Yes - It has to be instilled into innocent young minds!
My ex and I had just moved to Atlanta, and settled into a duplex apartment in East Point. We were in our mid-twenties, and very liberal, which pissed off her very bigoted father. There was a young couple around our age with whom we became friendly. They also had a little boy around 4 or 5 years old they called Peanut.
One weekend they asked us to keep Peanut for them over Saturday night into Sunday evening, to which we agreed. We spent a fun night with the kid, slept in Sunday morning, and later, decided to go to a nearby steakhouse for lunch. We got Peanut cleaned up and off we went to the steak house, just north of us in West End. For those of you who don't know, West end is a predominantly-Black area of Atlanta.
We went through the line, placed our orders, got our drinks, and went to find a table. The dining area was about two-thirds full and the customers were mostly Black.
As we took our sets and settled in, Peanut got more and more agitated. We tried to settle him down, telling him to behave, when, in his loudest, keening childish voice, he screams, "There's N*****s in here! We were mortified, which I'm sure showed on our faces! As every head in the place turned and glared at us the best I could do was put my hands up and apologize, saying "Sorry! He's not our kid! We're just baby-sitting him"
Peanut's parents had never exhibited any kind of racist behavior around us but that kid had to learn that from someone! If I had to bet I think it was his mom's father, because he as a hardcore christian nutcase!

On August 6, 1942, Southern Railway adopted a policy effectively denying dining service to African American passengers on its rail cars.
The policy mandated that trains serve white passengers and African Americans meals at different times, which resulted in the denial of meals to African Americans. They further entrenched its commitment to segregation and to denying its African American customers service by adopting a policy that reserved 10 of the train’s 11 dining tables exclusively for white passengers at all times. The one remaining table in the dining car that was theoretically open to African Americans was available for use by white passengers and was to be given to white passengers upon request. If African Americans requested service while white passengers were dining, “they should be advised that they will be served just as soon as those compartments are vacated.”
In 1942, Elmer W. Henderson, an African American attorney, civil rights leader, member of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Fair Employment Practices Commission, and one of the first African American graduates of Georgetown University Law Center, boarded a Southern Railway train, traveling first-class from DC to Atlanta. The train’s dining car remained and railroad employees denied Mr. Henderson a dining table based on his race. The train reached Greensboro and the dining car ceased serving passengers. Neither Mr. Henderson nor any other African Americans ever had a chance to eat.
He filed a complaint with the federal Interstate Commerce Commission, alleging that the railroad’s policy violated the Interstate Commerce Act and the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution. The ICC denied relief, finding that Mr. Henderson “had sustained no compensable damage as a result of the disadvantage caused him” by Southern Railway. It would take six years for the SCOTUS to reexamine the case. While ruling in Henderson v. United States that Southern Railway’s policies violated the Interstate Commerce Act, the Court avoided declaring racial segregation unconstitutional, paving the way for that practice to continue for years. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Can interior design in Georgia help businesses incorporate local art and craftsmanship into their interiors?
Interior design in Georgia is known for its ability to blend aesthetics with functionality seamlessly. One of the unique ways designers accomplish this is by incorporating local art and craftsmanship into the interiors of businesses. In this blog, we'll explore how interior design in Georgia helps businesses celebrate local culture and creativity by integrating regional artistry into their interior spaces.
Georgia's Rich Artistic Heritage
Georgia has a rich and diverse artistic heritage, from the vibrant arts scene in Atlanta to the traditional crafts of rural communities. Interior designers in the state recognize the value of tapping into this cultural wealth to create unique and engaging business interiors.
Showcasing Local Talent
One of the ways interior design in Georgia supports local art and craftsmanship is by showcasing the work of local artists and artisans. Businesses often collaborate with artists to feature their pieces as focal points in their interiors.
For example, in a boutique hotel in Savannah, interior designers might collaborate with a local painter to create custom artwork that reflects the city's historic charm. These pieces not only add a touch of local authenticity but also enhance the overall ambiance of the hotel.
Integrating Traditional Craftsmanship
Georgia is home to various traditional crafts and artisanal traditions, such as woodworking, pottery, and textile weaving. Interior design in Georgia leverages these traditions by incorporating handmade and locally crafted furnishings and decor.
In an Athens restaurant, designers might commission a local woodworker to create custom tables and chairs, adding a rustic and authentic touch to the dining area. These bespoke pieces not only contribute to the restaurant's aesthetics but also support local craftsmanship.
Fostering Community Connections
Interior design in Georgia understand the importance of fostering community connections through their work. By incorporating local art and craftsmanship, they create a sense of place and belonging for both employees and customers.
In a Macon co-working space, designers may curate a rotating art gallery featuring local artists' work. This not only supports the local art community but also creates an ever-evolving and inspiring environment for co-workers.
