I do not ever want to hear another northern Chinese person complain about southern accents ever again. Just interviewed a guy with a super thick northern accent from who knows what province as part of my job and I comprehended like at most only 70% of what he was saying. Truly horrific.

I'm coming back to add to the language headcanons because I have more thoughts/revisions.
-I'm keeping the headcanon that if he was to know at least one extra language aside from English, it would be Mandarin, but if he knew two extra languages then I'm actually gonna place more bets on something like French. Since his father seems to have an inclination for Western things judging by the architecture of his house, the food he eats, and the car he drives, I would think his father would make it that Akashi is fluent in two Eastern languages and two Western languages to make it even. I personally think French would really suit Akashi. Maybe he might study Korean in his free time, though. He pegs me as the type to learn new languages when he's bored.
-Now, back to English, I would think after Extra Game when Akashi is smack-talking Team Jabberwock in English, Kagami prods Akashi about it later. And when he realizes Akashi is also fluent, their friendship strengthens a lot more. Now, whenever they talk, they switch back and forth pretty frequently between English and Japanese. Sometimes, if Kagami can't find the word he's looking for in Japanese, he'll switch to English mid-sentence and then switch back to Japanese, and Akashi finds it so amusing.
-Another thing is that Akashi either speaks pretty formal or pretty neutral English and doesn't dip into casual English expressions the way Kagami does, so he's not up to date on current English slang the way Kagami is, especially because Kagami still keeps in touch with old friends from LA. So when Kagami says shit like "that's lit" or "let him cook," Akashi kinda looks at him like ❓️❓️❓️ cuz what is being lit, and who is cooking what? Kagami then has to sit him down and teach him all the American English slang he knows. Akashi tries to use some of it while he's being taught, immediately cringes at the way the words sound on his tongue, and vows to never use any slang again.
-Oh, and I bet in Teiko when they went to Hawaii, Akashi was the designated translator along with maybe Midorima. Saving these basketball dorks in their team by reading the airport signs and everything.
-Akashi probably watches a lot of foreign films, too. I remember in the Replace chapters, Akashi said his favorite actress was Audrey Hepburn, and in an interview with Fujimaki (or maybe it was also Replace Plus idr), it was said that Akashi's favorite movie was The Godfather. So not only does he consume a lot of foreign films, but he seems to prefer a lot of old foreign classics. This makes it tough for him to have movie nights with the other peeps in the Teiko gang (cuz let's be honest AoKise are NAWT watching those old films a lot of them can sometimes be very slow-paced), but the Rakuzan folks don't mind watching those kinds of films.
-Before traveling to another country, Akashi will learn common words and phrases in that country's native language so he can get around and communicate with locals. He likes having the independence to navigate by himself and also learn more about the country when he's there.
Anyway, I'm out rn, and I'm not tryna drain my battery using my data, so I'll stop here. Add more headcanons to mine if you like!
Random Akashi headcanon that's been bouncing around my head for days, but obviously we know from Extra/Last Game that he's fluent in English, right? I have a headcanon that he's actually trilingual at the very least. Because he's the heir to a big business, I would assume Akashi has been taught to be at least conversational, if not fluent, in one or a couple other languages. Preferably the languages of the countries his father does business in. I would assume Masaomi does business in neighboring countries to Japan, so Akashi would probably know either Mandarin, Korean, or both.

im thinking of doing a big language accessibility project where I work on archiving mogai terms in other languages but it’s honestly very daunting so I’m a little concerned. And i only speak 4 languages so like I could only do those languages but if others know other languages as well I’m thinking we could sort of combine efforts and try and do the best we can? cuz I know not everyone in this community is a native English speaker and as it stands rn the mogai community is very American English centered so I just want to like. Expand it. I speak Spanish Italian and Mandarin so I’ll probably work on those but I am also trying to learn Hindi and Arabic so maybe I can try with those when I get better? Idk I’m just rambling at this point but if you’re multilingual and interested in a project like this then lmk!!

a culture-related question for my fav 🇧🇷 writer!! 🙋💛
how different do you think brazillian portugese is compared to portugal's portugese? are brazillians more familiar with portugals portugese, or it's the other way round?
(does this question make sense? ><" for instance, my native language is mandarin, but i grew up with taiwanese & hong kong entertainment so im more familiar with their culture and stuff, but when i actually meet the people from mainland china/taiwan/hk, they often find our accent amusing cuz it's really "not standard" 😅 and is mixed with a lot of local slangs, a few of them don't understand what i was saying at first haha i guess my accent is really thick 😅😅)
Oh I'm blushing 🥰 Yes it made sense! I'll try to explain it in a way that doesn't seem too confusing. For us Brazilians, it's not that different but for those from Portugal, yes. For what I have seen. Like, we ended up understanding most Latin languages even though we don't speak them fluently because they're all very similar to our Portuguese. I think that's why for us it's not a big difference. But I think we're easier to understand than them because there are many expressions that we create that no one knows what it means except us 🤣🤣 I think that makes the way we speak ends up becoming more difficult for them. Even if there some words have a different meaning than ours and the accent is different, we can still understand but the opposite doesn't happen often. I hope I managed to explain it without seeming confusing lol So you speak all these languages? 😱 Accent is something very complicated, even within Brasil there are different accents depending on the region you live in so even if you live in the same country, the way you speak is different 🤣🤣

what languages do you use/reference on these kids speaking in childish anger, if i may ask? from the looks of ch2 it's implied Six speaks Chinese from Mono's attempt in pronouncing their word, and it seems that there's another two introduced from RK-Flicker and another random character in the cafeteria. and i like how you interpret RK as a clever little gremlin and a multilingual, since i always headcanon him being smarter than the other two protags in a way.
so, i don’t want there to be really any concrete “these are 100% what each kid is using” cuz i think a part of the Charm of the LN world is that it just plain isn’t our own, so while i am mentally referencing certain languages it’s not meant to be taken as like. 1 to 1 to our world and i think it’s fun when people come up with their own idea on who is speaking like what.
