BLOG 4: Gift of Beauty
Beck et al. (2018) defines the ‘gift of beauty’ as how interpretation should have the power to instill the desire to sense the beauty in their surroundings. It should be more than simply seeing something as beautiful; instead acting as kindling for an inner desire to truly study and appreciate the history and beauty on a deeper level. This is where I believe nature interpretation through the various forms of arts is vital. Many people may never see Mount Everest in person or witness the Northern Stars, but through visual arts, they can still connect with those places.
This past summer I visited the Whyte Museum in Banff, Alberta. Inside was their summer exhibition of paintings that J.H.E Macdonald made back in the 1900s of Lake O’Hara. Beside them were similar paintings made in the 2000s by Robert Munn and Patty Cucman, who retraced Macdonald’s steps to find his paint sites. Through their artwork and dedication, between the two paintings we can see how much of the landscape had changed or stayed the same overtime (Whyte Museum 2024). Seeing how the sizes of glaciers changed and where trees had fallen reinforced my belief of how important awareness is in order to conserve the environment around us for future generations.
Nature is often a large source of inspiration for artists in all shapes and forms. While I’m not very talented in capturing landscapes on paper and canvases, I find joy in composing and taking pictures of the environment around me. Photography has become my artistic way of memorializing the scenes I see around me, and sharing those images is one of the many ways I interpret nature to others. One of my favorite shots is a series of pictures of Mount Rundle. The mountain stands the same as it has for years, and the stars above are the same that people many years before us may have seen as well. It offers a glimpse into the vastness of the world around us and how much history each area– urbanized or suburban– holds. Through these photographs, I hope to offer viewers a similar experience, one that will compel them to look at nature a little closer than before.
Art, no matter the medium, gives us a way to convey the ‘gift of beauty’. The past and the present can be captured to hopefully inspire future generations to seek out connections with the environment around them. Visual arts pose as both a record and a call to action. In the present year, temperatures and other indicators of climate change increase every year. The scenery around us might not be the same in 50 or 100 years, but through artistic mediums we can share the beauty and importance of preservation. Overall, I believe that the ‘gift of beauty’ holds more power than most know or acknowledge.

Omega Radio’s 50 Years Of Hip-Hop. When the ‘Brentwood Era’ started, I had the dial on WBLS, one of New York City’s hip-hop / rap stations. It not only signified the first-ever genre I’d pay close attention to, but also signified the beginning of personal cassette dubbing.
For a few years, I’d record as much as possible off to the right of the dial, then later on Hot 97 and Kiss FM. I’d capture Kid Capri, Kool DJ Red Alert, Funkmaster Flex, and Ed Lover, Dr. Dre, and T-Money of Yo! MTV Raps. Running concurrently was In Living Color, a rap-centric die-laughing comedy show that introduced us to the Wayans Brothers, Homey The Clown, Fire Marshall Bill, The Homeboy Shopping Network, and more. My formative years listening to hip-hop / rap lasted as long from middle school to graduating senior year. There’s no shortage of mostly positive memories in Brentwood, in thanks to all of my cassette dubs from that era.
I returned to hip-hop / rap when I discovered WUSB a few years later and stumbled upon one of their shows, Ghetto Radio, who showed me a more underground side of things. Street FM, Eminent Audio, and The Basement practically changed my life because they introduced me to sampling culture, forever opening up a new world in getting to know more about myself. As soon as I became a Stony Brook student, I inquired about joining the station. Now, I became a dee-jay and gave back to our listeners the same way WUSB gave to me. It wasn’t until my second run at the station (Winter 2013) when I started Omega Radio and took my show more seriously.
For 11 years, we’ve taken every chance we get to play hip-hop / rap. Our shows started when we did a five-hour bonus broadcast to usher in a new year: classic Seventies’ vinyl classics on New Year’s Eve, then three hours of the rough stuff on New Year’s. Since then, we paid it forward by delivering all-time legends (The Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac), more golden-era cuts (EPMD, A Tribe Called Quest, Monie Love), the Eighties (Kool Moe D, MC Shan, Eric B & Rakim, classic old-school moments (Whodini, Sugar Hill Records, Afrika Bambaata), and even white-label underground releases (Lo-Down Click, Erule, Brother Arthur). Let’s not forget the ladies of the game, either (Queen Latifah, Monie Love, MC Lyte, and Yo-Yo to name a few).
Later on, we introduced deluxe editions of our shows consisting of golden-era legends still doing their thing (KRS-One, Onyx, Dres of Black Sheep), backpack artists (Jedi Mind Tricks, R.A. The Rugged Man, the Griselda camp), beat tapes (Fuzzoscope, All These Fingers), and newer artists (clipping., Danny Brown, Obnox, Dabrye). We also made some legend specific tributes for Public Enemy, N.W.A. (edited for FCC quality-control), and The Wu-Tang Clan, which happened to be Omega’s most popular show to date. As long as it isn’t Kanye West or TekashiSixNine, we’re good.
The good news? There’s no sign of up stopping. We’ll continuously re-visit our golden-era finds until they’re depleted, and may even consider re-introducing our white-label bonus shows. And we’ll still play our new, current, and relevant hip-hop, rap, and backpacker finds on our deluxe shows.
Found below is each and every hip-hop / rap broadcast Omega WUSB has broadcast up until this point. We urge you to check them all out. Want to re-visit an era with the most creative freedom? Any artists you missed out on? Trying to find a one-hit wonder you want to make a legend out of? No worries. We have you covered.
Here’s to fifty more years of hip-hop - and you can all thank DJ Kool Herc for that.

