Did it
106 km in about 6 hours including that damn hill. 920 meters at the top. Warm Clear weather. Apparently I did a PB from the bottom of Taylor way to well up the highway. Taylor way is the steepest bit of this ride and of the Granfondo. It is 10% for about 0.5 km?
As usual it was hard work. I held long stretches of 200 Watts +. I had to stop a few times to shake out my legs and rest my bum. It would get sore then a minute of rest and I was fine again.
I finally remembered to measure the climb from sea level to the top. 21.21 km. The Official distance is 12 km from 1/4 vertically the way up the mountain. Those 220 meters of climb count too.
It was hard work.
Just as I got to the entrance to Cypress park two guys passed me. One asked, " How do your legs feel today?" I said, " I will know in an hour." I caught up to them at this look out point at 470 meters of elevation and one guy was complaining of cramps and thinking of turning around. He was older (my age?) and trying to keep up with a younger guy. That was the problem he was pushing too hard trying to keep up. I have a history of cramps. I managed to avoid any on the mountain today. Once I got home though I had to be careful how I bent my legs for a few hours.
I got to the top got some water and dumped one bottle on my head. I managed to use only two bottles for the way up. That was a worry. One full one for the trip down was more than enough. It is a fast trip down.
One thing is that the Blue Canyon Endurace bike does not feel solid at speed. I was holding the brakes to keep the speed under 50 kph going down. I descend that hill in Stanley Park at that speed. With my old Tarmac which is a racing frame I was ok doing 70 kph and hit 90 on a few occasions.
When I got home I was tired. I did not go into survival mode, I just had to keep a moderate pace for the last few km. My bike computer calculated that I should not ride again for 4 days. I was thinking of skipping my next weekday ride anyway.
The computer calculated I burned 2600 calories on the ride. I can see why losing weight is so hard. 3500 calories is one pound of fat.
So still alive. Did the deed.

Lake Sukko (Cypress Lake), or Blue Lake, is one of the most popular and photogenic locations in the vicinity of Anapa. Amazing trees with knotty roots and a pleasant resinous aroma grow here directly from the water. There are many speculations about the origin of the name of the lake. From the Adyghe toponym can be translated as “pond of wild boars.” There is also an option to interpret Sukko” as “su” - water and “kko” - pig or dolphin. The lake in Sukko was created artificially by building a dam on a river flowing into the Black Sea, which led to flooding of the valley. This reservoir covers an area of only 8 hectares. The height of Cypress Lake is 40 m above sea level. The lake became especially famous due to a unique experiment conducted in 1934–1935, when 32 swamp cypress trees were planted, which successfully took root and grew.Initially, the cypress trees were planted on dry land, but due to significant changes in the terrain, they eventually ended up in water. During periods of drought, the lake's water level drops, exposing the trees' extensive root systems. Cypress trees reach an impressive height of almost 30 meters, and their trunks can be up to half a meter wide. The grove is beautiful in almost any season: in the spring, the fresh foliage of coniferous trees is soft green, in the summer it acquires a darker and richer shade, and in the fall it blazes with bright orange or red. By winter, the trees completely shed their leaves, revealing branched crowns - which also has its own beauty.
Due to the abundance of limestone deposits, depending on the lighting, Lake Sukko can change color from delicate milky blue to rich turquoise. Blue Lake is not only famous for its cypress trees and crystal clear water, but also for the nature that surrounds it. The reservoir is located among a forest park with oaks and hornbeams, and on the northern side it is surrounded by the slopes of Mount Shirokaya. There is also a juniper grove nearby, which creates healing air in this area.

Landscape with the Castle of Massa di Carrara
Artist: Leo von Klenze (German, 1784 - 1864)
Date: 1827
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Getty Museum Collection, Los Angeles, CA, United States
Description
A late medieval castle stands on a hilltop overlooking small buildings, ruins, and olive and cypress trees. This work depicts Massa, a town near Genoa on the northwest coast of Italy. The painting is particularly rich in details: the leaves of the trees shimmer, the buildings' edges are precisely delineated, and the plain clothing worn by peasants in the foreground is carefully described. Leo von Klenze, who is primarily known as the chief architect and head of public works in Munich, was also an accomplished painter. Combining his talent for keen observation with an ability to improve upon nature, Klenze amended this vista of the Italian town. He adapted the greenery and borrowed different aspects from a range of prior sketches in order to enhance the stature of the lofty structure.

The Lions

The Lions, viewed from Black Mountain
Cypress Provincial Park, West Vancouver, British Columbia
March 1, 2025
The steep peaks of the Lions tower over Vancouver's North Shore. Easy to spot, but difficult to access, they lend their name to the Lions Gate Bridge that connects downtown Vancouver to the North Shore and beyond.
