A one shot I’ve been working on off and on. I like how it turned out.

You’d dropped out of high school on a cold day in winter, running away until the cold air burned your lungs, making your asthma flare up, and as you looked for a bus, dragging what little belongings you had behind you, you wheezed. You were sixteen, a couple years away from adulthood. You just had to evade social services in that amount of time.

You ended up coughing and hacking in your seat, lungs protesting, but making eye contact with no one. The heat on the bus settled your lungs, and when you arrived in New York after many days' travel, you found a job willing to pay you under the table as a minor.

You never looked back, working at a bakery now in New York City, getting by just barely, and no medical insurance. But you didn’t complain. It was better than the beatings, you thought looking at your scarred hands. “Please, grandad. I’ll behave.” You remembered begging after he’d tried to touch you.

You were twenty six, and with nothing to say for your life. You’d never been to college, and had no great achievements. But you were happy, and that was what mattered.

A man at least several years older than you, liked to come in and order a danish, and a coffee, straight black. He wore tailored suits, and had slicked back dark hair, shaved on the sides. He had a beard, and you itched to touch it, to feel it between your thighs. “You look like you’ve got the wiles of the Devil.” You’d blurted after staring at him a few seconds, struck by his handsomeness, before apologizing profusely.

He’d chuckled, and it went down your spine like velvet sliding over a dagger. His voice was deep, but soft. “If only you knew, bunny.”

“Bunny?” You asked, tilting your head.

He pointed to the bunny pin on your shirt, and you laughed quietly. You’d bought the pin as a splurge. It had been a few dollars.

“You’re not from New York.” He said, and you wondered how he knew. “Your accent.” He clarified.

“I’m just a farm girl from the Midwest. Nothin’ interesting.” You said dully.

He looked at your hands, before taking a sip of his coffee. “I doubt that, bunny.”

You’d found yourself daydreaming about the man in the tailored suit after his words. As though you were interesting to him, a dull girl who spent her life milking cows and chasing chickens. You wondered what his kiss would taste like. Probably bitter like the coffee he drank. What his touch would feel like. It was those moments you realized just how lonely you were, desperate for attention and companionship.

“Hi, Billy.” You said cheerfully as he came in one day.

“Hi, bunny.” He said, amused by your eagerness.

“Coffee, black, right. And a cherry danish?” You asked.

“Mhm.” He hummed, hand in his pocket.

You got his coffee ready, and slipped a cookie in his bag with his danish. You didn’t want anything in return, only his attention.

Your heart raced as you gave it to him. He smiled as though he knew. “Have a good day, bunny.” He thought you were sweet, gentle, tender. All the things he craved.

Your cheeks burned.

“You’re my favorite patron.” You confessed one day, handing him his coffee, admiring his pink cheeks from the cold.

His lips had turned up, as he silently took his coffee, dark eyes almost black, sparkling.

He pulled something out of his pocket, pushing it towards you. It was a little toy bunny, and your heart stuttered. It was white, with pink feet, and a pink nose. “You’re my favorite baker, bunny.” He teased you, before taking his coffee and walking away.

He had that thick New York accent which drew you in, being from the Midwest yourself. He had a darkness in his eyes that made you shiver with a thrill at catching his attention, his dark pits turning to you. Choosing you.

He noticed your scarred hands, looking like he wanted to comment. Unbeknownst to you, he admired them knowing most scars were a sign you’d survived, you’d fought. He’d been angry when he read the police report on you when he looked into you. Your hands cut up with a broken vodka bottle. All because you didn’t want grandfather's advances.

Like Billy had fought advances at eleven years old. He could still remember the pain exploding in his shoulder. The helplessness. The rage.

But you were just a poor farm girl from the Midwest, on the run from an abusive grandfather, you thought. And Billy was a status above you. What would you have in common, you thought dully. Your heart squeezed, you’d never wanted something more than you wanted him, you thought playing with the bunny he’d given you in your pocket. All because he’d given you his attention.

