Are you ready to turn back the clock and reclaim your youthful glow? Aging is a natural process, but with the right tips and tricks, you can slow it down and maintain radiant skin for years to come. In Dallas, there are plenty of options for anti aging treatments that can help you look and feel your best. From skincare routines to innovative procedures, let’s explore some easy-to-follow tips and tricks to help you achieve ageless beauty.
Tumblr media
Understanding Anti Aging
Before we dive into specific treatments and techniques, it’s essential to understand what causes aging and how we can address it. Aging occurs due to a combination of factors, including genetics, lifestyle choices, and environmental influences. As we age, our skin loses elasticity, collagen production slows down, and wrinkles start to appear. However, by taking proactive steps, we can minimize the visible signs of aging and maintain a youthful appearance.
Skincare Essentials
A solid skincare routine is the foundation of any anti aging regimen. Start by cleansing your skin twice daily to remove dirt, oil, and impurities that can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Choose a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type, whether it’s dry, oily, or combination. After cleansing, apply a moisturizer to hydrate and nourish your skin, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Look for products containing ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid, known for their anti aging properties.
Protect Your Skin from the Sun
One of the most effective ways to prevent premature aging is by protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Exposure to sunlight can accelerate the aging process, leading to wrinkles, age spots, and sagging skin. Make sunscreen a daily essential, even on cloudy days, and reapply every two hours when outdoors. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to ensure adequate protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
Eat a Balanced Diet
What you eat can have a significant impact on your skin’s health and overall appearance. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats provides essential nutrients that support skin health and combat aging from within. Incorporate foods high in antioxidants, such as berries, leafy greens, and nuts, to help protect your skin from free radical damage and promote a youthful complexion. Additionally, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water helps maintain skin elasticity and suppleness.
Get Plenty of Sleep
Quality sleep is essential for skin rejuvenation and repair. Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep per night to allow your body ample time to rest and regenerate. During sleep, your body produces collagen, a protein that helps keep your skin firm and youthful. Lack of sleep can lead to dark circles, dull skin, and fine lines, so prioritize getting enough shut-eye for a radiant complexion.
Explore Anti Aging Treatments
In addition to a diligent skincare routine and healthy lifestyle habits, there are various anti aging treatments available in Dallas to address specific concerns and target signs of aging. From facials and chemical peels to injectables like Botox and dermal fillers, there’s something for everyone looking to rejuvenate their skin. These treatments are performed by skilled professionals who can customize a plan tailored to your unique needs and goals.

THIS.
I risk repeating myself, but this is for all those who say that Zutara can't happen because of the age difference of the actors :
Tumblr media
Let's be clear, if Zutara does not arrive, it will certainly be because they want to stick more to the original series. But not for a question of age. Whether you like it or not, whether you find it moral or not (and it is your most total and legitimate right), Netflix has already proven that the age difference between the actors does not stop them (especially that physically, it will not cause a shock like with Kataang).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So please stop saying that the ship won't happen because of the age difference between the actors, it's getting ridiculous and infuriating. If Zutara doesn't happen, it will be for different reasons.

Kissinger’s unwavering support for brutal regimes still haunts Latin America
Tumblr media
In Chile, leftists were tortured, tossed from helicopters and forced to watch relatives be raped. In Argentina, many were “disappeared” by members of the brutal military dictatorship that held detainees in concentration camps.
It all happened with the endorsement of Henry Kissinger, the former U.S. secretary of state who died Wednesday at age 100.
As tributes poured in for the towering figure who was the top U.S. diplomat under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, the mood was decidedly different in South America, where many countries were scarred deeply during the Cold War by human rights abuses inflicted in the name of anti-communism and where many continue to harbor a deep distrust of their powerful neighbor to the north.
“I don’t know of any U.S. citizen who is more deplored, more disliked in Latin America than Henry Kissinger,” said Stephen Rabe, a retired University of Texas at Dallas history professor who wrote a book about Kissinger’s relationship with Latin America. “You know, the reality is, if he had traveled once democracy returned to Argentina, to Brazil, to Uruguay — if he had traveled to any of those countries he would have been immediately arrested.”

A house in virginia.
House in Virginia clinics are hard. Just emotionally. A couple of my patients joke about it in the way you have to alleviate the pain, "let's call it a house in virginia"
Tumblr media
All the history particularly of the older patients who lived this crazy experience in the 80s epidemic days before the age of HAART (highly active anti retroviral therapies) can be particularly soul destroying - if it wasn't for their upbeat outlook on life having survived. I had a hard time but an illuminating one watching the Dallas Buyers Club. Because now we treat it like we treat any other chronic disease, it's mostly manageable, liveable. So long as you take that one tablet a day.