that in mind, i do refer to these for each of the kiddos:
six: mandarin! so yea, chinese. i chose that as i thought it’d be neat and ironic for the character whose had a rough time communicating to speak what is technically the most spoken language on earth.
mono: french and english! able to read a bit of hiragana/katakana but like not use it.
flicker: spanish, can also mostly speak french, some english, hardly any mandarin. is multi-lingual but not fluent in much, when speaking with the other maw kids i imagine they’ve developed a sort of like. esperanto, mixed language, with each hall of kids having a bit of a different take. could also be interpreted as variations of pidgin languages!
rk: soaks up spoken words like a sponge, habitually takes scraps of written letters and notes they find to work out how to read them. haven’t really decided on what his native language would have been, seen folks suggest russian for him which i think would be neat. is fluent in more languages than flicker and also quick to pick up on more, has preferences on what he likes using.
also yeah, i like. haven’t ever seen much fandom acknowledgment on how rk is a runaway and has been pulling stunts for a while probably? lil troublemaker got a chain left on his leg for some reason and i say the reason is he refuses to stop trying to break outta there and is like. incredibly lucky. until he’s not anyways.

how many languages do you think magnus can speak? (and cat and ragnor and even raphael)
great question!!!! id like to preface this by saying "a lot" cuz tbh i think magnus is the kind of guy who likes to learn languages and who can learn them with relative ease (like seeing the way he pronounced "lorenzo rey" so perfectly i think it indicates to someone having ease with languages you know what i mean? he switched from english to spanish super quick and effortlessly) but the ones i think he definitely speaks:
obviously "indonesian" (indonesian didn't exist at the time he was born but malay, which indonesian derived from, was the universal language in indonesia so ya know)
i like to think he'd speak javanese as well but i think that's kind of unlikely considering how he always implied indonesian/malay to be his first language :/ and if that were his first language then he probably wouldn't have a need to speak javanese. i think it might have been because his stepfather wouldn't want him to be taught javanese, and at the time the dutch colonizers spoke malay with the natives at home and all according to what i've read. but there's also the possibility that he'd learn it later because he'd want to learn his mother's native tongue you know, even if he could no longer speak it with her. maybe sometimes he kind of "prays" to her in javanese. haha im fine
he probably speaks or used to speak (cuz i think after a while it would become rusty esp since he probably only associates it with bad moments/things) dutch even if only a little (again according to my research most mixed families in indonesia in the 17th century spoke malay at home, so)
he DEFINITELY speaks spanish, and pretty well if the way he pronounced lorenzo rey was any indication (again not only the perfect pronunciation but the very easy switch that would indicate he was very familiar with the language). not to mention it makes sense since he dated imasu (who was peruvian) for quite a while and also raised raphael
obviously he speaks english udhaiudhsa both US american and british english since it was (implied? said?) that he used to live in england before he went to the US
he probably speaks french as it used to be the lingua franca (in the western world) up until 1919
he probably speaks whatever asmodeus' language is? probably some demonic language other than french i mean or whatever. of course asmodeus is probably omnilingual or something of the sort if he can go around having kids with ppl from all around the world in so many different times daiohdajosi but i think he would want magnus to speak... edomese? or something since his plan was always that magnus would rule edom by his side anyway
he probably speaks the seelie language (or at least one of the seelie languages if they have multiple)! whatever that is. i totally think he would want to learn it just because it would make him able to communicate with such a huge amount of people and also would probably make it easier to read some untranslated books on magic, you know, stuff like that. so i can definitely see that being a thing
i like to think he learns quechua for imasu uwu
i like to think he learnt catarina's native tongue! and that she also learnt malay/indonesian you know daijdaosi because they are soft bitches and they know how lonely it is to not ever be able to speak your native tongue (both due to separation from your land and just the fact that language evolved with time so no one alive REALLY speaks their language you know). they might not be fluent but they know it well enough to hold a conversation or to use pet names and stuff like that
and that's the specifics i have! but again i do believe magnus would like to learn a lot of languages, sometimes just for the shits (hyperfocusing on languages anyone??) esp because he has, you know, infinite time daohdsaoij and i think he would like to learn new languages and speak as many as he could. so yeah i definitely think there are more. he would probably speak most languages that have a lot of speakers like arabic (at least standart arabic), mandarin/chinese, hindi/urdu, bengali, etc. just found out portuguese is the 7th most spoken language in the world so i'm gonna go ahead and hc that he speaks brazilian portuguese (the most common branch) because i: can. and then some just for the shits because he wanted to and/or found them beautiful like swahili, yoruba, guaraní, etc
i think ragnor only speaks english tbh dajdsaodijaoidsja he seems very Monolingual but maybe it's just the White Anglo vibes that ooze that kind of entitlement doaijdosaj either way i think he would know at least pet names in indonesian/malay, whatever catarina's first language is, and spanish, for his friends. possibly also french because again it used to be the lingua franca up until very recently
catarina i think is definitely like magnus in the sense that she loves learning and speaking new languages! i like to hc her as native african but i haven't really decided on which ethnicity she would be so idk what language that would be. then obviously there is whichever language the colonizers imposed on the country she lived in. then: probably arabic (particularly if she's from north africa), english, indonesian for magnus, spanish for raphael, probably french because lingua franca, and i hc she just likes learning languages from the other native groups near where she's from? i also like to think she likes to learn languages that are at risk of extinction because she thinks it would be such a shame to actually let them die and she knows the pain of seeing ur language be smothered like that. so she speaks a lot of languages with few native speakers and she loves it. she also uses that to learn more about their medicinal practices because you know, she IS a nurse AND a warlock and there's so much to learn you know. also good opportunity to use her knowledge :) so yeah
as for raphael i think he only speaks english and spanish, as well as indonesian and cat's native tongue. he hasn't lived as long as they have and he's been busy and struggling(tm) for a lot of his life so he hasn't had the time to learn as many languages as they do. i think over time he would also want to learn yiddish for simon and meliorn's language because i can and will shove the polycule wherever i can lmao. and yeah that's what i have :) thanks for asking, i had fun with this

last reblog:
I actually noticed some fics spelt the 'island' wrong but I never have to courage to tell the fic writers sgdgdgdhdhk
actually some of the hc that the fandom has for philippa sometimes make me kinda "ummm???" like most of the fans just assume philippa speaks malay bc she's from m'sia, which is part true? but philippa/michelle is m'sia born chinese hence she should at least know 3 speaking languages, one is the native tongue, probably mandarin or cantonese; the second is malay cuz national language; then the third is english.
