Yknow. I do forsee a potential plot point for Netflix-levania to somehow have Dracula as a villain back, even with the end of the previous series. Obligation. He's no longer the weary widower, and with Lisa's return there's closure. He's lived as a man. He understands man. He may not even hate man. Maybe.
And yet he's back because the other Vampires are fucking it up and now daddy's home to bring back order. He's no longer gunning for genocide, but honestly, the politicking of the vampires who are so far up their own asses, they need to be reminded who's really in charge. His death left a power vacuum, a particularly annoying vacuum. Maybe the little things of humanity irk him, but vampires are everything they have but turned up to 11.
So at the end it's a formality. He'll come back, clean things up among vampire society, make enough of a mess to get a Belmont to kill him, then turn in for another 100 years.
Does this make him too noble? Probably. If you want the grandiose "What is a man" Dracula, you can extrapolate from "It's an obligation" and have him actively resent people pulling him out of the afterlife from Lisa so fucking much, that he leans too hard into the role. The part of him who's evil out of obligation and the part who's evil out of resentment begin to blur the lines. Is he the lord of darkness because that's the role he's been cast and is simply going through the motions or his he just so simply done with the whole process that he refuses to give up an inch of power to any other Vampire (or human) because they're all just children in his eyes?
It could still ultimately culminate in a Soma Cruz plot line where after 1999 he quits so hard that he refuses to even return to the role properly but it doesn't matter because his mere presence fills the vacuum, even when he does nothing (not for the lack of trying from others).
Maybe that's a bit petulant in its own right. YMMV, but I think that's the point. For being such an archetypal lord of all evil villains, how he fills it is shockingly dynamic. He's evil for evils sake, a beacon of arrogance, or a truly tragic villain. Depends on what's needed. If he does come back, I do want to really see a "Castlevania does Bram Stoker's Dracula. Genuinely. It's just an adaptation for the original novel because that's Canon to the original Castlevania timeline, and it'd be funny to properly reveal that Quincy Morris is a Belmont (And his son fights WW1 vampires and grandson WW2)."
#castlevania#netflix castlevania#castlevania nocturne#just a 4am rambling with minimal thought behind it#watching the new show it didnt feel like elizabeth bathory was meant to be the truly intimidating presence as the show pretended she was#but that shes merely a placeholder for the truly engaging villains come in#why else would she be so overpoweringly overshadowed by Orlox and Dralto#theyre actually interesting shell just be usurped late#if thats not the case and actually was meant to be as a replacement for the big D#then thats an obvious criticism like yeah if she was meant to be this impossing go for it#dont just skimp out on her this fucking mich#but like in far fewer time drac's intro had him fall amusingly into line for a woman and then rained literal hell for her death#including big faces in the sky and pyres#while bathory here was all 'ooh a messiah a messiah' with to back up thats not actually shared by other vampires#like being hard to kill#hell orlox's 7 minutes in the intro sold his presence#so here as a writer witching this lackluster portrayl feels like inevitable prep for a more compelling big bad#cant believe i didnt mention carmilla. shes like the same archetype as bathory but well done

Hello chibishortdeath! I hope you don’t mind me sending an anime recommendation. This anime sorta reminds me of Simon’s Quest and so I thought you might enjoy it (and it makes me fantasize of what an animated Simon’s Quest might be like). It’s Dororo (2019) and the whole series is available on YouTube. It’s basically got a protagonist suffering from a curse that has to travel to defeat monsters and “gather” body parts. But unlike Simon’s Quest, the protagonist is followed by a kid, so that might not be to your liking. But I just can’t recommend it enough! It does get really violent and gory though, so here’s a warning.
Oooo, I looked it up and it sounds really cool!!! :O I’ll have to check it out, I think some of my family members might like seeing it too tbh. As much of a legend in manga as Osamu Tezuka is, I’m surprisingly not very familiar with most of his work. I saw a couple episodes of Astro Boy and one of the movie adaptations when I was younger, but that’s about it. So it’ll be cool to actually get into something of his!!! Thanks for the recommendation, I really appreciate it :3!!!!!!!!