Think about my LGBTQIA friends all the time after these clinics. How different everyone's lives are now compared to 30-40 yrs ago. We are the lucky ones. Would my friends have survived had they been born in another country or another decade. They have access to PrEP if they need it. I try not to contemplate this. But these clinics do hit me in the face from time to time.

List of Your Ten Childhood Ships
Thanks @thefirstcourtesan for tagging me. I'm so showing my age here, lol I'm going to count "childhood" right up through the end of high school for these purposes. God, I'm straining my brain. lol What's sad is, outside of Jodie Dallas on Soap, I cannot even recall a queer character, much less pairing, from my childhood. How sad is that? So this list is def hetero as it comes.
This is in no order - not really...
Princess Leia and Han Solo - Star Wars: OK, this was THE couple of my childhood. I was OBSESSED and still am. There was NO better movie than The Empire Strikes Back. The "I love you." "I know." sequence. Goddamn, I've always had a type; it goes back to childhood. I'm ashamed (not really).
Tumblr media
Lando Calrissian & Princess Leia - Star Wars: OK - this is bringing back memories - and this is fucking crazy - I did write fanfic as a kid, and it was a Han/Leia/Lando triangle (as good as a 5th grader can write...). God, I'd kill to have that notebook now, and OMG, what a predictor for DTI. 😂😂😂 Even as a tween, I knew that would have been some juicy triangle that never came to be. lol
Tumblr media
Sandy & Danny - Grease: Some asides. I was WAY too young to be watching this when it was out (my Mom was insane). Most of it went over my head, and in retrospect, I am so anti-most messages in Grease - but that doesn't mean I don't still love it. I do. And OMG How I loved Sandy & Danny and danced around my living room pretending I was them. lol
Tumblr media
Jessie & Angie - All My Children: I was a soap junkie, so I have a lot of soap ships - but this is one of my all-time favorites. A modern-day Romeo & Juliet, and the soap world's first true black super-couple. Angie's well-to-do family forbade a relationship with her obvious soulmate, Jesse. They eventually got together, but in true soap fashion, that didn't last. A death that wasn't really a death, among other things, impeded. But how I remember watching those summers and rushing home from school to check the VCR and pray it recorded. lol OLD SCHOOL!
Tumblr media
Kevin & Winnie - The Wonder Years: This was the sweetest show and first love story. The ending was so poignant and probably led to my penchant for beautiful but heart-wrenching endings. I need to rewatch this sometime.
Tumblr media
Maddie & David - Moonlighting: This one makes me sad, thinking of Bruce Willis's current condition. 😢 These two drove each other crazy, but the sexual tension radiated from the TV screen. They were the ultimate "will they???" couple, and even when they did, they still never really got it together, but that didn't mean I stopped rooting for them. Sadly, this show is just about completely not available on streaming/reruns due to musical copyright issues.
Tumblr media
Nina Cortland & Cliff Warner - All My Children: Told you. I was a soap addict, and AMC will forever be my favorite show. I don't remember how old I was, but I remember that their wedding took place THE DAY that we went back to school, and my prepubescent little girlfriends and I LOST OUR SHIT. This wasn't the days of reruns, this wasn't the days of DVR, this wasn't even the days of Soap Central (y'all don't even know what that is). These were the days of "You missed it, bitch - so sad." And I was...I was...
Tumblr media
Maria & Georg - The Sound of Music: OK - I loved musicals from a very young age, and I am forever obsessed with The Sound of Music. I had a mad crush on Georg as a young girl, proof that assholes with a heart underneath it all have ALWAYS been my thing. lol
Tumblr media
Dwayne & Whitley - A Different World: It was not a pairing I liked the idea of - initially. Whitley was such a spoiled, obnoxious, rich princess at the start, and Dwayne didn't seem like he'd ever have a chance, but as time moved on, they made it work, and I tuned in each week, dying for them to finally get together.
Tumblr media
John & Claire: The Breakfast Club - What can I say - I have a type? lol This was the iconic couple of my teen years, and if had been writing fanfic at that time, I would have had a treasure trove for them.
Tumblr media
Tagging @jamespotterthefirst @liaromancewriter @lucy-268 @genevievemd @angelasscribbles @icecoffee90 @cariantha @doriopenheart @peonierose @potionsprefect @coffeeheartaddict2 @lilyoffandoms @storyofmychoices @annoyingmillenialnewbie @utterlyinevitable and anyone who wishes to jump in and play!

