I've read a decent number of SteveTony fics and I wanted to give an indecent amount of love back to the writers who put out such gawrjus pieces. The theme for this list is "SOFT" in capital letters because it's not your average erectile-dysfunction soft but some real silk-scarf soft shit. "There's an App for That" by Annie D (scaramouche) (@no-gorms) - I know you're looking at me and saying, aight look Carsonian, whatchu takin me for? You think I'm some greenhorn mark to put down a flag for SteveTony witout cracking Annie D's stash three times whole? Well, to that I raise: my glass. Cuz samesies. But truuuuust me, this fic is worth the re-read. It is a stroke of genuine AU brilliance that doesn't get the hype it deserves (a billion kudos of hype pls!). Super solid set-up, refreshingly quick lines, the kind of easygoing falling together that is just jazzy to relish. This fic is like a date with an almond huddled inside. Sweet and mushy but with a surprisingly solid bite at its core. Summary goes:

Steve Rogers is a great physical therapist who works with sick kids. Tony Stark is a damaged biotech engineering genius who really wants to be one of the good guys.

"we pick ourselves undone" by laramara (@commandersteverogers) - Another old-but-gold fic. Hang on, read the summary first:

And then I re-read it and life was okay again. Tee El Dee Arr: I want to give this fic a smooch on the mouth and a sincere insurance plan.

"for better or for worse" by earliebirb (@earliebirb) - This is the fic you re-read when you want to remember why you're into Steve/Tony. It's iddy, it's tender, it's achey but beyond all a that, it's SOFT. Soft like whipped cream. Soft like a vanilla ice cream milkshake. Soft like Tony's tush and Steve's tits. R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Summary goes:

Sitting quietly like this, Tony can almost pretend that nothing has happened, that this is just another normal day of Steve waking up in bed next to him. Married and in love with no threat of divorce looming on the horizon. Of course, that is before he catches sight of Steve’s bereft ring finger. He wonders how long it has been since Steve’s ring finger is empty. He wonders if he should start taking off his own, too. He wonders if Steve wants him to take it off.

Also, I read this WAYYYY back when, and put it down in my list as "sitcom/hallmark set up with stevetony charm". So if you're into that, you know what to do. "One Last Christmas" by Captain_Panda - Speakin' of Xmas miracles, here's another fic that is super soft and set during the Christmas holiday period. And YEAH I'll admit it FINE FINE. I'm deffo playing favourites here....but as we all know, I am a Captain_Panda fan first 😤❗, a SteveTony fic enthusiast second. Respect!!! Summary goes:

You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch. The year is 2012. Cuddly-as-a-cactus Tony Stark is throwing a Christmas party for his fellow Avengers. It's all going really well--except for Tony, who is quietly succumbing to his own demons.

You see how the summary says "cuddly-as-a-cactus"? Well, it don't matter because the fic will cuddle you anyway. Tony gets cuddles, we get cuddles, the world gets a cuddle. It's all cuddles in here and you best believe I'm weeping at the slumber party. In this fic, the world is soft and rough-edged and love is worth losing for. It's beautiful. Gawly I'm weeping again. Last time I read this fic, I wrote this in my comment and it still holds true.

Babushka-core Donnie is my all time favorite like- I wanna wrap him in woolen cloaks and give him beets. He is wonderful

I also like the shape language on all of them :D Leo is really sharp and pointy which matches her verbally sharp and sarcastic personality. Both Donnie and Mikey are very rounded, with Mikey having a little bit of pointies to him. Very good for showing just how tired they both are of everything, and Mikey's pointies are juust enough to make him appear very angry-tired (like- he is very much done with it all). And Raph, oh my God Raph. He is sharp, he is round, and he is s q u a r e. He's this cocktail of angry and sad and tired and frustrated and sorry and I love him to bits and bobbles. And his main shape is a square; he's the most stable. But everything else about him screams that he just isn't. He is anything but stable. It's a ploy, an act. He's trying to be as stable as he possibly can because Splinter is breaking them all apart and that hurts like a son of a gun. Anyways. Sorry if this floods your askbox with an absolute WALL of text, but I seriously adore your AU and will actively murder for all of them

(Also just a quick add on but if memory serves April is also very round and very sharp, kinda in-between Mikey & Leo with sharpies. And I love that. Title: Cross the Jaded Stars

Fun fact! The name itself is full of references! "Cross" saying "Hey, this is a swap where things are switched up or 'crossed'.". "Jaded" has two parts to it, one: It's a more grim and 'jaded' world than canon and two, our MC is the swapped J! "Stars" also has two bits but one of them connects with the previous word, it's a reference to Ad Astra which is what I started with for MD fandom and J(ae) and S (for Jaded Stars) are the two leads for this story.

