Shadows and Snow Angels
Chapter 1 - A little bundle
Azriel x Reader, Azriel x child OCs
Normally when your mate Azriel comes home from the camps and asks you not to get mad it's because he brought home another wounded animal, not a baby boy...
Word count: 1.3k

Requested: Sorta. This prompt wasn't requested to me per se, but I saw @romantasyreader28 made a post wanting someone to write it and it inspired me.
If you don't like what your reading click off!
Series warnings: past emotional abuse, past physical abuse, past emotional trauma, non explicit thoughts of suicide, depression, parental doubt, child abandonment, past child abandonment, brief talk of past pregnancy. no details mentioned, mention of non explicit SA. Every chapter will be individually tagged.
Author's note: I just wanted to say that this prompt pulled me out of a really bad writing slump after my co-writer/biscuit making master childhood kitty unfortunately passed about 2 months ago. So thank you @romantasyreader28, this story really helped me get back into writing and I hope you really enjoy it. It did deviate slightly from your original prompt but I hope that the fact that this will be a series makes up for it. Enjoy!
Author's note 2: hey so I lied, I got a boost of energy and actually finished this early, so I'm only 1 day late. I'm going to try and put a fic or drabble out every Friday but please be aware I'm in the middle of moving so if I miss a day or am late, it's probably for good reason.
Chapter warnings: brief talk of past child abandonment, non explicit memories of child abuse, brief mention of being pregnant, implied SA, some cursing but not much.
See normally when your mate Azriel comes home from the camps and asks you not to be mad, it's because he brought home another wounded animal, not a baby boy...
"Please don't be upset, Devlon said that if someone didn't take him then he was going to send him off to another camp and he would end up just like Cass... I couldn't just leave him like that." His Shadows reached out to you invitingly, curling and spinning like they were excited. "Love, please say something..."
Your mate never rambled, it wasn't in his nature and that's what shocked you the most to be honest. So you sat where you were on the couch, mid bite of pizza, trying to figure out if he actually adopted a baby without telling you, or if he just decided to babysit Nyx for the night and is pranking you. No, no he definitely adopted a baby and didn't tell you, that sounds about right for him.
"Azriel, tell me that this is a prank and that, THAT little boy is just our nephew in a table cloth..." You set down your plate of food and walked over to your mate, Shadows now running up your back and sitting on your shoulders calmly. You knew, you just had a feeling in your gut that he was not just joking around.
Azriel was clutching the small bundle to his chest as if it would disappear if he loosened his grip even slightly. You came and pulled back the fabric to see a small Illyrian infant tightly wrapped in a tattered excuse of a baby blanket. You gasped and clapped a hand over your mouth as you saw the most precious little thing, he had no clothes but the blanket. A lithe inky Shadow jumped from your hand and into the little boy. It nuzzled his cheek lovingly before returning to rest under your mates wing.
You scooped the baby up out of Azriels arms before he could react and headed upstairs to the nursery. You quickly set him on the changing table, and unfurled the raggy fabric. The poor thing didn't even have a diaper just mess of fabric pinned against him. You didn't have to even leave the changing station seeing as the shadows that followed you up the stairs had a clean garment waiting right next to you. As you were changing him into a fresh, actual diaper, you heard Azriel's footsteps coming up the stairs behind you.
"Babe, I know that you have a perfectly reasonable explanation but your timing is kind of horrible Azzie..." You said only half joking as you handed him the baby back gently and grabbed the nearest actual blanket to wrap around him snuggly. You quickly ran to dress your sleeping baby girl is some warm clothes and a blanket too. Barely 2 weeks old and the little Astrid was already mixed into the family drama.
"Where are we going?" Azriel asked tentatively. He was holding the baby like a statue, only holding him right because of how you handed him over. Azriel's Shadows swarmed Astrid the moment you set her down to go nuzzle and love on her. You had taught them to be careful to not completely smother her. It was said that a Shadowsinger's Shadows would only listen to their master. Maybe it was the mating bond, maybe they just liked you but sometimes it seemed that the inky void that shrouds your mate, liked you better.
"Az, you know how to hold a baby, you know cuz your and Uncle... And a Father..." You set your still daughter back in her crib for a moment and padded over and cradle your mates face in your hand, your other intertwined with his scared flesh. "I'm not mad at you. Just, you do realize that we've only had Astrid for a couple of weeks and now we have two, right?"
"I know, and I'm sorry for not telling you. I was afraid if I didn't bring him home, Devlon would have sent him off before I could get back." Azriels shoulders seemed to finally relax a shadow falling from his mess of curls to sit around his neck calming. His grip on the swaddled little one became natural again. "You still didn't tell me where we are going, it past 1 in the morning."
You picked up Astrid, shooing away the inky void that doted on her constantly and walked to your bed room to grab your shoes and your coat. Azriel stood in the hallway that lead back downstairs, waiting for you patiently. He was bouncing the little boy in his arms gently, this parental instincts finally coming back to him when the little one started to cry.
"Feyre always said that we could head over to the river house in a time of emergency and I'm detailing 'we just adopted a little boy with no clothes or anything we need to take care for of a second baby,' an emergency. She probably still has some clothes that is too small for Nyx laying around, for now at least."
You both decided to walk the short distance to you home to the giant river house. Your daughters wings fluttered at the feel of snowflakes melting on the every so often. You both walked close together, as you usually did, babys in arms, the quiet of velaris washed over the two of you like a blanket. You could feel Azriel's Shadows almost climbing up your legs and coming to rest on your shoulders to admire their masters daughter.
"Ok..." You said slowly your head clearing with the fresh chilled air. "I'm not upset. But I'm going to ask some questions and I need better than 'I don't know', ok?" You needed to hear what happened, as much as it happens, it's rare for a baby to end up with no one and you wanted to know everything about this little life that you were about to add to your family.
Azriel nodded his head, his eyes trailed over the white city. As tense as he always looked, Azriel's Shadows curled up under his wings comfortably. He cradled the infant tightly to his chest, scarred fingers gently played with the edge of the blanket as you both walked. Normally the Shadows would flock to you when you had Astrid but they seemed to have divided, wanting to look over and cuddle both babys.
"Does he have a name?" You start with. As you cross the Sidra you can smell the food coming from the rainbow, you could even hear the faint sound of music booming, Rita's not being far away. You still can't believe that days of going out and partying until sunrise with your family wouldn't be an option for a long, long while.
"Not that I know of." He shrugged, adjusting the blanket so the infants wings fan out comfortably after he started to fuss. The boy seemed to be a calm baby so far but you would be taking him to madja bright and early tomorrow just to make sure nothing was wrong.
"How old is he?"
"Devlon said he's not more than 6 months old, he didn't know specifics. He just said that his father was killed in the blood rite this year and his mother was... Like I said, he would have been just another Cass..." He bounced the little boy in his arms, more to soothe himself than the baby.
Your blood boiled in your veins, and you had to take multiple deep breaths to keep from crying. You loved your mate dearly, and his brothers were your family, the best you could have asked for but Illyrians in general made you so angry most of the time! They treat females like property and they steal them just the same. Then the female gets shamed for being pregnant, without a husband. If he really was like Cass, you prayed to the Cauldron that his mother had a peaceful second life after what she no doubt endured.
"Well, if we're going to keep him, he's going to need a name." You said with a smile as you neared the side walk that lead up to the river house. Your mate had the biggest heart and the kindest soul, you didn't care what anyone said, you knew him best. This male brought home countless animals so he could nurse them back to health. He always made sure that nothing bad happened to those animals, and if they didn't make it, they earned a spot in your backyard with the other rainbow pets, as Azriel likes to call them. If the Mother sent him a baby then she meant for us to be the ones to love him. Azriel thought for a bit. He only looked up once we stood at the front door of his brother's home.
"What about Rhain?" A shadow flew up and wrapped around the door knocker, knocking loudly before returning to your mates shoulder.
"Why Rhain?" You asked before knocking again louder this time before you saw a light turn on inside meaning you got somes attention.
Azriel shrugged his shoulders and shook his head with the smallest smile coming to rest over his face. He looked down at the bundled little baby with a fondness you only seen him show to your daughter. You head shuffling on the other side of the door and smiled at your mate before your brother in law opened the door, looking very much worse for wear.
"Rhain it is."
FYI Rhain, pronounced Rain or Rine, either is fine means strength, power, resistance, and potential. It also means 'the spear' in Welsh.

Daddy!Azriel x Mommy!Reader
Summary:Â Anon Req: Idk if youâre taking requests and itâs okay if you arenât but I was rereading Feysand bonus chapter and it mentions that Feyreâs libido was heightened due to pregnancy and really wanted a fic where we see that with Az and reader bc I LOVE LOVE your daddy!Az fics and it would be funny seeing Az being a dad but also finding time to pleasure his pregnant mate due to hormones that manâs schedule would be jammed pack hahaha
Warnings: Smut, reader is pregnant, light breeding kink.
Word Count: 2061
Notes: This req is literally from a year ago today đł now that's some sort of fate (or mad laziness lol) Also, it's been a hot minute since I've written some smut hopefully it's good.
Bat Babies ages in this fic: Wren, Nyx, Gid 8, Baz 6, Zuzu 3, Jax 2, Knox and Malos in the womb.
_________________________________________
âWren,â you sigh exasperatedly at your eight year old, âPlease go play with your siblings. Mommy just needs a few minutes to herself.âÂ
Itâs hard to keep your tone cool and level while your core is burning, dripping for the mate whoâs stepped into the shadows whilst you bargain with your son. The both of you had snuck off for a few quick kisses that turned into something more, and itâs the first time youâve had any time to yourselves in weeks. You donât know if itâs being pregnant with two babies this time around making every single one of your senses heightened, but you donât recall being this horny for your mate during your first four pregnancies.
Oh, you were insatiable, sweetheart, your mate purrs in your mind. You can feel the smugness radiating off of him not only from the bond tethering you, but from where he stands, five feet away and shrouded in darkness. And I loved every moment of it. You did too, of course.
You shut your eyes for a long second so your oldest son doesnât catch you rolling them. I would love for you to remind me of just how much I loved it, mate, you send back, letting your frustrated desperation cling to your words, if we can ever seem to find the time.
Last week, Zuzu refused to go to Feyreâs painting class even though all of the other cousins were going in for a private session the High Lady had set up specifically so that you and your mate could spend the night alone together. She spent the entire time latched to Azrielâs leg and crying her little eyes out until the both of you gave in and let your daughter stay home. Your only saving grace that night was getting to lounge on the couch with a good bookâthat really only made you hornier for your mateâwhilst Azriel and Zuzu baked cookies in the kitchen and hand delivered them to you with a large glass of milk.
A few days ago, it was Baz who had trouble sleeping and came pounding at your door while your mate was three fingers deep into your sopping cunt. The both of you had hastily gotten dressed, grumbling the entire time you did so, and let your second oldest son into the room. Azriel swiftly avoided Bazâs questioning about why your door had been locked in the first place, and the both of you watched him crawl up onto your bed and settle in the center of the tangled sheets, looking at the both of you expectantly. Baz talked your ears off all night long.Â
And it was only last night when Jax who couldnât be consoled when he couldnât find his stuffed Suriel for bedtime. Azriel spent an hour scouring your house for the toy while you held Jax close, trying to keep your own emotions calm and serene instead of the frustration you wanted to give into, lest your son pick up on them and dampen his mood further. Even with his keen spymaster abilities and the shadows heâd released to help the cause, Azriel came up empty.
With four young children and twins on the way, it seemed as though they always knew the perfect time to interrupt you and your mate every time you tried to get close to each other.Â
Wren frowns, his head falling back on his shoulders as he stares up at you with those hazel eyes that are a gift from his father. Theyâre pleading, and he really wants to have that sleepover with Gideon and Nyx, but youâve never been a sucker for those pleading looks. If Wren thinks that huffing and puffing and making sad faces is going to change your mind, he came to the wrong parent.
Especially since heâs interrupted your fun as well.
