I love how GRRM always positions various Velaryon brothers as having a close bond with each other. Although not much is known about some of the sibling dynamics in the family, when GRRM chooses to write about them, it is with a sense of brotherhood and unity.
Even in such instances where the relationship is only implied in the text, it is as a positive one. Aurane is a bastard and yet he integrates himself amongst the highborn without any issue, suggesting a somewhat polished upbringing in a castle. He also served in the Velaryon fleet, led by his trueborn half-brother Lord of Driftmark, Monford. It's mentioned in the books that bastard children are usually kept away from the family because they are viewed as a source of shame. It is considered very unusual for a bastard to be raised in a castle with their trueborn family (re: Jon Snow). But that could certainly be the case with the Bastard of Driftmark. His moniker does suggest a close association with house Velaryon which means he was not a bastard that was hidden away. Especially when you consider that Aurane, despite being very treacherous and self-serving, never once does anything against his brother's family. When he sets his sight on a castle he wants to claim, it is not Driftmark, but another castle. He sails his powerful fleet past Driftmark thrice and makes no move to attack the seat governed by his late brother’s son even though house Velaryon is in service to the rebel Stannis and Aurane is trying to ingratiate himself with the Lannister regime. Despite the commonly held belief that bastards will seek to harm their trueborn siblings, Aurane is not once shown acting against Monford or his remaining family at Driftmark. All his treachery is reserved for the Lannisters, who are more or less responsible for Monford’s death at the Battle of the Blackwater.
Addam & Alyn's relationship is a prime example of Velaryon brotherhood. Although the narrative presents their identity arcs as Velaryons differently (in relation to their parents), it’s done so in a manner that still connects the brothers to each other. Alyn’s actions are often framed in the text as a "what would Addam do in this situation?" way. They participate in the Red Sowing together and they clearly remained close enough to each other for the duration that Addam was quickly able to save Alyn's life. They get physically separated afterwards only because Alyn is bedbound from his burns. Alyn openly laughs in the face of a King who calls him brother and says that a "brother by blood" is the only true form of brotherhood. Years after Addam's death, Alyn still honors his brother with a touching memorial.
There are several instances of brotherly love shown between Jace/Luke/Joff as well. From defending each other from a bully to all three echoing each other in upholding their mother's claim, they are always in sync. The loss of a brother is expressed openly and the desire for vengeance too.
The more minor instances of brotherhood in the family further showcase this.
Sometimes it's as simple as hanging out together to serve as royal escorts:
Though Daemon Velaryon, as the Crown’s lord admiral and master of ships, was in King’s Landing with the regents, that did not prevent Jaehaerys and Alysanne from flying their dragons to Driftmark and touring his shipyards, escorted by his sons, Corwyn, Jorgen, and Victor.
Other times it's plotting together. The Silent Five may be committing treason, but they do that as a united front:
When they took their case before the sick and failing Viserys, they made the grievous mistake of questioning the legitimacy of his daughter’s children. Viserys had their tongues removed for this insolence, though he let them keep their heads.
.
Three of the “silent five” had died during the Dance, fighting for Aegon II against Rhaenyra…but two survived.
[...]
“Lacking tongues with which to make their appeal, they preferred to argue with swords,” says Mushroom. However, the plot to murder their young lord went awry when the guards at Castle Driftmark proved loyal to the Sea Snake’s memory and his chosen heir. Ser Malentine was slain during the attempt; his brother captured.
The Velaryon brothers who act within the law are also depicted taking action together each time. Interesting how it's not specified which of the two wishes to claim Driftmark for himself, over the other. They are partners in all that they do and that's all that matters:
All came forward now, insisting that they had more right to Driftmark than “this bastard of Hull, whose mother was a mouse.” Ser Vaemond’s sons Daemion and Daeron took their claim to the council in King’s Landing. When the Hand and the regents ruled against them, they wisely chose to accept the decision and be reconciled with Lord Alyn.
I just think it’s neat that regardless of the circumstances of the characters’ upbringing, whether trueborn or bastard, there’s a supportive bond between Velaryon brothers each time.

