i am not in a Positive Mood atm and so i will be picking a bone with disney because there is one song that has frustrated me since the day i heard it and i vow here and now that one day i will rewrite it and that song is My Once Upon A Time from descendants 3

for context, the song comes right after all of mal's closest friends and her fiance have just been turned to stone. unless she can find a way to turn them back, they are - for all intents and purposes - dead, essentially. and, as she says in the song, its her fault. i dont 100% agree with that, but its not the bit i want to pick at

no, what id like to rant about is the fact that the whole song - the whole song - is her talking about how she needs to fix it because its not how she wants to be remembered. what?! im sorry, her friends have been turned to stone and shes concerned about whether she'll be portrayed as a hero in history books? what the fuck.

allow me to point to a song that achieved exactly what mouat shouldve: the next right thing, from frozen 2. in this song, anna learns her sister is dead, because olaf (who's life relies on elsa) dies in her arms. anna's song shows how she picks herself back up, not for herself but because she has people relying on her who need her. because its the right thing to do. not because she wants to be seen as a saviour, but because she wants to save the lives of everyone still in danger. shes already lost her sister, she doesnt want to lose her kingdom, her people, too.

tnrt in frozen 2 was an impactful and emotional moment. mouat in d3 showed mal brushing off the fact her friends were gone and instead focused on her reputation. and i get it - i get that the whole point of the descendants trilogy was that you get to write your own story, and that nobody is wholly good or bad, and that youre in control of your own decisions and whether they help or hurt - but this should be a moment of pure emotion for mal as she recognises how her own actions have led to the loss of her friends, but that she has to carry on if she ever wants a chance to save them; to save everyone. it should not be focused on her being good for the sake of reputation

and, to add to this, im fully aware that throughout the three movies, we see how mal values other people's perception of her, especially so at the start of d2, and then again at the start of d3 both as her role as future queen, and when she doesnt tell her isle friends that it was her call to keep the barrier closed. shes afraid of how theyll see her, yes, but we had the character growth during d2 where mal became more confident about not fitting with the perfect princess look (represented by her transformation into the dragon, and continued use of such magic despite it coming from her evil mother, as well as her dress changing from auradonion colours to her signature purple), so any insecurities there shouldve been wrapped up. and her lies in d3 were, ultimately, for the good of everyone, and only temporary. the barrier had to stay closed until they could figure out a way for it to be safe for everyone. if she had let them bring down the barrier too soon and a villain had caused chaos, then that would ruin the chances of the barrier ever coming down forever. and if she had told her friends - specifically evie - that it was her call, then she knew that evie would convince her to change her mind. but changing her mind at that point was not for the greater good, therefore she lied. as much as a small amount of it was for her reputation among her friends, it was also for the good of auradon and the isle

therefore i refuse to believe that muoat shouldve been focused wholly on her reputation. we know mal cares so much about her friends and about ben, so why didnt the song dive into that? why were we not looking at her guilt, or her determination to carry on so that she could save her loved ones and her home? why, instead, did we focus so hard on the way she wants to be remembered for her heroics and good deeds?

i also understand that mal may be compartmentalising to an extent, by ignoring her own grief for her friends and instead focusing her attention elsewhere to keep herself going. she very clearly does have insecurities about her decisions and her role in auradon, so it would make sense to distract herself with that rather than letting herself break down over her friends. if this was what they intended, though, i think it was poorly done. at least, i certainly wouldnt have brushed past it quite so nonchalantly. mal hardly seemed to care that her friends had been turned to stone after the first - what - two lines of the song? and even then all she says is that she deserves it. she deserves it?? like it had just been a shove in the playground or something, and not an attack on her loved ones - one that, remember, could very well result in her losing them forever

quite literally, her only lines in the song about losing her friends are: "here you are alone and you deserve it // your friends have turned to stone and thats on you" and that is it. everything else is about her story being written, or about serving a cause, or her reputation not being linked to her parents'

i really do not like this song. i havent watched d3 for over a year, so i do apologise if ive missed/forgotten important context, but from everything i remember and listening to the song itself, i do not believe it does the moment justice. i want to rewrite it one day, ive no idea if i ever will or how, but i dont like it the way it is.

Is Love From the Stars Hawkins family still going to adopt Uma? Are Lia going to be friends with Uma like in cannon?

I'm actually very glad you asked because I've been considering this and... someone does get adopted by the Hawkins family whether they like it or not, but it's not Uma.