#asks#ask post#text post#recommendations#dororo#Simon’s Quest#<- mentioned#that sounds awesome tbh#I love when things are easily available on YouTube too#there’s a lot of streaming services my family canceled cause they had no reasons to be paying for them#I gotta make a list of anime I need to see hmmm >:3c#I’ve been recommended to watch Vinland Saga and Berserk recently#completely different genre but also Chobits lol XD#my dad says I should watch Fist of the North Star#and I also still haven’t seen vampire hunter D SOMEHOW which feels like a cardinal sin as like a general vampire fan#I have also yet to have forced people to watch jojo with me alas#yippie my notes app is gonna be put to use today :)#anime post#not castlevania post#not primarily anyway#thanks for the ask!

It's frustrating :(
I like N!Hector in S2. I think he's a good interpretation of Hector pre-betrayal, with some traits being given more emphasis over others. But by S3 he stops being a compelling character, right as N!Isaac steals the spotlight :\
The fandom seems to be split into game fans who love Hector only because he's cool and shit on N!Hector for being a dumb "simp" (which he's not, he's a victim of abuse, coercion and rape), and show fans who think N!Hector is deep and Hector is just a shallow edgelord.
I love Hector and I think he's much more nuanced than people give him credit for. If you like N!Hector for his history of abuse, love for animals (kind of) and his deep need to be loved to the point that he latches onto the wrong people, Hector is the same, I promise, it's just more subtle and isn't used to demean the character. And it's a big shame that the character got lost into a... let's call it problematic narrative to say the least, because he actually had some interesting character traits like his cavalier "I can fix it" attitude towards death.
I wholeheartedly suggest to not only watch a playthrough of CoD (or play it yourself, but admittedly the game is very flawed unless you like the grind), but to retrieve the two prequel mangas. They flesh out Hector, Isaac and Rosaly so much - and let me tell you, I definitely don't see N!Isaac as an improvement over Isaac after reading them... and Lenore as a replacement for Rosaly makes me unspeakably furious :)
anyway. wish CoD wasn't so obscure and unpopular :(
People only talking about Netflix Castlevania's Hector makes me kind of sad.
Not because Netflixvania Hector was so broken and tragic, but because OG Hector (who also went through some tragic stuff off screen and before the game officially begins) would have been 100% done with everyone's(Mainly Isaac's) shit and had 0 chill. And the main character of his own fucking video game!
I'm talking HAM levels of anger and tearing everyone up with his bare fists (that's an option btw). He fought Trevor, Saint Germain, and Death and triggered a time paradox!
I don't think it's saying too much that I'm not very impressed with how they handled his character in the Animated Series. Or anything after Season 2... (Except Isaac... I guess...)
#Castlevania#hector castlevania#anti netflixvania#<- kind of#it's annoying to me how hector is only remembered as the gigachad of the series#don't get me wrong. he *is* a gigachad lmao#but there's more to him you know?#like in the subreddit there once was a question like “what would game hector do with carmilla?”#and the unanimous answer was “he'd kill her ass”#true. but what about their interactions? that was an interesting question#would hector team up with carmilla despite her being blatantly untrustworthy? because they at least share a superficial goal?#oh and i also don't like when fans say that game hector would slap n!hector and find him a dumbass#i think he'd take pity on him because he'd see his old self in him#and then he'd kill carmilla and lenore yay :D#anyway. sorry for butting in op. feel free to ignore me#i'm just. full of thoughts about both hectors#Hector is voiced by Crispin Freeman if that's reason enough to watch/play#<- freeman and o'brien eating each other in the intro cutscene of cod gives me so much life <3

Hi, I would like some Castlevania headcanons please! About Alucard having a younger sibling but the sibling is still a child :D
OMGGG MY FIRST REQUEST!!! Ty sm for the request <3
so sorry I didn't see it until now 😭
since gender wasn't specified ill make reader gn
also this is my first time writing headcanons so I hope this is good enough😭
Feel free to give me any feedback or constructive criticism <3
Alucard x child!sibling!gn!reader Headcanons
fluffy brother/little sibling stuff
word count: 557
warnings: none, a little bit angsty at the end
When BigBrother!Alucard met you for the first time he swore on his life that he'd always protect you no matter what. no man nor beast will ever be able to harm you. not while he was around
While your mother was treating people of the village and your father was down in his lab researching, your big brother would play with you to keep you from causing any trouble
You’d play things like hide and seek together, which wasn’t really fair since he was as way more experienced with his powers than you are at your young age :(
"Adrian, this isn't fair! you're way older and faster than me!"
