Tasting Notes

Saturday night in the Underground. On the surface world the week’s snow was melting, but none of that concerned us cellar dwellers. I had prepared for the day by taking several naps, but I wasn’t feeling all that great. I wasn’t really tired, but was hazy and light-headed. I spent a little time rotating some new records into the crates, pulling some of the new acquisitions in, taking some of the overplayed/unsuccessful titles out. The load feels heavier all the time. Imagine how much “easier” this would be as a 7” single DJ – well, not exactly easier, but lighter.

I envy the people who plan their sets in advance as much as the laptop DJs, but neither approach is a fit with my skill set, which works for me: having more records than I will use, and choosing from those based on the situation in place, and what I feel is working. 

I got going, found a good parking space, rolled down wet but clear sidewalks, down the elevator, and rolled to the booth. Bar is not crowded. Will is there. Tavis and CP behind the bar, Brando at the door. No CyberJewel. No chair to put my LP crate on. Will gets me one. I put the booth back in order. I’m 50 seconds late starting. I use one of my usual openers, Wire’s “Ahead,” which starts things off with a simulation of bell sounds, which I like to use to announce that the program has changed. I have several records like this, but am always looking for more. The opening song is the key to the whole set, in my opinion. 

I feel off, I’m fighting with the sound, trying to get things to sound even and seamless, and I have varying degrees of success with this. I’m trying to expand my technique, which is resolutely old school radio/club presenter style. Cutting out intros, beat matching, seamless segues. I want things to flow together in a way that may only make sense to me, but sound good. Some of it worked, some of it didn’t. I’ve been trying to learn to use headphones for more than just cueing records. It’s hard. I learned to use house sounds in my formative DJ years, and it’s proving to be useful tonight, because I am fighting with system volume. CyberJewel shows up to work and gets the sound situated, my backdrops set, and brings me an Athletic to go with the one Tavis supplied earlier. 

Nicky Mustard, Grace Horror and Alex Speedway are there right after 9. They are there to give a nod, play some Centipede and take in the scene. I threw in a bon bon for Nick, the Buzz Martin classic “Sick Of Settin’ Chokers,” in a particularly jarring place. I followed that with another PNW staple, “Lump” by The Presidents of the United States of America. Nick was about to leave, and he came up to the booth to tell me that he and Alex had a conversation about how I would follow that up, how they couldn’t think of a way out of that puzzle, and that they never in a million years would have expected the record I played next: “The Metro” by Berlin. 

It brings up a point about my methodology. I’m not just playing disparate things to be clever. I have no idea why putting those three records together would work. It just made sense to me. 

A rush of people come through the door, and suddenly the place is filled. They are super loud, and just like that we are busy. A couple of guys approach the booth, and I steel myself for the “Do you take requests” query, but they instead comment on my Mariners gear and talk baseball. 

My step-third-nephew Isaiah shows up with his person Toshi. So nice. They stay a little bit, play a few games, and head off to dinner. 

I had a couple punk rock sets mixed in, but I also played Foghat. For nearly the first time since I got in the booth I didn’t play ZZ Top. I left a lot of usuals out. The Sleaford Mods’ new record, a cover of Pet Shop Boys’ “West End Girls,” I left at home, because I couldn't find where I put it. I left the PSB out in solidarity (j/k). I wanted to do things differently, and I didn’t feel like it fit. I played a second predominantly guitar-oriented set after CyberJewel asked me to play some stuff that will liven her up. That’s how I got The Vibrators into the tracklist. 

It’s glaringly obvious to me that I have no control of my library. I’m just not sure it’s a bad thing. It keeps things interesting, I’ll say that. I kept finding things I wanted to play in the search for the Mods record – the Teardrop Explodes single “Treason,” for instance. My library is so unkempt I discover things hidden in it that I had forgotten I had. Of course, I’m partial to whatever I find, because I accumulated it in the first place, so I’m already predisposed. But it reminds me of my more social youth, where I would wander over to the host’s music collection and occupy myself playing their records for the party. I serve a similar function in the Underground.

Finally, I wanted to send a love letter to this place. It’s really special, and I feel privileged to be playing a part in it. I enjoy the noise, and the warmth, and even though I don’t drink alcohol, and I rarely play games, and I don’t need to find companions for the night, the parade of humanity pleases me. It’s great to see people having fun, and getting outside their usual environs. This place is always evolving, too – ideas are tried and kept, tried and discarded, moved around, moved up, moved out. It’s alive, and it remains fresh because of it. 

CyberJewel asked me if I had fun, and I didn’t know exactly how to answer right then, but I must be, because I make the effort, I think about it often, and even though I don’t plan anything ahead of time I do acquire records specifically to play in this setting. 