Adding a Unique Touch to Commercial Spaces
Businesses in Georgia seek to distinguish themselves in the market by creating memorable and unique interiors. Interior designers achieve this by infusing local artistry into commercial spaces.
For instance, in an Atlanta tech company's headquarters, designers might install a custom-made light fixture crafted by a local glassblower. This unique piece not only becomes a conversation starter but also reflects the company's commitment to the local community.
Preserving and Celebrating Cultural Heritage
Georgia's cultural heritage is diverse, with influences from African American, Native American, and European traditions. Interior design in Georgia are keen on preserving and celebrating this heritage by incorporating cultural elements into interior designs.
In a historic Augusta building transformed into a cultural center, designers may use architectural elements that pay homage to the region's Native American history. This not only respects the building's heritage but also enhances its cultural significance.
Conclusion
In conclusion, interior design in Georgia is a powerful tool for businesses to celebrate and support local art and craftsmanship. By showcasing local talent, integrating traditional craftsmanship, fostering community connections, adding a unique touch to commercial spaces, and preserving cultural heritage, interior designers create interiors that reflect the heart and soul of the local community.
Whether it's a hotel in Savannah, a restaurant in Athens, a co-working space in Macon, a tech company in Atlanta, or a cultural center in Augusta, interior design in Georgia is dedicated to infusing local artistry into business interiors. This not only enhances aesthetics but also deepens the connection between businesses and the communities they serve. Interior design in Georgia is not just about creating beautiful spaces; it's about creating meaningful and authentic environments that resonate with people. Maximizing Outdoor Living: Creative and Functional Patio Enclosure Ideas
Tumblr media
Imagine waking up to the soft chirping of birds, sipping your morning coffee ensconced in a plush swing chair, as the gentle morning sun filters through your artfully designed patio enclosure. That, my friend, is the true luxury of living – the seamless blend of indoor comfort and the captivating charm of the great outdoors. As a trusted name in the industry, Coolscreens helps bring these dreams to life, offering an array of retractable screen and shade systems, security shutters, and porch enclosure systems across metro Atlanta, north Georgia, and select cities in North and South Carolina. But before we get lost in the allure of outdoor living, let's dive into some patio enclosure ideas that are as creative as they are functional.
A Breath of Fresh Air with Indoor Plants
Bringing a touch of nature into your patio enclosure is a beautiful way to merge the line between indoor and outdoor spaces. Indoor plants not only provide a refreshing aesthetic but also improve the quality of air around you. Consider creating a small tropical oasis with ferns and palm trees, or go rustic with cacti and succulents for a low-maintenance setup.
Setting the Mood with Outdoor Lighting
Craft a magical ambiance in your patio enclosure with outdoor lighting. String lights draped across the ceiling, soft lanterns placed strategically, or solar-powered LED lights around the periphery can transform your patio into a fairytale setting as the sun sets.
Furniture that Invites Leisure
From a hammock for the lazy afternoons to a swing chair perfect for an engrossing read, furniture plays a pivotal role in making your patio enclosure inviting. Consider a cozy reading nook or a dining table for outdoor meals. It's all about designing a space that encourages leisure and relaxation.
A Symphony of Senses with a Water Feature
The calming sound of trickling water has a tranquil effect, making water features a terrific addition to your patio. It could be a minimalist wall-mounted water feature or a koi pond. It's about creating a harmony of senses in your outdoor space.
Liven Up the Space with Art and Accessories
Whether it’s an artistic wall mural, a vibrant rug, or themed decorations for your upcoming BBQ party, these elements can bring a dash of your personality into the patio. Music, games, and entertainment systems can further enhance the fun quotient of your outdoor space. Be sure to check the rating of any electrical equipment you use if your enclosure gets warm in the Georgian sun.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I customize my patio enclosure to match my house's aesthetics? A: Absolutely! At Coolscreens, we work with you to design custom patio enclosures that reflect your style and preferences while ensuring functionality and durability. Q: What materials do you use for patio enclosures? A: We use top-quality materials suited to withstand weather elements. The choice of materials, from aluminum and glass to screen mesh, depends on the design, location, and your specific needs. Q: Can patio enclosures be installed in any season? As we bask in the beauty of these patio enclosure ideas, here's a question for you: if you could add one feature to your dream patio enclosure, what would it be? A swing chair nestled among the plants, a custom mural, or a bubbling water feature? The possibilities are as boundless as your imagination! Concluding Your Outdoor Living Journey Creating an exquisite outdoor living space is not just about aesthetics. It's about fostering an environment that connects you with nature while providing the comfort and privacy of your home. November 1939: Adoption Rumors
November 2, 1939 – Miami News
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard will be a papa and mama soon, via the cradle route…
November 3, 1939 – Des Moines Register
Their not-so-private affairs: The simple, pleasant process of going out for dinner can and does provoke a minor crisis in the lives of some folks.
