If I had a nickel for every time Sarah Michelle Gellar played a hyper-competent character who is often underestimated due to her femininity and is part of a group of teens/young adults who solve supernatural mysteries and is closely associated with Scooby Doo and has a nerdy, super smart, and seemingly “good girl” lesbian best friend whose own femininity is used as a foil for smg’s character’s femininity and said best friend also at some point has an unassuming love interest with a dark side who is played by Seth Green, I would have two nickels.
Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

am I crazy or Daphne and Oz have a little too much chemistry, the way she was looking at him when he was hanging out with Gavin had me giggling and kicking my feet.

WB: Mystery Inc. & Scrappy-Doo
Public Domain: Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, & Toto
The main cast of the Oz books contained the intelligent Scarecrow, the heartfelt Tinman, the often scared Cowardly Lion, the spunky canine Toto, & the often danger prone Dorothy.
Together the group defeated the Wicked Witch of the West and revealed the mysterious Wizard of Oz to be merely a charlatan from Omaha. In a separate adventure, Tin Man and Scarecrow found that Pip was actually the princess of Oz, Ozma.

One of the funniest things to me is how Morgan interacts with Karadec vs the rest of the Major Crimes team.
She’s pleasant and warm with the team, bringing in doughnuts, apologizing for stealing Daphne’s candy, bantering with Oz, and having calm investigation sessions with Soto about Roman’s case.
And with Karadec? Sheer mass chaos. If she’s not actively flouting the rules then she’s telling you how much you suck (for not letting her flout the rules). No she will NOT bring in your favorite pastry until she decides if she likes you, and also you’re about to get into a chase with a suspect bc she wants to reveal evidence in a dramatic way.
There’s reasons for why that is - they have similar personalities, they are harder on one another bc they’re partners and they have to trust one another more, Morgan is more sensitive to Karadec’s frustration w/ her than she lets on and is working very hard to pretend she doesn’t care.
But honestly, I just find it really funny that Morgan is vibing so well with the rest of the team while Karadec is just 1000% done with life.

They're off to see the wizard! The wonderful wizard of Oz!!
I actually started this last month and then got burnt out and didn't finish it until now but whatever I FINISHED IT!! I finished watching Scooby Doo and Guess Who last month and there's a Wizard of Oz parody in the last episode and I just knew I had to do fanart, a legal requirement if you will.
I kept Shaggy, Fred and Velma's costumes from the episode the same but I thought Daphne and Scooby deserved costumes that were a bit more personal too. But who would the wizard in question be?? Well don't worry because I drew art for that too!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just can't stop thinking about a proper direct to DVD scooby WOZ parody film and how Van Ghoul should be the wizard, like in my head it's perfect.

firm believer that eddie will dress as whatever you want him to for halloween
and when you have kids, they always make him dress as the girl character for the family costume
wizard of oz? he’s dorothy
power rangers? he’s the yellow one, even called dibs.
toy story? a toss up— bc bo peep has that bitchin’ grim reaper cane thing but jessie is a cowgirl! he settles for tour guide barbie.
the year your daughter decides to dress as gladiator ii, he chooses emperor caracalla to your emperor geta even though you swear up and down that geta looks exactly like him in a wig.
when the kids are grown and no longer think trick-or-treating with mom and dad is cool—you, steve, nancy and eddie dress as the scooby doo gang. steve throws a fit, hands on purple skirt hips claiming he can’t understand why everyone voted for him to be daphne, and not fred.
“jinkies stevie,” eddie says pushing up the thick black glasses on his nose and adjusting his velma wig, “that one truly is a mystery.”

finished 1x04 and ohmygod i love this show. the characters are so good. I really like the cases so far. the way that Wesley gave his girls the tools and knowledge they needed to survive what happened to them. loved it. this is such a good start for a new show. the cinematography is fucking phenomenal. I love the way everything looks. I love the dynamics between the characters. Morgan and Karadec are hilarious. Karadec and Selena have such a fun friendship too. Daphne and Oz are amazing. I love Morgan's family. What's not to love in this show so far. I need season 2 already lmao

