Basketball beginner guide for Australians.
https://coach.basketball.net.au/glossary/

Basketball is a sport played both indoors and outdoors in Australia. Basketball is the number two sport globally with over 200 countries participating and over 450 million players.
Basketball is played by approximately one million men, women, boys, and girls throughout Australia. According to Basketball Australia, as of March 2014, basketball is the second highest team participation sport in Australia.
Here are some of the basics that a basketball player should know.
Backboard – The rectangular board from which the basketball ring is suspended and where players shoot their goals.
Baseline – The out of bounds line behind the backboard at each end of the court.
Baseball Pass – A long one handed pass thrown with the same method used to throw a baseball.
Basket – The goal. The basket has a hoop (metal ring) with a net hanging from it. The hoop is attached to a backboard 3.05m above the court surface.
Bounce Pass – A pass in which the ball is bounced once between the passer and the receiver.
Box Out – When a player turns or pivots into the path of another player who is attempting to rebound the ball.
Centre Circle – The circle in the middle of the basketball court.
Chest Pass – A two handed pass that is thrown from the chest.
Coach – The team’s leader. The coach educates and develops players, determines player positions and applies strategy and plans for games.
Court – The playing area for basketball. The court is 28 metres long and 15 metres wide.
Defence – The act of retrieving the ball from the opposition or making it harder for the opposition to score.
Dribbling – Bouncing the ball with one hand. Either hand can be used but not both at the same time.
Fake – A misdirection ploy using body language and the ball to fool the opponent.
Field Goal – A shot that goes into the basket is a field goal except for free throws.
Forward – A playing position. There are two forwards on a team. Power Forward and Small Forward. These players are typically tall and powerful.
Foul – The act of illegally interfering with an opponent during play. Personal fouls and team fouls exist.
Free Throw – After being fouled by an opponent, a player gets one or more free throws from the free throw line.
Free Throw Line – A line on the court 5.8 meters from the baseline by which free throws are taken from.
Guard (Position) – A playing position. There are two guards on a team. Point Guard and Shooting Guard. These players are typically smaller and faster players who handle the ball well.
Guard (Defend) – An act of defence.
High Percentage Shot – A shot with a low degree of difficulty.
Inbound Pass – A pass made from outside the court of play to recommence the game.
Jump Ball – Used to commence play at the start of the game. The basketball is tossed into the air between two players by the referee and they jump to tip the ball to a teammate for possession.
Jump Stop – When a player stops by landing with two feet hitting the floor simultaneously. The player can then choose which foot to pivot on.
Lay Up – A type of basketball shot using the backboard as an aid to place the ball in the ring. A lay-up occurs when a player is near the ring and is generally considered a high percentage shot.
Low Percentage Shot – A shot with a high degree of difficulty.
Mid Court (Halfway) Line – The line that divides the court into two halves.
Offence – When your team has the ball you are playing offence.
Officials – The referees, score table officials and statisticians.
Out of Bounds – Outside the court of play.
Overhead Pass – A pass thrown from above the head with one or two hands.
Pass – One player throwing the ball to another player.
Personal Foul – The act of illegally interfering with an opponent during play. Each player can only foul personally five times in a game before being disqualified from further involvement in that game.
Pivot – When a player turns or pivots on one foot in order to change direction. The foot that they turn on is called the pivot foot. They can pivot in a forward direction (chest leading) or a reverse direction (back leading).
‘Man on Man’ Defence – A defensive strategy in which each defender guards a certain offensive player by standing as close to them as possible.
Possession – When a player has the ball in their hands they are in possession. A team is in possession when one of its players has the ball in their hands.
Rebound – When a shot hits the hoop or backboard and misses the basket players will compete to catch it. This is a rebound. Rebounds can be offensive or defensive.
Referee – An official who makes sure that the rules of the game are followed.
Shot – A type of shot attempting to get the basketball in the ring (jump shot, three point shot, trick shot, corner shot).
Shoot – To shoot the basketball at the basket in an attempt to get it in the ring (entering from the top only).
Sideline – There are two sidelines, one on each side of the court.
Square Up – When a player turns their body toward the basket after catching the ball.
Stride Stop – When a player lands with a stride action, one foot touching the ground before the other. The first foot becomes the player’s pivot foot.
Substitution – Interchanging of players from off court (substitute) with those on court (player). This is done during breaks in play.
Team Foul – Any personal foul becomes a team foul. If your team incurs more than 4 teams fouls per quarter the opposition shoots foul shots on any further fouls in that quarter (varies by competition).