The Kissing Booth (2018, Vince Marcello)
19/11/2023
The Kissing Booth is a 2018 film directed by Vince Marcello, based on the novel of the same name by Beth Reekles. The film stars actors Joey King, Jacob Elordi, Joel Courtney and Molly Ringwald.
The Kissing Booth was released on Netflix on May 11, 2018. Despite receiving largely negative reviews from critics, who considered the plot and themes to be stereotypical and misogynistic, the film was called a commercial success by Netflix thanks to the great spectator consumption.
In June 2014, Vince Marcello was hired to write the film adaptation of Beth Reekles' young adult novel, The Kissing Booth, originally published on Wattpad. In November 2016, Netflix's purchase of the rights to the film was announced, with Marcello directing the script. In January 2017, Joey King and Molly Ringwald signed to star in the film.
Filming took place in Los Angeles, California and Cape Town, South Africa between January and April 2017.
The film was released on May 11, 2018 on Netflix. Calling the film a huge success for the service, CCO Ted Sarandos called the film "one of the most watched films in the country and perhaps the world."
On the website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 18% based on 11 reviews, an average rating of 4.12/10, and a critic consensus that reads "The Kissing Booth uses every rom-com cliché in its book with little care to achieve real feeling."
IndieWire's Kate Erland gave the film a grade of "D", adding that "Unfortunately, the high school rom-com is a sexist, regressive look at relationships that highlights the genre's worst impulses." Ani Bundel of NBCNews criticized the film's "problematic stereotyping of masculinity and relationships" and lack of original ideas.
Ted Sarandos, CCO of Netflix affirmed the film's success as a "very popular original film" for the streaming service. Factors that have been cited as reasons for The Kissing Booth's success among audiences include the popularity of the original novel on Wattpad, the relative lack of original romantic comedies on the platform, and the publicity of actors King and Elordi's off-screen relationship during the production of the film.
There is a quote from the film The Sound of Music (1965) and from Braveheart (1995).
The protagonist gets drunk at a party for teenagers and starts dancing suggestively on a table like in the film 10 Things I Hate About You (1999).
The declaration of love speech at the ball is an homage to the film Notting Hill (1999).
The film Black Swan (2010) is also mentioned.
In the prom scene, during "Memory Lane", the song Don't You (Forget About Me) by Simple Minds is heard in the background. The song was written for the film Breakfast Club (1985) and appears in both the beginning and the end. Furthermore, among the protagonists of Breakfast Club appears Molly Ringwald who in the 1985 film plays Claire Standish, while in the 2018 film she plays Sara Flynn, Noah and Lee's mother.
The sequel, titled The Kissing Booth 2, was released on July 24, 2020 on Netflix.