It’s highly relevant, notable, and symbolic that after pronouncing justice on the Velaryons who had “slandered” his daughter Rhaenyra’s sons as “Strong bastards”, Viserys stumbled while descending the throne’s towering steps, and though he caught himself, he cut his hand to the bone on a jagged blade. His hand became infected and two fingers had to be amputated, and he was never again truly healthy, nor did he ever sit the throne again.
This is the quote anon refers to, which happens after Viserys orders the protesting and seat-seeking relatives of Vaemond after his death ("A Question of Succession"):
My Answer to the Ask:
I also think that it's highly relevant how the rest of the Velaryons related to Vaemond who tried to claim the Driftmark seat and oust Alyn Velaryon all died (except one) in their attempts ("The Hooded Hand"):
It is interesting how Vaemond tries to take the Driftmark seat for himself by trying to claim Rhaenyra's sons were bastards ("A Question of Succession"):
To use a claim of their illegitimacy to "fight back" against both Viserys' and Corlys' decisions as lords of their houses (that these boys would inherit the specific positions, Jacaerys-the throne, and Lucerys-Driftmark)....and then the Driftmark goes to the legitimized bastard son of Corlys Velaryon, his uncle, anyway! Alyn, who would go on to perform more feats through voyages continuing Corlys' legacy and bringing that sweet-sweet glory and prestige to the house that aristocrats desire almost above all else. Usually. Wasn't Vaemond or any of his sons or nephews--it was the bastard child of his older brother.....funny.
Not only that, like the greens/Alicent, he ended up dead and most of his family dead.
So much for the implication of Viserys' wrong decision concerning the Driftmark claim (not allowing it to go to Vaemond or any of his claiming relatives) and refusing to punish Rhaenyra. And so much for the absolutism of ASoIaF symbolism and Westerosi superstition further disseminated/reaffirmed by already misogynist maesters.
EDIT (9/15/23)
Not only is this chair made out of literal still-sharp-and-pointed-swords (thereby someone/anyone is going to cut themselves regardless of their character), if it supposedly slices unworthy rulers OR slices a ruler when they are making the wrong--either life-saving, strategic, or moral--decision, why are there no reports of Aegon IV getting slashed? Ever?! Or after Aegon V mentally determines to take the eggs to Summerhall or try at all to restore the dragons using unsafe methods?

So few people realize what it means that Aegon III’s regents recognized the legitimacy of Lord Alyn Velaryon after the war.
As we know, only the monarch has the authority to legitimize bastards. Corlys asked Rhaenyra to legitimize both Addam and Alyn, and name Addam heir to Driftmark. She complied.
After Addam’s death, Alyn succeeded Corlys as Lord of Driftmark. Both Daemion and Daeron Velaryon tried to lay claim to Driftmark, but Aegon III’s regents ruled against them and recognized Alyn as a true Velaryon (see pages 654-655 of Fire & Blood).
This pretty much alludes to the fact that Aegon III’s regents recognized Rhaenyra’s authority to legitimize Alyn.
Therefore, Aegon III’s regents indirectly recognize Rhaenyra Targaryen as the rightful Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.

HOTD S2 Possible Spoilers
So, apparently after Blood and Cheese Helaena confronts Rhaenyra and tells her that she will reign for only half a year and be known as Maegor the Cruel with Teats. Rhaenyra tries to justify Daemon’s actions, but Helaena has none of it and foretells Rhaenyra’s death by the dragon gold as the sun.
Daemon starts cheating on Rhaenyra with Nettles, while Rhaenyra grows reviled around the seven kingdoms along with Daemon, and Baela.
Cregan warns Jace that his men aren’t supportive of Rhaenyra, as she’s married to the man who she replaced as heir. Jace tries to ignore his warning that Daemon might try to kill him.
Aemond bonds with Jaehaera and Aegon tells his brother, that Helaena had a dream in which a dragon called the Red Queen will perish.
Rhaenys is disgusted with Daemon, while Corlys faces opposition from his family about Joffrey inheriting Driftmark. Daemion, Daeron and the other Velaryons meet up with the greens and agree to spy on the blacks to avenge their father.
Rhaenyra trashes her room and tells herself in the mirror that she wouldn’t have killed her siblings. She breaks down crying, as she learns from Rhaenys that the small folk are calling her Maegor the Cruel with Teats and orders Daemon to leave her sight.
