#739 Abhishek Verma, Saurabh Chaudhary and Sanjeev Rajput make India proud in ISSF World cup; Bumrah’s magic and Rahane’s century helps India thrash WI in first test; 2nd test is on even terms as Holder shines for WI and Kohli for India; Djokovic-Federer-Nadal still the men to beat in US open; Halep, Kerber, Muguruza, Tsitsipas and Thiem shocked and more...:-)

Rahane made first test against WI his own by scoring a century in 2nd innings. Vihari century by 7 runs. He has been impressive with his temperament in this series. WI had to play patiently to force a draw but what transpired has always worried WI cricket fans. Bumrah’s lethal spell of 5-7 ensured WI were reduced to 50-9. He bowled with pace, swing and great skill. He bowled a couple of left handhers with ball pitching on middle and off stump line and straightening to uproot the stumps. Dream deliveries. WI eventually were dismissed for 100. India won 362 runs. It is their biggest win in overseas tests in terms of runs. In 2nd test, WI won the toss and elected to field again. Rahul and Mayank played ease early against Gabriel and Roach. Holder got one to swing which dismissed Rahul. India 32-1. Pujara fell to Cornwall for just 6. It has been poor WI outing for Pujara. Mayank and Virat Kohli took India to lunch at 72-2. Post lunch, both played with intent as India’s total went past 100. Just like quite a few Indians in this series, Mayank didn’t make good use of start as Holder dismissed him for 55. India 115-3. Rahane just made 24 as Roach dismissed him. India 164-4. India were in a bit of trouble here. India needed one of those big daddy hundreds from Virat Kohli. Just after taking India past 200, Holder dismissed Indian captain for 76. Off late, Virat had made quite a few fifties without converting.  It’s a bit unusual but most players go through this phase. India 202-5. Vihari and Pant played well as India’s next gen players took score to 264-5 by end of play. Its an even day where both teams didn’t take full control of the match.

US open kick started in usual fashion. Next gen players like Tsitsipas and Thiem both lost in opening rounds. Zverev struggled but won first 2 rounds in 5 sets . Nadal reached 3rd round without being tested. He won first round in straight sets and was given walkover by Kokinikas in 2nd round. Federer was tested in first 2 round. Sumit Nagal shockingly took opening set against Federer. He had chances to hold early in 2nd set but 2 back to back double faults pulled him back. Federer didn’t look back as he won in 4 sets. He won 2nd round too in 4 sets against Dzumhur after being a set down. Djokovic looked in good form but had a bad left shoulder pain in 2nd round match. Would be interesting to see if he can recover fast from that. He could potentially face Wawrinka in 4th round should he beat Kudla. Medvedev also should good sign of form early on. He could potentially meet Djokovic in QF. Goffin beat Carreno Busta to setup 4th round clash with Federer who outclassed Evans in flat 1000 minutes. Federer didn’t lose a point on serve in 2nd set which is a sensational achievement. De Minaur shocked Nishikori in 4 sets to setup 4th round clash with Dimitrov. Winner of this could face Federer in QF. Kyrgios, Cilic , Isner and Monfils are few dangerous players who are still in the draw.  In ladies draw, Kerber , Halep and Muguruza lost in first 2 round itself. Serena seems to be favorite to win her 24th slam. Osaka , Keys, Barty and Pliskova could be potential challengers. Serena has setup 4th round clash with Martic. She could potentially face Barty in QF and Pliskova in SF.

In shooting where Olympic quota is at stake, Abhishek Verma won gold in 10m pistol in ISSF World cup. In the medal round, Verma was the only shooter to shoot four scores in excess of 10 in the first series before a last shot of 9.4.Saurabh Chaudhary wins bronze in the same event. Proud moment for India. This win is equivalent to Sindhu winning world championship. Sanjeev Rajput wins silver in 50m 3 rifle position. He too qualifies for 2020 Tokyo Olympics.  Shooting can produce some great results for India in 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Fingers crossed.