hi
Among Us[c] is a 2018 online multiplayer social deduction game developed and published by American game studio Innersloth. The game was inspired by the party game Mafia and the science fiction horror film The Thing.[10] The game allows for cross-platform play, first released on iOS and Android devices in June 2018 and on Windows later that year in November. The game was then ported to the Nintendo Switch in December 2020 and on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S in December 2021. While the game was initially released in 2018 to little mainstream attention, it received a massive influx of popularity in 2020 due to many well-known Twitch streamers and YouTubers playing it, and due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A virtual reality adaptation, Among Us VR, was released on November 10th, 2022.
Among Us takes place in space-themed settings where players are colorful armless cartoon astronauts. Each player takes on one of two roles: most are Crewmates, but a small number play Impostors.[d] Crewmates work to complete assigned tasks in the game while identifying and voting out suspected Impostors (which appear identical to Crewmates) by means of social deduction, while Impostors have the objective of killing the Crewmates.
Among Us experienced a significant surge in playership in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic due to popularization by YouTube and Twitch content creators, and received favorable reviews from critics on account of its fun and entertaining gameplay. The game and its stylized characters have also been the subject of various internet memes.
Gameplay
In this gameplay screenshot of the original map, The Skeld, the white Impostor has killed the blue Crewmate. White's vision of the pink player has been partially obscured by the wall. Any player, including the killer, can report the dead body and trigger a meeting.
Among Us is a multiplayer game for four to fifteen players.[12] Up to three players are randomly[13] and secretly chosen to be the Impostor(s) each round. As of 2021, four playable maps are available, a spaceship called "The Skeld", an office building called "MIRA HQ", a planet base called "Polus",[14] or "The Airship", a setting from Innersloth's Henry Stickmin series.[15][16]The Crewmates can win the game one of two ways; either by completing all assigned tasks or by ejecting all Impostors. Impostors can likewise win in two ways; either by killing or ejecting all Crewmates,[e] or by sabotaging a critical system on the map (provided the Crewmates do not resolve it in time).[f][14][17][18][19] At the start of the game, Crewmates are assigned "tasks" to complete around the map in the form of minigames, minipuzzles, and simple toggles, mostly consisting of maintenance work on vital systems such as fixing wires and downloading data.[20] Impostors cannot complete tasks, but may pretend to perform "fake" tasks to feign appearance as legitimate Crewmates, Impostors, however, can perform sabotages, ranging from minor (such as disabling lights, making Crewmates blind) to critical (such as disabling oxygen generators), requiring immediate counteraction by Crewmates to prevent their deaths. Impostors may also enter and traverse ventilation ducts (commonly known as "venting"), and kill nearby Crewmates. To help Crewmates identify Impostors, there are various surveillance systems on each map, such as security cameras on The Skeld,[21] a doorlog system with sensors in MIRA HQ,[22] and a vitals indicator in Polus that shows the living status of all players.[14] In addition, certain "visual tasks" provide animated cues, such as scanning oneself in the Skeld's medbay. As Impostors cannot perform tasks, Crewmates can use visual tasks to confirm their identity to nearby Crewmates.[23]
Any living player may call a group meeting by reporting a dead body, or by pressing an Emergency Meeting button.[g][19][24][25] During meetings, players discuss — via the in-game text chat or an external voice chat application such as Discord[26][27][28] — who they believe to be Impostors based on available witness testimonies, with Impostors lying to hide their identity or falsely accusing other players. Impostors can be identified beyond reasonable doubt if they are seen venting or killing a Crewmate, but ultimately players must weigh the veracity or value of each other's statements. Players then vote for who they believe is an Impostor, if a plurality vote is obtained, the player who received the most votes is "ejected" from the game.[20][19] Players who are killed or ejected become ghosts, which can still perform tasks (Crewmates) or sabotages (Impostors) but are otherwise unable to be seen by or interact with living players. Effectively spectators, ghosts may see and pass through walls, follow players or other ghosts and chat with other ghosts.
A November 2021 update added additional specialized roles to the game: Crewmates can also be Engineers, Scientists, or Guardian Angels. Engineers can traverse vents like Impostors, albeit to a limited capacity. Scientists can check vitals at any time to see if any player has been killed recently. Ghosts of Crewmates can become Guardian Angels, which can temporarily protect living players from being killed. Impostors likewise can be Shapeshifters, allowing them to temporarily morph into other players and assume their color and appearance.
An alternative Hide and Seek gamemode was added in December 2022. There are no meetings or ejections, and a single Impostor (whose identity is known to the Crewmates) attempts to kill all Crewmates within a fixed countdown timer. Crewmates must hide or flee from the Impostor and can complete tasks to roll down the timer, as well as enter vents for a brief time to hide from Impostors. Crewmates are also given a display showing their proximity to an Impostor as well as the number of remaining Crewmates.[29]
Prior to each game, various options can be adjusted to customize aspects of gameplay, such as player movement speed, the allowed number of emergency meetings, number of tasks and visual tasks,[30] or whether or not an Impostor is revealed after being voted off, allowing participants to manually balance the game's settings to their desires.[31] Players may modify their own appearances with cosmetics, including skins, hats, visors and pets,[32][33] some of which are purchasable as microtransactions.