Daemon starts hitting Rhaenyra and at one point, Aegon III sees but Daemon ignores him.
Alys foretells that her bloodline with the One-Eyed Prince will lead to the birth of the Red Wolf.
Alicent consoles Aemond and forgives him, and reads a letter from one of her allies.
Helaena and Aegon grieve for Jaehaerys and Aegon kills one of the gold cloaks who helped Blood and Cheese.

Valyrian Name Meanings
I am just really too into baby names and High Valyrian, so here comes a long post about both. So what follows is my headcanon completely, though certain choices (i.e. Aegon) I feel are just too coincidental for David J. Peterson not to have done it on purpose.
Based on established Valyrian words, grouped by root
Aegon: from āegenkon, iron
Aelor, Aelora, Aelyx: from ēlie, first
Aemon, Aemond, Aemma: from aemagon or emagon, to have, own, or contain
Aenys, Aenar: from añogar, blood
Aerea, Aerion, Aerys: from aeragon or aerēbagon, to travel
Aethan: from itatagon, to finish
Alyssa, Alysanne: from ālion, a piece of land
Baelon, Baela, Baelor: from baelagon, to help
Corlys, Corwyn: from korzion, Valyrian steel
Daemion, Daemon: from tēmagon, to prick or poke
Daeron, Daella: from dāez, free
Elaena, Helaena, Laena, Laenor: from elēni, voice or music
Gael: from gēlyn, debt
Gaemon: from gēlyn, debt, and mōris, end
Jacaerys: from jaes, deity, and sēter, spell
Jaehaerys, Jaehaera: from jaes, deity, and aeragon or aerēbagon, to travel
Jaenara: from jaes, deity, and ñages, dawn
Lucerys: from loktys, sailor, and sēter, spell
Maegelle, Maegon, Maegor, Maekar: from maege, prudent or practical, also the root for maegi
Monterys: from manda, kind or courteous
Naerys: from naena, multitude
Rhaegar: from rhēdegon, to be known, to have renown
Rhaelle, Rhaella, Rhae: from rāelagon, to keep or maintain
Rhaenys, Rhaena, Rhaenyra: from rhaenagon, to find
Saera, Shaera: from zāeres, crystal
Shaena: from saelie, third
Vaella, Vaegon: from vēzos, sun
Vaemond: from vēzos, sun, and mōris, end
Valarr, Valerion, Valaena: from valenka, male or masculine
Visenya, Viserys, Viserra: from vestriarzir, story
Based on my own headcanon words
Daena, Daenys, Daenara, Daenerys: from dēnas, lamp or lamplighter
Maelor: from maelagon, to wander
Matarys: from matarion, fountain
For notes on the gendering of Valyrian names:
Some names, namely Aemond, Vaemond, Gael, and Rhaelle, do not decline normally in High Valyrian from what I can tell, though if someone can tell me otherwise I will gladly listen. However, for now I am going to chalk these up as Westerosi influence, and gender the first two as terrestrial-gendered names, and the other two as aquatic gender. I am pulling the rest of this essay completely from my mind, so be warned!
Obviously, the four Valyrian genders (lunar, solar, aquatic, and terrestrial) don’t map exactly onto the male/female naming scheme, but it does seem that the lunar gender is exclusively for female names, though of course this has more to do with GRRM using English naming conventions, and I will also chalk this up to Andal influence as well. Terrestrial gendered names similarly seem masculine-leaning, though there is the notable exception of Alysanne, which I have in the past put down as “Alisān” when referring to her in High Valyrian.
Now, this may be overcomplicating things, but I would just really love it if the gendering of these names was significant- I am basing this a little bit on Chinese baby naming where the radicals that make up a kid’s name are treated superstitiously. When it comes to baby names, I lean more towards the idea that they reveal more about the parents than about the kid themselves, but Valyria also has access to dragon dreamers and prophecy, which does lend itself to the idea that the parents might use some vision of their child’s future to inform their name. Also, the further removed Valyrian speakers are away from the culture, this importance might fade away entirely in favor of what sounds good to the parent- there are only a few names from here that we know came from Valyria itself: Aenar, Daenys, Gaemon, and Jaenara.
