Listed: Nick Jonah Davis
Nick Jonah Davis lives in Derbyshire, England, which is a place where evidence of older editions of England is always easy to find. Successive eras likewise coincide in his music. Davis plays acoustic and electric guitars, drawing on both American and English folk and instrumental traditions. He has worked with like-minded folk, such as C. Joynes and Sharron Kraus, and is also an established guitar teacher and provider of therapeutic musical interventions. He’s been recording the occasional solo record since 2009, and in 2016, Dusted’s Bill Meyer had this to say about House of Dragons: “the Nottingham-based guitarist isn’t living in bifurcations of the past, and he isn’t asking us to either. Rather, he invites the listener into a world bounded by the resonance of his tunings and the vividness of his evolving melodies.” Thread Recordings is about to release a swell new LP, When the Sun Came, and Davis has compiled a list of sounds made by some of his favorite associates.
Even for solo guitarists, music is a collaborative, social thing. For this list I’ve picked some music by artists that I’ve collaborated, recorded or gigged with over the last decade or so. Members of the NJD home team.
Kogumaza — “Ursids”
WAAT048 Split 7" w/Hookworms by Kogumaza
When I lived in Nottingham, Kogumaza were my favorite band in town. They play deep, droning riff-based cosmic guitar music which draws on their backgrounds playing with local heroes like Lords, Rattle and Bob Tilton. They’ve also done their homework, having sat in with heavy hitters like Glenn Branca, Damo Suzuki and Boredoms. This tune was recorded in Nottingham, with Nathan Bell of Lungfish sitting in on bass. I was the assistant engineer on this session, and remember getting a pleasing headful of Katy Brown’s kick drum as we set up the mics. Mind-manifesting stuff.
Ex-Easter Island Head — “Large Electric Ensemble Third Movement”
Large Electric Ensemble by Ex-Easter Island Head
Liverpool’s Ex-Easter Island Head are a revelation. They repurpose electric guitars through a variety of extended techniques, with unprecedented, nourishing results. I was lucky enough to play a couple of shows as a member of their Large Electric Ensemble, a 12-guitar band powered by 1 drummer and multiple Arts Council pizzas. I learned a lot from them in terms of playing guitar with craftily-deployed allen keys and bolts. Living proof that people can and do make genuinely beautiful, ground-breaking music without being all precious and up themselves about it. Good lads.
C Joynes and the Furlong Bray — “Sang Kancil”
The Borametz Tree by C Joynes & The Furlong Bray
Joynes and I have been fellow travelers in the solo guitar realm for many years now. We’ve probably seen more of each other’s gigs than anyone else alive. I was really pleased to be invited into the making of the Borametz Tree album. Not exactly sure how you’d describe my role on that project, but it involved some bass playing, some refereeing and, in the case of this piece, heading into my cellar with Nathan Mann to process some sounds through my echo units. I really love this bizarre, swirling piece of music. It defies description and I really can’t see how it could have happened under any circumstances. Power to the Furlong Bray.
Jim Ghedi — “Bramley Moor”
A Hymn For Ancient Land by Jim Ghedi
Jim popped up a few years ago, around the same time as Toby Hay, and has been a sure source of decent sounds ever since. Jim’s initial, masterful solo guitar work has bloomed out into an exploration of both traditional folk and his own songwriting. Having sat right next to him when we played together in my village a couple of years ago, I can confirm that he has a huge, resonant chest voice. Luckily, he always commits to his guitar just as fully, as you can hear on this jaunty instrumental on which I played some weissenborn. Nathan Mann pops up again playing percussion on this one, small world…
Cath and Phil Tyler — “King Henry”
The Ox and the Ax by Cath and Phil Tyler
I first met Cath and Phil at the legendary Sin Eater festival, a 3-day weekend of fine underground music and excellent ale at an isolated pub in Shropshire. Almost everyone on this list played there actually. This is folk music as it should be played, plain and flinty with a complete focus on the song. Understatement goes a long way in this music and, I suspect because of this, Phil is one of the most criminally under-rated guitarists around. There’s a little part of me that lives for Cath’s jaw harp break at the end of this one.