Most of the fic I see philippa is portrayed as a malay instead of a m'sia born chinese. I mean yeah both races are m'sian but our culture is really different from each (that wayang kulit I mean sure it's m'sian culture but I think seldom m'sia chinese will have that)
anyway it's just my tiny opinion, since im a m'sia born chinese myself :D

Hi I hope you are doing well ! I wanted to ask how are you learning languages? I've always wanted to pick up a second language (especially creole or French to speak to my grandparents). Also I think its amazing that you're learning so many at once good, especially mandarin! I hear once you master that, learning languages comes easier :)
hey!! and thanks :) .....IMO, I learn best (and I think most people) through imitation and immersion. so imo the essentials forwhat works for me:
Find an app/website/YouTuber to stick with to learn the basics with (so Duolingo, Memrise, Drops, etc.). I think you should try a few and find out which you like best! They’re not good to become fluent or even intermediate but they’ll get you familiar w/the language and it’s grammar I think.
whatever your interests are, you can find them in that language! So I think you should find french youtubers (w/english subtitles at first ofc, a lot of them have that). Listen to a lot of music in your target language (any genre that you like) and shit + get into the culture and shit bc I think its fun
watching a lot of films and stuff is good, but I think TV Shows / Talk Shows are best because that’s how actual native speakers will speak & will watch. Though it’s like that in films, it’s always gonna be way more dramatised and......a pretty way of talking? 🤔 It depends. but I stand by what I said !!
hinative ! I personally, don’t think you should use google translate until you’re intermediate because google translate and any translate app is Shit. it’s only useful if you know exactly what you’re looking for,,if that makes sense. hinative is great for asking questions and how to say things—most of the time, someone else has asked the question before you so you can just search for it!!
something else: when you get comfortable enough, I think reading comics/webtoons in that language is a good idea. Webtoon has really good comics that you can read in french! if you’re into anime/manga, there are always subs in french / translations for french people
So through doing that shit, you’ll get naturally...curious about the language. Through watching youtubers, you might copy phrases they say or get curious as to what a joke means + naturally learn about the culture and the way people speak, etc!
some other things
join a groupchat or discord or find a language partner....best through, Discord, HelloTalk, Tandem or Reddit!
put your phone/computer in french and struggle....cuz I think the stress of having to know what something is or you’ll make a mistake is good
talking to urself....in that language..is also good. I personally, talk 2 myself in my target languages all the time and make up scenarios and just randomly be doing them in the shower cuz I’ll get curious on like.....what I would say in that scenario...and yes 🤔🤔🤔
anki!! anki’s a good ass app.
I also think a journal in ur target language is really good. Because with a journal you learn how to express yourself! Here’s a good video about it! Though it’s about learning Korean but he speaks broadly about it so you can apply it to anything.
ok thas like...what i know. Sorry there’s nothing specifically about Creole—but from what I’ve heard, learning the basics in french or just simply learning french will help you learn Creole quicker. I think most french speakers, esp black ppl ofc, understand most Creole to a certain degree ! So yeah,,,,i hope this helped u out a bit.

Uhm??????? Unacceptable?? Please tell me more about your OCs in that last art? I demand it? I want a full report on my desk before morning? Cite your sources please?
Oh no,, you’re asking,,, about my own faves,,, sorry to everyone, but I guess im never going to shut up ever now. (i already don’t shut up ever, what have u done, im now going to speak so much that society will collapse AT LEAST)
But for real. I enjoy pretending I don’t have faves, I love all my kids the same, buT WE ALL KNO THAT’S A LIE, those two my fave bitches (they snatched that title from the last two faves, rip to them, and they also snatched, n I must really make that clear, the title of “the bitches with the most AUs from the previous previous faves. Their power.)
SO. Get ready for a ride, table of content: them, their respective character, their story, and the pLETHORA OF ALTERNATE STORIES I GAVE THEM because i must yell about all the versions of my kids i have (non-exhaustive cause its that serious bro, but ill take extra time for the universe depicted in that art just for u bby). (tbh if clamp is allowed to sprinkle their fave gays in all their universes so am i, except they aint secondary characters there, every story is just theirs. love that concept.)(itll be so long you’re getting a whole novel even if i have to post it in two posts)
So~ Em twos. Dari n Wei-wei as I call em, or Dumbass n Egg if you wanna get friendly.
They’re my proudest instance of “oops i made a squad of characters, and two of them just accidentally were so perfectly compatible and complementary oh no I guess they’re in love now.” And then they became my favourite. Cause I guess their potential was too much (jk its bc they hot)
Tumblr media
cuties.
I spent ten minutes wondering which to introduce first cause dang son, I want to talk bout them both so much shefjgfdg
First, as I technically designed him first (like ten minutes before the other), my man weiwei. if u ever saw my art its impossible that you havent seen him at least once. cause i’m legit always drawing him. cause im in love bro.
Tumblr media
Demonstration : here are my computer scribbled weiweis of 2020 so far (with a few daris there n there they’re a package deal), that i could find, and they do not include all the paper sketches that i’m too lazy to take pics of. (i just been drawing him with so much hair these days that’s illegal, his brand is baldness)
But anyway, he’s CHEN Chia-Wei, he’s 21, he’s Taiwanese n I love him. Two very important facets of his character when you meet him: he doesn’t talk, and is absolutely, in every single dimension, built to make you fall head over heels for him.
He’s (in the “canon” storyline if i may call it that since it’s def not my most developed one but oh well) an art student, mostly paints but is also great at photography and videography (his vibe is busy hectic pieces with strong bold colours, lots of harsh edges, and very people focused).