My formative years listening to hip-hop / rap lasted as long from middle school to graduating senior year. There's no shortage of mostly positive memories in Brentwood, in thanks to all of my cassette dubs from that era.
It wasn't until my second run at the station (Winter 2013) when I started Omega Radio and took my show more seriously.
For 11 years, we've taken every chance we get to play hip-hop / rap. Our shows started when we did a five-hour bonus broadcast to usher in a new year: classic Seventies' vinyl classics on New Year’s Eve, then three hours of the rough stuff on New Year’s. Let's not forget the ladies of the game, either (Queen Latifah, Monie Love, MC Lyte, and Yo-Yo to name a few).
As long as it isn't Kanye West or TekashiSixNine, we're good.
The good news? There’s no sign of up stopping. We'll continuously re-visit our golden-era finds until they’re depleted, and may even consider re-introducing our white-label bonus shows.
Here's to fifty more years of hip-hop - and you can all thank DJ Kool Herc for that.

3 is the third studio album by Japanese math rock band Tricot. It was released on May 17, 2017 in Japan by the band's own label Bakuretsu Records.[1] The album was released on the same day by Big Scary Monsters Recording Company in the United Kingdom and by Topshelf Records in the United States.[1]
Critical reception[edit]
Patrick St. Michel of The Japan Times wrote that 3 showcases Tricot's "ability to strike a balance between complex instrumentation and sudden emotional flourishes."[6] Phil Witmerwrote of Vice opined that "what makes 3 and the rest of Tricot's music transcend the 'experimental' label is a transparent, pop-derived emotional core", while noting 3 to be the band's "heaviest, most challenging album".[7] Chris DeVille of Stereogum described the album's music as "intricate and noodly" but played with "a frantic energy and melodic directness worthy of the Bangles."[1]
AllMusic critic John D. Buchanan found that Tricot, while not innovative, are nonetheless "very good, and in a crowded marketplace they do manage to bring something unique to the table", citing their ability to "infuse their challenging avant-rock with a real pop sensibility".[2]