Toby Hay — “Now in a Minute”
New Music For The 12 String Guitar by Toby Hay
Toby has a special place in my heart for lining me up an annual show in a cafe at the wonderful Green Man festival for the past several years, meaning my family could go for free. Here’s a near-perfect example of a miniature acoustic study from his album New Music for the 12 String Guitar. The guitar in question was custom-built for Toby by Roger Bucknall of Fylde guitars. Fylde put out the word that a label was looking for a young guitarist to make a record on a custom-built Fylde that they would commission, and I immediately suggested Toby. He rose to the occasion. Reckon he owes me a handmade guitar though; I’ll give him a nudge one of these days.
The Horse Loom — “Silver Ribbon”
The Horse Loom by The Horse Loom
Steve Malley played in post-punk bands back in the day, gigging alongside the likes of Fugazi. He later picked up a Fylde guitar and went down an acoustic rabbit hole where his love of British folk and flamenco come to the fore. The DIY-or-die roots of his playing flash an occasional fin. After we met I persuaded him to come down to Nottingham and let me record his first album in First Love studio. He did the whole thing in a day and it’s awesome. This is my favorite instrumental from that collection.
Sharron Kraus — “Sorrow’s Arrow”
Joy's Reflection is Sorrow by Sharron Kraus
I started playing shows with Sharron as we were both UK artists on the Tompkins Square label at the time, so it kind of made sense. She’s a bit of an institution in psych-folk circles and eventually I began playing on her records and at live shows, which has been a real joy. This tune features some heavy drones and an occasional splish of my lap steel. It’s classic Kraus — mournful, insightful, immersive. If you want to hear someone with a bigger brain than yours talking about the weirder side of life, check out her Preternatural Investigations podcast.
Haress — “Wind the Bobbin”
Haress by HARESS
Haress is centered around the twin electric guitar work of Liz Still and David Hand. Located in downright gorgeous rural Shropshire, they ran the Sin Eater Festival and still put out essential music on Lancashire and Somerset Records. I reckon they’ve helped me out more than anyone over the years, releasing House of Dragons on vinyl and always setting me up a show when I need one. This gorgeous piece features Nathan Bell again, this time on trumpet. Those Nathans do get around.
Burd Ellen — “Chi-Mi-Bhuam”
Chi Mi Bhuam by Burd Ellen
I first saw Debbie Armour singing with Alasdair Roberts, a good start. When I went up to play in Glasgow in 2018, I asked if she’d like to open up my show at the Glad Café, which she did, alone except for a borrowed harmonium. I was mesmerized, I think everyone was. Too good for a support slot. Here’s a Gaelic vocal piece which demonstrates exactly who we’re dealing with here, a profoundly talented and committed artist with a lifelong immersion in traditional music, using it as a springboard into something entirely her own.

OTP Asks
28. Who is the fussy eater and who will eat food even if they’ve dropped it on the floor?
Haha. I never considered this, but let’s see. I have a few fussy eaters. Arcanus and Saren would see themselves as too sophisticated for some foods, though Arcanus is a bit worse than Saren. He often eats food that looks like it’d do better on a magazine spread of fake foods than actually be eaten. Another fussy, though not as much, eater would be Cassia. I think she’s one to watch her figure even when she knows she shouldn’t let herself get carried away just because she sees movie stars and models with a certain body shape. She eats, thankfully, but maybe not so much junk food as others.
Eat off the floor, you say? Definitely Damo, lol. He’s like a black hole, so he definitely won’t let any food go to waste. As a kid, he used to do it all the time, but at least now he doesn’t drop food as much because he was definitely someone to quote the five-second rule.
42. Who sneaks in cookies in the shopping cart?
Most don’t really need to sneak stuff in, but I’d have to say that Jane is probably the biggest one to slip away and bring lots of junk food over in secret. It’s not that anyone would blame her for wanting it, but she does like the idea of treating it like she’s sneaking in contraband better than just grabbing it off the shelves. That, and she got the habit when the twins were kids and she snuck food in for both herself and the kiddos.
Thanks for the asks!

Rishton Ka Chakravyuh (Episode 10) - I Don’t Know What To Do With So Many Women Who Speak Their Minds
Aug 17, 2017
Ooooh the big day is finally here.
