The Libertines return with ‘Run Run Run’ and announce new album ‘All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade’
“We're over the moon, and the ball is in the back of the net," declares Pete Doherty, as the band also announce intimate Margate shows
ByAndrew Trendell
The Libertines have returned with new single ‘Run Run Run’, as well as announcing details of their long-awaited fourth album ‘All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade’ and some intimate Margate shows.
READ MORE: The Albion Rooms: Watch Carl Barat show us around The Libertines’ hotel and studio
Arriving on March 8, ‘All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade’ is the long-mooted follow-up to 2015’s ‘Anthems For Doomed Youth’, with the first taster arriving in the form of launch single ‘Run Run Run’ – a classic yet subtly raucous Libs indie dancefloor anthem that sees them reflect on their standing after more than two decades, as Carl Barat begins: “It’s the lifelong project of a life on the lash”.
“It’s about being trapped, and trying to escape your dismal life, a bit like the man in Bukowski’s Post Office,” said Barat of the track. “The worst thing for The Libertines would be to get stuck in a ‘Run-run-run’ rut – constantly trying to relive our past.”
youtube
As well as sharing a name with Erich Maria Remarque’s anti-war novel, the album’s title is in honour of the band’s Margate hotel, studio, restaurant and bar, The Albion Rooms – which is also depicted on the sleeve with a dramatic cast of characters from the world of faded seaside glamour.
Consisting of 11 new tracks with songwriting credits shared among all four of the band, ‘All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade’ was produced by Dimitri Tikovoï (The Horrors/Charli XCX/Becky Hill) and recorded at The Albion Rooms in just four weeks back in February and March of 2023, before being finished over a wee at La Ferme de Gestein Studios in Normandy. Additional production and mixing comes from Dan Grech-Marguerat (Lana Del Rey/Liam Gallagher/Paul McCartney).
Despite having been attempting work on writing the album for some years, the indie veterans have said that their previously reported sessions at Geejam in Port Antonio, Jamaica
saw Barat and Pete Doherty’s chemistry reform, before returning to Margate to reconvene with bassist John Hassall and drummer Gary Powell where, as Doherty explained, “we really came together as a band for “a moment of rare peace and unity, with all the members contributing.”
Doherty continued: “We’re over the moon, the ball is in the back of the net, and I’m chuffed for the lads!”
“I feel like we’ve completed a cycle of some kind as a band, and finally now we can add these songs to the setlist, because we’ve got some bangers in there. Now we’ve opened the hotel and used the studio ourselves and it’s all worked out – more Libertines records? I should hope so!”
Barat, meanwhile, added: “Our first record was born out of panic, and disbelief that we were actually allowed to be in a studio; the second was born of total strife and misery; the third was born of complexity; this one feels like we were all actually in the same place, at the same speed, and we really connected.”
The Libertines’ new album ‘All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade’ is available on CD, deluxe CD, 12” vinyl in limited edition coloured variants, deluxe double vinyl cassette and digital download on March 8.
Fans who pre-order the album will be offered the chance to purchase tickets for ‘All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade – described as “two days of special acoustic and electric live shows by The Libertines” at the 500-capacity Lido in Margate on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 December. VIP after party tickets at the Albion Rooms and Justine’s nightclub, including full band DJ sets, will also be available.
The tracklist to ‘All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade’ is:
‘Run, Run, Run’ ‘Mustang’ ‘Have A Friend’ ‘Merry Old England’ ‘Man With The Melody’ ‘Oh Shit’ ‘Night Of The Hunter’ ‘Baron’s Claw’ ‘Shiver’ ‘Be Young’ ‘Songs They Never Play On The Radio’
youtube
Speaking to NME back in 2019, Doherty said that the band had been exploring a number of ambitious directions on new material, likening it to the diversity of The Clash‘s divisive ‘Sandinista’.
Drummer Gary Powell then told NME in August last year that the band were “not going to try and reinvent the wheel… but I think we can push the boat out a little more while still bringing something that has the same emotional integrity and dynamism that the audience craves when they come to a Libertines show.”

Icarus Falls is the second solo studio album. It was released on 14 December 2018, as a double album by RCA Records. Originally planned for 2017, the album was delayed so that ZAYN could focus on the aesthetic and sound the album would adopt, marking a shift from the visual identity used on his debut studio album, Mind of Mine (2016). Icarus Falls is a concept album influenced by Greek Mythology and Icarus, addressing themes such as self-love, finding yourself again as a person, and hope.
Influenced by the double album structure, ZAYN incorporated several sonic elements in addition to R&B, such as pop, funk rock, trap and electropop. He recruited Alan Sampson, MakeYouKnowLove and Malay, who had already worked with Zayn on his previous album, adding Brian Lee, Dan Grech, Timbaland and the duo Saltwives to the production team.
Six international singles —"Let Me", "Entertainer, "Sour Diesel", "Too Much" featuring Timbaland, "Fingers", and "No Candle No Light" featuring Nicki Minaj—supported the album; the first peaked at seventy-three on the Billboard Hot 100. "Rainberry" and "Good Years" preceded the album as promotional tracks.
Icarus Falls is a concept album inspired by the Greek myth of Icarus. He recalls the story of Icarus, who was told by his father to not fly too high but not too low with his pair of wings, rather to follow his path of flight. Overcome with thrill because he could now fly, Icarus flew too close to the sun, where the beeswax binding his wings together melted, thus destroying his set of wings. ZAYN compares the legend to the ups and downs of his relationship.

