. “Okay, we’ll make it work.”

An up-to-date look at the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Photo by Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images for Disney
Expect a lot of sequels.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe closed out its “Infinity Saga” last summer with the releases of Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, which ended a 23-film cycle of big, ambitious, and thrilling storytelling. Despite what felt like a logical beginning, middle and end to its first few phases of films, Disney and Marvel have no plans to slow down anytime soon.
Captain America, Iron Man, and some of the other key Avengers from the last decade-plus are now set aside for characters stepping forward into bigger roles — such as Black Panther and Captain Marvel — and characters we have not seen in this iteration of films yet. With Disney’s merger with Fox, characters like the X-Men and Fantastic Four are on the way with Marvel Studios now having the rights to the majority of the storied comic company’s intellectual property. This comes after decades of heroes’ film rights being divided among several studios.
Here is the full list of projects that are currently in development for the next phases of the MCU.
Theatrical Releases
Black Widow (November 6, 2020)
There had been rumors for years that Scarlett Johansson would get her own solo film and now it is set to lead Marvel’s “Phase Four” as the first-post Infinity Saga movie. However, this film is set to take place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Other cast members include David Harbour, Rachel Weisz and Florence Pugh, among others. Taskmaster will be the villain in this movie, who is known for his ability to copy the powers of the heroes he is facing.
The Eternals (February 12, 2021)
Marvel is never afraid to throw something new and weird at its audience, and did so with massive success with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. The Eternals is set to tell the story of a race of human-god aliens created by beings called Celestials that have lived on Earth for 7,000 years among us. The cast includes Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Angeline Jolie, Gemma Chan, Lauren Ridloff, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Lia McHugh, and Kit Harington, to name a few from the massive lineup. Chloé Zhao will helm the film.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (May 7, 2021)
The MCU has a way of existing as genre films inside of a superhero film packaging. To name a few examples, we have seen political thrillers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and heist films (Ant-Man), but now Marvel steps into its first kung fu-inspired take. Shang-Chi is a master of the martial arts and will be played by relative newcomer Simu Liu. We have actually heard of the Ten Rings before, as they were the terrorist organization introduced when Tony Stark was kidnapped in Iron Man. Then, we met its leader, The Mandarin, in Iron Man 3. Except we didn’t because that was a fake out. Tony Leung is set to play the “real” Mandarin and Awkwafina is also set for a role in the film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton.
Untitled Spider-Man Sequel (November 5, 2021)
Things were dicey here for a bit with Disney and Sony, who owns Spider-Man’s film rights, having a contract dispute in the summer of 2019. However, both sides came to an agreement and Tom Holland’s Spidey is back on track with Zendaya also set to return and Jon Watts directing once again.
Thor: Love and Thunder (February 11, 2022)
Thor is one of the only original Avengers set to play a role in the next phase of films and both Chris Hemsworth and director Taika Waititi are set to return. Tessa Thompson will also return as Valkyrie and Natalie Portman is making her return to the role of Jane Foster in the film. Foster is set to become the female version of Thor in this next installment with Christian Bale making his MCU debut as the film’s villain, though we do not yet know who he is playing.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (March 25, 2022)
Doctor Strange’s solo outing was solid, but did not do a ton to movie the needle among MCU fans. That changed with the key role that he played in both Infinity War and Endgame and now he is back for another film centered around him. This time, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Strange will be joined by another Marvel hero in the form of Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen. Benedict Wong is set to return as Wong with Chiwetel Ejiofor also back to play Karl Mordo. The events of this film will be tied into the Scarlet Witch Disney+ series WandaVision (which we will discuss here a bit later). The film will be directed by Sam Raimi of the Evil Dead franchise and the 2000s Spider-Man films.
Black Panther II (May 6, 2022)
When Black Panther became the cultural phenomenon it was after coming out in February of 2018 — eventually earning a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars — it was only a matter of time before we got a sequel. Not much is known about the project other than Ryan Coogler returning to direct and the expectation is that the majority of the cast from the last film should return, as well. The rumor is that the sequel may feature Namor, who actually preceded Aquaman as the Atlantean/human hybrid character in pop culture.
Untitled Captain Marvel Sequel (July 8, 2022)
The only thing that is known about this film is that Brie Larson is set to reprise her role as the titular hero. Seeing as her solo film took place in the 90s and Endgame brought her into the present day, there is no shortage of possibilities for what her next outing might look like.
Unscheduled theatrical projects
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
After a brief brush with controversy over old tweets that saw James Gunn fired from the job of directing this movie, all sides came to an agreement and he was brought back. This is expected to close out the story thread of his iteration of the Guardians, but it is going to have to wait until he finishes work on DC’s The Suicide Squad, which he signed on to direct when he was originally fired by Marvel.
Untitled Ant-Man and The Wasp Sequel
A more recent addition to the upcoming slate of films with news of its development dropping in April 2020. Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly are expected to be back in their roles, and Peyton Reed will be back to direct after doing the last two films.
