Me reading fanfics with Daenerys in them: "She would NOT fucking say that."

What if Jon's sweetness in the bittersweet ending is his short lived love with Daenerys?
While I do think the show is probably accurate to what we'll get in the books in the broadest of strokes, there are still a lot of other plotlines to get through before Jon and Dany can even meet. For how long his books are, grrm really doesn't cover all that much time, meaning in just two books, Jon has to be resurrected (which I suspect won't happen until around the halfway point in Winds, since there's no point in Jon dying and coming back just a few chapters later), Sansa has to make it to the Wall, Arya has to return from Braavos and confront Lady Stoneheart, Littlefinger has to be taken care of, Jon and Sansa have to retake Winterfell, and the Starks have to reunite all amidst the growing threat of the whitewalkers. On Dany's side, Aegon has to get to King's Landing, Dany has to become leader of the Dothraki, fulfill all the bits of her prophecy (the 'to go West you must go East' one), and rally her armies to cross the narrow sea, and resolve ALL the loose ends in Essos since whence Dany leaves, that will be the last time we see it. And that's not including all the other stories, like the Dorne plot, Cersei/Jaime/Brienne, and Stannis/Davos/Melisandre, or accounting for the characters still very separate from everything (Sam off in Oldtown and Bran doing three eyed raven stuff). And all this is build up for the final cataclysmic conflict, the song of ice and fire. Now, that is a lot of content to get through, and when you start laying out every single thing that needs to be resolved, it becomes rather apparent why WoW is taking so long. The point is, Jon and Dany are not meeting in Winds, and it would be a miracle for them to meet even in the first half of Dream of Spring. That's why I highly doubt the relationship between Jon and Dany will be a genuine romantic one. Grrm is not the type to do a quick, star-crossed lovers plotline that ends tragically all within the span of a few hundred pages. A Jon x Sansa romance makes more sense, seeing as, if we accept Sansa as the girl in grey, she and Jon will spend the majority of two books with each other.
As for the show, there was nothing bittersweet in Jon having to kill his lover after she becomes a tyrant and threatens to murder his sisters, and for him to end the series by leaving his family for a lifetime of solitude. If book!Jon is destined to go beyond the wall after DoS, the 'sweetness' will be in knowing he did everything in his power to protect his family. No short-term love affair with Dany could ever replace the love Jon holds for the Starks.
Book wise, I doubt the Jon x Dany relationship will be one of genuine romantic love on Jon's part (see pol!Jon theory), and while Jon could end his story alone, I don't think a relationship with Dany is enough to fulfill a 'bittersweet' ending. I also recommend this incredible meta on Jon's ending (it does skew heavily Jonsa-centric) FedonCiadale — Sometimes scrolling through the Jonsa tag, I find... (tumblr.com) and they also have some other amazing answers on the bittersweet ending.

It’s so embarrassing for Daenerys’ haters that the only Hugo Award GRRM has won for ASOIAF is for his Daenerys centric novellas. The Starks have 6 POV characters and 162 chapters, and yet “the heart of the story” couldn’t win GRRM what Daenerys has. Same for the Lannisters (3 POV characters, 78 chapters) and the Greyjoys (4 POV characters, 26 chapters).
Tee hee. I imagine that Dany's chapters supplied that wonder, heart, tragedy, etc. as well as thrills that other chapters don't have as much. It must be so embarrassing to not see which character pays in GRRM's bills and keep his beard clean.
A lot of people might counter with Dany being the only Targ left and needing the "extra" stuff about her family bc they're all dead, whereas the others' families continue to actively move the narrative forward. Honey, Dany's chapters has some of the most poignant and intense political intrigue of the entire series! Magical, too,, and the magic adds/shapes the story alongside Bran's. In political intrigue, only the Lannisters and Ironborn Greyjoys really are coming close to Dany.
Or that Dany's family were the ruling family and that it'd only make sense to write thema all up bc if you do, you inevitably explain the rest of Westeros...um, we still only got details about non Targ houses when they were connected to Targs intimately! And all really to center her!
Whatever, Dany herself is defined by her intuitive beauty. Haters can die mad.