The Gables, for instance, would much prefer to stir up something at home.
But the other night, Clark and Carole decided to brave the tourist gantlet and eat out – their first café appearance since their marriage. Clark had just finished a radio rehearsal and the Brown Derby loomed invitingly around the corner.
Stares.
They strode boldly through the bar and into the Derby’s jam-packed dining room. Sightseeing customers getting a wallop out of the presence of Wallace Beery and three “B” actors dropped their silver and stared in astonishment.
Soon a crowd began collecting at the door. Autograph seekers from the nearby broadcast studios came on the run. Three policemen joined to force the fanatics back.
Meanwhile, the excited café manager phoned his publicity man. Two photographers appeared from nowhere. Bulbs flashed. The Gables were photographed looking at the menu, then looking at each other.
Bolder.
Pretty soon the tourists grew bold. One by one they brought over menus to be autographed. When the check was placed on the table, Clark merely glanced at it and pushed it toward Carole. She settled and left a crisp bank note for the waiter.
The job of getting into their car demanded police help.
Inside the Derby, the head waiter was conversing with the press agent.
“Whatdye suppose ever brought them out?” asked the H.W.
“Why, ‘Gone with the Wind’ of course,” returned the P.A. “Don’t you know Gable and Lombard have gotta go to Atlanta for that world premiere Dec. 16? They were bucking the crowd here just to get in training. But boy – wait’ll they get a taste of that southern hospitality!”
November 14, 1939 – San Pedro News
Take those Carole Lombard-Clark Gable adoption denials with a grain of salt…
November 17, 1939 – Hartford Courant
Carole Lombard was buying some guns for Clark Gable’s birthday between takes on her latest picture. She pointed one of the guns in the air – and down came a dead duck – planted tehre bt Brian Ahern
November 19, 1939 – Los Angeles Times
Clark Gable and Caroel Lombard will feast at home.
November 20, 1939 – Minneapolis Star
FASHION AND LOCAL INDUSTRY NOTE: Out in Hollywood Clark Gable is sporting a brand new, fringed bucksin jacket made for him by Carl Scherer, Minneapolis taxidermist. So pleased about it is Clark that he’s just ordered a whole suit of the same.
Incidentally, Carole Lombard has also done a bit of shopping in town (by mail). She bought a whole flock of wooden duck decoys from Leo Boutin and Leo’s already had two reorders on them.
November 24, 1939 – Los Angeles Times
Hollywood studios closed yesterday for observance of Thanksgiving in accordance with President Roosevelt’s proclamation advancing the day one week ahead. Film celebrities for the most part remained at home for turkey dinners, although the popular cafes reported many reservations.
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard invited numerous friends to their ranch for a spread with all of the trimmings, while George Raft entertained at his new home.
November 24, 1939 – Morning Post
Every place we stopped the “insiders” are convinced that Carole Lombard and Clark Gable are going to adopt a baby boy right after the first of the year.
All I could say to the reporters and fans who asked whether the stories were true is to quote Clark, who says the Gables are not going to adopt a little boy and if they become parents the baby will be one of their own.
November 25, 1939 – Santa Rosa Republican
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard have sent 12 “prize chickens” to the Rev. Kenneth Engle, who married them in Kingman, Ariz…
November 26, 1939 – St. Louis Globe
Although Carole Lombard and Clark Gable have denied the baby adoption story, their intimates say the denial is made in a merely Pickwickian sense.
November 26, 1939 – Oakland Tribune
Bride Carole Lombard should find very little difficulty in arranging Clark Gable’s menu. He’s rarely eccentric about his food, except that when he Dagwoods out to the refrigerator for a late snack, “Blondie” Lombard is likely to move over to the edge of her side of the bed. Onions! Nothing is so tasty to Clark as a raw onion sandwich.
November 28, 1939 – The Kansas City Star
Carole Lombard called up her home and asked “Is Mr. Gable there?” And this is what the maid shouted to Clark – “Hey Pa, Ma’s on the phone!” Even Carole thought this was carrying informality too far.
November 29, 1939 – Ogden Standard
Carole Lombard and Clark Gable are not going to adopt a baby – because they’ve decided in favor of the Gable brand.