Aside from that, he’s also super into fashion, and because he’s part of the rich boy squad (the “im broke so im giving half my characters wealth in compensation) he Can and Does exhibit some quite funky fits when he feels like it. (maybe a reason I draw him a lot, since my fave thing is pretty boys in weird ass clothes)(and then i also draw him in just casual shit cuz tittiful men in plain white tees you know. there’s just something about it.)
Tumblr media
Small compilation of outfits. ft me and my band handwriting roasting outfits that id also kill to own but ok u know.
He digs music. (i make playlists for my OCs and i gotta say, his is the best one, i spent so many hours researching it, “arranging” it etc n its still a work in progress but dude. she got many moods my fave part is when it suddenly turns into so many cheesy ballads also she’s enormous cause im as wordy in playlists as I am in writing.) listens to a lot, n also he can play piano n guitar. cause you know. heartthrobs got to win your heart with a song (and if he’s alone he can even mumble some songs, who knows maybe even sing em softly, definitly a sight to stumble on accidentally). Big main artists that have his vibes are Hello Nico, No Party for Cao Dong, n Circa Waves’s “what’s it like over there” album.
He does a lot of sports. He ain’t fit through magic, rip to him. He’s got a serious routine, and it’s a time he likes to use alone, cause nothing like running at the break of dawn, alone with your thoughts, which you can just easily forget through the exhaustion of a workout session afterwards.
he also eats. A lot. Food is just good, bro. (the canon story is def happening some place europe aka his biggest struggle is how expensive food is here. outrageous.)
He secretly loves super cheesy movies. the dramatic romcoms??? the cute shows that are just so cute and worriless?? anything involving soulmates??? yeh dude. he watches it, he reads it, he listens to it, and he may cry about it, but no one will know. That’s the one true guilty pleasure. (and he definitly has a collection of romance dvds, books n manhuas in his old room back at the family home. where no one can see it. perks of studying abroad. no one can see ur hoarding of material that clashes your image. “yes i watch edgy experimental things haha yes i love those smart people movies of course wow the philosophy…” and then immediatly goes to watch the trashiest predictable but oh so sweet dramas all night)
While he doesn’t speak (as in with the mouth) he can communicate in a bunch of language, due to having moved around quite a bit. On top of his native mandarin and hokkien, he’s fluent in English, so he can use those to write, and is also fluent in TSL, and pretty good in HKSL (and from that, other close-in-syntax sign languages). So he doesn’t have trouble getting around, but then he is also overall quiet in public (with close friends and over text though, that’s another story, that’s where he gets chattier, and also where you may get more of his true personality). Also, he can speak with his sister. That’s pretty cool bro.
Tumblr media
I was going to say he’s a very “hides his true colours under a shell” type of character but you know, for an egg character, that’s pretty ironic. We love poetic cinema.
He presents himself as a very laid back, chill detached dude, going with the flow and all that great stuff, and masterfully mixes just the right doses of mysterious, flirty and calm to just go around vibing. But ain’t that jUST THE MILLENIAL’S ILLNESS, those dANG KIDS, going around, gettin relationships but never intimacy 👏😢 (there’s more to it dont leave)
First of all, before you see the Drama, the Turmoil, the first thing you notice when you really do befriend him is that he’s c h i l d i s h, he gets sulky when things dont go following the plan, he gets whiny n jealous for not getting attention , he gets competitive over stupid challenges, and way too playful if you start teasing, and when he gets flustered too…you think you get cool stoic dude but actually you get a dude who’s reacting to things with way too much intensity, and boi i thought u were gon be mature what’s that why have you been pouting for three days over losing a bet come on- That’s mostly coming up when he interacts with his sister, but the closest you are to him to more of it you get to see.
He’s also an affectionate dude actually. Like physically. As in you’ll get spontaneous hugs. He’s come nap on your shoulder. That’s a perk of befriending him if you ask me.
Also he tries to look so cool, so tough haha. He’s actually a lil sensitiv boi. he gets fluffy, he gets flustered, he heart eyes. you turn around and he’s gazing at ya as if you were the whole universe. he gets a mini crisis for holding hands with his crush. ya know. he’s secretly a softie.
Tumblr media
nerd.
Then in the “what he doesn’t show” (my fave part), where you stock all the anxieties, all the trauma… Obviously there’s a lot of anxiety here (selective muteness being a symptom of it, he hides the other ones very well) mostly fear of inadequacy, of abandonement and of loneliness. mmmmmmmaybe that’s why he was v reticent to continue pursuing that one guy he was into when he realised he was just a tad too into him oh no is that some,, like?? some lovey-love?? cant have that im afraid of gettin heartbroken bro. Aint that sad for a someone who’s one true goal is just findin someone to love and to be with forever, the struggles of yearnin for a soulmate when there’s nothing you fear more than getting attached to a person and letting them see you and your flaws.., delicious.
Now tho (because its so alone speaking about a character on their own and i just wanna get to the part where i can speak bout em together and how they bring out bits of each others ya kno, the good kush….), Dari…
He’s pretty, i must say, and got the funniest hair to draw, and comes from the most opposite background to weiwei’s.
Darian Andriev PARVANOV, also 21, comes from the remote Bulgarian countryside, but i still love him (this makes it sound as if i wouldnt normally love someone from the bulgarian countryside. its not what i meant. by default ud remind me of my son so you’d start being liked if u came from the bulgarian countryside) Now for the first instance of “wow, the complementarity”. The first thing i thought making Dari was that he looked too cool, and that he obviously was a dumbass, and mostly that he was physically unable to shut up. (o fuck he’s me)
Tumblr media
best picture i could find of him. He’s got the dilemma of “wow he looked so pretty n cool until he opened his mouth”
He’s ALSO an art student (cause they were initially created for the purpose of filling the gap of “i have ocs in every field except the one i sorta know that’s so stupid”), painting major (def vibes differently than weiwei though, he’s doing those soft pretty landscapes n flowers, everything real pretty and peaceful, we got some impressionism nerd in here folks).
