Ironically, this normally beautiful and peaceful little country town is known for car racing. Every year, the famous Liqui - Moly 12 Hour car race takes place on Mount Panorama and this usually quiet town suddenly becomes as crowded as Sydney. Of Course, car racing isn’t Bathurst’s only claim to fame, Bathurst has a long rich history with gold mining, the first gold ever discovered in Australia was discovered in Bathurst, the gold rush which took place between the 1850′s and the 1870′s transformed this small provincial town into a major regional centre.
GETTING THERE AND AWAY
AIR Bathurst has a small regional airport. Pelican Airlines do daily direct flights from Sydney to Bathurst, however this is the most expensive way to travel to Bathurst from Sydney. Pelican Airlines Operates direct flight Between Sydney Airport Terminal T2 and Bathurst with two return flights per day Monday To Friday and 1 return flight on Sunday.
CAR Car is the easiest and most convenient way to get to and from Bathurst.

ABERCROMBIE HOUSE This heritage treasure which doubles a private home for the Morgan family is open to the public to explore and provides guided tours. Opportunities for people to connect have been limited since work, school, holidays, and all other usual activities ground to a halt over the past year. Little did we realise that walking down the street, exercising, shopping, or going out to eat (even if alone) involved so many chance interactions with others that benefited our mental health and overall well-being.
For many of us, a severely limited roster of activities has also involved masking up, restricting our usual smiles and chats with friends, neighbours, and acquaintances.
In this new world we are facing, the value and opportunity retail and town centre developments contribute to a wide cross-section of our community to interact, many times a week (and even daily, such as at a regular coffee spot) becomes abundantly clear.
Hames Sharley’s design process for centres and precincts focuses on responding firstly to local and the broader context, socially and physically. We then layer the considerations of maximising the built form potential with what the customer base needs and wants, together with owner/operator aspirations. This approach involves inputs, iterations and design reviews with professionals across our research and analysis, planning, interior design and architecture portfolios. We work nationally to address challenges and devise solutions for our clients. For example, Director Harold Perks in Hames Sharley’s Melbourne studio, collaborates with Strategic Research Planner Rebecca Spencer in Perth within the practice’s Retail and Town Centres Portfolio.
With Hames Sharley’s multi-decade retail design pedigree on a broad spectrum of centres – new and redeveloping – from local to super-regional, it would be easy to lose sight of what creates successful outcomes. But for the team, it begins simply by being passionate and personable.

Keeping it local
An empty calendar, not a single commitment or activity on the horizon, nothing to juggle and squash into an already busy week – this is a COVID lockdown induced feeling that we have all experienced in the past year. And for many of us, led to a re-organisation and evaluation of our post-pandemic lives. Both social and work patterns altered greatly, with recently released ABS statistics highlighting the large and sustained swing towards working from home. In February 2021, two fifths (41%) of people were working from home at least once a week, while in contrast less than a quarter of us (24%) were doing so, pre-COVID.
This means increased localism with patronage of centres and facilities closer to home now more intensive and frequent, contrasting to our previous dependence on CBD shopping or regional centres, visited in lunch breaks or on our commute. This shift in the importance and greater utilisation of neighbourhood centres may be tempered by a tendency to return to our habit of rushing around from place to place, over-booking ourselves and leaving little time to enjoy local places with the people we know and love.

Hames Sharley’s process of highlighting and showcasing the competitive advantages of each site we reimagine or create begins with a thorough investigation. The Urban Development and Retail portfolios undertake in-depth investigations and analysis to fundamentally understand client objectives, drivers and performance indicators.

The appeal of The Mezz to its inhabitants and visitors is centred on a strong food culture, an honest use and adaption of the built fabric, a strong community focus and creative spirit.

Outrage as sprinklers water lawns in Melbourne’s Queen Victoria gardens despite the city being battered with flash flooding
Commuters were left shocked this morning when they noticed the sprinklers in one of Melbourne’s biggest parks had been turned on despite the city experiencing 17mm of rain fall over night. The grass in Queen Victoria gardens had soaked up an historic down pour over night but the parks sprinkler system still showed up for work the next morning, giving the gardens an extra soaking.

A spokesperson for the The City of Melbourne told Daily Mail Australia that the sprinklers turned on due to a malfunction.
‘The City of Melbourne carries out irrigation audits, including turning on sprinkler systems, throughout winter. This ensures the irrigation systems are working efficiently and do not lay dormant prior to the peak watering season,’ they said.
‘The electronically controlled sprinkler system at Queen Victoria Gardens was turned on this morning due to a system malfunction.’
‘As a result of the malfunction this sprinkler station was activated at 7:20am. The water ran for approximately 16 minutes before being shut off.’
‘The City of Melbourne is dedicated to reducing water consumption across the municipality, since 2014 we’ve irrigated our parks and gardens using up to 25 per cent non-potable, alternative water sources including rainwater and stormwater.’