On August 6, 1942, Southern Railway, an interstate railroad company based in Washington, D.C., adopted a policy effectively denying dining service to Black passengers on its rail cars. For years, the Southern Railway policy mandated that trains serve white passengers and Black passengers meals at different times, which often resulted in the denial of meals to Black passengers. In 1942, Southern Railway further entrenched its commitment to segregation and to denying its Black customers service by adopting a policy which reserved 10 of the train’s 11 dining tables exclusively for white passengers at all times. The one remaining table in the dining car that was theoretically open to Black passengers was also available for use by white passengers and was to be given to white passengers upon request. If Black passengers requested service while white passengers were dining, “they should be advised that they will be served just as soon as those compartments are vacated.” In 1942, Elmer W. Henderson, a Black attorney, civil rights leader, member of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Fair Employment Practices Commission, and one of the first Black graduates of Georgetown University Law Center, boarded a Southern Railway train, traveling first-class from Washington, D.C., to Atlanta, Georgia. The train’s dining car remained occupied with white passengers for the duration of his journey, and railroad employees denied Mr. Henderson a dining table based on his race. At 9 pm, the train reached Greensboro, North Carolina, and the dining car ceased serving passengers. Neither Mr. Henderson nor any other Black passengers ever had a chance to eat dinner. Mr. Henderson subsequently filed a complaint with the federal Interstate Commerce Commission, alleging that the railroad’s policy violated the Interstate Commerce Act and the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution. The ICC denied relief, finding that Mr. Henderson “had sustained no compensable damage as a result of the disadvantage caused him” by Southern Railway. It would take five years for the Supreme Court to reexamine Mr. Henderson’s case. While ruling in Henderson v. United States that Southern Railway’s policies violated the Interstate Commerce Act, the Court avoided declaring racial segregation unconstitutional, paving the way for that practice to continue for years. To learn more about America’s long and enduring history of racial segregation, as well as its ongoing legacy, read EJI’s report, Segregation in America.

“...Historians concur that live-in domestic service was primarily an urban phenomenon in the late nineteenth century. One estimate suggests that between 15 and 30 percent of northeastern city-dwellers hired live-in domestics. The historian David Katzman, who has generated the most refined statistics, demonstrates that even within relative geographical proximity, city-dwellers hired servants more often than did rural dwellers, and city-dwellers with large pools of foreign labor more than city-dwellers without. Nationwide at midcentury there was one domestic servant for every ten families, with a considerably higher ratio in large cities like Boston and New York.
A greater proportion of Bostonians hired domestic servants than did residents of any other northern city, with 219 servants per thousand families. With traditions of household service born in slavery, even after the Civil War, the South led the nation in its reliance on domestic servants, with Atlanta in 1880 boasting 331 servants per thousand families. Even in the South, though, the difference between city and country was notable, with Atlanta in 1900 hiring four times as many servants per thousand families as in the rest of Georgia. Together these figures suggest the flourishing of an era in the history of Victorianism. It was common for American bourgeois city-dwellers on the Atlantic seaboard, even ones of modest means, to rely on the labor of maids to sustain their households.
Of course, the end of the story is popular cliché. With the opening of more lucrative and less degrading jobs for young women as sales clerks, ‘‘typewriters,’’ and teachers, the ‘‘servant problem’’ became terminal, and by the First World War, American housewives could not depend on the hiring of live-in domestic help to assist them in their housework. It is significant, though, that even when ‘‘necessity’’ suggested the reintegration of daughters into the domestic economy, they were gone for good. The culture had put girls to other uses, from which they would not return to their mothers’ sides.
We still might ask why girls were often excused from domestic labor— especially given the compounding weight of the advice literature recommending otherwise. The answer lies in the increasing role played by daughters and servants in the bourgeois quest for refinement. Even when the gross number of live-in servants declined as production moved out of the home, the hiring of at least one domestic remained a prerequisite for middle-class status. The statistics on who hired servants bear out the middle-classness of this phenomenon, with 65 percent of servants in the Northeast in 1860 working in households with no other servants. In an increasingly mobile and prosperous society, hiring servants was one way to demonstrate standing, a concrete and conspicuous way of demonstrating what you had left behind.
One historian argues that the cultural importance of servants should be measured in the amount that some less prosperous families were willing to spend to hire them—sometimes as much as one-third of family income. Clearly, the freeing of daughters from steady household work and the hiring of domestic servants of lesser, often foreign, status went in tandem with the changing purpose of the home itself. Eighteenth-century households had required helpers to assist in domestic production. The homes of the mid– nineteenth century elite instead featured housework ‘‘as the creation and maintenance of comfort and appearance,’’ in the words of the historian Christine Stansell.
As the Beecher sisters observed, families were increasing ‘‘in refinement’’ such that they no longer wished to live in close intimacy with ‘‘uncultured neighbors,’’ far less daughters of foreign shores, who were working as servants. Thus one mill-owning family in rural Vermont made a point of hiring Irish help rather than the daughters of neighboring farmers, who might object to eating in the kitchen and expect to be ‘‘one of the family.’’ Architects reflected such changes by midcentury, such that servants’ quarters were designed as discrete parts of the house, with back stairs and separate entrances. Custom increasingly favored uniforms and servant dining tables in the kitchen.