"You're the one who said you wanted to have a race y/n. You'll never get faster if you don't try you know."
When I say he’d do anything for you I mean it
He’d especially get into trouble with his father for you
On one occasion he had taken one of your fathers “pretty” science tubes but ended up knocking something important onto some also very important blueprints
Your father kept a very close eye on you both when you were around his lab after that
BigBrother!Alucard is also in charge of making sure you don’t get yourself lost in the woods around your home
You’d purposefully leave the house without telling anyone just so your older brother would have to find you
You loved when he had to chase you around big trees and across wide ponds with rocks surrounding them
Of course, he could easily catch you but usually he’d let you have your fun
He did have mini heart attacks whenever you’d run too fast around the steep and slippery rocks
His main worry was you falling and hitting your head on a rock or falling into the river
"Y/n! Watch where you're running! You don't want to run into another tree do you?"
Also BigBrother!Alucard is basically your tutor
Your parents taught you too, but you preferred your brother's teachings because he made lessons more fun for you
There was a time when your whole family went on one of your fathers' trips since he loved to travel so much
You got to see all sorts of sights together :)
For obvious reasons, your family didn't get out much, so it was a nice change of scenery for the four of you
After the death of your mother and father Alucard was the only one you had left
Alucard was worried about how your little brain was going to process such a loss, but he did his best to comfort you
It was hard for him to act like not only a brother, but a mother and father for you
You were very much brighter than most children at your age so you saw how much it was taking a toll on your brother
You tried to comfort him the best you could
"Don't worry Adrian. I don't feel so lonely because you look so much like mama! It's like I have you and her in one person :)"
He usually just laughed it off when you said strange things like that
He was also sad that you were literally growing up way faster than regular children should
He missed when you were small enough for him to cradle you in one arm
i got sad at the end cuz i was listening to music and i thought about reader and alucard growing up together :(

My Hero Academia: AFO's Other Allies
Maybe it's just because I watched the first installment of Arcane S2, but something I think would have been a really cool plotline in My Hero is if other allies of AFO had been introduced. Not the Doctor or Gigantomachia who were clearly his loyal followers. I mean other villain overlords who were part of his inner circle. An inner circle that collapsed in his absence.
All Might kills AFO, the classic power vacuum opens up, the remaining villain overlords fight amongst each other for dominance in the new order and their individual greed and pride destroys what’s left of AFO’s influence.
I've already made another post expressing my skepticism that AFO rose to power and other villains just took that laying down. Somebody had to have looked at the crown and wanted it badly enough to take him on, crazy as it might have been. But every villain overlord has his/her/their generals, lieutenants, constituents, whatever you want to call them. Overhaul had his loyal Eight Bullets, after all, and Dark Might had the entire Gollini family.
Arcane: Silco had the Chem-Barons. Not exactly loyal followers, but they feared him too much to know they couldn't overpower him.
Harry Potter: Voldemort's Death Eaters. He was pretty pissed none of them tried to find him after his 'death.'
Castlevania: Dracula's Generals. Again, not a completely loyal group and were in the stages of forming a coup, but there was still that level of fear that kept them in line.
D. Gray Man: The Millennium Earl's Noah Clan. Definitely loyal followers as they do regard each other as family.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Father and the Seven Homunculi. Another makeshift family of a kind.
In all honestly, I guess there is a canon explanation for the lack of AFO's allies: He does say All Might took out several of his 'friends,' so I guess that could have been part of the strategy. Incapacitate the Demon Lord by cutting off his limbs first, then going for the head so to speak.