Solver Strains: There are four strains of Solver Drone in Jaded Stars rather than Ad Astra's two. Two of these are the Ad Astra Strains (winged murder demon and teleporter...aka Uzi and Doll) and the other two belong to the amazing @mephiles97 (you guys should check them and their stories out. They're incredible). C and D strains are a marksman and illusionist strain.

There are Hybrid strains too! If a Solver couple has a kid, their kid will get aspects of both their parent's strains. They will have one strain that is dominant compared to the others. If a child has two parents that are the same Strain, that Strain is amplified (ex: a Strain AA will have absolutely MASSIVE wings and a much bigger tail). Diluted Strains are also a thing. They will have lesser versions of the Pure strains (ex: a Strain a will have either tail or wings but not both. Whereas as Strain A will have both.)

Disassembly Drones:

The Disassemblers all have special 'gifts' that were given to them to protect them.

R: Siren Song- able to 'charm' her victims with her voice. Think like a Trojan virus.

E: Shifting Camouflage-able to shapeshift into Workers whose cores she has eaten. She then takes on some of their traits. (Ex: Taking the form of Luke will give her a strength boost, while taking the form of Alice will increase her speed). The effect looks like Mystique from X-Men.

S: Magnetic Discharge- Able to cause any and all electronics within a radius around him to shut down, a Worker in this radius will begin to slowly lose control of their limbs and become lethargic, eventually passing out on the ground and 'sleep' in drugged stupor.

30. What was their highest point in Shadowbringers? Their lowest? What caused it?

He has 2 really similarily high points! my cheating ass. but first was when he first split the light over lakeland and saw the wonder in Lyna’s expression. very something CAN give moment and he really likes to be like I can fix that for people he likes. The second is typical but it’s after the dying gasp and he sees g’raha is alive and they won. indescribable joy and relief for everything and everything having been worth it.

His lowest point is also preddy usual, post-crown of the immaculate when norvrandt is closed forever because the wol frew up and graha was hostage somewhere and it’s all gone to shitttt. He hated a lot of things about it, hated how big of a fuss everyone made over him, hated how he’d hesitated to push graha for answers, hated e-s’ strange fixation on him so that nobody else was a part of the scales, and he very much thought it’d be an option to steal g’raha’s idea and re-eat the light, and throw himself in the rift to explode. he hated not knowing what to do for a second there.

26. Do they suffer any traumas from any of their adventures? How do you foresee this affecting them going forward?

OK that boy USUALLY wicks off most trauma like water on a duck he does not think his adventuring or being the wol as a burden or hardship at all. he mostly thinks it’s just living and he has fun most of the time. and when he wasn’t having fun his denial-of-self-frozen-in-time-alienated-from-life thing did actually shield him from absorbing a lot of shocks, and then generally just having confidence in himself and others and constant curiosity parried the rest. He kills with little remorse, takes very little personally, and needs to run something through the world’s most secret mental maze to feel guilt. He doesn’t have the tendency to turn helplessness into self-loathing because he frankly thinks and feels it’s not his business to do so. things like: finding the waking sands massacred, having to kill edda, the bloody banquet, haurchefant and ysayle dying, seeing the mass of bodies in the garlean labs in ala mhigo, etc. that have made him colder and more ruthless in some contexts and changed his approach to some things (like becoming less passive), or temporarily made him lose direction (i.e. waking sands massacre) but it honestly hasn’t affected him nor his disposition in a traumatic sense that much. He’s largely remained the same at the core and doesn’t jump at shadows, hasn’t grown to distrust, still rarely gets angry, and isn’t prone to getting vortexed into his own thoughts.

He also is somewhat self-conscious about being au ra, because he didn’t like standing out and people do have prejudices. That’s a sort of trauma? He doesn’t hate himself or his body by any means, but he doesn’t like people’s perceptions of him.