It’s hard to imagine a more dangerous place for abortion providers than Texas. Doctors who perform abortions face up to life in prison, with civil penalties of at least $100,000. That’s to say nothing of the physical risks: violence against providers and clinics has skyrocketed since Roe was overturned, with a 2022 study showing major increases in stalking, death threats, and invasions.
So you can imagine how OBGYNs felt when they got an email last month from the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology (ABOG) telling them they’d have to take their certifying exams in Texas this year.
[…]
ABOG, headquartered in Dallas, is telling candidates that they “should not be at legal risk” because Texas’ criminal and civil penalties only apply to abortions performed in the state. But the group hasn’t addressed the danger for doctors in pro-choice states who ship abortion medication to Texas patients via telehealth—potentially a tremendous criminal risk.
It was also just last week that a group of Republican attorneys general, including Texas AG Ken Paxton, pushed the Biden administration to allow them access to medical records of those who get out-of-state abortions. So if there’s a question of how broadly Texas law enforcement plans to interpret their ban, it seems fair that doctors would want to err on the side of caution.
Especially considering that the exam itself necessitates that some doctors talk about their work in abortion care: In order to be certified, OBGYNs must prepare a list of cases that they’ve worked on and are ready to discuss with a panel of examiners.
For OBGYNs of reproductive age, the threat of traveling to Texas goes beyond legal concerns. Those who are pregnant or considering becoming pregnant aren’t keen on being in a state that would rather let them die than provide them an abortion.
And while ABOG says they have a partnership with a nearby hospital offering “high standards of obstetrical care in medical emergencies,” pregnant OBGYNs know better than anyone what the standard of care is—and that they’ll be unable to get it in Texas. After all, the state is being sued right now by 15 women whose lives and health were endangered by the ban.
There’s also something uniquely terrifying about the idea of hundreds of OBGYNs, many of whom perform abortions, all descending on one publicly-listed building at the same time in a state filled with anti-abortion sentiment, few gun regulations, and a recent spate of mass shootings. (ABOG’s emailed promise that their staff is trained in “active shooter response” isn’t all that reassuring.)
Given the legal, physical, and emotional threats to doctors—testing-taking is anxiety-inducing enough in a state where you’re not afraid of being arrested or killed—there’s no real justification for ABOG’s decision.
It’s plainly unethical to ask doctors to put their freedom and lives at risk over an exam that could be given remotely or in another state.
[…]
Given that the exams have been successfully conducted remotely, and that ABOG is explicit in their support for reproductive rights—even threatening to revoke the board certification of doctors who spread misinformation about the procedure—some OBGYNs believe the organization’s insistence on holding the exams in Texas must be a financial one.

Identify the Causes of Golfer's Elbow
Golfer’s elbow Dallas, a condition characterized by pain and inflammation on the inner side of the elbow, is not exclusive to golfers. It can affect anyone engaging in repetitive wrist and forearm motions. At Top Notch Vitality, we recognize the importance of identifying the causes of golfer’s elbow to empower individuals with the knowledge needed for prevention and effective treatment.
Tumblr media
Repetitive Movements:
A primary culprit behind a golfer’s elbow is repetitive movements, particularly those associated with sports like golf. Whether you’re perfecting your swing on the golf course or participating in activities involving continuous gripping and flexing of the wrist, the repetitive nature of these motions can lead to strain and inflammation in the tendons.
Incorrect Technique:
Using improper techniques during physical activities can significantly increase the risk of a golfer’s elbow. It’s crucial to pay attention to your form, especially in sports like golf, tennis, or weightlifting, where incorrect techniques can place excessive stress on the inner tendons of the elbow.
Overuse and Strain:
Overusing the forearm muscles without allowing sufficient time for rest and recovery is a common cause of the golfer’s elbow. Intense physical activities without proper breaks can contribute to the development of this condition.
Lack of Warm-up and Stretching:
Skipping warm-up exercises and neglecting proper stretching before engaging in physical activities can leave your muscles and tendons vulnerable to injury. Adequate warm-up routines and stretching are crucial in preventing a golfer’s elbow.
Age and Health Factors:
Age can be a contributing factor, as tendons become less flexible with aging, making them more susceptible to injury. Additionally, individuals with certain health conditions, such as arthritis, may be at a higher risk of developing a golfer’s elbow.
