damnnlyssa replied to your post darth-lumines: I just really love the STAR WARS...
But they’re not written by God damn George Lucas so they aren’t an actual part of the series they’re basically fanfic
Hi! I’m assuming you meant to reply to one of the book blogging posts, rather than a fanfic recs posts? Because, well, yes, the fic recs posts is about fanfic. :D As for the novels, they were approved by the Lucasfilm Storygroup and they were (until the mass decanonizing in 2014) supplemental canon. While things did eventually get to be a mess re: continuity because there were so many different creators and the whole “how much does this really count as ‘canon’ when it’s supplemental canon?” discussion is a thorny one, but they were still officially greenlit by the Storygroup and so were still a canon of a sort! I generally think it’s fine to disregard supplementary canon if that’s what you want to do! There’s some stuff that I think is ridiculous and I have no problem throwing it out if it doesn’t fit. And I’m actually really onboard with generally holding George’s parts of the greater story to be above the other stuff re: canonicity! But I don’t think it’s fair to say the books were basically fanfic, because they were held to official boundaries and guidelines that fanfic wasn’t. And while not perfect the Storygroup generally did at least try to keep to a semi-coherent whole with supplementary canon. For me, I just go with “canon” and “saga canon” and “supplementary canon” and “Legends canon” and am fine with those distinctions. :) (Though sometimes I just say “canon” as shorthand, but context usually gets across what I mean, I hope!)

Plus, I teach preschool and puzzles are one of the most effective target tools we use to start structuring children for primary school. I already went through all the schooling trust me lol you'll learn once you're out why the logo is what it is.
This is exactly one of the problems with the puzzle piece. It's a childrens toy. And most autistic people are adults. And people keep forgetting that. Which is why it's such a problem.
I'm not in school, I'm not a child, I'm an adult with opinions about a symbol meant to represent me. You having taught autistic children doesn't actually give you any insight into the opinions of autistic people. Your inability to listen to autistic people and your belief that you know more about the autistic rights movement than actual autistic people is a massive ableist red flag TBH.
I know why the logo is what it is. All the reasons actually claimed by people are horribly ableist. If there are actual, non ableist reasons, how about you actually state them, rather than being a patronsing little git about it with the "you'll understand when you're older"?

I feel like so many people have been having them lately but mine will just not go away. I've had it since the beginning of December and it keeps getting smaller and then coming back but it never goes away completely. :((

I teach autistic children, trust me you're not going to argue the puzzle piece as a perfect representation of autism. I'm sorry you choose to view it in a negative way. Maybe you'll understand once you start working with kids.
I AM AUTISTIC. The opinions of the people the puzzle piece is actually supposed to represent are more important than the opinions of people who work with/parent/knew/ran into an autistic child one time. I am not a child. The puzzle piece is offensive as a symbol, and has been abandoned by the organisation which invented it for that reason.
"You're not going to argue the puzzle piece as perfect representation of autism" Are you trying to argue that a symbol widely opposed by autistic adults is a perfect representation of autism?
Did you read the links? Did you bother? Because the puzzle symbol is ableist, and has horrible connotations. Like autism is a puzzle. Which is offensive as fuck.
"I'm sorry you chose to view it in a negative way", well, you're an insincere patronising person aren't you. And, no, it IS a negative symbol. This is unquestionable. The ideas it was invented to represent are abhorrent to most autistic people.
I'm not going to work with kids, and I don't see how the fuck working with kids would give me more of an insight into autism than being autistic. And I really don't see why working with kids would make me think it's ok to use dehumanising symbols, or make me any less wary of using a symbol used by organisations like autism speaks, which support eugenics and places like the JRC, which the goddamned UN said was torturing autistic people.