You tap your foot, waiting your son out. He stares, and you stare back. You even cross your arms over your chest, resting them over the swollenness of your stomach, nearly two-thirds of the way through your pregnancy.
Your body goes taut at the feeling that Azriel lets zip down the bond. Itâs one of complete arousal, his obsession with you when you make that stern face.Â
It takes all of your willpower not to shift on your feet with the rush of wetness that accompanies the feeling of heat rushing through your veins. Not to clench your thighs together or glance over to where your mate stands, probably staring at you with his hazel eyes, filled with need.
Not that youâd be able to see him in the darkness anyway.
Wrenâs pleading draws your attention away from your desires and back to the matter at hand.
âPlease, mom!â
Clearing your throat so that it doesnât falter when you speak, you answer. âYou may have a sleepover with Nyx and Gideon tomorrow night if you're a good boy tonight. And that means playing with your siblings for a few minutes until I come to take Jax and Zuz for their baths.â
Youâre pretty sure you lost your eldest son when you agreed to the sleepover, and you nearly stumble when he throws himself at you, hugging you tight.Â
âThank you, thank you, thank you!â Wren screeches with excitement, and your heart grows when he places a fleeting kiss to your stomach and bolts from the room. You can hear him tearing down the halls to where Baz is loudly making the toys in the living room speak.Â
âSweetheart, are you crying?â Azrielâs voice startles you. No longer is he hiding in the shadows, but at your side, swiping a calloused thumb across your cheek, swiping away the wetness.
âHeâs just so sweet,â you gush, leaning into your mateâs arms. You press your ear to his chest, listening to the steady and strong thumping of his heart. You love this man and everything that youâve built together. Through all of the missions and worrying, to building a home and family together, you truly are grateful for the life that you live.
âYou know what else is sweet?â Azriel says, his suggestive whisper caressing the shell of your ear. It causes you to shiver, fingers curling into his shirt as he pulls you closer, lifting you easily into his arms.
âWhat?â you answer breathlessly, already losing yourself to your mateâs touch again. Namely, his thick cock brushing against your cunt with each step closer to the desk in the office he takes.
You donât even have to worry about the kids right now. You can fall into the bliss youâve been so desperately trying to find for the past week, because you noted how Azrielâs shadows trailed your son from the room, at least one always with every child at all times of the day.
âYou.â His lips slant over yours, his tongue parting your lips with ease. You meet him halfway, licking, tasting your way as his hands hike up the skirts of your dress and pull your panties to the side as soon as your ass hits the edge of the wooden desk. âTell me what you need, mate.â
There isnât time for foreplay, for teasing nips of teeth against your hardened nipples. Theyâre rubbing against the fabric of your dress just fine. No time for orgasms by his hands, his tongue. Youâd hardly be able to enjoy the view of Azriel on his knees for you with the size of your bump.
âYour cock,â you whimper, trying desperately to keep your voice low.
You shudder against the fingers he drags across your cunt, swiping through your slick. Youâre ready, more than. You need him right this instant.
Azriel swallows the plea youâre about to release, enjoying the way you tug on his hair as a way to reprimand him. It has him grinning into the kiss, his fingers quickly fumbling with his belt because heâs just as desperate as you are, having not nearly been near youâor in youâenough in the past few weeks.Â
Your pesky children are always interrupting.
âYour wish is my command,â he answers easily, and your back arches as he rubs the head of his cock across your sopping heat.
Azriel almost snarls with pleasure at the sight of your bump pressing sky-high. He leans in closer, loving the feeling of the three of you close. Youâre so fucking beautiful, and thereâs something special about how you look swollen with his child, something the both of you made.
Heâs seen it four times over by now, and it never gets fucking old. Heâll keep you good and pregnant until you tell him you donât want any more children.
And he loves the way you writhe against him, hook your legs around his waist, trying to force him closer, your cunt greedily trying to suck his cock deep into your womb. Loves the way your nails pinch into his shoulders, the way your teeth latch onto his lip to keep quiet when he pushes into you in one fell swoop.Â
Thereâs a burst of blood on his tongue but Azriel loves it, quickly pulling out and pressing back in so that youâll bite him again. When you come down from your high, youâll apologize profusely, but he doesnât care, likes a bit of pain with his pleasure.Â
Heâll revel in the redness of your cheeks when your children ask him what happened to him later, though.
âAzriel,â you cry, clutching onto your mate for dear life. You love the feeling of his thick cock stretching you, the gushing between your legs when he so easily finds that spot that has you cumming within seconds like some whore. He knows that you need this release, that the both of you need to be quick and quiet with your fucking. Your children can only be occupied for so long.
âIâll make sure Cassian or Rhys can take the children tomorrow,â Azriel promises against your mouth, smothering the sounds you make for him. Heâs just as desperate to hear you scream, the reminder of it has heat pooling in his core, his pace quickening. âThen, you can scream as loud as you want, mate, all night long.â
A second orgasm washes over you like a wave. Azriel didnât even have to stick his hands between the both of you, but he is now, wanting one more before he releases himself. Itâs brewing quickly, and he circles his fingers over your clit, skilled and an expert at everything that has to do with you.
âYes, yes, yes!â You beg, hips rolling to meet his. Azriel groans into your neck, sucking harshly and laving his tongue over the hurt.
âIâm going to cum,â he pants harshly, straightening to his full height to look down at you in all of your sexed-out glory. The way you can barely keep yourself braced against the desk, the way your mouth is parted in that perfect shape that almost makes him want to pull out and stick his cock down your throat instead. The way that your eyes are rolled so far into the back of your head that you can see the bond connecting the both of you, completely overcome with desire.
You keen your agreement, words jumbled as he takes you to your peak again, the both of you shuddering with pleasure as your orgasms overcome you.Â
He rubs you through your pleasure, rocking his hips slowly as he empties himself deeply inside of you. If you werenât already pregnant, Azrielâs sure you would be now, with how much cum heâs pumping inside of you.
Your mate hugs you close, rubbing your back until you come down from your high.Â
You lean back, blinking up at him blearily, and it makes Azriel want to take you all over again.
âIs that a promise, mate?â You ask, referring to him making sure that all of your children will be away at their aunts and uncles tomorrow night, leaving the both of you to yourselves. Well, plus the two in your uterus.
Azriel hums, finally pulling out of you. You gasp at the loss but his fingers are there, stuffing the leaking cum back into your cunt. Youâre not sure your legs can support you right now, but they donât need to, because youâre already rearing for another round.Â
âItâs a promise, sweetheart.â

Two hearts for one
Azriel X OC
Word count: +9100
Summary: Longing for what everyone around him seems to have, Azriel wanders the night streets of Velaris until a young female bumps into him and changes his life
Warnings: none I think, but let me know if you find something that should be mentioned
@azrielappreciationweek Day 3: Belonging Dividers by @tsunami-of-tears
Night slowly spread its dark cloak over the city, stars sadly shone in the autumn sky. Lights came to live as most of the shops closed and people were hurrying to get home to their loved ones, tugging their coats closer to protect themselves from biting cold of evening breeze.
As every Friday, Inner Circle had a family dinner followed by a game night. After eating delicious meal, everyone moved to the sitting room, merry cacophony of voices and laughter filled the room. Azriel took his usual place in the alcove near the entrance, half hidden in the shadows, soft small smile on his face.
He loved his family. Watching their smiling faces made him feel at peace and very lonely at the same time. He knew he belonged here, that they all loved him and cared for him, yet something was always missing.
Even now.
He watched Mor gently tuck strand of hair behind Emerie's ear, gleam of affection in her eyes.
Elain sat pressed into Lucien's side, hands hugging her growing belly while he had his arm around her shoulders, keeping her warm undoubtedly. His other hand was caressing her belly and the babe who was already responding to their touches, soft smiles on their faces as they whispered the words of love.
Cassian was vividly discussing his ideas for new training for Valkyries with his mate who sipped wine from the glass, pretending to be bored, but Azriel knew she was listening carefully, committing each word to memory.
Amren was seated on floor in front of the fireplace with crackling fire, small flames slowly licking the logs. Varian sat next to her, leaning closer while he whispered something to her. His eyes never left her face, the enormous amount love, devotion and admiration palpable.
And then there was his brother and High Lord, Rhys. He brought a warm blanket to wrap it around his mate and almost sleeping baby boy in her arms. Nyx babbled sleepily as his father gently placed kiss on his forehead. Rhys chuckled in answer and sat down, pulling Feyre closer to kiss her too. She rested head on his shoulder and together they watched their child, eyes shining with joy.
This room was a perfect picture of warmth, peace and love. Azriel knew that he was part of it, that this was his family he belonged to, yet he felt like uninvited intruder spying on them through thick glass. He was really trying to be happy for them, but more he watched them, more his heart hurt.
Why? Why they liked him? Why was he here? Why he felt so lonely? Why there wasn't anyone who would love him? All he longed for was a person, a single person who would love him dearly. A person he could give his whole heart to, unveil his darkest thoughts without being judged. Was it so impossible for him to be loved and accepted?
His fingers in the pockets twitched, searching for someone to touch and hold onto. Suddenly the air thickened and he felt like he was choking on it. He couldn't take it anymore.
Looking up at the picture of happiness laid in front of him, he made a step to the doors. When nobody noticed it, he made another one. On the threshold he looked back one more time, his heart squeezed in pain. Taking the scarf from hanger he wrapped it around his neck and quietly left.
White clouds rose from his mouth as he walked down the street, hands tucked in pockets. It was quite cold, but he didn't mind it. The place he grew up at, used to be much colder than this city, yet he had never owned a coat. Of course, he could dash to the night sky and be back in his room in no time, but he needed time to think. Maybe if he tired himself, he would immediately fall asleep instead of drowning in loneliness until the dawn. Letting his legs carry him wherever they wanted, he got lost in his thoughts.
The city was silent, most of its residents already retired to the welcoming warmth of their beds - beds they shared with someone dear. Azriel had no idea where he was, not that he cared anyway. More he thought about his situation, more lonely and hurt he felt. His chest felt heavy, every breath was getting harder. Before he could stop it, a quiet sob escaped between his lips, tears stinging his eyes. Tugging the shadows even closer, he looked like a ghost, a dark cloud wandering through empty streets of the sleeping city.
He was about turn the corner when someone came running from the opposite direction and bumped into him. He didn't expect it and the impact made him take a few steps back. The other person yelped and fell down. Quickly, he wiped his eyes and looked at the person.
It was a young female. Dressed in warm looking long coat, she was gaping at him, pale and visibly scared. He immediately dropped on his knees and started to collect things that spilled out from her handbag when she fell down.
"I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice husky. "I didn't pay attention to my surrounding.. Are you okay?"
She just nodded and looked somewhere into the dark behind her, her eyes wide with fear. He followed her gaze and noticed two males lurking in the darkness, waiting. He didn't need more to understand the situation.
He immediately stood up again. Baring his teeth, he spread his wings wide behind him. The blood was boiling in his veins. He didn't even want to imagine what could have happened, if she didn't bump into him. His hand instinctively reached for a dagger he hadn't on him right now. He took step toward those cowards and then reminded himself that the female was still there on the ground. Meanwhile, males pivoted and disappeared in the alley.
Azriel turned back to the female and offered her hand. She gaped at him with the same amount of fear, heaving. Just then he realized that he didn't have gloves, his scars on full display. He hesitated.
"I'm not going to hurt you.." He handed her the handbag that he still clutched in his other hand. She took it from him, shivering like a leaf in cold wind. "Do you.. do you think you can stand up? Aren't you injured?"
"I- I think I'm fine," she finally accepted his hand and he pulled her up. Her voice was shaky, but so gentle and sweet that it pushed tears back into his eyes. As the dim light of street lamp banished shadows from his face, she curiously eyed him. "Are you okay?"
He just chuckled humourlessly. "I'm perfectly fine.." he cleared his throat, looking down at tips of his shoes. "If you don't mind, I'd escort you home. Just in case those two change their mind. It's way too late for females to be outside on their own."