Team Manager – The person responsible for looking after the players off court requirements and game day requirements. Not related to coaching.
Travelling – A violation occurring when a player walks or runs with the ball without dribbling.
Triple Threat Position – A stance that gives the offensive player the option to shoot, pass or dribble the ball.
Turn Over – An error that gives possession to the other team.
Violation – When a rule is broken.
Teamwork is all about cooperation, where no individual is superior to another so work as a team with Colourup Uniforms.
In sports, choosing a unique team uniform design makes your team look slick polished, radiating confident energy towards opponents and to each other.

Top 10 Best NBA Basketball Jerseys of 2020
Here at ColourUp, we live and breathe basketball, be it locally or globally. Many of our designs are inspired by NBA teams, be it past or present, with such a wide range of iconic designs over the years. So, as chosen by our design team, here’s our pick for the Top 10 Basketball Jerseys of 2020.
10. Los Angeles Clippers City Jersey
After a massive offseason, acquiring the services of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, it’s all looking up for the often-overlooked Clippers. This year’s City Edition jersey takes inspiration from the West Coast rap scene with a sharp word mark and a touch of the club’s colours of red and blue. 9. Boston Celtics Icon Jersey
What’s not to love about this Celtics jersey? It’s an all-time great, a beautiful shade of green representing the Irish heritage of the city with the name proudly displayed across the chest. Sure, it hasn’t changed much in a long time, but it hasn’t needed to. 8. Golden State Warriors Statement Jersey
With a move from Oakland back to San Francisco this season, the Warriors have embraced this with a beautiful Statement Jersey with a design of the San Francisco Bay that connects the two cities. Plus, the gold and royal blue just work so well together. 7. Houston Rockets City Jersey
In the past few seasons, Houston has embraced their Chinese heritage with some classy City jerseys but this season takes it to a new level. Paying homage to Houston being the Space City, this astronaut inspired jersey features fonts and details that relate to NASA and their spacesuits.
6. Utah Jazz Classic Jersey
Tough to pick between the City and Classic jersey, but this throwback to the classic 1990’s Jazz jersey just feels right. Everything about it – the over the top graphics, the colours, and the fonts just scream the 90s, but in a good way. The glory days of basketball. 5. Chicago Bulls Icon Jersey
Couldn’t leave the most iconic basketball jersey of all time off this list, especially with the popularity of The Last Dance. It’s simple, it’s classic, it’s iconic and the red, white and black work so well together. It will always be Michael Jordan’s jersey even if he hasn’t played for decades, and it will always have a spot in any “best basketball jersey” list.
4. Toronto Raptors Classic Jersey
The reigning NBA champions had to make this list and it was a very tough decision between the Classic and City jerseys. In the end, the throwback to the original Toronto home jersey takes the cake, with the classic raptor graphic across the front and the uber 90s design, fonts, and colours making this a standout. 3. Miami Heat City Jersey
This is now the fourth in a range of Miami Heat “Vice” jerseys since the move to Nike, and it has not disappointed. The cyan and pink scream Miami, with the word mark taken from their home arena driving home the point of the City jersey.
2. Memphis Grizzlies Classic Jersey
So glad to see this back in the NBA, it’s a beautiful jersey that like the Raptors classic, screams the 90s. Worn by the Grizzlies when they were in Vancouver before the move to Memphis, this jersey features First Nations inspired designs along with the colour and cuffs, with a striking word mark across the front and a beautiful teal base. One of our favourites.
1. Los Angeles Lakers Icon Jersey
An all-time iconic jersey, worn by some of the best, including the late Kobe Bryant. This had to make it to the top of our list, even if you don’t know basketball you know the Lakers, and this jersey is classic Lakers with the return to the round neck. RIP, Kobe.
We hope you’ve enjoyed this article about our favorite 2020 basketball jerseys, and I look forward to seeing your thoughts in the comments. If your basketball team requires custom uniforms, we at ColourUp Uniforms would love to help you. Sporting apparel is our passion and we love designing bespoke, unique jersey designs. Healthy Food Diet for Junior Basketball Players

It is important for the junior Basketball player to eat well every day – not just on game days or before a tournament or carnival. The foods they eat on a day to day basis help develop the ability to store glycogen in their muscles, maximise their growth and development and prepare them for performing at their best on game day.
