am i metroid or vania?
definitely metroid
#I haven’t played nearly as much Metroid as castlevania only the original and zero mission but from the vibes you’re more metroid#more exploration and ability focused than cv which is more combat and world focused and you’re more the former I think#don’t ask me to explain how or why I couldn’t#it’s also a bit of just a simple sci fi fantasy divide and you’re more sci fi to me#asks

My own little healthcare tale.
I have been in a state of constant distress this entire week because I ran out of my ADHD medication and Walgreens was out of it because it's a controlled substance and manufacturing has been limited by the war on drugs.
I ran out on Tuesday. Withdrawl hits after 36 hours and lasts weeks. You're not supposed to quit cold turkey, but I've got no choice.
So after leaving message after message, I finally find a CVS in town that has it. I call my doctor, they call it in (right before going home on Friday). I even get a call from the receptionist saying that they'd called it in to the CVS I gave them the cross streets for.
CVS is all "we didn't get any authorization."
So what looks like has happened is the CVS that I told my doctor's office to call it into is across the street from a Target that also has a CVS in it.
The present theory is that my doctor's office called the CVS in the Target. Fine, we go across the street.
That one closes at 6 and isn't open on the weekends.
So I'm in for a real frickin' rough time this weekend. If you've noticed I've posted less and have been more crabby this week, this is the reason.
It has destroyed any hope I have of getting my freelance together this week like I both wanted and needed. I need to make $100 happen very shortly or they're gonna shut off my power. so if you can, help is very, very welcome.

Happy Birthday to the actor Tony Curran born 13th December 1969 in Glasgow.

Last year Tony appeared in a homegrown project. The two part “series”, Mayflies is set in a Scotland and Manchester in the 80′s Martin Compston co-stars along with new Shetland star Ashley Jensen, it is on BBC1 on December 28th. The show is based on a novel by Scottish author Andrew O'Hagan's book of the same name. It tells the story of Jimmy (Compston) and Tully (Curran) who ignite an “unforgettable friendship” defined by music, films and their shared rebellious spirit in a small Scottish town in the 1980s. if you haven't seen it, please look it up, and keep the hankies close by.
In the past couple of years Tony has appeared in a couple of US series, an unexpected second season of Your Honor and Secret Invasion.
On fame Tony commented;
"I've been lucky. I don't for a minute take for granted the good fortune I have had. You don't like to get ideas above your station, especially a boy from the south side of Glasgow."

2023: Writing, Art, and Medication
So, I need to preface this by admitting something.
January 2023 was when I started taking Wellbutrin. I have MDD and severe hypotension (low blood pressure).
Imagine rediscovering a favorite toy, game, or book that you've forgotten about. You find it, dust it off, and get lost in it again. And my, it is magical. You're so happy, you're giddy, you make up things to do to get further into it.
This isn't about me rediscovering fandom, or Star Wars. It's about re-discovering my emotions and my creativity. Because of medication.
I used to devour fantasy and sci-fi for fun. I wrote most of a series of silly novels in middle and high school. They were never published and put aside for academic or paid work. MDD crept up and strangled it, too.
Finally, I'm a working parent and spouse, and if it didn't have a spot on my CV or gave me money for completion, it wasn't going to get done.
Wellbutrin said fuck that noise, let's get CREATIVE. Let's have FUN FOR ONCE.
And low and behold, I start watching Star Wars cartoons with my youngest daughter in January 2023. She saw Tech on the screen with no helmet, screamed 'Dada!' and that's how I got yanked into The Bad Batch.
After watching two episodes with her, I wondered what it would be like if Tech met someone from The Expanse, maybe a female pilot. They'd chat, maybe hook up, and move on with their lives.
Wellbutrin also said fuck that noise, you wrote a dissertation and have multiple articles and short stories published, why not combine the two?
Wellbutrin also said you work in science communication, why not explore physics and biology from both angles?
And, while you're at it, why not have Tech and the Belter have a deeper relationship? What if they had a kid? What would happen to them, physically? Would the Empire view them as property? Would they be seen as a Belter? What are the cultural ramifications of this?
I didn't write an OC to fantasize about being with a fictional character: I wrote her, and even more OCs in the extended universe, to better understand both the worlds of The Expanse and Star Wars. It has been so, so, so fucking joyful to do so.
The longfic, which probably needs no introduction at this point, is Far Past the Ring. It was started in early February, began to be published in April, and finished in November. It is the length of a novel and thus, the most work came out of it. Most of my artwork is centered around it as well.
The art can be found here, but of all the pieces I myself have composed, I think the favorite is the one below. It was one of the first things I ever decided regarding their relationship...that something considered deviant, even on a natborn (receding hairline), is seen as personal, quirky, and wonderful.

