Workshop Update: Kaidan Revoiced - Community Expansion 1.0 Launch!

After two years of development, the Kaidan Workshop Staff is proud to present Kaidan Revoiced - Community Expansion (KRCE)!

First and foremost, none of this would be possible without livtempleton graciously giving us permission for our project! Throughout the years, the assets she's allowed the Skyrim modding community to build upon has kept Kaidan alive in thousands of modlists, providing the opportunity for even more players to enjoy her original creations; we're very honored to be added to the list of modders whose creations are inspired by her work. When we started the Workshop, we had no idea if anyone would even notice our project; a new voice actor, a new iteration of an already established character, and no product to show for it in advance. The only thing we could offer the general public at the time was the promise of transparency and community cooperation throughout the process. So we created a budget for revoicing Kaidan, a plan for community involvement, and hit the ground running. We added new staff, taught ourselves new skills as the scope of the project evolved, and leaned on the advice, ideas, and encouragement from our community. Alongside the (mostly) monthly updates on our Tumblr and taking suggestions from our 'I Had An Idea!' Discord channel, our methods for ensuring transparency during development evolved; our Community Team began hosting public meetings via our Discord to discuss our current workflow, answer questions, and conduct live script readings of our original scripts, to ensure that our Writing Team was matching the original tone set by livtempleton. We also streamed our beta footage on Twitch, trying our best to stress test the new framework built by our Creation Kit Team while also taking more suggestions from our audience for future content. Finally, we were incredibly pleased to be able to host an Open Beta for KRCE this past October & November for our Discord community, as a special thank you for their support. We were able to get some excellent feedback on some of our new follower features, as well as hunt down any missed audio or errors our internal testing missed. All in all, it took many, many people to bring this mod to life, and our Staff is incredibly humbled and grateful for the support of everyone involved. While this 1.0 version will be available indefinitely for those who prefer it, the Workshop Staff is very excited to begin creating more original content moving forward into 2025! One of our original scripts for the Daedric quest "Pieces of the Past" is in the 1.0, so you can check it out to get a sense of the tone our writers are going for! Gore: A lordling once hired the Ravens to escort him to Valenwood. Nice guy. He was from Skingrad but Bosmer by blood. Wanted to "find his roots" I guess. He'd read every book about the place. All he ever talked about.

Lucien: I see... Did he find what he was seeking?

Gore: I doubt it. One night he left camp for a piss or something. Will-o-the-Wisp got him before we knew it. Poor sod never even made it to the border.

Lucien: Oh.

Lucien: Why are you telling me this? Not a cheerful comparison, I must say.

Gore: Don't know. I think it's brave, what you're doing. Seeing the world. Just remember this isn't one of your stories, okay?

Lucien: I'm still not quite certain I understand.

Gore: You've got a big brain. I'm in no hurry to see it in pieces crushed out of your skull.

Lucien: Ah.

Gore: My what now?

Lucien: I know Remiel has been helping with your reading. I have all manner of books to share as well, of course. And writing! We must work on improving your penmanship.

this made me realize how little mods i know of/used...

i still use inigo/kaidan, but they are on the verge of being deleted. Inigo was the first follower I ever installed, shortly after I got Kaidan. They felt very new at first, but I've sort of... grown apart from them. Kaidan and Inigo are also mean to Cicero, which plays apart. I also didn't like how Auri spoke of Kaidan, but now that I don't like Kaidan much, I'm pretty okay with it.

maybe i should try checking out the other followers? i dunno.

Wanted to make a nice little list of new-ish, not as known (from what I’ve seen,) cvfs that should get more love! (Also, if you have any recommendations comment them!)

Gore- Sweet pea needs a hug! He’s so funny. The voice delivery is amazing! And his backstory makes me want to just hold this kicked puppy. Also, if you’re over 18 and have a discord, highly recommend his server. It’s just... It’s a thing of beauty.  

Nessa - Haven’t played with her too much. But she is just so cool! She’s a thief, has a dwemer prosthetic, really neat combat mechanic, and she says “By Mora’s many armpits.” (That may not be too important, but I like it!)