If TG wanna hate Targaryens and Daenerys, fine! Just stay consistent in your hatred. Stop stanning the Greens, they’re Targaryens and never once refer to themselves as Hightowers. Stop comparing your favs to Targaryens. Say goodbye to “my ship is just like Jaehaerys and Alysanne or Aemon and Naerys” and “my faves are like Aegon, Rhaenys and Visenya.” Stop wanting your faves to have dragons, I thought they’re weapons of mass destruction and nuclear bombs ? Stop giving them elements of Daenerys’ storyline, her quotes, titles and traits. No more “I’m no ordinary woman, my dreams come true” for Helaena, no “mother of dragons” titles for Alicent and Elia, no more “my fave will ride one of Daenerys’ dragons!” Stop stanning House Tully, Baratheon and Tyrell, they owe their relevance to Aegon the Colonizer, they are literally collaborators with a colonial government per your own arguments! Stop wanting Jon to be the son of Rhaegar, he was a colonizer who cheated on his Italianx wife, stop basing your arguments on Jon being Azor Ahai on the basis of being Rhaegar’s son, stop fantasizing about him riding a dragon or wielding Dark Sister. Stop wanting your favs to sit on the Iron Throne, that’s a Targaryen creation, and by the way they should not rule the Seven Kingdom’s either, this state was created by House Targaryen, let Westeros decolonize and go back to being seven backwards regions going to war under the smallest pretext! Stop stanning Young Griff, he’s a Targaryen and canonically doesn’t mention his Martell mother. Stop whining about the deaths of Jaehaera and Helaena, they’re Targaryens, shouldn’t you be happy that there’s two less ? Stop watching HOTD and don’t watch any future Targaryen centric prequels. Stop shipping Rhaenicent, one part of this ship is literally someone you consider a nazi colonizer whose ancestors genocided Westerosi, why would you want her anywhere near your pure Andal favorite ?
The truth is that the Targaryens are the coolest house in ASoIaF with some of the best characters and Targ antis know it.

book!Tyrion and book!Daenerys are my favourite characters. I have been looking forward to them meeting since the first time I picked up A Game of Thrones, so when the promo pictures of them meeting in season five came out I was beyond excited.
For a while that continued, even though for whatever reason they started dumbing down Tyrion. Their chemistry was remarkable and it felt like their story could be the backbone of the remainder of the show.
It sorta was but not in a good way.
Tyrion was pushed to the background in favour of the least interesting Northerner alive, Jon Snow, and eventually Rhaegar's bastard started cannibalizing Daenerys too.
The worst thing is that while I did not love book!Jon, I did quite like him. However, his show!version has made me hope Dany and Jon never meet, or that he stays dead.
I know there is a chance that George never finishes the book series because the man is getting up there in years, but I hope to at least read of Tyrion and Dany meeting.
The show broke me, and it seems like House of the Dragon is on its way to doing the same. Great characters are butchered in favour of villains and book!canon is pushed aside.
It's still in the early stages but anyone interested in a Tyion-centric post-season eight/seven-year time jump story, come have a look at my Patreon: patreon.com/DestroyerofNations. The story is called amidst salt and smoke, and it is Tyrion coming to terms with his faults and his hand in Daenerys' death. There are going to be many twists and turns along the way, and there are some surprising and not-so-surprising villains. I am going to post the first chapter on AO3 next week as well.