The Heathers + Veronica and Halloween
Jello Shots it's Halloween, Liver Spots it's Halloween
Halloween is probably the holiday that the residents of the Chandler-Duke-McNamara-Sawyer household look forward to the most
Mac still maintains that Christmas is better, but even so she still gets super excited when October rolls around
The four of them go all out for the holiday
They build a giant graveyard in their lawn
They've bought custom fake tombstones that have their names written on them, about 7 skeleton's worth of fake bones, bags of spiderwebs, giant spiders, several animatronic ghosts, the list goes on
It takes a while to set up just because of the sheer amount of stuff, but when it's done it looks amazing
People will come from miles around to see their decorations and take pictures, and their house has ended up on Youtube and even on the local news a few times
The main attraction is the giant skeleton that Chandler got one time
It's easily three stories tall and has to be stored in a warehouse whenever it's not in use, but it is terrifying seeing this giant skeleton tower over the already massive mansion
It also has to be put up by helicopter, which is not cheap
Chandler had gotten it as a prank
The others were being very annoying (they beat her at Mario Party and she is the pettiest of bitches) so she decided to prank them and did so with some Halloween spirit
The idea was that they would come home from work and see this giant skeleton and freak out, but what really happened was that they got home and were amazed at how cool and scary their house looked
She got upset because they were supposed to be scared, to which they said "Heather it's literally 3 fucking stories tall we could see it from miles away"
His name is Mr. Skel Eton (it was Mac's choice, Chandler thought it was dumb but Duke and Veronica liked it and it stuck) and every year they look forward to his installation and dread paying for his removal
Around the middle of the month Mac will come to them with her costume theme
Her and Chandler had always done themed costumes when they were kids, like Anna and Elsa or the Powerpuff Girls (Mac was Bubbles, Chandler was Blossom), a tradition which they continued into adulthood
Some of the costumes they've done include;
South Park: (Chandler as Cartman, Duke as Kyle, Veronica as Stan and Mac as Kenny)
The Wizard of Oz: (Chandler as Glinda the Good, Duke as the Wicked Witch, Veronica as the Scarecrow, Mac as Dorothy)
Spongebob: (Chandler as Mr. Krabs, Duke as Squidward, Veronica as Patrick, Mac as Spongebob)
The Nightmare before Christmas: (Chandler as Sandy Claws, Duke as the Oogie Boogie, Veronica as Jack, Mac as Sally)
Scooby-Doo: (Chandler as Daphne, Duke as Velma, Veronica as Shaggy, Mac as Fred)
Teletubbies: (Chandler as Po, Duke as Dipsy, Veronica as Tinky-Winky, Mac as La-La)
Sometimes they re-use these costumes for Comic-Con
Sometimes they get Betty and Martha to abandon their usual Wesley and Buttercup costumes and go with them, for instance during the year they did Wizard of Oz they went as the Cowardly Lion and the Tin Man, but some years they year the theme and say hell no
Such was the case during the Teletubbies year
Chandler had tried to nope out of that one too but Veronica and Duke told her that if they had to be humiliated so did she
JD also gets roped into this, but he doesn't have a choice in the matter
Veronica will just send him a text saying "You're gonna be XXX this year" and if he tries to refuse Chandler and Duke will get increasingly petty and bother him until he accepts
They made him go as Noo-Noo the Teletubbies year and he literally glued a vacuum to his nose
He didn't speak to any of them for a good few weeks
If they don't need him to join with the theme he'll dress as Jason Vorhees and hide in their bushes, jumping out if someone gets too close
Mac was kinda upset by this, but he reassured her he only does it to people who look like dicks and never kids, so she just kinda accepts it
During the Halloween season they'll watch some appropriate movies
Chandler, under absolutely no circumstances will watch a horror film
She despises them with every fiber of her being, if she sees Veronica or Duke watching one she will go sit outside or go to 7/11 until its over
Mac also gets nightmares if she watches one
One time they watched The Shining and Mac insisted that she is an adult, she can handle a stupid movie
She could not
They had to sleep with the lights on for weeks after
That being the case they usually stick to PG films
Of course that comes with its own issues
None of them can agree wether A Nightmare Before Christmas is a Christmas or Halloween movie, if they play it in October Veronica and Chandler say that its too early, if they play it after Duke and Mac say that its too late
They tried to watch It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown but they all got so pissed off at how stupid Linus was being that they had to shut it off
Hocus Pocus and Coraline are good options that don't result in an argument breaking out
Their favorite Halloween movies;
Chandler - Hocus Pocus
Duke - Nightmare Before Christmas
Veronica - Coraline
Mac - Muppets Haunted Mansion
The latter is a point of contention
The other three think that its stupid, but Mac loves both the Muppets and Haunted Mansion and even if they Kermit puppeteer doesn't sound quite right she still loves the movie
As for candy, their house is usually filled to the brim with sweets but this gets even worse around Halloween
They'll go to Costco the week before to load up on the boxes of the full sized Hershey bars and the like, but Chandler has to hide them so her wives don't eat them all
She made that mistake once, and none of her wives could hear straight for a week after the yelling spiel she went on
"WE ARE ADULTS, IF YOU WANT CANDY GO TO THE FUCKING STORE AND BUY YOUR OWN, WHY DO YOU IMBICILES INSIST ON STEALING THE ONES FOR HALLOWEEN WHEN YOU KNOW THAT THE STORES ARE GONNA BE SOLD OUT SOON..." and she went on and on and on and on
Like literally everything else in their lives they argue over candy corn
Mac and Veronica love it, Duke and Chandler would rather eat cow manure
Chandler absolutely refuses to buy any on her shopping trips or even let it in her kitchen so they have to keep bowls in their rooms
Their favorite Candy:
Chandler - Werther's Originals
(The others call her Grandma whenever she eats them, but they're good ok?)
Duke - Skittles
Veronica - Red Vines
Mac - Candy Corn
Eventually Halloween night rolls around
Their house is well known for being one that gives out full size candy bars, so people will travel near and far to get some
It got so bad one year that they eventually limited it to one bar per person per night, but to make up for it they bought a giant cauldron and filled it with smaller candy and everyone was allowed to grab as much as they could in a single handful
Some people have gotten creative with the word handful, making things like giant hands to grab more candy
Usually the four of them will hand out the big candy and Martha and Betty will handle the smaller candy, making sure no one is coming back for seconds
While she is handing out the candy Chandler reflects on her past
Her mother was vehemently against Halloween, claiming it to be the devil's holiday and forbidding Chandler to participate
On Halloween itself she would drop Chandler off at Mac's Dad's, going to church to pray for the salvation of humanity or whatever and not wanting the others to see the evidence of her sin (Chandler)
**Line break**
Mac's Dad thankfully wasn't a massive prick like Chandler's and would buy a costume for Chandler in secret and let her and Mac go trick or treating
The night always ended too fast, Chandler being forced to give her candy to Mac to hide the evidence from her mom, but she never forgot those happy memories they shared
And in the present, she can't help but give some extra candy to the kids she sees trick or treating with their friends, seeing her and Mac in them