At the same time that middle classes aspired to higher standards of comfort and appearance in accordance with new possibilities, women’s primary responsibility shifted from the supervision of a household manufactory to family nurturance, the raising and socializing of children. Much has been written about the evolution of new ideals for motherhood following the American Revolution, as women gained responsibility for raising virtuous citizens. ‘‘Republican mothers’’ shaped new daughters as well as new sons. Initially considered necessary allies in the steady work of processing the stuff of survival, the daughters of middle-class families became themselves the prime products the home produced—the embodiment of the principles of sensibility and refinement.
Mothers’ new responsibilities did not erase old ones. The historian Jeanne Boydston has appropriately criticized the readiness of her colleagues to mistake the ideology of domesticity for reality, arguing that by no means did the productive work of the home cease with the industrial revolution. Instead, Boydston argues, the emphasis on the emotional task of mothering tended to eclipse from view, but not eliminate, the continued real labor—the making of clothing, the putting up of preserves, the carrying of fuel—still carried on in the middle-class home. She is right in her argument that ‘‘paid domestic workers did not free the mistress of the household from labor.’’
But even Boydston acknowledges that domestic servants instead did the work that would have been done by other females in the household—including adult female relatives and daughters. An interesting case in point is the urban family of woman’s rights advocates Henry Blackwell, Lucy Stone, and their daughter Alice Stone Blackwell. As Boydston tells us, Lucy Stone, who was raised on a farm, still kept chickens, worked a garden, and tended a horse and cow, even as she lived a prosperous middle-class existence outside of Boston. Alice Blackwell later remembered that ‘‘she dried all the herbs and put up all the fruits in their season. She made her own yeast, her own bread, her own dried beef, even her own soap.’’
In her lively diary, however, Alice Blackwell reports doing little household work. Such chores as emerge in her diary were designed to interrupt her incessant reading, which was thought to be responsible for her bad headaches. Thus her cousin, visiting the household, ‘‘had undertaken to find me something to stop my reading: churning; and I churned in the cellar till the butter came.’’ In fact, advice writers who had failed in their efforts to promote domestic work for daughters on other grounds often focused on the value of domestic labor as a source of exercise. The Beecher sisters observed that if girls did strenuous housework, their parents would be spared the expense of gymnasiums. ‘‘Does it not seem poor economy to pay servants for letting our muscles grow feeble, and then to pay operators to exercise them for us?’’
Louisa May Alcott, whose collected opus represents a powerful gloss on the domestic debates of late-Victorianism, repeatedly suggested the healthfulness of housework, ‘‘the best sort of gymnastics for girls,’’ according to Dr. Alec in Eight Cousins. Her Old-Fashioned Girl explicitly contrasts the healthy republican daughter skilled in domestic arts with the languid late-Victorian belle, afflicted with boredom because of her lack of home chores. Mothers undoubtedly continued both to supervise and perform much household maintenance, but they did so assisted by domestics rather than their own daughters. What did middle-class girls do instead of housework?
This was a question which greatly concerned commentators, who asked, as did Mary Livermore in 1883, ‘‘What shall we do with our daughters?’’ Mary Virginia Terhune, too, lamented the passing of housework as girls’ raison d’être and with it ‘‘that prime need of a human being—something to do.’’ Parents found a range of things for daughters to do, including the ornamental skills of sewing, playing piano, writing and reading associated with self-culture. Increasingly, also, they sent daughters to school. Common schools designed for both sexes did not include sewing.
In later years, the Beecher sisters observed, ‘‘A girl often can not keep pace with her class, if she gives any time to domestic matters.’’ And they noted, ‘‘Accordingly she is excused from them all during the whole term of her education.’’ Girls themselves noted the increasing power of lessons in any competition with housework. Agnes Hamilton remarked that first her French tutor and then her German homework prevented her from doing her ‘‘share of Monday’s work.’’ It was not long before the work of some girls was reassigned.
Those who were serious about domestic education, such as a composer of ‘‘An Ideal Education of Girls’’ that appeared in an 1886 issue of Education, suggested, in fact, that this disjunction be acknowledged. A girl should receive the same education as a boy until the age of twelve, its author suggested. At that time a girl should drop out of school for two years and learn the complete running of a household, returning to school only with that formal apprenticeship accomplished. Only such complete separation of activities would allow the household its due.”

