Sadako at the End of the World by Koma Natsumi

I read Sadako at the End of the World by Koma Natsumi. It is, I'm pretty sure, an official part of The Ring universe, which I find immensely entertaining.

It's the days after the apocalypse, and only a few survivors of humanity still exist in the world. Two young girls, the only surviving members of their family, put a strange video cassette into a VCR, and somehow it starts playing even though there's no power connected. And, a girl crawls out of the TV! And, the girls are delighted! It's been such a long time since they've seen anyone else, and they understand so little about how videotapes work, that they don't feel a bit of fear at meeting Sadako. As for Sadako herself, she seems a little stymied by how unfazed the girls are to meet her and more than a little befuddled that the world ended at some point while she was trapped in her tape.

She informs the girls through a handy whiteboard that she can only stay with them seven days, but the girls are happy to have her for as long as she'll stay. They bring her along on their journey as they travel the world looking for other survivors. Together they meet other people and hear their stories.

This isn't a series, it's just one book. It manages to be both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. It somehow combines slice of life and horror in a really satisfying way? But, please be aware that it doesn't have a happy ending, if that's something that bothers you. But, otherwise, I highly recommend this book!