Hi it's me again 🤗
I noticed that you're the only (afaik) blog posting about HPI and its US remake High Potential, so I was very curious to hear your thoughts on comparing both versions? Have you noticed impactful differences (could be either plot, characterization, dynamics...) or is the second one a copycat of the first? Is there one more enjoyable to watch than the other? Also is the US version good? I'm considering watching it, mostly because I miss HPI's early seasons' spirit SO BAD, but also to me Daniel Sunjata = Paul Briggs, which would make an, um... interesting Karadec young!era but wait that's not the point! 😂
Anyway, thoughts? 👀👀
Hello!!
Not me aggressively hunting down HPI and High Potential posts to feed my new obsession 🤣
Yessssss, I would love to share my thoughts on this, let's go!
Let me first say, I only recently watched both of these shows. I first saw the pilot and second episode of High Potential, then I binged S1-3 of HPI, and I've now rewatched High Potential and am keeping up with the new episodes.
Obviously, the setting is one of the most significant differences, but as far as I understand, Major Crimes is a fair equivalent to the DIPJ. It's nice to watch a US crime procedural not set in New York lol. I'll be interested to see how High Potential plays with the geographical aspects of some of the HPI cases.
The pilots are almost exact copies, with one significant difference. The second episode is an entirely different case! Then, the third episode is a remake of HPI 1.02. It sounds like High Potential S1 will have somewhere around 13 episodes, so I'm hopeful it'll continue this back-and-forth of new and copied cases.
I'm thrilled that they've already used this extra episode to expand the plot and characters, and I hope that continues. Minor points that were glossed over in HPI, like Morgane getting her car back, are given a little more time, and we're getting to see more of the footwork done to investigate Roman's disappearance. High Potential is also taking more time to explore Morgan's dynamic with her family, and I love the little ways Roman's absence haunts her.
HPI does a decent job of not presenting the rest of the team as stupid to emphasise Morgane's intelligence, and High Potential is leaning into that. There are some great scenes of Daphne, Oz (Gilles), and Karadec picking up on tiny details, especially ones Morgan misses! Morgan is undoubtedly an asset to the team, but these are seasoned career detectives who're never more than a couple of steps behind her.
I do have a few complaints about the characterisations. First, the show seems to have already lost track of Karadec's cleanliness/hand sanitiser compulsion. Second, Olson's Morgan is not quite as silly goofy as Fleurot's Morgane. I miss my over-the-top ridiculous, no-respect-for-social-conventions lady. Third, Sunjata's portrayal of Karadec comes across as much bolder and—idk how to say it—larger than Nebbou's. He takes up more space, and I miss my dorky, unassuming guy. These are pretty nitpicky, though. Naturally, all of the US actors play their characters a little differently than the original actors. I don't hate it, but I'm still deciding which interpretations I do or don't love. Even so, I'm very much enjoying Morgan's dynamic with Karadec and the other detectives/cops.
I miss the spirit of the early seasons, too 😭 So far, I think it's balancing copycat and reinvention/expansion very well. I'm excited for the rest of it!
At the end of the day, this is a genre I love, and I enjoy watching adaptations simply for the fun of comparing and contrasting them with the original media. But even before I watched HPI, I got drawn into High Potential, so I do recommend checking it out.
Thanks for sticking around for this whole thing! Of course, all of this is based on my reading of HPI and High Potential. If you get around to watching the remake, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Since I’m a huge fan of your writing, I’m curious: who are some your favorite writers and what are some of your favorite books or short stories??
Oh man, I've done so much reading over my life that it's hard to narrow down. Like I'm for sure going to leave people out.
For fiction: some of my favorite authors are the Bronte sisters (slight preference for Charlotte - Jane Eyre was one of my first loves and hugely shaped me as a reader and a writer), Daphne du Maurier (favorite of her books - Rebecca), Sarah Waters (can't decide between Fingersmith and The Paying Guests), Angela Carter (The Bloody Chamber), Susanna Clarke (Jonathon Strange and Mr Norell), Toni Morrison (Beloved), Robin Hobb (the Farseer trilogy and Fitz's further adventures, but I've heard good things about the Liveship Trader books!), Terry Pratchett (the Tiffany Aching books are particular favorites), and Anne Rice (well, depending on the book tbh, she's not very consistent lol - the first three Vampire Chronicle books are my favs from her), with special shout-outs to Robin McKinley (Beauty), Avi (The True Confession of Charlotte Doyle), LM Montgomery (Anne of Green Gables), Frank L Baum (I have read every single Oz book - there are a ton of them!) and Madeleine L'Engle (A Wrinkle in Time), who were my favs when I was a kid (along with the Babysitter's Club book lol - but they're mostly ghostwritten so I'm not sure who to credit!)