But think about how interesting it would have been for Shigaraki to have to go about winning the support of AFO's old allies instead of the MLA plotline. Or if Re-Destro had been a former ally of AFO who was no more impressed by the skinny, gamer nobody and his ragtag coterie than Gigantomachia was. Or if another one of AFO’s former followers was trying to win over the Doctor’s support and Garaki wanted them both to prove their worth. Maybe the old allies have gotten used to the new order, accepted the golden age of villainy has passed in spite of All Might’s retirement, and they just aren’t willing to gamble what little they managed to keep after AFO’s fall.
It's a very The Old vs The New theme if we're pitting AFO's former followers against the League of Villains, but I think it would have still fit the tone in mirroring the hero students working to surpass their own predecessors. It would have presented Shigaraki with a shrewd choice to make: Do I bother winning over the has-beens in hopes they have invaluable experience to offer or do I eliminate them and risk making mistakes they could have counseled me about?

Book Carmilla vs Adaptations (SPOILERS)
Here are a few 'interesting' adaptations. I like some of them for their own merits, but mostly dislike them as Carmilla adaptations for the below reasons, with some notable exceptions: Vampyr: The Dream of Allan Gray (1932 film): The first Carmilla inspired movie, although it keeps almost NOTHING from the novella except 'female vampire'. In this case, a creepy old lady rather than a charming young lesbian. This is a really moody, slow, acid trip of a film though, a treat for fans of vintage vampire film. (3/10) Hammer Karnstein Trilogy: The Vampire Lovers is the gayest and most book-accurate. Carmilla still kisses/seduces men before killing them, boo. The second one her identically-named reincarnation is blonde and has sex with / falls in love with a man booooooo. She's not in the third one at all. It's all very 70's and nowhere near queer enough, but at least we got the incomparable Ingrid Pitt in the first movie. 5/10. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust: 'Carmilla' shows up as a surprise third act villain. She's an elegant and imposing vampire queen with a castle called "Cjethe" and the Vampire King offed her previously for being A Bit Too Extra. She's... Bathory. She's Elizabeth Bathory, right down to the name of her historical castle, the elaborate gowns and the blood-bathing. Bathory in Castlevania Nocturne even looks a lot like this one. Cool scary vampire lady, but Carmilla In Name Only. 4/10 Castlevania (Games): She's fine here, but mostly just kind of a big Dracula groupie like most of the other non-Dracula vampires. Often depicting as a flying skull or mask crying bloody tears, with optional succubus-like figure reclining on top of it. Cool. Rondo of Blood has her appear together with a ninja vampire Laura with bunny ears because why the hell not. 6/10 Castlevania (Netflix show): Baddass, angry Karen. She's amazing in the first season when she's scheming against Dracula, but after that she just sort of sits on her butt sipping wine and griping about men for a whole season until Isaac storms her castle. A cool character but not a great Carmilla, because Carmilla for me is defined by how much she loves women, not how much she hates men. Still amazing voice work by Jaime Murray though and her last stand was insanely baddass. 7/10
Carmilla Web Series / Movie: My favorite adaptation. It's obviously playing waaaay fast and loose with the canon and reframing her as a charming antihero in a zany urban fantasy, but there's deep current of love for the source material, especially in the movie. Natasha Negovanlis has charisma off the charts and the Hollstein romance is adorable. This Carmilla might be a black-leather-wearing snarky millenial goth with a Canadian accent, but as the show goes on it peels back layer after layer of the romantic, poetic, wistful, world-weary immortal hinted at by the novella. This show redeems LeFanu's lovelorn villain in all the best ways. 10/10. 2019 movie / Styria movie: I still haven't seen these, have heard good things about the gothic cinematography on the most recent one but not good things about the rest of it. The trailer looked moody and pretty though, I may watch it at some point.

