Had the joy of having lunch with my friend Elise today. We had delicious burgers as we hung out at Farnsley Moorman park. We explored the lovely garden, saw some beautiful butterflies, and the house that they’ve been restoring and maintaining. Plus she got me these GORGEOUS earrings from @dames_a_la_mode for my birthday!!!! A wonderful way to start off my Wednesday ❤️ #friends #outdoors #picnic #lunch #history #historicalhouse #park #farnsleymoorman #louisville #louisvilleky #nature #naturephotography #ohioriver #butterfly #birthdaypresent #historicaljewelry #damesalamode https://www.instagram.com/p/CEZqewHAaFF/?igshid=6ytocgz7eqpj

Hi! I don't know much about clothes or sewing but I enjoy seeing about them on the dinosaur blog anyway :) I was wondering if you had any reccomendations for resources about historical clothes? The fandom I write for is set in 1830s England and atm I'm just like 'yes he had a fashionable waistcoat. We all know what that is' and can't get any more specific, so it would be nice to be able to include some detail but idk how to tell what's accurate for the period or what? Thank you for any advice!
Hm, well I haven’t done any 19th century stuff, but yes I can give you some suggestions!
Read sources from the era. Books, newspapers, diaries, fashion magazines. Look at portraits and fashion plates and photos of extant garments.
The Cut of Men’s Clothes (link is to a free pdf) has a good overview of how menswear evolved, and each chapter also contains a series of quotes talking about the fashion of the time. I’ve just looked and it has two quotes from the 1830′s. One is from The Whole Art Of Dress, which is from 1830 and written by an English cavalry officer, and is on Google books! I’m sure with a bit of searching you can find many other digitized documents that will be helpful.
@damesalamode has posted many fashion plates from the 1830′s, and they’re all tagged by year if you need to be that specific. (But keep in mind that fashion plates are depictions of what was most fashionable at the time, and aren’t necessarily an accurate portrayal of what everyday people wore, much like formal portraits.)
Sewing blogs are a good place to find pictures, information, and links to more sources. American Duchess and a bunch of others recently did 1830′s outfits, and posted a ton of information about them. Victorian Tailoring hasn’t posted in years, but has a series of posts on making an 1830′s suit.
But perhaps all that sewing stuff isn’t necessary if you’re looking for writing references? I think reading fashion magazines and journals and whatnot is probably the way to go. And looking at pictures! I like collecting reference images on pinterest, but always be sure to track down the original source because there’s a load of mislabeled stuff out there. Portraits and extant garments are good, as are other things like fabric swatch books. There were some pretty wacky patterned fabrics in that period that you wouldn’t expect!

I would date her clothing to the very late 1790s or up until about 1803.  It’s a beautiful image!

- 18th Century Love Background
Size: 2398x1600 - I have a 1280x800 desktop, so it appears best on mine with "Stretch" rather than centered.
To avoid saving it as an html document, go to high-res, click it to make it full size, then click "view image info" then click save as and it should save as a jpg.
Yes this is what I've been working on this past hour. All images are from my archive, but I have to thank damesalamode, ornamentedbeing, ladybeheaded, vivalareine, fripperiesandfops, charlottecorday, historicalfashion, 18thcenturyhistory, and titam! I know I probably bug you guys with all my reblogging! But I love all your blogs so much!
Also thank you to all my new followers! The more fans of the 18th c. the better! ^^
