Dnaganrompa x Twisted Wonderland: The Killing Game

tw: Major spoilers for Danganrompa(1, 2, and 3), major spoilers for Twisted Wonderland(main story/books), mentions of character death(including special characters),suicide, murder, execution, starvation

I've been getting into Danganrompa(again), and was thinking that some of the characters in Danganrompa remind me of a few twst characters. That got me thinking. Who in NRC would survive the killing game? I'll put in a tier list, and then elaborate on my reasoning and thoughts further down. I'm only including students(yes Grim and Ortho count). I'm not going to mention all characters, but there are a few that I'll speak on.

Malleus- Malleus surviving is kind of a no brainer. Nobody would have the nerve to try and kill him, and he's a big softie so he wouldn't kill anybody else either. If provided with a big enough motive, I feel like he would think about it. Some kind of motive where the mastermind threatens to harm his family would be enough to get him to take action. Or something that's putting the Briar Valley in danger. He kinda gives me Kirumi Tojo vibes, and would probably have a similar plan. Find someone who wouldn't mind dying/being killed, kill them, then "graduate" and save their homeland. However, like I said, I don't think he would kill anyone.

Idia- I feel like Idia could survive by simply not socializing. Staying in his room all day just like he was doing before. Obviously reminds me of Chiaki Nanami.

Lilia- Lilia is a really kind person and I have no doubt he would sacrifice himself if it meant helping other people survive.(Ibuki Mioda)

Kalim- Boy stood no chance. I feel like depending on the circumstances between he and Jamil at that moment, his safety would really be hanging by a thread. Post-overblot Jamil probably wouldn't be protecting Kalim, unlike pre-overblot Jamil. Even with Jamil's protection, he would probably still get killed. Perhaps after the events of Jamil's overblot, Kalim might sacrifice himself to Jamil as a form of apology and understanding towards Jamil. He understands why Jamil did what he did, and is apologizing for how he treated him, despite it being unintentional. He wouldn't kill anyone, and even if he wanted to, I doubt he would get away with it.

Grim- Grim would talk so much mess. Bragging about how he's going to survive, but in reality would probably be the first one dead. He might think about killing someone, but probably wouldn't be able to do it. Might finally cave when the starvation motive is put in motion. I don't know why, but he kinda gives me Ryoma Hoshi vibes. I feel like he might have some sort of consensual death(like Ryoma) after the events of book 6/end of book 5, but that seems unlikely.

Sebek- He would probably get killed, but I feel like he might murder someone if they started being too hostile towards Malleus or once the "Killing Among Loved Ones" motive was introduced. Nobody would like him because of his rambling about Malleus and Lilia, and would probably become someone's target relatively quickly. If a murderer caught Sebek alone and was strong enough, it'll be lights out. I'm thinking Leona and Sebek would be rivals even in this situation. Sebek would probably go to Leona's room and try to kill him, but would end up the short end of the stick.

Jade- Korekiyo Shinguji for sure, he's just so insane and I love it. Jade would definitely kill and wouldn't be scared if/when he's found guilty. I don't even think Jade would kill for any reason outside of Floyd or Azul being in danger. Maybe he would kill someone and then play it off like that person wanted to die, and that it was an act of "kindness and compassion". Acting like he just wanted to help the poor unfortunate soul of which was suffering greatly. He would probably die with that creepy smile on his face. Maybe he'd team up with Floyd or Azul.

Azul- He's probably the most insane person in the killing game. I have no doubt that he would be on a killing spree, likely with the assistance of Floyd and Jade. He's definitely Celestia Ludenburg, all the way. The planning, the execution, getting an accomplice, the motive, and of course how they would act once the truth has been revealed. Yeah, I doubt he would be the first to kill, but once the "Ten Million Dollar(madol)" motive is revealed, he's going to mow down so many people to get the prize. There's no way he wouldn't team up with someone, especially Floyd and Jade. Jade's really cunning and meticulous with his actions, which would be perfect for cleaning up blood and hiding evidence. Floyd's super strong, so he's perfect to have around once a corpse needs to be moved or hidden. Azul, while shady, would be the perfect red herring for a killer. Azul could be standing somewhere, with Floyd and Jade hiding somewhere nearby. So once a killer walks up and tries to kill Azul, Floyd can swoop in and squeeze them unconscious, and by then the final act is nearly finished. Someone like Epel might try to kill him so they can escape, but ends up being the one to die instead. Lastly, during the trial, once people start to realize that Azul is responsible for the death(s), he would go full Celeste and start malfunctioning. Just think about Azul right before he overblots, that would be him during the trial. I don't think he would be as accepting of his like Jade though, he would probably break down and cry and beg not to be killed.