5 things Metroid does better than Castlevania VS 5 things Castlevania does better than Metroid!
Metroid > Castlevania
5) story arc, benefiting of having one protagonist
4) creepiness. Some CV games have creepy tracks at most, but Metroid really leans into the unsettling vibe, even in more modern games
3) making the world feel alive. You are not exploring a map, but an alien planet/artificial facility that hates you. It's all in the details
2) sense of speed. Metroid games are made to be nyoomed lol, and Samus' moveset and arsenal reflects that - in most games she's super fun to control. Tied to this, sequence breaking!
1) general quality of the games lmao, Metroid is one of the most consistent series I've played
Castlevania > Metroid
5) general lore, thanks to the extended timeline and the many stories that mirror each other, creating a tale of cycle of fate
4) music. sorry Metroid your games have some incredible soundtracks but CV's are much more consistent in quality, and that's not even mentioning Michiru Yamane on her own
3) depth of gameplay. Metroid games are speed based, but CV games (mostly Igavanias) tend to have more gimmicks, and that's another way to incentivize replayability
2) fair challenge, mainly the Classicvanias. Well, not all of them lmao, but compare the source of difficulty in CV1 to the one in M1
1) iconic vibes lol. Metroid is a really good sci-fi, but CV has its own unique gothic style :3

You joined the crew 6 months ago as a replacement for an elderly mechanic who finally retired after a lifetime of serving on stations the galaxy over.
It was hard to fit in at first; everyone else on the crew has been here since day 1, after all (that's the thing about deep space outposts, they're not exactly easy to get to, so the station & the crew are usually assembled together) but over the last couple of months you've really started to find your niche.
You expected the feeling of being watched to fade over time, as people got used to you & stopped side-eyeing the newcomer (not that you ever saw them doing this, but that's what it felt like was happening). Instead, the closer you get to the rest of the crew, the more the feeling increases. It's a good job you bunk with 3 other crewmates or you don't think you'd ever get any sleep. As it is, you still wake up several times a night in a cold sweat.
You didn't even consider the AI as a possibility until that day in the breakroom when everyone was joking around with it & telling it it was the best AI ever & you realised the AI you knew was completely different to the one everyone else knew. Ingratiating & helpful, yes. But also strangely nosy, like it needed to know highly specific details about your motivation before it would do anything for you. Everyone else says it seems to know what they're thinking without asking. Of course, it was programmed with them in mind. It wasn't programmed for you. You're not Greg. (Not that that should make a difference, but no matter how you look at things apparently it does.)
Last week you tried to get a message out to a pal of yours who's an expert in AI. It wouldn't send. The messages to your family got off just fine. So did the one to your friend in a different department at the same university (you felt a bit guilty about using them to test your theory - after all, you probably would've gone another 5 years without talking if not for the current situation - but it's not like anything you said was a lie, it just wasn't the whole picture).
You don't dare tell anyone on board; they'll either think you're crazy (& you do really need this job - there's always a reason people end up in the deeps), or you'll be putting them under the AI's scrutiny, too, & you can't risk that. Not while none of you can leave.
For now, you'll just have to watch the AI as closely as it's watching you. But carefully. You don't want anyone thinking you're obsessed with it....
Writing Prompt I'm Not Going To Use But You Can If You Want:
Aboard the Space Station, the Station AI is everyone's friend. They're kind, understanding, funny and a good listener.
Except, they're obsessed with you.
They are the Station, so you have no way to get away from them, and their advances are getting more and more unwanted. They do not take no for an answer, and you're pretty sure they're watching you wherever you are.
#writing prompts#writing inspiration#writeblr#sci fi#(not sure I fully conveyed my idea here - the ending is definitely weak:#the AI is obsessed with the one person on board whose details were not programmed into it on day 1#instead it woke up one day with 'new memories' of them#& the type of data was in a different format/programming language/whatever makes sense from a software perspective#basically it got to 'know' the initial crew on a personal level; their data was used to help create its personality#but for the new guy it just got (the equivalent of) a cv & medical history#& it's a) fascinated & b) terrified by this person walking around inside it who it knows nothing (from an AI perspective) about#unfortunately it's social skills are limited#(it was only given rudimentary emotion-simulation; enough to appear friendly not enough to actually form connections)#& when the bit of it that says 'be friendly at all times' tries to find the appropriate 'friendly' data for the new guy it comes up blank#but it doesn't have the subroutines to learn that for itself#(get to know the crew isn't a priority when you're tasked with 3#3000 tasks a second & that data was already meant to be input anyway)#so now it's just accumulating stalker-level data with no way to incorporate it properly#meaning it never gets any friendlier#& it's a race against time to find out it if either manages to write the right code itself#- which would cause a whole mess of other problems -#or overloads under the weight of the data & either crashes or decides to 'deal with the anomoly'.... physically#I've just realised I should've written from the AI's perspective#(though dual perspective: human & AI getting increasingly freaked out for opposite reasons could also be good....#each of them trying & failing to understand the other#& becoming increasingly erratic#which only escaltes matters further....)#ai

