     helen commands every room she enters. she makes heads turn, makes people pause their conversations to look. dale, being with her, has eyes on him too. prying eyes. he knows whatever they say of him, he’d rather not hear. what they see is someone unremarkable, wearing an ill-fitted suit at a party he would never be invited to if not for the glamour of miss helen norville. she looks at him like it is of no importance to her what they do say and she has no qualms extending her hand to him in spite of how it looks. they have not danced since that momentous night at geoff’s party.

     dale shakes his head and laughs at her offer like it is the silliest thing in the world. but he does take her hand and steps towards her to plant a swift kiss on her cheek, “i know you think dancing will make me seem more appealing to them, but i can tell you right now, they are going to find me exactly as awkward  and unworthy after as they do now.” he gives her a look that is almost challenging, “you’ll see.” 

     and she will hate being proved wrong, but at least he can soften the blow with a unconvincing attempt at humour. whatever it is she sees in him, he is almost certain won’t translate to the swarm of ancient newspeople around them. especially not by parading him on a dance floor. they will look and he will disappoint. it is how it is, but he will let her shine and have the moment how she wants it.

     gerry joining the news at six team had worked out in a way he never thought it could. while dale questions the necessity of bringing on a comedian as a regular in their program - and charlie tate’s general vision - he does feel the levity he brings. considering how jealous he’s been of him, dale is surprised he’s found friendship there. gerry has all the easy-going charm that he lacks and he is probably drawn to him for the same reason. and he is drawn. 

     curiosity killed the cat, they say. dale is very sure he won’t like what he finds, but curiosity does get the better of him, too, when gerry goes ‘missing’ shortly after the lunch update and he decides to go looking. it isn’t hard to sniff him out either. he hears banging from their dressing room when he’s halfway down the stairs. what he suspects makes him red in the face before he has even reached the door. 

     dale knocks on the door even though he feels embarrassed to do so. “gerry?” he calls, not sure if he should be raising his voice more or if this should be making him more angry than he is. “gerry?” he knocks again, louder, and when he gets no response he decides to open the door. he isn’t surprised at all to find him half-undressed and kissing man up against one of the tables, but it still knocks all the air out of his lungs. he quickly closes the door behind him and awkwardly squints his eyes to stop himself from staring at them.his hand is on the door-handle, he is ready to run.

     “sorry.. sorry… i— gerry, if this is your idea of discreet i worry for you. you should be at your desk.” 

     it is unprofessional, but gerry wouldn’t be the first - but he might just be the most obvious. a wretched sound escapes dale’s lips, something half-laugh and half-cough, “i’d leave you to it, but you should know i could hear you down the hall.” he glares at gerry, avoiding looking at anything other than his face, but it is brief and he is off and out of the door as fast as he can be.

     he keeps walking even when he hears gerry chasing after him. of course he’ll make a show of it. he tries to ignore him, but he can’t when gerry suddenly gets a hold on his wrist. “i am not ratting you out,” he says without turning, “so don’t worry.”