The most traumatic thing that happened really was zenos bodyjacking him. the violation and loss of autonomy was pretty sickening to him and from someone he still ESSENTIALLY considered a stranger. He has little experience with things fucking with him to that extent as the sword swings the other way for once, so he has not dealt with it. he was like I’m good 👍 *throws up* I’m good 👍 Aether sickness (wants to disintegrate his own flesh for the next few days) (regresses completely on the progress he’s made over the years wrt nonsexual physical intimacy and vulnerability)

I maginary Friend - where you/character has an imaginary friend since childhood but as they grow up, the "friend" vanished without a trace and someway in the future, they met the exact "friend" again but they are real...

J ewel - where some people are born with gemstone in their chest, it's their core. They are considered as messengers of god taking the form of a human being to monitor the human realm but in reality, they are simply a "normal human being" with god's blessing and once time is up...they will return to the gods, leaving behind their gemstone as proof of their existence...

K ingdom - Where you/character are members of the royal family, either your own cinderella story or you are a prince/princess were arranged to marry another royal blood (Could be angst too if it's a love triangle)

L etters - a system where the magazine company will pair you up with a stranger who also seek for a companion to communicate with while remaining anonymous, becoming pen pals. As time goes on, feelings change and now you want to meet your pen pal in person for the first time...

M ind-Reader - where you/character were born with an ability to read minds considering this isn't an ability that most people are born with, they are seen as the outcast/the freak due to the fears of them being non-human. They may or may not need to touch to read the mind of a person

N eighbors - in the near future, you/character decide to move in an apartment complex to start your independent life as a working citizen but then they suddenly start having feelings for their neighbor next door...

O racle - where you/character are born with the ability to foretell the future (or have precognition abilities), or in other word, a third eye/god's eye

The Man-from-the-Railroad is an enigmatic, impeccably tailored, charcoal-suited figure, black hair dusted with salt-and-pepper, and a gleaming white tiger-like smile.

His origins are unknown, his true purpose and motives are unknown.

What is known, however, is that he is charming, cunning, from the Railroad, and while some might consder it up for debate is certainly not the Devil. He is something else; which is to say, worse, and real.

For RP purposes, here is a rundown of his character and powers so you can know what to expect. All of this applies to his canon (aka DEFAULT) setting, and can/may be tweaked for AUs on a case-by-case basis.

NOTE: Most things I have pulled either from canonical instances or “word of God” per the writer(s) of the podcast. Some things I have extrapolated, due to his brief appearances, and others I have inserted from my own bullshit. I still try to stick to the core aspects of his character as seen in canon; and he is subject to change should more material become available on new episodes of the podcast.

PERSONALITY:

The Railroad Man is, above all, charming, seemingly affable, effortlessly confident, and stopping him from doing what he wants is about as easy as stopping a speeding train. He has the air and appearance of unnerving perfection, as though he was manifested into being clad in his signature pinstripe suit; but it’s every part of his appearance, from his perfectly-coifed hair, to his perfectly cut thin beard, to his unnervingly straight, bright teeth, down to his polished leather shoes--the sort of which you could never afford. Something about him is just... not quite human... it is cold, bright, unbearably real.

He delights in style and class and has a flair for the dramatic. However, he is a stickler for rules--that is, the Old Rules of magic and honor and deals: If you bring harm upon him and his own, you owe him; if he does you a favor, you owe him, and he will come to collect at a time of his choosing.

He also revels in death and blood as it pertains to the railroad (worldwide), and since at least the 1880s (though very likely earlier than that) he has contributed to pr*son pipelines that provided hard labor to build hundreds of thousands of miles of tracks worldwide (over 100,000 miles in the United States alone).

They saw the land split by iron tongues. They saw men work to pull up driving spikes and laying rail. they saw the avarice and greed and the ever-growing power of the railroad in this man's eyes.

Blood, as it turns out, and the lives given in his name and/or the name of the Railroad, allows him to travel as he pleases, and the more bodies worked to death, the better. To say he has a cheerfully callous disregard for human life is a vast understatement. He is decidedly not human, and considers himself better, superior, to them--even to the point that this can become a blind spot where he underestimates human opponents, though fighting against him will always come at a great cost.