Let's start with a run-of-the-mill Stormlight college AU!
For the Five Headcanons ask game Ok I've spent some time thinking about this based on people and situations from my real life college experience. Enjoy!
1. Shallan has no money to attend college but she has great ideas, so she takes a job as a janitor to get close to the prof she really wants to collaborate with. She's so persuasive and charismatic that she is successful in convincing the prof to work with her, and despite the fact she didn't finish high school, they go on to publish some really cool papers together while she earns enough money to start attending university part time.
2. Sebarial started school in first year very ambitious and serious, but after starting to date a very average-looking woman named Palona, he changes his major to something much more pedestrian (let's say from poli sci to accounting). Everyone in residence talks about them behind their backs, criticizing her especially for "changing" him; however, he seems much more relaxed and jokey now, and in the years afterwards they get married and seem very happy together.
3. Before applying to a research position, Jasnah asks around for tips on how to interview for it. She is told that the lead researcher only hires women if they have big tits, and advise her to show off her tits if she wants to be hired. Jasnah really wants the position so she wears a deep vee on interview day. As she discusses her qualifications, the lead researcher stares at her tits. Then he looks at her CV and says, "You have a 100% average in your relevant classes? Alright, you're hired." She never finds out which one of those things did it, but now she wears turtlenecks whenever she works.
4. The Lopen brings in a big tub of homemade one-bite brownies and walks around the school at 11am offering them out, leaving behind a random small percentage of the campus who within 30-60 minutes are all so blisteringly high they need help getting home!!! 😠 Do not do this in real life!! Funny for a fic though lmao
5. Kaladin goes into social work and frequently feels very overwhelmed by how much responsibility the job will be. One day he hears in class, "It's okay if you only ever save one person, and it's okay if that one person is you." Suddenly the weight is lifted from him, and he has to run to the bathroom so he can cry in relief.

I put together an appreciation post for the casting on The Night Mothers, since the SAG strike is not yet resolved (but hopefully will be by next week. Hopefully), I thought I'd give these artists some extra appreciation in their extraordinary supporting roles.
Their screen presences left a strong impression as they portrayed Witches of Dathomir in live-action for the first time. Very mysterious and powerful. These three characters were crucial to the world-building and atmosphere on Peridea surrounding Thrawn.
As others have pointed out, the names Aktropaw, Klothow, and Lakesis evoke the fates of Greek myth, Atropos, Clotho, and Lachesis.
Aktropaw - portrayed by Jeryl Prescott
Jeryl Prescott has a long IMDB cv, working on many shows including The Walking Dead. She has a PhD in American Lit.
Klothow - portrayed by Claudia Black
Claudia Black is known to a lot of people as a sci-fi legend. She was in Farscape, Stargate, and a lot of other things. She was born in Australia and has also done stage work such as playing Portia in a touring production of The Merchant of Venice.
Lakesis - portrayed by Jane Edwina Seymour Jane Edwina Seymour also has a long list of IMDB credits in various shows, films, and shorts, and did the body acting (with voice by Alice Krige) for The Borg Queen in Star Trek: Picard season 3.

Silly Game Time: Who are some of your favorite fighter characters? And what do you like about them?
They can weild any weapon (swords, spears, axes, clubs, knives, bare hands, etc.); they can be of any class or variety of combatant (ones who rely on strength like brawlers or berserkers, ones who use finesse like martial artists or technique masters, ones who balance defensive and offensive equipment like knghts or samurai, etc.); they can be of any race or species (from fantasy or sci-fi); they can even have access to special powers to improve their combat skills (magical, psychic, technological, superpowers, etc.).
What matters is that one of their primary skills, roles in the story, and traits as a character is physical fighting.
So, there are a LOT, and I mean a LOT of possible entries here. Flying Punching Juan, my OC superpowered greaser? Chaz Ashley, from Phantasy Star IV? Cranston Snord, from Battletech?
I think I'm going to pick three.
First off, my manga/anime pick, Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z. Yeah, the grumpy-ass one. Why? Because A) he's the only one smart enough to realize when he's been placed up against a gag manga character, B) he and Bulma are weirdly adorable together, and C) oh my god he has SO MUCH FANFIC POTENTIAL. SO MUCH. With DBZ the fic is better than the core material often, and Vegeta-centered fics are often some of my faves.
Second, from a Pathfinder/D&D campaign, Jenkins. Now, Jenkins wasn't a PC, he was a hireling, a follower from the Leadership feat. His leader/PC was a gunslinger, so he was a long-gun specialist. Quiet. Professional. Basically a more British version of the Sniper from TF2, always ready with a high-caliber shot from a great distance when needed. His master was the swashbuckling badass, Jenkins was the bulwark of stoic coolness that didn't NEED to swashbuckle. Over the course of the campaign the PCs got involved in a plot to overthrow Demogorgon as lord of hell. Long story there, but they succeeded (Jenkins personally landing a finishing blow on no less than three other major targets, including DAGON), and then everyone lunged for the crown at once. Including their allies, the other lords of hell.
Jenkins was in the right place at the right time. He nabbed it. Put it on. Cowed all of hell... and then muttered "well, that's a helluva thing for the CV." And then he tossed the crown on the party witch's head... and walked out of hell.
Jenkins STILL exists in my campaigns, operating at an epic level, usually only heard of in myth.
Lastly, my pro wrestler pick. ORANGE CASSIDY. The king of Sloth Style. The laziest pro wrestler of all time. And arguably one of the best. Orange can actually GO when he's pushed, and he's the master of the Orange Punch. He USED to be a heel, known for spraying OJ in his opponents' eyes. Evidently that was too much effort.

