What on earth was going on last night (in chess)?
Almost every player had jet lag to some extent. Somehow more so than when it was hosted in Uzbekistan 1 or 2 years ago.
Daniil Dubov and Magnus Carlsen had jet lag so bad that they lost the chances to become the undisputed champion.
When set 7 of the Grand Final was played, it was 01:15 Norwegian time. But it was primetime in NYC. So when I could feel through the TV broadcasts that Carlsen was so sleepy he almost slumped over the board, there's no indications at all that he would've overcome any of the jet lag.
Carlsen seemed to have 3 different haircuts that he rotated between during the 2 tournaments. A nice touch.
Hans Niemann is pissed again, this time for perfectly good reasons.
Sure the Manhattan marble hall was pretty, but the Final 8 with Magnus-Niemann could've sold out MetLife Stadium. 86,000 spectators would've kept the players much more awake than the ballroom's 80 spectators.
While NRK1 did the post-final interviews, the Chess.com Twitch commentators were beyond confused. The guy on the right having NRK1's stream open on his end and understanding what was being discussed, didn't make them much less confused. Their LeBron James Game 7 double overtime analogy sort-of worked.
Earlier that night the NRK studio struggled for an hour, throughout the semis, to figure out what "rizz", "skibidi", and "sigma" meant. Even when a 2nd studio explained it to them did the main studio's brains get boiled, leading to them discussing things like "the alpha zero pawn".

so my singular and closest amigo is like a huge f1 fan which is kinda wild & random ( but not really bc everyone loves louis hamilton even if his first name is sir or smth i really dont know ) and seeing her engage in fandom has been subliminally brainwashing me so i had the thought:
there's seemingly not a centralized chess fandom on tumblr, but chess has seen an exponential boom in popularity, globally, and ppl do make posts abt the players, like you little freaks are out there. so as someone whose more into chess than the average bloke and has been for like a year and a half (and would thusly be able to talk abt the games and memes), i dont know why we aren't collectively sharing in the parasocial part of chess.
like there's so much drama all the time, friggin bum beads are now a core part of the lore, bobby fischer exists, gotham covers games literally daily like you can unclench levy its ok, magnus is always fckn about, hikaru fought some guy he lost a game to a couple of years ago, every dubov clip i've seen is him saying smth unhinged or doing like 1 million pull ups and he looks like he's my age but he's like TWENTY SEVEN HELLO?!, rapport and ding are the people's couple etc etc
like why are we not having fun with this lol?
as with all things, i've been influenced, and in my sleep deprived state i think its the perfect opportunity to cause more damage to tumblr :)
so do ur thing you animals, let's actually make this happen, lets make chess fun and cringe and creative and equally as involved as its youtube / video counterparts reflect — if anyone wants to be moots just comment or follow me! :D