"That's kind of you," she smiled shyly.
They started to walk down the street Azriel came from. Azriel let the female lead the way and walked beside her in silence. Curiosity took better of him and he peeked at her out of the corner of eye.
She was quite beautiful. It wasn't the eyes-striking kind of beauty, but something more softer and subtle that was hard to explain. Her face was ordinary, almost plain without makeup, yet nice as faces of all young females. Big round eyes of colour of summer sky, small nose, full plush-looking lips, cheeks red from the cold wind. Her waist long hair seemed to be dark in dim light of streets. He couldn't put a finger on it, but he felt better in her presence.
She led him to the one of the nice but cheap neighbourhoods. Small houses with even smaller gardens stood one next to each other, the street was clean and somehow cozy though. And dark. At this hour there wasn't a single lit window. People in this part of the city had to work hard to feed their families and pay bills, so naturally they were tired and already asleep. Azriel had hardly ever passed place like this, but he could imagine children laughing and playing on the street during the day while mothers did laundry talking with each other. Maybe they weren't rich, but they definitely had something much better. Something he'd love to have too.
Female stopped in front of the smallest house on the street and nervously brushed her hair back. His eyes roamed over the well maintained house with white curtains before they looked down at her. She craned her neck with determination in her eyes, hardly reaching to his chest.
"I'm so sorry for running into you before.. and also for making you walk all the way to the outskirts of the city. I guess that you had much better plan for tonight.."
"No, don't apologize, please. I was just aimlessly wandering around, so.. I'm glad I could be to your service."
She nervously played with her handbag. "I'd like to thank you for.. you know.." With worry she looked at a certain window of her home. "If it wasn't for you, I might not return home. So.. I want to thank you properly. If you don't mind, I'd like to invite you to dinner."
Azriel's wings rustled and he gaped at her, astonished. "That isn't necessary. I didn't do it to get something back from you."
"Please," she insisted. "I don't have enough to thank you in any other way, but.. I'd be happy if you could come for dinner tomorrow." Her cheeks were burning with embarrassment. "It won't be anything amazing nor big, but.. Please. What you did for me tonight, to me it means more than you can imagine."
Azriel hesitantly nodded. "I'll come." He nervously shifted his weight, pulling his scarf a bit higher. "Can I know your name?"
Her eyes widened. "Oh, I'm sorry.. I'm Ivy."
"Ivy," he repeated to himself. "I'm Azriel."
"Nice to meet you, Azriel." Her bright smile was so genuine that the corners of his lips lifted into a smile of his own.
"Nice to meet you too," he murmured into the night. "You should go in. I'll wait until you lock the door and then I'll check surroundings. You don't need to worry tonight."
She thanked him again and left him alone on the road. However, before closing the door, her eyes searched for him one more time and she waved him goodbye. Gentle breeze brought her silent 'good night' to his ears. He waited for few minutes until he saw dim light in one of the windows and then he dashed to the sky. He made several rounds above the whole neighbourhood and only when he was sure that there was no danger, he headed to the House of Wind.
He felt strangely weightless as he went through his night routine, all the previous sadness and loneliness long forgotten. Before sleep snatched him away he repeated her name several times. He liked the way the word rolled off the tongue. So light, refreshing and soft as her. The shadows he left behind, returned and whispered to his ear. They assured him that she safely got to the bed, omitting any details. Repeating her name like a prayer one more time, he nestled in his bed and tired, instantly fell asleep.
Azriel smoothly landed on the road in front of the smallest house on the street. Even though it was just last night that he stood on the same spot, it felt like long time ago.
Despite the fact that he went to the bed so late, he woke up at sunrise, nervous and excited at the same time. Training with Cassian helped him to get rid of some excessive energy, but it still wasn't enough. He couldn't focus on work, so he spent most of the day outside, window shopping.
He didn't want to show up empty handed to the dinner Ivy invited him to. He knew little to nothing about her, so it was hard to decide what to bring. At first, he considered buying some good wine, but it could easily turn into embarrassing situation if she was abstinent. Then he spent some time eyeing flowers. He gave up the idea, too, because giving flowers to female felt too intimate for the basically first meeting. After all, she invited him to thank him, not to date him.
He wandered all around the market place, dismissing one idea after another until he found a small shop with vegetable. That's where it hit him and no matter how he approached the idea, it seemed to be the safest option. Basket of fruit as a gift was polite enough, it didn't give the vibes of any expectations and everyone liked the fruit. He picked up the most deliciously looking fruit, then he found a lovely basket. After purchasing everything he could possibly need, he returned to his room and spent several hours rearranging his creation.
Azriel sighed heavily. He was more nervous than before a real date. He held out the basket that he carried so carefully, and straightened the ribbon. Everything seemed to be on its place. He ran hand through his dark hair that got messy during the flight, brushing them back.
Suddenly he noticed the tense silence. He could swear that he saw children playing outside as he flew above the roofs, but the street was empty now. They had to hide away when he landed. He could only imagine what they thought about him. Feeling unsure of what to do, he approached the door and knocked.
The sounds of cutting were replaced by fast steps and the door flew open. Surprised Ivy stood on threshold, pink apron with frills hanging on her hips.
"Oh, hi.." She looked back into the room and sighed in relief. "For a second I thought I lost the track of time," she smiled.
Azriel looked behind her at the clock hanging on the opposite wall. It was hardly four. Cold sweat washed over him. He was so excited that he came way too soon. "I apologize. I didn't mean to-.. I can wait outside-.."
"Nonsense! It's okay," she moved to the side. "Come in."
He had mixed feelings as he stepped in and looked around. The house seemed to be even smaller than from outside, he hardly fit in. He was standing in a narrow corridor with a hanger and a shoes rack, his broad shoulders almost taking all the space between the walls, tips of wing touching ceiling. The door on the right led to a tiny kitchen squeezed together with a dinning room. Another door led to a sitting room and then there was a staircase to the second floor. Used to the airy and large rooms he felt strange in the house where he needed only to reach up to touch the ceiling.
"I'm sorry," Ivy noticed his discomfort. "You are probably used to something better.."
"Don't apologize," he smiled, "I like it. It's cozy."
Then he remembered the gift he brought. The heart hammered in his chest as he took it out from behind his back.
"I wasn't sure what you like, so.."
Ivy clasped hands to her cheeks. "Aww, you shouldn't have worried. I invited you to thank you."
"I know. I just wanted to bring you something to thank you for having me today."
"Mommy? Who's that?" A small, tiny voice came somewhere from the sitting room.
Azriel froze on the spot. It didn't even occur to him that Ivy could actually be married and have family. Now he felt really bad for intruding her home.
Ivy looked up at him apologetic. "It's a friend I told you about, honey. Come out to greet him properly."
A golden-brown head peeked from behind the door frame, followed by big, bright eyes of the same colour as her mum's.
"This is my daughter, Adelina. Lina, this is Azriel, friend who helped mommy last night."
Little girl timidly took a step to the corridor.
"Hello," she spoke in small voice and ran back to the room.
"I'm so sorry. She isn't used to the strangers. We don't have guests here often."
Azriel shook his head, still too stunned.
"No, it's fine. I mean.." He cleared his throat, rubbing on the nape of his neck. "Where is her father?"
Ivy inhaled sharply, her voice low. "That male ran away as soon as he learned I'm pregnant."
Dread washed over him. "I-I'm sorry I-.." He wasn't sure what to say anymore. He was making one mistake after another. That's not like him.
Ivy closed her eyes and inhaled deeply to get over the feeling that the memory brought up. "You couldn't know. It's just.. so hard," she said whispering. "That male.. he was one big red flag, but I was too in love and naive to see it before it was late. I'm not sorry though. Having Lina is the best thing that happened to me in my entire life. No matter how hard it is, I'm happy to have her."
She looked up at him, smiling kindly with tears shining in her eyes. "Thank you so much for yesterday. I don't want to even imagine what would happen with her, if I wouldn't make it home. You saved both of us." She gently took his hand and squeezed it as she spoke, not minding his scars at all.
Azriel emptied his lungs with relief. He wasn't sure why he was holding his breath whole the time. "I'm glad I could help you," he murmured, heat settling in his cheeks.
"I-I think I should go finish the dinner if we want to eat on time," Ivy looked over to the kitchen and the spread out ingredients and pots, tucking a strand of long hair behind ear. She seemed to be just as flustered as Azriel. "Do you want to sit down in the sitting room? Lina is shy and quite quiet kid, she won't bother you. You can take rest there until meal is ready."
He just nodded, handing her basket of fruit and headed to the mentioned room. He had to duck to pass through the door, lowering his wings as much as he could. Sighing he straightened up and took a look around. The room was small but clean and bright with a smaller sofa, bookcase, few shelves and some flowers. Through the window with lace curtain he saw backyards between the houses.
One corner of the room was dedicated to a few toys nicely lined up on shelf and in doll house made out of box. When he compared it to the amount of toys little Nyx already owned, he felt sorry he didn't know about the girl before. At that moment he decided that next time he would bring her some nice doll to play with. However, then he awkwardly remembered that there might be no next time and he felt sad.
Small noise in the corner behind the sofa drew his attention. Ever curious shadows peeked there and returned to whisper in his ear. He didn't need them to know that Adelina was hidden there. There wasn't better place to hide at for child of her size anyway. He rubbed nape of his neck, troubled. Little girl was apparently scared of him. No wonder - he was huge, winged male she had never seen before. His appearance was intimidating even for adults at times.
Sending his shadows behind his back, he lowered to his knees. He knew that he didn't need to do this, yet he wanted to get to know little girl.
"Hey, there," he peeked behind the sofa. He imagined he was speaking to Nyx to get over the nervousness. With little babe whom he saw born, his soft side came out naturally. The corners of his mouth lifted in a gentle smile, but girl just watched him with wide eyes, shy and scared.
"I'm Azriel. You are Adelina, right?" She just nodded once. "Nice to meet you, Adelina. Thank you for having me for the dinner today." He was just rambling, not sure what to say. "I brought some fruit. Do you like fruit?" She again only nodded, crushing dirty rag doll in her small hands.
"I'm so glad to hear that," he smiled. "Is that your doll?" Another nod. "She's so lovely. What is her name?"
Confused, little girl looked down at doll and then back up at him. "She doesn't have one," her tiny voice was hardly audible.
"It's pity. You should give her some, otherwise she will be sad."
Little girl thought about it for a while. "Feyre," she said after few minutes of silence.
Azriel blinked in surprise. "That's nice name and it suits her very much. Tell me, where did you hear such name?"
"It's name of my teacher in the painting club. She is very kind and beautiful. Do you know that she is also our High Lady?"
"Oh, I do," Azriel laughed. "She will be very pleased to hear that you like her when I return home."
Adelina gaped at him on awe, her wide open blue eyes shining. "You know her?"
"Yes, she is wife of my brother. We are good friends."
Girl came out from her hiding place and stepped closer. "Really?"
"Really," Azriel seriously nodded.
"So you live with her?"
"Sometimes. I'm mostly staying in my room in the House of Wind, but sometimes I stay overnight at her house."
Girl moved even closer, shyly peeking behind him.
"Are they real?" Her small finger pointed to his wings.
Azriel stretched them out as much as he could without knocking off something and waved with them slightly.
"What do you think?" he winked at her. Girl chuckled in answer.
"And what's that?" One tendril of shadows crawled around his feet, reaching out to her.
"Oh, that's just shadow. You don't need to be scared. It won't hurt you, it's just curious," he smiled shyly, tugging the shadow back behind his back, but it ignored him and peeked out again.
"Is it your friend?"
"It's with me since I was as little as you, taking care of me."
"So it's like Lana," girl rejoiced, poking the shadow with finger. The shadow swirled around her hand flying up to her face. It poked her into chubby cheek and Adelina started to laugh. The rest followed the suit and soon she was surrounded by curious shadows that swirled around her, caressing and tickling her.