Right now, I'm re-reading (for the millionth time) The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter, which is a collection of fairy tale retellings - but that feels like a really inadequate way to describe it. It's very visceral, primal, and poetic. My favorite story from the collection is "The Bloody Chamber," which is a Bluebeard retelling. Bluebeard is one of my favorite fairy tales, but it understandably doesn't get a lot of adaptation. (I'm very curious what Disney's Bluebeard would look like lmao)
I'm also listening to the audiobook of The Vampire Lestat, which is the reason that Anne Rice is on that list. She really lost me with her later books, but listening to TVL reminded me that actually, she can be very good! She really excels at evocative descriptions and conveying emotion - she's very shameless, in a good way. A woman who always writes with her entire pussy, whatever else you might say about her.
But I actually read more nonfiction than fiction. I'm a big fan of memoirs - not celebrity memoirs (although Jennette McCurdy's I'm Glad My Mom Died was probably my favorite book I've read this year), but memoirs that are more about someone grappling with the human experience - like, sometimes the author has been through something horrible and they've done a lot of mediation on what they've been through, or sometimes the author is just a very astute and entertaining observer of their own (and other people's) ridiculousness. Some of my favorites are Mary Karr, Caroline Knapp, David Sedaris, Cheryl Strayed, Jeanette Walls, Tara Westover, and Allie Brosh.
If I had to pick one to recommend - all of David Sedaris's books are extremely funny. He writes humorous personal essays, so I guess his books aren't really memoirs exactly (google says he's a humorist), but he usually writes about himself so I'm lumping him in this category lol. Me Talk Pretty One Day is a good place to start with his stuff - you will cry laughing.
I also love pop science and pop history - Mary Roach is a super approachable science writer with a quirky sense of humor. Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers is so funny and candid - she asks every question you've ever had about dead bodies and then some. I also love Bill Bryson - another very accessible and funny writer - I really loved his A Short History of Nearly Everything, which covers exactly what it says. I ADORE Oliver Sacks - he was a neurologist who wrote so movingly about what it means to be human through the experiences of his patients - The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat reads more like a book of short stories, and I weep like a baby every time I read it (I actually started tearing up thinking of a few cases.) (Btw he's also written beautiful memoirs but I like his science writing best so I'm putting him here. Bill Bryson has written memoir too.) Carl Sagan is also approachable and humane - This Demon Haunted World is my favorite of his. Andrew Solomon's The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression is required reading for anyone who's dealt with mental illness, although it's difficult and painful at times (his Far From the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity is also really good, but also difficult and painful - but worth it!)Diane Ackerman's A Natural History of the Senses has gorgeous prose and is a great book for artists and writers imo - it gets you thinking deeply about how we interact with the world.
For history, I am obsessed with this book called "The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity by David Graeber and David Wengrow - it will completely upend everything you think you know about the history of homo sapians. Mike Duncan got his start podcasting - his series Revolutions is about major world revolutions and is essentially like listening to an audiobook, so it's not a surprise his books are pretty fun too. Sarah Vowell has some really fun books about quirky historical topics - her Assassination Vacation is great (she goes on a roadtrip to visit locations in America where famous assassinations took place).
And here are a few other miscellaneous non-fiction writers I enjoy - Sebastian Junger (just finished his In My Time of Dying about his near death experience - super thought-provoking - but it was A Perfect Storm that made me love him), Hunter S. Thompson (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), Jon Krakauer (Into the Wild), Jon Ronson (The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry)
This was a fun question to think about! I hadn't realized I had such a strong preference for female writers until I actually listed all my favs out, which is an interesting thing to know about myself, so thanks for asking!