Prevention Strategies:
Preventing a golfer’s elbow involves adopting proper techniques, incorporating regular breaks, warming up adequately, and maintaining overall arm strength and flexibility. Top Notch Vitality recommends consulting with healthcare professionals or specialists for personalized advice based on your specific needs and activities.
Seeking Timely Treatment:
If you suspect you have a golfer’s elbow or are experiencing persistent pain, seeking timely treatment is essential. Rest, ice, physical therapy, and, in some cases, anti-inflammatory medications may be recommended to alleviate symptoms and promote healing.
Conclusion:
Understanding the causes of golfer’s elbow empowers individuals to take proactive steps toward prevention and seek timely treatment when needed. At Top Notch Vitality, we advocate for a holistic approach to health, emphasizing the importance of informed choices for a pain-free and active lifestyle.
By embracing this knowledge and incorporating preventive measures, individuals can confidently navigate their activities, knowing they are taking the necessary steps to protect their elbow health. For more insights into health and wellness, trust Top Notch Vitality as your partner in achieving and maintaining a vibrant life.

Trudy Ring at The Advocate:
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, known for his anti-LGBTQ+ views, has sued a doctor in the state for providing gender-affirming care to young people, the first such suit in the nation. Paxton filed the suit Thursday in Collin County District Court against May C. Lau, MD, a professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and a practitioner at that city's Children's Health Center. He alleges that Lau violated Texas’s law against gender-affirming care for transgender minors by providing cross-sex hormones to at least 21 young people for the purpose of gender transition. He also claims she violated the state’s business and commercial code by engaging in “false, misleading, and deceptive acts and practices to mislead pharmacies, insurance providers, and/or patients by falsifying medical records, prescriptions, and billing records to represent that her testosterone prescriptions are for something other than transitioning a child’s biological sex or affirming a child’s belief that their gender identity is inconsistent with their biological sex,” as the suit puts it.
“Growing scientific evidence strongly suggests that ‘gender transition’ interventions prescribed to or performed on children in an attempt to anatomically or hormonally alter their biological sex characteristics have damaging, long-term consequences,” says a press release from Paxton’s office. “Additionally, the prohibited treatments are experimental, and no scientific evidence supports their supposed benefits.” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, known for his anti-LGBTQ+ views, has sued a doctor in the state for providing gender-affirming care to young people, the first such suit in the nation. This is not true. Such treatments are not considered experimental, and they have been shown to have positive and even lifesaving effects on youth people. This care is supported by every major medical group in the U.S.
Anti-trans extremist Texas AG Ken Paxton (R) files a politically-motivated lawsuit against Dr. May C. Lau, MD, a practitioner at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center’s Children's Health Center for providing gender-affirming care services for trans youths.
The Texas v. Lau suit pushed the lie that gender-affirming care treatments are “experimental” and “dangerous.”

Things I should clarify:
Before I start posting that is….
I don’t condone drug use or any kind of alcoholic/addictive consumption. But this AU might contain those themes
Because it involves Greek Mythos, there will be a bunch of nsfw themes (for instance…..Zeus…..need I say more). So if you’re under the age of 18 or if you’re not mature enough to handle such matters where you’re not desensitized to it, then this AU might not be your your alley.
I do touch on certain current news topics to make it seem lively or more of a direct jab at it so it’s more funny. (South Park’s way of doing things kinda….i still don’t wanna see any anti-ship or hate/narcissistic pov’s over here. This is a positive space y’all. Let’s keep it that way).
Now that we got the negatives out of the way:
✅ You’re gonna be seeing a lot of Texas culture things come to light. Expect there to be a bunch of current local things you aren’t in the know of to come up! Hey it’s a learning experience yall!
Such as:
✅ highschool mums
✅ Wurstfest
✅ Whataburger references
✅ local shops you ain’t heard of maybe
✅ references to the Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio spurs (among other teams lmao)
Anyways, more to come with this AU! Look out for the first post soon…. It’ll most likely be a sketch dump or a quick comic.

George Maharis, September 1, 1928 – May 24, 2023
Mr. Maharis played Buz Murdock and Mr. Milner was Tod Stiles, friends who embark on a cross-country odyssey after Tod inherits the Corvette. They are among the least fleshed-out lead characters in television history, jarringly so by standards today, when Tony Soprano has inspired entire books. Buz was a hard-slugging guy from New York (not unlike Mr. Maharis himself), and Tod seemed rather preppy, but their main purpose each week was usually to get the show, literally and figuratively, to a place where it could tell a story about someone else.