How does one express non-romantic attraction??
Like I'm making a list of hot pkmn trainers but I'm not attracted to them in the crush/romantic/sexual sense. I think it's like... Aesthetic attraction? But I don't know how to express it :(
I'm just like "awooga hot person they r so sexy mwah mwah" but I'm not attracted to them in a crush/rom/sx kinda way!!! And obviously people misinterpret what I mean because of the language I'm using :(
How the heck do ppl verbalize those kinds of feelings properly ( TTⁿTT ) /genq

Hey yalls, guess who wrote a Danny Phantom one-shot (4k words) that I'm extremely proud of!!! Even if ya ain't into DP, I'd appreciate if you read it & dropped a kudos and commented, because I'm honestly in love with this so much!!!!
Focuses on a confrontation between Danny and Wesley Weston involving Danny's secret identity woooo~
Warning for; panic attacks, descriptions of inhuman appearances (Eldritch!Danny my beloved), & mentions of death!
It's the longest fic I've written to date (I thought a multichapter WIP I wrote in 2018 was longer. I was wrong. That was only 3.5k), and I'm thrilled at the outcome!!
I'm the kind of person who enjoys their own writing (and forgets what I've written after a few days), so when I read it over pre-posting, I was smiling and giggling the whole time. I even screamed from excitement at it (I was on call, and my friends gotta hear me freaking out as I read my own writing XD)!
So, yeah. I really hope you enjoy, because I sure as hell did!

I just discovered «Ridgeside Village» (a Stardew Valley mod) and oh my gods it looks so good!!! The mod adds so much to explore, both new areas and new villagers!!!
Plus, it's compatible with Stardew Valley Expanded (Expanded edits the existing valley for the most part, while Ridgeside Village adds a whole new map outside of Pelican Town)!!!
(If y'all like SDV Expanded, or mods that do similar things, please check out Ridgeside Village if you haven't already!!!)

It's kinda sad to know a good handful of people who've played Stardew Valley haven't played (or heard of) Harvest Moon. Maybe it's just a generational thing, but whenever I've gotten my friends into SDV, I always ask if they know Harvest Moon first. Literally always no.
ANYWAYS if you like Stardew Valley, please check out the Story Of Seasons line (the new name for Harvest Moon games), the Harvest Moon games before DS, or Harvest Moon A New Beginning (3DS)
OR if you like the fighting in SDV as well as the farming bits, I've heard the Rune Factory series is pretty good :D

My #1 post of 2022
Sometimes I wish I could love in the way others could.
To look at someone and just know. To feel the warmth and joy, and desire to be with someone forever.
But my feeling of love comes in different forms.
Sitting outside and playing my ukulele, while the squirrels and chipmunks watch, and the birds chirp along.
The tickle of eyelashes blinking against cheeks, and the fuzzy giggles that brew inside.
Telling someone a secret which you're sure they would never speak to you again over, only for them to tell you it's okay, and that they still care about you.
A stray (or just sassy) cat letting you pet them, no matter how brief the moment may be.
Walking around a night-fallen city with your friend, illuminated by the neon signs, and high on life.
Doodling something that turns out even a little better than you were expecting, brightening up the rest of your day.
Reading a story that overwhelms you with so many feelings that you have to scream, because the world deserves to know how you feel.
Maybe I can't feel love in the way others might. I think that's alright, though, because I notice all the other ways I feel love. And I think I love that even more.