I will stay here, playing the third Saturday of every month, for as long as they want me. So, I will be back next month, 17 February 2024 at 9pm. Hope to see you then.

accidentally forgot my own oc lore for a bit

Miriam Cohen was the clan ripper, but was a wartime field medic before that. Bea has many memories of getting shots and check ups and being told, "You know, during the Fourth Corpo War we didn't get any stickers for not crying with a bullet hole in our arm." And "Okay Batty, you need stitches. This is gonna hurt like a bitch so let me tell you about this sucking chest wound I had to deal with."

She's probably partly responsible for Bea's love of horror and maybe a little bit of bloodlust. She loved indulging Bea's curiosity and would tell her all the gory details.

Miriam Cohen, lone survivor of the Cohen family massacre. She's Bea's first cousin, in her 40s. She got away because she's a trained combat medic and was busy hauling the injured away. Bea came in and distracted Frederick and his goons enough to get away. Unfortunately, every patient died from their wounds.

She joins up with the Merari family who contact Arnie and Greta Merari to tell them one Cohen is alive (they Cohen clan doesn't know Bea is alive, or anyone of the family). That's when Arnie and Greta convince Bea to go on a mission to reunite the clan.

The scar on her face is the same as V's. As soon as he meets her, he is immediately distrustful and accuses her of being a Raffen Shiv, as his scar was part of a new member ritual (when he accidentally fell in with a group when he was 16). However, she was kidnapped by Shiv at 20 and they forced the scarification on her.

This is a woman who has Seen Some Shit.

17. How deeply connected is your OC to their past? How do they feel about that connection—does it hinder or help them in any way?

Very. The memories before Arasaka are bittersweet and she has the most fondness for the memories celebrating holidays or playing outside in fierce storms. For the Arasaka training facility, she still has nightmares. She gets frustrated by the nightmares and trauma and often beats herself up about still letting it fuck her up. The other memories usually just make her sad but she hopes someday she can make new ones like that with V.

19. What traditions or stories does your OC carry forward from their childhood to the rest of their life?

So many! Mostly in how they celebrate certain Jewish holidays (I have to do some research to elaborate on this more but I intend to include pieces in the actual lore writeup I eventually do). But also superstitions about cars. Little things like certain colors of accessories being more lucky, opening the hood and touching specific parts a certain number of times depending on the length of drive and expected weather. For example, if it's gonna get really cold and the car will be sitting around for a while she'll whisper to the battery and tell it a story about a warm summer day in the hopes it somehow won't die. Like obviously she knows how cars work and the basic physics and how they work and knows this doesn't realistically help, but it feels good.

20. What were the most idyllic years of your OC's childhood? Does your OC miss those days?

6-11 they were traveling back and forth between PA and the Badlands and she loved staring out the window, watching the world pass by. If they were lucky, they'd stop at some old abandoned tourist attraction and get to explore a little. She does miss traveling a lot and sleeping under the stars.

Savory: Latkes.

Sweet: Bea I don't know but I think I've said it before? But I truly cannot remember. He's a human garbage disposal so he likes a lot of food. I think he loves Little Debbie and Hostess cakes, especially Twinkies.

Bea

Savory: Matzo Brei. Her mom would make it almost every morning for her.

Sweet: Anything milk chocolate!

Rat

Savory: Synth beef jerky. He's secretly kind of a connoisseur of flavors and collects vintage Macho Man Randy Savage Slim Jim merch.

Sweet: Anything fruity from pies to Starburst.

Honey

Savory: Synthbeef tacos.

Sweet: Apples dipped in honey. She's not Jewish but when she visited Bea and VG in the Cohen camp (after it was reestablished outside Night City) for Rosh Hashanah, she tried it and was hooked.

Miriam

Savory: Matzo ball soup. In the camp they'd make GIANT batches of it in a huge pot over the campfire.

Sweet: Dark chocolate! When Bea was younger she hated going to Miriam for her check ups because she only ever had dark chocolate and wondered why she couldn't have any normal candy.

Sandy

Savory: Blood of her enemies Sour cream and onion potato chips.

Sweet: Strawberry cheesecake! Okay part of why she likes it is because the strawberry compote dribble looks like blood.

Sally

Savory: Kugel! Normally it's sweet but Bea's mom had a great recipe for cheese Kugel that, even though Bea and Sally were sworn enemies, she still loved. Bea's mom would force her to bring Sally a plate and they'd just death glare at each other. But Bea was never mean about it, she never dropped it or threw it, she always handed it to her or set it down nicely. And as soon as she turned around to walk back, Sally would smile while she ate.

Sweet: Pecan pie.

Ah shit I gotta come up with something for Passover too maybe another one shot fic having a seder at the Glen loft with Arnie and Greta and Arnie complains about the auto-closing elevator gate and if V can disable it and eventually just puts a heavy box in front of it for the whole inviting Elijah in part so while they're back at the table there's just a repetitive muffled screeching and clanging thud over and over until Bea's autism misophonia gets triggered and she has to remove it and says some shit like Elijah can use the NCART to get here

Searching and sweeping up chametz is a group activity. People would try brushing the crumbs off into the dirt but you could always tell because there'd be a long line of ants leading in and out of their tent