hello :) i found your account because i am a teen interested in a career in scientific illustration. can you tell me more about it? and respectfully i would like to ask: is it a viable career? thank you and i wish you all the best 🪴😊
[Velwyrm: Hello and welcome!
And yes, it certainly is and has been for hundreds of years! Important career for all sorts of reasons and still heavily used.
Honestly I’m mostly in the sciences than I am in the art world, even though I draw nearly every day, but I know that it’s very much recommend to have a degree in Biology/Botany/Zoology (like I’m doing currently) especially if you’re going into the medical sciences for Sci-Illustration.
I feel like, personally if you aren’t in a position where you are already in the science world (e.g. museum work, science magazine work, etc), and aren’t currently doing an art degree (which can also be an in for this kind of work) then you can still become a Sci Illustrator, it’ll just a more of an awkward, harder and longer journey unless you’re lucky. Like with any Bio & Art career, you need study your subjects hard & be well-practiced.
People can get snapped up by companies on Instagram etc. for an artist’s independent work, but this is very rare and you usually need a large following. It’s never worked for me, and I wouldn’t recommend hoping that one day someone will notice you 10 years down the line. I’d still keep a port folio regardless of what you decide to do though.
So, a good place to start out completely without a very expensive degree (which is very much worth it, providing you network with people and gain as much experience/oppertunities as possible too) is to practice, and practice, and practice. Go out in nature and sketch/paint, draw copies of animal photos online or in nature books, take Skill Share courses. I would recommend this especially because if they give you a certificate at the end, then you can mention it on your CV. Shows that you’re going out of your way to learn.
If you’re confident, then another good place to help build your CV would be to contact charity organisations (linked to animals or plants) through Linked In or their own websites, offer to illustrate some things for them with your artwork attached.
Charities often appreciate any help they can get, are usually nice to work with, and it’ll give you some professional experience. If they turn you down then, hey, you can still ask them where to improve and who to seek out next.
I only have a diploma in Animation as the highest level of an art degree, but I would also look online to see any if there are remote (work at home) Sci Illustration degrees, or if your local colleges or universities offer them (mine do not) then you’ve got a clear path.
This might be very messy to read but I hope it gave you some starting points, that I, myself would take if not for the current path I’m going down. I’m still planning to take some skill share courses myself! Our ability to learn and grow is immeasurable.
Even just reading this and reaching out: Congrats! You’re already well on your way to becoming a scientific illustrator! Now use that bravery to reach out to charities or colleges and go get that career 💖]

Thank you for the tag @anyablackwood! I've never got to do anything for my OCs before 😁 I'm going to use my main from Decompose (a YA sci-fi novel), he's called Harry Thorpe.
Are you named after anyone?
My grandpa I think.
When was the last time you cried?
Um, I don't feel comfortable answering.
Do you have kids?
Nah, I'm only 16... Someday, maybe.
Do you use sarcasm a lot?
Me? Nooo... 👀 My sister Delilah uses it more though.
What's the first thing you notice about people?
Their hands. Their shoes.
What's your eye colour?
Murky blue.
Scary movies or happy endings?
I'd much prefer a happy endings these days.
Any special talents?
Norah says I read at a freakish rate. Isaac says I'm a good kisser if that counts...
Where were you born?
London, British Kingdom.
Do you have any pets?
What's a pet again? Oh no, those haven't been allowed for years.
What sort of sports do you play?
Are you having a laugh?
How tall are you?
5"7
What is your favorite subject in school?
English, although I miss how many books we used to get through in my old sector.
What is your dream job?
I'm not sure what jobs I could even do now. Moving to a new sector has changed things. And well, joining an underground rebellion isn't exactly great on a CV. Maybe a writer. Definitely got a story to tell.
I'm going to do an open tag, please tag me if you take it, I want to hear about your OCs 💖