As a House Martell stan, it's been interesting to watch the evolution of that particular corner of the ASOIAF fandom over the years. For a while, because they were less present on the show (and their actual focus on the show was pretty bungled), they were mostly the favorites of superfans who'd read the books and therefore were deeply devoted to the whole ASOIAF universe, and given how much that means memorizing various types of Targaryen incest over the years, were almost never antis. A lot of people were also drawn to that they were the ~sexy, liberated house, as well as there being a fair number of POC who identified with some of the few non-white people in those books who were actually fully-realized characters (in the books, not so much in the show). IME it was usually people who were also shipping a lot of the other popular "problematic" ships in the fandom like Jaime/Cersei and Sansa/Petyr Baelish.
Then, at some point - particularly after the show ended and the fandom shrunk a lot - it got infected with a bunch of people writing long essays about how Daenerys and the entire Targaryen family were inherently "white supremacist" (previously, it had been more common for POC and other fans who focused on anti-racism to stan Daenerys, and point out that what the final season did with her was some white bullshit that tried to conflate killing oppressors like slavers with killing poor downtrodden people) and there ended up being a fandom fight between those people who saw the Targaryens as the more racist house or the Starks, but they all stanned Martells but in a very shallow sort of way just because they were the POC house. It's also worth nothing that Dorne has equal primogeniture - women can inherit, and in the books it's Doran's eldest daughter, Arianne, who is his heir, even though he has two younger sons - and it also is more accepting of LGBTQ+ people and bastards and general "sex outside of marriage" than most of the rest of Westeros, so it attracts a lot of people who are into them for that reason. I mean, I like them for that reason among others, but of course that's going to be a magnet to people who want to prove that they're extra special progressive for stanning them over like, the Lannisters.
Also, probably worth noting, the people in the second group were generally younger. Book-centric fans generally tend to be older IME in ASOIAF fandom. I feel like whenever a fandom is younger, there's more likely to be more anti behavior.
Anyway it was very weird to get back into ASOIAF when I read Fire and Blood and then when House of the Dragon started airing, and feeling like "my corner" of the fandom had become completely unrecognizable in my absence.
Also, I suspect it's probably drawing in some people who just really like Pedro Pascal. (It was better when it was drawing in the Alexander Siddig stans from DS9 fandom, snerk. Although even that fandom has had an obnoxious influx of younger purity-policing virtue-signalling types discovering it these days, writing stupid discourse about how Garak/Garashir is problematic and people should instead ship characters who don't like each other that much and don't interact much one-on-one because the combinations of them are more progressive or something.... sigh! Anyway, probably not helped by the fact that Game of Thrones completely wasted him, even though his character was one of the best ones in the books and a big one that drew me into loving House Martell. He would've been great as book!Doran, but alas....)
I'm also going to say that as others have pointed out, I'll always be mystified by the fact that ASOIAF even HAS antis. If you're that opposed to incest, age-disparate relationships, violence, etc. anything controversial, how can you stan the actual canon of that show? Or the books, which arguably have even more rape and incest and ephebephilia going on. It just seems like you'd have to have a very adversarial relationship with canon to a point that I just don't understand why you don't pick another fandom. Of course, it's probably really just that antis are hypocrites.
--
Hypocrites, yes. But also drawn to material that they're not comfortable being drawn to. The younger they are, the more the cognitive dissonance makes them act out.
I don't condone it, but I do understand it.

