Carl Theodor Dreyer - Ordet (1955) If Dreyer had only directed The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) he would already be an absolute legend, much like his lead actress in that film, Renée Jeanne Falconetti became having only acted in that masterpiece. But he didn't, he also directed one of the strangest and most atmospheric vampire films of all time with Vampyr (1932) and then over 20 years later he directs another masterpiece with Ordet. Apparently there should be little in common between this Christian fable and his previous films, but this is not the case. There is here a deliberate pace which almost lulls you into complacency, the film starts out so slowly and strangely that it is almost comedic, the crazy Christ-like figure of the brother spouting biblical verses, the farm setting, the grumpy old man and the loving couple, all speak slowly, often turned towards the camera instead of each other. It could almost look like a caricature of "serious European cinema". However, the longer you stay with the film the more engrossed you get, the more you get used to its rhythm and eventually when the great emotional hits come they hit hard. Like they did in Joan of Arc, they are also beautifully shot and eerie as they were in Vampyr. No one else could have done this but Dreyer, his hand is here in the camera movements, in the close-ups of beautifully lit faces, on the stark but perfectly filmed sets. It's a film to be lived, any plot synopsis can kind of make it feel ridiculous, as merely a Christian allegory, but it's so much more than that. Beautiful stuff. Do miracles happen?.... we sailed from Copenhagen , where Danish director Carl Theodore Dreyer was born (and died). I brought my copy of Ordet (1955) with me - Dreyer's brilliant exploration of whether modern, rational people can still believe in miracles. The conclusion (with which I agree) is yes. Dreyer's "spiritual realism" is not for everyone (lots of theological chat) but Ordet is superbly filmed and justifiably No.1 on the Arts&Faith spiritual film list. Dreyer was a Lutheran but I took this picture by Copenhagen's 'English Church" which was finished in 1887, two years before Dreyer was born. It's beauty reminds us that mostly God amazes us through Her/His created order (including film) - but that doesn't rule out the occasional genuine miracle. . . . . #miracles #copenhagen #englishchurch #stalbanscopenhagen #carltheodoredreyer #ordet #ordetmovie #filmbuff #filmfan #filmstagram #moviebuff #moviestagram #cinéaste #cineaste #cinephile #filmsandfaith #arts&faith #artsandfaith #danishfilm #anglican #lutheran (at St. Alban's Church, Copenhagen) https://www.instagram.com/p/BoLTDcYltts/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=uzyja0djwi05