He was/is a real country boy, farm family, he helped tend the fields, he worked in plantations for pocket money, he knows how to take care of cattle and chicken and goats and all the cool babies you can take care of, he can tell whether the soil is good or not, he can drive a tractor, and doesnt fear dirt.
but then also he’s kind of a neat freak, he hates getting paint on himself, so the duality of man, dirt ok but paint? disgostin. his spaces are real neat and spotless, he likes cleaning (its relaxing) and does it nearly too often.
his dumbassery comes from lack of common sense and impulsiveness, aside from that he’s actually what you’d call “mad smart”, dude had em good grades, he can memorise pages upon pages of the most trivial information, he has an accumulation of knowledge beyond limits, and is good at problem solving. so he can recite all the words of the F letter of the dictionnary, but would also put a curling iron in his mouth to see if it would curl his tongue. (side note, he does have a problem with heat n fire, most his “oopsie how i wound up hurting myself on acccident” story involve burning -that stove was just too tempting…)
Tumblr media
while he doesnt feel very attached to his home country, he does feel strongly for his family. he’d do anything for his mum (and actually does everything to make her proud already, that’s his one main goal), and he’s ready to sacrifice a lot for her (as in, spend years working non-stop a really uncomfortable job so his mother wouldnt have to pay a cent of his expenses even though she said she could by doing some sacrifices herself, and then being ready to come back as soon as needed if anything happened, and potentially drop his career and dream n go back to the farm life to provide for mama)(also he still does hold onto some parts of his home country’s traditions, and does sometimes feel homesick but more in a ‘i left the most beautiful landscapes n the city feels cramped and claustrophobic and i dont know people and i dont feel in the right place cuz im a forreigner with a thicc accent who doesnt master the language of this place and straight up have different body language communicators due to cultural difference oh lord i wanna be home where a nod means no and a head shake is yes i keep misunderstanding everything”)
if you want background noise he’s the perfect pal to call over, he’s just so chatty, he got hours and hours of non stop speech ready for you. you can shut him up once you’re done listening with the offering of food. works everytime.
he’s definitly not shy. neither in terms of talking to people, nor when it comes to making decisions. he’s quite bold, and rarely hesitates to go towards something he wants. he’s direct in his approach to most everything.
he likes partying. mostly the socialising part, talkin to people is just fun ya feel. and being in the crowd, doing whatever, pressure free? ya can dance n enjoy yourself, and people wont notice? yeah that’s nice. but doesnt do it super often cause broke bitches aint got the party time n budget.
he likes arm. (just an excuse for me to drop this thing here cuz i like it)
Tumblr media
While he’s an overall bubbly looking character, with a cheery loud personnality, he does carry some youth trauma that has him more reticent to engage in happiness, he comes from what you could call “not the wokest background” and he may have fallen victim of it : he’s kind of a flashy noticeable character, both physically and in his personnality, and doesnt exactly matches the expectations of dudes in the area he comes from (delicate, emotional and sweet guy? that doesnt exist bro). He went through it, and it has definitly had some impact on his confidence in many aspects. But he’s 100% the type of guy to put on the fake happy front because if feeling bad is sad, making the people you care about sad for you too is Unacceptable Right??? relying on friends?? what???
But then what are we supposed to be doing with such charming characters huh,,,
Make them fall in love obviously.
Their story obviously has to do with falling in love and workin a relationship cause if I dont write romance i literally die, but I make the center pivot of all of it communication, and barriers in communications. Most obvious being them coming from wildly different cultures, having different native languages, and also the ways you adapt to muteness (what i love most bout that part is even then they fucked up given the easiest quickest small body language things to communicate are head nods n then i managed to make one come from the one country that reverses those like iconic how do they even understand each other -through a lot of work and love bro) but also on more “introspective” points, how to say things that you are even afraid to think about, how to open up and share your burdens and trauma with someone, how to say words you’ve been convinced you weren’t allowed to, the inner turmoil of communication in short. And then also communication through art, and through alternative unusual ways. If i were snobbish i could call it something like “a thinkpieces on how humans overcome obstacles in communication, and adapt, all for the sake of pursuing love” but fact is its mostly boys being in love n learning how to speak, figuratively and also quite literally. And also its me having fun with making characters evolve from each other, be able to influence each other for the better, helping each other be more comfortable with themselves and express the true things of their personnality, and discover new aspects. I just wanna write intense and soulful love bro.
So in less concept and more facts, weiwei meets dari, dari being his puppy self just immediatly strikes a conversation and weiwei gets interested cause “oho nice pretty boy? very good. i want some of that”. they get closer because you cant fight off the Power of friendship (and also the power of “what your friend is bestie with my friend?? guess we hanging out”) and then friendship and interest turns into pining, held back by respective dread of what romance with the other would mean (as in “romance?? cant have that we cant feel” and “with him?? cant do that, convince yourself he’s just a friend immediatly what would the family think”) but eventually they do have to just crash into one another cause that’s just the gravitational pull bro, its physics bro. and from then on its all unlearning destructive behaviours, bettering oneself with the help of the other, and getting over trauma to finally live ur best life. and gettin fckin married bro they’re both cheeseballs theyll wanna wed
BUT MAKING EM FALL IN LOVE ONCE ISNT ENOUGH time to make 3894853 alternate universes about em.
Lets speak bout my fave of those for a hot second.
First of all, the one of the art that brought this ask, guess i could call it “Pretty Tribes” AU, bunch of tribes live and do their things, having nature and energy powers. Dari n Weiwei’s tribes are bros, the latter’s powers needing them to move around to get energy from different places, enabling them different abilities. So basically they get to hang at the other’s place while the regenerate energy from there, and in exchange they help them out with various tasks (dari’s tribe is a rly farmer oriented one, with plant magic, while weiwei’s got more poyvalent powers, and have very good healers notably, so it comes in handy). The two boys were born a few months apart in their respective tribes, so naturally, anything the two clans meet, they’re put together to play and all, and from that they became besties, and each time they meet, after the gaps of time separating the two groups, they feel more and more of a little something else~ story is themed round growing up, friendship between clans, their traditions and cultures, and pretty boys in pretty clothes in pretty landscapes interacting with nature.