He said that you would most likely be in need of them." Sam answers with a shrug. Jon stared at Sam with a frown painted on this face. What could Maester Aemon possibly wanted to give him? Jonsa, Gendrya, Braime, RhaeEliaLya, Anti-Dany
Lost Girl By prussianblues
She leaves the Seven Kingdoms a bastard and returns a queen.
Or, Joanna Snow is in King’s Landing when Cersei seizes the city, and Varys sneaks her out to meet her brother. A meddling Magister later, she meets Daenerys as well.
A story told in drabbles.
To Go Forward By togo
Jon Snow wakes up in Winterfell, two years in the past. He struggles with his knowledge of the upcoming wars, the mystery of his mother's forgotten letters, and the prophecy of the Prince That Was Promised. How much time does he have until the Others invade Westeros?
A Second Time Around By ratclanqueen
"I know this is hard for you to understand but we have already lived this life once. The Gods are blessing us. I saw this before the Night King broke through the Wall. We have been reborn into our bodies before Jon Arryn's murder with our memories and knowledge of what could possibly lie ahead," Bran told them.
When all of House Stark wake up one morning with their deaths being their clearest memories, the wheel begins to turn. The game has a new player in the form of Sansa Stark, the Red Wolf of Winterfell and the Queen in the North before her death, who is determined to see her family grow old and happy in Winterfell and the Iron Throne melted to a puddle of metal at her feet.
Dragons of Red, Dragons of White By NightDrake
After the Duel on the Trident, there are ramifications that none could foresee. In the world built afterwards, dragons once again rule and roam Westeros, among them the son of a northern beauty and the king. Prince Jon and his kin, Stark and Targaryen alike, face new challenges from both without and within. Whatever the future holds, the Seven Kingdoms will learn that, whether in a coat of red or a coat of white, a dragon still has claws.
Manners and Misunderstandings By mostlyclouds
The Stark sisters have travelled all the way to London to begin their first season, leaving behind the familiar world of Winterfell Hall and a disappointed Jon Stark- with whom the eldest Miss Stark has been convinced to break off a connection. In London they join family friends the Baratheons and the fashionable young Tyrells in a world of romance and balls.
Meanwhile Gendry Waters has been plucked out of the life he knew to become his ailing father's heir, Robb, Theon and later Rickon embark on military careers in the Napoleonic wars, and their aunt Lysa makes a foolish marriage.
When tragedy hits the family, they must come together, learning how manners may hide monsters and the best people are often those misunderstood by society.
The Conquest By DolorousEdditor
An AU of grand scale inspired by a prompt by Oblongata.
Three hundred years after Aegon the Conqueror built a new empire on the ashes of the Valyrian Freehold the known world is a place of war. The Targaryen Empire is pressed by enemies, the Seven Kingdoms war amongst themselves and forces contrive to pull them all apart.
Amidst all this are a prince and princess who fear themselves ruined by the horrors they've endured. Together they might be the hope their people are looking for. More importantly, they might be the dream both abandoned long ago.
A Caged Songbird By bikadoo
“I will be a silent, and dutiful wife,” Sansa spits. “I will be their pretty little songbird, and wear their ugly crown, and sit on their painful throne. I shall give him a babe, and my love, and I will wait until he thinks that he has won. And then I shall take his life."
Shae goes still. "You ... you plan to kill the King?"
"No," Sansa says. "I plan to kill my husband."
A Knight's Watch By DolorousEdditor
Jon Snow is forbidden to take the black by his father. Instead he sent to squire for a famous knight, beginning a long arduous journey that causes him to cross paths with characters he never would have. Along the way he learns truths long hidden and discovers love in the most unlikely of places.
All of this in the shadow of the War of Five Kings and the coming of the Others.

I know we aren’t necessarily Sansa’s number one fans around this neck of the woods but I am curious about what her storyline is like in your season eight au! No matter what it’s for sure a massive improvement compared to the bullshit those two dudes churned out.
Although I’m not an avid Sansa Stan— I wanted to give every character a solidly written ending & Sansa is no exception :)
I wanted Sansa’s final arc to be about her reservations of assuming the full role of Lady of Winterfell & processing eveything that has happened to leave her the only one left for the title. She wants to carry on her parents legacy & protect her remaining siblings during the war—but she struggles with feeling like she’s not doing enough & that she isn’t on the battlefield like Jon, Arya & Dany
Pretty much every character has a “moment with Bran” scene where I utilize his 3ER powers to show us relevant flashbacks. Kind of like Bran kidnaps their mind for an immersive psychotherapy session. Super fun.
His moment with Sansa is about her parents & their early days in Winterfell after roberts rebllion. She sees how long & hard her mother tried to get her back before her death & some of what happened to Cersei after Sansa fleed KL.
Her friendship with Theon is very important & they lean on eachother much throughout the war. She’s heavily involved in the Greyjoy centric episodes plot.
Her relationship with Dany is different too— she starts out the same by not trusting or liking anything to do with Dany. She’s not happy her brother fell in love with her cause she thinks it’s clouding his judgment. After the first battle at Winterfell, Sansa sees Dany in action for herself when she helps Sansa evacuate some children from the crypts. Shortly after, when Jon tells Sansa & Arya that Daenerys is pregnant & they are to be married— she’s still skeptical, but agrees with Arya that if Jon truly loves her, they can try to trust him as their brother. Also Jon never tells Sansa or Arya about his true heritage & name (for reasons I can explain in a different post if anyone wants)
Sansa mends Danys wedding dress, and gives it to her casually as a gesture of peace & Dany is touched. They don’t talk or spend as much time together as Arya & Dany inevitably do— but Sansa doesn’t mind making conversation with her at dinners. But near the end of the war, when Dany is too far along to fight in battle, her & Sansa relate to feeling stuck behind & eventually bond over reading silently together to pass the time
Sansa goes with Jon & Arya to Kingslanding for the final siege. She sends a secret letter to Cersei from outside the wall offering to meet & try and negotiate. Because Sansa knows Cersei so well, she believes she has a good chance to convince her to surrender. I won’t tell you what happens from there though because that’s TOO much spoiler :)
Hope this was an answer you were looking for & sorry I typed so much. I love LOVE answering questions about the AU, so if anyone ever wants to send me more I’ll literally type just as much. Thanks for the ask!