Blade
This was the surprise of all surprises when its development was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Mahershala Ali will be playing the role after lobbying Marvel to bring back the character, and the Oscar winner reaching out was too good for the studio to pass up. That is all we know about this film for now, but it has fans of the vampire hunter excited to see what Ali and the studio can come up with.
Fantastic Four
It is only a matter of time before we get to see Marvel’s iconic foursome of heroes hit the screen again after the Disney-Fox merger went through. After a few “meh” outings in the mid-2000s and a putrid reboot attempt in 2015, the characters are back where they belong. All we know so far is that the studio is developing the project with no other details available at this time. Fans have been clamoring for the real-life couple of John Krasinski and Emily Blunt to play Reed Richards and Sue Storm, respectively. You can add my name to the list of people who would love to see that casting.
X-Men
We are probably far away from the X-Men making their debut in the MCU, which is not the worst thing in the world. Fox’s franchise ran for almost 20 years and it is going to take some time for people to cleanse their pallets of the Hugh Jackman/Patrick Stewart-era of characters. They are on the way, but it is going to take some time and they might be the last of these projects that we see on the screen.
Disney+ Shows
These will appear exclusively on the Disney+ streaming platform, but Marvel maintains they will have cinematic budgets and that everything will connect to the theatrical releases, so this is a brand new layer to the MCU.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (August 2020)
Now that Black Widow has been pushed to the fall, this is the next MCU property we are set to see. This series is set to follow Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) after the events of Endgame, where an old Captain America passed his shield and mantle on to Wilson. Daniel Brühl is set to return as Helmut Zemo of Civil War fame and Emily VanCamp returning as Sharon Carter. Wyatt Russell joins the cast as John Walker, the U.S. government created successor to Steve Rogers.
WandaVision (December 2020)
As we mentioned before, this series is set to lead into the events of the Doctor Strange sequel with Wanda Maximoff involved in a big way. Paul Bettany is also set to return as Vision, as it appears that Wanda has created an alternate reality where they can live together among the backdrop of sitcom-style settings from multiple decades (yeah, it’s going to get really dang weird). An adult version of Monica Rambeau, who was a child in Captain Marvel, is set to debut and be played by Teyonah Parris. Randall Park and Kat Dennings are going to return to the MCU in their roles of Jimmy Woo and Darcy Lewis, respectively.
Loki (Early 2021)
Loki stealing the Tesseract in an alternate timeline in Endgame screamed Disney+ series, and now Marvel is doing just that. The series will see Tom Hiddleston reprising his role as the God of Mischief as an alternate version of his 2012 self traveling back in time and altering history. Owen Wilson and Richard E. Grant are also set to join in some form or fashion.
What If...? (Mid-2021)
This is going to be an animated anthology series that explores how events of the MCU would have happened by changing different variables, a la if Peggy Carter was given the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers. The original actors from MCU films will return to reprise their roles in a voice acting capacity for the series, which will star Jeffrey Wright as The Watcher. A second season has already been greenlit, as well.
Hawkeye (2022)
A limited series is set to come for the bow-and-arrow wielder with Jeremy Renner reprising his role as Clint Barton, which would see him pass on his mantle of Hawkeye to Kate Bishop (reportedly to be portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld).
Ms. Marvel (2022)
Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel has been a recent character in the comics with rapidly growing popularity among fans. Not a whole lot is out there on the series other than Bisha K. Ali being hired as the head writer. It is also possible Ms. Marvel is introduced in Captain Marvel’s sequel.
Moon Knight (2022)
Moon Knight is Marvel’s answer to Batman, except he has a dissociative identity disorder. So ... that’s an interesting concept. In addition to his Disney+ series, Moon Knight will be appearing in future MCU films, as well.
She-Hulk (2022)
She-Hulk is set to revolve around Jennifer Walters, the cousin of Bruce Banner/Hulk who gains powers after receiving a blood transfusion from him. Walters is a skilled lawyer and has often appeared as representation to heroes and other enhanced beings over the years. Another ... interesting concept. Marvel is reportedly looking for an “Alison Brie-type” to play this character. The lead writer on the series is set to be Jessica Gao of Rick and Morty fame.

I Want To Swim With Whale Sharks. Authors choice! 😄
I WANT TO SWIM WITH WHALE SHARKS
That’s all Darcy has to say, and her boyfriend is tripping all over himself to make her birthday wish a reality. Johnny calls in a favor with an “old friend” (and Darcy knows that’s code for lover because she wasn’t born yesterday), and Darcy gets to swim with whale sharks. And her guide is none other than the King of Atlantis, Namor, first of his name. Which is rad.Even more rad: Namor makes it tropical-ocean clear that he’d be interested in a private swim with Darcy, and that she might as well bring Johnny along for the ride.
