At a bar in Euljiro, one of Seoul’s up-and-coming hip neighborhoods, two voices intertwined in a duet. One was high-pitched, the other an octave lower.
But there was only one singer, a 27-year-old named jiGook. The other voice was a recording made years ago, before he began his transition and hormone therapy deepened his voice.
“I don’t want to forget about my old self,” he told the 50 or so people at the performance, a fund-raiser for a group that supports young L.G.B.T.Q. Koreans. “I love myself before I started hormone therapy, and I love myself as who I am now.”
Like many other South Korean singers, jiGook, who considers himself gender fluid, transmale and nonbinary, wants to be a K-pop star. So do Prin and SEN, his bandmates in QI.X, a fledgling group that has released two singles.
What makes them unusual is that they are proudly out — in their music, their relationship with their fans and their social activism. They call themselves one of the first openly queer, transgender K-pop acts, and their mission has as much to do with changing South Korea’s still-conservative society as with making music.
In the group’s name — pronounced by spelling out the letters — Q stands for queer, I for idol and X for limitless possibilities. Park Ji-yeon, the K-pop producer who started QI.X, says it is “tearing down the heteronormative walls of society.”
Very few K-pop artists, or South Korean entertainers in general, have ever been open about being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer. Though the country has become somewhat more accepting of sexual diversity, homophobia is still prevalent, and there are no legal protections against discrimination.
For entertainers, coming out is seen as a potential career killer, said Cha Woo-jin, a music critic in Seoul. That applies even to K-pop, despite its young, increasingly international fan base and its occasional flirtation with androgyny and same-sex attraction.
“K-pop fans seem to accept the queer community and imagery so long as their favorite stars don’t come out explicitly,” Mr. Cha said.
That’s not a compromise that QI.X is willing to make.
The bandmates’ social media accounts, which promote their causes along with their music, are up front about who they are. So are their singles, “Lights Up” (“The hidden colors in you / I see all the colors in you”) and “Walk & Shine,” which Mx. Park says “celebrates the lives and joy of minorities.”
“Someday, we want to be on everyone’s streaming playlist,” said Prin, 22.
As a producer, Mx. Park, 37, who identifies as queer and nonbinary, has worked on hits for well-known K-pop acts like GOT7 and Monsta X. But she wanted to make music that spoke directly to people like her, with “an artist who could encapsulate our lives, love, friendships and farewells.”
She met some of the QI.X members through a K-pop music class she started in 2019, designed with queer performers in mind. (In other classes, she said, “It was assumed that female participants only wanted to learn girl-group songs and male participants only boy-group songs.”)
SEN, 23, said that when Mx. Park asked her to join QI.X, “it was as if a genie in a bottle had come to me.”
SEN had been a dancer and a choreographer for several K-pop management agencies, including BTS’s agency, Big Hit Entertainment, now known as HYBE. The people she worked with knew she was queer, and they were welcoming.
But whenever she auditioned to join an idol group, she said, she “never fit the bill for what they wanted.” People would say she was too short or boyish, or comment about her cropped hair.
That’s not an issue for QI.X, which doesn’t aspire to the immaculately styled look of the typical K-pop act (and, in any case, couldn’t afford the ensemble of stylists those groups have). Individuality, they say, is part of the point.
QI.X often performs at fund-raisers, for L.G.B.T.Q. and other causes, and sees its music as inseparable from its activism. Maek, for instance, an original member who sang on both singles but is on hiatus from the group, works for the Seoul Disabled People’s Rights Film Festival and volunteers for a transgender rights organization.
With no support from a management agency, Mx. Park and the group do everything themselves. They handle their own bookings and manage their social media presence, recording videos themselves to post on TikTok and Instagram.
Many of the videos are shot at LesVos, an L.G.B.T.Q. bar in Seoul that often serves as QI.X’s studio and rehearsal hall. Myoung-woo YoonKim, 68, who has run LesVos since the late 1990s, grew up at a time when lesbians were practically invisible in South Korea. “I would often think, ‘Am I the only woman who loves women?’” they said.
The QI.X members adore Mx. YoonKim, whom they call hyung, a Korean word for older brother. During a recent video session at LesVos, after dozens of increasingly comical lip-syncing takes of “Walk & Shine,” Mx. YoonKim started to join in. Before long, everyone was bent over with laughter.