And what stories they were. This was an era when television hadn’t yet settled into the pattern of silly sitcoms and not-too-taxing dramas that would define it for decades. A TV script — Mr. Silliphant, who died in 1996, wrote many for “Route 66” — could still aspire to be literature. That made for some clunkiness. Writers hadn’t fully grasped that television shows were not stage plays. But even at its most awkward, “Route 66” reached high.
Take, for instance, this slice of dialogue from a 1962 episode called “Aren’t You Surprised to See Me?” A religious nut takes Buz hostage in Dallas and threatens to kill him if the city’s population fails to follow the Ten Commandments for the next 24 hours. The man (played by David Wayne) explains himself in a dizzying monologue that foreshadows both the anti-establishment mood of the Vietnam era and the current laments of the religious right.
“Drop the scales from your eyes,” he tells Buz. “Consider the present society of the world. Are we still individuals, or are we prisoners of bureaucracy? Insects in vast, grinding systems, carrying out antlike, apparently rational actions with no human idea of the ends they serve? Ours is no longer a guilt culture in which control of wrongdoing is self-imposed by conscience. Instead we have a shame culture, one in which acts are judged good or evil solely on the basis of whether one is caught or not, in which the worst punishment is public humiliation, not private guilt. Ours is a world, Murdock, in which conscious morality is treated with derision and reason with scorn. This is an age which no longer waits patiently through this lifetime for the rewards in the next, but instead mills anxiously about overindulging, driven to cheat, driven to crime. So I have killed six men.
“Well, let me tell you that each time, I died with them. Each time I killed myself, too. So what is that insignificant sacrifice against the gigantic moral collapse of the world?”

Every night, the speck barely manages to land on the witch's hand. The little warm that it gives can be felt by Arthur, but it struggles to keep itself lit while submersed within void. Every night, Arthur hears the booming voice behind him. The void seemingly growing deep and more prominent with each syllable.
"And what will you give me?"
████████
Arthur had been born into a coven of witches. While it wasn't the biggest or the most prosperous coven in their homeland, they had managed to keep to themselves and kept their community fed. Arthur's parents, Faust and Clovis Pearson, were simple witches in an ancestral coven. Unfortunately for them, their coven had a rival clan of witches. However, it seemed the coven's misfortune wouldn't be due to their rivals, but rather from within their own.
The rival coven, by all accounts, was stronger than the one the Pearsons had been a part of. Their mastery over a demonic spirit caused their crops to die and their children to spoil. On occasion, some have said to have seen the beast as it killed friends, family, lovers, and neighbors. Arthur himself had seen it with his own eyes, experienced him in his own skin. Most would call him luck, but from that day forth, Arthur had wished he had been killed instead.
He remembers the beast dragging him across the ground, it's embellishment of antlers and horns scraping against the then young witch's skin and garments. Arthur remembers its talons dug at the sides of his neck, the way he was picked up from the ground he stumbled around as he tried to run away. He remembers the way they felt, the tension around his neck, taut and always on the brink of breaking open. Not knowing the beast's true demonic nature, Arthur pleads to the creature.
"Please." Arthur pleads to the beast. "I wish to survive."
The demon drags the backside of his hand across the young witch's face, tilting Arthur's face as it moved closer towards him. The young alpha could feel it's horns graze themselves against the temples of his head. Arthur remembers how he shivered in fear against his touch and how its hot, thick, and odorless breath caught itself in the young alpha's throat. He remembers the low deep voice of the demon, now a refrain of the young alpha's failure, wisped that same thick and hot breath down the witches throat as he asked:
"And what will you give me?"
" ████████ "
Arthur was never a religious man, hasn't changed much now, but if any close calls counted, this thing would have been it. The thing which had guided him into ensnaring his own soul, Arthur would have followed. He watches as fire spreads across his family's home, seeing the homes of his coven ablaze as well. Arthur unintentionally gotten his wish, he had survived their rival coven's attack. The thing he had payed with the feel of talons across his neck and a split tongue across his.
Since the beginning of the two coven's rivalry, the only idea the coven leaders could think of was to move. To move far and often. Keeping their location secret in hopes of finding an end to the rival coven's blood thirst. It would be a tradition Arthur would begin familiarizing himself with as the rival coven had continued to interrupt Arthur's search for normalcy. Upon doing so, Arthur finds himself in New Haven and for a moment, Arthur finds peace.
For a moment.