Azriel watched it fondly. It took just a few minutes and this little girl had him already wrapped around tiny finger. She was so gorgeous that he wished he could have daughter like her someday. "Who is Lana?"
"She's mommy's friend. Sometimes she stays with me when mommy has to work," girl answered giggling and started to chase shadows around the room.
Azriel sat down on the floor with his back against the sofa and pulled knees to his chest to leave enough space for their game, laughing with them. That's how Ivy found them.
"Dinner is ready," she called into the room, stopping once she saw them having good time. Giggling Adelina ran to her mum, squeezed her legs and then ran to the kitchen.
Azriel stood up, pulling wings to his back. "I apologise. We are probably too loud."
"No, not at all. I've never seen her so happy. It takes her quite long to open up to someone new. You must be really good with children."
"Not really," he shoved hands into the pockets, trying to stop the blush spreading on his face, "but I have a little nephew."
"Come," she smiled shyly. "Everything is ready."
Azriel managed to get through door and squeezed in to the small dinning table that was nicely set and full of deliciously looking meals. The pleasant conversation in trio over the meal gave Azriel peace he hadn't felt for ages. When meal was over, he helped to clean up and even stayed until the night fell.
As time to return home was getting closer, he started to feel sadness weighting his chest as a heavy stone. He wished he could freeze the time and just stay in this tiny house, surrounded by these two girls. But he couldn't. They weren't his family and he had to leave at some point.
No one was forcing him to go, yet at nine he assumed it was time to bid them good night and let them rest. He made several rounds above the street and flew home only once all the lights in their windows turned off. That night he felt even more lonely than ever, dreaming about family he didn't have. Seconds before he finally fell asleep, the empty faces of his wife and child mixed with faces of Ivy and Adelina, their merry voices following him to the realm of dreams.
Several days after the dinner he still thought about those two girls living alone in small house on the outskirts of the city. They didn't make any promise of meeting again, yet he wanted to see them. He wasn't sure what led him to such urge. Maybe it was the warmth he felt in their presence. Or maybe it was the happy face of little girl playing with his shadows. It got to the point when he went to the market to buy some fruit and pastries, stopping at toy shop along the way to choose a lovely doll.
Before he could change his mind, he landed in front of the small house with bags in hands and knocked on the door. The house was completely silent. Out of the corner of the eye he noticed that curtain of the window next to door moved slightly. He took a step back, searching the window. The door opened in less than second, smiling Adelina standing on threshold.
"Azriel, you came," she jumped in the place.
"I missed you," he smiled, relieved to see that she was well. "Is your mommy home?"
Girl just shook her head. "Mommy is at work."
Azriel peeked into the house behind her, concerned. "Is anyone with you? Looking after you?"
"No, I'm alone. Lana couldn't stay today."
Azriel dreaded to hear that answer. Squaring his shoulders, he ushered little girl back inside. Velaris was considerably safe city, but it wasn't completely without crimes. "So return inside, angel. If you want, I can stay with you until mommy returns."
Adelina smiled happily and taking his hand she led him in. Azriel closed the door behind him, locking it and headed to the kitchen. Little girl eyed with interest the bags he brought. Azriel gave her a smile and handed her one of them.
"This one is for you. Open it."
Bags and papers rustled while he took out fruit and pastries and put them on counter where he notice a slice of dry bread on a plate. "Angel, what is this?"
"Lana brought me a dinner when she came to tell me that she can't stay," girl frowned as she was trying to get through the paper on her gift.
Azriel wrinkled his nose and opened the fridge. "How about I make you a proper dinner?" There was so little in the fridge, just some basics.
Girl behind him squealed with joy as she finally opened the box and found her new doll. "Is this for me? Really?"
"It's all yours," he turned to her in time to see that adorable face of hers. She was beaming. For four years old she was too mature most of the time and very cleaver girl. Another child that had to skip a childhood phase because of the hardship of life. Azriel felt sorry for her. Getting new toy, she once again behaved like a child of her age, jumping and running around, admiring new doll and clinging to Azriel's leg. He even earned a sweet kiss on cheek. He let her joy settle before he again drew her attention to him.
"Now tell me, sweet girl, what would you like to eat? I can prepare almost everything, I swear," Azriel held her tiny elbows, gently rubbing her arms with thumbs.
Lina pressed finger to her lips, thinking. "I'd like pasta."
"What pasta?"
"Just pasta," she shrugged.
"And what about a sauce?" Girl gave him questioning look. "Okay, so different way.. Do you like tomato, chicken and spinach?"
Adelina nodded hesitantly. "I think I do."
"Fine, so let's go to the market to buy ingredients. Would you go with me?"
"But mommy told me that I have to stay in and wait until she returns.."
"It's okay, I will explain it to her. We will just buy ingredients we need and immediately return home. It won't take too long. We can fly if you want."
"Yay! Yes, please," girl squealed in excitement. "And will we make pasta for mommy, too?"
"Of course, we will."
The shopping experience went even smoother than Azriel imagined. Little Adelina held his hand whole the time or held on to his pants when he needed both hands. She was curiously looking around and as a child had a lot of questions, but she didn't as much as took a step from him. During her first flight she seemed to be tense, but on way back she was more relaxed and even dared to look down on the streets of city below. When they landed at front door of her home, she looked up at him with pure adoration.
Azriel grinned with male's satisfaction and opened door for her.
"Ladies first."
Lina couldn't look happier than at that moment. She ran inside to play with her new doll while Azriel occupied the kitchen. With help of the shadows that peeked into each cabinet and drawer, he easily navigated in the small space. The simple meal was ready in no time. As a dessert, he prepared apple bunnies from the fruit he brought. Adelina called it the best meal in her life and even asked for one more portion.
Azriel's ego basked in so many praises he earned that evening. He prepared plate for Ivy and cleaned all the mess he made. Then he walked over to the sitting room and played with Adelina until it was time for her to go to the bed. He hoped that Ivy would return by the time, but Adelina told him that she usually had to stay and work until late night. Little girl on her own took shower without any protest and went to bed together with her new doll. She was fast asleep before Azriel tucked the blanket around her.
He was crawling down the narrow space of the stairs when front door opened, Ivy stood frozen with hand on handle. They gaped at each other in a shock for a while.
Ivy came to her senses as the first. "Hey.. What are you doing here?" she asked stunned. She didn't seemed to be angry at slightest, only surprised.
Azriel rubbed on the nape of his neck, awkwardly stepping into the corridor. "I'm sorry for intruding your home again and without invitation. I-I.. I brought some fruit and pastries for you and Adelina this afternoon and found her home alone, so I decided to look after her until you return."
"Oh," Ivy recoiled. "So Lana couldn't today, too. I'm so sorry for bothering you. You certainly had something more important to do-"
She started to apologize, but Azriel cut her off. "It's fine. I gladly stayed with her. She's very good kid and we had a lot of fun.. By the way, I hope you won't be angry, but I took her to the market and.. we flew. I swear I was flying slowly and not too high. She was safe whole the time."
Ivy chuckled. "I believe you. Thank you so much."
Azriel noticed big bag with groceries in her hand. "Let me help you. You must be tired. I have used your kitchen and prepared something to eat. We left a portion for you too, if you'd like."
"It's so kind of you. I don't know how to repay you for that." She looked really tired, hardly standing on her feet, so Azriel navigated her to the table and served her the meal he made.
"You don't have to. Take it as a repay for the delicious meal you prepared the last time."
She smiled sadly and picked up one of the apple bunnies. "This is cute."
While she ate, Azriel summarized events of whole afternoon for her. She didn't say much, just smiled sadly. Azriel was cleaning the plates when his shadows tapped on his shoulder. He stopped the water as quiet sobs reached his ears. He swiftly wiped his hands and returned to Ivy. She sat there with face in her hands, crying.
"I'm so sorry for everything, Azriel.. I just met you and you already did so much for us.. I don't know how to repay you for your kindness.." she sobbed, her shoulders trembling.
"As I said before, you don't have to," he assured her, rubbing on her back. "I'd gladly help you more, if you don't mind. Anytime, you have to leave Adelina alone, I can look after her. It's no problem for me. Really."
Before he left that night, they came to a silent agreement. It was quite challenge to persuade Ivy to not feel bad for it, but he was glad he did. He felt at peace to be able to check on them from time to time.
What had started just as a visit once or twice a week, soon turned into every second day and before the Solstice came, Azriel began to visit them daily. He couldn't go a day without them, not only helping to look after Adelina, but also taking them out, doing small repairs at house or just staying with them in, enjoying a peaceful moments. More time he spent with those two lovely girls, more he liked them and soon enough he wished they were his. He fell in love with both of them and his feelings grew with every minute in their presence. However, Ivy seemed to see him only as a friend, so he kept quiet about his feelings, not wanting to break the fragile relationship they built together.
The day before the Solstice he surprised them by decorating their house while they slept. He even brought in a tree that took a good quarter of their sitting room. He tried to convince himself that the joy and tears in their eyes when they saw it, were enough, that it was all he needed to be completely happy. His heart hurt at the thought that this was all he could steal for himself. No matter how he tried, it never could be enough.
As every year, he was invited to the River House to spent holidays with his family. He wanted to celebrate with them as usual, but on the other hand, he wanted to spend the holidays with Ivy and Adelina, too. He even bought them presents a month in advance - that's how much he was looking forward the holidays in their small house. He felt torn. He considered the idea to invite the two of them to the River House, so they could be together. There was only one problem - he didn't want his family to find out about them yet. They were his most guarded and the most treasured secret that he wanted to keep for only himself just a bit longer. But he couldn't decline invitation from his family either without telling them truth.
And so he ended up at the full table of decorated River House. All couples and families sat together, laughing and having a great time, while he felt left out. Of course they were talking with him, asking about his whereabouts in last couple of months, yet he didn't really felt like a part of this chaos. He was missing something. He missed his girls, Ivy and Adelina.
Whole the time he thought only about them - what they were doing, how they were celebrating, what meals Ivy prepared for the dinner. He wished the family dinner and presents exchange was already over, so he could run to give them his presents and to spend with them at least hour or two before it would be time to go to the bed.
The only thing that kept him sitting and smiling at everyone was wine. After the first bottle that he managed to drink while the appetizer was served, he stopped counting. When his family stood up as one man to move to the tree and presents, his cheeks were already burning, his vision was blurry. Cassian noticed his drunken state and chuckling he came to help him.
"What's going on? You usually don't drink so much," he was picking on him.
"You wouldn't understand that," Azriel hiccuped.
"Maybe if you explained it to me, I would understand. Have you found some nice female you are keeping secret from us? Hm?"
Azriel stopped and narrowed eyes on him. He tried to guess him, but then gave up and waved his hand over him. Cassian didn't know anything, he was just trying his luck.
"As mysterious as usual, brother," Cassian laughed and helped him to sit into the armchair by the fire.
The following events merged together. Azriel only registered a few thanks when his family opened his gifts and someone pushed in small box into his hands. The fire crackled in the hearth, sending waves of soothing warmth into the room, all the voices created a pleasant cacophony in his ears.
Azriel's eyelids grew unbearably heavy until he couldn't take it anymore and he needed to close his eyes for a moment. Next time he opened them, clocks in the house were striking eleven. Everyone already went to the bed, the house was silent.
Azriel was still quite drunken as he scrambled to his feet, the pain throbbed in his temples. He didn't mean to fall asleep, he still had presents for the girls to deliver. He stumbled to the front doors, knocking off some vase with flowers on his way. The shadows were trying to tell him something, but he just waved them away, tired.
The cold air bit his face as he dashed to the sky, dangerously swaying from side to side in the air. It was a miracle that he managed to get to Ivy's house without any serious accident. Stumbling to the front door he needed three tries to actually get to them and knock. All the windows were already dark, inside was completely silent. Unhappy that he didn't make it in time, Azriel collapsed on the threshold with shoulder pressed against the cold wood. A puff of steam left his mouth as he sobbed. The most important time of the year and he missed it out.
