This was a project that started in...2019, I believe? I remember making the wig, then starting to work on the repaint...only to realize that the face reaembled Anastasia's Grandma instead of Queen Uberta soooo, that was that 😆 I started dreading handsculpting the head for the next years, always putting other projects ahead of this, but in the meantime technology advanced so, years later, a 3d Printed head was the answer!

Anyway, here's the new entry to my always expanding collection of Swan Princess dolls! With Queen Uberta done, I think the next one will probably be Rogers 🤔 Or other versions of Odette and Derek? There's also Zelda, Clavious, Chamberlain...and King William, and- There's so many people!!!

Thirty years ago today (March 30, 1994), the classic animated film Thumbelina was released. Though she's not a Disney princess, she was voiced by one - Jodi Benson, aka Ariel of The Little Mermaid. Coincidentally, both of these fairy tales were written by Hans Christian Anderson. To commemorate this milestone, I'm sharing my old photos of the custom Thumbelina doll I made about five years ago. This girl is a hybrid, being a Shopkins doll with a Monster High body I ordered from AliExpress. So there were two remarkable things that happened while I customized her. Upon closing inspection on her body, I found out that she actually had two left hands, which is a first one since all the Monster High bodies I have ordered from AliExpress had a left and right hand 😅 So that one required a little bit of hand surgery. And the second remarkable thing was her default hair actually changes colors when it's warmed up, I did not know this so imagine my surprise when I saw her hair going from purple to blue while boil washing it 🤣 Also a nice little fact: shoes from Mattel Disney Princesses fit perfectly on Monster High feet!

I decided to give her 90s style anime eyes on the last minute, and I gotta say, I love how she turned out, she is so freaking cute 😊

My Dad Wrote a Porno (podcast): You read that right: His dad wrote a porno (well, literotica), the "he" here being Jamie Morton. More unfortunately, it's really bad literotica. Come join Jamie as he drags his friends Alice and James along on the whirlwinding sexcapades of Belinda Blumenthal as she takes the cut-throat world of pots and pans sales by storm -- and by suck!

What Went Wrong (podcast): Honestly, it's a miracle any movie gets made. Seriously, you'd be surprised just how much can go wrong. From slashed budgets to nightmare actors to actors developing UTIs before filming, Chris and Lizzie are here to clue you in on just how insane the productions behind your favorite movies can get.

Cult Podcast (podcast): Disclaimer: This is hosted by two comedians, so their humor may not be for everyone. That, and sometimes the subjects they cover are downers. Shocking but you'd be surprised by just how many actually aren't as depressing as you'd think. At any rate! Hosts Paige and Armando are here to give you the bizarre and sometimes downright mortifying histories of cults -- both the religious/spiritual kind, and of personality.

TruGreen7's "4 Artists Fakemon" Series (Youtube): Exactly as it says on the tin! Fakemon artist TruGreen7 invites 4 different artists to come collab on his channel. Every video has a unique prompt each collaborator is expected to regard when designing their Fakemon and as a result of the different styles and interpretations coming together, you wind up with some awesome and totally sick designs! (Check out his other vids, too, also.)

Classics Explained (Youtube): Oh no, my very blatant love of learning is showing!! Classical songs, movements, etc are broken down against a backdrop of comedic animation. We learn about the composer, the history behind the work being focused on, and the symbolism used in the instrumentation and what story they are trying to convey. It's a neat way to simplify something so complex, and can make classical music less intimidating. Think No Fear Shakespeare, but for music.

Kennie JD (Youtube): Beautiful, intelligent, and funny as hell. Join Kendall as her home skillet biscuit for just about any video of hers, but especially for Bad Movies and a Beat, the series where she reviews bad movies while putting her makeup on. However, she also reviews shows like The Ultimatum and Love is Blind, so if you want the rundown on those shows but never really wanted to actually watch them, there ya go.

Dollightful (Youtube): Need to look at something bright, colorful, and cute? Check out Dollightful! She makes cute custom dolls whose themes range anywhere from drinks to Halloween to Christmas to just plain cute!

Razzle (Youtube): Three (sometimes four or five) guys get sauced while watching and reacting to movies like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, live-action TMNT, and the bad Pinocchio movie (no, not the Disney one). I laugh way too hard at these guys, I can't watch them in public anymore because people might think I'm insane.

Mugiwara no Goofy (Youtube): So...I am technically trying to get through One Piece. But. I have cheated a bit on spoilers. And it's frankly thanks to this guy. He does other stuff but what he's best known for is taking an arc or a turning-point episode of One Piece and breaking down how actually fucking insane this shit is by putting it through the point of view of somebody who isn't a Strawhat or Strawhat-affiliated. Usually either the person who Luffy is about to beat the living shit out of, or some bystander who has a name but not the understanding of what kind of show they're in.

Squirrel Tactics (Youtube): Love King of the Hill? Well so does this Texan squirrel! So much so, in fact, that he learned how to speak, master technology and reading, and now makes Youtube videos breaking down characters and episodes from that beloved classic.