poorly constructed netflixvania rant under the cut,,, and yes i will be using capital letters for once! don't question it.
small warning because my rant is all over the place and by no means professional. i'm still relatively new to castlevania and may or may not get a few things wrong,,, sorry, if i do! 🙇🏻♂️ i plan on adding more to this later to make it seem less like alphabet soup, if you will.
Obviously, I'm aware that I'm a tad late to the whole "netflixvania ranting" thing, but honestly, I really don't care if I'm late or if this gains traction somehow or not. I just want to put this out there and get this OUT.
Now, I'd say that I'm awfully new to the Castlevania community itself. I'm a minor, so it's not like I grew up playing the games when they came out. 💀 Hell, I actually found out about Castlevania through watching its Netflix adaptation. But honestly, when I got Smash Bros Ultimate and found out about Richter and Simon, then doing further research and finding out about the games themselves, I'd say I abandoned the show immediately after that. Like, immediately. The games just interested me MUCH more!
Netflixvania is just... boring. It feels uncanny. Not canon, of course, just.. uncanny. Weird. Honestly, I feel horrible considering the large amount of people that actually LIKE Netflixvania compared to the games and say it's better, or even not have heard of the games in the first place! It's so stupid, when you compare the games and show.
Honestly, comparing the show to the games is... wild. I've seen people say that "oh, yeah netflixvania SUCKS, buuuut the first season is still badass!!!" Like... no, buddy... no... Netflixvania refuses to adapt Castlevania from the very start. The get-go, if you will. The very first season of this wretched show starts off completely off the rails. Not even the first season is above "sub-par".
The games have an immersive, charming, compelling storyline with a bunch of really well-constructed lore, at least in my opinion. I absolutely LOVE the whole plot of a massive feud going on between mortals who have to start a bloodline to fight this immortal Big Bad, and their reactions, their bad reputation with the Transylvanian townspeople despite the fact that the Belmont clan is pretty much the only thing keeping the former alive, and much more.
Anyway, back to this godawful adaptation.
First off, the goddamn showrunner of Netflixvania, Warren Ellis, literally CUT OUT A CHARACTER from the VERY VIDEO GAME THAT HE WAS ADAPTING INTO A SHOW, just because he thought that the character's name "sounded stupid", and that having a "pirate" character apparently wouldn't make sense, because ooh romania is a landlocked country!!! YOU IMBECILE. GRANT DANASTY IS NOT EVEN A PIRATE.💀💀💀 That was a mistranslation, for crying out loud! Isn't Grant a thief??? Not a pirate??? Also, who gives a shit if he even was a pirate?! This is the same adaptation that turned Trevor 'FUCKING' Belmont into a stumbling drunkard and Alucard into a horse-faced sex object. Everyone else is out-of-character enough by themselves! Who CARES if there's one single """pirate""" character??? This is the same show that has mages and Devil Forgemasters and, oh, let's not forget; FUCKING VAMPIRES??? This is a fantasy setting!! Why would you deny a canon character his chance in the spotlight for the sake of historical accuracy in a fictional world like this??
Besides, as aforementioned, Grant wasn't even a pirate in the first place! Ergo, it wouldn't matter if the story took place in a landlocked country or not!
Anyway, next point. Still about the characters, though. Mostly how they talk. Almost very single word these characters say is emphasized with a few "fuck"s and/or "shit"s, "bloody hell"s, etc., ESPECIALLY with Trevor. It's as if they're using curse words to sound more witty or mature, which is literally one of the first (and frankly, most obvious) of Red Flags for Horrendous Adult Media. In my opinion, at least. I just don't understand the reason why. I don't recall any of the Castlevania games having a single curse word in them (correct me if I'm wrong on that bit), but the games were still marketed for more mature audiences, too! You don't need profane language and a few splashes of vomit to make a compelling story for adults. Really, truly.
Back on that bit, it feels as if the writers REALLY wanted to make Trevor really witty. A bit of a whimsical jokester. Which, by the by, also if I recall correctly, isn't what his personality is really like at all. At least, not for the most part. In Curse of Darkness, Trevor was definitely a bit witty and cunning, but he also had a pretty damn big ego. He was confident, blunt and hotheaded. He's an arrogant bastard. CoD Trevor is intimidating as well. However, he's also honorable and likeable. Just a neat little guy.