His only redeeming qualities are his apparent ambivalence on things when he can get his way, his charm (although smug), and his adherence to rules. He is not unwilling to work out a deal, and in fact, would prefer to do so even if he has the power to get what he wants by sheer force alone.

He is a man of class and taste, with an airy arrogance that shows itself when his patience wears thin. Just don’t inconvenience him too much--he is not afraid to massacre hundreds to get what he wants, or to shed blood as he turns to smiling anger.

POWERS/ABILITIES/WEAKNESSES:

- Rapid, near instant healing of his body and clothes (blood-based) even from catastrophic injury. He can be killed if cut off from his healing source, provided the blow is a fatal one

- Immense strength/stamina-- can rip out a person’s throat with his bare hand, can also withstand a shotgun blast from close range and remain on his feet

- Teleportation over vast distances, provided he is within a dozen miles of a working railway; he uses working rails as ‘tunnels’ through utter darkness from place to place

- Shapeshifting-- Per Steve, he could be The Railroad Ma’am if he wanted; I have decided he could be pretty much any shape and has such control over his physical form (clothes included)

- Shapeshifting/Illusiory magic-- This passage from episode 25, Siege of Pleasant Evenings, explains it best:

And then as if to answer her unspoken query, the Railroad Man’s body flickered and changed. He seemed to grow taller, and then shorter, he seemed to distort into impossible forms and faces, and collapsed back into the well-dressed fiend in the charcoal suit. In one flickering moment, and dark-skinned, wrought with muscles, his back misshapen by a slab of scars; in his hand hung a heavy hammer. Another shift, and he was a woman cradling her dead husband’s head in her lap, his body crushed by stones. another flicker and he was a burning town, billowing black smoke into the trees, the heat and burning stench of men dying ripe on the air, for but a moment before he flickered again, and he was a salt and pepper playboy in a fine hand-tailored suit.

Other visions flickered across the eyes of those who saw him there, each one a custom-made image of pain and loss and violation.

He grinned up at her, stark and feral, like a wolf with a mouth full of your firstborn. “Do not mourn these poor souls, Miss Walker, for they have all fallen short of the glory of their god—be it the one who takes their tithe or the one who signs their paycheck. They look to both for salvation and find naught but throats like sepulchers and feet quick to shed blood.”

- Blood magic-- His blood and blood shed for the railroad are the/a source of his power. However, like other creatures of the Dark, he can be cut off from his exposed healing source (a pool of blood) if he has already been injured and ONLY if he has been sufficiently caught off guard. Blood shed in his name can cover wards, spells, sigils, and the more blood, the more control he will have

- Creation of Hollow thralls-- By getting folks to agree to work for the Railroad, and giving them his black business card, he can call upon them--through some corrupting magic, their minds will empty and he can command them to do as he wishes. Sometimes that will distort their bodies, sometimes not, but it will always lead to their eventual mindless and monstrous death

- Compulsion of obedience/mild hypnosis-- through the sound of his voice, the touch of his hand, through the act of truly looking into his eyes and Seeing who and what he really is

- Heightened senses-- He can smell the air and taste the earth; he is attuned to the ground in which rails have been staked and to the lives affected, changed. He can sense power and life and death and the stories and names of the people there. He can and will kneel and taste dirt, and he can and will sniff the air like a hound to find the threads of the stories he wishes to learn

- Names and Property Lines-- It is important that he is apparently nameless, as names in Alt Appalachia have power; his being without a name means power cannot be claimed over him in this way. Additionally, ownership of property is particularly important in this world-- wards, charms, barriers on a person’s land can be weakened or rendered void if that ownership changes. The more blood shed by TRM on the Walkers’ land, for instance, and spilled over their protective wards, meant the land would slowly but surely become his. It would follow, then, that a stand could be made against him with sufficient magical defense if you had your own little plot and a legal deed with your name on it--as long as you can keep him from sending waves of dying bodies over the property line

MISC:

- When he dies, a bright light bursts through his eyes and mouth and the terrifying sound of a train will rumble past before he and any carnage vanish. Death for him is not at all permanent

- He likes making stupid train pun jokes on occasion but they are subtle... ish

- He is probably around 100 years old or more by the 1930s

- While rather fae-like in the way he operates, he is familiar with human culture and language and all that sort of thing