Showcase: Alabama Department of Archives & History
Log for 10/29/24
On Tuesday, I worked from 10AM to 4PM. I mainly focused on searching through finding aids using AlabamaMosaic's search engine. I cannot recommend this website enough for researchers in Alabama, it has helped me find a lot of interesting collections!
While using this website, I found a rather large collection of photographs and videos that document Queer and minority activism. The Christiane Robinson photograph and video collection has well over 2,000 items that effectively record various sociopolitical demonstrations. Here's a brief review of this incredible resource:
The Christiane Robinson photograph and video collection
This collection focuses on the work of Christian Robinson, "a freelance translator and self-taught photographer with a special interest in documentary photography and photojournalism." This collection was first published in 2021 and has content ranging from early-2015 to mid-2020. Here is the list of events represented by Robinson's photography:
Same-Sex Marriage at Montgomery County Probate (February 9, 2015) Same-Sex Marriage at Mobile County Probate (February 12, 2015) Sanctity of Marriage Rally and Counter-Protest (February 21, 2015) "I Support Biblical Marriage" Rally and Counter-Protest (March 22, 2015) Safe Zone for All Peace Walk (April 11, 2015) Alabama for Marriage Rally (June 6, 2015) Keith Ingram and Albert Pigg at Houston County Probate (June 29, 2015) Rally for Keith Ingram and Albert Pigg (June 30, 2015) Equality Wiregrass Rally and March (July 13, 2015) Storming the State House (September 16, 2015) Safe Zone for All Peace Walk (September 26, 2015) Montgomery Pride United Convention (October 17, 2015) Safe Zone for All Peace Walk (September 10, 2016) Ambrosia Starling at AUM (September 27, 2016) Moral Movement Alabama Rally (February 7, 2017) Doug Jones Rally (October 3, 2017) ADAH Visit (February 15, 2018) March for Our Lives (March 24, 2018) Pride on the Plains Parade (June 1, 2018) Pride on the Plains Festival (June 2, 2018) Magic City Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence 10th Anniversary (August 4, 2018) Women's March (January 26, 2019) Vigil for Victims of Hate and Violence (February 16, 2019) March for Reproductive Freedom (May 19, 2019) Pride on the Plains Parade (May 31, 2019) Transgender Visibility March on Montgomery (September 28, 2019) Justice for George Floyd Solidarity Protest (June 6, 2020)
Having frequented Queer protests, Robinson provides an insightful view into modern Queer activism in Alabama. Her pictures not only capture the brightly colored and strongly worded signs, but the love and community shared by those in the crowd:
Participants at the Transgender Visibility March on Montgomery in front of the Capitol in Montgomery, Alabama. (2019)
L. D. Sykes giving flowers to a newlywed couple at the Montgomery County courthouse annex on South Lawrence Street in Montgomery, Alabama, on the day the county began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. (2015)
Archived Queer history is often marked by pain and mistreatment by our society. In my experience, finding homophobic articles from the 80s is easier than finding pieces of Queer joy from that same period. As time improves acceptance, and as archives learn to handle diverse history, evidence of our lives turns toward the positive. This collection is evidence of a great social change from both outside and within the archive sphere.

I've been putting in extra time to make up for the 18-hour deficit I'm currently in. I'm technically working more hours than need be for my credits, but I don't want to skimp out regardless. My hour-debt is now down to 16.5.