so curious to the people who click on a fic tagged with 'Daenerys Targaryen centric' who we know is in Essos, and end up being mad it's focused upon Daenerys and Essos
It's like buying a mince pie and being pissed there's mince it in.

Hello! How are you? I am not sure if this is the right place to send this. But i am new to the fandom and I want to read fanfictions too but i can't find any. I was wondering if you could recommend some fics, more specifically Jon Snow centric if possible. Also i love your blog and the metas andobservations you make. Have a lovely day!
Hello! Thank you for your kind words!
I can recommend you Jon Snow fics but I'm not sure if they will be to your liking since I don't know which relationships (romantic or platonic) of his you prefer.
Dragon's Cradle by @buildoblivionthenwewilltalk AU where Ned survives and has the chance to tell Jon about his true lineage. Ned's point of view as he observes Jon when they meet again a couple of years later. Also, Rodd, Catelyn and Daenerys appear.
when they build you, brother, they broke the mold by janie_tangerine A "What if" story where Robb knows about Jon's true lineage ever since they were kids. Robb's point of view, their brotherhood is on focus. Also, Theon and Catelyn appear.
By the Sword : A Wish in Winter by JR_Castle Jon's adventures in the Night's Watch. It's set during AGOT. Night Watch's & Winterfell characters appear and Tyrion plays an important role.
allies in time of war by @liesmyth Another "what if" story where Jon joins Robb's war campaign and also has to spend more time with Catelyn, too. I guess you have to like both Jon and Catelyn to be interested in this story but it's worth reading bc both are written in character. Both have point of view chapters and Robb and Theon appear, too.
the body is the blade by @mummer Post ADWD, after Jon is resurrected Satin looks after him. Jon x Satin
Dragons in Winter by @rhiawriter I'm still reading this one because it's huge (and that's a good thing). Daenerys flies to the Wall to meet Maester Aemon and there she also meets Jon. Both have point of view chapters and they are both so in character. Jon x Daenerys.
Other Jon fans feel free to jump in with more suggestions!