In Satarupa’s absence, Vikram (WHO IS ACTUALLY THE EVIL DADAJI) calls Somdev Guruji to tell him they’ve decided to adopt Avdhoot and make him heir. And Guruji needs to pick out a date for his pagdi rasam. I knew it! This Satarupa left without telling them what she is going to do and now whenever she brings back Anami, it’s going to be the worst kind of surprise.
Guruji, ofc, also doesn’t see any need to tell them and is just Disapproving and stuff and asks if Baldev and Satarupa are okay with this. Dadaji is like “who even cares if they are, keh diya na, bas keh diya.” All patriarchal af evil north Indian men have the same Yash-Raichand-spirit. Guruji reluctantly gives them a date that’s about 4 days away.
They’re very good at syncing real time with episode-time. I don’t know how long they’ll be able to keep it up what with tellywood’s favourite devices like leaps and dragging dramatic occasions for days, but at the moment, whenever they have to make a specific mention of time, you can pretty much assume the day the episode airs is also the day in their fictional world. I’ve realised, I almost want Avdhoot to become heir and ruin everything for this family and Dadaji especially. They’re truly scum. Only thing that stops me from rooting for Avdhoot is the thought of the “hazaaron mazdoor” that they keep bringing up to make themselves look like benevolent overlords. Sure. 😒
Moving back to the bit I actually care about, Satarupa and Damo have made their entry. Damo, who is Satarupa’s spokesperson in front of peasants, does all the talking because apparently asking the man you gave your only daughter to 17 years ago to return her is Too Much Work for royalty. 😒😒😒
Murari Pathak is dumbfounded but Madhu is the tiger-mom we all need.
She doesn’t give Satarupa a second to recoup and just goes all out offensive. She’s all “do we look like a children’s bank ki jab chaha deposit kiya aur jab chaha loan le liya?” And “Anami is OUR daughter, because karam comes above janam according to the same scriptures this useless husband of mine keeps reading.” She actually asks whether they’ll leave izzat se by themselves or does she need to call a couple of pehelwans to get the job done. You go, Madhu! Anami’s sass is obviously not just hereditary but also learned from Madhu.
Murari manages to calm Madhu down and tells her they need to hear these people out. Satarupa pretty candidly adds on to what Damo said about how she gave away her daughter 17 years ago to save the ‘vansh’ but today they’re vansh-less anyway and Anami is their only hope.
At this opportune moment, Anami enters and tells her dad to give the nice lady a discount for his services as a shraddh pandit, which is why she thinks they’ve come. Madhu would hustle her away and not tell her anything but the voice of sanity in THIS house, Murari, stops her. He tells Anami the truth about Satarupa being her mother, and that she’s really a “princess.”
Anami is devastated and to cover for herself, wordlessly rushes to the vessels kept on a bench and starts eating aggressively. She’s one of the angry-eaters, I see. Damo does not know how to read the room because she starts telling Anami about all the advantages she’ll have at Lal Mahal and what a life of luxury she’ll lead. Anami is like, “why now? why have you come after all these years?” Damo (OMG you gotta STOP) tells her that now that the Yuvraj is dead, they need Anami back. Satarupa tries to stop her and is all “No, I love you, baby. I want to fix what I ruined.” But Anami catches on immediately and jumps on to this. She says “Ok, Imma go with you right this instant if you can answer just one question. Would you have come for me if your son had been alive?”
This is the face of a woman whose faith in her parenting skills have been reaffirmed.
Satarupa can’t bring herself to lie quite THIS much and Anami is like “LOL this isn’t ‘pyaar,’ it’s ‘svaarth,’ my matlabi maharani.” She actually says the words “matlabi maharani.” That’s a direct quote.
This is the face of a girl who takes no prisoners.
Madhu jumps in and tells Satarupa and Damo to leave again and Satarupa tries to appeal to her maternal side ki “I’m super grateful that you brought up my daughter but please try to see things from my perspective.” LOL WHAT PERSPECTIVE? Madhu didn’t go around giving away daughters to incorrectly fulfill lame-ass prophecies.
Anami must have the last word, obv. So she’s like ‘bro, Panditayin didn’t bring up YOUR daughter, you gave birth to HER daughter and let’s just realise that’s all there is between us.”