Suddenly the door opened and he almost fell inside. Ivy stood there in a nightgown, her scared expression replaced by relieve when she saw him.
"You scared me. I heard knock and then some strange sounds and-" she noticed his state as he struggled to get on his feet, traces of tears half frozen on his face. "Oh, Mother! Azriel, are you okay?" She hurried to help him, steadying his swaying form.
"I'm so sorry," he sobbed. "I wanted to be here for Solstice. I have even presents." He reached into a pocket between the worlds to take them out while slurring in between hiccups.
Ivy helped him get to the sitting room and sit on the sofa. She gently took wrapped boxes from him and placed them under the tree.
"You are freezing cold. I'll make you tea." She caressed him, making sure he would be fine while she would make him cup of tea to warm him up.
Azriel's heavy hand landed on her arm, his long fingers locked around her wrist, pulling her closer. With half-lidded, glossy eyes he looked up at her, dreamy smile tugging on the corners of his mouth.
"You are so beautiful and kind and perfect," he slurred in a deep voice, every second word followed by hiccups. "And I love you so much.. Really love you.. Both of you.. You are my everything.. I don't want to live without you two.."
Ivy blinked in surprise, her bottom lip trembling as her blue eyes filled with tears. "Oh, Azriel," she caressed his cold cheek, blushing. "I feel the same way for some time now. I didn't even dare to dream that someone like you could-.. But I-..I love you, too.."
Her voice was so quiet that he wasn't sure he really heard it. He convinced himself that it was just some drunken hallucination and sobbed. "I don't want to destroy our relationship.. I need you.."
"You aren't destroying anything. Quite otherwise."
"I love you," she said more clearly when he gave her a questioning look. In his current state he was kind of cute and definitely more opened than usual.
The sweetest smile spread on his face as her words reached him and he pulled her even closer. His body warmed up within seconds, the usual heat radiating from him. Heart in his chest picked up on speed.
"Angel," he murmured, cupping her face. "I want to kiss you, but I'm too drunken."
"So maybe you could do so in the morning after sleeping it out. What do you think?" she chuckled shyly.
He nodded, scrambling to his feet. Swaying and trying to find balance, he headed to the front door. However, Ivy stopped him, pulling on the back of his sweater.
"I'd prefer you to stay here tonight. I can't possibly let you go out in this state. You could get hurt or freeze to death somewhere."
He looked down at her, blinking to focus and then drew hand down his face when it failed. "I-.. Fine.."
He let Ivy lead him up the stairs. He had a hard time to get to the second floor sober, so in drunken state it was even harder, but with great help of small female and his shadows he finally climbed the last step. Ivy ushered him to her bedroom where he collapsed face down on the bed as long as wide. She carefully tucked him in the blankets.
"I'll stay down on the sofa, so you get good rest, okay?"
He hummed, long sigh of relief leaving him, his eyes already closed. The soft sheets smelled like her, like a meadow of wild flowers and a summer sun, luring him into a deep slumber. He couldn't resist it.
"I'll get you a bigger bed," he murmured seconds before falling asleep.
Ivy smiled gently as she brushed dark strands from his face. "Good night."
She took one warm blanket, checked on her daughter who miraculously slept through all the fuss, and returned to the sitting room. Settling on the sofa she felt something cold swirl around her, gently touching her and tucking blanket around her. Azriel's shadows followed her to make sure she had as much comfort as possible.
"Thank you," she whispered into the dark and fell asleep with smile on lips.
At the dawn Ivy woke up, hearing small noise from the second floor. Sighing she rolled to the her side. Her gaze fell to the nicely wrapped boxes under the tree and she smiled. So after all it wasn't a dream. Azriel really came.
Whole house smelled of pine, small decorations shone in the first rays of winter sun. Now, when Azriel was there too, everything felt festive. Last evening, with Lina they waited for him. He didn't promise to come, yet they expected him to appear at least for few minutes. They both knew very well that he had family to spend this time of year with. Nevertheless, they hoped.
They waited with dinner and opening of presents until last moment, but when it was eight and there was no sign of him, Ivy put food on the plates and they ate alone. Adelina was sad whole the time. Not even new clothes for the Azriel's doll made her smile. Gazing at the gift they prepared for him, they waited until ten in silence. Then Ivy shoved the present into the drawer and they went to the bed. Ivy read a story to her daughter and when girl fell asleep, she retired to her bedroom, but for a world she couldn't fall asleep. She was tossing, worried that maybe something happened to him and he couldn't come.
How surprised she was when all scared she went to search for the source of strange noises and found drunken and crying Azriel curled up at her door. He didn't forget nor ignored them after all. And when he confessed.. Even in his drunken state it was the sweetest thing ever. She couldn't be more happier than at that moment.
Smiling, she got up and walked over to the bookcase. She took out the present for Azriel from the drawer and careful placed it under the tree next to the ones from him. It looked so tiny compared to his gifts that she felt ashamed. She sat there thinking about all kinds of things when the realisation hit her.
Adelina had a habit of climbing into her bed in the morning. Fearing what her daughter could feel finding Azriel sleeping in the bed instead of her mum in her half-asleep state, Ivy rushed up the stairs. The door of Lina's room were opened, the little girl nowhere to be found. Ivy swore under her breath and tiptoed to the door of her bedroom. She silently pushed them open and froze on the spot.
Azriel was lying on his side, softly snoring, curled around the small form of her daughter. The little girl was pressed against his chest with head rested on his biceps. His other arm and one wing were wrapped around her, keeping her warm and protecting her from the fall from bed. They both were fast asleep, smiling softly.
Ivy couldn't believe her eyes. It was the most adorable thing she had ever seen, her chest swelled with warmth and love. Wiping tears, she quietly backed from the room and closed the door. Changing from her nightgown, she set off to the bakery to buy freshly baked bread for the breakfast, dark tendrils of shadows at her heels. The little things followed her since the last evening and she couldn't help but smile at them.
Azriel woke up, his head throbbing. He reached to his temples, realizing where he was and that little Adelina slept next to him. The pain immediately forgotten, he smiled and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. The little girl sighed contentedly but her eyes remained closed.
He vaguely remembered how half-asleep she tugged on his arm to let her into the bed. When he made a space for her, she climbed up without a word and wrapping her small arms around his bigger one, she fell again asleep.
Carefully untangling from the blankets he got up and headed to the bathroom. He splashed cold water on his face and looked in the mirror. He looked as shitty as he felt. He shouldn't have drunk so much wine. Realising what he said in a drunken state, he headed down to look for Ivy. He didn't mean to take back any of the things he said because he meant them, but he needed to apologise for scaring her so late at the night and bothering her.
He squeezed down the narrow staircase at the same moment as front door opened.
"Good morning," Ivy greeted him merrily with steaming paper bag in hands. When she closed the door, the smell of freshly baked bread filled the air. She didn't seem to be angry at all. She gave him a shy smile and hurried to the kitchen. Azriel followed her, getting few pokes from his shadows that returned together with her. He had such hungover that he didn't even notice they were missing.
"I know," he whispered to them quietly.
"Good morning," he rasped, his voice still hoarse from sleep.
Ivy shivered at the sound, masking it by taking down her cloak and cap. "It's so cold outside," she shyly hurried out from the kitchen to hang them.
Azriel waited until she returned, thinking where to start.
"Ivy?" he said hesitantly. She turned to him, giving him all her attention. "I want to apologise for causing you troubles last night. I shouldn't have come in such state. I'm really sorry."
"No, it's fine," she smiled, uncertain.
Azriel was so nervous. His feelings were never accepted for some reason. It was hard to believe that in this case it could be any different, but he couldn't loose them. Looking down at his feet, he continued.
"Also.. I'd like to assure you that I remember everything I said and that I meant every single word. It wasn't just some drunken bullshit. I really.. love you and your daughter. I'm serious. Even if you don't feel the same way, I'd like to.. stay close to you both.. I won't bother you with my feelings anymore, just-.. Allow me to be your friend, please.."
"..silly.."
"Excuse me?" Azriel's gaze shot up.
Ivy stood in front of him, hiding smile in her palm while tears trailed down her cheeks. "If you remember everything you told me last night, then you have to also remember what I told you."
Azriel fished in his memory. He clearly remembered his words, however, everything else was blurred.
"To be honest, I'm not sure what of that was real and what was a dream," he admitted at last.
"Silly.. I told you that I love you. Don't you remember?"
Azriel's eyes widened. He thought that he imagined it all, that his drunken brain played tricks on him. He bridged the distance between them with one long step, sweeping her into his arms. Nuzzling to her hair, he inhaled deeply. Not even the smell of winter could cover her calming scent.
"I do.. I remember, but I thought that it was a dream," he murmured, squeezing her tightly. Her trembling hands fisted his sweater, holding him close.
They stayed like that for a while, then Azriel pulled away slightly. His hazel eyes searched hers. "Is the thing about the kiss true too?"
She nodded without hesitation and he didn't need more. Their lips hardly touched when light steps sounded on the stairs. They immediately jumped from each other and moved to the counter, pretending they were in the middle of preparing the breakfast. They both were fiercely blushing.
"Azriel!" Adelina squealed when she saw him. "You are here!"
She apparently didn't have any recollection of climbing to his bed earlier. Azriel smiled at her and picking her up, squeezed her in tight embrace.
"Good morning, sunshine. Of course I came. I'm sorry I didn't make it last night."
Little girl held him just as firmly. "I missed you."
"Okay, little lady," Ivy interrupted them, emotions swirling in her eyes. "Let's change and wash first. You can't eat like this."
Leading her to the door, Ivy turned and smiled sheepishly at Azriel, her cheeks still bright red. They almost got caught. Azriel could hardly believe this all. His heart hammered in his chest, all the emotions were overwhelming. He needed to busy his hands while his head was processing it all.
Before girls returned, he set the table, cut bread and prepared everything they could possibly need, not forgetting even hot cocoa. Adelina squealed happily as soon as she saw full table and ran to her seat. Azriel pulled out chair for Ivy, gently touching her as he squeezed in, too. They talked about plans for the day while eating when little girl surprised them both.
"Papa, could I get more cocoa?" She pleaded, her big blue eyes on Azriel.
His hand with bread froze on a halfway to his mouth, his breath hitched. His heart squeezed in the sweetest pain, stopping for a second, tears stinging his eyes.
"What..?" Even his voice was strangely hoarse.
Lina's eyes hesitantly skipped between two adults in front of her. "I'd like more cocoa," she repeated in small voice.
Azriel looked at Ivy, silently asking for permission and she nodded encouragingly. Wetting his dry lips, he cleared his throat.
"Sure, you can get more cocoa, but.. How did you call me?" He asked her softly, his voice slightly shaking.
He had to shove his hands under the table to hide the tremor, wiping the sweat into his pants. He hung his gaze on her small mouth, hoping she would repeat the word, dreading the impact it would have on his life. Because if she said it again, there would be no way back. He would selfishly claim this family as his own and he wouldn't let them go, cherishing them until he breathed out for the last time.
"Papa," she said in a small voice.
Azriel groaned, tears rolling down his cheeks. It was the most beautiful word he had ever heard in his long life. Clasping hands over his face he sobbed. His heart was about to explode with the happiness. After years of longing, he finally found family of his own. Finally he had someone to give his whole heart to, but instead of one, he got two hearts back. His shoulders trembled as he sobbed uncontrollably.
"Did I say something bad?" Adelina turned to her mother who cried too.
"No, sweetheart, you did nothing wrong. You just made us very happy," she explained softly and took her mug to refill it.
Adelina slipped down from her chair and stepped to Azriel.
"Pain, pain, go away," she chanted, diligently rubbing his shoulder. He swept her into his arms and sitting her on his lap, he hugged her.
"Thank you, angel," he kissed the crown of her head and nuzzled to her doll-like long hair.
Ivy joined them shortly and put the mug on the table. Azriel pulled her down to his lap and kissed her. There was no better feeling than holding both of his girls, his most precious treasures, in his arms, safely wrapped by his wings. Now they were his to care for and to protect and he swore to Gods that he would make sure they had the best life he could offer them.

