A recent realization from reading Deleuze is the value of the virtual (vs. the actual) on its own. If dreams, inspirations and passions are not evaluated against the golden rule of actualization but as "a nice thing to have existed", so many things will be worth doing.
Along this line, I've been thinking (dreaming) of a question: what are the courses I would like to teach in the future? This not to say I'm ready to teach them, but a time stamp of the things that inspires me and make me curious. So far I thought of:
Creative Academic Writing
I'm still very much in love with Tim Ingold's writing as affective text. Although not as literate in reading literature (I envy my boys so much for their education nowadays), I always love to read all sorts of books on writing (lol). Yesterday I flipped through Lauren Fournier's book on autotheory, and thinking of citation as part of the narrative opens up so many possibilities.
It's funny that humanities are openning up to new forms of writing, while design self-censor for ligitimacy as science. A quick search shows that this term "Creative Academic Writing" is already out there. Definitely something I would like to explore more
Philosophy and design, or philosophy of design
I'm envious of the small group of people in organizational studies who are into philosophy and found each other as a group. People like Robert Chia, Chris Steyaert and Daniel Hjorth and Robin Bolt are the reason why I feel the organizational studies/enterpreneurship studies are not boring (the latter two wrote a book using Romanticism literature as a basis of their "seduction and play" model of entrepreneurship!)
On the other hand, it seems the philosophy that is driving design is pretty much random, determined by a few people who stumbled by design and decided to stay. The impression of Tony Fry talking about Heidegger is so deep and dominating. On the other hand anthropologist picked up design as some hope, but does it help them to break from structualism on the theory level? I'm surprised I haven't encountered any design theorist talking seriously about design, Deleuze and process philosophy (I"m sure they touched on Bergson for being "creative", but on process and duration as being? Please suggest if you know).
6 years after I came to design, the question of "what is design" finally morphed into "how do we understand design? what is the philosophy behind?" Some progress I guess..
Hong Kong and ecomodernism design, or The Political Economy of Chinese Contemporary Design
Well... these topics are tricky... but just thinking from the angle of talking about something not universal but local, relevant here and now. There is always the material/embodied aspects of ideology, and these aspects are perfect bridges to talk to "normal people" who are not so acquainted with theory. My eyes are still not so well trained, but that's something to work on!
Entrepreneuring your life
Since I read so much about the unconventional understanding of entrepreneurship, and really think it should be a way of living rather than making money, I think this can be a poststructuralism 101 course. Also trying to think out of the box of faculty of design...
Co-becoming
Co-becoming, co-evolution, correspondance... so many terms, but what are they really about? What are the mechanisms? Where to work on apart from lip service? I'll probably also sneakily blend in some content about embodiment, eco psychology and care...
---
Looking back at these "virtual" titles, they seem to tell something about the inspiration of my thesis. Dreams tell things, even day-dreams can be good material for psychoanalysis :)

Denmark has had its share of innovative jazz bassists, and I count Hugo Rasmussen (March 22, 1941 - 2015) as one of the very best. He has recorded over 900 sessions as a sideman, playing with everybody who came through Copenhagen for 5 decades from the ‘60s onward. He also played with most Danish folk artists, and hardly ever turned down an offer for a gig.
No-one loved playing with him more than tenor sax giant, Ben Webster, who famously punned: “Where Hugo, I go!”
To celebrate #PrideMonth, the OUP Philosophy team honours Michel Foucault (1926-84) as its Philosopher of the Month. Foucault was one of the most influential French philosophers and historians of ideas, best known for his theories on discourses and the relation of power and knowledge. His seminal works, such as History of Madness (1961), Discipline and Punish (1975), and History of Sexuality (1976–84), examine the emergence of the powerful, state institutions (penal, scientific, and medical), and their mechanisms of control. They chart western attitudes towards the insane, criminals, and sexual deviants and consider the ways in which societies have penalized those who are outside the norms.
In History of Sexuality, Foucault famously put forward the view that the homosexual category did not exist until the 19th century. Although same sex relations have been practiced throughout history, people who practised homosexuality were not classified as homosexuals and did not think of themselves in terms of sexuality. He argued that, in fact, there was a proliferation of new medical, juridical, and psychological discourses concerning sex and obsessive discussions about sex, and these led to the construction of sexual identities, designed to regulate rather than suppress sexuality.
An early victim of AIDS, Foucault died in Paris on June 25, 1984 at the age of 57. His theories have had an enormous impact across a range of disciplines from philosophy, literary criticism, anthropology, sociology, gender studies, and queer theory.