Floyd- He would probably just get bored to be honest. I doubt there's a real reason he would kill someone, outside of helping Azul or Jade. He's the type to have a fight to the death just for fun. He would lie during a trial and tamper with a crime scene just to make things more fun and interesting. Kokichi Oma, much? I feel like people might try to kill him for two reasons. One, he's shady as hell. Two, because he's crazy and people think he's the mastermind. They probably wouldn't have the chance to kill him though. Once someone's built up the nerve to kill him, a body will have just been discovered at that very moment.

Sorry this was a long post, I just was kind of in the mood to write a lot. I've been enjoying re-watching Danganrompa, although it is something you need to be in the mood to watch. You can't just have gameplay of it in the background. The trials get pretty intense, and you need to pay attention to them to figure out what's happening. I guess you could Google it afterward, but where's the fun in that. Celeste's trial is what inspired me to make this post, just in case that wasn't clear.

Oh ho ho, no, no he is Not.

All Gonta wants is to be a gentleman right? So then nothing would give him more despair than being the exact opposite! So that’s what he’ll do!

He’ll be rude, and mean, and messy, and basically feral lol. A good amount of the others would think it’s hilarious (bc despair lol) and be down to hang out and work with Gonta, but others like Kirumi or Ryoma would definitely want nothing to do with him.

There’s not too much to say, since tbh it’s a pretty simple direction to take remnant Gonta, but an effective one. It certainly brings him despair, and as more of a brute he’d definitely be good at spreading despair.

I’m sure it must have been Junko to have nudged him in that direction, she’d have been laughing her head off to see such a nice person devolve into such a sloppy beast. But I don’t fully know what any of the specifics would be at this point.

I think he’d probably hang out with Kokichi a lot lol, thanks to the despair he’d totally be down with whatever schemes Kokichi can come up with. Probably a lot of the Kaito prank war involves Gonta lol. Plus those two has such a strange (and toxic) psudo friendship that I think would bleed into their relationship as remnants.

As far as design goes, he’s still in the tattered remains of his old suit, but it’s barely hanging on by a thread. His personal hygiene is of course non existent, so I yellowed his teeth and nails a little, and his hair is very wild and unkempt. He’s still got all his bug friends though! They’re thriving in his filthier atmosphere.

Sorry this one’s so much shorter than the others! I had such a clear idea but when I sat down to write this just nothing was coming out sadly.

I've only watched a let's play of half the first Danganrompa game but I love googling new characters from the franchise. Gonta Gokuhara is actually the Ultimate Sweetheart and I love him so much. And then reading Korekiyo's page I was like 'oh neat... uh-huh... cool... OH OKAY OHHH OKAY' and anyways I loved that. Bates vibes are best vibes. But with more elegance and panache?? Go off!!

Amphibia — I love this show SO much! The dynamics between Sasha, Anne and Marcy are immaculate and play off of the frogs, toads and newts so well; you have to watch this show if you haven’t yet. This goes for the whole list BTW. ^^

Owl House — I love this show, but I feel less of a connection than Amphibia because I watched Amphibia first ;-; THE BEST thing about this show is the characters. Amity, Raine, Hunter, Luz and Gus are the best characters IMO.

Danganrompa Another — SORA AND YOUROKO IS MY COMFORT SHIP. Respect to Weeby Newz (YT) for getting me into this amazing fangan. So much better than the Source material. I recommend this fan-game for everyone but HUGE TW for the first game and a even bigger one for the sequel. We all meme on Mitch here. (Anyone glorifying Mitch Higa without being ironic DNI)

Danganrompa Edens Garden — OOH THE PROLOGUE LOOKED SO GOOD. If you’re looking for a alternative from the problematic air around the Main Danganrompa games, look no further than this game. ME AND JETT DAWSON ARE LITERALLY DATING. but … if I can’t have him cause he’s not real … he can date Mark. BUT I WONT BE HAPPY ABOUT IT. /j (I’m also a MarkDawson shipper so <: )

Inanimate Insanity — POSSIBLY MY OLDEST AND FIRST HYPER-FIXATION?? Bright lights forever! Anyway,,, Plot and Pacing: 2nd Season. Quality: 3rd Season. Sorry not sorry, the First season is problematic and unfunny. Anyway Cabby can marry me. (/hj) This animated YouTube series is so good!