Every night it's the same dream. Every night the witch reaches out with arms outstretched, towards a red glow surrounded by the engulfing void and every night the same voice as he shields the red glow in his hand.
"What will you give me?"
"Anything."

Top 5 Bob Dylan myths, explained
youtube
TULSA — Has Bob Dylan ever stepped foot inside the Bob Dylan Center?
Tumblr media
“No, he hasn’t. And we don’t expect he ever will,” a staff member replied in a quick, measured manner that implied she’d heard your question a thousand times before.
It’s hardly a surprise that Dylan hasn’t visited his own museum.
After all, he didn’t acknowledge winning the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature for several weeks and blew off the annual Nobel ceremony in Sweden.
youtube
Ever since singing the phrase “don’t look back” in 1965, Dylan has mostly refused to examine his hallowed place in music and culture.
The singer — who’s still touring and recording at age 83 — had almost no involvement in the center other than selling his vast archives to the Tulsa-based George Kaiser Family Foundation, which opened the 30,000-square-foot museum in 2022 next door to its other project, the Woody Guthrie Center.
But even if the elusive artist won’t take part in a remembrance of things past, millions of fans are doing just that.
Not just in Tulsa, where a steady stream of visitors pored over hundreds of interactive displays about his career on a cold gray weekday in late November.
The main event takes place in movie theaters nationwide on Christmas Day with the opening of A Complete Unknown, the aptly titled biopic starring Timothée Chalamet as the young, curly-haired Dylan.
Directed by James Mangold, who also oversaw the Johnny Cash story Walk the Line, the film takes a mostly factual look at Dylan’s uneasy rise to fame from ’61 to ’65.
But according to news reports, the singer instructed filmmakers to include at least one scene that is totally fictional.
That’s par for the course with Dylan, who fabricated stories about being a carnival worker and a male prostitute before he was discovered in Greenwich Village folk clubs.
He also blurred reality in the 2019 pseudo-documentary Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese.
“That came from Bob. He loves to mix fact and fiction,” T Bone Burnett, Dylan’s longtime friend, told The Dallas Morning News in October.
So who is the real Bob Dylan?
youtube
Your guess is as good as anyone’s.
To help Dylan neophytes unwrap the enigma, here’s a look at five common myths.
Spokesman of his generation
After writing topical masterpieces like “The Times They Are A-Changin’” and “Blowin’ in the Wind,” Dylan was hailed as the mouthpiece for the anti-war and civil rights movements and a half dozen other causes.
“And here he is: Take him, you know him, he’s yours,” singer Ronnie Gilbert said, introducing him at 1964′s Newport Folk Festival.
There was just one problem.
You can’t be a spokesman if you refuse to speak.
Within months of being called the new prophet of social progress, Dylan stopped writing political songs, ceased giving interviews and publicly disavowed his role as “the prince of protest,” as he later dubbed it with a sneer.
In a Dylan Center exhibit on 1965 — the year he went electric and alienated folk purists — a concert review quotes him as telling fans:
“I’m sick of people asking ‘What does it mean?” It means nothing.’”
Years later, he said hearing the word “spokesman” made him physically ill.
Just a Guthrie clone
Some critics slammed Dylan for mimicking Woody Guthrie on his first few albums.
Yet for all his Guthrie-isms (the voice, the lyrics, the Greek fisherman’s cap), he was far from a Guthrie clone.
Tumblr media
He was more of an equal-opportunity sponge.
He borrowed melodies from countless old country, folk and gospel songs — sometimes credited, sometimes not.
Most of all, he borrowed heavily from the blues.
He filled his ’62 debut album Bob Dylan with a half dozen blues songs, including “See That My Grave Is Kept Clean” by Dallas legend Blind Lemon Jefferson.
youtube
Mississippi bluesman Robert Johnson — who recorded half of all his songs at 508 Park Ave. in Dallas — was another huge influence.
“From the first note, the vibrations from the loudspeaker made my hair stand up,” Dylan wrote about hearing Johnson’s music in Chronicles: Volume One, his impressionistic 2004 memoir.
Tumblr media
“The stabbing sounds from the guitar could almost break a window. When Johnson started singing, he seemed like a guy who could have sprung from the head of Zeus in full armor.”
His peers love him
Most of them do.
But the love is far from universal.
Judy Collins, who met him in ’59 when he was still Robert Zimmerman, practically tripped over her tongue describing him to The News earlier this year:
“He was a magical chisel into the preconceived idea of what this country was all about.”
He gets a mixed review from onetime girlfriend Joan Baez.