Artist Spotlight: Copenhagen’s Underground Music Party Collective KUNE
It was at a meeting with three members of KUNE that I learned about Esperanto, a single global language created by Polish doctor Ludovic Lazarus Zamenhof in 1887. As I sat with DJ Martin Gilleshøj Mikkelsen, DJ Rico Petersen, and visual artist Matei Petrescu, they explained that KUNE means “togetherness” in Esperanto. KUNE is a collective of seven people: the members missing from our interview are DJ Alin Stunned, DJ Anders Søndergaard Dahl, DJ Gunnar Eyþórsso, and visual artist Oana Camelia.
Rico begins by recounting when KUNE first came together. “Martin and I joined later,” he says smiling. “In the beginning, it was just Alin, Anders, and some others bringing turntables, speakers, and lights. They started making parties on Amager. The first underground party we created together was in this weird basement in Sydhavn. Surprisingly, a lot of people showed up to that one. The party turned into beautiful chaos.”
“KUNE has existed since 2014 and I’ve been involved for almost two years. I would say that it has developed like a human being and has gradually become more influential. We don’t have set rules but we learn along the way and grow together,” says Martin.
Matei was attending one of KUNE’s outdoor parties when someone asked him to make a stencilled sign for the bar. He did, and since then he’s been part of the crew, creating cool visuals and art pieces for the events.
“We aren’t solely responsible for KUNE events; there are so many people involved, whether it’s by working at the wardrobe, making artwork, cleaning or standing at the entrance,” Matei says.
The conversation moves to diversity in the Danish electronic music scene. “It’s diverse because underground music is so universal; even though you meet people who might be different from you, we are all united under the love of music. You start to speak the same language in a weird way. We generally don’t think so much about this issue; we are all just people.” says Rico.
He continues, “if you take into account the size of Copenhagen, we have a huge scene with lots of different genres and directions. Danish DJs are getting more global recognition. Sometimes people complain that electronic music is becoming mainstream and that there are too many parties, but I think that it’s one of the things that makes the city stand out.”
Martin agrees. “I’ve heard from people in the industry that now is the best moment for the scene. It has never been this hyped and active. It seems like people are really encouraged to take risks and follow their passions, whether it’s organizing parties, producing, or just being the part of the scene,” he says.
So how do KUNE parties stand out from the others? Rico answers, “From the beginning, it’s always been more than just a party with music. We almost always collaborate with artists who exhibit their work. We often make full room installations.”
“The visuals are all about immersion,” continues Matei. “The artistic mediums can vary from painting to sculpture; it really depends on the space.”
As for their upcoming party featuring Georgian DJ Zurkin, I ask how they found him and what the process of organising this party has been like. The featured visual artist included this time is also Georgian: Daniel Hjorth. Rico takes me through the process: “About a year and a half ago I went to Tbilisi, Georgia, and came across Vodkast records. I spent the day there, then went back the next day where I met Zurkin and Vako, the co-founders of Vodkast Records. They invited me out and we spent the night sharing ideas.”
They went to Georgia again for 4GB Festival, where the Vodkast crew was playing. “Zurkin played a really special set,” Rico says. “He also performed on a Boiler Room showcase at the renown Bassiani club in Tbilisi. That was when we decided that it was the right moment to book him.”
youtube
Martin adds that he and Anders have a community radio show called MMH where Zurkin is invited to record an after party session the day after the gig.
I spoke to Zurkin about the upcoming event, and he’s excited to share his skills with the Copenhagen crowd. “I was impressed by the passion and enthusiasm of Martin and Anders. We had a really interesting musical exchange. I am in contact with the guys almost every day and they are very open-minded about everything. I’ve filtered my playlists so that I can showcase things that are connected to Denmark, and will be playing some tracks that might be both familiar and at the same time unknown to the listeners.”
The KUNE crew has created a thriving artistic platform, uniting all sorts of artists and creatives under the powerful force of music. KUNE parties are an electrifying space where people meet, engage, enjoy art, and get a taste of the underground music scene that pulses through the soul of Copenhagen.

I'm a huge fan of Nordic culture and all things water-related. So of course I loved Daniel Hjorth's portraits the moment I saw them last fall in the winners' gallery for CPOY. Here's a post I wrote about the images today for #natgeoproof