First Time Flying
Day 1: Series of Firsts @gwynrielweeksoffical
First time flying with Azriel.
Word Count: 744
Read on AO3
Azriel entered the House of Wind and was met with silence. Cassian and Nesta were no doubt locked away in their room, but he wasnât exactly searching for them.
He cloaked himself in his shadows and walked in the direction of the private library. He stopped, not pushing the door open just yet.
Go inside, his shadows silently urged him.
Azriel ignored them, lingering outside of the door, listening to Gwynâs soft voice. He caught sight of her through the partially opened door. She was reading a book, a smile on her beautiful face.
His gaze darted down to the two small forms cuddled up against her, laughing at whatever Gwyn was reading. Azriel felt warmth fill him at the sight of his mate reading to their twins.
He walked into the room and his daughter immediately squealed in delight. She shot up from the couch and ran over to him.
âHi daddy!â Catrin yelled, clinging to his legs.
Azriel grinned down at his daughter. âHi, Catrin. Were you good today?â He scooped her up into his arms.
She nodded enthusiastically. âI was!â
He winced and pulled his head back to save his eardrums.
Gwyn stood and walked over to them, Uriel staying close to his motherâs side.
Whereas Catrin was more excitable and adventurous than her brother, Uriel was more cautious and observant.
And while both of their kids had a blend of Azrielâs skin tone, only Catrin had his dark hair, hazel eyes, round ears, and wings. Uriel had his motherâs hair color, though a shade darker, freckles on the bridge of his nose, clear teal eyes, and arched ears.
âHello, Shadowsinger,â Gwyn said with a smile. His shadows lounged on his shoulders, content to watch his mate and children.
Azriel returned her smile. âPriestess.â He bent his head to kiss her.
âNo daddy!â Uriel shouted. âMy mommy!â
Azriel couldnât help but chuckle. He glanced down at his son, who was frowning up at him, puffing out his little chest. Even at the young age of three, Uriel was always determined to prove he was an alpha male.
Gwyn gave Azriel a look of amusement as she rubbed the soft swell of her belly.
Catrin bounced in his arms, her wings fluttering. âToday?â she questioned, excitement in her voice.
He looked at Gwyn with a raised eyebrow. âItâs up to mommy.â
âPwease mommy?â Catrin begged. Az found it cute that she couldnât pronounce her Lâs. âCan I go why?â
âFly,â Azriel corrected.
She scrunched her nose. âThatâs what I said daddy!â
He just nodded, not willing to upset her.
Catrin continued to plead with Gwyn. âIâm big now!â
Gwyn smiled. âAre you now?â
Catrin nodded so hard that Azriel worried sheâd break her neck. âIâm this many years now!â She held up three little fingers.
Azriel stayed silent, leaving it up to Gwyn. He knew that she wanted to wait until the kids were at least five before taking them up into the sky, but Catrinâs Illyrian side often prompted her to crave flying.
Gwyn sighed, defeat clear in her eyes. âI suppose it wouldnât hurt anyone.â She looked down at Uriel. âDo you want to go flying too, sweetie?â
Uriel shook his head. âNo mommy.â He wasnât interested in flying, not like his sister.
âCan we go right now? Pwease pwease pwease?â
Azriel smiled. She was tenacious, like her mother. âSure, why not?â
âBye mommy! Bye Yuri!â Since Catrin couldnât say Uriel, she called him Yuri.
âBye,â Uriel said softly.
âHave fun,â Gwyn said. Then she pinned him with a look. âNot too high, Shadowsinger.â
Azriel winked and gave her a devilish smile, delighting in the way she bit her lip. After the twins went to bed, he had plans for his mate.
His shadows swirled around as he took one last, heated glance at Gwyn before going outside.
He took off into the sky.
Catrinâs small wings flapped, trying to mimic what his were doing, though they werenât yet strong enough to hold her weight. Azriel knew that when she was old enough to fly, they would have a hard time keeping her on the ground.
He did little maneuvers in the sky, smiling at the sound of Catrinâs squealing laughter ringing through the air.
All too soon, Azriel landed back on the ground.
âDid you have fun?â he asked.
âAgain daddy!â Catrin exclaimed.
Not able to tell his little girl no, Azriel took off into the sky once again.

Here for You
Azriel x Reader (Zuzu Centered)
Summary: Anon Request: could we get something zuzu centered? we donât get enough of the girls, and it would be so sweet to see az being a girl dad and y/n being a girl mom for a bit đ„č maybe them being super excited to finally have a baby girl, when sheâs really young or something? whatever you thinks best!
Warnings: None
Word Count: 1,076
_________________________________________
âCâmon Zuz! Keep going, youâre almost there,â Azriel shouts from your side.
You canât contain the smile on your face, beaming as your daughter races across the open field on her little legs, kicking the ball with a determined look on her face. Her sleek black hair is twisted into tight plaits courtesy of her father, who had â like all things â studied the intricacies of braiding until he was near perfect. There had been many late nights you and your husband had spent together, letting him practice different hairstyles on you while you read, tucked up as far into his warmth as you could, giving him gentle reminders and praises on his final looks.
Zuzu also has dark streaks of paint on her cheeks, a gift from Uncle Cassian, whoâd also given her a pep talk before her Moonball game had started. Between him, Azriel, and Rhys, you didnât know who was cheering the loudest for your little girl, and your heart is bursting with joy at the pride your family is showing in the matching âZuzu Rulesâ shirts Rhysand had made for their final game.
Malos pouts where sheâs been jostled in Azrielâs arms, on the verge of falling asleep when heâd excitedly begun cheering as Zuzu was passed the ball. Nesta notices at the same time, and is quick to take the babe and soothe her, waving a dismissive hand to Azriel who gives her an apologetic look for a brief moment before returning his gaze to the Moonball game before him.Â
Heâs nearly vibrating with excitement, and youâve had to pull Baz out of the way as his wings flared when one of the children on the other team had stolen the ball from Zuzu.Â
Sheâs certainly come a long way since her first game, where the same thing had happened and sheâd tried to pummel the child into the ground for doing so. You had glared at your husband and his brothers who had all ducked their heads to hide the grins they were biting back. That was their girl.
Even your older sons had stopped their game of playing warrior to come cheer on their sister, their cousins pushing between all of the tall adult legs for a better view.
One of the children in a navy jersey chasing Zuzu towards the goal suddenly trips and falls into the grass with a surprised gasp but Zuzu doesnât take notice. Unfortunately, you do, shooting Baz a warning look that says heâs going to get in trouble when he gets home. Heâs only eight but heâs already learned a multitude of tricks with his shadows, and to an untrained eye they wouldâve thought the child had merely tripped. You knew better than that, and by the way Baz switches sides with Wren so heâs standing further away from you with red cheeks and hunched shoulders, he did too.
Even Knox is intently watching his sister race across the grass. The midnight purple of her jersey brings out the ribbons in her hair, provided by her Auntie Elain and Uncle Lucien, who hadnât been able to make it, as they were visiting Day for a surprise getaway.Â
âCome on baby, come on baby,â you mutter under your breath as she goes. Two children from the opposing team are blocking the way and if she uses her wings again she wonât be able to join the team next season, so you pray to the Mother she doesnât flare those little wings wide and sweep these kids off of their feet.
âYes, Z!â Wren jumps, shouting at his sister as she side-steps the offending players. Heâd taught her that move when Uncle Cassian hadnât been playing very fair in the backyard. Everything sheâs learned about Moonball had been from her brothers and the rest of her family. Sheâs a warrior through and through, tough as nails and never backs down even when she was learning with all of the roughness her brothers and male cousins showed. Asteria hadnât shown interest in the sport, instead she liked playing with her dolls and putting them in poses to draw in her coloring book.
âYou got this, Zuz,â Baz encourages, while Jax claps his tiny hands and chants her name over and over again.
Your entire family holds their breath as she sets herself up to kick the ball into the goal. The child in the goal has a ready stance thatâs startling for that of someone so young. He looks nearly professional, arms spread wide, knees bent, with a determined look in his eye. He and Zuzu had faced off before, and even her brothers had complimented how good he was at the sport.
Zuzu had scored against him this season once. The other time she had the chance, the little boy had blocked her ball from hitting the goal and you almost hadnât stopped the rest of your sons from running out onto the field to defend their sister from the goalie who had gloated more than Cassian when heâd won the annual snowball fight, a smug smile on his face.
Sheâd been more determined than ever, immediately asking her brothers to go out into the yard with the instruction not to go easy on her.
Zuzu cocks her leg back. Thereâs steely determination in her fierce eyes. Her mouth is set in a firm line as she stares down the child like heâs her worst enemy.
And maybe he is.
The entire field is silent as her leg swings forward. The ball goes soaring through the air, looking like a shooting star, and everyone waits.
The child in the goal pushes off of the ground, throwing his body sideways into the path of the ball.
But heâs too late.
Your family erupts in mass of cheers and excitement, storming the field to gather the star player in congratulations and celebratory hugs.Â
Sheâs beaming, grinning like the day you and Azriel had told her that she was going to have a little sister.
Azriel hikes her up on his shoulders, spinning her around as the other parents gather their children and usher them away, but you donât care, so utterly proud of Zuzu for scoring the winning goal of the game.
Her braids flop against her shoulders as she twirls, giggling like a mad woman and hands raised in the air in victory.Â
âI did it! I did it,â she screams.
And you couldnât be more proud.

The Shadowsinger & The Inkbird: Chapter Fourteen
Azriel x Day Court Librarian Reader
Summary: Y/n's clairvoyance is a gift from the Mother, but it feels more like a curse. With the power to gain knowledge through touch alone, Y/n holes herself up in The Alcove and hopes her powers and parentage will remain a secret. But things will change after the Summer Solstice ball and a chance encounter with a certain Shadowsinger.
Warnings: Secrets are revealed, relationships are tested, and the arrival of new guests at the River House make things all the more complicated. Oh and some canon typical violence.
The Shadowsinger & The Inkbird: Masterlist
Masterlist of Masterlists
There was something cold and damp against your forehead, the bitter taste of medicine lingered on your tongue, dry and acrid, and a faint pulsing near the base of your skull.
âSheâs waking up.â Gwynâs voice came to your ears through fifteen feet of water. âYou can hold her hand, if youâd like. She can handle it now.â
A hand slid into yours, palms calloused from hundreds of years spent swinging a sword. Warm and heavy. Golden light pricked behind your eyes like sunlight through thin curtains and you woke up to the sun smiling down on you, red-eyed and weary. Â
âHelion?â His healing touch traveled over you, whisking away any remaining tenderness in your stomach. You whimpered when he wove his fingers through your hair, gently peeling apart any tangles. It felt nice to be touched by him. Safe.
âIâm here.âÂ
âIt hurts,â you murmured, even though you couldnât identify the pain very well. It seemed to exist both within you and outside of you, pressing down on your chest until even breathing felt unnatural. Everything just⊠hurt. Your head, your heart, your throat. Like youâd swallowed a mouthful of hot ash. âIâm so⊠Iâm so tired.âÂ
Again Helion combed your hair back with his fingers and you felt the sore spot on the back of your head prickle when he touched it. The blood had been cleaned, the wound closed, but you could still feel it there like a stamp sinking into your skin. The same way you could feel the stretch of scar tissue over your stomach. A thick, pale line a few inches below your sternum. Â
âYouâre ok, my dear. Rest. I wonât let anything hurt you.âÂ
âThanks Dad,â you whispered, but you were already slipping away. You wouldnât remember what you called him when you woke up again.Â
Helion gritted his teeth and brushed away the stray tears that dripped down your cheeks, then his own.Â
âI wonât let anything hurt you,â he said to the empty air.
The next time you awoke was not so pleasant. There was no caressing hand down your face. No slow murmurs from your father. No warm light blinking in the darkness.Â
There was the banging of doors. Cassianâs alarmed shouts mixing with Rhysand and Morâs, and Feyreâs commands for Nyx to take Velaria upstairs and lock the door behind them.