Netflixvania Trevor, on the other end, is... odd. He's aloof, cynical, still having a bit of arrogance, but I don't know. It didn't feel like Trevor. I don't know how to explain it. Maybe I'll come up with something better someday else.
Well, now that I'm mostly rambling about Trevor now, I think I should talk about his actual outward design as well. Truly, none of the members of the Netflixvania cast have retained any of their ingame designs, at least for the most part. Except for Alucard, of course, but I'll mention that a bit more later. I'll only talk about the main trio (RIP Grant Danasty, you were never nasty and will be here in spirit...) and their designs right now.
Starting off with Treffy himself. His design is... a bit odd. Now, I feel as if it's his eye that irks me the most. Let me just pull up some visual aids for this one:
THIS is Netflixvania Trevor. I apologize in advance for the low-quality PNG I've just slapped here.
Anyway, look at his eye. It has a scar on it. Keep that in mind.
THIS is Trevor's actual, ingame design for the game that was supposed to be adapted correctly, and there's no sign of any eye injury here.
And in Trevor's CoD design, he ALSO has a scar... but this isn't all that similar to his DC design, either.
Personally, I feel as if Netflixvania Trevor looks more like Judgement Trevor, than anything...
You can see the scar on his eye (IGNORING the outfit...), but even then, JuD Trevor still has an eyepatch. Netflixvania Treffy does NOT have an eyepatch. These are just differences in design, mind you, i know absolutely nothing about Judgement itself.
Anyway, Treffy (i'll just be calling him that from now on) looks like a weird mix between JuD Trevor, because of the hair and body structure, and CoD Trevor, due to the visible scar, I guess.
...Which is even worse, because it just goes to show how much the creators of Netflixvania really deviated from the source material. Maybe I'm just fucking blind over here, but really I see no similarities between Treffy and actual DC Trevor. Except, maybe, like, the boots, but really?
Now, on to the rest of the party: (except for my boy Grant, who got fucking excluded...)
Sypha actually looks like this in DC:
She looks pretty different! Luckily, not the most different compared to what happened to my rotten soldier, my good time boy Trevor, but still quite different. Firstly, Sypha's face is covered, and her robes are quite big on her, and this was actually intentional!
For the record, if you haven't played DC, the whole reason why Sypha looks more boyish is because she was hiding her gender for the whole game in order to travel safely. Her true gender is only revealed at the end of the game. (Truly an iconic Samus Metroid moment you conjured up there, Konami.)
Anyway, this is Sypha's Netflix version.
Again, sorry for the weird pixel outline on the image. I didn't even edit these.
Anyway, luckily, this one isn't all that different, except the obvious fact that Sypha isn't hiding her gender in this one. Although, I still do definitely believe she was done dirty. I mean, look at that hair! Christ. I'm not sure why they didn't make Sypha hide her gender until the end like in the original game, but then again, a pretty concerning amount of canon events from DC and Castlevania as a whole I guess didn't make the cut, so I doubt it'd be wise to set the bar any higher than the floor.
Next up, oh no. Alucart. I'll be referring to his horse-faced counterpart as this, because although his design is still game-accurate... It was for the wrong game.
This is his Netflix design:
See, it's okay. It's a biiiit inaccurate to his SoTN version... (for SoTN swag, see here) but! This isn't a SoTN adaptation!!! THIS, chaps, chapesses, and chapsticks is supposed to be for Dracula's Curse! and this is Alucard's DC design:
See? Now, this is just completely different! In this version, Alucard definitely gives off traditional, pop culture vampire vibes, definitely taking after his father in this one. But Alucart... Poor Alucart... he's just an odd mix of SoTN and.. not SoTN. It's literally just his SoTN self, but in a more revealing outfit with random ass belts. It's as if they simply went on a quick Google adventure and looked no further for Alucart's to-be design. But seriously, why exactly are they showing his bare chest here? Why is he muscular? Huh?????