The original version for Lucky Day before the Polydor Records asked Nicola to re-record it with a more mainstream sound.
About the song, Nicola says:
"Writing Lucky Day with Martina was so much fun! Channeling sassy and retro made for a cute moment coming up with the ‘Mwah Mwah Mwah Mwah’ and ‘Boom Boom Baby’. I’ve always loved this original demo but we felt the direction was to different as the second single to follow ‘Beat Of My Drum’ so we straightened out the production on it a little. We tried to make it more radio friendly and they didn’t play it anyway! The motto here is, create what you want not what you think people will like. The right people will find it. Grateful for how much time Dragonette dedicated to me that year while making the album. <3"

THE HONEY POP - IF THE POETS ARE GONNA JUMP WE’RE JUMPING TOO
Only The Poets, aún puedan asistir.

Malta are one of the many countries selecting their Eurovision act this Saturday! I listened to all the snippets when they were first released, then decided I’d wait until after all the live shows were done and the semi-finalists were announced before ranking them – 40 songs is a lot to go through after all!
The Busker – Dance (Our Own Party)
Cheryl – La La Land
Giada – I Depend on You
Nathan – Creeping Walls
Greta Tude – Sound of My Stilettos
Christian Arding – Eku Ċar
Brooke – Checkmate
Eliana Gomez Blanco – Guess What
Maxine Pace – Alone
Geo Debono – The Mirror
Bradley Debono – Blackout
Andre' – Broken Hill
Fabrizio Faniello – Try To Be Better
Ryan Hili – In the Silence
Mikhail – Leħen Fiċ-Ċpar
Dario Bezzina – Bridle Road
Dan – It’ll Be OK
Ian – On My Own
Matt Blxck – UP.
Mark Anthony Bartolo – Tears
Stefan – Heartbreaker
Dominic and Anna – Whatever Wind May Blow
Klinsmann – Piranha
Chris Grech – Indescribable
Even cut down from the original 40 songs, this was still a slog to get though. A lot of the songs frustrated me or were just dull which didn’t put me in a great mood for listening to whatever came next. However, there were a couple of bright points here and there.
My standout was Dance (Our Own Party), which is easily the catchiest and most distinct sounding song here. That beat is so funky and the sax line is great. I like the delivery and performance from the lead singer, it’s cool but also has a slightly awkward, relatable quality to it. This is definitely the entry I had the most fun with!
I also really liked Cheryl’s La La Land, which, being a rock song, was always going to catch my attention. The verses build the energy well, and although I don’t think the chorus quite delivers the intensity I was hoping for, it’s still good. It might not be the most hard-hitting rock track, but Cheryl is a good vocalist and confident performer, and I had a good time with this one.
Giada really impressed me with her vocals, I Depend On You is a pretty average song, but she really elevated it with her performance. If Malta wants to play their game of selecting an artist then giving them a completely new song, she’d be a great option! On the opposite end of things, I enjoyed Creeping Walls with its dark pop sound, but felt Nathan’s performance could have been a little stronger. It’s got a lot of potential though!
I’d love to see all four of these songs in the final, but I’ll be rooting for The Busker to win the whole thing! I reckon Malta will struggle to qualify again this year no matter what they pick, but they’re the act I think have the best chance. It’s hard to predict what any of these songs might look like with proper staging, but since they were already entertaining just by themselves I’m optimistic they could put on a good show at Eurovision, hopefully with this song!
#eurovision#esc2023#nf ranking#malta#I'm not going to rank the final separately#not when there's Sanremo happening!#I did watch all 40 live performances and oh boy#I don't think we missed anything too much#there were a couple of songs I thought were much better than some stuff that qualified for the semi#but nothing that would crack my top 5 here#also did not mean to put this out so late#but it took me longer than I expected to finish#and I wanted to make sure I posted it before the semi final tomorrow!

You have to admire the guys from Keane, because they didn't give up after struggling to reach their early triumphs. Thus, they found themselves in Strangeland, since they cannot be seen as the oldies at the point of that record, though they don't feel current either. They somehow became a reliable group, yet you can still notice the traces of a more adventurous collective. Moreover, the disc also transforms them from trio to quartet thanks to Jesse Quinn who used to work with them before. While the latter addition does contribute to the rejuvenated sound of the platter, there are still some ways, where they could go. I still think they remain too cautious, they should let themselves go off the rails to shock us, you know they're capable of this.

There’s a lot of interesting, dance-y elements that they brought into that record with [famed producer] Stuart Price and it just showed me that you can bring in these trendier sounds, but do them in a really authentic way.”