Chapter 4. The Boutique Robillard, my GWTW fanfiction
Atlanta, May 1876
Scarlett stood on the pavement, checking the wrought-iron sign that had just been installed above the freshly painted storefront. "The Boutique Robillard", a simple name, a French touch, easy for the customer to remember. She had set her sights on this building, whose vast spaces had just been vacated. With its large display windows, ist Corinthian columns separating the exhibition areas, and four small private fitting rooms, the shop was reminiscent of the splendour of a plantation reception hall of the past. The lighting was provided by beautiful gilt bronze wall lights with cut crystal tulips. Three large, finely chiselled bronze and brass arms with gas spouts hidden under crystal cups, surrounded an impressive white milk glass lampshade. They enlightened the cream burlap-covered walls and made the flamed mahogany veneer of the shop furniture glisten. Elegance and femininity, that's the atmosphere Scarlett wanted to create in her new business. Clearly, the gamble paid off. "Mrs O'Hara, could you tell me where the fans should be placed?  "Emma Whising interrupted Scarlett in her contemplation. This dynamic young widow was delighted to have been hired. Another saleswoman, a seamstress, a retoucher and a delivery man completed the staff brigade. "The three glass cabinets are for fashion accessories. Place fans, umbrellas and parasols in the first cabinet. Highlight silk gloves and mittens. Hair accessories, brushes, silver combs, hairpins should also be displayed there. Devote an entire display case to leather purses, pearl reticules, and embroidered ball pouches. The largest glass cabinet is for hats, bonnets and capelines." Scarlett sighed with contentment. What a rebirth in her life since that fateful day in November 1873! She had decided to stop dwelling on the past. A few minutes of introspection would be enough for her to sweep away almost three years.     First the shock of the divorce. The clean and frank break with Rhett, the love of her life, well, of her old life. It is true that he had greatly facilitated her task to turn the page: by crudely mocking her physical appearance deteriorated by lack of appetite, alcohol abuse and the absence of her husband, Rhett had brilliantly succeeded in making her feel ashamed. She, Scarlett O'Hara, had become uglier than the least of the whores, he had made her understand. "What the hell !" The affront had to be addressed. Solange Robillard's little girl was going to straighten her head, and quickly!     The day after Rhett left, she ordered Dilcey to throw out all the liquor bottles in the house, the wine cellar and the kitchen. A strict schedule of meal times in the dining room with her children was put in place. Breakfasts, lunches and dinners were calibrated to ensure balanced meals with fresh vegetables and fruits. As in Tara during the war, there was no question of leaving the table before finishing one's plate. This had always been the rule for Ella and Wade. To the surprise of her children, this was now also the rule for their mother.
Thanks to this diet cooking, her graceful curves started to be restored and her figure slowly sculpted. To gain back her skin's elasticity, Scarlett took a daily walk with her children. Ella Lorena was reluctant the first few days, not being used to long walks. But soon the outing was a time of discovery, play and laughter. The O'Hara Hamilton Kennedy family was coming back to life. The two children's faces were slightly tanned by the sun. Scarlett took care to bring an umbrella to preserve her pearly complexion. Her cheeks were flushed with physical exertion and fresh air.     How sweet it was to take care of one's body again! The relaxing scented baths were followed by the application of regenerating creams and ointments. The texture of her skin became softer and smoother. The beautiful hair that Rhett used to like to wrap around his neck at night at the beginning of their marriage had become dull, the tips brittle. It took Prissy's careful handling to untangle the long tresses and massage them with castor oil. Her nails were treated in the same way to strengthen them. The physical discipline she had been practising for many months was eventually rewarded when, on a sunny morning, Scarlett gazed at her reflection in the large mirror in her bedroom. The young woman in front of her radiated health and beauty. Her first battle was won!
"Mrs O'Hara, should I sort the clothes by colour or size? "Emma asked. "Choose one of each item from the display shelves. You will carefully arrange the other sizes inside the drawers of the counters. Above all, don't forget to protect each piece with tissue paper. » Emma set about her task, marvelling at the quality of the interior design of the furniture, which was covered in bird's eye maple veneer. The rich purple hues of the sideboards and wardrobes contrasted beautifully with the golden sheen of the wood inside. At first glance, the clientele was assured of the presence of luxury in every detail. Scarlett resumed her rambling. Her biggest battle, of course, had been to fight the infamy of divorce. News of the Butler couple's scandalous separation had spread like wildfire through the good society of Atlanta and the surrounding counties. How could they not be offended? It was the first divorce to occur in this Georgia city. Two camps were facing each other: the ladies of the Sewing Circle - headed by Mrs Merriweather, Mrs Meade and Mrs India Wilkes - had welcomed Captain Butler's decision. „The good man had loved his little Bonnie so much! For years he had endured his wife's disgusting attitude towards Ashley Wilkes without flinching.