Tumblr media
The superpower AU, i fuckin love it bro. Its an old one, made for other characters, but i just love it so much that i had to inject my faves in it. Its got a grimy ugly setting, bad government, propaganda, and fights between super-people (heavily mediatised for entertainment and reinforcing the idea that “look at these evil villains thank god us the good government protects you from them”), with a side of bad ethics in science. In all that, those two have the role of “those two young enemy warrior and villain, they were so powerful and fought so hard”, public figures, legendary and admired by both sides, everyone followed their fights, til one day they presumably died in one of their showdowns. (haha sike they actually found themselves talking for 5 seconds and realised they lived in a society, n built a plan to run away). The main characters get to find they’re alive because one of em had history with super-warrior-golden-boy and go to seek their help to overthrow the Big Bads. (stealing them from their nice gay cottage hermit life smh so rude)
Tumblr media
Mermaids. I like those. Sailor weiwei sees merman dari, they both save each other in different occasions, they grow fascinated with each other, they’re at sea, water romance. Amazing. AU made half cuz i just like water n fish. and shirtless sailors.
(i couldnt find art of it in five minutes so have a link to that lil animatic piece i made of it once)
Indie band AU, where i was listening to songs that vibe so well with those two in general n then my brain was like “what if they’re the ones playing”. They’re (along with the rest of the art squad) a nice little alternative rock band, doing their thing, then one of their songs blows up, and they get quite the attention, to the dismay of dari who wrote that song in a moment of “oh no im so in love with my bandmate but i cant tell him what if i ruin everything we have going on ill just have to love from afar and deal with that” and now has way too many people interested in who he wrote it about and theorising from his every move when performing it (a mix of music, secret crushes and social media) (ft a picture of neither of them but its the least ugly art i found of this AU cuz its old and instruments are the bane of my existence)(also kelana is so pretty i gotta flaunt her around)
Tumblr media
in kind of the same vibe, as in we’re in a music world overexposed to social media, i also integrated em to an AU i did for fun, “boyband AU” as its called aka idol based band system cuz you kno, i got a hobby, lets apply it. Band boy Dari and bodyguard Weiwei got a thing going on, but can’t really act on it in any way, because they’d just destroy the whole band if it ever came public. Featuring annoying bandmates, catchy pop songs and people making fanaccounts of that one hot Mr.Bodyguard cause dang he hot.
(all the art of this one so ugly im sorry)
SPY AU, one of my fave brand. They spies, they get assigned on the same mission, they work real nice with each other. spies hot. fights. strategy. i just like the concept. Gays taking down the worst traffics imaginable??? I love that song.(i actually have so much on this cause s p i e s are fuckin great)
Tumblr media
Fashion. U kNOW i have an AU for fashion. Supermodel and his private stylist, trying to maintain the line of professionalism. And failing to do so. Lets make out in unpractical designer clothes.
Have an highschool AU for a bunch of characters, injected them as “spinoff”, start chatting online being art buddies, fall in love without meeting (ft. all the iconics of internet friendship like knowing tiny details of their personnalities but not the fact that they have a sister or “waIT ur a GUY i thought u were a girl wow wild good news for my gay ass”)
n those are my faves as far as i remember, i got a fuckton of small other ones that arent fleshed out enough, or some that are more of a guilty pleasure universe, and some that are more like “projects that i can expend on as soon as i run out of daydream material” (like u kno those hospital drama shows with super innacurate medicine n shit like idk scrubs or whatever, yeh i want some of that but im keeping it for later)

Language Tag
I got tagged by @takethat005 aaaaages ago, thank youuu and I’m so sorry for being late with this ♥️ I don’t think anyone cares about this lmao but I’m doing it anyway cuz I think it’s fun :D
What do you consider to be your native language?
German
What was your first language learning experience?
I started learning English when I was like 5-ish (?)
what languages have you studied and why did you start them?
- English because of school though I started learning it beforehand
- French because I’ve always liked it a lot and also I didn’t like the other electives in middle school lol
- I randomly learned Finnish for a while when i was like 14 lmao i don’t even remember why??? I just liked it idk haha.
- Mandarin because I like it, plus now I can cry over History in multiple languages
- Thai because I wanted to watch my shows without subs lol and also it’s fun to learn!
how does your personality affect how you learn languages?
I’m generally more of a quiet learner so I study the most effectively when I’m by myself, which comes in handy for learning vocabulary and such. When it comes to speaking I get insecure sometimes but it quickly gets better once I start talking lol.
do you prefer learning languages in a class or individually?
In my experience, both have their advantages for sure. Learning in class is important for speaking and interaction but in order to develop your own understanding and intensify certain things it’s better to learn individually. But if I had to choose, I would pick in class simply bc you have more interaction.
what are your favorite language learning materials?
My favorite way to learn a language is to surround myself with it in any audiovisual form and integrate it into my daily life. Watching a movie, series, listening to music, etc. is how I learn the most effectively. Of course books are necessary as well but I personally learn faster through listening and watching. Also talking to native speakers has been very helpful for me since the direct interaction is a good addition to the classes. Some apps can be helpful too, though most of them are crap imo haha.
how much time do you spend actively learning per day/week?
well I’m constantly surrounded by English and Thai in my daily life lol so I kind of learn those 2 languages passively every day. I additionally spend around 2-3 hours a week learning Mandarin and Thai actively though since it will get lost otherwise.
what are your short term and long term language learning goals?
since I’m generally passionate about learning languages, my long term goal is to just learn as many as possible and hopefully surround myself with new people and get to know new cultures. My short term goal is to not forget something that I learned 24 hours ago lmao.
what is your favorite language?
Very difficult lol. Obviously German and English come natural to me and I still love French very much, though I’m currently making the most progress in Mandarin and Thai so I would probably pick those 2 as my current favorites.
what is the next language you want to learn?
I’m interested in Korean and also I wanna improve my French since it got very rusty over the years lol 🙈 Also Italian would be nice! so if anyone wants to teach me hmu haha
what advice can you give to new language learners?
