Title: Cotillion Chaos

Summary:

The rest of the morning makes little sense as her mother tries to explain that the families have struck a deal in which Blair in her good fortune and generosity will train with Dan for the Cotillion.

"Why not have Serena do this with him? He's going to be her escort."

"Serena hasn't agreed to go yet and her grandma wants to surprise her with this development."

Typical. Blair's hard work becomes Serena's magic.

Over time, Blair begins to realize that she hasn't changed much. That she didn't have to.

Her look on some things certainly have, but it doesn't change who she is. Because it didn't have to. 

She takes it with a grain of salt now if she hears that someone is "a new person." Throw some enate cynicism in there because no, maybe the windshield wipers finally worked and your vision of the road is clearer now. She can believe that. 

In the past, his 'I love you's showed themselves like desperation, a last resource when all other excuses ran out; it was always grand, a moment in time where the twisted boy finally gives in. But he never gave in, Blair realizes that now. 

Declarations that demanded an immediate response, more to soothe one's ego than anything else. A leash always followed along, squeezing her neck; it came in all shapes and sizes - diamonds, lingeries, a step behind his shoulder when business was being conducted. Never by his side. 

She always had to convince herself that this was the destiny she was deserving of; anything else was just simply not attainable. Too many reminders from all sides to ever let her believe otherwise. 

"We're the same." She was told. 

She was told.

Never once she thought to ask "Are we?"

Now she knows that three words, eight letters carries no more weight than just what they are: words. The lack of meaning behind it shadowed and swallowed by the need of something to hold on to. 

It makes her laugh now; lines on a script that would be deemed awful even for soap operas. Lyrics of a song she never wanted to sing. Once he said to her "Fairy tales don't suit you." It took her a long time to realize that it didn't suit anyone, because they were never real to begin with.

Blair didn't change; instead, she fought. For herself, for a chance to just be. It took an amount of strength she wasn't aware that was there. She doesn't wonder why because she knows why. 

It's funny how things are; in the process of finding herself, she found him. His presence had never been ignored before - too infuriating, too lonely not to notice. 

Perhaps she was looking at a mirror that reflected different images, but still a mirror. And then the mirror cleared, and Blair enjoyed what was looking back at her (as much as she would like to try to deny it).

His 'I love you's are never grand, and they don't have to be. And it didn't need to be worded every time to make it real.

He said "I love you" when his hand would gently touch the small of her back at an exhibit so she could have a better look at a particular painting, or when he would bring her breakfast in bed, hair looking like a bird's nest and he would just laugh at her incessant whining for him to cut it.

When she looks back, he was saying "I love you" way before she was even ready to listen. When she lodged on his couch, pouring out frustrations that were not even his to take on. On the same couch, where they would watch 'The Philadelphia Story' on a small laptop screen, eat pizza and she felt like she could breathe again. 

She doesn't have to earn his 'I love you's; they simply exist because she exists - and that's enough.

this is not directed at anything specific, but if you’re a fanfic reader, I encourage you to cast a wide net when reading and don’t just stick to very specific and narrow stories. the best glee fic I ever read centered two characters/two ships I don’t even like. you’re missing out on so many great stories if you never leave your comfort zone

I love how you're the biggest Zoyet shipper. I didn't watch the Gossip Girl reboot, but the potential these two had. I started reading all the fanfics. They could have been the sapphic Dair. I need Savannah and Whitney in another project together now.

they got me locked in for life it’s so bad! Love them so much but I can not take that title there are about six of us making content to this day. it’s been running in my head for a whileeee. i really do want to write ever since i wrote a dair cheaters oneshot but yeah i have lots of ideas and i do want to write it

Is there a Dair fic that's like an alternate universe set in Penn's show You? I feel like that should exist, but I don't know how to look for it.

You can always search the usual fanfic sites and include You in the tags/filters. Maybe there's someone around who has read one like that or written it and can link you to it.

what’s the nichest gg fanfic idea you have (regardless of whether you actually intend to write it)?

ohhh oomph well, I may have to dig deep into my brain to accurately answer...

perhaps my orchestra au? but I have in fact written that. I did have this idea when I was making those mt playlists about the core four all being theatre majors but I don't have the spoons to write that. But have a few disjointed ideas: dan & nate & serena are housemates. dan and serena are in a summer stock prod of rent together (playing roger and maureen respectively); blair and dan get thrown in to costarring in Bridges of Madison County in the senior fall semester, and blair was counting on playing opposite nate, but he booked MC in cabaret at a local playhouse and was Unavailable. Showmance ensues. they fuck at the cast party.....also nate is gay. serenessa happens......serena and dan are the exes to best friends they deserved to be & do the last five years for nelly yuki's capstone directing project......i guess it's niche bc i'm the only person i know on the internet that cares about bridges of madison county the musical but it's GORGEOUS. and i already did write the last five years au. so.

I mean, I also have au ideas for ships other than dair -- there's a couple natessa aus I have in the works right now (the greys anatomy series has actually been really helpful in feeling out how to write them together so that's been good) i just know from experience that the fics i write that don't feature dair get considerably less eyes than the dair fics (we browse by ship tags, i get it!) but that does kinda get me to put niche ideas into two different categories. there's a niche idea w/ dair, and then ideas without dair that are niche by virtue of not being dair. does that make sense?

i did have a Thot for a serena x carter x dan thing over the weekend....