Active children need constant refuelling and hydrating. Their nutrition needs are particularly important as they must meet requirements for not only their physical activity, but also their growth and development as well as overall health and wellbeing.
The junior Basketball player will play better, for longer and recover quicker from training and games when they are well fuelled. A player who is not giving adequate consideration to their diet when choosing meals and snacks may become tired, irritable and lethargic, and may even struggle to maintain interest and enjoyment in sport.
Carbohydrate for Energy
Ensure children have frequent opportunities to eat foods rich in carbohydrate such as bread and other cereal products, pasta, rice, fruit, starchy vegetables and calcium rich dairy foods. Carbohydrate rich energy foods (see examples below), need to be eaten at frequent intervals each day as they provide much of the fuel needed to keep kids active and happy. Carbohydrates keep blood sugar levels consistent, helping concentration during the day and helping keep children alert at school. Because the body can only store a limited amount of carbohydrate, it is important to have nutritious, carbohydrate rich foods at each meal and snack to top up fuel supplies.
An increased intake around training times can help maximise the muscle’s uptake of this fuel, and requirements will vary as training loads change over the season. Heavier training loads should be balanced with higher carbohydrate intakes. The majority of carbohydrate should come from nutrient rich foods such as grains, wholegrain cereals and breads, legumes, fruit, vegetables and dairy products as these provide the fuel for exercise but also key nutrients for overall health.
Carbohydrate rich fuel foods
Cereals and Grains
Wholegrain breakfast cereals: rolled oats and other grains (barley, quinoa), served hot or cold Bread and bread rolls: pita, Turkish and mountain breads, wraps, tortillas, tacos, lavash, crackers and crisp breads, rice cakes, corn thins, crumpets, fruit bread Rice, pasta, noodles, couscous, quinoa.
Dairy and alternatives
Plain and flavoured milks, yoghurt; custard, milk desserts Non-dairy alternatives such as calcium fortified soy yoghurt and soy milk.
Fruit
All fresh, canned or dried fruits, fruit and grain bars, fruit straps, 100% fruit juices
Vegetables and legumes (pulses)
Potato, sweet corn, sweet potato, baked beans, lentils, chickpeas, soy beans, bean mixes
Extras - carbohydrate snacks
Low fat fruit and grain bars, fruit buns, fruit loaf, fruit scones, pikelets, pancakes, frozen yoghurt, smoothies, fruit muffins, banana/carrot cake, oat biscuits Many kids love sweet foods, however an excessive intake of high sugar foods can replace more nutritious carbohydrate foods that growing athletes need. After games and long, hard training sessions is the preferred time to offer an occasional small serve of a “sweet treat” to top up energy levels. These may include home prepared muffins and slices or an ice-cream or ice block in the warmer weather to cool and refuel.
Protein for growth and development
As well as eating and enjoying a wide variety of carbohydrate rich foods, it is important to make sure that junior Basketball players have enough protein in their diet to optimise growth and development.
There is probably no other nutrient that has captured the attention of athletes more than protein. While junior Basketball players have protein needs higher than their sedentary counterparts, most will easily meet their needs each day through their normal eating habits. Junior Basketball players should focus their attention on a wider distribution of protein over the day, instead of large serves at 1-2 meals. Including a small serve of protein rich foods for growth and repair (see examples below), and snacks and meals throughout the day will provide essential amino acids to growing muscles.
Having a small amount of protein after strenuous exercise has been shown to be beneficial in adults, for faster muscle recovery. Whilst there has been little research done in this area on active children, it makes sense to include foods rich in both protein and carbohydrate as recovery snacks after heavy training sessions.
Growth foods
Meat, seafood and eggs
Lean beef, veal, lamb, pork, turkey, chicken Fish - fresh, canned or frozen; other seafood Eggs
Dairy and alternatives
Plain and flavoured milks, yoghurt, custard, milk desserts Non-dairy alternatives such as calcium fortified soy yoghurt and soy milk
Legumes, nuts and seeds
Baked beans, meat analogues (vegetarian foods), tofu, seed beans, nuts e.g almonds, pecans, cashews, peanuts and peanut butter, seeds e.g. pumpkin, sunflower
Hydration Guidelines
Before
It is important that active children start drinking well before they get to training or their event. Preparation needs to begin in the hours prior, by sipping ‘mouthfuls often’ throughout the day at school and home.
Junior Basketball players should be encouraged to drink fluid with meals and snacks on training days and games. This takes advantage of the electrolytes in food to ensure the water is better retained by the body, promoting optimal hydration.