Bengaluru: Magnus Carlsen returned to the tournament in jeans and played Hans Niemann, Vassily Ivanchuk audibly sobbed after a loss, 46th seed Aravindh Chithambaram defeated world No.3 Hikaru Nakamura and Daniil Dubov forfeited his game because he reportedly overslept – the penultimate day of the World Rapid and Blitz tournament (blitz section) wasn’t short of drama. GM Vaishali Rameshbabu (L) dominated the women’s standingswith eight wins and three draws to qualify for the knockouts (PTI) It was also a day that saw Indian GM Vaishali Rameshbabu dominate the women’s standings – with a stellar count of eight wins and three draws – after 11 rounds – to make the knockouts. She will face Zhu Jiner, who qualified for the knockouts in eighth place, in the quarter-finals. The 23-year-old was the only Indian to make the knockouts across the open and women’s sections. She did so with a round to spare and is a full point ahead of the rest of the field. “It was completely unexpected…I don’t think I’m a great blitz player, honestly. There are many more strong players who are here. I think today I was just lucky in many games and it just worked,” said Vaishali, who finished Stage 1 of the blitz with a score of 9.5/11. Eight players each in the open and women’s sections made it through to the knockouts, which will consist of four-game matches in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. After walking away from the tournament midway over being pulled up for wearing jeans, world No.1 Carlsen returned to play the blitz event after Fide president Arkady Dvorkovich intervened and eased the dress code. Carlsen showed up in jeans for Day 1 of the blitz event and has reportedly got a jeans business deal out of the whole denim fiasco. G-Star has reportedly signed the Norwegian former world champion and he is expected to appear in their ads from 2025. Several other players too showed up in jeans for their games on Monday and fellow Norwegian Aryan Tari even went jeans shopping with Carlsen on the tournament rest day on Sunday. Carlsen won his first two rounds and laughed out loud after he messed up a winning pawn endgame and unwittingly fell for a stalemate trick in his round 3 game against GM Benjamin Bok. Carlsen will interestingly face Niemann again in the quarterfinals. Ten players ended up on 9.5 points in the Swiss standings with two – Daniel Naroditsky and Dubov – being eliminated in tiebreaks. Dubov didn’t turn up for his Round 10 game against Niemann, handing the American GM a win by forfeit. “I went to my hotel room to quickly prepare, then I fell asleep. When I woke up, it was too late. I didn’t make it. I want to continue the tournament. It was bad luck,” Dubov told NRK. He won his remaining three games of the day. Players who qualified for the knockouts: Open: Ian Nepomniachtchi 9.5/13, Fabiano Caruana 9.5/13, Magnus Carlsen 9.5/13, Wesley So 9.5/13, Alireza Firouzja 9.5/13, Hans Niemann 9.5/13, Jan-Krzysztof Duda 9.5/13, Volodar Murzin 9.5/13 Women: Vaishali Rameshbabu 9.5/11, Lei Tingjie 8.5/11, Kateryna Lagno 8/11, Valentina Gunina 8/11, Ju Wenjun 8/11, Carissa Yip 8/11, Bibisara Assaubayeva 8/11, Zhu Jiner 8/11.

[ad_1] Magnus Carlsen in action against Arjun Erigaisi at the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid Tournament. (PC: Tata Steel Chess India) Magnus Carlsen was on a roll. Three consecutive victories on Day 2 of the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid Tournament saw him take the sole lead in the Open section. In the Women’s section, Aleksandra Goryachkina was similarly dominant, securing three wins on the spin to move to 5 points, and firmly in the lead. It was a day of some top-class chess action. Carlsen started the day half-a-point behind overnight leader Nodirbek Abdusattorov. First, he got the better of SL Narayanan followed by a win over Wesley So and then he outsmarted Arjun Erigaisi. The Norwegian grandmaster raced to 5 points out of a possible 6 and on top of the leaderboard. A master was at work. Abdusattorov, with 4.5 points, is snapping at Carlsen’s heels. The Uzbek prodigy drew with Nihal Sarin and Vidit Gujrathi in rounds 4 and 5 respectively before ending the day with a win over Narayanan. He is nicely placed to challenge Carlsen on the final day of the Rapid event. As for Goryachkina, her back-to-back wins against India’s Vantika Agrawal and Vaishali R helped her get into the groove before she rounded off the day with a victory over Kateryna Lagno. Georgian Grandmaster Nana Dzagnidze is in the second position with 4 points. She won against Vaishali and Humpy Koneru, and drew with Lagno. Standings at the end of Day 2 MEN: MAGNUS CARLSEN – 5 NODIRBEK ABDUSATTOROV – 4.5 WESLEY SO – 3.5 DANIIL DUBOV – 3 R PRAGGNANANDHAA – 3 S L NARAYANAN – 2.5 VINCENT KEYMER – 2.5 ARJUN ERIGAISI – 2 NIHAL SARIN – 2 VIDIT GUJRATHI – 2 WOMEN: ALEKSANDRA GORYACHKINA – 5 NANA DZAGNIDZE – 4 VANTIKA AGARWAL – 3.5 HARIKA DRONAVALLI – 3.5 VALENTINA GUNINA – 3.5 KATERYNA LAGNO – 3 DIVYA DESHMUKH – 2.5 KONERU HUMPY – 2 ALEXANDRA KOSTENIUK – 2 VAISHALI R – 1 The post Carlsen saunters into sole lead, dominant display from Goryachkina appeared first on Sports News Portal | Latest Sports Articles | Revsports.
