The “God of the Bloody tongue” is modified from design for a nameless monster from a dream Lovecraft had that was published as the story fragment “The Thing in the Moonlight” . Chaosium tinkered with and repurposed as one of their way-too-many boring generic evil god avatars of Nyarlathotep.
In the story fragment they were a strange monster in a nightmare realm that keeps appearing every night before a man. It does not seem to pursue, but just keeps being summoned wherever he is when night falls.
Naputaaku from Magu-chan, God of Destruction, brilliantly combines this body horror design with a starfish as part of the “everything looks like sea creatures despite many of them actualy being terrible with water” as a sort of meta-gag about Cthulhu, the most popular cosmic horror, actually being a land entity.
Though Naputaaku is one of the few that does well with water, he has developed thalassophobia (fear of the ocean) after the Fishing chapter.
Additionally, while giving the “howling” theme with a howl of madness (fitting int with the pop culture idea simplification of Lovecraft’s work as “go crazy from the sight or secrets” when in honestly much of his protagonists simply ended up suffering symptoms of at-the-time-still-unnamed PTSD for understandable reasons ), they make it a madness that breaks down entities whole personality like a nastier version of what bootcamp is supposed to do, just using terrible secrets of the universe rather than a drill sergeant.
They then combine this breaking down of living things psyche into the “master manipulator archetype”
And of course since this is Magu-Chan, this isn’t about them being a menace but following their journey of self-actualization as a b-plot to the hijinks of the main characters.