[19] For alternative uses of the concept see Gordon, "Prefigurative Politics." My use is closest to what he calls "generative" but my emphasis is more on the affective and cognitive function of social pratices.
[20] Gordon, "Dark Tidings," 249.
[21] Since his piece was originally published Gordon too has become less sure of the near-term collapse of industrial capitalism. "Peak oil" seems to have been postponed as new methods of intensive extraction have preliferated. This also implies the decreased likelihood of a "greener" capitalism (see his comment to the revisited piece "Darkness Falls").
[22] Gordon, "Dark Tidings," 251.
[23] Eco-fascist tendencies do not just exist among obscure writers of the neo-reactionary "Dark Enlightenment" or the recent wave of nazi terrorism (Achenbach, "Two Mass Killings a World Apart Share a Common Theme"). The eugenicist logic in the name of environmentalism popularized by Garrett Hardin (Amend, "First as Tragedy, Then as Fascism.") lives on today with envigorated strength in the climate debate where European academics deploy Malthusian ideas about ‘over-population’ in former colonies (Koutonin, "On The Myth Of 'Overpopulated' Africa.") and where capitalists like Bill Gates finance authoritarian state-run programs of population control (Wilson, "For Reproductive Justice in an Era of Gates and Modi.")
[24] This is both the title of their 2013 paper and their 2018 book (CL). I primarily refer to the book, except where it diverges from the paper.
[25] M&W, CL, 28–30.
[26] M&W, "Political Scenarios for Climate Disaster." In Climate Leviathan they also note Behemoth's "constant failure" to offer alternatives to the crises of liberal capitalism as a reason to doubt its longterm endurance (CL, 44).
[27] M&W considers the Paris Agreement "an important step toward the emergence of planetary sovereignty" and a "legal and political foreshadowing of Climate Leviathan's form" (CL, 38, 35). In the paper they argue that Leviathan will be most likely be build upon the "US-led liberal capitalist bloc" through legitimizing institutions like the United Nations ("Climate Leviathan," 2013, 7); while in the book they argue that it could only achieve true domination by including other geopolitical and economic powers like China (CL, 32).
[28] "Our task is to ... reject Leviathan, Mao, and Behemoth, while affirming other possibilities. What remains? All we have and all we have ever had: X." M&W, CL, 197.
[29] Gordon, "Darkness Falls."
[30] M&W writes that the priority "must be to organize for a rapid reduction of carbon emissions by collective boycott and strike" (CL, 173.) while Gordon advices activists to focus on "delegitimation, direct action (both destructive and creative), and networking" (Gordon, "Dark Tidings," 253.). All this is necessary, but we also need to build our communities in order to survive.
[31] Franzen, "What If We Stopped Pretending the Climate Apocalypse Can Be Stopped?"; Bendell, "Deep Adaptation."
[32] The limit for human heat tolerance is around 35°C (95°F) at 100% relative humidity at which point the body can no longer get rid of excess heat. Hundreds of millions could be impacted by such conditions by the end of the century (Coffel, Horton, and Sherbinin, "Temperature and Humidity").

[34] This is what she refers to as "disaster capitalism." Klein, The Shock Doctrine, 6.
[35] Kastner, "USAID Forced Sweatshops on Haiti."
[36] This is not to say that there is no dependency. As the author of the book on Mutual Aid, Peter Kropotkin, notes, a reciproal relation can arise from the recognition of the "mutual dependence of all upon every one" which he also calls "solidarity"; Ethics, 293.

[54] In a survey after Hurricane Sandy most respondents reported that the disaster "brought out the best in the people in their neighborhood" and that neighbors were helping each other (Tompson et al., "Resilience in the Wake of Superstorm Sandy," 8.) For historical examples, see Colin Ward's Anarchy in Action, 34-. Concerning "disaster communism" and "disaster anarchy" in the context of climate change see Dawson, Extreme Cities, chap. 6; Clark, The Impossible Community, chap. 8; and Firth, Disaster Anarchy.

[59] M&W, "Climate Leviathan," 2013, 7. In the book they update this analysis to include the scenario where a US-led capitalist bloc collaborates with China (CL, 32.)
[60] M&W also mentions these two possibilities in CL, 152.
[61] It might seem unlikely that the US could take the lead on climate change but political trends can change with a few elections and oil crises. As I have noted, the "deep state" within the US is taking climate change very seriously and anything that can be marketed as a "war" and requires US "leadership" could be politically advantageous in US elections.
[62] As Ostrom writes, it is essential to reexamine the view that "solutions to global change must be global in scale" ("A Polycentric Approach for Coping with Climate Change," 2).