She’s depicted in A Complete Unknown calling him “kind of an a--hole.”
Yet she was fairly glowing when The News asked her about him in 2019.
“I mean, he’s a genius,” Baez said.
“He gave us the best songs we’ve ever had.”
And then there’s Joni Mitchell.
Though the two were friendly in the ‘70s, she lashed out at him in a 2010 Los Angeles Times interview:
“Bob is not authentic at all. He’s a plagiarist, and his name and voice are fake. Everything about Bob is a deception.”
Refuses to sell out
Everyone knows Dylan marches to his own beat.
But what’s often forgotten is that he isn’t above making a quick buck.
Tumblr media
At the Bob Dylan Center, you can buy his Heaven’s Door whiskey, supposedly “co-created” by the singer and named after his 1973 song “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.”
youtube
In 2004, he appeared in a Victoria’s Secret TV ad, brooding and flashing his glimmering blue eyes like a fashion model.
And in 1996, he licensed “The Times They Are A-Changin’” for use in a Bank of Montreal ad campaign.
As he put it so well on Bringing It All Back Home, “Money doesn’t talk, it swears.”
You gotta see him in concert
Some musicians really need to be witnessed in the flesh for you to fully appreciate them.
Dylan?
Not so much.
In the 13 concerts I’ve seen, he’s been brilliant a few times, unveiling bold new arrangements of old songs and singing with soulful urgency.
More often than not, a Dylan show is an exercise in frustration, especially for newcomers.
Performing in April at the Music Hall at Fair Park, he stayed hidden in the shadows behind a keyboard, barely acknowledged the audience and skipped all his best-known songs in favor of tunes from his 2020 album Rough and Rowdy Ways.
Tumblr media
Some die-hard fans loved the show. But most of the audience simply seemed puzzled — which is precisely how Dylan wants it.
Did Bob Dylan Invent Bootcut Jeans?
This holiday season, if you find yourself parked in a theater seat to witness Timothée Chalamet embody an early-1960s Bob Dylan in the upcoming biopic A Complete Unknown, keep an eye out for the changing hems of Dylan’s blue jeans.
Tumblr media
Indeed, while the new James Mangold-directed film follows a four-year period in Dylan’s career, from his 1961 arrival in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village to his “going electric” at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, it also traces the musician’s shifting self-presentation—most notably through his changing hairstyles, but also his denim.
When Dylan lands in New York City with little more than a snap-buttoned cap, an acoustic guitar, and a dream of meeting Woody Guthrie, he wears a farmer-ish pair of late-’50s Levi’s 501s; by the time he plugs in his amp at Newport, he’s rocking a leather jacket and ultra-skinny jeans.
“I realized that the onus would really be on costume and hair to help guide the audience through this visual growth of this 19-year-old kid to a 24-year-old man,” says costume designer Arianne Phillips, who previously earned Oscar nominations for her work on Mangold’s 2005 Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, as well as Quintin Tarantino’s 2019 mid-century epic Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.
“I was really looking for threads of continuity in Bob’s character and his taste level,” Phillips says, “and one thing I can say for sure in that excavation was denim. Bob has always worn jeans.”
During pre-production, Phillips connected with Paul O’Neill, the design director of Levi’s Vintage Clothing, the brand’s sublabel that recreates and reimagines archival designs.
Back in 2019, O’Neill and his team developed a capsule collection based on the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 1960s called “Folk City,” and he’d already done a good deal of research into the wardrobes of Dylan, Karen Dalton, and Joan Baez (who also features in A Complete Unknown, as portrayed by Monica Barbaro).
youtube
While reading A Freewheelin’ Time—a memoir by Dylan’s then-girlfriend Suze Rotolo, a version of whom appears in the film as Elle Fanning’s Sylvie Russo—O’Neill uncovered a great sartorial tidbit:
Tumblr media
In the mid-1960s, Rotolo used to sew inverted-U-shaped panels into the inseams of Dylan’s 501s, widening the hems so that he could more easily wear the pants over boots. In other words, Rotolo was DIY-ing bootcut jeans years before Levi’s started manufacturing them in 1969.
“I can remember me and my colleague high-fiving each other when we found that out,” says O’Neill.
“Arianne said they had Dylan experts consulting on the film, and none of them had even heard about this before or seen it.”
Bob Dylan in 1964.
It was a lucky nugget for the costume team, one that not only explains one of the musician’s style idiosyncrasies but also adds narrative depth to Dylan and Rotolo’s dynamic.