Danganrompa anime review

Spoilers for danganrompa (INCLUDING the despair+future arcs) and tw for mass killing games, gore, violence, and holding people captive

“The act of searching for hope, to try and find it- that by itself is the true meaning of hope,”- Kyoko Kirigiri

Genre: trigger happy, psychological, splatter, murder mystery, high school

Where to watch: Funimation

Characterization: 8/10 (characters are generally pretty well developed in trigger happy havoc, with a lot of them being colourful and having distinct personalities. The amount of time you get to know individuals and therefore the depth of their personality decreases in the despair arc, but they are still fun and distinct)

Setting: 8/10 (the idea of holding such a barbaric game in a high school for gifted students is sick and twisted, which goes well with the general theme of the anime, but the dystopic world the anime is set in is poorly developed throughout both arcs)

Art style: 7.5/10 (I'm not too fond of the computerized vibe of the setting and the execution scenes, but the anime is saved by the creative and appealing way that characters are drawn, as well as the use of appropriate colour pallets for characters and the atmosphere throughout both arcs)

Comfort: 3/10 (this anime has no issue with disposing of half the cast in ways that can be very gory. That, along with the sense of being trapped in the game with no tangible way out and the whole thing being a tool of some sort of far away mastermind, make this a thrilling and engaging watch, but by no means a light one)

Addictiveness: 9/10 (the constant mystery and investigations, the tense class trials after murders, and the never ending plot twists, as well as the bigger questions of what the game actually is and why someone would do that, means viewers feel obliged to keep watching to seek answers)

Philosophy: 5/10 (apart from a few scenes illustrating the complex dynamic between the people in the groups, who grew close but had all the reason to suspect each other, and the ideas surrounding hope, despair and the balance we need for a "good" world, the anime is substantially lacking.)

Originality: 9/10 (the idea of the mass killing game between these trapped, and highly gifted, high school students is a completely original concept, and there are also several plot twists which make the anime a box of surprises)

Plot: 4/10 (the plot seems solid at first but once it starts to develop, and especially towards the end of trigger happy havoc, it begins to feel overdone, with the plot twists becoming needlessly complex, and weak, with an unsatisfactory ending to trigger happy havoc after an unsatisfactory explanation of the mastermind's motives. Overuse of mystery and gore keep the viewers hooked. The plot stayed solid and stronger throughout parts of the despair and future arcs, but even there it regularly felt lacking and dragged on.)

Consistency: 6.5/10 (trigger happy havoc is definitely the more engaging of the two, but both experience a decline in quality as they go on. The despair and future arcs were both quite boring plot wise and felt forced and dragged out)

The plot(s):

Trigger happy havoc

A group of unsuspecting, yet highly gifted, high school students wake up to find themselves unconscious and trapped in hope's peak academy, where they were due to go to develop their talents. Among them is Makoto Naegi, the picture of ordinary, who just got in due to a lottery. The students are told to gather in the hall where they meet Monokuma the slightly unsettling teddy bear principal, who tells them they are trapped at the school for life unless they kill a classmate without being discovered. Initially, everyone is completely opposed to the idea- they all agree to follow a set of rules and work together to try to escape. However, the day after Monokuma shows them horrifying and very personal videos, the first person is found dead. Once that line has been crossed, everything spirals down, with dead bodies, investigations and people risking their lives to survive as they work together to try and discover who the mastermind behind Monokuma is and why they are trapped and being forced to kill each other.

Despair + future arcs

One of these deals with what happened prior to trigger happy havoc, and what hope's peak and its students were like before despair hit. It focuses on a lively class and an equally bright homeroom teacher, who grow close after uniting under the class president, the shy yet kindhearted Chiaki Nanami. After school one day, Nanami meets a boy from the reserve course (ordinary students who pay high fees to study at hope's peak) who is the definition of ordinary. The two play video games together and become friends, but he's increasingly worried about his lack of talent, and what that means, especially in terms of his relationship with Nanami, so he does something risky and reckless, which completely changes him and greatly facilitates the lingering mastermind's plan to turn the school, and later the entire world, into a breeding ground for despair.

One of these focuses on the future of the survivors from trigger happy havoc, who are fighting to restore hope in a shambolic, despair ridden world. During a meeting, they find themselves trapped in the building and receive a message from Monokuma- all those present will participate in a second mass killing game, which will involve everyone getting knocked out and the attacker being woken up, giving them 5 minutes and a chance to make a move. As people start dying each round and the situation grows incredibly sinister, information is brought to life about the truth of the game from the deceased detective's notes. Information that might just be able to help to put a stop to the game.
