Female Christ Figures are not common in movies, but Denmark has given us three of the best:- 1. The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928). Falconetti is stunning and Dreyer's Joan provides a vivid image of Christ that gives a very early film challenge to the fixation on Jesus’ maleness, and helps us to understand better what we really mean when we claim that God became human, like all of us - regardless of gender. 2. Babette's Feast (1987). Gabriel Axel uses Karen Blixen's story to give us this beautiful film in which Stéphane Audran is the eponymous suffering servant who sacrificially provides a 'last supper' so rich that it initially shocks, but eventually provides healing and forgiveness, to the 12 guests. 3. Breaking the Waves (1996). Controversial because of the sexual nature of the sacrifice Bess (Emily Watson) makes, but I still think Von Trier's powerful film raises serious issues in its clear Christ symbolism about a kind of suffering men (including me) can never understand, but God does. 4. Holy hell— KOKO-DI KOKO-DA is a quietly disturbing fable about grief & trauma. It's presented as a twisted, unsettling psychological horror about a married couple mourning the death of their daughter, who, three years later, encounter a horrifying sideshow troupe in the woods. I rarely ever cry in movies. Rarely. Ever. But I cried in Ordet. A good, small cry but real tears nonetheless. Ordet starts slow as molasses, it’s strange and at some points unnerving. Multiple times I thought, what’s the point of this, where’s this going, or what’s he (director Carl Theodor Dreyer) trying to say? And yet as the film continued it somehow became more familiar and powerful. By the end of the film, the last line is spoken and the film fades to black accompanied by one of the rare moments of music, I simply sat there. The room was dark. The music played on. And I didn’t want to move. I wanted to sit in Ordet as long as I could, knowing if I got up the spell would wear off and I would have to accept the normal work day that awaited me in a matter of hrs. Do miracles happen?.... we sailed from Copenhagen , where Danish director Carl Theodore Dreyer was born (and died). I brought my copy of Ordet (1955) with me - Dreyer's brilliant exploration of whether modern, rational people can still believe in miracles. The conclusion (with which I agree) is yes. Dreyer's "spiritual realism" is not for everyone (lots of theological chat) but Ordet is superbly filmed and justifiably No.1 on the Arts&Faith spiritual film list. Dreyer was a Lutheran but I took this picture by Copenhagen's 'English Church" which was finished in 1887, two years before Dreyer was born.