You continued giving him an oatmeal raisin cookie on the house, discreetly. Your way of showing affection. But not so discreet, you soon realized.

After a few weeks of this, he hummed, taking the cookie and pocketing it, “You always give free cookies out to patrons, bunny?” He asked, lips forming a wry grin.

You felt your cheeks heat up, “I’m sorry, sir.”

He smiled, “For your favorite patron, huh?” He kept every cookie. No one had ever given him something so freely. Even as a boy, adults scorned him. He’d been a nuisance to them. He’d been invisible.

And even now, women only loved him for his beauty and wealth, you were just kind, expecting nothing in return.

It was a cold day in winter, and instead of running from something, you were running headlong into something. Only you didn’t know exactly how much he’d watched you. Fantasized about coming home to you, kissing you. How pretty you’d look in the morning waking up next to him.

He’d have someone to come home to. Proof he wasn’t just some asshole who thought he could have the good things in life.

He could have something good, like Frank had Maria and the kids.

He’d never had such domestic thoughts before, but goddamn he liked you, wanted to make you his.

And that he always intended to make you his all along. His sweet little rabbit. And he would understand poverty and being unwanted better than anyone else. Understand being touched without consent, and fighting for autonomy, with the scars as proof.

You were kindred spirits, of that he was certain.

perth day 2 🤭

yesterday our flight got delayed 3 hours (THANK YOU SCOOT!) so we reached our hotel really late. did nothing. forgot to take a fit pic today so you get this

today we woke up at 7am to drive to margaret river... stopped at a small town called cowaramup and saw many cows and also sheep. and look at this golden hour ass photo i got of my tomato danish???? photography at its finest i took it all by myself guys no filter

then we went to the CAVES!!! so so cool i love caves i would live here if i could. also we got to touch a glowing piece of stalagmite

and at the end the guide switched off ALL the lights in the cave and i feel like this is what they mean when they say the blind see nothing because like. it really was nothing omg

on the drive to our airbnb we saw a tiny lil kangaroo by the side of the road

by 5+ the sun had completely set and the roads have no streetlamps so that was fun while trying to get to our airbnb in the middle of the woods :) second photo is our backyard. how fun

anyway this airbnb has EVERYTHING like every single facility ever (except soap. the bathrooms are completely barren)

the only man of our group cooked us dinner and drove us everywhere 😌 (all 4 of us girls came to visit him it's like a harem fr) anyway we are probably gonna play board games and watch a movie (this airbnb has SO many games and movies) after this hehe goodnight

Denmark is willing to destroy its agriculture sector in the name of climate change. Adhering tightly to Agenda 2030 and the Paris Accord, the nation plans to reduce 70% of all emissions by 2030 before becoming climate neutral in 2050. The latest initiative intends to revert 10% to 15% of the country’s farmlands back to nature.

The government already ensured that meat production would decrease by taxing cattle, with a 672 krone ($145) tax per cow. The government has paid for scientists to back these claims and falsified studies that state that gardening or owning livestock of any kind threatens the existence of planet Earth. Like COVID, we are blindly forced to trust “the science” when it is clear propaganda.  The dairy cow population is down about 546,800, declining 1.74% from 2022 to 2023, and the nation hosts 2.5% of all dairy cows in the European Union. About 3.6% of all milk consumed in the EU comes from Denmark. Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said this tax will increase every year, and the tax will rise to 1680 krone by 2035.

Agriculture composes 22% of Denmark’s total exports, producing enough food to feed 15 million people annually. Farmer-owned cooperates account for 90% of dairy and cattle production. However, there is a lack of transparency regarding land laws in Denmark, and the government will use those loosened regulations to expedite Agenda 2030.

The government plans to bribe people out of their land, to begin with, but then it will become more authoritarian. If it can’t tax the people out of their land, it may simply seize the land. Section 73 of the Danish Constitution and the Danish Expropriation Act say land may be expropriated for an array of reasons, including conservation projects.