“  "Serves her right," said Mrs. Easling. "This will bring the arrogant, pretentious Scarlett down from her pedestal. » These well-born ladies agreed that, sadly, her offspring could no longer be invited to their grandchildren's parties and birthdays. "It's a shame about poor Wade Hampton Hamilton and Elena Lorena Kennedy, but it's all about the goodwill of our society. » Yet a minority had sided with Scarlett O'Hara Hamilton Kennedy. How could such a boor as Butler dare to abandon his wife and children? All of Atlanta knew of this vermin's degrading association with Belle Watling, the most notorious brothel keeper in the state of Georgia. If Ellen and Gerald O'Hara had been alive, they would never have accepted the misalliance of a Robillard with a banished man from his native Charleston. The first to be scandalised by the news was, of course, Scarlett's solicitor who had to deal with the formalities of the divorce. Henry Hamilton, Wade Hampton's great uncle, was incensed that this Scalawag could jeopardise the future of Charles Hamilton's heir by damaging his mother's reputation. A divorcee's son! How was this brave little boy going to endure the offence? "Butler gone? Good riddance! "Ashley Wilkes was the first to think so, and to say so loudly. He had taken the time to analyse his cowardly behaviour when India had created the scandal on his birthday. Instead of defending Scarlett and assuring everyone that nothing had happened between them two at the sawmill, he had taken refuge, as usual, behind the fragile figure of his wife. Melanie had proudly protected her dear sister until her last breath. Since the war, Scarlett had bravely helped the Wilkes family. When his beloved Melly died, she took charge, as she had in the past. She organized a funeral worthy of the greatest lady Atlanta had ever known. Today, it was up to him to protect 'his' delightful Scarlett who had had the misfortune to meet this sad sire at Twelve Oaks. Scarlett, so full of passion, whom this Butler had broken. Ashley's support warmed his childhood friend's heart. She had been delighted to find that he had defended her against her sister India at a meeting of the ladies of the sewing room in his house. "This is my home, India. In my presence and under my roof, I forbid anyone to criticise the sister my Melly loved so deeply. "His unexpected tirade and determined tone had stunned those present at the meeting. His words were widely reported among their friends and acquaintances. What had hurt the former Mrs Butler most was the disastrous impact of the divorce on Wade and Ella.  „Divorce". It was a word Wade had already heard spoken in hushed tones around him, like a threat hanging over Peachtree Street. More than once, the young boy had had to raise his voice at a classmate who had made fun of his mother. He had even come to blows, much to Scarlett's dismay. For Ella Lorena, the word 'divorce' meant nothing. She just noticed that her friends Bridget and Karen had not invited her to their birthday parties. Above all, they missed Uncle Rhett. He had always told them that he considered them his children. Finally, he had abandoned them, without any explanation, simply by bringing them presents in November. As if the two children were no more valuable than two packages. This drama brought the mother and the two children together. A valve had fallen off. The little girl with the red curls was no longer afraid to tell her mother about her daily activities and games, without her mother scolding her for being too noisy. As for Wade, he tried to anticipate his mother's every wish. He would bring her a glass of water before she asked for it. He would carry her parasol when she didn't need it in the street. And above all, he would hug her tenderly. In gratitude, his mother would stroke his hair gently, sometimes slipping a kiss in. Yes, the divorce was finally good for their family. For her children's sake, and because Scarlett O'Hara had never given up in the face of adversity, she put all her newfound energy into her "redemption" with the Old Guard. Oh, how hard it has been! The Merriweather ladies and other paragons of virtue blocked her first gestures of peace. Scarlett pretended not to notice. Remembering her past experience in Bonnie's time, she was aware that her money would not be enough to secure their good graces. She volunteered to buy and transport the raw materials needed to distribute meals to the needy affected by the financial collapse of 1873 which was beginning to distress the middle classes. She made a point of sharing the Old Guard Ladies’ long embroidery sessions to supply the charity stall at Christmas. Magically, some debts pending at Kennedy's shop disappeared from the shelves, 'through accounting errors'. At other times, prices of items coveted by the ladies were abruptly lowered, 'due to end of stock'. This was never openly mentioned.
Scarlett's good deeds combined with an apparent less stormy behavor slowly began to bear fruit. Until one day, a blue hand-decorated cardboard card invited Ella Lorena Kennedy to share the Merriweather grandson's birthday cake. The child was overjoyed. Her mother had tears in her eyes. Her biggest battle was won!