Setting LftS after D3 means Uma's back with her crew - her own family. She's not got a lot of interest in reaching out to the Hawkins family, or befriending Lia, like she did in Rewrite the Stars. She's content with her crew and the life they're settling into in Auradon.

There is, however, a prominent VK who's still working through her f*cked-up family dynamics, who we've already seen drawn parallels to Lia. And since I set this post-D3 (and get to work with the character I think the D3 writers wanted her to be but failed to get), I get to explore Mal as a not-so-terrible character who's still learning and changing.

Basically what I'm saying is I'm like 98-percent sure that the Hawkins family is going to adopt Mal in LftS. Uma's pretty happy where she is, but Mal's got a lot of change coming which I'm really excited to explore.

Though that's not to say that Lia and Uma will not be friends, because they will be. They just won't be sisters.

What are your honest thoughts on pro Bal/ Mal blogs who usually don’t like Audrey?

Pro Mal and anti-Audrey blogs? Avoid them like the plague, really. Because honestly, its not worth debating with them. They always gonna think Mal's a good person even after drugging someone and trying to spell that person in D2 and treating them and everyone like shit, insisting its because of Mal's mom and isle past, but then proceed to ignore that Audrey's grandma treated her like shit to the point it finally contributed to why she became Queen of Mean, because these blogs are like the movies: if you dare go against Mal, your the worst.

Pro-Bal blogs? Meh. It depends. Because I do know that some just ship them based on D1 and rewrite them onwards. Which is basically a mood with ignoring canon and imagining a universe where Bal was a good ship. But the ones that ship them based on D2 and D3 where Mal treats Ben like shit and Ben's the one in the wrong somehow??? Again, avoid them like the plague. Have not got time for people who think somehow Mal treating Ben like shit is romantic, let alone the ones who think Ben was in the wrong for reacting out of panic to Mal trying to spell him again in D2 (because yes, those people exist).

I think Audrey says it more since Mal just isn’t used to saying it. But of course they show it. With little things. Audrey making sure Mal has enough art supplies. She sends Mal pictures of sights around the city. Mal will tell Audrey “Stay safe.” I think Mal will show up if Audrey is working or studying with fresh fruit she cut herself because “Knives are cool.” Or like smoothies she made.

15) who isn’t afraid to embarrass the other in public?

They would so try to one up each other. Audrey uses words while Mal will be more physical. Audrey will usually say something flirty and charming. While Mal will shout “CATCH ME!” and pounce on Audrey. 

16) who gives the other cringeworthy pet names?

Audrey gives Mal cringeworthy pet names. Benny Boo and Benny Bear were pretty cringe. In my Mal/Audrey fic, Audrey calls Mal Aubergine because I thought it would be the funniest thing. Evie was like “Aww. French is so romantic.” And Mal was like “Do I even want to know?”

i don't go here when it comes to Descendants but with all the stuff I'm reading it makes me wonder why they didn't just embrace all the evil/shady shit Mal did and just run with her being a villain, and make the protagonist one of the other girls instead...

Because that would mean actually acknowledging Mal's wrongdoings 😝 I totally thought that Evie was going to be the lead.

One of my moots @disneyfan50 has a fanfiction that goes with the Villain!Mal aspect (spoiler but she does get a true redemption) it's essentially a rewrite of D3 with a twist-.

Mal D3 motor bike redesign number...5? damn ive redesigned her main look alot

stuff i kept-the color pallet but i heavily symplified it and took away alot of the stuff that made the design so busy, while also adding just enough to make the design intersting becuase while Mal's canon gear is super busy and has so much going on, its also suuuper bland, like stupid bland, thats one of the problems with the canon designs because while theres SO MUCH going on, the motorcross gear is also SUPER bland, like theres alot of...nothing with shapes and colors and thats it. i also let mal keep her lil flame boots but made them less heel and more of a basic platform boot that isnt so stupid high. i also kept her canon shirt she wears under the vest cuz thats not something that i ever had complaints with, its just a shirt.

my big thing for this design was-tight t-shirt and big ol pants with bit belt. im really happy with the silouette alone and really like the scales/flames/embers on mal's pants :3 i also wanted to make her a PROPER ass motorbike jacket instead of a vest and sleeves, motor bike jackets are meant to freaking protect the rider, her arms being visible defeats the fucking purpose of the damned jacket!

but-yeah, i wanted this mal to be fucking READY, no big clunky shoes/heels, no tight pants with a stupid zipper on the buttm and proper gloves, i had the idea of Mal having a braid-which i still really like so just imagine Mal wearing her hair in a braid for the d3 adventure. but yeah, Mal's worn dresses her last two big battles and whenever i redesign any of hte outfits-i have a possible rewrite in mind where Maleficent is the big bad whose mind controlling Audrey and Mal knows this so she wants to be READY and wants comfy pants instead of a skirt or super tight pants that squeak when she walks.