In Cinderella Tales from Around the World, I've now reached the various Donkeyskin tales from Scandinavia: Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland.

*In these versions, the king typically seeks a new bride who fits his late wife's wedding dress, or all her clothes. Of course, only his daughter does. Or in one alternate version, there's no requirement, but the princess puts on her mother's dress just as an heirloom, and her father sees for the first time how much she resembles her mother and resolves to marry her.

*The heroine's advisor who helps her escape is sometimes a red cow, sometimes an old woman or an old man, and sometimes her mother's spirit. Or sometimes she relies on her own cunning.

**It's nice to see versions where the mother's spirit helps her daughter, as in so many Cinderella tales. It's a refreshing contrast to other Donkeyskin tales that partly blame the mother for her daughter's plight, since on her deathbed she makes the father promise to only remarry a bride who resembles her.

*The heroine's disguise is typically a cloak of either crow skins or, less comfortably, crows' bills. Although in one version it's just a generic cloak of feathers, in a few others it's a fur cloak, in another it's a wooden cloak, and in one Finnish version, The Pig Girl, she puts on a pigskin, which magically turns her into a pig, recalling the bear transformation in Italy's The She-Bear.

*In Danish versions, there are typically just two beautiful gowns instead of three: one silver, one gold. This is sometimes true in other countries' versions too. Still, most other versions have three gowns, with the standard themes of sun, moon, and stars, or with some other themes (e.g. flowers, precious metals and stones, and the sun, moon, and stars; or silk flowers, golden flowers, and diamonds). Although oddly, in one Danish version and one Finnish version, the dress made of crows' bills is her elegant dress, not her ugly disguise, and it's her only one, which she wears repeatedly.

**In another Finnish version, The Three Dresses, the king demands the gold and silver gowns and the crow's-bill cloak of the princess rather than vice-versa. He promises that if she can acquire them, she won't have to marry him; her mother's spirit gives the clothes to her, but the king goes back on his word, so she runs away.

*The Danish variants include two without an incestuous father. In one, the king just refuses to let his daughter marry the prince she loves, so she runs away to be a servant at that prince's castle, while in another, the princess is an orphan betrothed to a prince she dislikes.

*In most of these versions, the princess becomes a scullery maid at the prince's palace, though occasionally she becomes a poultry-maid or a swineherd instead.

*Some versions include the theme of the prince throwing items at the disguised princess, others don't.

*Usually the princess wears her gowns to church rather than to balls, though a few versions have a banquet instead, or have her follow the prince when he goes to visit some other nobility.

*In a few versions, the princess's helper gives her some magic that does her chores for her, so her life as a servant isn't too hard.

*As in the Scandinavian Cinderella stories, the princes typically chats "Darkness behind me, light before!" to prevent anyone from stopping her when she leaves the church or the ball. Sometimes she also chants it when she first runs away from home to prevent her father from finding her.

*Almost all these variants have a Cinderella ending: the princess loses a shoe and the prince tries it on every maiden until he finds her. In Finland's The Pig Girl, as in some Finnish Cinderella tales, she loses her hat, her glove, and her shoe, and none of them fit anyone except her (and they fit her even in her pig form).

*In The Pig Girl, the king pursues his daughter when she runs away. But at the instruction of her mother's spirit, she throws a brush, a comb, and a mirror behind her, which turn into different kinds of walls that no one can scale.

*Also in The Pig Girl, after the shoe, glove, and hat fit the pig, the prince reluctantly agrees to marry her, because he gave his word that he would marry the girl who could wear them. Still, he comically mutters his disgruntled feelings to himself as they approach the church for the wedding. But then she changes herself back into her true human form, and he's delighted.

**I wouldn't be surprised if this inspired the ending of Sapsorrow from Jim Henson's The Storyteller, which also has a slipper-fitting, and which has the prince agree to marry "the Scraggletag" before her true form is revealed.