With a clearing of her throat, Emma allowed herself to interrupt her boss's reverie once again. "Peter arranged the rolls of fabric on the scroll racks. He placed the most precious silk textures high up to protect them from soiling. He did well, didn't he? On the other hand, I arranged the lace rolls, ribbons, buttons and thread spools in the beautiful haberdashery cabinet, as you asked me to. I love its little drawers with glass knobs!" Scarlett smiled at the enthusiasm of her young saleswoman. "Let's hope that she will show the same smiling look to the most reluctant customers!" said the new owner of "The Boutique Robillard". She had been dreaming about this shop for three months. When her body regained its beauty, when her reputation was restored, she finally took the time to think about her future. How could she continue to live without passion? Her bank account was now well filled. Thanks to the terms of the divorce settlement. As soon as the funds were transferred from Charleston, she opened two savings accounts for Wade and Ella. This would come in handy when they decided to embark on life's adventure. „"Uncle Rhett," who always boasted that he considered my children his own, will ultimately leave only a trace in Ella and Wade's lives, dollars to make them forget his abandonment." With her children's financial security assured, she could now move on from the Kennedy shop. It no longer gave her any excitement. Hugh Easling bought it. After many years, and thanks to the constant supervision of his boss Mrs Butler, he had finally learned to manage it properly. To please the Old Guard, she gave him her "first child" with easy payment terms. The land belonging to her first husband Charles Hamilton, including the houses she had built, was also sold at a comfortable price for Scarlett. She also sold the second sawmill. Her first sawmill, Ashley now owned it. It had hurt so much that she had given it up on Rhett's advice. It was her baby, the one that had allowed her to support her family. How long would it take Ashley to destroy what she had worked so hard to build? Poor Ashley, she would always have to be a protective and discreet support. She had promised Melly that. As for Beau, a third savings account was already reserved for him. Scarlett was amused that Rhett would finally contribute to the cost of raising his former rival's son. This money would be managed by Ashley, providing Melly's child with all the comforts a member of Southern society had a right to expect - a pony, Melly had made him promise on his deathbed - payment for his education, his future Grand Tour in Europe. Melly, from Heaven where she was watching her together with her dear Bonnie, could be satisfied. "Of course, theoretically I would not need to work anymore. But will I become a matron devoted to her good works? What a horror! I have to find a new passion that makes me want to fight every morning. » ********************** Fate was waiting for her in Savannah. Savannah, February 1876 In February 1876, she made an emergency visit to her mother's hometown upon learning of the sudden death of her grandfather Robillard. The same man who had broken young Ellen's heart by preventing her from marrying her cousin and only love Philip. Scarlett had no reason to mourn the death of the cantankerous old man who had refused to help her financially during the war, when they were struggling not to starve in Tara. She had visited him several times, accompanied by two of her children - not Bonnie, Rhett wouldn't have wanted her to deprive her of his father, even if only for a week. The meetings between the French aristocrat and the Franco-Irish descendant were... interesting. Two beasts gauging their strengths: Pierre Robillard, full of himself, a master of pithy phrases, scornful of those around him, and amusing himself by persecuting the two daughters he had left, Aunts Eulalie and Pauline. Opposite him was his granddaughter, Scarlett, the eldest daughter of his beloved child, Ellen. Ellen who had betrayed him by marrying an Irish peasant. Indomitable and fierce Scarlett, whose beauty and temperament reminded him with a twinge of his only love, his wife Solange Robillard. After several explosive confrontations, Scarlett had become convinced that her grandfather hated her. In a final "thumbing of the nose", he ended up leaving her his entire fortune - an opulent one - simply by giving his two daughters a comfortable monthly pension that would protect them until their death. This was fair, because until now it had been Scarlett who had supported her ungrateful aunts, even during the war, while she had struggled to keep everyone in Tara alive. Family had always been sacred to this Irish descendant. Pierre Robillard rewarded her for this. This unexpected generosity allowed her to reject Rhett's money out of hand. Her departing husband had carelessly boasted that he would 'generously' give her a pension for five years to thank her for getting rid of her. As soon as the Robillard estate was settled, Scarlett informed Rhett Butler's solicitor of her decision to refuse the pension. The money that had already been paid since the day of the divorce was returned to him in full. "Free, I am free, Rhett, and I don't need you!" The last link between the two former friends - spouses - lovers - was definitely cut.         On the last day of her stay in Savannah, she treated herself to a visit to the city's fine shops. The coquettish Scarlett suddenly stopped in front of an ocher painted antebellum shop, with the sign  "La Mode Duncan". In the display windows, wooden mannequins wore the prettiest dresses the elegant Atlanta woman had ever seen. She pushed open the sandblasted glass door, engraved with the sign "Duncan Vayton". The manager of the establishment greeted the beautiful young lady with respect, quickly understanding that she was not going to be satisfied with buying a single item. He explained that the owner was a young fashion designer based in Paris, Rue de la Paix. Back in his native South, he had decided to give the Ladies of Savannah the benefit of his best creations. "I am a business owner myself, back home in Atlanta. I have a hunch that the rich people of Atlanta would quickly fall in love with such quality clothing. Would it be possible for me to meet with your landlord to discuss my project? » "With great pleasure, Ms. O'Hara. Mr. Duncan Vayton will be delighted to meet you. » That day Scarlett knew that, eventually, she had found her new 'baby' - a fashion shop. It also marked the beginning of a the relationship between two enthusiasts, Scarlett O'Hara and Duncan Vayton.
"Yes, it has taken courage to get through the past 31 months. There have been many shocks, disappointments, pain and tears too. « I, Scarlett, had to show humility - Rhett would have laughed about it, in another time - courage and resilience. But it was worth it. Almost three years later, I have survived. Rhett, you didn't get me down! Scarlett O'Hara is up and ready to fight! »
