StEx Appreciation Month Day 14: Hoppers
Favourite Actor Hopper 1: Cyrus Brandon. Hopper 2: Christopher Jeffers. Hopper 3: Daniel Therrien. Favourite Songs/Scenes I don’t have a favourite but I like watching them in Poppa’s Blues. Favourite Costumes I don’t have a favourite but I dislike the US Tour costumes… Favourite Ships I don’t have any that I actively ship to be honest. Headcanons I headcanon that they’re that interested in all the racing stuff. Unpopular Opinions I think it’s popular to hate on them. I do think they’re cringe, but I also believe they had potential.
Photo 1: Joel Hewlett as Hopper 3, Aaron Piper as Hopper 1, Sharn Te Pou as Hopper 2 - New Zealand Tour 2009. The real estate company behind some of Canada's most popular shopping centres embedded cameras inside its digital information kiosks at 12 shopping malls in major Canadian cities to collect millions of images — and used facial recognition technology without customers' knowledge or consent — according to a new investigation by the federal, Alberta and B.C. privacy commissioners.
"Shoppers had no reason to expect their image was being collected by an inconspicuous camera, or that it would be used, with facial recognition technology, for analysis," said federal Privacy Commissioner Daniel Therrien in a statement.
"The lack of meaningful consent was particularly concerning given the sensitivity of biometric data, which is a unique and permanent characteristic of our body and a key to our identity."

On Tuesday, Privacy commissioner Daniel Therrien found the Canadian Border Services Agency violated the law when examining devices at the border. This mainly included viewing travellers’ cellphones and laptops.
Vancouver immigration lawyer Richard Kurland explains this isn’t surprising.
“The report properly points out that technology is reigning supreme, into a kind of surveillance capitalism. Big business exploits technology. Gone between the cracks are individual privacy rights,” he tells NEWS 1130. “The difficulty is that technology develops, business exploits technology, the government falls far, far behind, and the legal system is at a place behind the government.”
He advises everyone to protect themselves when travelling across the border since the federal government can’t stay on top of all the searches.
“There is no secret sauce; magic recipe, when it comes to big government or border crossings. Those are kind of, information retrieval, free-of-consent zones.”
When it comes to finding a long-term solution, Kurland says he wants an ombudsperson to look into the complaints regarding border agents.
“One of the largest law enforcement bodies in all Canada — CBSA — still goes without the public interest of scrutiny,” he says.

Canada’s privacy czar is taking Facebook to court after finding the social-media giant’s lax practices allowed personal information to be used for political purposes.
A long-awaited joint report from privacy commissioner Daniel Therrien and his British Columbia counterpart, Michael McEvoy, uncovered major shortcomings in Facebook’s procedures and called for stronger laws to protect Canadians.
The commissioners expressed dismay Thursday that Facebook had rebuffed their findings and recommendations.
“It is completely unacceptable,” Therrien told a news conference, lamenting his office’s lack of enforcement powers. “I cannot, as a regulator, insist that they act responsibly.”

Québec Solidaire loses Rouyn-Noranda seat as voters opt for more nuanced approach to smelter pollution
Québec Solidaire loses Rouyn-Noranda seat as voters opt for more nuanced approach to smelter pollution
For many voters in Rouyn-Noranda, Que., a primary concern in this week’s election was getting control of toxic emissions coming from the Horne copper smelter. But instead of re-electing the left-leaning, environmentalist Québec Solidaire MNA Émilise Lessard-Therrien, they opted for the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) candidate, Daniel Bernard, a former mining executive. Isn't it insane that this company broke so many laws internationally and still exists?
[Alt text: Screenshot of a Wikipedia article reading: In August 2020, The New York Times reported that Clearview had hired First Amendment and Pentagon Papers lawyer Floyd Abrams. Abrams has argued 13 cases in front of the Supreme Court of the United States, most notably Citizens United v. FEC, and stated that the issue of privacy rights versus free speech in the First Amendment could reach the Supreme Court. In July 2020, Clearview AI announced that it was pulling out of the Canadian market amidst joint investigations into the company and the use of its product by police forces. Daniel Therrien, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada condemned Clearview AI's use of scraped biometric data: "What Clearview does is mass surveillance and it is illegal. It is completely unacceptable for millions of people who will never be implicated in any crime to find themselves continually in a police lineup." In June 2021, Therrien found that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police had broken Canadian privacy law through hundreds of illegal searches using Clearview AI. In January 2021, Clearview AI's biometric photo database was deemed illegal in the EU by the Hamburg data protection authority (DPA). The deletion of a affected person's biometric data was ordered. The authority stated that GDPR is applicable despite the fact that Clearview AI has no European branch. In March 2020, they had requested Clearview AI's customer list, as data protection obligations would also apply to the customers. The data protection advocacy organization NOYB criticized the DPA's decision as the DPA issued an order protecting only the individual complainant instead of an order banning the collection of any European resident's photos. In November 2021, Clearview received a provisional notice by the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) to stop processing its citizens' data citing a range of alleged breaches. The company was also notified of a potential fine of approximately $22.6 million. Clearview claimed that the ICO's allegations were factually inaccurate which it would consider appealing as the company "does not do business in the UK, and does not have any UK customers at this time." The ICO released a statement that a final determination on Clearview would be occur until mid-2022. The BBC reported on 23 May that the company had been fined "more than £7.5m by the UK's privacy watchdog and told to delete the data of UK residents." In May 2022, Clearview agreed to settle a 2020 lawsuit from the ACLU, which prohibited the sale of its facial recognition database to private individuals and businesses. Clearview paid $250,000 in legal fees and agreed to limit its 20 billion facial photo database to government agencies. In May 2022, Clearview was ordered to delete all data belonging to UK residents’ facial recognition data by the country’s privacy watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office (IOC). Additionally, the ICO fined Clearview £7.5 million for failing to follow the UK’s data protection laws. This fine marked the fourth of its type placed on Clearview, after similar orders and fines issued from Australia, France, and Italy. /EndID]