Anyway, solar and lunar gendered terms are mostly reserved for humans, so I think gendered names here may center the meaning of the name around the character of the child itself. Solar gendered terms include names of occupations, so I think perhaps solar gendered names refer to what a parent might wish for what the child might do, or a great deed- so it may be a sign of ambition or dreams for a child. Lunar terms in turn might instead refer to traits, so what the child might be, so more like virtue names in English. So we might be able to relate this difference with the name root “Rhaen-”. In the name Rhaenys, the meaning could be interpreted as “finder,” while in Rhaena or Rhaenyra, it would be closer to “found.”
On the other hand, I think aquatic and terrestrial might refer to events that might happen in a child’s life- so this may refer to a prophetic knowledge of what is to come in the child's life. The genders themselves fit their names pretty closely: aquatic gender terms tend to refer to things related to liquids, and terrestrial gender terms tend to refer to things related to the earth. Aquatic gender I think would refer to a pivotal moment in a child’s life- not necessarily good or bad, but a moment that changes the course of a life. Sort of like the sea giving and taking away.
I think terrestrial gendered names might be sort of protective charms, like a shield against terrible events. So we might be able to relate this difference with the name root “Maeg-”. In the names Maegor and Maekar, it would indicate “he will become prudent”, while in Maegon, it would indicate a “may he be prudent because he needs to be.” I think this also adds a new dimension to every single one of Jaehaerys’ sons having a terrestrial gendered name.
To make a full summary with a new name, I am going to be using the name root “Bael-”, which we have examples of three genders for. The one we don’t have, solar, I am going to invent, Baelys, might mean “helper.” In lunar gender, Baela, it might mean “helpful”. In aquatic gender, Baelor, it might mean “he will help/be helped and change his life”. In terrestrial gender, Baelon, it would mean “may he be helped when he needs it.”
So there you have it! My unnecessary but super fun headcanons about Valyrian baby names! Thanks for reading this essay.

Sometimes when you can't sleep, you try and think of possible names for Corlys' mother...
There are very few named women of House Velaryon, so we kinda have to go with something that's a variant of the male names or something Valyrian. I'm also assuming that she was either a cousin of Corwyn (possibly a sister of Lianna or Larissa), OR from a house close by, such as the Masseys or Celtigars.
Some options:
Valaena – I personally like the idea that Rhaenys named her children after the mother of the Conquerors, but it needs an honorary spot of consideration here
Laenara/Laenora - similar to Laena and Laenor, also matches L names of Lianna and Larissa
Aenara/Aenora – similar to Laena and Laenor
Veraena or Vaera - just stately Valyrian V names that seem like they could fit someone as cool as Corlys' mother
Larra – after Alarra Massey
Lysa – a variant of Alyssa, also because CORwyn + LYSa -> Corlys
Daenya or Daera – Vaemond's sons are Daeron and Daemion
Lucera - or some other variants of Jacaerys or Lucerys, since we know Corlys named them. This is the only one I could think of that sounded relatively normal lol.
Any favorites? I think Veraena is the frontrunner for me 🤔

💗💗💗🙌🙌🙌! HEY! I read your latest chapter on your fic, and I'm really hooked on it, so badly 😭! But I just wanted to ask three questions, if you don't mind.
1) "Speaking of his nephew, the passing of his supposed name-day allowed him to relax slightly. Knowing the boy that replaced him might no longer exist gave him some respite.."
Assuming his actions had either belated or changed courses of events, for example, Laena's death happened much later than the original. Does this mean Aegon the Younger was born much later into the year alongside his brother Viserys? Does this change the order or manner of Rhaenyra's children with Daemon being born too with Aegon's initiative of taking action — Visenya living or still being stillborn?
I don't know, but I re-read the chapter again and saw that and thought, oh crap did he erase his existence lol 💀
2) Aside from Aegon's growth progress, I was wondering if Sunfyre grows much bigger and stronger in this timeline than og?
I mean, it would only be natural that he would grow bigger — a lot of the characters like Daemon, Baela, who was a kid, and Viserys mentioned how big Sunfyre was. Does Sunfyre and Aegon's daily flying training every day affect his growth. I always assumed Sunfyre was quite big anyway, especially in the show, but I was wondering now does that of that show in your timeline, too. It's just mere curiosity anyway. Naturally, dragons grow big every year, but I can assume the more often you fly with them and leave them in open space on the daily would help their growth.