In my experience, the most important premise is to have something that you’re passionate about and that motivates you. The more motivation you have, the easier and faster you learn. Whether it’s music, a movie, a tv show or a friendship, relationship, etc.... If you have something that fuels your will to learn, the rest will come easily.
also as I mentioned above, my personal advice is to surround yourself with the language as much as possible. listen to music, read a book or something else. Also talking to native speakers is very helpful. generally ime it’s more effective to take small steps, rather than big ones. Setting small goals throughout a short period of time helps you stay motivated; f.ex. learning something new every day makes it easy to keep going. Even if it’s just a new word or phrase; even small achievements can motivate you. 👍🏻 (look at me turning into a motivational speaker lmao)
sorry to everyone who doesn’t care about this lmao; this got quite long haha. but it was fun, thanks again for tagging me! 💜I hereby tag everyone who wants to do it!! also feel free to drop some comments on what languages you learn & what advice you have! 😊

Hi! Can I ask you numbers 7, 15, 16 and 29 from “hi, I’m not from the US” ask set? Also, you tagged the post with wanting to answer number 26, so if nobody asked you yet, I'd love to hear your answer to that one too :) Have a lovely day!
Hi thanks for the asks (especially 26 LMAO I wasn’t entirely seriously with it omg)! Have a great day too and I hope you enjoy the answers lol.
EDIT: Put them under a Keep Reading because this got way longer than it should’ve been.
7. three words from your native language that you like the most?
-Hmm, actually English is my native language, as it’s the first language of Singapore (second languages vary but since our majority is Chinese most speak Chinese as their second). I guess I’ll use Mandarin then.
晨曦 (chén xī) - “Dawn” (I personally like this, as the second character is my Chinese name, and it sounds pretty. Also I am eternally amused that most people can’t write it, even those with plenty of Chinese writing experience.)
拜托 (bài tuō) - Basically “please”, but I like this cuz it’s hilarious to use it sarcastically. No joke.
混蛋 (hún dàn) - Basically “Bitch” and “Get lost” in one phrase. Technically a noun. Mostly considered a profanity but not exactly (kinda like “hell” as a curse word in English).
15. a saying, joke, or hermetic meme that only people from your country will get?
-The biggest collective joke is probably our exaggerated use of Singlish, AKA “Singaporean English”, which is kinda like our own personal English dialect. It’s considered a joke because professionally we use “proper” British English (just without the accent lol), reserving Singlish for casual, but we literally over-exaggerate how we talk as a joke. Remember the old “Y U liek dis” meme? Yeah Singaporeans literally talk like that except we take that to the next level and add words of 2 more languages and 6 different dialects in one sentence.
16. which stereotype about your country you hate the most and which one you somewhat agree with?
-It’s not really a stereotype, since no one knows we exist much anyways, but I strongly hate the assumptions that we’re in China just because our population majority is Chinese. Malaysia I can forgive, since we were a part of Malaysia literally only about 50 years ago, but WE ARE NOWHERE NEAR CHINA PLEASE.
-The one I somewhat agree with is…that Singaporeans complain a lot. Admittedly, it’s pretty true, but most of the time it’s really just done to de-stress…unless you’re over the age of 45. I work in a restaurant and gods it’s impossible to go a single day without a handful of stupid complaints, mostly from the older folk.
26. does your nationality get portrayed in Hollywood/American media? what do you think about the portrayal?
-*DRAMATIC GASP* Portrayal of Singapore in Hollywood? In this universe?
-Listen I have literally only seen ONE instance of this (The Hitman 47 movie I think) and it only showed a few shots of the most famous Botanic Gardens we have here and that’s it. Give me more Singapore in Hollywood (but they don’t like Asians much it seems sooo…….)
29. does your region/city have a beef with another place in your country?
-Singapore is really small so a single region is literally the whole country, and we kinda rely on making good relations with other countries, so essentially we don’t have any actual enemies. That being said, things are tense with China because of our relations to the US (though with current affairs, I can see why), and our relationship with Malaysia, our neighbour country, is also a little awkward, but only due to a lot of conflicting ideologies and nothing really aggressive.

Do you have any tips for studying a large amount in a short period of time? Because I have been learning chinese for 2 1/2 years, but i really haven't gotten far and this August 29 (50 days!!) I'm leaving for a 10 month exchange to ZhengZhou!
i’m gonna start out by saying there’s really no fun way to cram a bunch of knowledge into your brain in a short amount of time (i know this really well bc i was a shit student in high school and i still a shit student now, even though i have improved slightly)
but here are my suggestions:
make some kind of schedule. if you do this you don’t need to have a super regimented study plan but just have an idea of what you need to study and make a basic timeline. you leave in 50 days, so that’s about 7 weeks. while you don’t necessarily need to know what you’re going to study every single day, maybe have a general idea about what you want to cover each week so that you can have a general idea of what your goal is
if scheduling isn’t your thing (cuz it sure as hell isn’t mine), form a list of what you want to accomplish in these 50 days. gather up the resources you’re gonna use (i’ll put some suggestions for that below) and figure out what you want to accomplish with them. this list can be as general or specific as you think it needs to be.
whether you make a schedule or a list is really up to you and how you prefer to study and stay motivated, but it’s important to remember to take a few days off (at least once a week). 50 days of straight studying is not an easy thing and if you don’t rest in between you’ll eventually burn out. so yeah, take some days off. but if you still want to get some mandarin practice in, listen to music in the background. here’s some links to music master posts, as well as my mandarin music tag (my personal suggestions for music are, naturally, 苏运莹, 张震岳 (AKA A-Yue,Waa Wei, Hello Nico, Haya 乐团, Frandé/法蘭黛, and 宇宙人). also take a look at the blogs @chinese-lyrics and @fyeahcindie. they have a bunch of great music that you can look through
so now that you know what you’re gonna be doing, here are some suggestions for how to drill vocab and grammar:
the first is memrise. there are a bunch of memrise courses for mandarin that cover useful vocab from every level of the HSK among other things. since it uses spaced repetition it’s a great resource to help beat vocab into your brain. it is, however, not the best for grammar (imo)
if you need to, take sticky notes and label everything in your house. and make it really visible. when i did this, i didn’t write the pinyin on the sticky notes, just the tone marks but if you feel that you need to write the pinyin, then go ahead and do it. when you do this, you are forced to see the vocab every day and will learn it after having seen it so many times
it is my opinion that the best way to learn vocab (and their corresponding characters) is to write. when i study mandarin i always try to write out my vocab lists and then use this method to practice the characters. depending on how long your vocab list is, this can be an incredibly time consuming method (i’ve had lists that have taken me an hour and a half to finish drilling using this method) but it really pays off
for grammar i’d use websites like this one or this one bc they give examples of the grammar in use. also, the first one (allset learning) has their grammar organized up to B2 (HSK 4) so it’s easy to find grammar by HSK levels. the second one is also organized by level, but they don’t have as many articles yet. if you want to practice by making your own sentences but are afraid of messing up, just hop on over to HiNative. you can ask native speakers of mandarin if something you wrote in mandarin sounds natural or correct, as well as ask for help with translating difficult words or sentences and more.