The volume of fluid a child needs to drink is very individual. As a rough guide the child should drink periodically until not thirsty and their urine output is regular and light straw in colour.
During
Children should always have their own water bottle handy to sip from, and drink breaks should be scheduled during training and games to allow for regular access to fluid. Most children will maintain their hydration if allowed to drink according to their thirst.
Practicing regular intake of small volumes frequently during training assists children to feel more comfortable drinking during a game.
Remind children not to wait until they are very thirsty before they start to drink. By then they may already be starting to dehydrate and be experiencing a decline in performance.
Fluids should be kept cool to encourage greater intake and can actually help the body stay cooler. In summer, aim to have drink bottles in a cooler bag, or try freezing a bottle overnight as it will thaw quickly on a hot day. It is a good idea for coaches to have a cooler bag available for the team at trainings and games - all the drink bottles are kept in one place making for easier drink breaks.
A big concern for some athletes is getting a ‘stitch’. Sports scientists are still unclear as to why this happens but it is thought that it may be due to the stomach wall becoming distended from food or fluid consumption immediately before or during exercise, and this irritating nerves and muscles in the abdominal area during exercise. Current advice is to drink small amounts frequently, in advance of game time, and avoid highly concentrated sugary or carbonated fluids pre event, to reduce distension of the stomach. Dehydration may also increase the risk of experiencing a stitch.
Remind them that professional Basketball players drink frequently during training and games to perform at their best.
After
After exercise, encourage kids to rest and have a larger drink, followed by fluid intake as desired during the hours post-exercise, along with appropriate food intake.
Suitable fluids for recovery include water, plain and flavoured milk, liquid meal supplements or soup to provide fluid with electrolytes, carbohydrate and protein.
Discourage junior athletes from having carbonated drinks (including soft drinks) before, during and immediately after exercise as they can upset the stomach and reduce their desire to drink. It is also not suitable for active children to be drinking cola, coffee, tea and “energy drinks” as these contain large amounts of caffeine.
The day before the game
The day before a big sporting event requires extra effort to ensure adequate carbohydrate is eaten and fluid intake has been sufficient to ensure a good state of hydration. The focus for meals and snacks over the day should be ‘fuel foods’ and fluids, with a reduction in filling high fat foods during this period.
The meal eaten in the evening should have a carbohydrate base such as pasta, rice, noodles or quinoa, with a small serve of a lean protein food. Often games are on a weekend, and the pregame meal is on a Friday night when busy families are tired and pushed for time.
This meal can be kept simple and may be a good time for a family favourite pasta dish, (preferably with a non creamy sauce) or a casserole with rice or a simple stir fry with noodles. Lean burgers with wholemeal buns and salad are also a quick, simple yet nutritious choice. Remember to provide plenty of water to drink at this time, and encourage the kids to find out what healthy foods their favourite sports stars eat the night before a big game.
GO! At the stadium
It is a good idea not to rely on the canteen at the grounds or nearest shops to supply foods and drinks over the day, as healthy choices are not always available. Be prepared by packing your own supplies of food and drinks in an esky or cooler bag.
Carbohydrate rich snacks will help boost energy levels and prevent hunger for junior athletes. The list of Energy Boosters below provides some suitable snack ideas for game days. It’s always good to encourage some food with fluids, if time permits, between games.
When time is short between games, nutritious drinks like fruit smoothies, liquid meal supplements and flavoured milks may be particularly valuable. As discussed under ‘staying hydrated’, in addition to having water with the pre-game meal in the lead up to the game, players should continue to sip on water according to thirst. Drinking too much fluid before a game will merely increase the potential for a stitch and making your child uncomfortable.may be beneficial, for example, when physical demands are high (i.e. moderate to high intensity continuous activity greater than 45-60mins) or in very hot and humid conditions and where access to whole food carbohydrate choices are limited. When players are involved in tournaments over a day, remember to encourage fluid intake during breaks between games.
Aim to get kids drinking at least a 100-200mls from their drink bottle after they play, prior to the next game. Some of these athletes will be working hard, not only in their games, but also from racing around and being generally excited. Encourage the team to rest in a quiet area where they can top up with food and fluids to keep performing at their best. Those who are not so actively involved will not require as much, so be aware of the potential for these children to overeat and over-drink.