Thoughts on a wild High Potential pun kinda intended
hello critters
dude she said IN THE TANK!
where art thou, Romeo?
the tell-tale printer
why is everyone wearing patterns
an answer to the "manny" thing
missing frog that can't be good
Morgan in the vet's office with the snake tranq
and there's the frog
voice-command printer of course
someone's got a date!
seems like a good friend
forget good cop bad cop this is friend cop cop cop
Oz confirmed geek and that's a nice way to do the face-recognition-sketch-y, via The Avengers
I hate to be stereotypical but you get this guy's vibe from ex-con-turned-personal-trainer
Morgan quoting Selena seemingly verbatim (how neuroweird of her, I sometimes do similar things with quote-as-justification so people know their exact words)
those pills aren't what they look like
and busted
this guy's like a crazy dog person about a tarantula
oh so we have a second apartment
and the other team found a clue too
Oz is such a kid
gun...oh wait nevermind and now everyone's all at the secret apartment
there's a whole lot of illegally obtained critters including the supposedly incinerated spider
Morgan's mind working a million miles an hour and I'm getting Librarians flashbacks (to both Cassandra and Flynn)
there's the infodump-of-the-week-on-seemingly-random-yet-related-topic (pollinator gardens), I was starting to worry we weren't gonna get one
Karadec, they're les-bee-ans
that confession seemed a little too easy, what's the twist gonna be
ten metaphorical bucks says Karadec's an ISTJ (vibes, y'know)
the kids don't know they're helping
and Morgan's observational mind just went full on Criminal-Minds-y vision mode
it's all in Shane's face (in more ways than one)
nice little bit of date-crashing improv (potentially foreshadowing a thing)
so that's the a-plot b-plot thematic connection
ok holy soap opera
so it's not a representation fail as at least one was actual lesbian
that was not what the mom needed to hear
this is all about parental love it seems
and Morgan makes up with Ava and I was half-right about the pills
but why does Ava have what looks like not just a hat but a straw hat on her light
and tarantula and slightly eccentric owner are reunited (I presume Daphne and Oz told him what happened so he doesn't think she rose from the dead)