âDonât come down until I get you, ok sweetie?â The boyâs footsteps were light and quick up the stairs as he calmed a startled Velaria with gentle coos.Â
âGwyn?â You reached across the bed for the priestessâs hand. Her robes looked like they were glowing to your sleep-dazed eyes.Â
Her teal eyes were hard. The grip on her knife tight.Â
âGwyn, whatâs happening?â
âShhhh. Go back to sleep.âÂ
Helion roared and the River House shook down to its foundations. The silky covers stuck to your weak arms, slippery and cool as you gripped Gwynâs arm and forced yourself to stand. Your knees immediately buckled and Gwynâs awaiting arms caught you in a sprawl of heavy limbs.Â
The House trembled once more. The wooden banisters creaked. The faelights that sat on swooping, wrought iron curls blinked on and off, signaling the Houseâs alarm as the floor slipped and slid beneath your feet. Help me! The House seemed to shout.Â
âGwyn.âÂ
âHold onto me.âÂ
You leaned heavily against the priestessâs side, her arm wrapped around your waist, and together you stumbled out the door and into the hallway.Â
You blinked, eyes adjusting to the lamplight just as Cassian flew across the room, crashing into the fireplace mantle in a burst of color that had you turning pale. The glass figurines and picture frames cracked and shattered in a rain of glass. But Cass only grumbled, âThis is what I get for helping,â before bouncing onto his feet and charging back into the foyer where Rhysand, Feyre, Nesta, and Mor stood. Rhysand kept his arm out in front of the two sisters and grabbed Morâs arm before she could step further.Â
âLet them go.â Rhys said, his voice low and deadly. He knew something they didnât. âHelion has a right to this.âÂ
âIt wasnât Azrielâs fault,â Mor seethed.
âDoesnât matter. Iâd do the same if anyone hurt Velaria.âÂ
âWhat the hell does thatââÂ
Helion slammed Azrielâs bloody and bruised body against the wall with a snarl. The shattered vases in the hallway and the blood dripping from Azriel's broken nose clear evidence that you'd stumbled upon this fight a few minutes late.
Helion held a fistful of black leather in one hand and a gleaming sword of pure light angled up just beneath Azrielâs sternum in the other. His skin burned so brightly even Azrielâs shadows had slunk away to seek shelter in the few remaining dark corners of the House.
âYou bastard,â Helion spit out the words like venom.Â
Azriel hung limp and exhausted, wings brushing against the floor. The bruises beneath his eyes and the cut of his cheeks spoke of days spent without sleep. Days spent prowling Velaris for Andrian. Days spent waiting outside your door for you to wake up.Â
âYou think I donât see what game youâre playing? This pathetic pattern of yours?â Helionâs eyes flashed a dangerous yellow.Â
âHelion!â Your voice was weaker than you wanted it to be. âLet him go!â
âItâs not a game,â Azriel said through gritted teeth. âItâs never been a game. Not with her.â âDonât. Lie. To. Me,â Helion snarled. He pulled Azriel off the wall only to slam him back into it. Cracks splintered out like spiderwebs. Dust floated down and landed in Azrielâs hair like snow. âIt wasnât so long ago that you were convinced enough about a mating bond with Elain to invoke a fucking Blood Duel with Lucien Vanserra. Now youâre chasing after Y/nâs skirts like a dog? Looking at her with lovesick eyes as if being near you wonât bring anything but death on her head?âÂ
You went still.
Heâd⊠heâd challenged Elainâs mate to a Blood Duel?
Heâd believed they were mates?
All at once it made sense why Elain and Lucien had disappeared to the Mortal Lands, chased away by a violence that should have ended with either Lucien or Azriel ritualistically buried in the ground. Nothing but a pint of blood and a name to remember them by. All at once it made sense why it had been so long since their family had lived under one roof.Â
Your words shriveled up in your throat and died there.
Azriel stiffened, eyes flashing dangerously.Â
Helion clicked his tongue in disapproval. âYouâre not the only one who hears whispers, Shadowsinger,â he hissed. âFirst it was Mor you pined after for five-hundred years, then Elain, then the priestess. One right after the other like a prize just out of reach.âÂ
Gwyn tensed beside you and your heart tightened in your chest like untempered glass ready to shatter.Â
âGwyn?â You whispered.Â
You had no right to Azriel, no right to know about his past exploits with females, but still it felt like something you should have been told after long nights spent in the priestessâs presence. Months of living under their roof, eating their food, and falling in love without a whisper of warning. The things they must have whispered about when you werenât in the room.Â
Her silence was all you needed to hear. Greasy and rotten.
Azrielâs hands shook the more Helion spoke.Â
âYou like your females broken and vulnerable. You like it when they need you. When you get to swoop in feeling like some grand hero. So you felt you had the right to go after my daughter! And then you were too weak to protect her when the time came? You dared to lay a hand on her are you fucking kidding me?!â
The world froze at those two words. The Inner Circle was shocked into complete silence.Â
You swayed dangerously as the floor tilted beneath your bare feet.Â
Is that what they thought of you? Is that what Azriel thought of you? Broken. Weak. Pathetic. Someone who couldnât handle their own. Someone who had needed saving. An easy target to charm and dazzle. A Librarian whoâd been left alone for so long sheâd throw herself at the first handsome male who smiled in her direction.Â
Azriel stiffened.Â
You were Helionâs daughter. And somehow that made everything worse, because Azriel knew how lonely youâd been as a child and how much losing your mother had nearly destroyed you. Youâd shoved yourself into the Alcove where everything was familiar and safe, and all this time Helion had just stood by and done the bare minimum.Â
Azriel had been holding back his rage â his pain â but he felt it erupt with new passion. Lingering jealousy, that acid that had been building up every time you mentioned Helion or touched the necklace heâd gifted you, added fuel to the fire. Shadows burst out from his hands and ate away at Helionâs magic like a plague.
âDonât you dare,â Azriel growled and spit blood onto the floor by Helion's feet, âYou werenât even here. She could have died on those streets.â His voice was hoarse and on the verge of breaking, âAnd you wouldnât have been there.âÂ
And he might not have been there either.Â
Rhys had held him back, refusing to let go even as Azriel had tried to crawl to you on broken bones. Even as Azriel had screamed for you.Â
Helion's face twisted into something ugly and foreign to you, because deep down he knew the true reason he was so enraged at the Shadowsinger. It was like looking in a mirror. Theyâd failed you in similar ways.Â
âHelion⊠Helion no!â But your father didnât listen.Â
His power shot out in a blaze of light and heat and slammed into Azrielâs chest. His shadows were barely able to soften the blast. Azriel saw you then, shock and horror seeping down the bond along with something that felt a lot like heartbreak. You watched wide-eyed and slack jawed as the wall bowed out and then snapped in two. Azriel was thrown onto the front lawn, a gaping tear left in the House like a knife wound.Â
Helion stepped outside and stalked up to Azriel like a lion out for blood. There was murder and hatred in his eyes.Â
Everyone was shouting again as he raised his sword.Â
You felt a flare of something bright and hot in your chest, like a shot of whiskey or the first bleeding rise of the sun. You stood up on your own, eyes burning with a glassy, gold sheen that had Gwyn stepping away from you with a gasp. You were glowing, pure and clear and strong.Â
Youâd only felt like this twice before. First, when youâd grabbed hold of Henna and stopped hiding who you really were, and then once more at the Palace of Hoof and Leaf mere minutes before Azriel had turned the book to ash. Both moments where your power demanded to be felt. Moments when your emotions turned to magic.Â
âHelion.â Your voice echoed throughout the room and into the wide open space beyond, eerie and calm. So loud. So quiet. Like an aching whisper in pitch black darkness. âLet. Him. Go.â
Helion blinked in surprise with his arms still raised over his head. Inch by inch that blade of bright light faded away with the dying light of a sunset. His eyes cooled and that magic rage left his body. He staggered away from where Azriel lay on the ground.Â
Your hands were trembling, but you forced them to be calm as Azriel got back on his feet, hazel eyes boring into yours. He drank in the sight of you. Your wrapped forearm. The white bandages around your middle peering through your thin nightgown. Your clean hair.Â
The smell of blood was but a distant nightmare, even if he swore he could still feel it on his ruined hands. Slippery and dark.Â
You turned to leave.
âY/n, wait!â Azriel shoved a stunned Helion out of his way, racing back into the House in a blur of darkness. âY/n,â he begged and reached out his hand, âPlease let me explain.âÂ
You froze. The weight of his hand wrapping around your wrist and the rough feel of his scars against your fluttering pulse pinned you to the floor. You felt uncentered â off kilter â and without meaning to, you were thrust into his mind.Â
You felt the way heâd pined after Mor for centuries. Always close by. Waiting. Watching for the moment she might actually look at him and realize what he was willing to become for her. Someone to love and kiss and take to bed. Someone whoâd never have cast her off into that wood. Someone who would do whatever she asked until she was smiling and whole again.Â
You felt the way he looked at Gwyn, like she could be the answer to all his questions. Like she could be the one to hone all his sharp edges with her delicate smile and her creamy skin and dewdrop eyes. Because if she could love him, it might actually mean something. It would mean he was capable of fixing, not just destroying.Â
You⊠you knew the ways heâd imagined Elain. Three sisters for three brothers. Mates. Fate. Love. How heâd imagined touching her. How he had touched her. The thrill of hiding away in dark corners and the soft skin of her fragile neck beneath his lips. The arch of her back. Wood grain beneath his fingers as he pressed her up against a wall and kissed her. How he couldnât imagine wanting anyone else ever again.Â
You felt the acidic contents of your stomach surge and wrenched your hand out of his grasp.Â
Azriel faltered, eyes wide and staring. Something inside of him fractured and broke. You hadnât pulled away from him like that since Summer Solstice back when you were strangers and meant nothing to one another. But even then you hadnât looked at him with this much feeling. This much betrayal.Â
His arm was still outstretched and hanging in the empty air.Â
Tears dotted your eyes, but you forbid them from falling. Not in front of him. Never in front of him.Â
âI am not broken.âÂ
You went back to your room and slammed the door shut.Â
âI thought he liked me,â you murmured pathetically, leaning against Helionâs side. Heâd slid into your room quietly and approached you like a wounded animal ready to scatter.Â
Your father hesitated, fingers caught in hair that reminded him so painfully of Leda â of your mother. Things had not ended well between them, but he could think of her with nothing less than fondness and gratitude. After all, Leda had given birth to you. Brilliant, wonderful, beautiful you.Â
He listened to the House and the way it seemed to be holding its breath. The doors shut a little tighter. The curtains hugged the windows. And across the hall shadows lingered by the door of Azrielâs room, reaching out towards yours but never crossing the threshold. They were held back by their masterâs tight leash.Â
âI know this might come as a surprise after what I did, but I⊠He did like you. He does like you. They all do. How could they not?â
You shook your head slowly. âBut not in the way I want him to. Not in the way I loââ You shut your mouth and sighed bitterly. Your cheeks flushed with warmth and before you knew it you were crying again, leaking tears onto Helionâs bare shoulder and feeling wretched.Â
Azriel curled in on himself, collapsed on the floor like a broken doll with knees pulled up to his chest as he ignored the pulling of his shadows.Â
She needs you. She needs you. She needs you. They repeated over and over again, yanking on his leathers and strands of ebony black hair. Helion had left for one of the guest bedrooms upstairs after you cried yourself to sleep. Now was Azrielâs chance to beg for your forgiveness. To explain himself. To hope.
She needs you.
Azriel shrugged them off, scattering their disembodied voices with a wave of his gloved hand. He was back to wearing them.Â
I am the last thing she needs.