To a casual observer of K-pop, it might seem surprising that so few of its artists are out. As Mr. Cha, the music critic, notes, L.G.B.T.Q. imagery has been known to surface in K-pop videos and in ads featuring its stars.
Some critics see this phenomenon as “queerbaiting,” a cynical attempt to attract nonconformist fans — or to deploy gender-bending imagery because it’s seen as trendy — without actually identifying with them. To Mr. Cha, it suggests that K-pop has a substantial queer fan base, and that some artists might simply be expressing their identities to the extent they can.
Mr. Cha thinks the taboo against entertainers’ coming out reflects a general attitude toward pop culture in South Korea: “We pay for you, therefore don’t make us uncomfortable.” (Similar attitudes seem to prevail in Japan, where one pop idol recently made news by telling fans he was gay.)
QI.X’s fans, who call themselves QTZ (a play on “cuties”), love the group for charging over that boundary. Many are overseas and follow the group online, leaving enthusiastic messages. “I’m so happy I can finally have an artist in the K-pop industry that I can relate to on a gender level, on a queer level,” one said in a video message to the group. “I’m so excited for you!”
The band also gets hateful messages, which its members do their best to ignore. Prin, 22, is optimistic that attitudes in South Korea are changing. (Joining QI.X was Prin’s way of coming out as gender queer, but friends were much more surprised by the news that Prin was in an idol group.)
The biggest show of QI.X’s career, so far, was in July at a Pride event, the Seoul Queer Culture Festival. In recent years, it had been held at Seoul Plaza, a major public square. But this year, the city denied organizers permission to hold it there, letting a Christian group use the space for a youth concert instead.
Activists saw that as discrimination, though the city denied it. Conservative Christians are a powerful force in South Korean politics, having lobbied successfully for years to block a bill that would prevent discrimination against gay, lesbian and transgender people. Organizers held the festival in Euljiro.
For its set, QI.X had about 20 backup performers, some of whom were their friends (Mx. YoonKim was one of them). They had rehearsed only once together, on the festival stage that morning, because they hadn’t had the money to rent a big studio.
Christian protesters were picketing the festival, some with signs that read “Homosexuality not human rights but SIN.” But fans were there, too. As QI.X sang “Lights Up” and “Walk & Shine,” hundreds crowded in front of the stage, many wearing headbands that were purple, the group’s color. There were Pride flags, and signs that read “We only see you QI.X.”
Hours later, the excitement still hadn’t faded for QI.X. “I felt alive for the first time in a while,” SEN said.

summary | jieun gets some helpful advice on her last day as a jyp trainee
circa | september 2015
contains | 1.6k words, talks about self-doubt
note | when one door closes :)
Tumblr media
Jieun felt like a failure.
And in a way, she was.
It’s been two years since she first stepped into the JYP Entertainment building with the dream of becoming a singer, and just two months prior, that dream was dangled right in front of her face before being snatched away. She’d come so close, but with each step she took towards the exit of the building, she could feel her hopes of becoming an idol slip further and further out of reach.
Perhaps it was wrong for her to get her hopes up. Jieun had known since the beginning of Sixteen that she was lacking in many aspects, but she thought that if she worked hard and put in the effort, she could hide these flaws and earn her spot in the debut group.
For a while, it seemed to work. She could feel the support of the audience every time she walked on stage and knew that they were rooting for her. She wasn’t the best dancer, possibly even the worst on the show, but the audience supported her regardless because they thought she had more to bring. And maybe she did, but none of that mattered because at the end of the day, Jieun was the one sitting alone on a bench outside the JYPE building, no longer a contestant of Sixteen, or even a trainee anymore.
She stared down at the concrete, gaze tracing over every little crack and crevice as she listened to the sound of passing cars in the distance. The passing cars, the floating conversations of civilians, the buzz of the nearby streetlamp, it all distracted her from the loudest noise of all: the voice in her head that continuously repeated one sentence.
You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You fail-
Jieun snapped her head up at the sound of a throat being cleared, her eyes widening when her gaze met none other than GOT7 Jinyoung’s. The man gave her a soft smile as he motioned to the bench.
“Mind if I take a seat?” Hesitantly, she nodded, sliding over to give him more room. “You’re Jieun, right?”