Senators grill Boeing CEO on whistleblower retaliation, ‘broken’ safety culture

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun faced bipartisan heat Tuesday as he sat for his first congressional testimony nearly six months after the door plug of a Boeing 737 Max 9 blew off during an Alaska Airlines flight in January.
Calhoun, who announced in March he was stepping down at the end of the year, sought to assure senators his company was serious about improving its safety and quality practices amid ongoing investigations by the Justice Department and federal regulators.
Two out of every three airplanes flying in the U.S. are Boeing airplanes, Calhoun pointed out, and the planemaker receives billions of dollars from the federal government each year, the lion’s share coming from the Defense Department.
“We’re here because we want Boeing to succeed. Boeing needs to succeed for the sake of the jobs it provides, for the sake of local economies it supports, for the sake of the American traveling public, for the sake of our military,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), who chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations that held the hearing.
But Blumenthal’s office released new whistleblower allegations Tuesday morning that the senator said raise concerns about Boeing’s commitment to actually making the promised changes.
Sam Mohawk, a Boeing quality assurance inspector, alleged the company improperly handled faulty parts, that those parts were likely installed on airplanes including the 737 Max, and that the company retaliated against him when he raised concerns.
“The 737 program was losing hundreds of non-conforming parts,” Mohawk said in a staff memo to members of the Senate subcommittee. Mohawk filed a complaint detailing the allegations with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration on June 11.
Additional whistleblowers appeared before the Senate subcommittee in April to detail allegations of safety concerns and a culture of silence and corner cutting at the organization.
Sam Salehpour, another Boeing quality engineer, alleged during that hearing the fuselage pieces of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner were not being fused together properly, which could cause the plane to crack open in midair after an extended period of time.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), ranking member on the subcommittee, said he was “disappointed” that major airlines, Boeing’s customers, have declined to testify before the committee to explain their quality and maintenance systems to assure the American public.
Boeing delivered its plan to improve its safety culture and quality assurance and measure improvements to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) last month.
The plan included an additional 300 hours of training, quality inspections and approvals of 737 fuselages before they’re shipped to suppliers and more time for managers to be present on the factory floor.
When Sen. Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.) asked Calhoun how he planned to foster trust in Boeing’s leadership to cement those changes, Calhoun said the company celebrates “people who give us information that helps our operation” but had “a ways to go, and we have to keep working on that one.”
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) asked Calhoun exactly what he did to earn his $32.8 million annual salary, pointing out the executive’s compensation had skyrocketed 45 percent from 2022 to 2023.
When Hawley pressed Calhoun on why he had not resigned, the embattled CEO said, “I’m sticking this through.”
“I’m proud of every action we’ve taken,” Calhoun added.
“Wow. Well, there’s some news for you,” Hawley said following the heated exchange.
Blumenthal, a former prosecutor, also got “really angry” when Calhoun denied Boeing employees knew about issues with the flight stabilization Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System that led to high-profile, fatal Boeing 737 Max 8 crashes in 2018 and 2019.
“The evidence shows, in fact, that the engineers working on this plane knew that that faulty control system drove the nose down under certain circumstances,” Blumenthal said.
“Lion Air and Ethiopian Air struggled to lift that nose as the plane plummeted toward the sea, and they couldn’t do it because they didn’t know what was happening,” Blumenthal added, referencing the 2018 and 2019 crashes. “And the reason they didn’t know what was happening is because Boeing concealed it. They concealed it from the FAA.”
The Justice Department filed criminal charges against Boeing in 2021 for allegedly conspiring to defraud the U.S., but the prosecution was deferred after Boeing paid a $2.5 billion fine.
Calhoun apologized to the family members of victims who died in the 2018 and 2019 crashes at the top of the hearing.
“I want to personally apologize, on behalf of everyone at Boeing. We are deeply sorry for your losses. Nothing is more important than the safety of the people who step on board our airplanes. Every day, we seek to honor the memory of those lost through a steadfast commitment to safety and quality,” Calhoun said.
The Justice Department said last month that Boeing violated the deferred prosecution agreement “by failing to design, implement, and enforce a compliance and ethics program to prevent and detect violations of the U.S. fraud laws throughout its operations.”
The company pushed back, saying, “We believe that we have honored the terms of that agreement.” Federal prosecutors said they would let the court know how they want to proceed by July 7.TAGS ALASKA AIRLINES BOEING BOEING 737 MAX 9 DAVE CALHOUN DAVE CALHOUN DAVID CALHOUN FAA FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION JUSTICE DEPARTMENT NTSB RICHARD BLUMENTHAL RICHARD BLUMENTHAL RON JOHNSON