... These redesigns are... something else, that's for sure! Of course, I know that with every adaptation, there's bound to be some changes, but with Netflixvania, there are a LOT of changes, and absolutely none of them are necessary.
For one, characters like Godbrand and Lenore were never in the games! The writers just slapped in some random OCs and scrapped an actual, canon character for petty reasons. They also nerfed Hector because of a behind-the-scenes argument between writers. They let their own pettiness ruin a show. Hell, Warren Ellis himself didn't even know anything about Castlevania. He just took everything from secondhand sources! It's not professional or sane.
I honestly didn't even watch the full show myself. I probably should, so maybe I can edit this rant a bit. Anyway, I only watched S1 and a bit of S2. Honestly, I have no idea why they didn't just stop the show when Dracula got pounded into the ground for the umpteenth time. There wasn't any real need to continue the show for even more seasons. Just... I don't know. It's really weird??? The show just seems... boring. Like, seriously. What's even the point, at that point? Our favorite three stooges Johnny Test'ed Drac into oblivion, just as they needed to do, so why continue? It just seems as if they're milking it.
...Yeah i don't know how to continue this. In summary, play the games instead. Watch let's-plays, if you can. As I mentioned earlier, this rant may not be too professional or well-written, and I apologize if I mixed anything up. I plan on adding more to this later, but right now, my hands are getting numb q(╥﹏╥)p

Fantasy Anime Recommendations
I love all kinds of fantasy, whether it be high fantasy, low fantasy, dark fantasy, or urban fantasy. So here are my recommendations for that genre.
Disclaimer: More will be added to this list as I slowly work through my to-be-watched list
Black Clover
4 seasons and a Canon movie ongoing
My favorite underrated Battle Shonen series is about an orphan boy who dreams of being the wizard King. However, there is a slight problem since he was born without the ability to use magic. This is for you if you like the classic battle Shonen. It takes that classic formula and executes it to perfection. Plus, the show has some of the best-written supporting cast and female characters in Shonen.
Mashle: Magic and Muscles:
2 seasons ongoing
Satirical parody of Harry Potter. Except it's a kid without magic who has to somehow survive at the universe equivalent of Hogwarts without anyone finding out he can't use magic
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
1 season ongoing
It's a beautiful story and one of the best shows I've ever watched. However, it is not for everyone. Some people cannot handle the slow pacing because sometimes it is just as much of a slice of Life as it is an action-adventure story.
Wistoria: Wand and Sword
1 season is ongoing
A kid without magic wants to be a great magician, but to gain that title, he picks up a sword to prove you don't need magic to become the greatest. Unfortunately, he still has to go to magic school. Black Clover mixed with Mashle is just as good as both.
Black Butler
4 seasons, a two-part special, and a Canon movie ongoing.
A young boy and his demon butler solve mysteries in Victorian England. I recommend researching what Canon and non-canon or OVA are before you start. Otherwise, you will be confused.
Dungeon Meshi
One season ongoing
There's a reason this took over Tumblr for months and is still trending
The Case Study of Vanitas
A human doctor for vampires and his vampire companion in Paris. This one was an emotional roller coaster. The fate of season 3 is unknown and it is a shame
Trese
It's a supernatural detective show set in the Philippines, and it's a shame it only got one season
Not anime, but still adult animation
Castlevania
Completed, but there is an ongoing spin-off series
Based on the Japanese game, Netflix did a fantastic job adapting it. I never played the games and I loved it. I rewatched it with someone who played the games, and they loved all the Easter eggs
The sequel Castlevania Nocturne is not as good as the original. Hopefully, they fix that with the second season. The trailer did look amazing
The Legend of Vox Machina
3 seasons ongoing
You like classic high fantasy. This is for you. It's based on the D&D live stream show Critical Role. A friend of mine jokingly calls it Middle Earth. If they were allowed to say fuck it's very adult and very gory. However, it is amazing and one of my favorite animated shows.
