Sorry if this is ranty but I need to get this out here.
That hit on Bedard was clean the reason Bedard got so injured (a fractured jaw) is because he was crouching trying to stay on the puck and Brendan Smith is just taller than him so Bedard was going to come into contact with him anyways. And than in the second period Nick Foligno fractured his left finger fighting Smith. Which I'm not mad about even though the hit was clean but Bedard is there star player he puts the food on the table at that point and he is out for (probably) 6 weeks.
But that brings me onto my second point of Bedard being this star player, people are going to hate him by hyped up by the media he is. And yes, it annoying. But you shouldn't cheer for when he gets injured he is 18 years old. He is still considered a kid. Fuck he can't even legally drink in his home country of Canada (19 year old is the legal drinking age).
In conclusion people cheer for Bedard being injured suck, people threatening Braden Smith suck, and the hit was clean the end result was just unfortunate.

so, the panthers won
theĀ ā€˜hawks did lose
but you know what? i donā€™t really think it matters
this isnā€™t a movie - evil isnā€™t defeated on the ice, fade to black, roll credits
evil is defeated by people like kyle beach bravely speaking out
evil is defeated by people like rick westhead pursuing the story
evil is defeated by everyone who has the courage to shine a light in the dark places
so long as we keep those lights shining, weā€™ll be alright

I feel like as a hockey blog I would be remiss if I didnā€™t mention anything about the Chicago story so here goes:
I stand with Kyle Beach, the other victims in this case, and all survivors of SA. What happened on the Blackhawks was an utter failure to protect victims and I hope all the people responsible for that failure are punished to the fullest extent and that the victims know what happened was not their fault and are able to find peace.
To survivors of SA who are hockey fans, especially those who may have been fans of the Blackhawks or Toews and Kane specifically, whose comments yesterday were disgusting - I am so sorry. You are not a distraction and you are not less than. You deserve so much better.Ā
I know these past few days have been hard for many people. I donā€™t pretend to have any mental health expertise of any kind, but if you just need to rant about this in a private space, my inbox/messages are open.
Take care of yourselves and your friends.

Hey so while all this is happening in the nhl please remember that it is very likely that we have survivors on the league, not just players but in staff too and not everyone is going to be able to talk about this subject even when asked and not eloquently or well. Chances are sooner or later someone is gonna shove a camera in a victim's face mmand ask horrible questions. Just... keep that in mind

"But what Iā€™m talking - with the angle on his skates - (thereā€™s the camera) - some guys play more like this. (Lundqvist holds his hands up so his palms are parallel, fingers in tight and pointing towards the camera.) [Ersson]ā€™s more of an inside guy ā€“ (Lundqvist changes the angle of his palms to face towards the ground, while remaining on a diagonal) which allows him to push right away to go side to side. We talked earlier in the show, his ability of coming up big on breakaways. Thatā€™s part of it. Being that low on that angle, and pushing quickly. So, love his game. Happy for him that heā€™s making most of this opportunity."
Henrik Lundqvist on Sam Ersson, PHI @ CHI, 2.21.24
Full transcript under the cut.

[Liam] McHugh: ā€œā€¦So now, you have Sam Ersson, who was gonna be the backup ā€“ He is the man now. He is well-liked on this team, it almost seems like theyā€™re all pulling for him, cheering for him, gonna call him the backbone of this team. The question is, can he be a number one if youā€™re going to the playoffs? [To Lundqvist:] What are you seeing?ā€
[Henrik] Lundqvist: ā€œYou know, this is a great opportunity for him. To me heā€™s making the most of it. Iā€™ve seen a bunch of clips of this guy playing now for months, and heā€™s moving really well ā€“ his edgework is so good; you see how low he stands here? So his edge work is so good- Some goalies put a lot of weight on their feet, just below their feet, but heā€™s more of an inside guy and that allows him to push side to side so quickly, and in control. And again, when you do get this opportunity to make the most of it, he earned the right to, you know, letā€™s see how far he can take it! And if they make the playoffs, you know, he can definitely make it happen and heā€™s not 20, heā€™s 24. He has experience.
"But what Iā€™m talking - with the angle on his skates - (thereā€™s the camera) - some guys play more like this. [Lundqvist holds his hands up so his palms are parallel, fingers in tight and pointing towards the camera.] Heā€™s more of an inside guy ā€“ [Lundqvist changes the angle of his palms to face towards the ground, while remaining on a diagonal] which allows him to push right away to go side to side. We talked earlier in the show, his ability of coming up big on breakaways. Thatā€™s part of it. Being that low on that angle, and pushing quickly. So, love his game. Happy for him that heā€™s making most of this opportunity.ā€
[Anson] Carter: ā€œThat made complete senseā€“"
McHugh: "Before, earlier, we were backstageā€“"
Carter: "Hank was doing this ā€“ [makes the palms-towards-the-ground motion with his hands]"
McHugh: "Not talking to us, but doing [hands parallel, then diagonal, then parallel again] and the two of us were just, what are youā€¦ā€
Lundqvist: "Iā€™m trying to figure out - when I played, I was also on the inside angle, especially on breakaways ā€“ [hands diagonal] and thatā€™s what I see from him, like when heā€™s, especially in tight, so sitting in the green room, just going, [makes motion] so hopefully I made sense! Hopefullyā€¦ā€
-trails off.

unsurprisingly it's me trying to come up with something to say. I've seen so many blogs I follow making posts in regards to other issues that the NHL has had, that I wanted to say something as someone who grew up and lives in Chicago and spent a lot of time growing up cheering for that era of the team.
Kyle Beach deserved so much better than he got from the Blackhawks and I don't think that can be said enough. This was a man who had his career ruined because he was being called a character issue. Whenever professional hockey does that, it's a worrying sign - someone like Kyle Beach can be labeled a character issue, but someone like logan Malioux or TDA gets another chance. I'm genuinely enraged that Q was allowed to coach tonight and I know that I'll be genuinely shocked if Bettman does anything to Q or the Panthers. (tbh I would be shocked if there was any sort of suspension but that would at least be a shred of decency)
I think every time I try to write down how I feel about this, I just lose the ability to even verbalize how I feel because there are so many things you want to say but words never seem quite right.