📘: Ok, so I know I’ve talked about this before but Carlos should not have gotten over his fear of dogs so quickly! I know its for the sake of time in the movie but it’s just not plausible. This plot hole is the whole reason I created one of my OCs. I want Carlos to go through the process of actually getting over the abuse Cruella put him through. This would probably be in my Descendants rewrite but it just irks me that it took him like 3 seconds to stop being afraid of Dude.

Somebody made a post about the similarities between Mal and Audrey and I was gonna reblog it ranting about how D3 robbed us but then it turned into me basically rewriting D3 and I’d feel bad dumping this word vomit on somebody else so here we go:

D3 would have been So Much Better if it had been about Mal and Audrey teaming up after Audrey was mind controlled by Maleficent's scepter.

The two start off awkwardly working together cause they made up at the end of D1 (not that Descendants like. Cares about it's own canon or anything.) but they still don't really mesh, there's too much conflict in how they were raised and how they think they should do things. Then it's the classic enemies to friends where they realize the other often makes good points and come to see how similar they are.

Queen of Mean becomes a duet about Audrey struggling with her grandmother's expectations and trying to find her place now that she's not The Future High Queen while Mal (who's whole arc in D2 was learning that she doesn't need to replace her mother's expectations with anyone else's, she can just be herself. Again not that Disney cares.) reassures her that even if it's "mean" to dismiss the expectations of the adult in your life, sometimes to be happy and safe you gotta disappoint your family a little bit.

Leah is the one arguing that the barrier should be closed forever (cause her granddaughter was possessed by an evil fairy gasp the horror) but Mal never buys that because it's 100% OOC for her (Descendants? Caring about characterization? Nah.) Instead they need to take down Maleficent and the rest of the escaped villains before Queen Leah can convince the rest of the royals to close the barrier, which is how the sea three get involved.

There's more thinly-veiled child abuse in the form of Leah wanting to lock Audrey away “for her own good” since Audrey disagrees with closing the barrier and Clearly that means she’s still under Maleficent’s influence. Meanwhile Maleficent puts Mal to sleep as punishment for defying her in D1, telling her when she wakes up Maleficent can rule Auradon and Mal will be grounded for real until she learns to see that her mother only wants what’s best for her. Ben goes full beast and Maleficent mocks him that now her silly daughter won't have any more delusions about true love, with him being such a hideous monster.

Instead of Mal and Uma learning to work together Night Falls is about Audrey realizing that she actually works really well with the VKs and they all in turn work well with her. There's some gay subtext between Audrey and Uma. Audrey is cheering and jumping and in general being more excited than she’s ever been and when the VKs all kind of eye her in confusion she shyly admits that she’s never really had any friends who had her back like that, since she was a princess and that’s all anybody saw, and they tell her that on the isle people respect you based on what you do, not what your parents did.

They de-furry Ben who kisses Mal awake and the final battle goes exactly the same way only with Maleficent instead of Audrey as the villain, and there's a scene where Maleficent sends up a wall of thorns and Audrey is almost compelled to prick her finger on one but Ben tackles her out of the way. They have a quick conversation where Audrey tries to apologize for only seeing Ben for his political ties when they were dating at the same time as Ben tries to apologize for how he dumped her and they both laugh it off and agree that they're glad they can be real friends now.

Instead of being turned to stone all the VKs are like. IDK trapped behind the previously-mentioned wall of thorns and have to get through before they can swoop in at the last second and join in the fight. Maybe Evie brews a potion that disintegrates the vines so they can get through? And idk how everyone helps but they do, dammit, you can’t make a movie with a core theme of teamwork and togetherness and then not have the climax involve those themes, Disney.