3) Would Aegon eventually span his influence across the other regions? Like actually go visit Oldtown or even White Harbour(to chat with that Mendrick fellow)?
It would be the most rational course if Aegon wanted to spread his influence and build up rapport with the other houses and to show he is a good contender for the throne. Seeing as he mentioned never went on a royal progress himself, because Viserys was too ill and his mother and Otto often took charge of the kingdom.
In this timeline, Viserys is in good health, and so far, the other lords — particularly the Lannisters, Hightowers, Baratheons, and all in the Small Council - are in good favour of him. I would not be surprised if they would be more than happy to help Aegon out if he asked to stay over. Plus, in this timeline, Aegon is more than eager to show a helping hand when he said he could help with Ironrod and Greyjoys. I am assuming he might, if he wanted, did end up doing that.
Plus, I feel the Manderlys would be Aegon's key in garnering some support from the North — or just House Manderly in general. They are the wealthiest house and are going to have a big fleet (a fleet, Aegon really, really needs if he is going to deal with the Velaryons) at the North and act more Southern than the average Northerner. Maybe getting a good rapport with them and mainly Mendrick would aid his cause.
(The hints on Daemion and Daeron Velaryon is making me feel they are going to be a big hand to Aegon, if the dance does go forth).
Hi! Sorry, I’m replying late, and don’t apologize. I love getting asks!
For the first one I won’t spoil anything, and we’ll find out who Rhaenyra gives birth to in Chapter 19 but butterfly effects happen in my story. Like, Aemond claiming Vermithor instead of Vhagar since Leana was alive a bit longer.
Yeah, Sunfyre would grow pretty big. He was already formidable by the dance, and now he’s more trained than before.
The plan is for Aegon to visit parts of the realm. In Part 3, he visits different regions of the realm. I find it odd how book and show Aegon have never left the Crownlands. It’s easy to blame it on Viserys health but you’re telling me no one told Aegon to go to a tourney even just to watch. I mean, he has a dragon.
The Manderlys (Torrhern and Medrick) are important because they’re close to Aegon’s age, and like you said they’re a gateway to the North.
In the book, Daeron, Daemion and the other Velaryons supported the Greens in the books and considering Daeron’s daughter Daenaera is younger than Jaehaerys and Jaehaera. I assume that Daeron is close to Aegon’s age or at most 5 years older than him.
I just find it bizarre how there are so many canon characters — Medrick, Cregan, Daeron, Daemion who are close to Aegon in age yet they’d never interacted with him or their on the opposing side for plot reasons.

The Games We Play
Cw: attempted murder, mentions of past sexual harassment
Aemond x Velaryon!reader
(Or Aemond's wife is a supporter of Rhaenyra’s and tries her best to contribute to the war effort)
gif by: @jonsaslove
No one would suspect you.
No one has and no one will.
That you, Y/N, Princess Consort to Prince Aemond Targaryen were a Loyalist, was the biggest irony of all.
You who played with Aegon the Usurper's children, you who were friends with Queen Helaena.
You who hide your fangs underneath your sweet smiles.
You who hide a dagger in your sleeve waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
Vaemond had been your father, but his disloyalty to his own family died with him. Daemion and Daeron and you were staunch supporters of Rhaenyra and you would always be.
House Velaryon could never forget the slight done against Princess Rhaenys and Ser Laenor at the Great Council, nor would they forgive her death in the Battle of the Gullet weeks ago.
So when Aegon and your husband kill Princess Rhaenys over the Gullet, you take your chance.
The Greens’ hold on the Throne was unnatural, so unnatural that every show of power they made was another sign of their fear.
Power does not fear.
And neither do you.
Aegon is dead to the world metaphorically, when you are done, he will he dead literally.
“Long live Queen Rhaenyra.” You whisper in his ear as you bring the pillow to his face.
He doesn’t struggle, you don’t think he even knows what is going on.
But the cold knife against your neck tells you your husband does.
“Wife.” He says in a bored voice.
You had not hidden your true nature from him, you had expected for him to hate you when your father ordered you to wed him so he could rise higher than his brother, the Seasnake.