1. Download PTV apps and Buy Myki
PTV is available in Apps Store and Android Play Store. It gives you information about the tram timetable which helps you to plan your journey. Although, you can also find this information with Google Maps. Both applications are reliable in Melbourne. To use the PTV, you will also need Myki card. You can buy myki card in convenient stores (7eleven, Ezy store), any train stations, or on board a bus (but I don’t recommend this because not all buses have myki card available). The card costs $6 and you can to up your card in the convenient stores, train stations, on board a bus (route 401 and 601 do not sell or top up myki), or any Myki machines in selected PTV stops. Please remember to touch on when you start your trip and touch off after finishing one. The daily fare for Metropolitan will cost you $8.20 and failure to produce a valid ticket (incl. failure to touch on/off), exc. free tram zone, will cost you $238! See myki .

2. Be aware of the speed limit

3. The roundabouts

Third, please be polite when asking for the waiter/waitress: do not yell, do not clap, do not wave nor snapping pleaseeee!). Tipping is not mandatory but don’t forget to say thank you for service. 2. When shopping 1. Hi, How are You? Unlike in Indonesia, it is common for shop assistant or cashier to greet you with "how are you?” which might be weird for us to hear that from a stranger. You just need to answer in nicely with “Good, thanks. And you?”. In the end, they will wish you a great day, too. No, they are not hitting on you! They are just doing their job! 2. Cash or Card? Shopping with card is convenient in Melbourne. Although, it’s always good to have cash on hand because not every store accepts card and sometimes there is a surcharge for paying with card. 3. Shops close at 5 PM Yes, most shops are closing at 5 PM, some grocery stores (Coles, Woolworths, Aldi) close at 8 PM, some until midnight (especially in CBD areas). Meanwhile, marketplaces (Queen Victoria Market, South Melbourne Market, Prahran Market) don’t open every day. Check their website for opening hours and day.

How far would you go to find a first home?
Domain’s First Home Buyer’s Report has been billed as “uncovering the suburbs across Australia that are most affordable to entry-level buyers”.
But the list includes some locations more than 100 kilometres from the CBD.

The New South Wales Central Coast city of Gosford is listed as the most affordable suburb to buy a house in greater Sydney.
Further north Mannering Park and Chain Valley Bay are listed as greater Sydney’s fifth and sixth most affordable suburbs for houses; both are more than 100 kilometres on the road from the CBD.
Millgrove, named as the most affordable suburb for houses in greater Melbourne, is a small timber milling town more than a 90-minute commute from the city centre.
Other states fare better though, with their capital cities’ most affordable suburbs all within 40 kilometres of the CBD.
Define affordable
Domain’s chief data scientist Dr Nicola Powell said housing affordability was a hot topic that had attracted negative media coverage unhelpful to first home buyers.
“The main aim of this report is to say, ‘look, there are options and there are suburbs which fall within the first home buyer’s budget’,” she said.
Using data for the year to March 2017 the report identified suburbs with a median sale price that was below the average loan amount for that state plus a 20 per cent deposit and first home buyer’s grant.
Dr Powell said price was just one consideration for first home buyers, with other factors such as location and the school catchment area also coming into play.
“Some home buyers may not want to be living that far away from the CBD.”
She said the lists of affordable suburbs for Melbourne and Sydney unit buyers included many suburbs with shorter commuting times for city workers, such as Albion and Wiley Park.
Where does Melbourne end?
To draw a boundary for each city the report used Bureau of Statistics greater capital city statistical areas.
In Melbourne, that area stretches from Bacchus Marsh in the west to Warburton in the east.

Millgrove is a five-minute drive from Warburton, which also makes the Domain list.
Commuting from Millgrove to the CBD would take more than an hour-and-a-half by car or nearly two hours by public transport.
Lily Li from the Millgrove Licensed Grocer said she did not know of many locals who commuted daily to Melbourne.
“It’s very far,” she said.
More people commuting from Central Coast
By contrast, many people commute from the NSW Central Coast to Sydney for work.

Of the top 20 places named in the list of affordable suburbs in greater Sydney, 17 are on the Central Coast.
The Central Coast Council said many people were moving to the area because of its affordability and proximity to Sydney.
Firefighter Rob Darnley commutes twice every eight days from Kincumber, south-east of Gosford, to Hornsby in northern Sydney for a 24-hour shift.
“I find the commute home quite difficult because I’m really fatigued … sometimes I need to rest in Sydney before I come home if I haven’t had any sleep at all.”
He said he knew a number of people who commuted to Sydney from the Central Coast but that many only went into the city two or three days a week.
“If you were doing office hours Monday to Friday it would be really hard.”