Instead of Audrey falling asleep it’s Aurora and Phillip who Maleficent put under a special curse cause she obviously hates them both, and since they are each others’ true loves they can’t wake up. Hadies comes through and there’s a tearful conversation between Aurora and her parents where she apologizes, they reassure her she isn’t to blame, blah blah, there’s some talk of how they both only want what’s best for her and since Aurora wasn’t raised to be a queen she struggles with it, which is why she took a back seat and let her mother mostly take over Audrey’s life, but she can see she was wrong and should have been louder about how much she loves her daughter. Meanwhile, Hades looks at Mal with a sad, thoughtful look on his face.

Instead of Hades walking away calmly and Mal stopping him in the hallway, he’s shackled alongside Maleficent, who he turns to and says “I think I learned something today. Did you?” Aaaaaand the ending pretty much goes the same way, only instead of the rotten four excitedly running towards the Isle to reunite with their parents it’s a thoughtful, somber moment of them realizing that even though their parents were wrong and hurt them they were doing it out of love, and now they all need to try and learn from each other and grow a new, healthy relationship built on mutual understanding. (This is still a Disney movie, after all.)

The last shot isn’t of the rotten four running for the isle, but Cruella, Jafar and the Evil Queen running for Auradon and awkwardly embracing their children. Hades swaggers up, hugs Mal. Maleficent lingers in the background until Mal approaches her. Maleficent says “You really are happy here, aren’t you?” Mal says yes and they hug, both of them teary-eyed. Ben gets the stank eye from Both of Mal’s parents. Dance sequence, implied Harry/Uma, gay subtext between Jay and Gil. Mal admits that she still has No Idea how this whole being queen thing works and Audrey says then she’s lucky she has a friend who can teach her, and the two share a hug. Yaaaaaay happy ending. Roll credits.

I don’t think Mal is controlling

The only time she really tells people what to do is when they’re on the plot mission and she’s their de facto leader. The only time she outright yelled at the other three was when Ben got kidnapped on their watch. For most of the latter half of the first film Ben was giving her a secret test of character (which she passed) so he had the upper hand in that situation. He rightly gets mad at her during the picnic whe she tries to amnesia him. She leaves because she’s mad at herself and rightly feels guilty about what she did. And on the ride back he gives her an earful about her and Uma being not so different. She shuts up and listens. When she thinks Ben dumped her for Uma she’s willing to let him be. She didn’t come up with the island closure in d3. The adults did. She got railroaded by her compulsive desire to please who she considers authority figures. She takes responsibility for her missteps and never blames anyone else for it. To me she is not controlling

For point of reference let’s compare her to Audrey. When Ben wanted to talk with her (I fully believe he was going to dump her) she cut him off with some drivel about a dress fitting. After did I mention instead of outright asking him what’s going on she indulge in petty psychological warfare and snogged Chad. Going to d3. She stole the sceptre and crown. And then attempted to extort Ben by saying she’ll reverse the sleeping curse if he marries her. He turns her down (obviously). And in payback she completely rewrites his physiology by turning him into a beast and sets about turning people to stone. All because she, yet again, didn’t get what she wanted.

TL;DR: Mal isn’t controlling. More often then not she’s the one being controlled and canon Audrey is, like I’ve been saying for ages, what people believe fanon Mal is.

so, obviously, my canon for ben is super divergent in regards to the starting point of d3 ( and i’m still in the midst of a lore rewrite for desc., which i will hopefully finish soon ). 

for one, in my canon, ben and audrey were never in love with each other, and they dated each other to get the pressure off of each other about dating. also, my ben apologised to audrey about the break-up of “did i mention” after ben and mal’s first date ( when the love spell got taken away by the enchanted lake ) and they managed to joke together about ben’s terrible singing and how audrey should have known it wasn’t naturally him because ben doesn’t sing. 

second, i already have my whole isle plot underway ( with the villains now moved to a different island, ben now fixing the isle while yeeting kids away three at a time ), and, thus, the plot of d3 ( where this is apparently the FIRST day they’ve brought over new vks ) doesn’t sit well with me or my canon. although, this would make more sense in regards to the acceptance of bringing the barrier down on the isle ( since none of the major villains are there in my canon ), but also in my canon, most of the people of auradon still want the barrier up. it’s not a quick and easy decision where mal i mean ben can just decide to bring it down. 

thus, d3 just... can’t be canon for this blog at all. i will be writing my alternate d3 au ( where ben decides to work together with hades to get him out and maybe do some more stuff with my assassination plotline, or maybe have audrey being controlled by the scepter, like she is in canon. )