SuperRaeDizzle (Youtube): This Youtuber takes one for the team and purchases all sorts of art products -- many of which I've never heard of or could never dream of affording -- and reviews them! Sometimes we're talking something as simple as a discontinued Crayola, other times we're talking about a paint they can no longer make because it's toxic. And then, at the end of the video, she makes a piece of art using all the products reviewed!

Something Wicked (Youtube): Another thing I love to watch is model-building channels. And no, I don't necessarily mean, like, Gundam (though those are also cool). I mean, people making clay figures and models using only their skills and handy products. Something Wicked only just started a year ago and Barry only has about five videos so far but if you check them out, you'll see why: Each figure is made with such incredible detail, it's astounding. Plus, every creature is based off of an illustration provided by an old manuscript or text! So this means we currently have an alchemical creature; a kappa (with three buttholes!); and a devil with an ass on his face!

Studson Studio (Youtube): A more model-building channel, only Studson uses trash and trinkets to create replicas of La Casita, Howl's castle (all forms), and much, much more. Like a train with Shrek's face on it. Come for the building, stay for his deadpan delivery. Maybe if tyou stick around long enough, you'll catch a glimpse of the legendary Centipede Horse . . .

North of the Border (Youtube): Another figure-builder, Adam likes to make tiny, nerdy things. Unfortunately, these tiny, nerdy things also happen to be quite cursed. Not all of the time but enough of the time. It's a hoot.

Doll and Teddy Show February 25th 2024 Part 1

So in late February, I got to go with my aunt to visit The Doll and Teddy Show in Strongsville Ohio. Imagine almost like a flea market/craft fair, but specifically for dolls and stuffed animals. I took Colleen with me to the show, and I sewn her a special outfit. It has a Disney Princess print, and inspired by sweet lolita fashion.

The show itself was amazing. As you will see from the pictures, they had all sorts of dolls, new, old, original, custom, you name it. The people selling them were so nice and fun to talk to. Got lots of compliments from others for Colleen's outfit. I took lots of pictures, but at one point, I got tired and was just looking around without pictures haha.

Fae Farm. I recently started playing this, I LOVE it. Similar to Stardew but with a fairy twist. You can even get wings!

Disney Dreamlight Valley

AMAZING, Disney characters, the best clothes and furniture system ever with great customization. I adore this game

Another option, entirely free, is picrew and azealia dolls for just the dress up and character create aspect. Picrew has anime style, Azealia has more Disney style

I'm excited about the Mattel theme park. I think Mattel should have a hige area for barbie and go beyond references to the 2023 movie and doll history. Gen z is very found of 2000s barbie movies, i think remaster the movies for a new generation and create a land with some of the most iconic scenaries and the movies and have meet and greet with the different barbies, some attractions, ballet presentations inspired by the movies and they can sell official merchandising of the movies again( Elinas and guardian fairies necklacez, fairy wings, crowns, mermaid tails, custom ballet shoes like in 12 princesses, wands, outfits and of course dolls). Pastel colors, glitter and magic the aesthetic is so beautiful it could be a rival to the most classic Disney princesses aesthetic which i think is Disney main advantage in theme park IP. They could have 2 Barbie boutiques with transformations like bibidi bobidi boo, 1 modern barbie and the other fantasy Barbie like this movie

I think these 5 movies have iconic and beautiful scenery that could justify

This movie has such beautiful scenary and i think we could have a swings type of attraction when we take it all in from above like this scene on the movie

We could watch the couple dancing live

Swan lake

We could explore the magic florest with animals and later watch the characters dancing

Fairytopia

We could have sometype of experience when we gain wings

We could have mermaidia from the second movie too in this land

12 dancing princesses

We could have a boat ride to the magic place from their castle and end up with the dance that takes us back home

Magic of pegasus

We could have a ride when we fly between the clouds

and some type of pegasus carrousel

Bonus: princess and the pauper is very iconic and my favorite barbie movie but i dont think they should make a whole land for it because the scenery is not as interessing as from these other movie. But i think there should be a princess and the pauper show( with some iconic scenes from the movie) and meet and greet with Annelise, Erika and Preminger( such a iconic villain).

Universal also feel free to buy the rights to the old barbie movies park rights and do this too. Maybe put it on the studios park?

I think they were waiting for a roman legion to pass by so they could beat them up, no such luck, but they stood around to take pictures.

So a wolverine and 3 spiders walks into a bar, they do a few poses for pictures and then go back to enjoying themselves.

For some reason we could pet some interesting pets there, I got a chameleon on my arm, pretty chill, I passed the spider though, I would have screamed my lungs out. There was also a turtle and 2 snakes, one small, another one was, well.

Garfield was also there, he would be extra grumpy this morning with all the walking he did yesterday.

Third row from the left, the fourth one, the 2 fishes in a black background was the one I took back home, given how much they were 1 was the only reasonnable thing to do, and I was tempted to have a tattoo there, because yes there were at least 2 places there where you could get tattoos, I was pretty wishing for the Chandelure one with other ghost types pokemon but I was like if "If I get one I'll lose valuable time to see the rest of the event" and given it was my first event I needed to see it all... well, what was interesting to ME at least.