Blood of Zeus
2 seasons ongoing
If you like Greek mythology, this one's for you. The story of one of Zeus's bastards and the consequences of Hera finding out about them. It's a story that feels like it could be straight out of Greek mythology and they do a fantastic job
Maya and The Three
One season it's a Netflix exclusive
Think of it as a love story of Mesoamerican culture in animated form. It's probably the most out of my recommendations because it is 3D animation. But God I love this show. It's about an Aztec princess who has to fight the gods in order to save her Kingdom along with her companions, who are members of the Inca, the Maya, and the indigenous Caribbean culture. Again, it's a love story of the indigenous cultures of Mesoamerica made by actual Latinos. I love this show so much, and it is underrated.

Popping in briefly because I finally watched Transformers ONE!
It. Is.
OKAY! It’s pretty fun. Thoughts under the cut.
I was not wrong about a lot of the humour being quite bad. Not that there weren’t also moments that made me laugh but enough made me eye roll to not mention it. B-127 did get the worst of it, with perhaps one joke near the end that had me losing it while mostly wishing he was mute in this movie too.
It also really fell into the trap of what seems to be a lot of modern Transformers media trying to cram in as many iconic catchphrases as possible. It gets exasperating. Make a new one. That said there were a lot of little referential moments that made me smile! Like Wheeljack’s one major contributing factor to the story being accidentally blowing something up.
Story was alright, but felt really rushed to me. Like I get that they had an hour and a half to get everyone at least adjacent to their starting positions, and they did the best they could. But it still felt off. Particularly D-16 given his fall felt less like a descent and more like finding out one awful truth and plummeting off a cliff to become turbo-Hitler. Though I will say they do a decent enough job given the parameters. Things like Orion immediately going “okay how do we help everyone else?” and Dee going “I want personal revenge.” Highlights the main differences between them and why one of them is cut out to be a leader. Also things like Dee being the one to always stick to protocol and will be the leader whose style is very much “do as I say or die.” I will say they did a good job of actually making D-16 and Orion feel like friends with the limited time. Which is good, because I don’t know if the movie could have worked otherwise.
Nothing particularly surprising either. Though it’s kinda to be expected. Guessed Sentinel sold out Cybertron to the Quintessons well before the movie came out. And fortunately they don’t really expect you to care about robot politics besides “Sentinel Sucks”, though looking back I’m not sure why I was worried. Also I think he’s my favourite character. I’m a real sucker for fun villains as is probably very clear by now, and he is very fun. Even if the engineered confession was cliché. Part of this is probably also because I tend to like Jon Hamm. Which I guess brings me to the cast.
If I’m being totally honest the voices for none of the main four really work for me? Brian Tyree Henry is definitely the one who works the most to his credit. Hemsworth is… fine. He’s fine. He could be a lot worse. Though other than them most of the cast works well for me. Though I do still wish there was more respect for voice acting as an actual career by Hollywood. That said Soundwave’s voice was done well and that is all I ask.
As for things I just straight up enjoyed the animation is REALLY good. And I really like a lot of the designs! The bots, the train, THE QUINTESSON SHIP!!! Also kind of like the whole Fisher King thing Cybertron seems to have going on
[Cinematic Parallels]
And the fact it’s constantly transforming. The ACTION! So well done. All I really wanted was a thrilling punch-up between Optimus and Megatron and I GOT IT! There’s also the frequent use of blatant irony which is MY cringy dialogue trope! Favourite of course: “No more false prophets!” <- False prophet seconds before robot Jesus shows back up.
(Perhaps irony is not quite right but it did make me smile.)
And the most minor one, Oppy getting the Castlevania axe subweapon.
All in all I do hope we get a Transformers TWO. I think there’s more story to be told in this universe, it feels somewhat fresh. And I think with a bit more space to flesh things out it could be quite good! Also I just want to see the gang fight the Quintessons. (Big Quintesson fan here. #bringbacktheG1origin)
Was it the best Transformers film? No. That’s still Bumblebee, and by a country mile.
But was it a good time for the kids?
Yeah, I would think so! Mission accomplished.