Damo, who really needs lessons in PR, tries to say some variation of blood is thicker than water but Anami shuts her down with “Yeah I know cos I been tryna wash away the taint of this blood ever since I’ve been old enough to understand what it means and the entire Ganga ain’t up to it.”
Then Satarupa, who is probably tired of playing the bechaari-mother, resumes her lion-persona and tells Anami that she may be stubborn but Sats is also her mother and that she’d better pack her stuff cos she’ll be back soon to take her home.
The face of a woman who is used to getting her way.
Oooh I LIVE for dramatic walking-away shots.
Poor Laddoo chases away the car, throwing stones and crying as he sees his worst nightmare of losing his sister coming true.
Back at Lal Mahal, Kamini (Pujan’s wife) accosts Pujan to ask what the fuck he thinks he’s up to, cos she’s not giving up her son to anybody. Pujan very sweetly tells her not to be a twit and see that the whole thing is a farce and even if Avdhoot calls Satarupa-Baldev his parents in public, he’ll inherit both Lal Mahal and Royal Steel which means Kamini will de facto rule over everything.
Kamini’s chiffon-saree appreciation moment. This woman takes Maharani Gayatri Devi as sartorial role model, I see.
Kamini immediately daydreams about wearing uglier sarees and heavy jewelry and having Satarupa do pochha. On the one hand, I’m glad she has such a vivid imagination and one should never be practical while daydreaming but on the other, I just want to laugh because no matter how much money or political clout Kamini has, she’d faint if Satarupa so much as looked at her sternly.
But I’m glad they used this scene to establish that a) Kamini actually cares about her son and b) Pujan is not an asshole to his twit of a wife.
In Benaras, Satarupa is moping over Anami’s words and she has all the sads. She tells Damo that each word of Anami’s cut her like a sword. Umm...she wasn’t wrong, you know? Like she didn’t say a single word that wasn’t true. You really are responsible for this whole fucking mess. So you can cut out the tears. You can’t possibly have such deep affection for a girl you’ve never met even if you did give birth to her. This is your pride crying because you’ve met your match.
Satarupa is a deeply flawed and unpleasant woman in many ways but I root for her solely because of how compelling Narayani Shastri makes her. Yeh aaj kal ke naujawan heroines should want to give one kidney to be able to hold audiences like Narayani has, for close to 20 years.
Anami also is taking dubkis in the Ganga, trying to forget her encounter with her mother. I don’t hold with prolonged dramatic crying but I’m HERE for all the picturesque shots of Anami looking pensive/angry/contemplative against the ghats.
Things are heating up in the precap. Adhiraj wants to know why Satarupa suddenly went to Benaras while Baldev is ordering someone to have Satarupa back by the next day (LOL Baldev, as though you can control anything she does). And Satarupa plays her goddamn ace by getting the cops to intervene and make the Pathaks give up Anami, by charging them with abduction since Anami is still a minor.

KHUx Finale Part 2 (like, the final Finale) - Thoughts
I ... I don’t even know where to begin. Then again, I don’t think anyone can after this. It’s been a few days and I think I can finally sit down and write down some things. I was waiting for a global update, watching Damo’s stream, and then when it didn’t drop ... you know, somehow I feel like this was meant to be lol. For old time’s sake, one last time going through this hassle of translating the japanese on the fly. Being together with all these people, reacting at the same time ... this experience, nothing can ever replicate that.
And boy oh boy was there a lot to react ...