**This also reminds me of the scene in The Magic Flute where Papageno is coerced into agreeing to marry the "ugly old woman," only to be delighted when she takes off her disguise to reveal that she's really Papagena. Now I wonder if Emanuel Schikaneder, the librettist, might have known some version of this tale and been inspired by it. Especially because in the original stage directions of The Magic Flute, when the "old woman" first declares her love for Papageno, the disgusted Papageno throws the water she brought him in her face (though whether to avoid getting the stage floor wet or to make Papageno more likable, this is rarely done in modern performances of the opera). The prince throws water at the disguised heroine in many Donkeyskin tales, including The Pig Girl. And in several Donkeyskin tales from Italy, the heroine disguises herself as an old woman. Might Schikaneder have been inspired by some Austrian version of the tale?

A world-first emissions tax is going after gassy cattle. (Washington Post)

Denmark is set to impose the world’s first emissions tax on livestock beginning in 2030, targeting greenhouse gases emitted by the country’s cows, pigs and sheep.

According to the plan, farmers would pay about $43 per metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent produced by their livestock. That rate would increase to about $108 in 2035. The levies would be partially offset by a 60 percent tax deduction, rendering them closer to $17 per metric ton in 2030 and $43 in 2035, according to the Danish government, which unveiled the proposed bill this week.

Danish officials project that the tax would cut the country’s emissions by about 1.8 million metric tons (about 2 million tons) of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2030. Humans emitted more than 40 billion tons of carbon dioxide in 2022, according to the MIT Climate Portal.

“We will be the first country in the world to introduce a real [carbon dioxide equivalent tax] on agriculture. Other countries will be inspired by it,” Danish Tax Minister Jeppe Bruus said in a statement. “The agreement shows how much we can achieve when we come together across party colors and interests to find joint solutions to one of the greatest challenges of our time.”

The deal between the center-right government and representatives of groups including farmers, the industry and unions was reached Monday, according to the Associated Press. Farmers across Europe have, for months, been protesting cuts to subsidies and new regulations, some of them designed to reduce climate-changing emissions, The Washington Post reported.

Proceeds from Denmark’s proposed tax — which is expected to be approved by the country’s parliament, as it was written with broad support — for 2030-31 will be returned to the industry to support its green transition, the government said, with the handling of proceeds to be revisited in 2032. The bill also includes the establishment of more than 600,000 acres of new forest areas, among other initiatives.

the symbolism saga continues! this post is just for third life, because if i did them all in one post it would be way too long. i already made posts about symbols for the top three and the losers. everyone else has animal symbols! i chose based on symbolism, looks, names, behavior, or game events. or just vibes.

cleo is an african lion. they represent leadership, power, and courage, which works well for the queen of the crastle.

skizz is a mourning dove. skizz is one of the few who has consistent symbols. i adore fallen angel imagery for him, so i chose to make him different types of doves. this specific one is mostly for the name, as ren used the skizz blade in his name after his death.

joel is a eurasian wolf. i couldn't give the wolf king anything other than a wolf, but i don't really have a reason for the eurasian one other than vibes.

scott is an adonis blue butterfly. i wanted a butterfly because of the flower valley, and i chose this one for the name! the greek myth of adonis is about a lost lover (well, it's about a lot more than that but that's the only relevant part) who was turned into a flower, which i thought was perfect.

etho is an awassi sheep. i had to give him a sheep because of the wool fortress, and this one looked the coolest.

tango is a danish red cattle. same as etho, i wanted to give him a cow because of his (brief) monopoly, and this one looked the most fitting.

ren is an arctic wolf. he's the other one who stays consistent, because he really can't be anything other than a wolf or dog. i chose arctic for the red winter.

martyn is an arctic fox. i wanted an arctic animal for red winter, and i feel martyn is very fox like. plus, their dens are very similar to how dogwarts was set up.

impulse is a coast mole. he's referred to as a mole quite a few times. i chose the coast mole for the vibes.

bigb is a white-tailed jackrabbit. this one is almost entirely vibes. it is solitary, and he was very isolated throughout the series.