What does Tim Hortons think your data is worth? A coffee and donut apparently
What does Tim Hortons think your data is worth? A coffee and donut, apparently What does Tim Hortons think your data is worth? A coffee and donut, apparently Business sign of a Tim Horton’s cafeteria. | Photo by Roberto Machado Noa/LightRocket via Getty Images Tim Hortons, the Canadian fast food chain accused of using its mobile app to collect “vast amounts of sensitive location data” in violation of Canadian privacy laws, says it’s reached a proposed settlement in the resulting class action lawsuits, Vice reports. To make up for tracking users, recording their movements “every few minutes” even when the app was closed, the chain is proposing to give affected users… a free hot beverage and a free baked good worth a little under $9 CAD plus tax. Customers started receiving emails detailing the proposed settlement on Friday, and screenshots were posted to Twitter by James McLeod. “You are receiving this email in connection with a proposed settlement, subject to Court approval, of a national class action lawsuit involving the Tim Hortons app and the collection of geolocation data between April 1, 2019, and September 30, 2020,” the email reads. “As part of the proposed settlement agreement, eligible app users will receive a free hot beverage and a free baked good.” This has gotta go in a textbook or something. pic.twitter.com/ibSPFLl0km — James McLeod (@jamespmcleod) July 29, 2022 As well as offering the drink and snack (which hold a retail value of $6.19 CAD and $2.39 CAD plus taxes respectively), Tim Hortons has also committed to permanently deleting all geolocation about group members. Crucially, however, the restaurant chain tells Global News that the proposed settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing, and that the allegations have not been proven in a court of law. The allegations surfaced in a report from the National Post, when a reporter found that the app had tracked their location over 2,700 times in under five months. A subsequent investigation by Canadian privacy watchdogs said that although the app asked for location tracking permission, it misled users into thinking they would only be tracked while using the app. Instead, they were allegedly tracked throughout their day, allowing Tim Hortons to infer where they lived, where they worked, and to analyze when they visited competing restaurants or major sporting venues. The company had initially planned to use this information for targeted advertising, but ended up using it to analyze user trends, like working out when they may have switched to rival coffee chains. “Tim Hortons clearly crossed the line by amassing a huge amount of highly sensitive information about its customers,” Canada’s privacy commissioner Daniel Therrien said when the report was released. “Following people’s movements every few minutes of every day was clearly an inappropriate form of surveillance.” “We’re pleased to have reached a proposed settlement, subject to Court approval, in the four class action lawsuits in Quebec, British Columbia and Ontario involving the Tim Hortons app,” a spokesperson for the chain told Vice. “As part of the proposed settlement agreement, eligible app users will receive a free hot beverage and a free baked good.” “All parties agree this is a fair settlement and we look forward to the Superior Court of Quebec’s decision on the proposal. We are confident that pending the Quebec court’s approval of the settlement, the courts in British Columbia and Ontario will recognize the settlement,” they said. https://ift.tt/XhCJ0BO https://ift.tt/6h5z3lD

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 20, 2020 – ANISHINAABE AND DAKOTA TERRITORY, MB
The Grand Chief of the Southern Chiefs’ Organization is standing by NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh for calling out racism and police use of force in Canada while requesting more RCMP accountability. The Grand Chief also commended Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for supporting Singh.
“We all have a responsibility to call out racism when we see it,” said Grand Chief Jerry Daniels. “Canada is not exempt from systemic racism and the unjust use of police force.”
In recent weeks, police across Canada have come under scrutiny for their treatment of Indigenous and black communities and peoples. In New Brunswick, the RCMP shot and killed Chantel Moore and Rodney Levi, both First Nation members. Video of the beating of Chief Allan Adam by RCMP in Alberta came to light recently, as did footage of an RCMP officer hitting an Inuk man with the door of his vehicle. In a span of only 10 days in the spring of 2020, Jason Collins, Stewart Kevin Andres, and Eishia Hudson, all Indigenous, were fatally shot by Winnipeg police officers.
“We have seen too many tragic killings of our people,” said Grand Chief Daniels. “It’s time to stop systemic racism everywhere and within every police force, including the RCMP.”
This week, Singh presented a House of Commons motion recognizing the existence of systemic racism in the RCMP. The motion also asked Members of Parliament (MP) to support a review of the RCMP’s budget, and to demand the RCMP release all of its use-of-force reports. Bloc MP Alain Therrien was the only one to vote against the bill and Singh called him a racist.
Grand Chief Daniels noted there are questions about RCMP funding, as the budget for the RCMP in Quebec grew by 34 per cent according to the most recent budget breakdown by Statistics Canada. While there are more than 900 RCMP officers in Quebec, the force does little community policing and no municipal policing, and the Sûreté du Québec provides provincial services.