“Husband.” You say feigning to be his sweet and obedient wife.
You do not stop, especially when Aegon begins thrashing under your pillow.
“If you do not stop this our little Daenerys will be left motherless and in the care of my darling mother.” There is a teasing lilt to his threat.
You have only a daughter, to your father’s disappointment.
The next better be a son, or you will shame us all, he had warned as he refused to even acknowledge his grandchild.
“I bet your mother would love that wouldn’t she?” you hated Alicent, you hated her for how she enabled Aegon and his vices. She once even told you to shut up and never tell anyone about Aegon harassing you and asking you if you wanted to fuck a king for a change.
Perhaps she was a nice woman underneath all that, but the damage had been done and you will gladly spit on her grave the moment she dies.
You decide to indulge your stupidly loyal husband and remove the pillow from that fucking pig’s face.
“Fine, you win, Aemond.”
Maybe do that rat poison in his porridge thing again, or that needle in his collar thing.
Aemond does not remove his knife from your neck. It’s become a game, you commit various acts of treason, he stops you and the two of fuck like beasts on the closest room.
A few more attempts, and perhaps your dead father will get his wish of a princely grandson.
“Good girl.” He whispered in the shell of your ear, and you wondered if the two would make it out of the room with all your clothes still in place.
“If this next one is a boy, I was thinking Daemon.” You said over your shoulder with a smirk.

I know you've shown Daemion Velaryon as a suitor for Luce but do you have any plans for his brother Daeron? was curious since he's the father of Daenaera Velaryon, who Aegon III married.
To be totally honest, part of the reason I have avoided mentioning Daeron Velaryon is that I really don’t want to have to deal with two characters named Daeron. 😂 It’s already complicated enough with Daeron / Daemon / Daemion.
Also, I don’t foresee Daenaera having a large role in this series, if any role at all. She’s not even going to be born for several years, and there will be so many other plot things to worry about, it wouldn’t make sense to devote much time to a baby Velaryon cousin. Her main role in canon was to marry Aegon III, who is Alyssa in this universe and therefore cannot marry Daenaera. Daenaera probably doesn’t have much of a shot with Elenar either; I have other plans for him.

The fact that Vaemond falls in love with a woman who would end up making him the step-father to her 3 Strong children when they do eventually marry is so golden, honestly. His sons Daeron and Daemion probably tease him about that. Rhaenys and Corlys definitely get a giggle out of it.
THIS IS SO TRUE !!
Oh the irony !!!!
They settle so nicely in that family unit. Vaemond has boys he can bring up again, playing knights and then a daughter he never had

alyn velaryon & jon snow anti-parallels
alyn velaryon
half-valyrian bastard with silver hair and purple eyes
father passed him off as his son's bastard
fought for rhaenyra's claim to the iron throne in the dance of the dragons
permanently scarred when he failed to ride a dragon
legitimized, placing him ahead of baela, rhaena, daemion, daeron, and the silent five in the succession of driftmark
older brother was initially the heir but killed in war
became lord of the tides
unsuccessful assassination attempt (one of the attackers joined the night's watch as punishment)
married one of the women (is she his cousin? his niece? who knows and who cares) whose claim he superseded, giving her his family name, when she ran to him for shelter, fleeing an unwanted marriage
unsanctioned marriage led to baela and him being seen as unfit heirs to her brother's throne
fathered bastards while married
house velaryon continued through his and baela's son
jon snow
half-valyrian bastard with brown hair and dark gray eyes
uncle passed him off as his own bastard
might be caught up in the dance of the dragons 2.0 (in the show, refused to press his claim to the iron throne)
permanently scarred by a skin-changed eagle (successfully rode a dragon in the show)
(allegedly) legitimized by robb/offered legitimization by stannis, potentially placing him ahead of sansa, arya, bran, and rickon (because they were presumed dead) in the succession of winterfell
older brother cousin was initially the heir but killed in war
refused to become lord of winterfell
successful assassination attempt by night's watchmen
[missing scene] one of the women (is she his cousin? is she his sister? uh oh, good thing we'll find out for sure) whose claim he refused to supersede, [missing scene] her family name, when she [ran to him for shelter, fleeing an unwanted marriage as foretold by the girl in grey prophecy?]