The heroine of my first legit anime that I remember watching on tv, I loved her outfits so much. I still look back on it fondly, hope to see many of her stuff at the Otakuton next month. ^^

I feel I should have spent just an entire hour taking pics of everything and everyone but I wanted to check the boots and the loots, 10 am from 17 pm ain't enough to see everything. XD

i bought another bundle, went against rules as it was over what was in the hobby money but I've decided to toss the rules out the window:

nope, over. These rules used to help for motivation and trying new skill sets. They just don't work for the current situation.

NGL it's actually quite hard to let myself change habits and i'm sure there will be regrets at some point but it's also about daring to extend kindness that comes naturally for others, to myself.

Ok onto dolls!

Your eyes probably went straight to Top Model Summer (Steffie mold on model muse with green streaks) or blob girl create a monster (amazing as always) or maybe even the WITCH dolls (atrocious nylon, lovely anime eyes) but this bundle was bought for a long term grail: Fairytopia Crystal.

My sister knows me well because she's the first one she grabbed out of the box with blob girl: "Glitter jelly shoes... but it's a doll! We would have been obsessed with this as kids"

There's also the spooptacular uncanny fab faces MyScene and some amazing clothes (gorgeous top and crochet/knitted? white and glitter dress and a velvet dark green jacket - no picture yet)

I'll take photos and clean them tomorrow if i'm well enough, having another flare-up after a series of rough nights and tiger mosquito bites.

I'll be keeping Crystal, some clothes, maybe some of the GG's belly button bodies or Simba Jenny's body for a weird clone I've grown fond of.

Ok finally here's a piece of information that's hard to find on the internet:

W.I.T.C.H dolls by Disney and Giochi Preziosi are 13" or 32cm and have little symbol lights on their torsos: they're not touch sensitive, not light activated, no movement or sound. I managed to find that you need to touch it with the Heart of Candracar/Kandrakar pendant. Ok that's tiny and glowy. Infrared? hmm. Magnets! I managed to get a video, you need a pretty strong magnet, touch it to the symbol then you get a 20 second rainbow light display.

Thesis Process Journal - 7.22.23 - Experimentation

So this past year I got very into custom doll making. I’ve gotten obsessed over Dollightful’s channel over on youtube, specifically her heavily modded doll stuff - I love seeing her engineer points of articulation and make these beautiful custom dolls out of it (My favorite is her Aquarian dragon doll). So… at the beginning of this summer I asked my aunt to take me thrifting to buy some cheap dolls to cut apart. I had the sneaking suspicion I could use the techniques to make a stop-motion friendly doll.

I found these Barbies (and one old disney Belle doll I think?) with very little existing articulation. I beheaded them, cleaned up the paint, took off the hair, and then tried to figure out where I wanted articulation. I wanted to try a more ball-jointed approach with a lot of rotational capacity - so I cut one of the dolls at the hips, under the breast, at the upper arm and elbow and at the knee. 

The legs have been proving difficult because they're jointed within the doll rather than in a more easy to access/ workshop way. They’re rubbery and hard to get epoxy putty to cling to because they’re flexible :( They’re also really lacking in hip mobility so I honestly might just end up breaking them off and making them wireframe because by god can I make a good wireframe puppet and they’ll most likely be covered by pants..

I tried making a cup for a ball joint in the midsection between the hips and breast, forming it out of epoxy. However making the ball waist has been impossible? I initially tried making one out of epoxy and now I’m gonna try a wooden bead wrapped in polyurethane foam and see if that flexibility helps anything. All these mods have honestly been doing so far though is fucking up the proportions in a fun and insane way… so I’m treating this as just a functional test so I know what I’m doing with my final, properly proportioned piece. 

I added a coat hanger wire to hook the elastic around to create the ball joint. We'll see how this goes.

I also started thinking about the head - I want moveable eyes and replacement faces to accommodate lip syncing (because I really really love to lip sync). To make the moveable eyes  took the wax on the outside of babybel cheese and spread it over a piece of thick glossy paper, cut a quarter circle out and wrapped it around my eye bead. It moves pretty smoothly but I think the wax will melt under the light (the red also kinda stains the eye bead but eyes do have red on them so I don’t find that to be bad).

I think I’d maybe try a harder thing in placement of the paper since it still kinda squishes around (though my test with an aluminum can material has pretty much failed bc I can't bend it into a cone shape well enough). Or I’ll just wrap it in epoxy and call it a day. I’ll then embed that into a skull backing and build the replacements up front like I did for Dressmaker.

Aesthetically I want to maintain a papery/fibery visual image. I’ve been considering the idea of animation on paper/cell for little cutaways/memory overlays to incorporate that 2D sensibility and maybe make everything a little more collagey? I ended up finding and looking through a bunch of old ass family photos and want to recapture that sort of hazy energy I got while looking at those. I’m not sure though - I kind of desperately wish I was around my peers so I could get some conceptual critiques before the school year started and maybe more ideas with regards to aesthetic and focus. Oh well, It’s a little under a month left before I’m back in Bmore.