Tumblr media
(The real-life Rotolo also appeared on the cover of Dylan’s 1963 album, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan; for that photoshoot, Dylan himself wore a pair of 501s.)
Once O’Neill and Phillips discovered the detail about Dylan’s custom flares, they started noticing them everywhere—including on the album artwork for his fourth LP, Another Side of Bob Dylan.
To commemorate A Complete Unknown and its costumes, Levi’s Vintage Clothing produced a capsule collection featuring a reproduction of Dylan’s customized XX 501s complete with hand-sewn bootcut inserts and a D-ring leather belt, as well as toffee-hued suede work jacket based on a jacket Dylan wore during the era.
The full assortment will hit the brand’s website on December 20.
In A Complete Unknown, Dylan’s classic denim also contrasts with Baez’s trendier silhouettes, which often included Levi’s with a white or black logo tab on the back pocket, which the company produced in the early 1960s to denote hipper styles geared towards young people.
In this case, that meant more denim storytelling: Dylan, like his customized jeans, was sly and rugged; Baez, fresh and forward-thinking.
But by the mid ’60s, the folk scene—and with it, Dylan’s tastes in music, clothing, and otherwise—was in metamorphosis.
And the jeans, they were a-changin’.
Phillips gleaned that after Dylan had toured England in spring 1965, he “clearly had come back with his Cuban-heeled boots, his skinny jeans, his military peacoat, that whole look. He was a big fan of the Beatles, and he met the Beatles and he was hanging out with Donovan [Phillips Leitch],” she says.
“It was Carnaby Street mod time, and he definitely brought that look back.”
The costume designer consulted with O’Neill to identify the super-skinny jeans that Dylan wore during his historic Newport performance that summer.
In 1965—the same year Bob went electric—Levi’s introduced the Super Slims, which O’Neill says “were basically the skinniest jeans you could make without using stretch fabric.”
youtube
He sourced fabric produced at a defunct mill in North Carolina to recreate a pair for the scene.
Though there was no photographic evidence to verify for certain that Dylan wore Super Slims that night at Newport, for the film, they fit the bill.
But Dylan’s trailblazing Newport ’65 performance held another fashion mystery.
Per photos from the era, Dylan wore an uncharacteristically loud mint-green, polka-dotted blouse during a soundcheck for his electric set;
he later wore the same shirt on the cover of one of his 1966 EPs.
When Phillips first showed images of the shirt to Mangold, she recalls, “Jim wasn’t so sold on it.”
But Chalamet himself had a vision for how the shirt might make sense in the movie.
(Hint: Chalamet’s Dylan wears it in a scene opposite Boyd Holbrook’s Johnny Cash, a character whom Phillips—having costumed Walk the Line—relished the chance to revisit “in a totally different film and with a different actor.”)
“Timmy loved that shirt and I loved the shirt, too,” says Phillips.
“It really seeds what we know Bob goes on to in ’65, where his style really explodes.”
Over the course of the film, as O’Neill puts it, we see Dylan morph “from this rough-and-ready traveling character into this peacock with the big hair and the shades and the skinny jeans and the polka dot shirt.”
Even so, the blue jeans provided a through-line.
“Denim is so beautiful because it’s the signature of a youth culture movement [and] when we think about today, we take it for granted,” says Phillips.
“I’ve done a lot of mid-century films, but denim, there are so many dress codes [where] you couldn’t wear denim in the workplace, you couldn’t wear it to school, you couldn’t wear it to church. It was really relegated to the blue-collar workers [or] how we dressed on the weekends until it became a signature of the youth movement in the Sixties. And that really, that rebellion—I mean, that was punk rock before punk rock, right?”
Movies If Bob Dylan didn’t exist, “A Complete Unknown” would be an absorbing if conventional drama about a fictional folk singer with that name who, in the nineteen-sixties, shows up in New York and turns himself into a rock star at a time when the concept was novel.
But, given the complex ubiquity of Dylan’s music and life story, the movie’s synthetic simplicity is bewildering.
The director, James Mangold (who wrote the script with Jay Cocks), emphasizes the protagonist’s own sense of self-invention, and offers a bland and smooth official portrait—which nonetheless remains fascinating.
Timothée Chalamet stars, delivering an impressive yet emotionally muffled impersonation of Dylan; the rest of the cast—principally, Edward Norton, as Pete Seeger; Monica Barbaro, as Joan Baez; and Elle Fanning, as the pseudonymous Sylvie Russo—push vigorously against the narrow limits of their roles.