Taken aback, Jieun gave a small nod. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise that he knew her name, considering they’d both been trainees when she’d first joined, but that time period had been brief as the GOT7 lineup was finalized only months later. The two had also never interacted before that moment, which only added to her shock.
As though reading her mind, Jinyoung gave a small chuckle.
“I remember when you were a new trainee,” he said. “Nayeon wouldn’t let any of us say hi to you because she was worried we were going to scare you.” Jieun’s eyebrows raised in surprise.
“Really?”
Jinyoung nodded. “I mean, it was probably for the best at the time.” He looks off into the distance, shaking his head in amusement. “I think that if we had, you would’ve left the company then and there.” The comment made Jieun giggle as she looked down, reminiscing on her first few months at the company.
Those first few months at JYPE were awful. She’d felt lost, trapped in a constant state of questioning if she was making the right choice by pursuing an idol career. However, as she became closer with the other trainees, those feelings dissipated and were replaced with anticipation about standing on stage and performing for an audience. All she could do was wait patiently for the day her debut would be announced.
The smile slowly faded from Jieun’s face as those same feelings came rushing back. The doubt, the wondering if she was good enough to be an idol; it all flooded her senses without warning.
“Jieun?” She blinked, Jinyoung’s voice bringing her back to reality. Jieun looked up, her eyes meeting his concerned gaze before her eyes dropped back to the ground.
They sat in silence for a few seconds as Jinyoung thought of what to say. After a brief pause, he spoke up.
“Some of my members watched Sixteen, including me,” he began, voice soft. “You really tried your best and improved a lot throughout the show. I’m sorry that you didn’t get the result you wanted.”
Jieun took in a deep breath before drawing out a long sigh.
“It’s ok, you don’t need to say sorry,” she replied with a simple shrug. “There were just too many things that I was lacking in, so it makes sense that I wasn’t chosen for debut. I wasn’t good enough.”
A frown made its way onto Jinyoung’s face. His gaze lingered on the girl for a few seconds, an inaudible sigh leaving his lips as he tried to think of what to say.
“Jieun, I understand your disappointment,” he said. A bit surprised at his words, she glanced over, though kept her eyes low. “You worked so hard and got your hopes up, but now it just stings because you feel like you wasted your time.”
Jieun slowly raised her gaze, making eye contact with the man. Surprise shone in her eyes as she gave a hesitant nod. Jinyoung nodded back.
“When I was watching Sixteen and saw you performing, all I could think about was “wow, Jieun has grown so much”, and I felt proud seeing how much you’ve improved since I last saw you.” He smiled at her before going on. “Anyways, the point I’m trying to make is that, even though you didn’t get the result you wanted, your hard work wasn’t completely wasted. You still want to be an idol, right?”
Jieun opened her mouth to reply, but found herself unable to answer. Did she want to be an idol? There were so many other talented trainees that had the same dream as her, people who put in a lot more time and effort than she ever had. Who was she to try and take away the opportunity to debut from others when she herself was lacking in so many aspects? Even if she worked harder than ever and improved herself, there was no guarantee that she would ever actually debut.
Before she could say anything, Jinyoung spoke up again.
“Honestly, this career is really difficult,” he said, looking out into the distance. “Schedules are exhausting, living under a microscope and dealing with hate can be draining. Even trainee life- the constant anxiety about when, or if you’ll debut, and feeling like you’re not good enough. It’s a hard thing to deal with.”
Jieun stared at him with wide eyes, though stayed quiet as he went on.
“But the feeling of being on stage when adrenaline is running through your veins, knowing there’s so many people that support you- it’s surreal, and for me, it makes all the hard parts worth it.” Jinyoung looked over, meeting her gaze with a sympathetic smile. “But that’s all my opinion, and you might be completely different. There’s nothing wrong if you realize that you don’t want to pursue the idol life, but you should make that decision for yourself.”
She could do nothing but stare at him. He was right in every aspect; she could either continue through the hardships to do something she loved, or she could turn back now and leave this dream behind. Jieun remembered being on stage, the warm rush of adrenaline coursing through her veins and the roar of the audience. It was truly an unforgettable feeling. Could she really give that up?
Jieun turned to Jinyoung, their eyes meeting. Slowly, a determined look made its way across her face.
“I want to keep doing this,” she admitted. “This is my dream. I want to do this.”