âLucienâs found one of Bethsevahâs descendants.âÂ
Gwyn stood by the doorway, pale skin and blue robes outlined by the mountainâs red walls. The priestess kept her hands behind her back, wringing them in a nervous twist of bitten fingernails, and waited for you to finally look up from your notes.Â
You didnât like spending time at the House. You hated the way everyoneâs attention shifted to you whenever you entered a room; the look of tight, empathetic smiles and knowing glances filling their eyes. It wasnât that they were trying to be unkind, but you knew they whispered about the power youâd displayed. About your status as Helionâs bastard daughter. About the absolute state that Azriel was in.Â
This morning, when youâd left your room for Cagniv Library, Azriel had been waiting, filling his bedroom door frame with a hauntingly tortured look in his eyes.Â
âY/n, pleaseââÂ
Youâd left without a second glance in his direction, footsteps hurried and head bowed down. His shadows had followed you to the front steps of the house, but no further and you couldnât help but feel a weight in your chest thinking about how Azriel had looked. Heâd started wearing the gloves again.Â
Bethsevahâs name rang through the air like a jolt of electricity. After thousands of years, her name still held a strength that demanded to be felt. The book was gone. Whatever magic Azriel had been forced to perform had swept it away to the Continent, and Rhys and Feyre had been wracked with worry and preparations ever since. Favors called in. Threats made. Weapons forged. Bodies armed. At any point they might be called away to the Continent, or forced to reckon with a Death God at their door.Â
Youâd helped in your own way by digging through your notes on mating bonds and the manuscript that was becoming more useful each day.Â
Thanatos and the Bone Carver, one and the same, and mated to Bethsevah Mordeigh. Magic that wasnât the same, but perfectly complementary. Magic that worked as a lock and a key.Â
You were made to ruin me.
Your initial theory, the one youâd shared with Azriel in that cramped apartment at the Alcove, had turned out to be true. Bethsevah, and Bethsevah alone as Thanatosâs mate, had possessed the ability to split him from his power and lock him away, and because his magic was cut from the same kind as his siblings, Beth had been able to do the same with Stryga and Koschei. Her blood, her genetic connection to that magic, would be the only thing capable of releasing the power in the lake.Â
All magic could trace itself back to a biological underpinning.Â
You were made to ruin me.
The memory was burned behind your sleepless eyes and haunted your dreams, but sometimes when you stopped concentrating so hard on the harsh angles that made up the Bone Carverâs face, you caught him transforming. Black eyes turned to brandy. His reed thin body filled out and grew strong. Wings sprouted from his back. His pale skin turned tan and scarred.
You were made to ruin me, Y/n. Azriel would say, and youâd pretend that the look of utter love and adoration in his eyes was real.Â
âWhen will they be arriving?âÂ
Gwyn sighed in relief. Youâd been so quiet the last few days. âTomorrow.âÂ
Mor bit her cherry red lips, glancing at Rhys and Feyre with worry in her eyes as they all stood in a row ready to greet their guests. Rhys was schooling his features into one of careful neutrality, but Mor had known him for centuries. Sheâd seen him through his awkward teenage years when his skin wasnât so perfect and his body grew like a weed in Spring. Back when his temper wasnât so honed and his ego undeserved. She knew when he was agitated. The squaring of his shoulders. The set of his eyes. The faintest twitch of his left ear.Â
What a fucking mess this all was. If he thought about it too hard it gave him a raging headache.Â
Azriel and Y/n were mates, although Y/n didnât know and no one knew how to tell her, especially after Azriel had stabbed her through the chest under Andrianâs influence. Helion had nearly killed Az. Azriel had nearly killed Lucien. And if anyone ever told Lucien about Y/n being his half-sister, he was sure Lucien would try and kill Azriel too⊠again. Andâ oh FUCK. Helion didnât know Lucien was his son. Y/n didnât Lucien was her half-brother. Fuck fuck FUCK. Cauldron boil me.
Rhysand rubbed his temples and closed his eyes.Â
Azriel stood motionless, nothing but the minor sway of his wings and the masked look of anguish in his eyes to hint that he was still reeling from that day in the market square. He couldnât stop glancing over at where you stood between Mor and Cassian, every inch of your skin covered and a forcefully blank look on your face.
Truth Teller was no longer strapped to his thigh. His shadows had returned, but with hesitance, and Rhys couldnât recall the last time heâd seen Azriel eat something. Every family meal that you didnât attend, Azriel would just stare at your empty seat and flinch at the sound of knives dragging through meat.
Feyre winced at the onslaught of Rhysandâs thoughts. Do we even want to attempt to fix any of that right now?
Feyre darling, where would we even begin?
At least Helionâs moved to the House of Wind. Feyre offered it as a small consolation. Took me a while to convince him of that.
Rhys gritted his teeth. And he will stay on that fucking mountain.
Lucien had gone his entire life not knowing about Helion precisely because when he stood next to his brothers he blended in. There was just enough similarity there in the silhouette of their faces and their overwhelmingly bright red hair, that no one had ever batted an eye at the seventh son of Autumn. But put Lucien and Helion side by side and a keen eye would make out the same strong slope of their noses, the same dimples on their cheeks when they smiled, and the way their brow bones hung over deep set eyes.
You possessed such an eye â an eye for details and specifics. So when Lucien Vanserra walked through the front doors with the setting sun splashing his frame with fire and light, Elain glowing and beautiful beside him, you knew immediately who he was.Â
Fuuuuccccckkkkkk. Cassian groaned. Nesta, she knows.Â
Stop it. Thereâs no way she figured it out that quickly. Nesta said. Then she actually looked at you. Your mouth was open in a round âoâ and your face had gone pale. Oh for fuckâs sake. Really?
Your gaze was locked on Lucien as he walked up to Rhysand and shook his hand.Â
âLucien, welcome back to the Night Court. Itâs been too long.âÂ
His golden eye whirred, moving up and down the line and lingering first on Azriel. His full lips flattened, freckled nose twitching with thinly veiled distaste. âNot long enough.â But his many years spent as emissary wiped the emotion from his face quickly and he moved on, greeting everyone with a detached kindness.Â
âLuc.â The High Lady grinned, finally tugging a genuine smile from Lucien Vanserraâs lips.Â
âHey Feyre.âÂ
She wrapped him in her arms, closing her eyes and giving him a hearty squeeze.Â
âItâs good to see you again.âÂ
âYou too.âÂ
There was a somber familiarity there, and you got the sense that Feyre was the only one Lucien truly felt connected to. Whatever history he had with the other members of the Inner Circle was tolerable at best.
You finally caught his eye â the one strange face heâd never seen before. He easily towered above you, built with Helionâs strong legs and resplendent in a deep green riding cloak and cream-colored trousers that accentuated the tinge of color in his skin and his mismatched eyes.Â
He tipped his head to the side, his long braid falling over his shoulder, and smiled softly. âYou must be the Librarian that got roped into all of this madness.â Yes. Because thatâs all you were to him â some unnamed female from the Day Court. An unfortunate victim of circumstance. âY/n Halwynn.âÂ
You blinked, surprised to hear him speak your name so casually when you were reeling over the fact that standing in front of you was another one of Helionâs children. Another bastard that perhaps should never have been. Your half-brother.
âThe one and the same.âÂ
Lucien evaluated the shrewd set of your eyes and the fit of your clothes over straightened shoulders and found that, at first glance, he quite liked you. You were of the bookish variety â that much was evident in the small novels dragging down your pockets and the smudged inkstains on your fingertips â but you held yourself in front of him well. You looked kind, if not skittish.Â
âLucien Vanserra.â He held out his hand and you regarded it with hesitance before accepting it.Â
âI know the name.â
âIt is a rather infamous last name.âÂ
âBit of an infamous first name too.âÂ
Lucien smiled a little wider. Yes. He quite liked you.Â
Elain hugged her sisters in turn, breathing in their familiar scent and gripping them tightly. Her time in the Human Lands had served her well. Gone were the days of frail bones and heavy eyes always looking out sunny windows. Her skin was flush with color, her hands strong and calloused, and her knees pleasantly bruised after months spent laboring in the fields outside Vassa and Jurianâs manor. She smelled like soil and flowers. She was as lovely as everyone had always described her. The second Archeron sister whoâd been born with an unnatural beauty even before turning fae.Â
Your eyes dropped to the floor so you wouldnât have to see what Azriel did when she greeted him. But it didnât matter. They avoided one another carefully, and Azriel kept looking at you, begging you to lift up your eyes so he could offer you a smile.Â
A word.Â
A glance.Â
Anything.
Bethsevahâs descendant appeared next, willful and stunning in her own way as she waited by the door. Her frizzy grey hair was held away from her face with a strap of leather, stormcloud eyes staring out unflinchingly from a time-worn face. Everything about her was grey from her hair to her clothes and the iron jewelry that hung from her neck and wrists. Cassian sometimes forgot how humans wore their age so openly, and how this woman in particular seemed to brandish it like a weapon.Â
âIone Morgana.â Her voice was deep and hardy. Her eyes narrowed at everyone now that the familiar introductions had finished. âThatâs my name and itâs the name my family has carried as long as we can remember. Although the redhead seems to believe otherwise. I am old, as you creatures can very well see, and I am tired. My parents are long gone. My sons dead. My sisters dead too. Now,â she banged her walking stick on the ground, although she hadnât used it when walking up the steps, âWhich one of you will see me to my room?â Her words came out more as a command than a question.Â
Rhys tipped his head to the side, his surprise evident on his face. âYouâre a very bold woman. Do you not comprehend who youâre standing in front of? My wife in particular?âÂ
âBoldness comes with age.â She stuck her nose in the air like a wolf sniffing for a bunny, âSomething youâd do well to learn.âÂ
An amused smile grew on Rhysandâs face. âIâm over five hundred years old.âÂ
âYou certainly donât act like it, standing all crooked like a tryhard.âÂ
Cassian coughed into his fist and Mor snickered.Â
âI could kill you.âÂ
Rhys!
Relax, my love, Iâm just curious how she will react.Â
The woman â Ione â hardly reacted at all. In fact, she almost smiled. âTime can kill me. Sickness can kill me. At this point a stiff wind could knock me down and break my back. Youâre not special.â She whacked her walking stick again, harder this time. âNow. My room?â
Nesta raised and then dipped her head in silent acknowledgement and together they disappeared into the east wing of the house looking like two grey chess pieces moving over the tiles.Â
âWonderful isnât she?â Elain commented with a fond look in her eyes. She was Ioneâs favorite by far.
Jurian came in last, sweat beading his brow as he dragged a huge steel cage up the steps, and Lucien and Elainâs faces turned solemn. Vassa flitted inside her prison â a cage within a cage so that she couldnât snap at Jurianâs hands when he got too close. His eyes were bloodshot, knuckles bruised and bloody.Â
Your breath hitched in your throat. Youâd imagined the firebird as something majestic. Youâd imagined feathers dipped from the richest dyes trailing light from their ends like red, green, and blue sparklers. Instead, her eyes were the only vibrant feature about her, and they were sharp from hunger.Â
âWhatâs happened to her?â Cassian breathed. When he stepped forward, Vassa lunged from her perch, screeching when she clashed with the steel grate. Her claws tore at the metal but never broke through the magic Lucien had placed there.Â
Jurian whispered words of comfort and love through the metal, and in time, Vassa seemed to settle.Â
âIt started last week,â Lucien said through clenched teeth, âThe day Koschei got his hands on the book, Vassa started going mad. She canât sleep, not in her human form or as a firebird, and she keeps⊠hungering for something she canât name. The day we found Ione, sheâŠâÂ
âShe tried to kill me.â Jurian raised his hands and slid his sleeves down. Claw marks, barely healed, ran jagged down his arms. âLetâs not mince words, Lucien.â He grimaced. âKoscheiâs trying to call her back to the lake, but sheâs fighting it with everything she has.â He looked back at Vassa, eyes dull and tired. She screeched once again and feathers fell from her body before curling up into blackened husks on the floor. You could just make out the sections of skin where sheâd ripped out her own feathers, raw and dotted pink with blood. âI suggest you give us a room far away from everyone else.âÂ