There were still so many things left open this finale had to adress, so getting into it ... i was so nervous jhgbfhgd But, in the end I just have to say, it satisfied me. God, we got so much - - One final MoM and Luxu scene, traitor Luxu confirmed, the Foretellers were meant to trap darkness, that whole scene is SO gorgeous. - Brain saying goodbye to Lauriam, I’m so :(((((((( f u ck, he passed onto his “leadership” of the Union Leaders onto him and im SO sad just thinking about he forgets all this AAAAAAAAAAAA. I got a handshake and im so happy. Lauriam said he will see him again and I start crying again. - dont get me started on Ephemer, Skuld, Player. GODDDDD GOD GOD FUCK FUUUUCK FUCK. On one hand I would have kind of loved if Player was /really/ possessed by Darkness, as some kind of “oh yeah, you know how you’ve been using Guilt the whole time?” BUT YOU KNOW im good. No I’m not actually, because Ephemer’s last memory of Player being That “betrayal” wants me to lie down and cry forever. god this was good. This fight. I was wondering what the final boss would be ... never I would have expected it to be ... our best friends. - UUUGHGG BRAIN AND LUXU. I was SO very looking forward to that, I KNEW they would meet. ... I was pspsps-ing the No Name keyblade so hard. Just ... this scene. Brain wanting to sacrifice himself to save his friends. Saying he will just stay here and live out his life ... god, god it breaks me. Brain “Friendship is a beautiful thing”, “Friends, cool” Kingdomhearts. FUUUUUCK MEEE. He truly ... truly cared about them ... and then, Luxu does, too huh ... god i was at the edge of the seat when this scene cut to black jdgbdfhgbd - I’m .. I’m fine with Player’s fate. With all of the Players. I saw it coming and honestly - the delivery was beautiful. There is one canon Player, but ... do you want to be the canon Player? Would you do this descision - in the end, if you don’t, another Player will take that place. And thinking like this, I feel happy for my Player. She’s at rest. (My Player’s name is Aquanort and I never felt so. ,,,, wellp I guess thats true-, ever before djgbfd). The Dream Eater thing hit me so hard. Oh god Chirithy ... thank you for always keeping us safe ... forever. - The Dearly Beloved credits music im just :(((((((( how hard can I cry? The answer is yes. - takes a deep breath. Everything after the credits destroyed me. fuck. f u c k For one I’m glad we finally see where Lauriam, Elrena end up in the future, and of course Ventus ends up in the keyblade graveyard hh. ... Brain ... Brain ... my love. god. GOD. LUXU YOUUUUUUU. YOUU. I wanted for Brain to have No Name, I wanted for Brain and Luxu to be friends, AND THIS WENT A LITTLE TOO FAR - puts head into hands. GOD. GOD!!!!!!! (I’ll have to wait for the official english translation - but for now I would like to believe that Luxu did that to ... save Brain ...) - before I completely go into theory mode, ... Scala. Oh beautiful Scala, what has happened - god I love this design. Gives off such a different vibe. Was this your idea, Ephemer ... thank you for giving me canon Scala Brain. God bless finally. I still do believe in the Ancestor Theory, yet I guess grandfather now comes close huh lol. I’m okay with this. Scala Founder Ephemer is just excellent. Look at him go. God I’m so proud of him. And Brain gonna step into his footsteps huh ... like the second in charge he always was. im so emo lmao - if Brain does take over, the sheer contrast between the two Scala designs we know now, ah, ... dark for Ephemer, light for Brain - I’d like to imagine they both each build it with the other one in mind, what they wanted it to be. Heh. Oh these two ... - Luxu-Brain got my mind broken. Literally. I was soooo sooo confused. How could Luxu have taken his body as his first vessel, if Brain ended up in the future somewhere in Scala - the only explanation I currently have is, that Luxu “saved” Brain by taking his body, because Brain refused to leave Daybreak, sent his heart into the future, and with his hat acting as a Medium, Brain regained his body, just like Maleficent did in KH2. Brain in Scala immediately asks about the others, which is the last thought he had in the Ark room. If he’d remember the whole Luxu thing, I don’t think - no. That’s the only thing that my mind can accept for now lol.
Brain is my favorite character from UX, he has been for the past years, and man ... my son ... I will miss you. All of these characters. I love hem so much. I’m so glad to be a fan of khux. Like I said in the beginning of this post, the experiences I had with this game, I cannot express it.
I love KHUx. Not everything has been answered, but like every KH, that was to be expected. Dark Road is ending later this year and I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of what happened in this finale got touched upon. Now having it canon that Ephemer and Brain were in Scala ... give me the forbidden flashbacks, Dark Road.
Thank you, KHUx. With all these ups and downs, I will remember you for being the greatest.
I want nothing more than for these characters to meet again in the future. To tell each other about their lives. Find each other again as friends.
That’s all I can say <3 thank you for reading.
May your heart be your guiding key.

Objetos iniciales (Starting Items):
Objetos base (Core Items):
