aso-kuju national park, kumamoto & oita
november 4-6, 2022
i’ve been to aso-kuju before (see this post about it!) but i hadn’t been into the kuju mountain range before, so i decided to go back in autumn so i could experience the mountains with the trees in fall colors.
i’ve said this before but aso-kuju is my favorite place in all of japan, and this trip really just reminded me how beautiful it is and how beautiful volcanoes and volcanic areas make our planet!
first we went to daikanbo, which is an outlook on the rim of the aso caldera, which is massive. then we drove through the kuju mountains and into an area called chojabaru, where there are wetland and forest trails. we hiked a 2km forest trail to get up close and personal with the leaves. then we went to a really good restaurant called yasaiya (vegetable restaurant). it’s basically farm to table. they had amazing borscht there for some reason! then we hit up drum tao, a famous taiko group whose headquarters are in the kuju mountains. after the pandemic they couldn’t do any world tours, so they built this nature stage at the edge of the mountains overlooking aso volcano and they perform there live. that was really cool, but oh lord it was terrifying to look at them lol. then i was taken to some natural springs! ikeyama and yamabuki are both really pretty spots with warm water bubbling up from underground. apparently they stay green all year round because of the water temperature.
it was a really great day with my geoguide. i’m going back to kurokawa onsen in january and then doing one more tour with my geoguide in spring before i leave japan.

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route The ‘Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route’ (‘立山黒部アルペンルート’, ‘Tateyama Kurobe Alpen Route’) is a unique and spectacular route through the ‘Northern Japan Alps’ which is traversed by various means of transportation including cablecars, trolley buses and a ropeway. Completed in 1971, the route connects Toyama City in Toyama Prefecture with Omachi Town in Nagano Prefecture. The section between Tateyama Station and Ogizawa is closed to private vehicles. It is completely inaccessible from December to mid April. The main attraction of the ‘Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route’ is the magnificent scenery of the ‘Tateyama Mountain Range’, part of the ‘Chubu Sangaku National Park’. Visitors can enjoy varying vistas during different seasons of the year. In spring, accumulated snow, especially around the upper sections of Midagahara and Murodo form a majestic snow corridor whose snow walls reach up to 20 meters high. A section of the snow corridor around Murodo is open to pedestrians usually from mid April to late June. Summer and autumn attract visitors with beautiful landscapes, alpine flowers (especially around June through August) and autumn leaves. The fall colours typically reach their best around Murodo and Daikanbo from late September to early October - they gradually descend the mountain slopes, arriving at the lower elevations from late October to early November. The full route is open from around April 15 to November 30, closing for winter during the remainder of the year (exact dates may vary slightly). The peak period to visit the snow corridor lasts from the opening in April to early June. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #design #words #pictures #japansnorthernalps #murodosnowcorridor #roofofjapan #jigokudani #thevalleyofhell #mounttsurugi #kurobedam #toyamaprefecture #naganoprefecture #tateyamakurobealpineroute (at Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRYZzCMlPZA/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Alpine route - into the mountains
July 15th 2019
Having investigated the sights Matsumoto had to offer, Rob was increasingly irritated that his mountain climbing plans were in tatters. After some hotel based research I found that we were actually pretty close to the start of the Alpine route. The weather was looking more promising for Monday and most importantly there was a mountain we could climb!
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine route is roughly 90km stretching from Ogizawa to Toyama. It takes in a range of scenery using seven different modes of transportation. We stayed overnight near the beginning of the route and were dropped off at about 7.30am to start.
It was wet with low cloud to begin the route. A bus was the first mode of transport and initially we found mist had invaded the tunnel going through the mountain. The tunnel was only one vehicle wide so there is a passing place in the middle of the mountain.
Tumblr media
We emerged the otherside of the mountain to a beautiful sunny blue sky.  We were surrounded by the peaks of the mountains and could hear the thundering of the water from Kurobe Dam. We crossed the dam enjoying the rainbows and glorious views.
Tumblr media
The next part is the funicular which travels up inside another mountain. Rob made sure to get a prime position on this one and got some very cool photos.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The funicular travelled from 1455m to 1828m Kurobedaira. At Kurobedaira a cable car travelled up the side of the mountain to Daikanbo.
Tumblr media
By 10 am we had reached Murodo. The weather wasn’t too bad so we decided to follow a relatively popular path just to get a little hike in. I was a little hesitant as there was snow but there were lots of people walking up, quite a few a lot less prepared than us.
Tumblr media
We walked across a few snow fields along the well maintained path and spotted a mountain hut that we decided to climb to. Once at this point it was a loose shale slope up to the top of the mountain. After some consideration we dumped our big bags at the mountain hut and continued to the top with water and a snack.
Tumblr media
Tateyama is 3015m and is one of Japan’s 3 holy mountains- Mount Fuji and Mount Haku are the others in the trilogy. At the top of the Oyama peak is Oyama shrine here you can get blessed for a fee. We contented ourselves with a pot noodle and a coke from the refreshment hut.
Tumblr media
The return journey was easier but the mist did descend pretty swiftly towards the end.
Tumblr media
The snowfield was tricky to navigate - it was very slippery.
Tumblr media
I used various techniques - the sitting on your bum and sliding down worked the best!
We then took a bus then a funicular down to Tateyama station.
Tumblr media
Rob enjoyed the view out of the window. The mist was settling in over the mountains- a white blanket essentially ending the sight seeing for the day.
A rickety train took us from Tateyama station to Toyama where we spent the night. Toyama has a castle, but the main reason for staying is that it has great transport links back to Nagoya.
The Alpine route offers hiking a range of transport and interesting scenery. It is a main tourist thoroughfare but worth battling the crowds.
