Cyper: Master Cyclonis x Piper and why I think it's the best ship in Storm Hawks, everyone else is sleeping on it.

They match each other's personalities and interests

There is plenty of evidence in the show that they do have something going on.

Sheer missed opportunity.

Let's start with the basics.

Reason 1: Both Piper and Cyclonis are competitive intellectuals with similar obsessions in crystals and learning, Piper leans towards binging Atlases and Encyclopedias, she is a savant with Crystals but has limited book knowledge regarding them. Cyclonis is a genius. She is extremely inventive. Always innovating new ways to use crystals. Piper often marvels at Cyclonis’ inventions. Cyclonis respects Pipers sheer determination in learning Crysrals with barely a hint of a formal education. They compete to see who is the stronger Mage. And when Piper developed her own abilities, their rivalry deepened.

Interestingly enough, Piper has a dark streak. She's not averse to hypnotizing people if it makes things easier for her. Also, who the hell just casually has paralyzing crystals on their person? I rest my case, they both have darkness in them.

Ahem,

Reason 2: They canonically care about each other. It’s shown less from Piper’s side as they tend to have only short interactions save for the first time they meet. Storyboards had all but confirmed that Cyclonis is the one who concocted the storm that seperated Piper from her team. Which leads me to believe she might have also just been following them, invisibly most likely. She saves Piper as “Lark” and spends the rest of the day with Piper in disguise, chatting her up. They seemed to immediately hit it off in terms of shared interests.

Piper trusted her enough to take Lark onto the Condor and essentially give her a tour. When they get to Piper’s room, that’s when Cyclonis’ curiosity becomes a possible infatuation. She realizes Piper is not only someone versed with Crystals, but gifted. She admits she is actually lonely, and starts fumbling her cover, being overly defensive of her cloaker. Piper begins to suspect that Lark isn’t all that she seems, or perhaps did so earlier. Once they are flying, Cy’s impatience starts showing. And Piper’s suspicions are strengthened, only confirmed once Lark tries to keep her from telling the rest of the hawks about what they’d found.

This is where things get interesting.

Cyclonis changed her plan, I think she originally always planned to eliminate Piper. Once she’d established how important Piper was. But she instead takes a wild left turn and asks Piper to join her. Not serve her. Join her. As an equal. That’s huge. She’s essentially a dictator offering to cut her power in half for someone she just met.

That all but screams crush to me. Not to mention she laments her status’ isolation as she says “like you’d ever ask me to hang out” because her status and alignment makes the friendship she enjoyed all day impossible under normal circumstances.

Anyway, they scuffle, showing off their talents and apparently their knowledge of the other, getting to the moment that formed the bedrock of this ship for me.

The Oblivion Crystal

As an assassination tool, which Cyclonis intended it to be, it’s probably perfect. It instantly sends people to “oblivion” or whatever. Essentially the same as deleting them from existence. The sole condition being…you have to not care about who you are using it on.

That’s it, and for someone eliminating an enemy? It’s arguably perfect. No chance of killing allies. But Cyclonis was so desperate for connection and enamored with Piper that it didn’t work, (which btw, Piper knew it wouldn’t work since she does actually know Cyclonis).

Piper became important to her in a day. That’s how much they connected. She warps away, and we are robbed from seeing how this affected her afterwards, even though we do see how it affected Piper.

Piper is despondent, clearly she missed her “girlfriend” as she calls her later. Obviously not used in a romantic sense but it gives implications none the less.

Anywho, throughout the rest of the series, Cyclonis consistently, does not take the time to finish her off, often “saving her for last”. She seems to enjoy teasing Piper and Piper always takes the chance to do so back. Even during dire circumstances like the ending.

Anyway, that’s the “evidence” I have.

Reason 3: Missed opportunities and wasted potential. This is all the stuff I am trying to convey in my fic and my other works. The show feels like it’s almost avoiding the obvious full-length narrative that could have been told about these two.

Their shared interests, powers, and apparent destiny.

If the “binding” was actually a part of the lore from the get go. It would have been really cool to see Piper slowly discover her own nature. And what it means that she and Cyclonis are the only ones with these gifts. The show has so much missing lore that you can fill books with what we don’t know. (I literally have and so have many others). Their rivalry and the Lark deception should have been more prevalent and extended. Imagine how much better it would have been if the lie had gone on long enough for Cylonis to become conflicted. If she had more time to get even more deeply attached to Piper. Especially once Piper discovered her powers. (Restraining myself from mentioning my “Piper is a lost princess” theory).

Like, C’mon. Cyclonis desperately needed so much more screen time. If half of it was her in disguise it would recontextualize every single interaction Piper and “Lark” had throughout the whole series. If I could rewrite the whole show (an idea I play with constantly) then I would do that. It would also make the reveal more meaningful.

will you ever resume writing piper x cyclonis fanficion

Maybe one day, i would freaking love to, i fucking lovw Piper and Cyclonis and Aerrow and Ravess and Snipe and Stork and Finn and Junko and the Gunstaff and Lark and Ren and Radarr and all of them, i've watched Storm Hawks a not unimpressive amount of times and i love it to death i so want to write more for it, been distracted by more work than rest and also doing more reading than i used to, moving away from romance novels which i'm used to and reading some science fiction and fantasy, just haven't been writing much at all, and storm hawks is a genre i have very little experience actually seeing on text, that being fantasy, i only recently read the LOTR books thanks to the fanfic storm hawks and the dragon, and whenever i tried to write storm hawks i wanted to focus on romance but it felt like the setting was begging for more descirption than i could give it