A wide smile spread across Jinyoung’s face as he nodded at the girl. Before he could reply, a honk in the distance caused them both to look over. Jieun squinted as a white car came to a stop along the curb.
“Oh, I think that’s my brother,” she said, sheepishly glancing over at him.
“Well then, Jieun,” he said as he brought himself to his feet. Jieun followed suit.  “I believe in you, and I’m looking forward to your debut.” Jinyoung extended his closed fist toward her. She looked down at it, then up at him, and smiled as they fist-bumped.
“Thank you.”
Jinyoung simply nodded, gesturing towards her brother’s car. Jieun grabbed her bags, letting out a big sigh as she started walking. After a few steps, she stopped, turning her body back to him. She leaned over and bowed 90 degrees. When she stood up straight again, Jieun gave one last smile.
“I’ll be on stage one day, I promise.”
He smiled at the girl and nodded once before Jieun turned back and began jogging towards the car. She opened the passenger’s side door and hopped in.
“Hey, who’s that?” Jihoon asked as she closed the car door. Jieun glanced over, watching as Jinyoung walked back into the JYPE building.
“GOT7’s Jinyoung,” she replied bluntly. “He gave me some advice.”
“Wanna talk about it?” Jihoon asked as he started the car.
She shook her head. “Maybe later.”
Jieun watched as they started moving, the JYPE building slowly getting further and further out of view before it was too far back for her to see. A quiet sigh escaped her lips as she turned to face forward again. The further they got, the more it felt like Jieun was walking away from her dream. She didn’t know what she was going to do from that point onward, but her promise to Jinyoung rang throughout her head.
Jieun dreamed of standing on stage again, and although she wasn’t sure how long it would take, she knew that with every day that passed, she was one step closer to achieving her dream. She just had to remember to not give up before it happened.

nari's love life !
Tumblr media
nari started dating after they debuted. It was obviously against the company rules, but what were they gonna do about it? kick her out? she's pansexual and so far, has only dated people with the same life as her (idols), because they can understand each other's schedules and make it work better than with someone who's not a part of this life. right now, she's currently in a relationship with a male idol.
Tumblr media
2015–2016 › seulgi, red velvet
Tumblr media
— their friendship started when nari ended up confessing her undying love for red velvet's main dancer on a live.
— may I add... while she was completely wasted.
— she was saying how much she loved watching the older woman dance and how much talented she was.
— then, seulgi approached her on a music show the next day.
— didn't really date, but they were tied to one another, if you get what i mean.
— a sort of fwb kind of relationship.
— then nari confessed.
— and they decided to not keep on with this relationship.
— and then, nari was left heartbroken, but at least they are still friends.
— they joke about it from time to time.
2016–2017 › jayb, got7
Tumblr media
— they were friends way before they started dating.
— nari met him because of her friendship with got7's maknae line and ended up befriending him due to bambam introducing them.
— started dating because jaebeom showed her a song he wrote for her, confessing the feelings he had.
— it also became a part of one of got7's albums.
— dated for almost 9 months then they broke up.
— she had a really good time with him and can't really complain, same as him.
— he wrote various songs for her just as she has written lots of songs about him.
— remain as friends and they support each other til this day.
2017 › wheein, mamamoo
Tumblr media
— after her break up with jaebeom, she wanted to date women again.
— didn't go so well.
— her and wheein were friends for a long time before they dated.
— but they couldn't really understand each other and talk while they were together.
— the relationship ended after three months.
— and their friendship too.
— both parties don't really speak to each other anymore.
— it's awkward at gatherings when they are both there.
— nari tries to avoid wheein at all costs.
2018–2020 › baekhyun, exo
Tumblr media
— got close because of a collaboration they did together.
— started dating after a couple months of knowing each other.
— their relationship consisted of spending quality time with each other.
— her first ever long-term relationship and her first public relationship.
— they dated for 2 and a half months until they broke up.
— happened during the pandemic, they slowly distanced themselves.
— especially due to their different life rhythms at the time.
— then nari broke up with him after a fight they had.
— he was devastated and literally tried to gain her back at all costs.
— going as far as posting some cryptic stuff on his social media.
— hinting that he missed someone so much that he thought his heart was going to stop beating.
— and then deleting right after.
— he still loves her, but she moved on.
— and for good.
obs.: some speculate that the album bambi has something to do with nari.
2021–present › seungcheol, seventeen
Tumblr media
— okay, how to start?