During the match
The priority during games is keeping junior players well hydrated. Cool fluids need to be made available to all players at frequent intervals during each game, particularly during breaks, and when players are substituted. There are some competition situations where fluids containing carbohydrate and electrolytes
After the game
Recovery after each day’s game or training session is essential to maintain your child’s fuel stores, and therefore perform at their best. This is particularly true when they are required to play over consecutive days at a tournament.
Combinations of foods that provide valuable amounts of carbohydrate and protein include yoghurt with fruit, smoothies, cheese sandwich or cheese on toast, baked beans on toast with a glass of milk, cereal with milk, or fruit and grain bars with a milk drink. If you have a long drive home after training or a game make sure that you pack a healthy recovery snack as it can be difficult to find appropriate options in transit). Recovery snacks and fluids should be:
Started within 30-60 minutes of finishing exercise
High in carbohydrate with a little protein
Quick and easy to prepare and eat
Available at the venue if it takes a long time to get home. Often junior Basketball players will be playing on cold, bleak winter days and recovery after the game should include warm clothing, a warm, protected area to sit and something warm to eat and drink. Recovery snack ideas can be found below.
Recovery snacks
Low fat fruit smoothies

10 easy ways to improve your basketball shooting percentage.
If you want to be a superb shooter, you MUST HAVE very good basketball shooting form and technique.
Here is the 10 easy ways to improve your basketball shooting percentage.
Locate your target(rim).
Locating the rim just a split second earlier gives your brain more time to subconsciously calculate distance and focus on your objective.
Your eyes should be on the rim as early as possible.
Keep your eyes on the target and do not follow the flight of the ball.
Keeping your target focus is very important!
To make this little trick work, you need to develop this habit in practice, which carries over into games.
Positioning and Balance.
Your shooting foot is slightly ahead of the non-shooting foot in a comfortable position. Point your feet in the general direction of the basket, but not necessarily directly at it.
Feet are shoulder width apart for good balance.
Flex/bend your knees on every shot.
Stop thinking and Start Shooting.
Don’t think of shooting while playing the game. Think of shooting in the shooting sessions or while practicing.
Just shoot the ball once you are comfortable with game. This method highly increase the shooting percentage.
Hand Grip.
Place the air hole between the middle and index fingers.
Line up your fingertip pads parallel to the long seams of the ball, so you can monitor the back spin. Leave space between the ball and the middle of your palm.
You should be able to insert a pencil between the ball and your palm area.Spread your fingers far enough apart to comfortably balance the ball in one hand. The ball should sit on your finger pads.
Shot pocket.
As you catch the ball, move it quickly into the shot pocket.
Line everything up so the ball and your shooting eye form a straight line to the basket. This is VERY important.
Position the ball several inches above your waist.
Grip the ball properly and shoot the ball.
Balance Hand.
Your non-shooting hand should be on the side of the ball. Your balance hand should not add force or spin to the shot.
Your non-shooting hand should not move on delivery and should ALWAYS come off the ball FIRST.
Get a partner.
One of the important aspects in playing the game is to have a partner.
When possible, try to shoot with a partner. Because when you’re alone, you end up chasing the rebound before following through properly.
This is important. Think about how you practice…
You shoot and then you start following the shot immediately so you can get lots of reps. Guess what? This can mess up your follow-through.
You need to FINISH each shot and hold your follow-through. That’s why we recommend getting a partner to rebound for you.
Now just because you can’t find a partner you can (and should) still practice by yourself. Just be aware of holding your follow through.
Shoot the ball before game.
Before every practice and game, face the basket and shoot 50 EASY shots about four to ten feet from the basket.
Not only does this improve your shooting form, but it helps to develop phenomenal confidence.
You’ll quickly become very good at grooving these shots over and over. You’ll see the ball going in the basket over and over.
You’ll swish the ball repeatedly and probably shoot 60%, 70%, 80%, or more, which is great for your psyche.
Hold your Follow-Through.
Holding your follow through solves a multitude of shooting problems.
This simple movement helps you maintain good basketball shooting technique without even thinking about it.
Your wrists should be floppy (relaxed).
Fingers should be pointed at the target (rim).
You should see your fingers at the top square of the back board.Hold your follow through position until the ball hits the rim.
Quick chart and watch DVD.
Simply by watching great shooters groove their shots over and over, you can improve your confidence and form.
Practice to shoot and play the game with a healthy mind. Ask your partner to record your playing skill as chart inorder to analyse yourself and improve your skills.
Not to mention, you should never stop learning. There are lots of good shooting DVDs and books for you to learn from.