Aniya - Again, haven’t played her too much. But just 100% wholesome! Her voice is the sweetest thing and is just so lovely to have around!

Katana - Really cool! Also, love the DB being a third wheel. Nice voice, cool animations, and fun quests! 

Yazakh - Along with Gore she’s in my main party atm. Her voice is so good! The writing is amazing! An amazing additions if you’re looking for a straight-man for the party (That’s the right term I think.) Really has a nice dynamic for a chaotic party.

Workshop Update: January 2025

Howdy Workshop Spectators! This is a pretty thick update, so please read through it carefully.

It's been a little over a month since our initial release; excluding a few minor bugs, it's gone exceedingly smooth. We'll be rolling out our first round of bug fixes soon; we thank you for your continued patience!

To that end, we're incredibly thrilled to have clinched a spot for Nexus's January Mod of the Month! The reception from the community at large has been overwhelmingly positive, and the Staff is humbled by your praise.

Speaking of the Staff; for those of you who have applied to join the Workshop staff, all candidates have received their respective set of follow-up questions. You have until February 10th to respond with your answers, or you will be removed from the candidacy pool.

Moving right along, the Workshop's Two Year Anniversary is coming up on February 27th! We'll be hosting a celebration on the server on both the 27th & 28th -- the event invite will be shared next week, so look forward to it.

We'll be going over the 2024-2025 End of Year budget report, presenting our new budget proposal for the next leg of our project, and showing off some of the new Workshop Original scripts we have cooking behind the scenes. Additionally, we'll be going over the results of the newest community poll.

As we focus in on creating new Kaidan content, one of the core problems our Writing Team has run into is how to handle his morality with regards to certain choices the player can make. In short, the moral compass of the original iteration of Kaidan is effectively centered around the Player; there aren't any quests or objectives that are too 'evil' to deter his support of the Player.

While functionally this does allow for players to keep him throughout their playthrough, regardless of their actions, it also makes Kaidan's existing narrative regarding redemption and carving his own path fall flat (kind of hard to say you're a changed man if you're only mildly miffed that the Player blotted out the sun). Our writers feel that there are certain 'points of no return' that Kaidan would narratively have; where if a Player insisted on engaging in certain questlines or decisions (e.g. blotting out the sun), Kaidan would refuse to be morally complicit.

Therefore, we bring this query to you all: should Kaidan's moral compass be player-centric, or should it be narrative-centric?

A narrative-centric Kaidan would have questlines that he would refuse to participate in, scaling all the way up to possibly leaving your employ (or worse if you're married - the betrayal! the angst!). A player-centric Kaidan might complain about your evil ways, but will never leave the player.

Besides that doozy of a question, we're also seeking some feedback regarding the inclusion of the legacy wedding clothing (do you use it? can we overhaul them into something nicer?), as well as what to do with our beloved Autumnwatch (how would you feel about us moving the location? what about a full design overhaul?).

AU where the Dragonborn sends Khash to school and almost every day a different person picks her up.

At first it's not too weird. Like when an Argonian shows up and Khash immediately runs to her "Uncle Xelzaz" Khash's teacher just thinks it's nice, given she's adopted, that she has adults in her life who are like her.

Then there's her "Uncle Lucien" who gets distracted reading a history textbook. He points out multiple inaccuracies but is polite enough about it.

And it only gets weirder. There's a woman with a robot spider. A handsome man who looks very uncomfortable but lights up as soon as he sees Khash. A friendly blue khajiit. An Altmer who cracks ten jokes in the five minutes it takes to collect Khash. Another Altmer whom the teacher is pretty damn sure is that runsway Aldmeri prince.

At one point in class they do one of those activities where the kids draw a picture of their family. Khash considers for a moment and then asks for extra paper.

The figures in her drawing are mostly familiar to the teacher. Except for one or two. An Orc has never picked Khash up from school before, for instance.

But it's clear this kid is really, very loved.