— they've been friends since forever, basically.
— cheol has had the biggest crush on her ever since they met, but he didn't do anything due to their teamwork.
— he supported her through her every relationship, and she's forever grateful for that.
— nari takes great care of him. she just wants what's best for this boy!
— they started dating after a drunk confession on cheol's side.
— she was a bit hesitant at the start, but she knew that what they had was way more than just a friendship.
— then, after overthinking she just said fuck it and kissed him.
— all the members LOVE to tease coups for it.
— they NEVER will tease nari because of their relationship.
— just their big and scary leader who turns into the biggest softie whenever he sees her face.
— they've thought about going public but decided on letting people find out by themselves.
— which is slowly working since they don't really hide much.
— they've been together for a long time now and expect them to be like this forever!

she has a twin brother (jisoo/jacob)
she started ballet when she was four and continued it into middle school before she made the switch to contemporary dance
growing up her mom was a very big fan of snsd and 2pm which introduced her to kpop at an early age
she was absolutely obsessed with hyoyeon
☆ pre-debut/trainee period
her mother had heard about the JYP audition in their area and had suggested jieun try out as just a fun experience for her. they ended up being interested in her.
for her sing portion she sang '4 pink walls' by alessia cara and she danced got7's 'just right'
being an idol had never really been something she had though about until she had auditioned and realized she had the potential to actually pass
her mother was 100% on board with the idea from the start but her father took a bit of coaxing
she officially joined jyp in the summer of 2016
her family had stayed in korea with her that summer before they moved back in the fall, leaving jieun in the care of her aunt while she was there
though she had auditioned as a dancer during her time training she discovered she had a true propensity for singing as well
chan had noticed jieun and was impressed by her singing, but had no thought of her joining this hypothetical group he was looking at until he saw her dancing with jeongin one night
she had taught herself one of the boy trainee's dance pieces so she could help jeongin clarify some of the moves and chan was not only thoroughly impressed with how easily she had taught herself but also how well she executed it.
at the time she was also heavily being considered for jyp's girl group set to debut the following year but with a bit of convincing from chan and jeongin she became the 4th stray kids shortly after jeongin

Grace's Relationships outside of BTS (Male)
Tumblr media
GOT7
While not close to individual members, Grace adores and loves GOT7 as a whole. She loves the relationship between Jackson and RM, as well as BamBam & Yugyeom with Jungkook.
The boys in return are very protective of Grace and would step in if the rest of BTS weren't there, especially at award shows if Grace was on her own for whatever reason - one of the GOT7 boys would be there at her side or behind her
Depending on solo projects or group projects, she often sends her support by sending food or coffee trucks
Tumblr media
SEVENTEEN
Grace is one of their biggest fans and she can see the similarities between BTS and Seventeen. From small companies, self-produced, climbing the ranks without much support.
Often has their songs on her playlist on repeat. Lately, it's been Super because she's obsessed with the song
Got dragged into doing the Super dance challenge with S.Coups, Woozi and Hoshi
She has admitted if she was younger than Jungkook, her bias probably would be Mingyu
Has become somewhat a second mother to them as well
They often do dance challenges to her songs as well
Tumblr media
STRAY KIDS
While you won't find many interactions between the group as a whole and Grace, you will find interactions between Lee Know and Bangchan with Grace.
Lee Know was obviously one of BTS back up dancers and Grace remembers him from that time, so she often makes a beeline to see him at award shows to say hello.
Bangchan because of his friendship with Jungkook - he's another one of her sons. She knows how dedicated and hardworking he is as a leader and as one of the producers.
She's also gone on record to say she loves Seungmin's vocals and Han's rapping and singing abilities - that it's rare to find someone who has that talent.
She has appeared at their tour to watch them and is often caught on camera singing along
Calls them the baby group of K-Pop
OTHERS
Became good friends with MAX & LAUV via them writing songs with or for BTS. She has also doing background vocals for them and has helped on some of their songs
Same goes for ED SHEERAN - she has done the same for him. It's more a business relationship than it is a friendship
Grace adores STEVE AOKI and often interacts with him on Twitter, trying to attend some of his concerts if she can.
Same for BRUNO MARS and ANDERSON .PAAK - loves all their music and she often speaks to Anderson .Paak's wife as she is Korean. He often asks her for translations of some lyrics