more than anything, i recommend you find some resources created by native speakers to help you learn
slow chinese 慢速中文 is a podcast series written by native speakers for people learning mandarin. they are a few minutes long each and are spoken at a slightly slower speed than normal, and they cover a variety of topics including chinese culture and food. you can download the podcasts on iTunes, but you can also find them online along with the transcripts. it’s an amazing resource
快乐汉语 (this playlist only goes to episode 75): this is a video series created by CCTV for mandarin learners. it’s basically about an american girl who runs away from home to stay with her family friends in beijing. the acting is super cheesy and the plots are downright weird at times, but it’s an excellent resource because the videos are subbed in both mandarin and english. since susan (the main character) is american, there are a bunch of episodes where the family explains chinese culture to her so it’s pretty cool. warning: a lot of the characters have thick beijing accents, so just watch out for that. they also have a couple of short breaks in each episode to explain certain grammar or vocab that was used in the episode
what i’d do with these and any other native resources you find (song lyrics, blog posts, books, etc.) is break them down sentence by sentence and study the vocab and grammar. once you get that vocab, drill it like you do with all of the other vocab. what my teacher would have us do with 快乐汉语 was listen once nonstop, then go scene by scene and write down what the characters were saying using what we could hear and the chinese subtitles. we’d then go over the scene and find any vocab and grammar patterns that were new to us and make notes on them. once we’d finish with that, we’d listen to the scene once more.
after we’d done that for every scene, we’d watch the whole video again and again to get the hang not only of the new vocab but also of the way the characters said each sentence. when learning a new language, a lot of what makes someone sound unnatural is not only accent, but also rhythm. so my teacher would have us listen to the video over and over and then make us perform certain scenes. she did this so we could practice listening not only for pronunciation but also for the rhythm of each sentence. so i highly recommend you try this (sans the performing). you can just pick a scene or two and listen a bunch and eventually try to repeat after each character until you feel you’ve got the rhythm down.
so that’s really all i can say for now. cramming requires a lot of work so what you’ve got to do is find a way to apply the methods that work best for you and keep plugging away at them until the very end. i hope this helps you in some way, and i hope you enjoy your time in china! 加油!!!

When learning Chinese, what is one important tip you would give to a newbie, also I ❤️ ur blog and ur always so sweet when u reply, ur dedication to languages is admirable!!
Thank you so much! ❤️
(Someone asked a similar question on ask.fm so I just copied & pasted)
If you’re learning by yourself (without receiving any lessons) you need to learn pinyin first. It’s useful when you need to look up words in the dictionary, you need it when you type out Chinese characters, it also improves your listening and pronunciation.
Pinyin (with audio): https://chinese.yabla.com/chinese-pinyin-chart.php
I’m currently studying a course called teaching Chinese as a foreign language and teachers suggested ‘Discover China Student Book’, they say it’s quite useful for foreign learners, I haven’t bought the book so I don’t know what the book is like. They also suggested ‘Step by Step’. Those two books are used in the Unis they teach in.
Materials, apps:http://www.mandarinhouse.com/daily-mandarin-apphttp://www.daydayupchinese.com/index.htmhttps://apps.ankiweb.net (for flashcards)http://tatoeba.org/eng (a collection of sentences and translations)http://www.fluentu.com (this one is quite popular but it’s not free)I’ve mentioned some websites in this post:http://kimmy-trans.tumblr.com/post/159150480131/kimmys-chinese-notes
You need to put in the time to learn Mandarin, if you don’t have a textbook to study with. I’d suggest: 1. Learn Pinyin, listen to a lot of audio files whether it’s podcast, music, drama, listen to anything you can find. 2. Learn all the types of strokes and practice the stroke order. http://www.clearchinese.com/chinese-writing/strokes.htmhttp://www.archchinese.com; http://www.archchinese.com/chinese_character_strokes.html3. Learn vocabulary by categories e.g: learn words related to 'weather’ for one week and then learn 'clothes’ for another week. 4. Learn radicals by writing it out. And list out characters in a table that has a specific radical and you add the new characters in the table as you progress, e.g: radical亻- 优, 亿, 体 etc. You could do this in Excel if you want. 5. Learn grammar: https://resources.allsetlearning.com/chinese/grammar/https://www.chineseboost.com/grammar/6. Find a language exchange partner or someone who is willing to practice with you. If you can’t find anyone, you can try to talk to yourself (I do this all the time cuz I have no friends lmao) for example when you’re thirsty and you want to drink water: 我口渴了, 我想喝水. 7. Once you’ve learnt some characters, vocabularies, you can start reading stories, manhua, articles etc in Chinese. You need to read as much you can. http://chinesereadingpractice.com/category/beginner/8. Try to write as much as you can in Chinese, write diaries in Chinese or tweet in Chinese, write whatever you want whether it’s just a short sentence or a paragraph. You need to practice a lot and get someone to check your writing.
This is just a suggestion, obviously you don’t have to follow these steps because I didn’t learn Chinese, this is just an idea coming from a native speaker lol I think it’s easy this way if you’re learning without a textbook. But I would never learn a language WITHOUT a textbook :)
*I forgot to mention that you need to constantly review the things you’ve already learnt, otherwise you will forget it after a while.

Speak English Fluently – How To Answer The Phone