A List of Things To Come
*a long post*
I was on hiatus for about 5 years, but I think it's worth the risk of coming back. These are some thoughts and hot takes I've had since then up to now. My professional life is busy, but when I have the time, I'll share. Anyone interested?
Here's a preview, categorized by fandom:
A Song of Ice and Fire:
For asoiaf canon, I’ll speculate on what Jon and Val could have been, and what they could have had together, if he had not kicked the bucket. I’ll also contrast it with Jon's dreams of a life with her, and why he put the torch to it. :( Because of the root of her dislike of Mel and Shireen, I figure she will not be pleased with un-Jon.
Game of Thrones:
In GoT canon, Jon did not love Dany as much as the script suggested he would. In fact, they both failed to take responsibility for the other person. I haven't seen anyone make a statement like this before. (The PTSD is real.) But fic writers did pick up on this and tried to fix it in canon compliant stories, with a lot of success.
Supernatural:
In Supernatural s12-s14, Mary should have found her sons to be way more weird, specifically with each other. But given what we see of her in s6, her characterization is consistent. She would have, and did, ignore the red flags for an idea of family.
I’ll share approving thoughts on Sam and Dean's relationship in the final seasons, disapproving thoughts on the final season of Supernatural, and how I speculated it would either go Gencest or Destiel. We know what happened. No one walked away happy and I think the fandom was all the better for it.
Destiel is not canon. It only became a one-sided love confession. (I know there's a lot of speculation on what happened b/w the studio, the writer's room and the post-production team. Idc. Not gonna touch it.) Thoughts on how I think SPN could have made Destiel go 100% canon involve tweaking the execution and balancing out the themes of Sam and Eileen's love story, the big bad plot, and Dean and Cas's 'love' story.
Outlander:
Outlander (show-only) thoughts, foremost on Roger Mackenzie. He has vexed me from the first time he appeared on screen. I love him dearly, but he vexes me, for how he consistently affects the plot and how that defines his role among the main cast. Later on, I'll run through my favorite moments, episodes and narrative arcs.
Miscellaneous:
I'll share a list of favorite ship-centric fics I've collected over many, many, many years. (Gotta be over 10 years' worth). Along with blurbs that explain my recommendation in a non-spoilery way. Fandoms include: Harry Potter, LOTR, Supernatural, The Walking Dead, ASOIAF, Game of Thrones, Star Wars (Sequel Trilogy), The Flash, Shadowhunters [look away book fans <3], Hannibal (show-only).
I'll also post drafts of fics I never got right and never finished. Mostly GoT-canon divergent Jon/Dany fics.
Most importantly, some very dear friends have encouraged me to vent and hype up my Jonerys fic series "We Could Live Together" as I write it. It's GoT-canon divergent, but I alter some of what occurred before 6x09. Then the story re-enters book territory and moves toward ADOS conclusions. I'd also love to break down and discuss songs from the playlists when it strikes me.
This is the summary of Part 1, "A Long Way Home" (published):
After the Battle for Winterfell, Jon was captured by Bolton men then later found by Daenerys not far from Dragonstone. Their meeting blossoms into the most honest love--until Jon suddenly leaves for Winterfell, only to return to Dragonstone months later with more terrifying tales of dead men and Winter storms. When Daenerys chooses to send her armies north to fight the dead, all is certain but the matter of their bond. After the pain they'd endured, can they come together again? Or will separation be too powerful to overcome? *or* A romantic tale of choice and second chances.
This is the summary of Part 2, "Awake For Ever In Sweet Unrest" (in-progress and unpublished):
Winter has come and further fractured the realm. Yet Jon and Daenerys's betrothal and alliance is well known throughout the Seven Kingdoms. The secret that threatened to break them has made their love stronger, casting a fragrance of hope that draws to the last Targaryens all who seek refuge from political turmoil. Cersei Lannister has fled King's Landing in favor of establishing a bank in Lannisport, to guard against her deposition by the Iron Bank. Euron Greyjoy has set up a naval blockade at Oldtown, yet manages to beguile the Hightowers. And Walder Frey's sundown years threaten to pull his House into a civil war. From the Wall, Jon and Daenerys begin to wage war on the Others. Yet the age of wonder and terror, of gods and heroes, leads them and their enemies in the least expected ways. It begs the question: does all happen the way it must? *or* A romantic telling of the new War for the Dawn.
This is what I've been doing the past few years: working, (dating lol), re-reading the books and joining theory discussions on other sites. What touched my heart was readers asking for me to continue the fic series. Even as I considered it, I was conflicted. Since the show and book canon are so enmeshed, I think we were really vulnerable to being whipped and scored by D&D. But we all found ways to lick our wounds. I'm grateful we were able to become closer and stronger. I'm glad to be a part of it.
So that's my preview. If you've read this far, thank you. <3
There's more to come.

Nine times Sansa Stark had her heart broken and one time she didn't.
Notes:
This is basically a study of different forms of heartbreak and how they can affect you differently. The main pairing is Briensa, but the other pairings are significant enough for me to tag them. This is the first fic in English language I post here, so this is a little unnerving.
The title is from the poem "Litany in Which Certain Things Are Crossed Out" by Richard Siken.
